by Joseph Shulam The reading of the Torah on Shabbat, Mishpatim (“Laws”) Torah Exodus 21:1-24:18, 30:11-16 Prophets II Kings 12:1-17 New Testament Matt 17:1–9 The first words of this portion from Exodus chapter 21 are: "Now these are the rules/laws that you shall set before them." These are the readings that will be read in all the Jewish synagogues around the world. Please remember that the Gentiles were commanded by the apostles, including the Apostle Paul, in the Jerusalem council that is recorded in Acts 15. The decisions and rulings of the Apostles and the elders of the church in Jerusalem were for all the non-Jews that have received Yeshua as their Messiah in all the diaspora that was reached by the Apostle Paul and his disciples. In Acts 15:19-21, the last ruling of the council was that all need to go to the synagogue on the Sabbath and hear the word of God (The Torah) read. Of course, the reason for this was the fact that not everyone for sure and not even every synagogue had the whole Hebrew Bible available. Most of the Synagogues had at least the five books of Moses in a handwritten manuscript written on leather by hand. We, in our congregation and in all the congregations that the Lord has used me to start around the world, have proper Torah Scrolls that are used every Shabbat, and they all read from the handwritten scrolls that Netivyah has provided for each of these congregations, in Brazil, 4 congregations. The command in the book of Acts is to all the Gentile congregations that the Apostles, especially Paul, established in Asia Minor (that is, Turkey of today) and in Greece. The verses state: "I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles." This passage underscores the objective of the servant: to bring light and guidance not only to Israel but to all nations. Another important reference is found in Isaiah 49:6, which reiterates God's intention for His people: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. This verse expands the mission from Israel alone to include the Gentiles, portraying the message of salvation as universal. In the New Testament, this theme is beautifully encapsulated in Matthew 4:16, which quotes Isaiah, saying: "The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned." Here, Jesus is identified as that light, reflecting His role in bringing salvation not just to the Jews but to everyone. This illustrates the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy concerning the nations. Additionally, Acts 13:47 captures Paul's declaration of the mission to the Gentiles: "For this is what the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'" This reinforces the apostolic mission, emphasizing that the message of Christ is intended for all nations and is a continuation of the prophetic vision set in the Old Testament. Another relevant text is John 8:12, where Jesus declares: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life." In this self-identification, Jesus not only confirms His nature as divine truth but also indicates that His light is available to all, transcending ethnic and national boundaries. Lastly, Revelation 21:24 provides a picture of the final fulfillment of God's plan, describing the New Jerusalem: "The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it." This eschatological vision confirms that in the kingdom of God, light will guide the nations, illustrating God's ultimate purpose of drawing all peoples to Himself through the light of Christ. The interplay of "light" and references to "Gentiles" or "nations" throughout the Bible reveals a profound theological truth about God's redemptive plan. From the prophetic messages of the Old Testament to the proclamations of the New Testament church, the command to be a light to the nations is a vital theme, embodying hope for all of humanity. The source and means by which these commands and promises in God's Word for the Gentiles are clear and repeated several times from the Torah itself to the book of Revelation in the last scenes of history before the establishment of the new heaven and the new earth that Isaiah the prophet predicted already in the 8th Century B.C. The importance of this command made by the apostles in the Jerusalem council that is recorded in the book of Acts chapter 15 is beyond measure. Because how could these faithful Gentiles who heard the Good News (The Gospels) grow in their faith without knowing the foundation of our faith as disciples of Yeshua the Messiah, without knowing the basic requirements that God has given to Israel to share with the rest of the world that lived in the darkness of idolatry and witchcraft? The Torah given to Moses and the children of Israel from God's personal encounter for 40 days and nights on top of Mount Sinai was the essence and summary of all the divine principles that God designed for all of humanity, not only for Israel and the Jewish nation. The calling and mission of all Israel was described in many ways in the Bible, starting from the book of Genesis all the way to the book of Revelation. There are commands that were given to Israel and the world that were all based on the revelation of God to Israel from Mount Sinai. The Ten Commandments are just the very beginning and essence of God's revelation for His children to live a holy and beneficial life for themselves and society in Israel and for all the other nations. The command of God to Israel and the job description for Israel given more than one time in the Bible and I can summarize it and squeeze it in a command that is repeated twice in the writing of Isaiah the Prophet of God! Here is the job description of God's purpose and task of the nation of Israel in relationship to the pagan idol worshiping nations of the world. Here are the texts in the Bible that command and describe the function of Israel (The Jewish Nation in relationship to the nations of the world). The Torah (The Law of Moses) is foundational and the ten commandments are essential and the Basis of God's requirements of all of humanity in order to have a moral and true good life of love and cooperation between the human race exemplifying the very character of God and Yeshua as the light and truth that will make us all live and act and function as the children of our father in heaven God the Father and his spirit and His divine SON of God. God designed us in His own image and the image of the one that He spoke to in the process of creation in Genesis 1:26: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. 27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." We must remember that there were no Gentiles or Jews in the creation story. There was just God, His Son, and Adam and Eve. God's commands are for all of humanity, not only for one nation. The Light of God, as it is brought above in this prayer list, is for all humanity, and when humanity will take God's commands seriously, the world that we live in will be a much better world. Peace will be the very paradigm that will share love and hope eternal for all those who walk on two legs in this world. (I don't mind having our cousins from the jungles that walk on two legs to also join us humans). There are some things that we humans can learn from them. I feel sad that my Christian brothers and sisters have been accustomed to ignoring the old testament in general but more specific the Five books of Moses (The Torah = the Law as it is called in Christian circles). Please don't forget to read Acts chapter 15: 16-21. And remember that these were not temporary commandments but permanent requirements of the apostles, including Paul, for all the disciples of Yeshua the Messiah, including those from among the nations (The non-Jewish followers of Yeshua who were born-again!) Please read Ephesians chapter 2: 1-12 and see where the Apostle Paul is placing the non-Jewish disciples of Yeshua that He had brought into the kingdom of God! Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)

Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
