======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List for Shabbat Aug 29, 2026 by Joseph Shulam On Shabbat, August 29, the Torah reading will be Parashat Ki-Tavo, a portion that is called in Hebrew Ki -Tavo (Deuteronomy 26:1–29:8). Ki-Tavo is the exact opposite of Ki-Tize that we read last Shabbat. Ki-Tize means when you go out, and Ki-Tavo means when you come in. Ki-Tize actually gives instructions about going out to war and what the rules and behavioral demands of the Torah are for those Israelites who are going out to war. The Torah reading of Ki-Tavo is instruction for the rules of behavior when you come into the land. Our reading of the Torah portion of Ki-Tavo that starts with the detailed legal stipulations of the Torah and transitions directly into the dramatic ceremonies of covenant renewal that the Israelites are instructed to perform upon entering the Land of Israel. The portion is built around two highly formalized declarations and a monumental public ceremony reflecting a structure very similar to ancient Near Eastern political treaties between the rulers and their citizens, moving from specific legal obligations to the promised blessings and curses of the covenant. The core commandments (Mitzvot) that the children of Israel are obligated to keep right from their entrance into the Land that God gave to Abraham, the Land of Canaan. The first Commandment is the celebration of the feast of Pentecost (The feast of the dedication of the first fruits that you gather in the land as an offering to God on the altar. 1. When the Israelites settle the land, they are commanded to bring the first yields of the Seven Species to the "house of God," the Tabernacle that was built in the wilderness and carried all the way to the land of Canaan. What makes this Commandment distinct is the mandatory liturgical recitation that accompanies it (Deut. 26:5-10). The farmer recites a precise historical formula, beginning with "A wandering Aramean was my father," recounting the descent into Egypt, the enslavement, and the divine deliverance into the Promised Land. This elevates an agricultural tax into an act of national memory, directly linking the physical harvest to God's fulfillment of His promises to Abraham. This is why the children of Israel are commanded now in this feast to confess that Abraham, our forefather, was not an Israelite but a wandering Aramean- not an Israelite, "A gentile!" This might seem kind of unnecessary to us in the 21st Century because we know the full story of Abraham and the slavery in Egypt and the exodus from Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea, and the conquest of the Land of Canaan… But to those people who were born in the wilderness of Sinai, the confession that their ancestor Abraham, the father of the Hebrew Nation, was a Gentile, not an Israelite, was a shocking and humbling confession. 2. Vidui Ma'aser (The Confession and verbal public agreement that they have to give 10% of their gain (their income) to the Lord) must have been shocking news. We must remember that they have been eating manna fresh from heaven every day for free. Suddenly, now they are about to enter the land of promise, and they receive, just before their entrance, this news that they will have to pay 10% of their fruits and vegetables and income to the Levites who were serving in the Tabernacle. The tithes were collected, but it was not the end. There was another kind of tax that was for the poor, and the strangers and the orphans and widows would also get a portion of their gain. After all the distribution of the different tithes and the agricultural cycle and harvest is finished, the Israelite farmers had to make a formal declaration that they had done their obligations to the Lord. In the third and sixth years of the sabbatical cycle, after all agricultural tithes have been distributed to the Levite, the stranger, the orphan, and the widow, the Israelite must make a formal, binding declaration before God. They had to confess before the Lord and state that they have not transgressed or forgotten any of the laws regarding the tithe! Our Torah portion this Shabbat has more than one ceremony that is required from the children of Israel before they enter and settle in the Land that God promised to Abraham and to his seed as an inheritance. Just before the children of Israel cross the Jordan River into the land of Canaan, Moses instructs the children of Israel how to formally seal the covenant after they cross the Jordan River. The Covenant Renewal Ceremony! This specific ceremony is the last thing that Moses does with the children of Israel before he turns around and climbs Mount Pisga to die there alone, and his grave is not found! Moses instructs the people on how to formally ratify the covenant once they cross the Jordan River: The people are to climb two high mountains in the center of the land, Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. These two mountains are opposite each other, with the city of Shechem (Nablus now) in the valley between the two mountains. One of the mountains on the east side of the Valley is Mount Ebal, and it is the mountain of curses. On the west side of the valley there is another high mountain called Gerizim. This mountain is the mountain of blessings. • They are to erect massive stones, coat them with plaster, and write all the words of the Torah upon them. This acts as a permanent, public legal witness to the laws that govern the land. • There are Blessings and Curses that are pronounced publicly by the people: The climax of the Parashah reading is the orchestration of the tribes on two facing mountains. Six tribes are to stand on Mount Gerizim to represent the blessings of obedience, while six stand on Mount Ebal for the curses that represent disobedience. The Levites, standing in the valley between, proclaim a series of severe curses against hidden societal crimes (such as subverting the rights of the stranger or moving a neighbor's landmark), to which the entire nation must answer with a loud "Amen". The text then launches into the Tochecha (rebuke): a stark, graphic, and extensive list of the national catastrophes, exile, and suffering that will befall the people if they abandon the covenant, contrasted with the profound agricultural and national blessings they will experience if they remain faithful. The profound relationship between Parashat Ki Tavo and the reading of Isaiah 60 is one of devastating conditionality answered by unconditional redemption. When we read together from Isaiah chapter 60, the Haftarah, we discover something shocking. Isaiah chapter 60 is almost point by point the reversal of the curses for disobedience that our Torah portion proclaims when Israel disobeys God's commandments. Isaiah 60 is a systematic, point-by-point theological reversal of the Tochecha (the curses = the Repromands) for disobedience of God's commands. Deuteronomy presents the terrifying vulnerabilities of the covenant—what happens if the connection to God and the Land is broken. Isaiah responds with a vision of ultimate, permanent restoration of all the good promises that God gave to Israel. Here is how the classical and textual themes directly mirror and resolve one another: We must today understand that the same God that was there with Moses and the children of Israel on the shore of the Jordan River and was giving the children of Israel the privilege to choose between blessings and curses is still the father and creator of this blue ball called earth and the same paradigms that were offered to the children of Israel on the shores of the Jordan River thousands of years ago are still our heavenly Father's rules and conditions. New technology and cellphones and airplanes and rockets to the moon have not changed our heavenly Father's character or His demands from humanity and specifically from the nation of Israel. I would include in this formula also those non-Jews that have entered into a covenantal relationship with the Messiah of Israel, Yeshua, and have died with Him and been raised into the newness of life by the Holy Spirit. As the Apostle Paul states in his letter to the Ephesians, "you were in the past strangers … and now through the blood of Yeshua you have become fellow inheritors of the covenants and promise of God. Here are some of the conditions that the blessings and curses that were named and shouted by the children of Israel on both sides of these two mountains that we even today must take into account: • Light vs. Darkness: Deuteronomy warns of a curse where the people will "grope at noonday as the blind grope in darkness" (Deut. 28:29). Isaiah opens with the ultimate reversal: "Arise, shine, for your light has come... though darkness covers the earth, His light will shine upon you" (Isa. 60:1-2). • The Role of the Nations: Deuteronomy warns that a foreign nation whose language is not understood will swoop down to besiege, devour, and scatter Israel (Deut. 28:49-52). Isaiah envisions the exact opposite: the nations walking to Jerusalem's light, bringing wealth, and foreign kings physically rebuilding the city's walls (Isa. 60:3, 10). • Isolation vs. Exaltation: The curses warn of becoming an object of horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all peoples (Deut. 28:37). Isaiah promises that Jerusalem will transform from being "forsaken and hated" into an "everlasting pride, a joy from generation to generation" (Isa. 60:15). Relevance for Our Days and Situation Looking at this textual dialogue from the reality of the Jerusalem hills today, the tension between these two passages is intensely palpable. It speaks directly to the dual reality of modern Jewish existence in the Land. I am not going to look back like the wife of Lot in Genesis, but I am going to look forward from where we stand today vis-à-vis the situation with the terrorist organizations supported, sent, directed, and inspired by Iran and other terrorist supporting Arab and Muslim organizations. To hate Jews and persecute Jews has become a cruel and deadly sport for so many of the people in the so-called Western world. The only hope that I personally have is for the Christians to wake up and stand for Israel and with Israel and with the Jewish population in their own countries. Stand as a wall 1000 times stronger than the Great Wall of China with the Jewish population in their own lands and protect them for Christ's sake. Stand with the state of Israel against the deception, lies, and subterfuge of the radical Islamic countries that dream of Jewish free land between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea. Who will stand with us, who will ensure that God's prophetic promises to the Jewish people will be fulfilled and the Jews will fulfill the prophetic promises of being a light to the nations! Yes, who will make it possible for Christians to come to Jerusalem and celebrate the feast of Sukkoth (Tabernacles) so that their countries will have rain in the next season (please see Zechariah 14)! As a summary of what I wrote above and a reminder, I am repeating a few of the main points of this Jerusalem Prayer List: 1. The Weight of Historical Memory (Bikkurim) Ki Tavo opens with the First Fruits declaration: "A wandering Aramean was my father..." (Deut. 26:5). This insists that settling the land and experiencing agricultural or economic prosperity must never be divorced from historical memory. In an era of profound national achievement and modern development in Israel, this text demands that every accomplishment be grounded in the context of the long, painful journey of the exile and the divine deliverance that ended it. 2. Holding Trauma and Hope Simultaneously: Living in the Middle East today means intimately understanding the anxieties of the Tochecha—the existential threats, the sieges, and the feeling of isolation among the nations. The physical and emotional scars of recent history make the warnings of Deuteronomy feel immediate rather than ancient. Yet, reading Isaiah 60 alongside it provides a mandatory shift in perspective. It demands spiritual resilience. It asserts that the darkness is a precursor to a dawn that the nations will eventually recognize. 3. The Mandate to be a Light: Isaiah's command to "Arise, shine" is not passive. It suggests that while the ultimate redemption is divine, the posture of the people must be active. Amidst intense geopolitical complexities and internal societal fractures, the vision of Jerusalem in Isaiah 60 is one of absolute justice and righteousness: "I will make peace your governor and well-being your ruler" (Isa. 60:17). The relevance today is the challenge to build a society that actually reflects that light, turning the restored sovereignty of the present day into the moral beacon Isaiah envisioned. Please keep praying for Israel and for our men in uniform's protection. We have leaders of Netivyah on the very front lines in Lebanon, fighting against a horrible enemy that has no end to cruelty and depravity. We need your prayers, and we need your financial support specifically for our soldiers on the battlefields, both in Gaza and in the north. Winter is coming to the Middle East, and there are specific needs that our men on the battlefields in the north need: winter equipment and clothing items that fit the weather up north. Those of you in the United States can contribute through https://givebutter.com/netivyah and get your USA 503 tax credit. Those from other countries can contribute to either website, like www.netivyah.org … God bless you all! The Prayer List we have not received an update for many of you on the prayer list in months. Bible Curious 5787 Two weeks before the war with Iran began, I met with the CEO of Magen David Adom (David’s Red Shield), Israel’s national emergency medical service. With about 2,000 employees and 35,000 volunteers, MADA responders are the first on the scene when missiles are intercepted or strike communities, providing urgent medical care and assessment. Netivyah International is seeking to raise $150,000 to fund one ambulance and a rapid-response tricycle vehicle to help reach those in need quickly. Please consider joining us in being a blessing to Israel during this critical time.
