우리는 대(對)이란 작전 “에픽 퓨어리” 5일째에 있습니다. 지금은 우리가 이스라엘의 파괴와 미국이 제공하고 옹호하는 자유의 파괴를 보고자 하는 자들의 능력을 소멸시키는 전투에 참여하고 있는 모든 이들의 보호를 위해 기도해야 하는 때입니다.

이번 주는 또한 우리에게 에스더에서 보이지 않아도 살아 계시며 나라들과 그 지도자들에게 방향을 지시하시며 이스라엘을 안전히 지키시는 하나님을 상기시킨 주이기도 합니다. 하나님께서는 졸지도 주무시지도 않으십니다. 시편 121편을 기억하십시오.

저는 이번 토라 시작 부분을 좋아합니다. 이 부분은 인구조사에 대해 말하고 있습니다. 이 때가 공식적으로 백성을 센 첫 번째입니다. 창세기 46:8-27로 되돌아가 보면, 이스라엘의 아들들의 이름이 총 70명 (혹은 70인역에서는 75명)인 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 미국에서도 이스라엘에서도 거의 10년마다 인구조사를 합니다. (여러분 중에 예전에 교회 벽 나무판에 검은 색 마분지 카드를 사용하여 찬송가 번호, 출석인원, 헌금액수 세 가지를 알려주던 것을 기억하십니까?)

이 본문을 특별하게 만드는 것은 백성을 셀 때 백성 가운데 질병이 없도록 생명의 속전을 내야 한다는 생각입니다. 이 생각은 이 속전을 동전으로 내야 한다는 것입니다. 이 때 사람이 아닌 동전을 세었는데, 군복무 연령의 남자가 몇 명인지를 세는 것입니다.

랍비 주석가 라시의 글을 찾아보면, 그는 제 할머니 도라와 증조할머니 마나가 자주 말씀하시던 오래된 전통이나 민간 속설, 즉 “악마의 눈”에 대해 언급합니다. 제 아버지가 아기였을 때 악마의 눈으로부터 보호하기 위해 귀를 뚫었던 것도 바로 이 때문이었습니다.

하지만 출애굽기에 나오는 이 경고를 성경의 다른 두 곳에서도 따랐더라면 효과가 있었을 것입니다.

우리가 처음 접하는 곳은 사무엘하 24장입니다. (24장 전체를 읽어보십시오. 몇 구절을 여기에 붙여 넣겠습니다.)

“그들 무리가 국내를 두루 돌아 아홉 달 스무 날 만에 예루살렘에 이르러

요압이 백성의 수를 왕께 보고하니 곧 이스라엘에서 칼을 빼는 담대한 자가 팔십만 명이요 유다 사람이 오십만 명이었더라

갓이 다윗에게 이르러 아뢰어 이르되 왕의 땅에 칠 년 기근이 있을 것이니이까 혹은 왕이 왕의 원수에게 쫓겨 석 달 동안 그들 앞에서 도망하실 것이니이까 혹은 왕의 땅에 사흘 동안 전염병이 있을 것이니이까 왕은 생각하여 보고 나를 보내신 이에게 무엇을 대답하게 하소서 하는지라” (사무엘하 24:8-13)

인구조사는 시간이 많이 걸립니다. 9개월 20일이나 걸렸습니다. 그러니 실용적인 방법으로 반 세겔씩 내는 것을 생각해 보십시오. 만약 내는 돈을 직접 내거나 인편으로 보낸다면, 여러분이 직접 사람들에게 찾아가는 것보다 세겔이 여러분에게 오는 방식이 더 효율적일 것입니다.

성전 세겔이 나오는 두 번째 곳은 신약성경 마태복음입니다.

“가버나움에 이르니 반 세겔 받는 자들이 베드로에게 나아와 이르되 너의 선생은 반 세겔을 내지 아니하느냐

이르되 내신다 하고 집에 들어가니 예수께서 먼저 이르시되 시몬아 네 생각은 어떠하냐 세상 임금들이 누구에게 관세와 국세를 받느냐 자기 아들에게냐 타인에게냐

베드로가 이르되 타인에게니이다 예수께서 이르시되 그렇다면 아들들은 세를 면하리라 그러나 우리가 그들이 실족하지 않게 하기 위하여 네가 바다에 가서 낚시를 던져 먼저 오르는 고기를 가져 입을 열면 돈 한 세겔을 얻을 것이니 가져다가 나와 너를 위하여 주라 하시니라” (마태복음 17:24-27)

예슈아께서는 자신과 베드로를 위해 성전세를 내셨습니다. 이는 예수님과 베드로가 자신들을 이스라엘 백성의 일원으로 여겼다는 것을 의미합니다. 그들은 성전에 갔고, 다른 사람들에게 불쾌감을 주지 않으려고 노력했습니다. 이는 우리가 인간관계에서 어떻게 행동해야 하는지에 대해 많은 것을 가르쳐 줄 수 있을 것입니다.

이스라엘의 특별한 점은 전국 곳곳에서 땅을 파거나 돌을 차보면 보물을 발견할 수 있다는 것입니다. 2026년 2월 27일에는 반 세겔 동전이 발견되기도 했습니다.

아래는 로마에 대한 제1차 유대인 반란 당시 발행된 반 세겔 동전의 그림입니다. 한쪽 면에는 오메르 잔과 “반 세겔”이라는 글자가, 다른 쪽 면에는 석류 세 개가 달린 나뭇가지와 “거룩한 예루살렘”이라는 글자가 새겨져 있습니다.

제가 어렸을 때 1리라 동전에는 이와 비슷한 세 개의 석류 문양이 새겨져 있었습니다.

덧붙여 말하자면, 석류는 제 어머니 마르시아가 가장 좋아하셨던 예술적 과일이자 이미지였습니다. 어머니는 석류 무늬가 있는 컵, 옷, 그림 등을 수집하셨었습니다.

카루브나무(Charuve Tree), 영어로는 캐롭(Carob)이라고 불리는 이 나무는 이스라엘에서 흔히 볼 수 있으며, 저는 어린 시절 동네와 마을 주변에서 이 나무를 많이 보았습니다. 카루브나무 열매는 크고 주름진 꼬투리인데, 너비는 손가락 두 개 정도이고 길이는 15~33cm 정도입니다. 우리는 긴 꼬투리를 따서 칼처럼 휘두르며 싸우곤 했습니다. 이 꼬투리를 깨면 새끼손톱만 한 검은 씨앗이 들어 있습니다. 성경에 나오는 게라는 성경에서 가장 작은 무게 단위인데, 은 1세겔은 20게라가 필요했습니다. 캐롭 씨앗의 무게는 1게라와 비슷합니다. 어떤 이들은 게라의 무게 단위가 캐롭 씨앗에서 유래되었다고 주장하기도 합니다.

성전세에 있어서는 모든 사람이 평등했습니다. 가난한 사람에게 너무 적거나 부자에게 너무 많지 않았다는 점이 정말 마음에 듭니다. “부자라고 반 세겔에서 더 내지 말고 가난한 자라고 덜 내지 말지며”

저는 이 동전의 가치를 가늠하고 싶었는데요, 1.5일치 임금과 맞먹는 것 같았습니다. 이 세금을 고려하면 일일 평균 소득을 계산할 수 있습니다.

The reading of the Torah on Shabbat, Ki-Tisa ("When You Elevate")

We are on the 5th day of Epic Fury. This is our time to pray for the protection of all those people who are joining the battle to diminish the ability of those with desires to see the destruction of Israel and the freedoms that America provides and stands for.

This week also reminds us of the God that is unseen in the book of Esther, who is still alive and directing the nations and their leaders to keep Israel safe. God does not fall asleep on his watch, remember Psalm 121.

"And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel, according to those that are numbered of them, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto Jehovah, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them. This they shall give, every one that passeth over unto them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary; (the shekel is twenty gerahs), half a shekel for an offering to Jehovah. Every one that passeth over unto them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the offering of Jehovah. The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half shekel, when they give the offering of Jehovah, to make atonement for your souls. And thou shalt take the atonement money from the children of Israel, and shalt appoint it for the service of the tent of meeting; that it may be a memorial for the children of Israel before Jehovah, to make atonement for your souls." (Exodus 30:11-16 ASV)

I love this opening. It talks about taking a census. This is the first time we have a formal count of the people. Back in Genesis 46:8-27, you can find the names of the sons of Israel totaled 70 (or 75 in the Septuagint text). Both in the USA and Israel, we take the census approximately every 10 years. ( Do you remember the old wooden boards on church walls where black cardboard cards with numbers were used to show three things: Song number, attendance, and contribution collected?)

What makes this passage special is the idea that when you count people, it is to pay a ransom for your soul so that there will be no plague among the people. The idea was that you collect these contributions as coins. You count the coins not the people, you have several men who were of army age.

If you look up the rabbinical commentator Rashi, he points to an old tradition or "wives' tale" that my grandmother Dora and great-grandmother Mana would talk about: the "evil eye." It was for this reason that when my father was a baby, his ear was pierced to protect him from the evil eye.

Things that are counted or numbered could be influenced or harmed by the evil eye. We don't live in a culture in the USA of the evil eye; however, some Mediterranean countries still have traditions that are tied to witchcraft and old wives' tales. You see these traditions in things that people carry or wear or have in the home, such as Blue Eyed Amulets (blue bead) or in Israel, the Hamsa, an open hand with five fingers - shaped in jewelry or an art piece.

Idolatry is all over this parasha and begins way before the golden calf. I think you can see that a blessing that God provides of protection can later on be twisted into a luck charm or habit that takes on more meaning than intended.

But this warning in the Exodus would have paid off if it were followed in two additional places in the bible.

The first place we encounter is 2 Samuel 24. (Read the whole chapter - I am going to paste some verses here)

"After they had gone through the entire land, they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king: In Israel there were eight hundred thousand able-bodied men who could handle a sword, and in Judah five hundred thousand.

David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men, and he said to the LORD, "I have sinned greatly in what I have done. Now, LORD, I beg you, take away the guilt of your servant. I have done a very foolish thing."

Before David got up the next morning, the word of the LORD had come to Gad the prophet, David’s seer: "Go and tell David, 'This is what the LORD says: I am giving you three options. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.'"

So Gad went to David and said to him, "Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land? Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you? Or three days of plague in your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should answer the one who sent me."" (2 Samuel 24:8-13 NIV11)

Taking the census is time-consuming. Nine months and twenty days. So consider the practical method of half a shekel payment. If the payments are dropped off, or sent in, you have the shekels making their way to you, vs you making your way to them (people).

The idea that there was a Temple Shekel is also important because it tells us that there was a standard, or in more modern terms, a Mint that was created for such coins. When considering the Israelites fleeing Egypt, we might have the wrong idea of what that looked like. These people were set up where an organized military of some sort was established. That was counting men over 20, and eligibility was needed. A mint of coinage (or silver) implies self-governing, jobs, commerce, trading, trades, and skills. Imports and exports, and tradesmen and women with skills, were used to create all that we read about in Exodus.

The Second place we can find the Temple Shekel is in the Book of Matthew of the Second Covenant.

"After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, 'Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?"

"Yes, he does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?"

"From others," Peter answered. "Then the children are exempt," Jesus said to him. "But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours."" (Matthew 17:24-27 NIV11)

Yeshua pays the temple tax for himself and for Peter. This means that Jesus and Peter considered themselves part of the people of Israel. They went to the Temple. They were concerned about not offending. This is something many of us could learn from regarding how we deal with humanity.

The money changers around the Temple were not only for making purchases in the local currency but also for getting a silver half shekel for your temple taxes. When we consider that this was for the Mishkan, the Tabernacle in Exodus, and later for the Temple, it is clear that Tax, Tithes, and Offerings all differ in the Bible, and we lump them all as contributions today.

What is so special about Israel is that you can find treasure all over the country when you dig or kick over rocks. On February 27, 2026, a half shekel coin was discovered.

Below is a graphic depiction of a half shekel coin from the first Jewish Revolt against Rome. One side has an Omer cup and "Half Shekel," and the other side a branch with three pomegranates and "Holy Jerusalem."

When I was a kid, the 1 Lira coin had similar motifs to the three pomegranates.

Also, an aside about the pomegranates. This was my mother, Marcia's, favorite artistic fruit and image. She collected patterns with pomegranates on them—cups, clothing, pictures, etc.

The Charuve Tree, or Carob in English, is a tree that is common in Israel, and I saw it most of my childhood around the neighborhood and town. It has a Pod, think of a big wrinkled pod that is approximately two fingers wide and 6 to 13 inches long. The longer ones we would pick off the tree and use as swords to fight with. These pods, when cracked open, have black seeds that are the size of a pinky nail on your hand. The biblical Gera weight is the smallest in the Bible; it takes 20 geras for one shekel of silver. The Carob seed is similar in weight to a Gera. Some claim the Gera weight was derived from the Carob Seed.

When it came to the temple tax, all men were equal. I love the fact that the fee was not considered too poor for the poor or too rich for the rich. "The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half shekel."

I wanted to get a perspective on this coin and its value, and it appears it equals the pay for 1.5 days of work. Placing this tax in perspective, you can calculate your average daily earnings.

Benjamin Franklin said, "In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes."

The temple tax that started as being collected when a census was done evolved to an annual tax by the time Yeshua and Peter paid it. Old Ben is right! Nothing changes; we still see our taxes grow every year.

Continue to keep this world in your prayers. Israel's victories will help keep radicalization from targeting your countries as the prime targets. However you should be praying for your countries and the expansion of the Gospel in them.

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 new Danah : Her flights out of Israel are canceled. Pray for a safe flight to open up for her.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who is in her 90s with a home care taker.

 Judy is near 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

 Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

 Keijo and Salme are doing well. Both Keijo and Salme need your prayers for their health issues.

 Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see there children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.

In Denmark:

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 new Shirleyann - was in the hospital this week for internal bleeding. Low BP, Low Sugar. She is back home today recovering. She is a tough bird at 91. Please keep her in your prayers and blessings.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
