by Joseph Shulam On May 30th, 2026, The Hebrew Date is 21 SIVAN 5786, in all the Jewish synagogues around the world they will read the following Torah portion from Numbers -8:1 12:16, and the same reading from the prophets from Zechariah 2:14-12:16, and we add a parallel reading also from the New Testament the reading will be from Matthew 14:14-Just for your information the Hebrew date on the Hebrew Calendar is actually a very interesting word: On May 30th, 2026, the reading from the Torah is from Numbers -8:1 12:16, and the name of this Torah portion in English is from the first verse of chapter 8: "And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: "Speak to Aaron, and say to him, 'When you arrange the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand.'" This one word in the Hebrew Bible, "Be-Ha-A-Lot-Cha" means "When you arrange the Lamps!" (NKJV). The meaning of this in the context of the book of Numbers, chapter 8, is that the High Priest was preparing the candelabra in the tabernacle to light it. He was filling the oil cups for each candle and fixing the lamps so that they could give light for 24 hours in God's tent of meeting. The Hebrew language is a very small and very compacted language that is why sometimes one Hebrew word can have the meaning of a whole verse. The reading from the prophets is from Zechariah 2:14-12:16. Such a long reading from the prophets is very unusual and may be the longest text from the Torah on Shabbat in Hebrew. It might look like something simple, but anything that is connected with the tabernacle and the service of the priests around it was extremely important. We have the story of Uza, who was worried when King David was moving the tabernacle, the lamp stand, the table of the showbread, and the ark of the covenant, where the Ten Commandments that Moses brought down from Mount Sinai. The road from Kiryat Yearim (today, Abu Gosh) to Jerusalem has some very steep hills. So, this well-meaning priest, Uza, was worried about the ark of the covenant falling off the cart and tried to stabilize it, and God struck him dead for touching the ark of the covenant. For this very reason, Aaron, the High Priest, had to prepare and light the candelabra in the Tent of Meeting. Today is Sunday, May 24, the day after the feast of Pentecost. The Feast of Pentecost is one of the three main pilgrimage feasts in the Bible. The Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage three times per year to Jerusalem to worship God and bring their gifts to the temple and hand them to the priests to place these gifts and use them for the glory of God. The first Shabbat after the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot / Pentecost) carries a very deep spiritual and theological message in Jewish tradition. The Torah portion from Numbers 8:1–12:16 (traditionally connected with Beha’alotcha), the Haftarah from Zechariah, and the New Testament reading from Matthew 14 are not random selections. They are tied together by several major themes: 1. God Dwelling in the camp of Israel Among His People. 2. Divine Light and Revelation from God's presence in the camp of Israel. 3. Leadership and Spiritual Authority ordained by the authority of God in the priesthood of Israel from the tribe of Levi. 4. The Nations Coming to God through His choice for Israel to be the light for all the nations – this task given to Israel is already hinted at in God's calling of Abraham. 5. Faith versus Complaining and Unbelief. Building the camp of Israel and preparing the nation that wandered 40 years in the wilderness with daily miracles and provision from God, like the manna that came from heaven every morning fresh and free. 6. The Transition from Sinai Revelation of God's law (The Torah) to a nation with revelation and experience that brought them to the land of Israel, ready to face the challenges with Spiritual Maturity. 1. THE TORAH PORTION — NUMBERS 8:1–12:16 The section begins with the lighting of the Menorah: "When you arrange the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the lampstand." Numbers 8:2. The Menorah becomes the opening symbol of the whole portion, and the divine light becomes the eternal task for the nation of Israel to serve the pagan nations of the world. We see this not only in the Torah but all the way to the prophets like Isaiah and all the way to today's Israel returning back to the land given to our father Abraham as a possession. The Feast of Shavuot – seven weeks after the end of the Passover. Shavuot celebrates the fifty days of the Wheat and Barley harvest in the land of Israel. These important cereals have to be harvested before the first rains come in Israel. The Torah commands Israel to count these days from the last day of the Passover Feast, fifty days, and celebrate by bringing the first fruits of the spring and early summer to the Temple in Jerusalem and presenting them to the Lord with gratitude and thanksgiving. Shavuot also celebrates the giving of the Torah and the responsibility of Israel to live up to the command to be a light for the nations. The giving of the Torah, Shavuot is also the holiday for the gentile converts to Judaism. The Story of Ruth, King David's grandmother, all happened around the feast of Shavuot. In the book of Isaiah, there are two commands for Israel to have the responsibility to become a "light to the nations." • Isaiah 49:6. "Indeed, He says, 'It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.'" • 11. Isaiah 51:4. "Listen to Me, my people; And give ear to Me, O My nation: For law will proceed from Me, And I will make My justice rest as a light of the nations." • 12. Isaiah 56:6–7. "Also, the sons of the foreigner. Who join themselves to the LORD…. Even them I will bring to My holy mountain…. For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations." Jewish tradition understood the Menorah not merely as furniture in the Tabernacle, but as a symbol of Israel's spiritual mission. This fits perfectly with the season after Shavuot: Israel received the Torah at Sinai not merely for private holiness, but to illuminate the world. This theme later appears strongly in Zechariah chapter 14, and it is connected to another of the major pilgrimage biblical holidays that is celebrated by Yeshua and his disciples in Jerusalem, which is the feast of Sukkoth – Tabernacles. It is important to me to share with you these biblical themes that have to do with the nations and Israel, because especially now, the growth of antisemitism is a growing worldwide plague. I think that it is so with God's permission to wake up Israel and the Christian Church worldwide to realize that if they don't stand with Israel and support Israel and see the righteousness of Israel and the Jewish people in comparison to the evil and corruption of the world around us than God will take action and from my knowledge of the Scriptures when God takes over after the grace comes the judgement. God's judgment is always much harsher and more painful than anything that men can do to each other. 2. THE CLOUD, THE TRUMPETS, AND GOD'S GUIDANCE. In Numbers 9–10, We find the instructions of God to Israel concerning the Shechina (The cloud of God that accompanied Israel for most of their 40 years of wandering in the Sinai desert) Who ever has traveled or walked any significant time or distance in the desert and especially in the Sinai desert will witness that it is not simple to wonder and look for some specific location in the desert. All the train look almost the same, the colors are almost the same and there are very few specific things that you can mark and identify because some of the sand shifts and the rocks all look pretty much the same. I have to share with you my own experience in the Sinai desert. In 1971 Dr. John McRay, one of my best friends and teachers, came with his family to Israel to dig in the Greek Orthodox part of Capernaum. He had some time, so Dr. John McRay, Neil Christy, my disciple and childhood friend Sam, an Israeli Arab, and the first Muslim that I brought to the Lord, loaded a Volkswagen van and took off for the Sinai Desert, on the first day that we entered the Sinai Desert, about 2 p.m. Our Volkswagen got stuck in the sand and we couldn't move. The Americans, Dr. McRay and Neil Christy, tried their American ingenuity, and the more they worked, the deeper the wheels of the Volkswagen Van dug into the sand. About two hours later, we see a black dot on the horizon coming towards us. It was a young Arab Bedouin (nomadic tribes of the desert). He walked right to us, and when he arrived, he saw our predicament and offered help. Not for free at all. He demanded that if he helped us, we would have to take him 90 kilometers in the desert to the place where his tribe is camped. Well, we had no choice but to agree to take him 90 kilometers to his tribe's encampment. He didn't wait – just as we agreed, he took off to the desert horizon and came back with palm branches and a bucket made from old car tires full of water. He stuck the palm branches under the wheels of our car, poured the water on top of them, and told Dr. John McRay to get in, start the car, slowly give gas, and start moving forward. What do you know! This nomadic Arab Muslim desert dweller saved us, and we took him 90 kilometers to the encampment of his tribe. Another interesting thing that happened on the way to this Arab Beduins' place was about half way there we see another Bedouin seating on the sand and next to him is a small fire with red – hot coals and a copper wire in his hand wrapped with leaves and a big boom box cassette player open apart and this Bedwin is working on it soldering electronic parts with a copper wire fixing his boom-box. Neil Christy said this boom box recorder will never work. Well, dear brothers and sisters, on the way back after delivering the other Bedouin who helped us dig the Volkswagen out of the sand, we pass on the same track, and guess what – the Bedouin is sitting and listening to a famous Arab female singer called Um Kultom. He is listening and has a smile from ear to ear. Never underestimate the authenticity and creativity of the desert dwellers. The cloud leads Israel, The silver trumpets gather the people, and the camp journeys according to God's command. Shavuot is not only about receiving revelation — it is about learning how to walk with God afterward and how to show God gratitude for his mercy that endures forever. God took Israel after the exodus from Egypt. From slavery to freedom, so that Israel must now mature from: These forty years in the wilderness, and everything that happened in these 40 years was a kind of boot-camp and renovation waiting for a new generation that is born in the desert and has eaten manna every day bread from heaven. Israel had to become a holy nation guided directly by God. With individual experiences with God. A nation that had to develop personal faith and not religion or religious traditions. Sometimes I pray and think of my own life and experiences, and how hard it was to be cast out of my family and home at the age of 16, and miraculously, two weeks later, ending in Valdosta, Georgia, in the USA, all alone. God knew all along what is happening and what will happen to me. I had a very difficult time getting to the USA and when I got to New York John F Kennedy airport in New York no one was there to greet me. I had 50 dollars in my pocket, and I had to get to Valdosta Georgia, and I had no idea where it is and how to get there. Good people along the way gave me directions on how to fly from New York to Atlanta Georgia. The ticket was 43 dollars in 1965. I got to Atlanta airport, and an American Negro who was cleaning the airport at 1 a.m. directed me on how to get to the Greyhound station in Atlanta. I made it to the Greyhound station and asked how much it is to buy a ticket for Valdosta, Georgia. The man said 7 dollars. I didn't have seven dollars. But I managed to play an arched game with some navy soldiers on the way to Florida. I made the 4 dollars and got the ticket to Valdosta, and when the bus driver announced that we were in Valdosta, Brother Bill Long and his wife were waiting for me at the station because I called them from the bus station in Atlanta. I share this with you because my life has often carried me through desert and dry ground, but God has always had someone – somehow – a messenger of grace to help me cross the desert and arrive to places of living waters. This private message that I share with you in the above paragraph becomes crucial later in the chapter when the people fail through complaining and unbelief. 3. THE GREAT SIN OF COMPLAINING Numbers 11 is one of the darkest chapters in the wilderness narrative. The people of Israel that were slaves in Egypt complain about the menu of their food and about the leadership of Moses and Aaron, his brother. The desert is not exactly the place to want fancy food cooked by a French cook from the Cordon Bleu in Paris. They wanted bread and meat, and maybe a carrot or an apple. The big wonder for me is that God heard their cry and demands. If it was me in God's place, they would have seen other kinds of wonders, not free of charge Manna from Heaven. The Manna in the wilderness was a very wonderful food that would change its taste according to the people's desire of their hearts. Most Christians and even Bible teachers don't know this, but in the Biblical narrative, there is more than one description of what the Manna in the wilderness tasted like: Here is the description of the manna's taste: 1. FIRST DESCRIPTION — EXODUS 16:31 This is the earlier and more positive description, given shortly after the manna first appeared. Exodus 16:31 (NKJV) "And the house of Israel called its name Manna. And it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey." The manna is described as: sweet, pleasant, delicate, and similar to honey cakes. God was gracious and provided more than they asked, and it was all free of charge from heaven and fresh every morning, ready for breakfast, much more than cornflakes. In the Bible sweet and honey symbolizes God's blessings and goodness. 2. SECOND description of how the Manna tasted from Numbers 11:7–8 (NKJV) "Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its color like the color of bdellium". This time, people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, cooked it in pans, and made cakes of it; "and its taste was like the taste of pastry prepared with oil." This time, the people of Israel had to work to prepare it for eating. Because there are these two different descriptions of the taste of the Manna, the Rabbis in the first century and second centuries A.D. interpreted that the Manna changed its taste and didn't stay the same taste all the time. Other Rabbis understood that the Manna changed its taste according to the desire of the Israelite housewives to feed their families with variety. So, the Rabbis interpreted that the Manna actually received the tastes that the people wanted. The biggest lesson from these events in the wilderness is that even after the Lord provided them with manna from heaven fresh and free of charge every morning, they continued to complain about the Manna, hardship, leadership, and even about God's provision. This is one of my central lessons connected to Shavuot: Israel heard the voice of God at Sinai, yet only a brief time later, they complained, rebelled, and longed to return to Egypt for slavery again. Dear Brothers and sisters, I remember my dear father, who was a genuinely very giving and generous person. But he could not and did not tolerate me or any member of my family being ungrateful. I learned by myself that spiritual experiences alone are insufficient without faith, discipline, and gratitude. Please remember that God doesn't tolerate ungrateful children! This same theme appears in Matthew. 4. THE SEVENTY ELDERS AND THE SPIRIT Numbers 11 holds another critical section: the Spirit resting upon the seventy elders. "I will take off the Spirit that is upon you and will put the same upon them." Numbers 11:17 This becomes extremely important in later Jewish and New Testament theology. Shavuot became associated not only with Torah, but with the giving of the Spirit. In later Jewish expectation, when the Messiah comes, there will be an outpouring of the Spirit of God on the people. Acts chapter 2 is a kind of demonstration of two things: the giving of the Torah in Mount Sinai by Moses and the reenactment of the same signs and phenomena on Pentecost in Jerusalem. The noise and the speaking in tongues, and the flames of fire. All of these things that happen in Acts chapter 2 are taken from Exodus chapter 20 when God speaks to the people of Israel who are encamped around Mount Sinai. 2. This creates an important bridge toward the New Testament understanding of Pentecost. The parallels between Acts 2 and the giving of the Torah in Exodus are a bridge that the Holy Spirit gives us to make the connection and stress the continuation of the same God and the same Spirit and the authenticity of God's promises to Israel in the words of the Torah and the prophets. 5. MIRIAM AND AARON CHALLENGE MOSES Numbers 12 describes Miriam and Aaron criticizing Moses. God responds dramatically: "Why then were you not afraid to speak against My servant Moses?" Numbers 12:8 God's dealing with the criticism and attitudes of Moses's Sister and Brother is emphasized in this section: The power and truth of God-given spiritual authority! The humility needed for those chosen by God to lead his people. And then comes the extraordinary statement: "Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth." Numbers 12:3 • This fits the post-Shavuot message beautifully. After revelation comes: submission, humility, and respect for divine order. • Without these qualities in the leadership, there is no holy community that is led and directed by God's Holy Spirit! This prayer list is becoming much longer than I expected. The content is very important for us to understand. I will have to do some video of the texts of the Haftarah from Zechariah! Yes I am sick with cancer that is true. The cancer is non-Hoskins Follicular cancer in the pancreas, lungs, stomach. It is a slow growing cancer. There are no treatments with drugs and only medical following with MRI’s and Gastroscopes, nuclear FDG Cat Scans. Joseph is working full time and writing, preaching, traveling internationally and sharing the preaching in Jerusalem sharing the pulpit with our young leader Yehuda who is also doing a fine work for Netivyah. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. Update Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.
