======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 23 May, 2026
by Joseph Shulam The readings on Shabbat, May 23, are from the Torah portion that is named Nesso from the book of Numbers 4:21–7:89, and from Judges 13:2-25, and from the book of Acts 21:17-26. One of my Arab disciples asked this question: "We are reading these old texts written thousands of years ago and I don't know how we can relate to some things that were written in a totally different world from ours, a world that didn't have cars and airplanes These people lived in the wilderness of Sinai eating Manna for breakfast every day that they didn't have to buy?" Torah Portion Nasso and Its Relevance for us Today! The Torah portion Nasso, which is found in the book of Numbers (Bamidbar), chapter 4:21 – 7:89, encompasses a range of important teachings and laws that are significant not just in a historical context but also have practical and spiritual relevance for us today. A relevance that transcends cars and airplanes and computers and all the modern "stuff" that we enjoy in this 21st Century. The Torah was relevant in my opinion from the day that Moses came down from Mount Sinai after spending 40 days and nights up on the top of this ancient mountain receiving from the Almighty God of Israel and of all humanity. Although the Torah was given to the Nation of Israel, it is addressing both our physical issues and needs and our relationship with the almighty God who created all of us humans and the world that we live in. As disciples of (Yeshua) Jesus in contemporary Israel, every word of the bible from Genesis to Revelation is not only relevant, but it is important. The Torah addresses every aspect of human life and every need that is essential for the good life that we all need daily. Our reading on this Next Shabbat of May 23, 2026, is, in my opinion, as important as it was to the children of Israel in the wilderness and may be even more important for us today. Although we are not living now in the wilderness, the principles and rules that were given by Moses to the children of Israel then can teach us today the essential elements of life today. The most basic and much-needed principles that, as humans who live in this world, I will take at least one such teaching from our Torah portion as an example: The Torah portion Nasso, found in the Book of Numbers, is rich with teachings that maintain their relevance even in the 21st century. This portion deals with subjects such as the priestly service, the laws of the Nazarites, the responsibilities of leadership, and the importance of community holiness. One key teaching that stands out is the importance of maintaining integrity of the laws and moral standards in the community, is the concept of the "suspected adulteress" ritual (Numbers 5:11-31). To us today, with the modern court system in Israel that is being attacked by some of the Israeli political parties, this Torah portion and the strange but effective ritual and instruction that the Torah gives us underscores the need for accountability and the careful handling of suspicion and trust within relationships. I can confess that this principle relating to the laws of evidence is something that I wish we had in Israel today. I think that it would be much more effective than the electronic machines that are considered as discerning between a lie and the truth spoken by the suspected criminal. In our high-tech world riddled with social media, virtual interactions, and rapid communication, the essence of trust is perhaps more important than ever. Relationships—be they personal, professional, or social—require a foundation of reliability and honesty. The action of addressing allegations, as highlighted in our Torah reading of the portion Nasso, emphasizes the need to address disputes with clarity and integrity rather than allowing groundless suspicions to fester. I have lived in Israel since the age of 1 year old, and the teaching in our Torah portion Nesso invites a contemporary reflection on how we navigate rumors and accusations in an age where disclosure can occur at lightning speed, and information can be disseminated widely before verification. I am sad to say that, as Jews living in Israel today, our court system is floundering and not using these Torah principles to settle important questions in our court system. Another significant teaching from Nasso revolves around the notion of the Nazarite vow (Numbers 6:1-21). There might be some Jews who have taken a Nazarite vow according to the Torah, but personally I don't know of any such individuals that have taken and live under such vows. This vow involved abstaining from wine, avoiding contact with the dead, and allowing hair to grow long. This commitment is actually an issue of personal sacrifice of our personal freedoms, a dedication to a higher purpose, and distinguishing oneself from societal norms. In today's fast-paced, consumer-driven environment, the decision to live intentionally and to make deliberate choices is very rare, and if some do make this choice, it becomes diluted. Some people in a sectarian contemporary application of the Nazarite vow might be seen in practices such as extreme fasting and abstaining from drinking alcohol or eating Vegan food only or even abstaining from the use of computers and electronic things like cellphones. This is only my opinion, but I don't know personally such people in my circles. Just as the Nazarite took a stand against the prevailing culture, modern individuals can seek to define their paths amidst distractions and expectations, embracing periods of reflection and self-discipline. Actually I just now remember some of our old brothers survivors of the Nazi Holocaust that had similar such vows like the Nazarite vows that I read in our Torah portion for this next Shabbat. We had a wonderful dear orthodox Jewish brothers who were in Nazi concentration camps during World War II that did live such holy lives. They became disciples of Yeshua the Messiah in the Nazi concentration camps. Immigrated to Israel after the war and were secret disciples of Yeshua until I met them and they discovered that I too am a disciple of Yeshua the Messiah, and our paths never separated until their death. I am looking forward to spending eternity with both of them and others like them in Heaven. In the realm of faith, this brings to mind a parallel reading from Habakkuk 3:19, where it states, "The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills." This verse reinforces the idea of resilience and perseverance, essential qualities in an ever-changing world whose culture challenges the life of faith in God and especially faith in Yeshua, our Lord and Messiah. The recognition of a higher power providing strength and guidance is a comforting message, offering that amidst technological chaos, individuals can find stability by grounding themselves in faith and purpose and living in obedience to God's commandments especially the commandments that we have from the teaching and mouth of the Lord Yeshua himself, but also the commandments like in Acts 15 given by the apostles and based on the Bible from Genesis on to revelation. Furthermore, Matthew 13:24-44 presents the parables of the wheat and the tares, and the mustard seed. These illustrations encapsulate the concept of growth, patience, and distinguishing the good from the evil among human endeavors. In the age of cell-phones and computers where information can become misleading and intentions ambiguous, the parable calls for discernment—an essential skill for identifying truth and moral virtue amidst the complexity and challenges of our modern lifestyle. In conclusion, the teachings from Torah portion Nasso and its complementary texts remain significantly relevant, imploring us to uphold integrity, embrace personal commitment, and seek discernment in our relationships and choices. As we navigate an electronic world filled with distractions and rapid communication, these fundamental principles provided in ancient texts can guide us in maintaining a life of purpose and authenticity amidst the noise of modernity. This portion spans Numbers 4:21–7:89 and includes various themes, such as the duties of the Levites, the Nazirites, the laws of purity, and the priestly blessing. We don't have a temple today for Jews or for Messianic Jews, and therefore, I am skipping the portion of our Torah reading that deals with the details of the life of the Levites and Priests in Judaism. I am myself a Levite from a family of Levites but there are not many functions that are practical for me as a Levite other than getting the privilege in our synagogue on Shabbat to bless the children and the congregation with the Levitical Aaronic blessings that is a part of our Torah reading on every Shabbat. For Jewish disciples of Jesus in Israel, this teaches the importance of finding and fulfilling our personal calling within the community. Just as the Levites had their specific roles, modern believers are encouraged to identify their unique gifts and serve in ways that benefit the broader community. This can manifest in various forms of service, whether in local congregations, charity work, or communal support. The Torah portion Nasso that we are reading on this next Shabbat has in it Laws of Purity. I will not write about it on this prayer list for Shabbat Nasso. The reason is simple: this Jerusalem Prayer list is becoming too long. I will write on one of the most important blessings in the Bible, the Priestly Blessing attributed to Aaron, the brother of Moses, as the High Priest of Israel, and all of his descendants, the priests. The priests in Israel are all those who have the family name Cohen in all its spelling variations. Nasso concludes with the priestly blessing (Numbers 6:22-27), a powerful and beautiful invocation that illustrates God's desire to bless and keep His people. The blessing encompasses aspects of peace, protection, and divine favor. The words, "May the Lord bless you and keep you," have become a central part of Jewish liturgy and serve as a reminder of God's constant presence and care. In our congregation in Israel, every Shabbat we bless the children from small to older and the families. The blessing is done by a brother who has a priestly family name like Cohen or Katz, and other names of the Priests in Israel. Relevance Today For Jewish disciples of Yeshua (Jesus), this blessing can serve as a foundation for understanding how to approach God's intentions towards humanity. Recognizing the desire for shalom (peace) in personal lives, communities, and our nation is particularly poignant in today's Israel, where many face conflict and uncertainty. Embracing the notion of being a blessing to others aligns with the New Testament teachings of loving one's neighbor and being witnesses to the good news in the Torah. Throughout the portion of Nasso, there is a strong emphasis on community—whether through the responsibilities of the Levites, the contributions of the Nazirites, or the collective experience of seeking purity and blessing. In Israel today, building a strong Jewish community that supports each other through faith and action can echo the lessons learned in Nasso. Relevance Today for disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) to read and practice especially some of the social and community principles is in my opinion absolutely essential if what is called "Christianity will survive in purity and faithfulness to the text and commands and practices that are absolutely required in the Apostolic Texts of the New Testament: I confess that I have deep concern and fear that if the Christian communities and denominations will continue in the same trajectory as they have in the last 100 years these things will happen: European churches both Catholic and Protestant will not survive the tsunami of Islam that is washing the shores of the traditional Christian communities of all denominations with Islamic majorities in their cities and civil institutions. In a world marked by faith and religion, and especially in Western Europe, it is going to fall like a ripe apple into Islam. If the so-called Christian communities don't stop and work toward unity (not organizational unity, but social and spiritual resistance against division and strife, fostering community within faith circles is essential for cooperation and celebrating differences, nurturing relationships, and working together for the common good of those who see themselves as disciples of Jesus. As disciples of Jesus, Jewish believers can model acceptance and love while proclaiming their faith, contributing positively to the broader Israeli society. Conclusion The Torah portion Naso is rich with teachings that transcend time and culture. As Jewish disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) in Israel, we must reflect on the roles they play in our communities, the call to live a life devoted to God, the importance of purity, and the power of blessing. We are invited into a deeper relationship with God and with each other. By embracing the principles found in Nasso, modern believers can create a vibrant expression of their faith that both honors their heritage and meets contemporary challenges with hope and love. We need to overcome the sectarian roots of Western Christian denominations that were planted by well-meaning outside missionaries who intended for good, but planted the poisoned plants of denominational division and sectarian attitudes of their denominations imported from the West. Thus, Nasso not only connects them to their past but also guides their actions in crafting a future marked by faith, community, unity, purity, and blessedness that can give strength and light to be shared with all those around us in the land of Israel and hopefully in messianic communities the world over. Yes I am sick with cancer that is true. The cancer is non-Hoskins Follicular cancer in the pancreas, lungs, stomach. It is a slow growing cancer. There are no treatments with drugs and only medical following with MRI’s and Gastroscopes, nuclear FDG Cat Scans. Joseph is working full time and writing, preaching, traveling internationally and sharing the preaching in Jerusalem sharing the pulpit with our young leader Yehuda who is also doing a fine work for Netivyah. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.
Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

Keijo and Salme were in a car accident and Salme is recovering from a broken chest bone. Please keep them in your prayers for full recovery.

She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Irina L. needs a kidney transplant. Her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his father’s health that is in decline.
Shirleyann - sounds great. I spoke with her, and her coverage for extra medical supplies has come through. She still needs prayers for all the paperwork for her Medicare and Medicaid to be completed. There was some follow-through that was not done after staff told her it would be done.

Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)

Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
