배리 슐람 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 테짜베(“너는 명령하라”)입니다. 토라 출애굽기 27:20–30:10 하프타라 에스겔 43:10-27 신약성경 디도서 1:5-2:15 우리가 성경을 읽을 때 대체로 우리가 연관 지을 수 없는 것들은 건너뜁니다. 저는 제 할머니 집과 베쓰의 부모님 집에 기름 등이 있는 것을 기억합니다. 미국 테네시주 내슈빌에는 얼마 전 대단한 눈 폭풍이 있어 어떤 지역에서는 사람들이 열흘 동안 전기도 없이 생활했습니다. 저는 사람들이 집을 덥히고 밝히기 위해 초, 기름 등, 가스 스토브로 되돌아간 것을 압니다. 20 너는 또 이스라엘 자손에게 명령하여 감람으로 짠 순수한 기름을 등불을 위하여 네게로 가져오게 하고 끊이지 않게 등불을 켜되 21 아론과 그의 아들들로 회막 안 증거궤 앞 휘장 밖에서 저녁부터 아침까지 항상 여호와 앞에 그 등불을 보살피게 하라 이는 이스라엘 자손이 대대로 지킬 규례이니라 출애굽기 27:20-21 우리는 제사장이 아닌 일반 백성 이스라엘 사람들이 성막 기능에 필수적인 역할을 했다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 저는 어렸을 적에 갈릴리에 갔던 기억이 납니다. 바닷가에는 가버나움(히브리어로는 크파르 나훔)이라는 어촌이 있습니다. 베드로, 안드레, 야고보, 요한 모두 그곳에서 살며 일했습니다. 이곳은 예슈아께서 중풍병자를 고치신 곳이기도 합니다. 크파르 나훔에는 1세기 회당이 있습니다. 돌들은 모두 검은색인데, 현무암이라고 합니다. 현무암은 화산암의 일종으로 표면이 거칩니다. 회당 근처에는 특별한 두 장소가 있습니다. 하나는 어부 베드로의 집이고, 다른 하나는 올리브를 찧는 데 사용했던 현무암 맷돌입니다. 이 맷돌에는 바퀴를 꿰는 나무 막대가 있었고, 당나귀가 그 막대에 묶여 원을 그리며 돌면 맷돌이 돌아가면서 올리브를 찧었습니다. 그 다음 단계는 엮은 바구니에 찧은 올리브를 모아 담는 것이었습니다. 팬케이크를 쌓아 놓은 것처럼 이 바구니들을 쌓아 그 위에 무거운 돌을 놓아 눌렀습니다. 그러면 기름이 짜내져 통 안으로 흘러내려 모였습니다. 제 부모님은 마당에 올리브 나무 한 그루를 키우셨는데, 여러 해 동안 올리브를 따서 올리브를 수확하여 올리브유를 만드는 북쪽에 있는 팔레스타인 가족에게 가져다주시곤 하셨습니다. 평균적으로 한 해에 한 그루의 나무에서 6~8병 정도의 올리브유를 가져오셨는데, 그 양은 1년 내내 요리하고 먹는 데에 쓰였습니다.

그래서 우리는 일반 백성이 저녁부터 아침까지 성막의 등불을 계속 밝히는 일에 참여할 수 있는 특권을 누렸다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 저는 손전등을 정말 좋아합니다. 밖에 나가서 손전등이 얼마나 밝은지, 얼마나 멀리까지 비추는지 확인하는 것을 좋아합니다. 엘이디(LED) 손전등은 예전 백열전구 손전등보다 훨씬 좋습니다. 손전등은 어두운 곳에서만 테스트할 수 있다는 점에 유의하시기 바랍니다. 낮에 밖에서 불을 켜둘 필요가 없습니다. 우리가 밖에 앉아 있을 때 촛불을 켜놓지 않습니다. 기름을 만드는 데에도 많은 수고가 필요했는데요, 올리브를 따고, 추출하고, 보관하는 과정에 말입니다. 이 모든 것은 살아있는 식물에서 나오며, 올리브 나무는 열매를 맺는 계절이 있습니다. 따라서 음식, 요리, 성유, 조명에 사용되는 올리브 기름은 귀중한 물품입니다. 그런데 하나님께서는 밤에 빛이 필요하지 않으십니다. 하나님께서 말씀으로 창조하신 첫 번째 것이 바로 빛이었습니다. 그분은 인류를 위해 그것을 창조하시고, 그것을 기준으로 저녁과 아침이라고 부르셨습니다. 그것은 우리에게 하루를 측정하는 기준이 되었고, 다시 일주일을 측정하는 기준이 되었습니다. 빛이라는 하나의 단순한 것이 그토록 많은 것들을 존재하게 만들었습니다. 제사장들에게 기름을 가져다주어 누군가는 밤에 어둠 속에서 불을 지키는 일을 하게 되었습니다. 이렇게 짧은 시간에 빛을 만들어낸 일은 이제 대대로 이어지는 의식의 일부가 되었고, 하나님께서 계신 곳에 빛을 비추는 동역 관계가 되었습니다. 이번 파라샤(토라 포션)의 끝부분 29장에 이 구절이 있습니다. 45 내가 이스라엘 자손 중에 거하여 그들의 하나님이 되리니 46 그들은 내가 그들의 하나님 여호와로서 그들 중에 거하려고 그들을 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 줄을 알리라 나는 그들의 하나님 여호와니라 출애굽기 29:45-46 저는 여기서 하나님께서 이스라엘 백성을 속박에서(어둠에서) 구원하시는 조건을 볼 수 있다고 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 우리 모두는 우리의 삶이나 직장, 가정생활에서 너무나 암울하고 견디기 힘든 상황에 처해 본 경험이 있을 것입니다. 그러나 우리가 그 어둠에서 해방되었을 때는, 이제 우리가 빛이 되도록 부름 받은 것입니다. 사실, 이 장은 우리가 하나님께 빛을 비추도록 부름 받았다는 이야기로 시작됩니다. 어둠 속에서 다른 사람들이 여러분의 삶에서 빛을 볼 수 있도록 빛이 되라고 부름 받은 것입니다. 여러분은 피난처와, 구원의 길로 인도하는 등대와 같은 존재가 되어야 합니다. 첫 부분의 이 말씀은 오늘날에도 잊히지 않았습니다. 우리는 더 이상 올리브를 따고 짜서 기름을 얻을 필요가 없습니다. 스위치를 켜거나 알렉사에게 집안의 조명을 켜달라고 말하기만 하면 됩니다. 하지만 저는 여러분에게 회당에서 이 구절들, 즉 성궤(아론 하코데쉬) 앞이나 위에 영구하고 지속적으로 켜놓는 네에르 타미드(등불)를 현대 방식보다 더 효과적으로 구현하는 방법을 찾을 수 있는지 도전하겠습니다. 미국 내셔널 퍼블릭 라디오(NPR)의 진행자이자 독특한 목소리를 가진 톰 보뎃은 모텔 6 광고에서 “저희는 당신을 위해 불을 켜두겠습니다”라는 명대사를 남겼습니다. 그러니, 여러분도 빛이 되십시오! 특히 지금처럼 어두운 시대에 스스로를 밝히기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 바로 이 곳, 이 때가 빛이 인간 세상의 어두운 곳을 변화시킬 수 있는 지점입니다. 그러나 너희는 택하신 족속이요 왕 같은 제사장들이요 거룩한 나라요 그의 소유가 된 백성이니 이는 너희를 어두운 데서 불러 내어 그의 기이한 빛에 들어가게 하신 이의 아름다운 덕을 선포하게 하려 하심이라 베드로전서 2:9 하나님께서 여러분 모두에게 복 주시기를 축원합니다.

by Barry Shulam The reading of the Torah on Shabbat, Tetzaveh (“You Shall Command”) Torah Exodus 27:20–30:10 Haftarah Ezekiel 43:10-27. New Testament Titus 1:5-2:15. Most of the time when we read the Bible, we skip over things that we can’t relate to. I remember my grandmothers’ house and Beth’s parents house have oil lamps. We just had a big ice storm in Nashville and people were without electricity for 10 days in some areas. I know that people went back to candles, oil lamps, gas stoves to heat and light the homes. 20 “You shall further command the Israelites to bring you pure oil of beaten olives for the light, so that a lamp may be set up to burn continually. 21 In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that is before the covenant, Aaron and his sons shall tend it from evening to morning before the Lord. It shall be a perpetual ordinance to be observed throughout their generations by the Israelites. NRSV EX 27-20:21 We see that people ( the Israelites the common folk who are not priestly ) have an essential part in the tabernacle function. I remember as child we visited the Galilee. On the sea there is a fishing village named Capernaum or in Hebrew (Kfar Nahum). Peter, Andrew, James and John all lived and worked there. This is the location where Yeshua heals the paralytic. So this Kefar Nahum is where a 1st century synagogue stands. The stones are all black and they are called Basalt - this is a volcanic rock and is rough. Near the synagogue you will find two places that are special. One is the house of Peter the fisherman. The second is a Basalt rock mill stone for crushing the olives. The mill had a wooden rod that went through the wheel and a donkey was tied to it as he walked in circles the stone turned and crushed the olives. The second phase was to collect the crushed olives and place them in woven baskets. These stacked baskets (think of a stack of pancakes) were pressed by heavy stones that were set on them. The oil would squeeze out run down in the vat and collect. Mom and dad have an olive three in the yard and some years they would take their olives up north bo to a Palestinian family that harvested olives and make olive oil. On an average year they would come back home with 6 - 8 bottles of olive oil from one tree in the yard. They would use that much in a year just with cooking and eating. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PikiWiki_Israel_15483_An_olive_press_in_Capernaum.JPG So we see that the average person had the privilege to participate in keeping the lamp burning in the tabernacle that is permanently lit from evening to morning. Now, I love flashlights. I love going outside and seeing how bright my flashlight is, how far it can shine down the road and L.E.D. flashlights are much better than the old filament ones. Please notice the flashlights can only be tested in the dark. There is no purpose of having a light lit outside in the day time. We don’t go around lighting candles when we sit outside. The effort to make the oil took great effort of picking, making oil and storing it. All this is from a living plant and the tree has seasons for making olives. So the oil which is used for food, cooking, anointing and lighting is a precious commodity. However, God does not need the light at night time. The first thing God spoke into existence was light. He created that for humanity. He called it evening and morning. It became the measurement of days for us. Which became the measurements of a week. The one simple thing of light brought so many things into existence. By bringing the oil to the priests it gave someone a job at night time to tend the light during the darkness. This creation of light for a short period by the people now became part of the generational ordinances, it became a partnership between shining light on where God is present. Near the end of the Parasha we have this text from chapter 29. 45 I will dwell among the Israelites, and I will be their God. 46 And they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt that I might dwell among them; I am the Lord their God NRSV EX 29-45:46 I would say that we see a condition here of God taking Israel out of bondage ( I would say out of darkness ). We all can relate to being in a situation in our lives, work, or family where it might seem it’s so dark, it is so difficult and hard to bear. However when we are freed from that darkness , we now are called to be the light. In fact, this chapter begins with our being called to shine a light on God. To be that light where when it’s dark, others can see that light in your life. You are that beacon like a light house to a refuge, to a way of life that is saving. These beginning verses have not been forgotten today. We might not have to pick and press olives to have oil. We just switch a light on or talk to Alexa to turn on the lights in our home. But I challenge you to be more effective than the modern day implementation of these verses in the synagogue : the (permanent, constant) Ne’er Tamid lit in front or above the Holy Ark (Aron HaKodesh).. Tom Bodett an NPR personality (it’s a voice that is unique) in a commercial for Motel 6 speaks an iconic tag line “We’ll leave the light on for you”. SO - BE THE LIGHT!, you must make an effort to light yourself especially in the dark times we are in. This is where the light makes a difference in the shady places of humanity. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,[a] in order that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. The Prayer List
Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
In Jerusalem:
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who is in her 90s with a home care taker.
Judy is near 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.
In the U.K.:
Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.
In Finland:
Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.
Keijo and Salme are doing well. Both Keijo and Salme need your prayers for their health issues.

Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see there children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.
In Denmark:
Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.
Ray H. is having a similar health issue like Marcia Shulam did where id blood pressure drops when we stands up.
Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
Jenny has a praise report. had her procedures last week and is back to normal functions. she has no limitations and is able to drive and be a blessings to others. Praise God.
Shirleyann - had a wonderful visit with her doctors and she is doing splendid. This weekend she is going to see Jordan. please pray for this visit to be a blessing for Jordan and his faith.
Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)
Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.
Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.
Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.
Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.
Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.
Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
