by Joseph Shulam This coming Shabbat, all the Jewish Synagogues will be reading a double portion of the Torah, the portions Nitzavim and Vayeilech. The readings are Torah Reading: Deuteronomy 29:9 – 31:30 Haftarah: Isaiah 61:10 – 63:9 NT: Hebrews 13:1-16. The reading in Deuteronomy 29:9 starts with a very interesting Hebrew word: Nitzavim – the basic meaning of this word is to stand firm, be immovable. The wife of Lot in the book of Genesis, with the destruction of Sodom, was told not to turn around and watch what was happening to Sodom. She didn't listen, and she did turn around to look and became a pillar of salt. The Hebrew Word that describes what happened to Lot's wife is the same root as the word that our Torah reading starts with: Lot's wife became a Naziv Melach, a pillar of salt, and our Torah portion starts with the command. Here is the text from the NKJV English Version: "All of you stand today before the LORD your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel…" In Deuteronomy 29, Moses speaks to the Israelites about the covenant that God has established with them, emphasizing their collective identity and responsibility. Here, Moses reminds the people of their past experiences, particularly how God has guided and protected them (Deuteronomy 29:2-9). The call to remember the covenant signifies a mutual obligation where God pledges to be their God and the Israelites are bound to live according to His statutes. This concept of covenantal faithfulness is echoed throughout the Scriptures, particularly in prophetic texts. Isaiah 61:10 - 63:9 celebrates the joy of salvation and the themes of restoration and redemptive suffering. In these verses, the prophet expresses profound gratitude for the salvation that God has granted, stating, "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God" (Isaiah 61:10). The imagery of garments of salvation emphasizes the transformative nature of God's grace. Furthermore, the passage underscores that God has always been involved with His people, particularly in their suffering: "In all their affliction he was afflicted" (Isaiah 63:9). This active involvement highlights the faithful covenant relationship established at Sinai. The passage begins with the exhortation, "Let mutual love continue" (Hebrews 13:1). This directive resonates with the communal aspect of the covenant in Deuteronomy. As the Israelites were called to uphold each other in fidelity to God's law, so too the author of Hebrews encourages New Testament believers to live out their faith through acts of love, hospitality, and support. Additionally, Hebrews 13:5-6 conveys assurance of God's presence, stating, "For he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you,'" paralleling the promises made in Deuteronomy of God's faithfulness to His covenant (Deuteronomy 29:9). The ideas that are common to all the readings on this Shabbat are all connected with the concept of covenant (contract) between God and Israel and between God and all humans. It is wonderful to understand that God has come down on Mount Sinai and made a contract with Israel designed for all humanity. God made Israel the carrier and responsible for God's covenant (contract) and, in the fullness of time, sent Yeshua to demonstrate the seriousness of that covenant both for the good times and also for the times of disobedience and disregard for God and for His covenant with the nation of Israel and through Israel's commission to spread that covenant with the whole world. What we read in the Torah portion that is going to be read in all the synagogues in the world on the next Shabbat is remarkable and unique in the history of the nations. God made a contract with all the signs of a legal contract, a document shared first with Israel and then through Yeshua our Messiah, and the Lord was spread in every nation and throughout all the earth. It is freely given and freely received, and it is outright unwise for people to reject it. Because we as humans know that our days on this earth are numbered, and we don't know exactly what is waiting for us after our death. If there is one percent chance that what the Bible teaches and what God has done for us according to the Bible, both old and New Testament that it is true it would be completely foolish to ignore or reject God's covenants. As a good jew when I was just 16 years old, and I was offered to read the New Testament, I understood that there is no life insurance that covers what will happen to me after death! There is, however, the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation that has covenants and prophecies that assure us of a good place and a bad place that souls go to after death. The texts from Deuteronomy 29, Isaiah 61:10 - 63:9, and Hebrews 13:1-6 serve as profound biblical reflections that illuminate themes of covenant, faithfulness, and a God inspired community. Each passage, while distinct in context and purpose, weaves together a tapestry of God's enduring relationship with His people and the ethical implications that arise from it. Covenantal Faithfulness and Divine Promises Deuteronomy 29 outlines God's covenant with Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised Land.
