======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 16 May, 2026
by Barry Shulam in Martinsville, VA Torah Numbers 1:1 - 4:20 (Badmidbar) In the Desert Prophets Hosea 2:1-22 New Testament 1 Corinthains 12:12-20 Shalom, Bamidbar teaches us why God prepares His people long before the battle comes. This week’s portion is Bamidbar, Numbers 1:1-4:20, The reason you see a difference in the English name of Numbers and the Hebrew name BaMidbar (In the desert) is because the first word in Hebrew was in the desert however you see so many numbers in these chapters that the English name became numbers. Stick with me and you will see what really is missed when you consider this book just about numbers! The Haftarah is from Hosea 2:1-22. means “in the wilderness,” and it begins with God organizing Israel in the desert, only two years after He brought them out of Egypt. “And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt…” Numbers 1:1, JPS Then God commands Moses: “from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: ye shall number them by their hosts, even thou and Aaron.” Numbers 1:3, JPS That is a huge shift. These people had been slaves. A slave is trained to survive, not to lead. A slave learns to obey the voice of a master, not to hear the voice of God. A slave thinks day by day, brick by brick, ration by ration. A slave is not taught to build a future, defend a people, or inherit a land. But in Bamidbar, God begins changing their identity. They are no longer only escapees from Egypt. They are becoming tribes. They are becoming a camp. They are becoming a people. They are on the way to becoming a nation with a land, a calling, a priesthood, and a destiny. This is why the census is taken. God is not merely counting bodies. He is teaching former slaves to stand up and be counted. He is teaching them that every tribe has a place, every family has a name, every person has responsibility, and every warrior must know where he belongs. To go from slavery to an army is not a small step. It is a transformation of the mind. An army requires discipline. Slavery produces fear. An army requires unity. Slavery produces suspicion and self-preservation. An army requires courage. Slavery teaches people to avoid risk. An army requires obedience to a shared mission. Slavery teaches people to obey only because punishment is near. God had to rebuild the inside of Israel before they could inherit the land outside of them. That is why the wilderness journey was necessary. The wilderness was not only a place of delay. It was a place of training. God was teaching Israel how to walk as free people, how to camp around His presence, how to follow His cloud, how to listen to His Word, and how to live as one people under one God. The war did not fully come right away. Deuteronomy later looks back on the wilderness years and says: “And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the generation, even the men of war, were consumed from the midst of the camp, as the LORD swore unto them. Deuteronomy 2:14, JPS Only after that long wilderness season does Moses tell the next generation: “Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of Arnon; behold, I have given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.” Deuteronomy 2:24, JPS God began forming Israel as an army in Numbers 1, only two years after Egypt, but the generation that actually began the later battles of possession appears in Deuteronomy after nearly thirty-eight more years of wilderness testing. God was preparing them long before the decisive conflict arrived. This is a lesson for us today: prepare now. Do not wait until the battle comes to become disciplined. Do not wait until pressure comes to learn obedience. Do not wait until conflict comes to discover whether God is truly at the center of your camp. The Haftarah adds another beautiful layer. Hosea says: “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, And bring her into the wilderness, And speak tenderly unto her.” Hosea 2:16, JPS The wilderness was not only where God trained an army. It is where He restored the heart of His people. Hosea also says: “And I will betroth thee unto Me for ever; Yea, I will betroth thee unto Me in righteousness, and in justice, And in lovingkindness, and in compassion. And I will betroth thee unto Me in faithfulness; And thou shalt know the LORD.” Hosea 2:21-22, JPS There is a beautiful Jewish tradition connected to these verses everytime I put on the Tefilin from my Bar Mitzvah I connect with this verse.. When many Jews put on tefillin and wrap the strap around the fingers, they recite these words from Hosea. The leather strap wrapped around the hand and finger becomes a daily reminder of covenant love, almost like the imagery of a wedding ring. The arm, the hand, the heart, and the mind are bound to God. This deepens the message of Bamidbar. God is not only building an army; He is binding a people to Himself. Israel is not being trained like mercenaries. Israel is being formed as a covenant people. The same God who says in Numbers, “all that are able to go forth to war,” also says in Hosea, “I will betroth thee unto Me for ever.” The preparation is not only military. It is spiritual, covenantal, and relational. Former slaves must learn how to fight, but they must also learn to Whom they belong. They must become an army, but they must also become a bride. They must be ready for battle, but their strength must come from faithfulness, righteousness, justice, lovingkindness, compassion, and covenant love. The New Testament continues this same theme. Paul writes: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11, ESV Armor is not something we put on after the attack begins. It is something we put on before the day of testing. Paul also tells Timothy: “Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 2:3, ESV A soldier must be trained before the battlefield. A disciple must be prepared before the trial. Peter gives us the identity behind the preparation: “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9, ESV This is the language of Bamidbar fulfilled in the life of God’s people. We are counted, called, set apart, and sent. So what was God doing in the wilderness? He took former slaves and taught them to think like free people. He took scattered families and formed them into tribes. He took tribes and arranged them into a camp. He took a camp and prepared it to become a nation. He took a nation and led it toward a land. The battle came later, but preparation came first. May we allow the Lord to remove the slave mindset from us. May He teach us to walk in freedom, discipline, unity, courage, and obedience. May our lives be ordered around His presence, so that when the day of testing comes, we are already prepared to stand. Shalom in Messiah, B. Yes I am sick with cancer that is true. The cancer is non-Hoskins Follicular cancer in the pancreas, lungs, stomach. It is a slow growing cancer. There are no treatments with drugs and only medical following with MRI’s and Gastroscopes, nuclear FDG Cat Scans. Joseph is working full time and writing, preaching, traveling internationally and sharing the preaching in Jerusalem sharing the pulpit with our young leader Yehuda who is also doing a fine work for Netivyah. Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep with religions they have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah
Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.
Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.
In Finland:
Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.
Keijo and Salme were in a car accident and Salme is recovering from a broken chest bone. Please keep them in your prayers for full recovery.

Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
Shirleyann - sounds great. I spoke with her and her coverage for extra medical supplies has come through. she still needs prayers for all the paperwork for her medicare and medicaid to complete. There was some follow through that was not done after staff told her it would be done.

Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
