파라샷 바옛쩨, 창세기 28:10~32:3, 이 말씀은 이번 안식일에 읽을 토라 포션입니다. 선지서에서 읽을 말씀은 호세아 12:13~14:10입니다. 신약성경에서 읽을 말씀은 요한복음 1:41-51입니다. 이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 창세기 중에서, 어쩌면 모세오경 중에서 비교적 더 흥미로운 말씀에 들 것입니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – November 26, 2020

Parashat Vayetze, Genesis 28:10 - 32:3, this text is the Torah reading for this Shabbat. The reading from the prophets is from the prophet Hosea 12:13 - 14:10. The reading from the New Testament is from John 1:41-51. The readings this Shabbat are some of the more exciting texts in the book of Genesis and maybe in the whole five Books of Moses.
You have here in these texts the makings of a major Hollywood movie that has intrigue, deception, love, exploitation, a journey of destiny, and the presence of the hand of God, acting behind the scene, as Deus Ex Machina. In order to understand the story we have to go back to last week’s portion of the Torah reading. Rebecca the mother of Esau and Jacob, right from the birth of these two men, has to deal with the most existential and modern question. At the very birth of these two men, Rebecca asks the following question: In the New King James Version the text is like this: “But the children struggled together within her; and she said, ‘If all is well, why am I like this?’ So she went to inquire of the Lord.” – Genesis 25:22 [NKJV] In the JPS, the Jewish Publication Society translation of Genesis, the text reads like this: “And the children struggled together within her; and she said: ‘If it be so, wherefore do I live?’ And she went to inquire of the Lord.” – Genesis 25:22 [JPS] The question was understood by the Jewish Publication Society translators, but it was not understood in the early 17th century by the Christian translators of the King James Version. This question of Rebecca reveals to us two things. First, her life with Isaac received meaning only at the birth of her two sons, Esau and Jacob. Her very existence was deeply affected by the birth of these two sons, knowing that even before they saw light outside of Rebecca’s womb, they were already struggling with each other. And second, The struggle between these two babies in their mother’s womb and Jacob’s holding on to the foot, to his brother Esau’s heel, during the birth process, was an indication that something was happening between these two babies that was of deep existential consequence. For this reason Rebecca, in my opinion was seeking the divinely ordained destiny of her only two children. Her question is: “If it be so, wherefore do I live?” Which ought to be spelled out in the following way: “If these, my only children, have started to fight with each other, already in my womb, what will be their future, and my future, living with these two?” Will my whole life be spent trying to referee between these two and in the end one will kill the other and our family’s future and the promises that God gave to Abraham and to Isaac, will not they be totally ruined? This existential question of Rebecca is, in my opinion, the reason that she acted the way she deed until, according to my opinion, she saw that the pre-birth ordained destiny of Jacob would be played out to the end. When Rebecca received a divine revelation following Jacob’s receiving his father’s blessing that Esau was planning to murder Jacob after Isaac’s death, she took the right and righteous steps to save her son from the murderous intents of his brother Esau. So, she helped Jacob to deceive Isaac and to receive Isaac’s blessing, and helped convince Isaac that their son Jacob needed to leave the country and to go to the north, to Haran, to her brother Laban. Isaac would have understood this because his father Abraham had also sent Eliezer his servant up north to Haran, to find a bride for him. So, it would have made sense to him to send Jacob up north. How did Rebecca know that Esau had decided in his heart to kill his brother Jacob? The answer that Jewish tradition gives is simple, Rebecca was a prophetess. She received revelation. Esau didn’t share the decision that he decided in his heart. He didn’t share with Rebecca and say to his mother, “As soon as my father dies I will kill the little weasel Jacob.” He decided in his heart, and the texts says: “So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ‘The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.’” – Genesis 21:41 [NKJV] How did Rebecca know what Esau’s plan was? The next verse gives us the answer: “And the words of Esau her older sons were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, ‘Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you.’” – Genesis 27:42 [NKJV] Who could report to Rebecca what Esau had said to himself in his heart? Only the Holy Spirit that knows what we have in our hearts could have heard the sound of Esau’s decision in his heart and reported to Rebecca that Esau was planning to kill Jacob after his father Isaac’s death. So, it is clear to me, like it is recorded in the Rabbinical tradition, that Rebecca was a prophetess. Now we can see that Rebecca was not an unfair and manipulative woman that was partial to her son Jacob. She had good reasons for her behavior with Isaac, and with Jacob. She knew from the birth of these two boys, Esau and Jacob, that there was unfairness and an unfair competition between them from her womb. Esau’s physical strength dominated in the birth and then there is his lack of appreciation for his position as the first born son of Isaac, and for his own inheritance. He showed a lack of interest for and dedication to, the family tradition and for his position in the family, and even for Isaac their father, and disdain for the promises of God to Abraham and to Isaac their father. So Rebecca decided to help God’s plan come together, and I love it when God’s plans are fulfilled! There is another major biblical principle that comes into play in this narrative. The principle of “mida k'neged mida” – by the measure that you measure you will be measured. Jacob took advantage of Esau’s weakness and eventually Laban takes advantage of Jacob’s weakness. By the end of the story Jacob will have paid in full for usurping Esau’s inheritance. He pays in cash. This we will learn from next Shabbat’s Torah reading.

Ilana, our dear 95-year-old sister, has been blessed by the young leaders of Netivyah, Yudah, and Daniel, and Hannah K, Hanna S, and Avigail, and others who have done a great job of caring for her. However, Netivyah had to hire a full-time caregiver for Ilana. The cost of a full-time caregiver for Ilana is not small, but our belief that we are doing the right thing and the only thing that can be done is from our fully trusting in the Lord and in His children to supply us with what is needed to care for our dear older sister, Ilana and for others in our congregation, who are and who have been for so many years, faithful servants of God. Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra in your donations for Ilana – just mention her name in your donations. You know very well that this is an extremely rare thing for me to ask for donations in general, and to ask support for a specific case such as Ilana’s, is especially rare and special. But, Ilana is one of those few spiritual giants who came to Israel after 1967 after the war, and volunteered in hospitals, and in the caring for Jewish people and just poured out their life and hearts for Israel and to be a good witness for Yeshua in this land. We must take care of Ilana as long as the Lord gives her life.

We received a prayer request from a dear sister Livia Schnell Nothen who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim (the “coerced ones”, descendants of 15th century Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who continued to secretly practice their Judaism) and their plight. Livia is ill with a serious illness that needs healing and comfort from the Lord. Please pray for Livia and her health.
Keep a dear brother in Asia in your prayer. Philip Marc is his name. Philip is a young man with very serious cancer. He is a truth seeker and a faithful disciple of Yeshua who loves God and who is a lover of Israel.
Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.
Please keep praying for the whole list – just mention the names before the mercy seat of the almighty one of Israel and before Yeshua, our Lord and ask for healing and blessings. It is a great privilege to pray for others and there is a blessing for you when you bless others. This is a biblical principle.
Israel is still under closure with limited mobility and most of the economy and businesses are closed, at least for now. The economy is devastated.
I wrote last week in the Jerusalem Prayer List that it is a good work to pray for people whom you don’t know personally and to pray for the world to recover and bring an end to this horrible pandemic called Coronavirus. Corona is a crown, and I am not sure on the head of which king this virus is a crown.
1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.
2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the Body of the Messiah.
3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the Kingdom and in the Heavens attention is paid by the authorities of Goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.
a. Pray for all the former and present people involved in Korean Israel Bible Instruction Ministry.
b. Pray for the former board members of KIBI and those who need to repent and restore their relationship receive power from on high to do so.
c. Pray for those members and academics that are and were a part of the Israel Forum.
d. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel.
e. Pray for the spiritual and physical health of all those in Korea who are still praying for the body of the Messiah in Israel and specifically praying and supporting Netivyah. Bless them and inspire them and pray that they be filled with faith, hope and love for the Lord and for Israel.
Let us all pray and encourage our spiritual leaders to lead and to point us toward repentance and to confession of our sins and weaknesses, so that the Lord will lift this coronavirus from off of this earth and we will remember the Lord and seek to walk in His paths of righteousness and truth.
I appreciate the prayers for my health and my eye. I see so much better with my eye than I did before the surgery. Thank you, all your prayers, for me. Please continue to pray for me and for my wife, Marcia. Marcia has truly little energy these days and sleeps much most of the day. She is in pain from the rheumatoid arthritis and her eyes have cataracts but since she is diabetic it is too dangerous to operate. We need your prayers.
Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing. Our sister from Jerusalem, Hadassah, had her surgery for cancer and is now at home recovering. Please keep her in your prayers.
We are praying for a three-year-old little girl who is ill with a rare illness and cancer. She lives with her family in California and we need to pray for her and her family to receive attention and healing from the Lord and to be allowed to grow up to serve His kingdom.
I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer. I am praying that some of the local elders will go to Joy, anoint him with oil, and pray for his healing, in accordance with the instructions given by James the brother of Yeshua in his letter to the twelve tribes of Israel living in the diaspora.
Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Brazil. Brazil is one of the countries with a remarkably high count of sick and dead people from the coronavirus. We have brothers and sisters all around Brazil, and I ask you to just say a prayer for divine protection and for wisdom to keep them clear from this deadly plague. Pray for healing and strength for a 70-year-old man by the name of Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. Also include in your prayers Caique de Oliveira Becker These are people in Brazil who need the Lord’s special grace for healing. Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil.
Please keep in your prayers our dear brother Pastor TJ in Taiwan. TJ is going through a new phase in his life, having lost his wife.
Keep Ruby Little in your prayers, our dear sister from Oklahoma City, who is also battling against cancer and add to your prayers Allison Howard Williams. Allison is the daughter of one of my incredibly special teachers and friends, Dr. George Howard. Allison is also battling cancer.

I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.
Please add to your prayers the family of Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy their son. I believe that this is a good thing for us to pray for friends and acquaintances who are Muslims. It is an act of love and reconciliation to carry before the throne of mercy those dear people who are seeking peace and righteousness looking toward the Lord for mercy and healing.

By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.
You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:
1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.
2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.
3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.
4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
Businesses are closing and bankruptcy is happening to old established companies and businesses and even our national airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. People do not have money to put food on their tables. The number of people in need of basic food is growing.
Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage: www.netivyah.org and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.
Third please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.
The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.
This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the Coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months.
We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families..
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish!
