오는 이번 주에 우리는 이 땅과 디아스포라 온 이스라엘과 함께 나팔절을 지킵니다. 하나님의 뜻이면 우리는 토라의 명령 대로 일곱째 달 첫 날, 나팔(쇼파르: 양각나팔)를 불 것입니다. 그리고 사람이 만든 전통으로 하루 이상이나 되는 새해 첫 날을 기념할 것입니다.
저희는 전통적 유대교에서 “유대 새해”로 부르는 일곱째 달 첫날 새해가 있고, 서양력 1월 1일 새해가 있고, 성경 달력의 첫째 달(니산월) 첫날 새해가 있습니다! 저희는 얼마나 복된지요! “첫째 달 열넷째 날은 여호와를 위하여 지킬 유월절이며” — 민수기 28:16 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 “니짜빔”, 신명기 29:9~30:20이고, 선지서에서 읽는 부분은 이사야 61:10~63:9입니다. 저희 회중에서 읽는 신약성경은 로마서 10:1-18입니다. 토라 포션 “니짜빔”도 제가 좋아하는 토라 포션 중 하나인데요, 두 가지 이유가 있습니다. 첫째는 이것이 토라를 읽는 주기가 끝나고 숙콧(초막절)이 오고, 그런 다음 창세기 1장부터 다시 토라 읽기가 시작된다는 신호가 되기 때문입니다. 저는 진짜 토라 읽기의 한 해가 끝나고 다시 새로운 토라 읽기 주기가 시작되는 것이 좋습니다. 제가 토라를 읽거나 들을 때마다 저는 새로운 통찰이 생기고, 어떤 문구나 단어나 구절이 제 생각 속으로 들어와 성경 본문을 찾아보고 살펴보게 만들기 때문입니다. 제가 이 토라 포션을 좋아하는 두 번째 이유는 신명기 29:29 때문입니다: “감추어진 일은 우리 하나님 여호와께 속하였거니와 나타난 일은 영원히 우리와 우리 자손에게 속하였나니 이는 우리에게 이 율법의 모든 말씀을 행하게 하심이니라.” — 신명기 29:29 이 구절은 요즘 제게 특히 의미가 깊은데요, 너무도 많은 사람들이 신비주의와 카발라에 빠져 영적 속임수에 빠지기 때문입니다. 이성적이지 않은 영역을 탐구하는 것인데요, 이것은 마치 마약을 먹고 거짓된 안정감으로 자아에 도취하여 자기가 뭔가 “비밀스러운” 것, 뭔가 특별하고 오로지 자기만 가진 것 같은 것을 행하고, 비법의 지식을 받은 것 같이 굴게 합니다. 이 구절의 진짜 의미와 경고는 훨씬 더 단순합니다. 이것은 하나님을 찾으며 그분을 성실히 따르며 섬기고자 하는 모든 사람에게 주는 경고입니다. 평범하고 단순한 예슈아의 제자들이며 하나님의 자녀인 우리는 가만히 놔둘 필요가 있습니다. 우리는 계시되고 실제적인 것에 집중해야 합니다. 우리를 감동시키고 우리에게 선한 행위, 행동을 하도록 동기 부여하는 평범한 일들, 길가에 있는 사람들, 이 땅의 같은 지면에서 행하며 우리가 가진 것과 같은 배고픔과 필요와 소원과 꿈이 있는 사람들에게 축복이 되도록 우리의 믿음을 행동으로 옮기는 실행에 집중해야 합니다. 그렇습니다, 하나님이 필요하고 친구가 필요하고 공동체가 필요하고 창조주이며 우리 모두의 아버지께서 우리의 기도를 들으시고 우리에게 관심을 가지고 계시며 우리를 사랑하신다는 확신, 우리와 같은 다른 사람들과의 관계 속에서 나타나는 사랑이 필요한 그런 사람들에게 집중해야 합니다! 우리가 알고 하나님께 맡겨드려야 하는 것들도 있습니다. 주후 1세기 말경 폐쇄적인 그룹 안에서 처음 시작되어 3세기까지 계속 세력을 얻은 영지주의(그노시스주의)라고 부르는 사조가 있었습니다. 헬라어 “그노시스” (“비밀스러운 지식”)라는 단어가 뿌리인 이 용어는 17세기에 만들어진 단어로, 당시 정통교파에서 고대 기독교 이단, 특히 근본적으로 이원론적이며 이 세상을 부정하는 사람들, 그리고 난해한 계시와 신비한 영성을 통해 구원을 추구한 사람들을 일컬을 때 두루 적용되었습니다. (영지주의에 대한 브리타니카 백과사전 정의에서 가져옴.) 주님께서는 모세와 이스라엘 자손들에게 하나님에게 속한 일들과 지식이 있고, 우리 인간 제자들은 하나님께서 우리 인류에게 주신 분명한 계시, 하나님의 말씀으로 계시된 것들을 다루어야 한다고 명하고 계신 것입니다. 사실, 계시된 것, 우리가 평가할 수 있는 단순한 것조차도 때때로 우리에게는 너무 과하다는 것이 제 생각입니다. 저 같은 보통 사람들에게는 기껏해야 억측이고 추측일 뿐인 카발라적이고 난해한 문제와 지식을 다룰 경우는 훨씬 적습니다. 제가 아는 유대인 제자든 비-유대인 제자든 신비주의를 탐구하고 자신에게 일종의 비밀스러운 특별한 영적 지식이 있다고 생각하는 대부분의 사람들은 결국 이익을 탐하여 거짓 선지자가 되었습니다. 이것이 바로 제가 하나님의 말씀인 토라가 우리에게 매우 중요하고 분명한 이 교훈을 주고 있다고 생각하는 이유입니다: “감추어진 일은 우리 하나님 여호와께 속하였거니와 나타난 일은 영원히 우리와 우리 자손에게 속하였나니 이는 우리에게 이 율법의 모든 말씀을 행하게 하심이니라.” — 신명기 29:29 개인적으로 저는, 명확한 일들, 실질적인 행동과 실행력을 요구하는 일들을 처리하는 데 충분히 고된 시간을 들이고 있습니다. 저는 수영장 바닥에 무엇이 있는지, 내 앞에 무엇이 있는지, 안전한 해안에 도달하기 위해 어떤 방향으로 수영해야 하는지 볼 수 없는 불투명한 물에서 수영하는 일은 더 더욱 하고 싶지 않습니다. 제게 이 말씀은 예슈아의 제자이자 하나님의 종으로서 제가 안식일에도 따서 나 자신과 다른 사람들을 먹이고, 하나님에 대한 갈망과 예슈아와의 교제와 이스라엘과 전 세계에 있는 예슈아의 제자 공동체와의 교제를 충족시키도록 도울 수 있는, 깨끗하고 안전하며 실용적이고 유용한 옥수수 밭에 머물도록 나를 지켜주는 나침반이자 경계입니다. 이 하나님의 말씀에 또 다르게 접근한 랍비가 있습니다: 네 안에 드러나고 계시된 것과 네 안에 감추어진 것은 그분에게 똑같이 알려져 있기 때문이다. 그분께서는 그분의 전지하심으로 네게서 보는 모든 것에 대해, 비록 그것이 사람에게는 숨겨져 있을지라도, 네게 갚아 주실 것이다. 사람의 재판관이 증인의 증거에 의하든지 자기의 감각에 의하든지 그 사람 앞에 확정된 사실대로 판단하는 것을 알지 못하느냐. 그에게 마음에 있는 것이 확립될 수 있다면, 그는 그의 판단에 그것도 고려할 것이다. 송축 받으실 창조주께서는 모든 것을 똑같이 잘 아시기 때문에 ‘은밀한 것은 우리 하나님 여호와께 속하였다’(신 29:28)고 말씀하신 대로 그분의 지식에 따라 심판하신다.” — 랍비 베카이 에벤 파쿠다, “마음의 의무” 우리는 신비하고 난해한 것을 탐구하고 싶은 유혹이 있지만, 주님께서는 세상의 선을 늘리고 추측을 감소시킬 수 있는 실용적이고 실행 가능한 것들에게로 우리를 인도하는, 명확하고 실제적인 명령을 우리에게 주셨고, 주님께서 우리에게 선을 행하시는 것처럼 실제 행동으로 이 땅에 선을 행하도록 우리를 인도하십니다! 저는 제가 해야 할 일, 어떻게 해야 하는지 제가 알고 있는 일, 저에게 하도록 명확하게 주어진 모든 일을 하고 싶습니다. 저에게 별로 적용되지 않는 완전히 낯선 일에 연루되지 않고 제 의무와 책임을 수행하는 것만으로도 이미 매우 큰 도전입니다. 제가 레위인이나 제사장이 아니면 레위인이나 제사장의 일을 할 필요가 없습니다. 이번 안식일 토라 포션에 매우 중요한 가르침이 하나 더 있습니다. 우리가 하나님께서 우리를 위해 하시도록 허용해야 하는 것, 그것은 신약의 “새 사람” 개념과 깊이 관련되어 있습니다. “네 하나님 여호와께서 네 마음과 네 자손의 마음에 할례를 베푸사 너로 마음을 다하며 뜻을 다하여 네 하나님 여호와를 사랑하게 하사 너로 생명을 얻게 하실 것이며” — 신명기 30:6 이 명령은 신명기에서 마음의 할례가 나오는 두 번째 본문입니다. 첫 번째 본문도 신명기 10:16에 있습니다: “그러므로 너희는 마음에 할례를 행하고 다시는 목을 곧게 하지 말라.” — 신명기 10:16 우리는 마음에 할례를 행하라고 명하는, 둘 다 신명기에 있는 이 두 경우의 차이점과 유사점을 알아차려야 합니다. 첫 번째 경우는 10장 16절에 있습니다. 우리는 마음에 할례를 받으라고 명령받았습니다. 두 번째는 신명기 끝 부분인 30장 6절입니다. 여기에서는 하나님께서 우리 마음에 할례를 베푸실 것이라고 되어 있습니다. 이 차이는 세상의 구주이신 우리 메시아 예슈아의 제자인 우리에게 매우 중요합니다. 이 주제가 신약성경의 세 곳에 있음을 주목하시기 바랍니다: 로마서 2:28,29; 골로새서 2:11. “무릇 표면적 유대인이 유대인이 아니요 표면적 육신의 할례가 할례가 아니니라 오직 이면적 유대인이 유대인이며 할례는 마음에 할지니 영에 있고 율법 조문에 있지 아니한 것이라 그 칭찬이 사람에게서가 아니요 다만 하나님에게서니라.” — 로마서 2:28,29 이 말씀에서 사도 바울은 유대인인 우리가 언뜻 보기에 이해하기 어려운 것을 말합니다. 바울은 유대인인 우리에게 매우 심오한 것을 말하고 있습니다. 할례를 받은 것만으로 충분하지 않다는 것입니다. 야곱의 형 에서는 할례를 받았으나 유업을 받지 못했는데요, 그 이유는 그가 그것을 버려 죽 한 그릇에 팔았기 때문입니다. 참된 유대인은 육체에 할례를 받았을 뿐 아니라 마음에도 할례를 받고 성령으로 헌신하여 하나님의 인정과 칭찬을 구하고 사람의 칭찬을 구하지 않는 유대인입니다. “또 그 안에서 너희가 손으로 하지 아니한 할례를 받았으니 곧 육의 몸을 벗는 것이요 그리스도의 할례니라 너희가 세례로 그리스도와 함께 장사되고 또 죽은 자들 가운데서 그를 일으키신 하나님의 역사를 믿음으로 말미암아 그 안에서 함께 일으키심을 받았느니라 또 범죄와 육체의 무할례로 죽었던 너희를 하나님이 그와 함께 살리시고 우리의 모든 죄를 사하시고” — 골로새서 2:11-13 신약성경에 있는 이 두 본문은 사도 바울이 기록한 것입니다. 골로새서 2장 11-13절 본문은 이방인들에게 말하고 있습니다. 바울의 모든 편지에서처럼, 그가 대명사 “너희”를 사용할 때, 그는 항상 예외 없이 예슈아의 비-유대인 제자들에게 말하고 있는 것입니다. 바울이 1인칭 대명사 “우리가(는), 우리를(에게), 우리의”를 사용할 때 바울은 예슈아의 유대인 제자들에게 그리고 이들에 대해 말하고 있는 것입니다. 골로새서 본문에서 그는 “너희”, 즉 예슈아의 비-유대인 제자들에게 말하고 있는 것이 분명합니다. 예슈아의 이 비-유대인 제자들이 손으로 행한 할례가 아닌 그리스도의 할례를 받은 후에도, 이후 구절들에서 보면, 지금 그리스도 안에 있는 그들은 그들의 범죄로 죽었었으며 여전히 육체의 무할례 상태에 있었으나, 그들의 허물(죄)이 사함을 받았기 때문에 그리스도와 함께 살림을 받았음이 분명합니다! 다시 말해서, 메시아(그리스도)의 이 비-유대인 제자들은 그들의 죄가 용서받았기 때문에 손으로 행한 할례가 아닌, 즉 영적으로(그들의 마음에) 할례를 받은 것입니다. 이 본문의 중요성은 우선 마음의 할례에 대한 개념과 명령이 하나님께서 이스라엘에 주신 토라에서 나온 것임을 나의 기독교 형제 자매들이 알고 깨닫는 것입니다! 그렇습니다, 마음의 할례 개념은 토라에서 나온 것입니다! 사도 바울은 그가 속한 세상에서 아주 범상치 않은 일을 합니다. 바울은 메시아의 역사로 이스라엘의 하나님께 자기 생명을 바친 이방인들에게 사람의 손으로 하지 아니한 마음의 할례를 적용하고 있고, 예슈아를 자기 메시아와 구주로 영접하는 비-유대인들을 이스라엘에 합류한 이스라엘의 일부로 연결하고 있습니다. 이들은 이스라엘 사람들의 집을 보면서, 애굽의 장자의 죽음이라는 마지막 재앙이자 열째 재앙으로 애굽에 멸망이 닥칠 것임을 이해하고 이스라엘 사람들이 하는 대로 똑같이 하여 출애굽 때 그들에게 합류하여 가나안 땅의 유업을 상속받은 허다한 잡족과 같은 이들입니다. 하나님께서 이방인의 마음에 행하시는 마음의 할례는 바리새인 랍비들이 제어하거나 못하도록 결정하거나 개입하거나 할 권리가 없는 것입니다. 랍비들이 할 수 있는 일이라고는 이전의 이교도들, 우상 숭배자들이었던 이 사람들이 그들의 길을 바꿔 성도 공동체에 합류하여 이 공동체의 일부가 되기 위해 필요한 일을 하고 있는지 지켜보는 것뿐입니다. 이것이 로마서 12장의 다음 말씀이 실제로 의미하는 것입니다. 사도 바울이 모든 형태의 2인칭 복수 대명사 “너희”를 사용할 때, 그는 예슈아의 비-유대인 제자들에게 말하고 있음을 기억하시기 바랍니다. 바울은 예슈아의 유대인 제자들에게는 항상 1인칭 대명사 “우리가(는)” 또는 “우리를(에게)” 또는 “우리의”를 사용합니다. “너희를 박해하는 자를 축복하라 축복하고 저주하지 말라 즐거워하는 자들과 함께 즐거워하고 우는 자들과 함께 울라 서로 마음을 같이하며 높은 데 마음을 두지 말고 도리어 낮은 데 처하며 스스로 지혜 있는 체 하지 말라 아무에게도 악을 악으로 갚지 말고 모든 사람 앞에서 선한 일을 도모하라 할 수 있거든 너희로서는 모든 사람과 더불어 화목하라.” — 로마서 12:14-18 물론, 박해받고 있는 예슈아의 유대인 제자들에게도 동일한 규칙이 적용될 것입니다. 그리고 그것은 디아스포라와 이스라엘 땅에 살면서 섬기는, 예슈아의 유대인 제자와 비-유대인 제자 모두에게 분명해졌습니다. 다음 말씀에서 바울은 자신과 그의 생활방식과 사역을 유대인과 비-유대인 제자 모두를 위한 패러다임과 모범으로 사용하고 있습니다. 젊은이들은 이것이 주님께 돌아온 모든 제자들에게 추천되는 바울의 아바타(화신)라고 말할 것입니다. 다음은 주후 1세기 전반의 위대한 랍비들도 그들의 제자들에게 명령한 공식입니다: “내가 모든 사람에게서 자유로우나 스스로 모든 사람에게 종이 된 것은 더 많은 사람을 얻고자 함이라 유대인들에게 내가 유대인과 같이 된 것은 유대인들을 얻고자 함이요 율법 아래에 있는 자들에게는 내가 율법 아래에 있지 아니하나 율법 아래에 있는 자 같이 된 것은 율법 아래에 있는 자들을 얻고자 함이요 율법 없는 자에게는 내가 하나님께는 율법 없는 자가 아니요 도리어 그리스도의 율법 아래에 있는 자이나 율법 없는 자와 같이 된 것은 율법 없는 자들을 얻고자 함이라 약한 자들에게 내가 약한 자와 같이 된 것은 약한 자들을 얻고자 함이요 내가 여러 사람에게 여러 모습이 된 것은 아무쪼록 몇 사람이라도 구원하고자 함이니 내가 복음을 위하여 모든 것을 행함은 복음에 참여하고자 함이라.” — 고린도전서 9:19-23 사도 바울이 여기서 제시하는 원칙은 힐렐 장로가 미쉬나에서 제시한 것과 동일한 원칙임을 주목하십시오: “그는 ‘너의 뜻인 것처럼 그분의 뜻을 행하라, 그분께서 너의 뜻을 그분의 뜻인 것처럼 행하시도록. 그분의 뜻 앞에서 너의 뜻을 제쳐 놓으라, 그분께서 너의 뜻을 위해 다른 사람들의 뜻을 제쳐 놓으시도록.’ 말하곤 했다. 힐렐은 ‘너 자신을 공동체에서 분리하지 말라, 죽는 날까지 너 자신을 신뢰하지 말라, 동료의 입장에 이를 때까지 동료를 판단하지 말라, 결국에는 이해될 것이라고 [믿고] 상대가 이해할 수 없는 말을 하지 말라.’고 말했다. ‘내가 여유가 있을 때 공부할 것이다’라고 말하지 말라. 어쩌면 너는 여유가 없을 수 있으니.” — 조상들의 도덕 2:4

저의 사랑하는 아내는 심한 당뇨병과 류마티스 관절염과 지금은 기억력 소실로 고생하고 있습니다. 마르시아는 치매 진단을 받았습니다. 소아기 발병 당뇨병이 기억력 문제를 일으켰을 수 있습니다. 마르시아는 혼자 남겨두면 안 돼서, 저는 일주일의 대부분의 날을 집에 있어야 합니다. 그리고 제가 집을 떠날 일이 있으면, 누군가 마르시아가 인슐린을 복용하는지 확인하기 위해 와서 함께 있어야 합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – September 22, 2022

This next week we will celebrate with all of Israel in the land and in the diaspora the Feast of Trumpets. We shall, God-willing, blow the trumpets (shofars) on the first day of the seventh month as the Torah commands, and honor the man-made tradition of having more than one date for the new year.
We have the feast of New Year, in traditional Judaism called “The Jewish New Year”, on the first day of the seventh month, we have the western New Year on the first of January, and we have, on the first day of the first month (Nisan), the biblical New Year! How lucky can we be! “In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, there shall be a passover sacrifice to the Lord.” — Numbers 28:16 The Torah portion this Shabbat is called Nitzavim, Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20, and from the prophets the reading is from Isaiah 61:10-63:9. From the New Testament the reading in our congregation is from Romans 10:1-18. The portion Nitzavim is one of my favorite Torah portions, for two reasons. First, it is a sign that we are ending the Torah reading cycle and the feast of Sukkot, then starting again the reading from Genesis chapter 1. I really like this new beginning of the Torah cycle year after year. Every time that I read the Torah or hear the reading I receive new insights, and some phrase or word or verse jumps up into my conscience and gives me a jolt to search and look into the biblical text. The second reason why I love this Torah portion is because of Deuteronomy 29:29: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” — Deuteronomy 29:29 This text is especially meaningful for me these days when so many people are sucked into mysticism and Kabbalah, and fall into the pit of spiritual deception — delving into areas that are not rational, which is like taking drugs, dealing with things that puff up the ego of the person with false security that he is doing something “secretive”, something special and exclusive, and receiving esoteric knowledge. The true meaning and warning of this text is much more simple, and it is a warning to all people who seek God and want to follow and serve Him faithfully. There are things that we, normal and simple human disciples of Yeshua and children of God, need to leave alone. We are to concentrate on the revealed and practical. The plain things that move us and motivate us to good deeds and actions, and the practical working-out of our faith into action, to bless people on the sidewalk level – people who walk on the same ground of this earth and have similar hungers and needs and desires and dreams like we do. Yes, those people who need God and need friends and need a community and need assurance that the Creator and Father of us all hears prayer and cares and love us, a love demonstrated in our relationship to others like us! There are also things that we must know and leave up to God. There was a movement called Gnosticism that essentially started first in closed circles toward the end of the first century CE (AD) and continued strong into the 3rd Century CE. The term, based on the Greek “gnōsis” (”secret knowledge”), was coined in the 17th century, when it was applied liberally to ancient Christian heretical sects, especially those described by their orthodox contemporaries as radically dualistic and world-denying, and those who sought salvation through esoteric revelation and mystical spirituality. (Taken from Encyclopedia-Britannica definition of Gnosticism.) The Lord is instructing Moses and the children of Israel that there are things and knowledge that belongs to God and we, the human disciples, ought to deal with those things that are clear revelation from God for us, for mankind, those things that are revealed in God’s word. In fact, it is my opinion that even the revealed things, the simple things that are assessable to us, are sometimes too much for us, much less dealing with Kabbalistic and esoteric issues and knowledge that, at best, is speculation and speculative for normal folk like me. Most of those people whom I know, both Jewish disciples and non-Jewish disciples, that delve into the mystical and think that they have some kind of secret special spiritual knowledge end up to become false prophets — and for profit. This is the reason that I feel so good that the word of God, the Torah, gives us this very important and clear instruction: “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” — Deuteronomy 29:29 Personally, I have a hard enough time dealing with those things that are clear and demand practical action and executive power to do. Much less do I want to swim in unclear waters, where I can’t see either what is in the bottom of the pool or what is in front of me, and in what direction I need to swim to get to the safe shore. This text for me is a compass and a border guarding me, as a disciple of Yeshua and a servant of God, to stay in the clear and safe, practical and useful, fields of corn where even on Shabbat I can pick and feed on it myself and help others feed and satisfy their hunger for God and fellowship with Yeshua and with the community of disciples of Yeshua in Israel and around the world. Another approach to these words of God: “For what is open and revealed in you and what is concealed in you, are equally known to Him. He will requite you for all that His omniscience observes in you, though it remain hidden from human beings. For do you not see that a human judge decides according to what has been established before him as fact, whether on the evidence of witnesses or by his own senses. If what was in the mind could be established for him, he would also take that into account in his decision. Since the blessed Creator knows everything equally well, it follows that He judges according to His knowledge, as it is said: ‘The secret things belong to the Lord, our G-d’ (Deut. 29:28).” — Rabbi Bechai Eben Pakuda, “Duties of the Heart” We have a temptation to enter and delve into things that are mystical or esoteric, but the Lord gives us such clear and practical instructions to guide us into the practical and practicable things that can increase the good in the world and diminish the speculations, and attempts to lead us into practical actions to do good on Earth as the Lord does good for us! I want to do what I have to do, and what I understand how to do, and whatever is clearly given to me to do. That is already a very big challenge just to do what is my duty and responsibility without involving total strange things that don’t really apply to me. If I am not a Levite or a priest, I don’t have to do the work of a Levite or a priest. There is one more very important teaching in our Torah portion this Shabbat. Something that we must allow God to do for us, something that is deeply connected with the concept of the “New Man” in the New Testament. “And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.” — Deuteronomy 30:6 [NKJV] This command is the second time that the circumcision of the heart appears in the book of Deuteronomy. The first time is also in the book of Deuteronomy in chapter 10:16: “Therefore circumcise the foreskin of your heart, and be stiff-necked no longer.” — Deuteronomy 10:16 We must notice the difference and similarity between the two instances in a command of circumcising our hearts. Both are in the book of Deuteronomy. The first case is in chapter 10:16, we are commanded to circumcise our own hearts. The second is towards the end of Deuteronomy, in chapter 30:6, and here God will circumcise our hearts. This difference is of great importance to us as disciples of Yeshua our Messiah, the savior of the world. Note that the theme is in three places in the New Testament: Romans 2:28,29; Colossians 2:11. “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.” — Romans 2:28,29 [NKJV] The apostle Paul in this texts says something that at first glance is hard for us as Jews to understand. Paul is saying something very profound to us as Jews. It is not enough to have been circumcised. Jacob’s brother Esau was circumcised, but he was not to receive the inheritance, because he disposed it and sold it for a bowl of soup. A real Jew is one that is not only circumcised in his flesh, but whose circumcision is also inward in his heart, dedicated in the Spirit, and looking for God’s approval and praise, and not the praise of men. “In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…” — Colossians 2:11-13 [NKJV] Both of these texts in the New Testament are written by the apostle Paul. The one in Colossians 2:11-13 is speaking to the gentiles. Like in all of Paul’s letters, when he uses the pronoun “you”, he always, without exception, is talking to the non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua. When Paul uses the first personal pronouns “we, us, our”, Paul is talking to and about the Jewish disciples of Yeshua. In the text of Colossians it is clear that he is speaking to the “you” — the non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua. It is clear that even after these non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua are circumcised without hands, by the circumcision of Christ, even then, in the next verses, they are now in Christ dead in their trespasses and still in the uncircumcision of their flesh, but made alive together with Him (Christ) who has made them alive together with Him by the fact that their trespasses (sins) are forgiven! In other words, these non-Jewish disciples of the Messiah (the Christ) have been circumcised without hands, i.e. spiritually (in their hearts), because their sins have been forgiven. The importance of these texts is first for my Christian brothers and sisters to see and realize that the concept and the command for the circumcision of the heart comes from the Torah that God gave to Israel! Yes, the circumcision of the heart is from the Torah! The apostle Paul does something that is quite unusual in his world. Paul applies the circumcision of the heart that is done without human hands to the gentiles who have given their lives to the God of Israel through the work of the Messiah, and by this Paul connects and enables the non-Jews that accept Yeshua as their Messiah and savior as a part of those who have joined Israel, like the mixed multitudes that looked at the homes of the Israelites, and understood that doom is coming to Egypt with the last and tenth plague of the death of the firstborn of Egypt, and they copied what the Israelites did, and joined them in the exodus from Egypt, and in the inheritance of the land of Canaan. The circumcision of the heart that is done by God on the hearts of the Gentiles is something that the rabbis of the Pharisees don’t have a say-so, or a hand, or a right to control or stop. All that the rabbis can do is watch and see if these former pagans, idol worshipers have changed their ways, have joined the community of the saints and are doing what it is necessary to do to be a part of the community. This is what the following text from the book of Romans 12 really indicates. Please remember that when The apostle Paul uses the send person plural pronoun “you” in all of its forms, he is speaking to the non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua. For the Jewish disciples of Yeshua Paul always uses the first personal pronoun, “we” or “us” or “our”… “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” — Romans 12:14-18 Of course the same rule would apply to the Jewish disciples of Yeshua who are being persecuted. And it is made clear for both Jewish and non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua, living and serving in the diaspora and in the land of Israel. In the following text, Paul is using himself and his lifestyle and ministry as a paradigm and example for both the Jewish and the non-Jewish disciples. The young people would say that this is Paul’s avatar, that is recommended for all of the disciples that he has brought to the Lord. It is a formula that also the great rabbis of the first half of the first century CE commanded to their disciples: “For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.” — 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 [NKJV] Note that the principle that the apostle Paul is presenting here is the same principle that Hillel the Elder presented in the Mishnah: “He used to say: do His will as though it were your will, so that He will do your will as though it were His. Set aside your will in the face of His will, so that he may set aside the will of others for the sake of your will. Hillel said: do not separate yourself from the community, Do not trust in yourself until the day of your death, Do not judge your fellow man until you have reached his place. Do not say something that cannot be understood [trusting] that in the end it will be understood. Say not: ‘when I shall have leisure I shall study;’ perhaps you will not have leisure.” — The Ethics of the Fathers 2:4

Lea Korky, a dear sister who is 89 years old and served for many years as a nurse in the Sha’arei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
David Stern, a dear old brother, and friend. Suffering from advanced stages of Parkinson’s.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please put Marcia Shulam and me, Joseph Shulam in your daily prayers. We trust in the Almighty God His mercy is sufficient for us, but prayer by honest and sincere brothers and sisters can surely wake up God’s mercy and at least stop the deterioration of Marcia’s memory.
My dear wife is suffering from severe diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis and now also from memory loss. She was diagnosed with dementia. Childhood-onset Diabetics are susceptible to memory problems. Marcia can’t be left alone, and I must stay home most of the days of the week, and if I leave the house someone has to come and stay with Marcia to make sure that she takes her insulin.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there and they are far from our congregation, we miss them, but we wish them a wonderful summer.

Pray for our dear brother Reuven from Netivyah who is living and working in London now and pray for his wife. Pray that they both are protected and blessed and that Reuven’s wife finds a good job in London.

Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:
“But on Mount Zion there shall be deliverance, And there shall be holiness; The house of Jacob shall possess their possessions. The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau, For the Lord has spoken. The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead. Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.
Pray for a dear young man from Curitiba, Brazil, who is seriously needing our prayers for sanity and mental health.
Pray for our dear brother Marcelo G. and his family. Marcelo is a pioneer in the establishing the Teaching from Zion ministry in Brazil and the Har Zion Congregation in Belo-Horizonte.
Please pray for Marcelo and Matheus on their trip to Portugal for ministry, for protection on the travel and success in the mission for Portugal.

Pray for Bernardo Antonio Nothen Becker. Bernardo is addicted to gambling and playing poker. This caused deep sorrow to his family.
Fernanda Nothen Becker, our dear sister has problems with her job that cause her pressure and challenges. Pray for the social situation in Fernanda’s work to turn and her suffering to turn into joy and friendship.

In India, Pastor Isaac, from Chennai, needs our prayers. Pastor Isaac is suffering from kidney problems and has to have dialysis several times per week.

Please pray for Ruby K. from Hong Kong. Ruby has gone through a very complicated surgery for multiple cancers in her body. The surgery was very long, and Ruby is back home now recovering. Please lift Ruby K. and ask the Lord to heal and deliver Ruby from Hong Kong.

Pray for Ruby Little, our dear and faithful sister who has cancer and has stopped receiving medical treatment for the cancer that she has. Please pray for Ruby that the Lord will heal and strengthen her and provide for all her needs both medically and socially.

We need more workers because of the challenges and needs and opportunities to bless the King Yeshua and His Kingdom down here on Earth and bless the poor people of Jerusalem and produce more materials, books, and magazines.
