이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 바이쉬랔(“그리고 그가 보냈다”), 창세기 32:3~36:43이고, 하프타라는 오바댜 1:1~1:21, 신약성경에서 읽도록 추천되는 부분은 마태복음 2:13-23입니다.
세계와 이스라엘은 지금 지긋지긋한 코로나바이러스 팬데믹의 3차 창궐을 겪고 있습니다. 폐쇄와 격리만이 이 세계적 팬데믹의 감염 곡선을 꺾을 수 있는 유일한 조치입니다. 제가 성경을 읽은 것에서 제가 아는 것은 성경의 모든 전염병은 하나님으로부터 왔고 어느 정도 진지한 회개 후에 하나님께서 그것을 거두셨다는 것입니다. 때때로 회개는 모세가 하나님의 명령에 따라 만들어 높은 장대에 둔 놋뱀을 사람들이 보는 것만으로도 낫게 되는 것과 같이 단순하기도 했습니다. 또 어떤 경우에는 전염병을 그치게 하는 데 필요한 회개에 엄중한 죄의 고백과 자신의 행동에 대한 책임을 지고 회개하는 일이 필요하기도 했습니다. 주를 거슬러 하나님의 명령에 태만했던 다윗의 죄 때문에 이스라엘에서 수천 명을 죽인 전염병을 그치도록 다윗이 기도한 것입니다: “다윗이 하나님께 아뢰되 내가 이 일을 행함으로 큰 죄를 범하였나이다 이제 간구하옵나니 종의 죄를 용서하여 주옵소서 내가 심히 미련하게 행하였나이다 하니라.” – 역대상 21:8 주님께서는 다윗에게나 이스라엘에게나 너그럽지 않으셨습니다. 네, 주님께서는 자비하시고 오래 참으시지만, 또한 공정과 공의의 하나님이시기도 합니다. 그래서 하나님께서는 갓 선지자를 보내셔서 다윗에게 전염병을 그치게 할 세 가지 선택안을 주시겠다 말씀하십니다: “여호와께서 다윗의 선견자 갓에게 말씀하여 이르시되 가서 다윗에게 말하여 이르기를 여호와의 말씀이 내가 네게 세 가지를 내어 놓으리니 그 중에서 하나를 네가 택하라 내가 그것을 네게 행하리라 하셨다 하라 하신지라 갓이 다윗에게 나아가 그에게 말하되 여호와의 말씀이 너는 마음대로 택하라 혹 삼년 기근이든지 혹 네가 석 달을 적군에게 패하여 적군의 칼에 쫓길 일이든지 혹 여호와의 칼 곧 전염병이 사흘 동안 이 땅에 유행하며 여호와의 천사가 이스라엘 온 지경을 멸할 일이든지라고 하셨나니 내가 무슨 말로 나를 보내신 이에게 대답할지를 결정하소서 하니 다윗이 갓에게 이르되 내가 곤경에 빠졌도다 여호와께서는 긍휼이 심히 크시니 내가 그의 손에 빠지고 사람의 손에 빠지지 아니하기를 원하나이다 하는지라 이에 여호와께서 이스라엘 백성에게 전염병을 내리시매 이스라엘 백성 중에서 죽은 자가 칠만 명이었더라.” – 역대상 21:9–14 전염병으로 이스라엘 중 7만 명이 죽고 나서야 전염병이 그쳤습니다. 이것은 저를 걱정스럽게도 하고 캐묻고 싶게도 만드는 말씀입니다. 주님께서는 이 코로나바이러스 전염병을 통해 우리에게 뭘 말씀하시어 가르치시고자 하시는 것일까요? 이 세계적 전염병으로 벌써 150만 명 이상이 죽고, 그보다 몇 갑절 이상 감염되어 심각한 어려움을 겪고 있고 이 바이러스에서 비롯되어 계속 되는 부작용으로 고통당하고 있는데, 하나님께서는 인류가 저지른 죄에 대해 이 세계가 어떤 대가를 치르게 하시려는 것일까요? 저는 기도를 많이 하며 주님께 이 전염병에 대한 통찰을 좀 구했습니다! 이 전염병의 이름은 코로나바이러스입니다. 모든 라틴 계열 언어에서 코로나는 왕관이라는 뜻입니다. 세계가, 특별히 자기 나라를 “기독교 국가”라고 부르는 나라들이 주님을 그분의 보좌에서 제거하고 그분의 자리에 자기들의 우상을 두었습니다! 소위 “기독교” 서구권은 “인간”에게 왕관을 씌우는 진보적 세속 인본주의라는 우상을 자기 하나님으로 모셨습니다. 학교에서 기도가 금지되고, 태 중에서 발생기에 있는 생명을 낙태로 앗아가 그것을 비닐봉지에 넣어 쓰레기통에 버리고, 하나님의 말씀에 구약에서도 신약에서도 분명히 “가증한 일”이라고 한 부도덕한 일을 성지(聖地)의 대도시와 서구권의 대도시의 거리에서 축하하며 퍼레이드를 합니다. 저는 무엇이 원인인지 확실히 모르지만, 제가 성경을 읽은 바에 의하면, 하나님의 손이 그분의 세상에서 역사하는 것을 봅니다. 저는 이 전염병 역시 성경에 나오는 모든 전염병의 경우처럼 하나님의 역사가 아닐까 생각합니다. 저는 이것이 자연의 독립적인 일이라고, 즉 일부 유전자가 느슨하고 종잡을 수 없는 어떤 단백질과 결합하여 결혼하고 사람의 호흡기관의 도움으로 번식한 우연이라고 믿을 이유가 없습니다. 아니오, 이상하게 조작되고 지능적인 이 바이러스는 사람들 사이에 너무도 빨리 퍼지고 있고, 너무 치명적이기에, 우리 모두에게 경종을 울려 우리로 하여금 우리 삶과 인류 전체에 큰 변화가 필요함을 알게 하기 위해 계획된 사람과 하나님의 협동, 공동의 일 같이 보입니다. 우리 각자가 기도하며 주님을 찾아 “하나님의 세상에 하나님의 자비가 속히 임하게 하기 위해 제가 뭘 해야 할까요?” 여쭈도록 합시다. 여러분은 스스로 “죠(요셉 슐람)의 이 예루살렘 기도 목록 서론은 이번 안식일 토라 포션과 어떻게 관계가 있는 거지?” 질문할 수 있을 것입니다. 창세기 32:3절부터의 토라 포션은 야곱과 그의 가족이 주님께서 그의 할아버지 아브라함에게 주신 땅으로 다가가는 이야기로 시작됩니다. 가나안땅을 떠난 지 21년 만인 지금 야곱에게는 가족, 적어도 아내 두 명과 십여 명의 아이들이 있습니다. 그는 부유한 사람으로, 그의 물리적 유산과 영적 유산의 권리를 주장하러 그 땅으로 돌아오고 있습니다. 디아스포라로 사는 동안 야곱의 가족은 우상숭배에서 아주 깨끗하지는 않았습니다. 지난 주 토라 포션에서 우리는 그의 가족이 라반의 집에서 그 집의 우상을 가지고 온 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러나 야곱의 가장 큰 도전은 그의 형과의 불가피한 만남이었습니다. 야곱은 그의 어머니 리브가가 왜 그를 북쪽 시리아, 그녀의 오라비 라반의 집으로 피해 달아나게 하고 싶어 했는지를 아주 잘 기억하고 있었음이 틀림없습니다. 그것은 에서가 그의 마음속으로 이삭이 죽은 후 야곱을 죽이기로 마음먹고 있었기 때문입니다. 이제 야곱은 다시 에서와 마주해야 해야 하는데, 이번에는 둘 다 재산이 많고 각자의 권력이 있는 성공한 사람들입니다. 두려움과 지혜가 같이 합해져, 에서와의 만남이 일어날 때 야곱과 그의 가족의 안전을 위한 전략이 세워졌습니다. 야곱이 에서와 만나기 전에 취한 첫 번째 조치는 (야곱과 그의 가족에 대한 에서의 감정을 살피러) 일단의 메신저들을 앞서 보내는 것입니다. 야곱은 이 수십 년이 지나고도 에서가 아직 화가 많이 나 있고 살인 의도가 있는지 알고 싶었습니다. 야곱이 에서에게 이렇게 첫 번째 메신저를 보낸 주된 이유는 정보를 수집하고 에서에게 그의 아우 야곱과 만나는 일에 흥미를 가질 만한 이유를 주려는 것입니다. 야곱의 메신저들이 에서에게 말한 것입니다: “그들에게 명령하여 이르되 너희는 내 주 에서에게 이같이 말하라 주의 종 야곱이 이같이 말하기를 내가 라반과 함께 거류하며 지금까지 머물러 있었사오며 내게 소와 나귀와 양 떼와 노비가 있으므로 사람을 보내어 내 주께 알리고 내 주께 은혜 받기를 원하나이다 하라 하였더니” – 창세기 32:4,5 달리 말해서, 야곱의 메신저들은 에서에게 다음과 같이 말하는 것입니다: “나는 내 형인 당신을 존중하며, 우리가 만나 화해를 하지 않는다면 당신이 많이 후회할 것이라는 것을 당신에게 알려주려는 것입니다. 나는 부자이므로, 당신이 나와 내 가족을 호의적으로 받아들이면 값을 두둑이 치를 것입니다.” 이것은 회유의 메시지이며 에서가 야곱을 평화롭게 맞이할만한 좋은 이유를 제시하는 것입니다. 형 에서와 화평하고 형통하고자 하는 야곱의 제안에 대한 에서의 반응은 덜 평화로웠습니다. “사자들이 야곱에게 돌아와 이르되 우리가 주인의 형 에서에게 이른즉 그가 사백 명을 거느리고 주인을 만나려고 오더이다.” – 창세기 32:6 에서의 반응은 “내가 너를 만나러 가지만, 나는 너를 믿지 못하겠다. 나, 400명 군사 데리고 너 보러 간다.”입니다. 야곱의 반응은 에서가 그에게 전한 말을 정확히 이해했음을 보여줍니다. 야곱은 자신과 그의 가족을 보호하기 위한 모든 예비조치를 취하는 것으로 반응했습니다. “야곱이 심히 두렵고 답답하여 자기와 함께 한 동행자와 양과 소와 낙타를 두 떼로 나누고 이르되 에서가 와서 한 떼를 치면 남은 한 떼는 피하리라 하고” – 창세기 32:7,8 자기 진영을 나눠 서로 거리를 두어 두 구역 사이에 위험을 분산시키는 야곱의 조치는 현명한 군사적 전략입니다. 사실, 본문 말씀은 그것을 분명하게 설명하고 있습니다. 에서가 진영 중 하나를 공격하더라도 다른 진영은 피해서 살아남을 수 있을 것입니다. 제게는 이 이야기가 고무적이기도 하고 우울해지게도 합니다. 여기에 같은 부모에게서 나온 두 형제, 사실, 쌍둥이가 있습니다. 그들은 서로에게 두려움을 일으키고 있는데요, 둘 사이에 나쁜 일이 있었기 때문입니다. 한 형제가 다른 형제를 이용한 것 같이 보이는 상황이 있었습니다. 야곱이 두려워하며 형 에서에게서 자신과 그의 가족과 재산을 지키기 위해 전략적 행동을 해야 했다는 사실은 저에게는 우울해지게 하는 일입니다. 에서가 아직도 야곱에 대해 가지고 있는 미움과, 오랜 세월 디아스포라로 살고도 야곱의 마음에 있는 두려움과 죄책감은 두 형제의 슬픈 실상입니다. 좋은 점은 피가 물보다 진하여 이 두 형제가 만났을 때는 적어도 잠깐 동안은 과거의 고통과 상처는 잊히고, 서로의 품에 달려들어 서로 안고 입을 맞춥니다. 그들의 역사에는 형제들끼리 과거의 상처 이상을 보고 그냥 현재에 집중할 수 있는 순간들이 있었습니다. 야곱은 하나님께 기도하면서 이 만남을 준비합니다: “야곱이 또 이르되 내 조부 아브라함의 하나님, 내 아버지 이삭의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 전에 내게 명하시기를 네 고향, 네 족속에게로 돌아가라 내가 네게 은혜를 베풀리라 하셨나이다 나는 주께서 주의 종에게 베푸신 모든 은총과 모든 진실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없사오나 내가 내 지팡이만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜더니 지금은 두 떼나 이루었나이다 내가 주께 간구하오니 내 형의 손에서, 에서의 손에서 나를 건져내시옵소서 내가 그를 두려워함은 그가 와서 나와 내 처자들을 칠까 겁이 나기 때문이니이다 주께서 말씀하시기를 내가 반드시 네게 은혜를 베풀어 네 씨로 바다의 셀 수 없는 모래와 같이 많게 하리라 하셨나이다.” – 창세기 32:9-12 야곱의 기도를 보고 거기에서 우리 자신과 주님에 관하여 몇 가지 중요한 점을 배우도록 합시다: 1. 하나님의 정체는 분명하며, 야곱의 가족사에는 아브라함과 이삭의 전능하신 하나님과의 관계로 언급됩니다. 2. 제가(야곱이) 그 땅으로 돌아가는 것은 내가 내 가족과 내 나라로 돌아가야 한다는 주님의 지시와 예언적 요구의 결과입니다. 3. 오 주님, 저는 교만과 의견을 가지고 주님께 오는 것이 아닙니다. 저는 주님께서 제게 보여주신 모든 자비와 모든 진리의 최소한도 받을 만하지 않습니다. 4. 제가 기도하오니, 제 형의 손에서 저를 구해주옵소서. 오 주님, 주님께서는 제 아버지와 제 조부 아브라함에게 제 자손들이 바다의 모래와 같이 셀 수 없이 될 것이라는 약속을 주셨습니다. 야곱의 기도는 겸손과 주님께 굴복하는 것의 본이며, 여기에는 이렇게 말하는 강력한 주장도 있습니다: ‘주님, 주님께서는 제 선조와 제게 우리가 큰 민족이 될 것이라는 약속을 해주셨습니다.’ 에서가 제 목숨을 앗아가고 제 가족을 멸하면 주님의 약속은 어떻게 이루어지겠습니까!? 야곱이 에서와 만나기 전에 하나님께서는 그분의 천사를 보내 얍복강 가에서 야곱과 겨루게 하십니다. 이것은 창세기 중에서 가장 흥미로운 말씀 중 하나인데요, 의도적으로 구체적인 부분이 분명하지가 않아 신비한 효과를 자아냅니다. 얍복강에서 이렇게 만난 이유는 천재적인 하나님의 은혜의 만지심 때문입니다. 야곱은 이스라엘이 되어야했습니다. 그는 자기의 지혜와 약삭빠름과 능력을 의지하는 것을 그치고, 그의 인생의, 제가 덧붙인다면, 우리 모두의 인생의 궁극적인 성과는 바로 주님의 손에 있음을 알아야 했습니다. 예슈아의 제자들인 우리 인생에 가장 큰 도전은 우리 자신과 우리 능력과 우리 마음을 의지하는 것을 그치고 우리 손을 홍해를 가르고 그분의 자녀들로 하여금 마른 땅을 건너게 하신 분의 손에 두는 것입니다. 우리의 도전은 우리가 폭풍을 뚫고 어둡고 차갑고 영원한 밤을 건너갈 때 예슈아의 손을 놓지 않고 계속 하나님의 은총을 받기 위해 하나님을 바라보고 그분의 손을 놓지 않는 것입니다! 얍복강에서의 사건은 야곱과 이스라엘 민족 전체의 모습을 만들고 계속해서 오늘까지도 우리 유대인과 우리 메시아의 제자들의 모습을 만드는 기념비적 사건입니다. 야곱과 에서가 마침내 서로 만났을 때 이런 일이 일어났습니다: “에서가 달려와서 그를 맞이하여 안고 목을 어긋맞추어 그와 입맞추고 서로 우니라.” – 창세기 33:4 적어도 그 순간만큼은 야곱의 모든 두려움은 사라졌고, 그들 사이에 있던 적의와 쓴 뿌리는 연기가 되어 사라졌습니다. 그리고 적어도 그 순간 동안에 남아 있는 것은 “우리는 형제다, 우리는 한 피를 나눴다, 우리는 우리가 필요한 모든 것을 가지고 있다, 우리는 서로가 필요하다!”였습니다. 야곱은 그 만남의 나머지 부분에서도 계속 겸손했고 형 에서를 예우했습니다. 그러나 이런 형제들의 태도는 오래 계속되지는 않았습니다. 모압과 에돔은 이스라엘에 대한 적의를 그치지 않았고, 장차에도 많은 전쟁과 적의가 이스라엘과 그 이웃 사이에 남아 있을 것이었습니다. 이 두 형제에게서 우리가 배워야 할 것은 믿음과 인격에 있어 정말로 강한 자는 자기 형제에게 예의와 존중을 보여주어야 한다는 것입니다. 야곱은 얍복강에서 하나님과 사람 앞에 다시 일어났습니다. 인생에서 메시아의 제자들이며 하나님의 자녀인 우리는 우리의 인생의 강을 건널 때 우리 자신의 천사와 씨름해야 합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – December 3, 2020

The reading on Shabbat is Vayishlach (“and He sent”), from Genesis 32:3 – 36:43, and the Haftarah reading is from Obadiah 1:1 – 1:21. The New Testament recommended reading is from Matthew 2:13-23.
The world and Israel are now experiencing the third wave of the cursed coronavirus pandemic. Closures and Quarantines are the only measures that can curb the infection curve of this worldwide pandemic. From my reading of the Bible, I know that all the plagues in the Bible came from God and were lifted by God after some serious repentance. The repentance at times was simple, like looking at a brass serpent that Moses, by God’s command, had formed and placed on a tall pole so that people could look at it and be healed. At other times the repentance to stop a plague required some solemn confessions of sins and a willingness to take responsibility for one’s actions and to repent. Here are the words that King David prayed to stop the plague that was killing thousands in Israel because of his sin against the Lord and his neglect of God’s commandments: “So David said to God, ‘I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing; but now, I pray, take away the iniquity of Your servant, for I have done very foolishly.’” – 1 Chronicles 21:8 [NKJV] The Lord was not easy on David, or on Israel. Yes, the Lord is merciful and long-suffering, but He is also a God of justice and righteousness. So, God sent the prophet Gad, to speak to David and to give David three choices to stop the plague: “Then the Lord spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying, ‘Go and tell David, saying, “Thus says the Lord: ‘I offer you three things; choose one of them for yourself, that I may do it to you.’ So Gad came to David and said to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Choose for yourself, either three years of famine, or three months to be defeated by your foes with the sword of your enemies overtaking you, or else for three days the sword of the Lord—the plague in the land, with the angel of the Lord destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.” Now consider what answer I should take back to Him who sent me.’ And David said to Gad, ‘I am in great distress. Please let me fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are very great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man.’ So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.” – 1 Chronicles 21:9–14 [NKJV] Only after the plague had killed 70,000 men of Israel did the plague stop. This is a text that makes me worried and curious at the same time. What is the Lord trying to tell us and to teach us with this coronavirus plague? What price does God want this world to pay for the sins that humanity has committed, that such a worldwide plague has already exacted more than 1,500,000 souls and several times more than that have been infected and are having serious difficulties and are suffering lingering side-effects from this coronavirus plague. I have prayed much and begged the Lord for some insight into this plague! The name of it is coronavirus. Corona in all Latin languages means crown. The world and especially countries that call themselves “Christian countries!”, have removed the Lord from His throne and have placed their idols in His place! The so-called “Christian” West has placed the idol of liberal secular humanism that crowns “man” as their God. Prayer has been banned from schools, abortions are taking nascent lives from out of the womb, and putting them in a plastic garbage bag and throwing them in the trash, immorality that is clearly called an “abomination” in the word of God, both in the Old and in the New Testament, is celebrated and paraded in the streets of the major cities of the Holy Land and in major cities though the Western world. I don’t know for sure what are the causes and reasons for this, but from my reading of the Bible, I see God’s hand moving in His world. I suspect that this plague is also the work of God like all of the many plagues in the Bible. I have no reason to believe that it is an independent work of nature, an accident where some chromosome joined with some loose, wandering protein and decided to get married and multiply with the help of the breathing apparatuses being employed with human beings. No, this unusually engineered and intelligent virus is spreading so quickly among humans and is so deadly that it appears to be an act of cooperation, A joint work of man and God, designed to give us all a wake-up call and to direct us toward and make us aware of the need for major changes in our lives and in humanity as a whole. Let each one of us pray and seek the Lord and ask, “what should I be doing to hasten the mercy of God for His world.” You may be asking yourself “How does Joe’s introduction to this Jerusalem Prayer List relate to this Shabbat’s Torah reading?” The Torah reading from Genesis 32:3 starts with Jacob and his family approaching the land that the Lord had given to his grandfather Abraham. It’s been 21 years since he left the land of Canaan, and now Jacob has a family, at least two wives, and several children. He is a wealthy man who is now returning to the Land in order to claim his physical inheritance and his spiritual inheritance. While living in the diaspora, Jacob’s family has not been exactly clean from idolatry. In last week’s reading of the Torah we learned that his family had taken the household idols from Laban’s house with them. However, Jacob’s biggest challenge was his inevitable encounter with his brother Esau. Jacob must have well remembered why his mother Rebecca had wanted him to flee to northern Syria, to her brother Laban’s house. It was because Esau had decided in his heart to kill Jacob, following the death of Isaac. Now Jacob has to face Esau again, this time they are both successful men of means, each powerful in his own right. Fear and wisdom joined together to form a strategy for the safety of Jacob and of his family, when the encounter with Esau was to take place. The first step that Jacob takes before his meeting with Esau is to send a group of messengers ahead (to spy out Esau’s feelings toward Jacob and his family). Jacob wanted to know if after all these years Esau was still full of anger and still filled with murderous intent. The main reason for this first mission from Jacob to Esau was to gather intelligence and to give Esau a good reason to be interested in meeting with his brother Jacob. This is how Jacob’s messengers speak to Esau: “And he commanded them, saying, ‘Speak thus to my lord Esau, “Thus your servant Jacob says: ‘I have dwelt with Laban and stayed there until now. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants; and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight. ’”’” – Genesis 32:4,5 [NKJV] In other words, Jacob’s messengers tell Esau the following: “I am honoring you my older brother and informing you that if we don’t meet and make peace you have much to regret. I am a wealthy man, and it would pay for you to receive me and my family graciously.” It is a message of appeasement and a presentation of good reasoning for Esau to receive Jacob in peace. Esau’s response to Jacob’s overture of desire to have peace and prosperity with his brother Esau was less than peaceful. “Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, ‘We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.’” – Genesis 32:6 [NKJV] Esau’s response is, “I am coming to meet you, but I don’t trust you. “I am coming with an army of 400 to see you.” Jacob’s response shows that he understood exactly what Esau was communicating to him. Jacob responded by taking every precaution to protect himself and his family. “So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. And he said, ‘If Esau comes to the one company and attacks it, then the other company which is left will escape.’” – Genesis 32:7,8 [NKJV] Jacob’s steps to divide his camp and spread the risk between two locations, some distance from each other, was a wise military strategy. In fact the text explains it clearly. If Esau should attack one of the camps the other camp could still escape and survive. For me this story is both inspirational and depressing. Here you have two brothers from the same father and mother, in fact twins. They inspire fear against each other because there was some wrongdoing between them. There was some appearance of a brother taking advantage of a brother. The fact that Jacob has to fear and take strategic moves to protect himself and his family and possessions from his brother Esau is depressing to me. The hate that Esau still had for Jacob and the fear and guilt that was in the heart of Jacob after so many years of living in the diaspora is a sad commentary of the two brothers. The good thing is that blood is thicker than water and at the encounter of these two brothers at least for a moment, the past pain and hurt is forgotten and they fall into each other’s arms and hug and kiss each other. There were a few moments in their history when the brothers were able to see beyond the hurts of their past and to just concentrate on the present. Jacob prepares for this encounter by praying to God: “Then Jacob said, ‘O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, “Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you”: I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. For You said, “I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.”’”’” – Genesis 32:9-12 [NKJV] Let us look at Jacob’s prayer and learn from it some important things about ourselves and about our Lord: 1. The identity of God is clear and it is mentioned in the history of Jacob’s family in its relationship with the almighty God of Abraham and Isaac. 2. My (Jacob’s) return to the land is a result of your instruction and prophetic request that I ought to return to my family and to my country. 3. I am not coming to you O Lord with pride and with an attitude. I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and all the truth which you have shown me. 4. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother. You O Lord have given my father and grandfather Abraham the promises that my descendants will be as the sand of the sea, beyond numbering. Jacob’s prayer is an example of humility and submission to the Lord, and it also includes a strong argument that says: ‘Lord you have made my forefathers and me promises that we will become a great nation.’ How can your promises be fulfilled if Esau takes my life and destroys my family!? Before the meeting with Esau, God sends His angel to fight with Jacob by the Jabbok River. This is one of the most interesting texts in Genesis, and it is kind of purposely unclear in detail to create the mystery effect that it presents. The reason for this encounter at the Jabbok is a genius touch of God’s grace. Jacob had to become Israel, he had to stop trusting in his own wisdom, in his cunning, and in his abilities, and to learn that the ultimate outcome of his life, and I would add, of all our lives, is in the hands of the Lord Himself. The greatest challenge in our lives as disciples of Yeshua, is to stop trusting in ourselves and in our abilities, and our own hearts, and to put our hands in the hands of the One who parted the Red Sea and who allowed His children to cross over on dry ground. Our challenge is to not let go of the hand of Yeshua when we are walking through the storm, and crossing through the dark cold eternal night, and to keep looking to God for His blessings and to not let go of His hand! The event at the Jabbok River is a monumental event that has shaped Jacob and the entire nation of Israel and that continues to shape us as Jews and as disciples of the Messiah, up until this day. When Jacob and Esau finally encounter each other this is what happened: “But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.” – Genesis 33:4 [NKJV] All of Jacob’s fears, at least at that moment, disappeared, and the enmity and bitterness that had existed between them went up in smoke, and all that remained for at least those moments was, “we are brothers, we are of one blood, we have all that we need, we need each other!” Jacob continued to be humble and to honor his brother Esau, for the remainder of that encounter. This brotherly attitude however, didn’t continue for long. Moab and Edom didn’t cease their enmity toward Israel, and many future wars and much enmity was to remain between Israel and these neighbors. What we have to learn from these two brothers is that the one who is really the strong one in faith and in character ought to show honor and respect to his brother. Jacob regained his footing before God and men at the Jabbok River, and in life, we all, as disciples of the Messiah and as children of God must wrestle with our own angel as we cross the river of our lives.

Our dear sister BatSheva Derbaremdicker – is going in for cancer surgery on Sunday at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. Please pray for BatSheva and ask the Lord for healing and a speedy recovery for our dear sister.
Marcia my wife will have to have oral surgery next week. She has to have surgical extraction of two teeth, one next to the other. For diabetics surgery is always a bigger challenge. Please keep Marcia in your prayers.
Ilana, our dear 95-year-old sister, has been blessed by the young leaders of Netivyah, Yudah, and Daniel, and Hannah K, Hanna S, and Avigail, and others who have done a great job of caring for her. Netivyah has hired a full-time caregiver for Ilana. And Netivyah has to carry on the task of financing the caregiver until other solutions are found. The cost of a full-time caregiver for Ilana is not small, but our belief that we are doing the right thing and the only thing that can be done is from our fully trusting in the Lord and in His children to supply us with what is needed to care for our dear older sister, Ilana and for others in our congregation, who are and who have been for so many years, faithful servants of God. Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra in your donations for Ilana – just mention her name in your donations. You know very well that this is an extremely rare thing for me to ask for donations in general, and to ask support for a specific case such as Ilana’s, is especially rare and special. But, Ilana is one of those few spiritual giants who came to Israel after 1967 after the war, and volunteered in hospitals, and in the caring for Jewish people and just poured out their life and hearts for Israel and to be a good witness for Yeshua in this land. We must take care of Ilana as long as the Lord gives her life.

We received a prayer request from a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen, who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim (the “coerced ones”, descendants of 15th century Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who continued to secretly practice their Judaism, getting the State of Israel to accept them as Jews under the Law of Return has been an issue) and their plight. Livia is ill with a serious illness that needs healing and comfort from the Lord. Please pray for Livia and her health.
Keep a dear brother in Asia in your prayer. Philip Marc is his name. Philip is a young man with very serious cancer. He is a truth seeker and a faithful disciple of Yeshua who loves God and who is a lover of Israel.
Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.
Please keep praying for the whole list – just mention the names before the mercy seat of the almighty one of Israel and before Yeshua, our Lord and ask for healing and blessings. It is a great privilege to pray for others and there is a blessing for you when you bless others. This is a biblical principle.
Israel is still under closure with limited mobility and most of the economy and businesses are closed, at least for now. The economy is devastated.
I wrote last week in the Jerusalem Prayer List that it is a good work to pray for people whom you don’t know personally and to pray for the world to recover and bring an end to this horrible pandemic called the coronavirus. Corona is a crown, and I am not sure on the head of which king this virus is a crown.
1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.
2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the Body of the Messiah.
3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the Kingdom and in the Heavens attention is paid by the authorities of Goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.
a. Pray for all the former and present people involved in Korean Israel Bible Instruction Ministry.
b. Pray for the former board members of KIBI and those who need to repent and restore their relationship receive power from on high to do so.
c. Pray for those members and academics that are and were a part of the Israel Forum.
d. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel.
e. Pray for the spiritual and physical health of all those in Korea who are still praying for the body of the Messiah in Israel and specifically praying and supporting Netivyah. Bless them and inspire them and pray that they be filled with faith, hope and love for the Lord and for Israel.
Let us all pray and encourage our spiritual leaders to lead and to point us toward repentance and to confession of our sins and weaknesses, so that the Lord will lift this coronavirus from off of this earth and we will remember the Lord and seek to walk in His paths of righteousness and truth.
I appreciate the prayers for my health and my eye. I see so much better with my eye than I did before the surgery. Thank you, all your prayers, for me. Please continue to pray for me and for my wife, Marcia. Marcia has truly little energy these days and sleeps much most of the day. She is in pain from the rheumatoid arthritis and her eyes have cataracts but since she is diabetic it is too dangerous to operate. We need your prayers.
Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing. Our sister from Jerusalem, Hadassah, had her surgery for cancer and is now at home recovering. Please keep her in your prayers.
We are praying for a three-year-old little girl who is ill with a rare illness and cancer. She lives with her family in California and we need to pray for her and her family to receive attention and healing from the Lord and to be allowed to grow up to serve His kingdom.
I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer. I am praying that some of the local elders will go to Joy, anoint him with oil, and pray for his healing, in accordance with the instructions given by James the brother of Yeshua in his letter to the twelve tribes of Israel living in the diaspora.
Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Brazil. Brazil is one of the countries with a remarkably high count of sick and dead people from the coronavirus. We have brothers and sisters all around Brazil, and I ask you to just say a prayer for divine protection and for wisdom to keep them clear from this deadly plague. Pray for healing and strength for a 70-year-old man by the name of Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. Also include in your prayers Caique de Oliveira Becker These are people in Brazil who need the Lord’s special grace for healing. Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil.

Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.
You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:
1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.
2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.
3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.
4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
Businesses are closing and bankruptcy is happening to old established companies and businesses and even our national airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. People do not have money to put food on their tables. The number of people in need of basic food is growing.
Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage: www.netivyah.org and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

Anarchist elements have taken the center of Portland, OR, and turned it into chaos, and disorder. So, please pray for Portland, OR, and for our brothers and sisters in that city.
The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.
Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.
Third please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.
The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.
This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the Coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months.
We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children.
