예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2022년 9월 15일

이번 안식일 토라 포션도 제가 좋아하는 성경 이야기 중 하나입니다. 지난 주 토라 토션은 “키 테쩨(네가 나가서 전쟁할 때)”였습니다. 이번 주 토라 포션은 “키 타보(네가 들어갈 때에)”, 신명기 26:1~29:8입니다.
이 말씀은 이스라엘 자손에게 가나안 땅에 들어갈 때 어떻게 해야 하는지 지침을 주고 있습니다. 너희가 주님께서 너희에게 주신 가나안 땅에 들어갈 때 첫 번째 지침은 그 땅과 과수의 첫 소산을 거두어 광주리에 담아 그것을 주님의 집으로 가져와 새 땅에서 거둔 그 첫 소산을 주님께 헌납하라는 것입니다. 이 일이 있을 시간적 배경은 오순절, 샤부옷입니다. 오순절은 유월절부터 정확히 50일 되는 날입니다. 유월절이 3월 말이나 4월 중순이면, 샤부옷/오순절은 50일 후입니다. 사실, 그래서 이 절기를 오순절이라고 부르는 것입니다. 오순이란 “50”이라는 뜻이니까요. 토라는 이 날들을 세라고 명했는데요, 유월절 양을 먹은 날부터 50일째 되는 날을 세는 것입니다. 이렇게 세는 것이 아주 중요하여 “곡식단 세기”(히브리어로, “쎄피랏 하-오메르”)라고 불렀습니다. 우리는 예슈아의 제자들이 오순절에 시온산에 모여 시온산 꼭대기에서 예슈아께서 약속하신 대로 하나님의 능력이 그들에게 부어지기를 기다린 것이 우연이 아님을 기억해야 합니다. 왜 꼭 집어 오순절이었을까요? 오순절이 출애굽한지 정확히 50일 되는 날, 시내산에서 토라를 주신 날이기 때문입니다. 그런데, 오순절과 관련하여 아주 중요한 또 다른 요소가 있는데요, 이방인들이 예루살렘에 와서 서로 다음과 같이 말할 것이라고 하나님께서 선지자들을 통해 주신 약속들이 있습니다: “많은 백성이 가며 이르기를 오라 우리가 여호와의 산에 오르며 야곱의 하나님의 전에 이르자 그가 그의 길을 우리에게 가르치실 것이라 우리가 그 길로 행하리라 하리니 이는 율법이 시온에서부터 나올 것이요 여호와의 말씀이 예루살렘에서부터 나올 것임이니라.” — 이사야 2:3 이사야를 통해 주신 이 예언은 두 가지를 예언하고 있습니다: 1. 예루살렘과 시온산에서부터 율법을 주신다.
2. 이방인들이 하나님을 경배하러 예루살렘과 시온산에 올라온다. 성경의 그 어느 본문에서도 예루살렘과 시온산에서부터 율법을 주시는 것이 다른, 완전히 새로운 토라(하나님의 명령)가 아니라, 시내산에서 주신 토라를 새롭게 하는 것이라고 가리키고 있지 않습니다. 사실, 주후 30년 경 오순절에 예루살렘에서 일어난 일은 모세가 십계명 돌판을 가지고 시내산에서 내려왔을 때 시내산자락에서 일어난 일과 매우 비슷하고 나란합니다. 사람들 위에는 불꽃이 있었습니다. 방언으로 하나님의 말씀의 계시가 있었고, 물리적으로 가시적인 모습도 있는 불의 혀 같이 갈라지는 방언이 있었습니다. 한 분 하나님께서 그 산에서부터 말씀하셨고, 그분의 음성은 여러 가지 언어로 나뉘었습니다. 성경 번역자들은, 심지어 일찍이 라틴어 번역자들도 시온산에서 일어난 일을 그보다 오래 전 시내산에서 일어난 일과 연관시키지 못했기 때문에, 그들은 이 사건의 시간적 배경을 이해하지 못했고, 시내산에서 토라를 줄 때 일어난 일들과 연관시키지 못했습니다. 그래서 그들의 번역에는 큰 공백이 있었던 것입니다. 이번 토라 포션에서 오순절(샤부옷)에 일어날 일의 가장 흥미롭고 눈여겨볼 만한 점은 이 본문이 성경에서 우리에게 경배드리는 자가 무엇을 어떻게 말하도록 알려주고 있는 유일한 본문이라는 것입니다. 경배자가 땅의 첫 소산을 광주리에 담아 가져와 성전에 헌납하며 제사장에게 그 예물을 내놓을 때, 이렇게 말하라고 알려주고 있습니다: “그 때의 제사장에게 나아가 그에게 이르기를 내가 오늘 당신의 하나님 여호와께 아뢰나이다 내가 여호와께서 우리에게 주시겠다고 우리 조상들에게 맹세하신 땅에 이르렀나이다 할 것이요 제사장은 네 손에서 그 광주리를 받아서 네 하나님 여호와의 제단 앞에 놓을 것이며 너는 또 네 하나님 여호와 앞에 아뢰기를 내 조상은 방랑하는 아람 사람으로서 애굽에 내려가 거기에서 소수로 거류하였더니 거기에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었는데 애굽 사람이 우리를 학대하며 우리를 괴롭히며 우리에게 중노동을 시키므로” — 신명기 26:3-6 이 말씀은 토라에서 제게 가장 눈길을 끄는 본문 중 하나입니다. 여기에는 과실과 채소와 곡식 중 최고로 좋은 산물을 광주리에 담아 가져와 이스라엘의 하나님께 드리는 (농사에) 성공한 것 같은 농부가 있습니다. 그는 이렇게 말합니다: “내 조상은 방랑하는 아람 사람으로서 애굽에 내려가 거기에서 소수로 거류하였더니 거기에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었는데 애굽 사람이 우리를 학대하며 우리를 괴롭히며 우리에게 중노동을 시키므로” 이 사람은 여름 추수 후 신선한 과실과 채소와 땅의 첫 소산이 가득 담긴 광주리를 가지고 하나님께 예배하러 예루살렘이나 실로로 온 이스라엘사람 예배자입니다. 그가 말하는 것은 “내 조상은 아람 사람으로서, 애굽에 내려가 거기서 소수로 거류하더니 거기에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었다…”는 것입니다. 제가 이 말을 분석해보면 여기에는 전형적인 “이민자” 패러다임이 있습니다. “나는 아무 것도 없이 거의 망할 지경으로 와서 이 새 땅에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었다.” 그런데, 성전이나 회막에서 제사장에게 이 말을 하는 사람은 땅이 있는, 그것도 농사가 잘 되는 땅이 있고, 아주 좋은 첫 소산을 수확한 사람입니다. 여름 밀 수확은 끝났고, 그의 곳간도 가득 차서 겨울 동안 몇 달을 지낼 대비가 되어 있습니다. 그는 춤추며 기뻐하며 그의 성공적인 한 해와 빵빵한 은헁 계좌를 자랑할 수도 있었을 것입니다. 그런데, 아닙니다! 그는 그의 가족의 초라한 시작을 기억합니다! 그는 (몇 세대 전) 그의 조상 아브라함을 기억합니다. 그는 아브라함이 방랑자로서, 장막에 살았고, 그의 본토를 떠나 하나님께서 그에게 기업으로 약속하신 땅에 이르렀고, 조상들이 그 땅을 떠나 애굽에서 200년 이상 가혹한 종살이의 끔찍한 상황에 놓였어야 했고, 그곳에서 이스라엘이 큰 민족이 되었다는 것을 기억합니다. 이번 토라 포션에서 우리는 무엇을 배울 수 있습니까? 우리는 언제나 우리의 초라한 시작을 기억해야 합니다. 우리는 언제나 우리의 성공이 우리의 안정과 부(富)에 기반한 것이 아니라, 종살이의 신고와 고통에 기반한 것임을 기억해야 합니다. 그 다음 구절들 신명기 26:7-9은 우리에게 우리의 성공의 비결을 알려주며, 우리로 하여금 겸손하고 감사하도록 하며, 무엇보다 잘됨과 성실과 형통의 공(功)을 오직 주님께만 돌리고 있습니다: “우리가 우리 조상의 하나님 여호와께 부르짖었더니 여호와께서 우리 음성을 들으시고 우리의 고통과 신고와 압제를 보시고 여호와께서 강한 손과 편 팔과 큰 위엄과 이적과 기사로 우리를 애굽에서 인도하여 내시고 이곳으로 인도하사 이 땅 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 주셨나이다.” — 신명기 26:7-9 이 말씀은 이 안에 세 가지를 정립하고 있습니다. 우리가 혹여 잊을까 봐 하나님께서는 우리 민족 정신, 그 정수의 이야기를 반복하도록 하십니다. 저도 많이 유감스러운데요, 저희는 저희 역사 중에 한 번 이상 이것을 행했어야 했습니다. 결론적으로, 우리가 어디에서 왔고 우리 민족의 조상, 모든 믿는 자의 조상이 누구인지 잊지 말도록 합니다. 그는 하나님의 말씀을 따라 고대 중동의 대도시 우르와 하란을 떠나, 매우 번잡하고 힘든 곳인 가나안 땅으로 내려왔습니다. 그 당시 이 땅에 살고 있던 모든 사람이 타지인(헷 족소, 아모리 족속, 가나안 족속, 브리스 족속, 히위 족속, 여부스 족속)이었기 때문에 번잡하고 힘든 곳이었던 것입니다. 이것으로 충분하지 않았습니다. 아브라함과, 그 다음 그의 아들 이삭과, 그 다음 야곱과 그의 자녀 모두 이 땅에 정착하기 전에 디아스포라 타향살이를 겪고 이 고생의 학교를 반복하여 겪었어야 했습니다: 바벨론 유수, 그 다음 예루살렘 성전 파괴, 그리고 로마에 의해 예루살렘 파괴 후 디아스포라. 저희는 아직도 회복 중이며 돌아오고 있는 중입니다. 이것은 이스라엘 민족의 치료이며 이스라엘의 신랑이 그의 신부를 데리러 다시 오실 때를 준비하는 것입니다. 이스라엘 민족의 구성원, 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 육신의 자손들은 모세의 때와 이스라엘이 번성하고 성공한 민족으로 가나안 땅에 거주하던 때처럼, 우리의 안정과 성공은 오직 하나님과 그분의 약속에 있음을 기억해야 합니다. 겸손과 회개의 태도와, 우리가 이 땅에서 잘 살고 있는 것은 오직 하나님의 선하심에 있는 것이지 열방의 자선이나 지지에 있지 않음을 아는 인식이 있어야 합니다. 우리는 우리의 미래가 하나님과, 우리의 선생님으로 보내주신 분을 알고 그분과의 관계에 근거하며, 세상의 빛이 되는 우리의 숙명의 성취는 우리가 창조주와 그분의 명령에 겸손히 순복함에 근거함을 알아야 합니다! 우리는 우리의 회개의 과정에 아래 호세아 선지자의 말을 기억해야 합니다: “이스라엘아 네 하나님 여호와께로 돌아오라 네가 불의함으로 말미암아 엎드러졌느니라 너는 말씀을 가지고 여호와께로 돌아와서 아뢰기를 모든 불의를 제거하시고 선한 바를 받으소서 우리가 수송아지를 대신하여 입술의 열매를 주께 드리리이다 우리가 앗수르의 구원을 의지하지 아니하며 말을 타지 아니하며 다시는 우리의 손으로 만든 것을 향하여 너희는 우리의 신이라 하지 아니하오리니 이는 고아가 주로 말미암아 긍휼을 얻음이니이다 할지니라 내가 그들의 반역을 고치고 기쁘게 그들을 사랑하리니 나의 진노가 그에게서 떠났음이니라 내가 이스라엘에게 이슬과 같으리니 그가 백합화 같이 피겠고 레바논 백향목 같이 뿌리가 박힐 것이라 그의 가지는 퍼지며 그의 아름다움은 감람나무와 같고 그의 향기는 레바논 백향목 같으리니 그 그늘 아래에 거주하는 자가 돌아올지라 그들은 곡식 같이 풍성할 것이며 포도나무 같이 꽃이 필 것이며 그 향기는 레바논의 포도주 같이 되리라 에브라임의 말이 내가 다시 우상과 무슨 상관이 있으리요 할지라 내가 그를 돌아보아 대답하기를 나는 푸른 잣나무 같으니 네가 나로 말미암아 열매를 얻으리라 하리라 누가 지혜가 있어 이런 일을 깨달으며 누가 총명이 있어 이런 일을 알겠느냐 여호와의 도는 정직하니 의인은 그 길로 다니거니와 그러나 죄인은 그 길에 걸려 넘어지리라.” — 호세아 14:1-9

The Jerusalem Prayer List – September 15, 2022

The reading this Shabbat is another one of my favorite Biblical narratives. The previous Shabbat was Ki Teitzei, “when you go out to war”. This Shabbat the reading is from a Torah portion that is called Ki Tavo, “when you come in”. The reading is from Deuteronomy 26:1 – 29:8.
The scripture gives instructions to the children of Israel how to enter the land of Canaan. The first instruction when you enter the land of Canaan, the land that the Lord has given you, is to gather the first fruits of the land and the trees, and put them in a basket, and take them to the house of the Lord, and dedicate your first fruits gathered in your new land to the Lord. The setting of this event is on the day of Pentecost, Shavuot — the feast of weeks. The feast of weeks falls exactly 50 days after the Passover. If the Passover is in the end of March or the middle of April, Shavuot/Pentecost is 50 days later. In fact, that is why the feast is called Pentecost, because Pentecost means “50” in Greek. These days are commanded by the Torah to be accounted for from the day after eating the Passover to the 50th day. This counting is of such importance, and it is called “the counting of the sheaves” (in Hebrew, “sephirat ha-omer”). We must remember that it is no accident that the apostles of Yeshua gathered on Mount Zion on the feast of Pentecost and waited on top of Mount Zion for the power of God to be poured out on them, as Yeshua promised would happen. Why specifically on the day of Pentecost? Because the day of Pentecost is the day of the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, exactly 50 days after they left Egypt. But, there is another element of great importance related to Pentecost, and that is the promises given by the prophets of God that the Gentiles will come to Jerusalem, and that the Gentiles will say to each other: “Many people shall come and say, ‘Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” — Isaiah 2:3 [NKJV] This prophecy by Isaiah is a prediction of two things: 1. The giving of the Torah from Jerusalem and Mount Zion.
2. The gentiles will come up to Jerusalem and Mount Zion to worship the God of Israel. It is not indicated in any biblical text that the giving of the Torah from Jerusalem and Mount Zion will be a different and totally new Torah (God’s instructions), but a renewal of the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. In fact, what happened in Jerusalem on that Pentecost around the year 30 CE (AD — as Catholics indicated the counting of the years) is very similar and parallel to what happened at the foot of Mount Sinai when Moses came down with the tablets of the Ten Commandments. There were torches of fire over the people. There was a revelation of God’s words in different tongues, and the splitting of the tongues — the languages — had also a physically-visible aspect. The One God spoke from the mountain, and His voice split into many tongues. Because the English translations, and even earlier Latin translations, of the biblical text didn’t associate what happened on Mount Zion with what happened many years before on Mount Sinai, they couldn’t understand the setting of the event and they didn’t associate what is happening with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Therefore, they had a deep lacuna (gap) in their interpretation. One of the most interesting and intriguing things that happened during the feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) in our texts is that we have the only text in the Bible that tells us how and what was said by the worshipper, when he brought his basket with the first fruits of the land and the gifts to the Temple, and presented his offerings to the priests: “And you shall go to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the country which the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.’ Then the priest shall take the basket out of your hand and set it down before the altar of the Lord your God. And you shall answer and say before the Lord your God: ‘My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us.’” — Deuteronomy 26:3-6 [NKJV] This is one of the most intriguing texts for me in the Torah. Here is seemingly a successful farmer who is bringing his offering of the best of the best of his produce of fruits and vegetables and cereals, a basket full of good things dedicated to the God of Israel. And he says: “My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us.” This is an Israelite worshipper coming to Jerusalem, or to Shiloh, to worship God with a basket full of fresh fruit and vegetables, the first fruits of the land right after the summer harvest, and what he has to say is, “My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation…” If I analyze this statement there is in it the classical “immigrant” paradigm. “I came with nothing, almost perishing, and in this new land, I became great, mighty, and populous.” But, the person who is saying these things to the priest in the Temple or in the Tent of Meeting is a person who has land, prosperous land, and a harvest of wonderful first fruits. The summer wheat harvest is finished. His storehouses are full and his barns are ready for the winter months. He could dance and rejoice and show off his successful year and his full bank account. But, no! He remembers the humble beginning of his family! He remembers Abraham his father (several generations earlier). He remembers that Abraham was a wanderer, lived in tents, had to go out of the country that God promised him as an inheritance and outside of His own land, in Egypt under the horrible conditions of a harsh slavery that lasted more than 200 years, where Israel became a great nation. What can we learn from this Torah portion? We must always remember our humble beginnings. We must always remember that our success is not based on our stability and wealth, but our success is based on the hardship of bondage and affliction. The next verses in Deuteronomy 26:7-9 give us the secret of our success, and ought to keep us humble and full of gratitude, and above all give all the credit of what is good and faithful and prosperous to the Lord only: “Then we cried out to the Lord God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey…’” — Deuteronomy 26:7-9 This text has built in it three things that, if we ever forget them, the Lord makes sure that we repeat our ethos, and the story repeats itself. Much to my regret we have had to do this exercise more than one time in our history. In conclusion, let us not forget where we came from and who the father or our nation and the father of all the faithful is: a man who left the great cities of the ancient Middle East, Ur and Haran, to follow God, and came down to the land of Canaan that was a very messy and difficult place, because everyone who lived here in this land at that time was a foreigner (“the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite”). This was not enough, because Abraham, and after him Isaac his son, and after him Jacob and his children, all had to taste the exile the diaspora before they could settle in the land and repeat this school of hard knocks more than once: in the Babylonian exile, and then the fall of Jerusalem and the exile after the fall of Jerusalem by the Romans, an exile that we are still in the process of restoration and return from — a cure of this nation of Israel and preparation for the return of the bridegroom to take His bride. The members of the nation of Israel, the physical children of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, must remember, as in the days of Moses and Israel dwelling in the land of Canaan, a prosperous and successful nation, that our stability and success are only when we are dependent on God and His promises. An attitude of humility and repentance and awareness that our good life in this land is only dependent on God’s goodness and not on the charity and support of the nations. Our recognition that our future is based on our recognition and dependence on God, and our faithful relationship to Him whom He sent to be our teacher and the fulfillment of our destiny to be the light of the world is based on our humble submission to the Creator and His instruction! We must remember that the words of Hosea the prophet in the process of our repentance: “O Israel, return to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity; Take words with you, And return to the Lord. Say to Him, ‘Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously, For we will offer the sacrifices of our lips. Assyria shall not save us, We will not ride on horses, Nor will we say anymore to the work of our hands, “You are our gods.” For in You the fatherless finds mercy.’ I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him. I will be like the dew to Israel; He shall grow like the lily, And lengthen his roots like Lebanon. His branches shall spread; His beauty shall be like an olive tree, And his fragrance like Lebanon. Those who dwell under his shadow shall return; They shall be revived like grain, And grow like a vine. Their scent shall be like the wine of Lebanon. Ephraim shall say, ‘What have I to do anymore with idols?’ I have heard and observed him. I am like a green cypress tree; Your fruit is found in Me. Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; The righteous walk in them, But transgressors stumble in them.” — Hosea 14:1-9 [NKJV]

Pray for Yuri Nitchaiev, who is in the hospital, and for Haddass, who is after surgery.
Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Lea Korky, a dear sister who is 89 years old and served for many years as a nurse in the Sha’arei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
David Stern, a dear old brother, and friend. Suffering from advanced stages of Parkinson’s.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
My dear wife is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. She was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems. Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there and they are far from our congregation, we miss them, but we wish them a wonderful summer.
Pray for the Roeh Israel Congregation and the leadership of Netivyah. We need to build up our staff in order to meet the challenges of Netivyah and the Roeh Israel Congregation in Jerusalem.

Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:
“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, And there shall be holiness; The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau, For the Lord has spoken. The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead. And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South. Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” — Obadiah 1:17-21 [NKJV]

Pray for a dear young man from Curitiba, Brazil, who is seriously needing our prayers for sanity and mental health.

Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn into joy and friendship.
