by Joseph Shulam The reading of the Torah on Shabbat, Jethro is called in Hebrew Yitro! Torah Exodus 18:1-20:23 Prophets Isaiah 6:1-7:6, 9:5-6 New Testament Matthew 19:16-26 We will be reading on this shabbat from a portion of the Torah named after a non Israelite – non-Jewish Pagan priest, the father-in-law of Moses. The uniqueness of this Torah portion is so very special and so very important that I actually fear to write about this Torah portion and express my joy and pleasure to be able to address these issues in this prayer list that I have been writing since the middle of the 1970s after the death of Emanuel Moshe Ben Maier. Emanuel Moshe Ben Maier was a cofounder of the Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry since 1972. We were six Jewish adults who decided that being a part of a community that its leaders don’t respect others or someone that differs from their religious framework and treat each other as enemies because of some strange religious virus that seems to exist in most religious groups that is the feeling and opinion that we are the pure and exclusive faithful children of God. Well, our Torah portion is something that I always rejoice to read and write and teach. So, my dear brothers and sisters please read our Torah portion that is named after a pagan non-Jewish Midianite priest, the father-in-law of Moses! We will be reading from the Torah from Exodus 18:1-20:23, and from the prophets we will read Isaiah 6:1-7:6 + 9:5-6, and from the New Testament we will read from Matthew 19:16-26. I will drive into these readings with deep pleasure and a challenge. As I wrote above, religions seem to want to be exclusive and gather their flock under a canopy that embraces its members and participants under the same umbrella holding them tight by the excuse of exclusivity. This religious virus seems to be between religions and also at times like in modern Judaism inside the religion. I will use modern Judaism as an example: We are Jews a small nation, in fact one of the smallest nations on God’s good earth. But please don’t look at us as one united and unique unified nation. There are in the world many kinds of Jews. There are Jews that even in the summer wear big black or dark brown fur hats made from a furry mink skin that could easily cost like a mink coat. And even there among the ultra-orthodox jews there are differences that a Jewish boy from one sect would not be easily permitted to marry the daughter of another ultra-orthodox Hassidic sect. Hasidic Judaism, a prominent faction within the ultra-Orthodox movement, itself encompasses numerous sects, such as Chabad-Lubavitch, Satmar, and Pâtechik, among others. Each of these groups is often distinguished by its rebbes (spiritual leaders), unique customs, and varying degrees of adherence to particular interpretations of Jewish law. Some of the well-known Hasidic sects are known for their vibrant communal life, rich traditions, and, in many instances, their strong opposition to modernity, which they view as a threat to Jewish identity. For instance, members of a sect like Satmar may view marriage to an individual from the Chabad community—despite both being part of the ultra-Orthodox community—as undesirable due to differing religious practices, customs, and social philosophies. Satmar's opposition to Zionism starkly contrasts with Chabad's outreach strategies and moderate stance toward the State of Israel, which creates additional layers of separation between the two communities. Marriages between sects are often regarded not merely as personal decisions but as matters that impact the continuity and spiritual integrity of the community as a whole. This coming Shabbat the whole Jewish religious community around the world will be reading from the Torah the section called Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses himself. Here is how the Torah itself introduces Jethro: Exodus 18:1 And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel His people—that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back, 3 with her two sons, of whom the name of one was Gershom (for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land”) 4 and the name of the other was Eliezer (for he said, “The God of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh”); 5 and Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of God. 6 Now he had said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.” Exodus 18:7 So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, bowed down, and kissed him. And they asked each other about their well-being, and they went into the tent. 8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how the LORD had delivered them. 9 Then Jethro rejoiced for all the good which the LORD had done for Israel, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.” 12Then Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and other sacrifices to offer to God. And Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. What do we see in this text from the book of Exodus? We see three things that are so rare and so important for all of us. There is no bigger divide between humans than religion. wars in the history of mankind have been prompted and motivated by religious motives. Antisemitism the misunderstood unjustified hate of Jews is not based on the skin color or the customs of the Jews, but on their religious convictions and follower of the Torah. Religion is without a doubt the biggest motive that produces hate and exclusivity and for both Jews and Christians it is based on the desire to be the exclusive people of God! So, here on this Shabbat all around the world in every Jewish synagogue the reading from the Torah starts with the father-in-law of Moses who is directly called “A priest of Midian.” Just to remind us that Midian was one of the big enemies of Israel for many centuries. Bang! This shabbat our reading of the Torah starts by introducing us to the father-in-law of Moses Jethro, a priest of Midian. For me this Torah portion is so very significant. It teaches me that God is truly no respecter of persons. All mankind are God’s children, black and yellow, red and white, we are all children of Adam and Eve. We are all created in the image of God. We all belong to the mammal kingdom on this earth’s nature. And I am not talking only of us mankind. God has stamped his signature on all the mammal kingdom, lions and Elephants and Baboons and mice, and chipmunks and rats and the deer’s and dogs and cats are all stamped with the signature of Adam and Eve. We all have two eyes and one mouth (praise the Lord) and two limbs’ hands and legs and a heart that pumps our blood and our reproductive system is nearly the same. God has created us and a big part of the animal world and stamped us with His seal and shared with us humans the very essence of life that is faith-based relationship between Him and Us, between the “I and you!” We the humans that live on God’s planet the earth has most of the history of mankind ignored the fact that we are all children of God and invented straight from the pits of hell racial prejudice and reasons to hate and separate and harm each other for no good reason at all. And here comes the Torah on this Shabbat and every year just before Purim and Passover when we read this Torah portion named after a pagan priest, the father-in-law of Moses, Jethro. And we read the following in this Torah portion: 1. Jethro accepts Moses as his son-in-law and welcomes him and his daughter and their two sons. Jethro gives Moses a job, as a shepherd of his flocks. 2. Jethro teaches Moses some important principles of leadership, how to delegate tasks and involve others in the leadership so that the top leader shares authority and saves himself from over working and having time and opportunity to take care of himself and his family. Dear brothers and sisters, this text is so rich and so important for all of us these days that I feel the need to draw the conclusions that are some of the most important elements for all of us. There is no room for racial or religious prejudice among mankind. We are all created in the image of God and Yeshua. God decided in the Genesis the following: “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So, God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28 NKJV) Selma To Montgomery March There is one picture from history that makes me very proud to be a Jew! The front line there are Dr. Martin Luther King and his wife, and other of the Negro leadership and next to Dr. Martin Luther King stands Rabbi Joshua Hechel and in the second and third line is the Jewish Singer Pete Siger and also Bob Dylan is in the same crowed. Our Torah portion in the book of Exodus chapter 18, before the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai demonstrates that God is the God of all mankind and we are all the children of the Almighty God the creator of the heavens and the earth. It demonstrates that even before the giving of the Torah to Israel God was and is and will forever be our father and creator. All of Racism and racial prejudice and especially antisemitism is not from God and the God of Moses and Israel is also the God of Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law the priest of Midian. The Jews were active in the fight for racial equality, and the torah portion Yitro is a clear Demostración of the way God looks at non-jews who have a relationship with the Jews and Israel. The Selma march of 1965, formally known as the Selma to Montgomery marches, stands as a pivotal moment in the American civil rights movement. It not only highlighted the struggle for African American voting rights but also illustrated the solidarity across various communities in the fight against racial injustice. Among the diverse group of activists were leaders from the African American community, as well as an array of Jewish leaders and public figures who stood shoulder to shoulder with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. According to historical records, many prominent Jewish artists and activists participated in these marches, underscoring the relationship between the Jewish community and the broader civil rights movement. One of the notable Jewish figures associated with the Selma marches was Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, who marched alongside Dr. King. Heschel, a renowned rabbi and theologian, emphasized the moral imperative to fight against injustice and recognized the shared struggle between African Americans and Jewish people based on their own historical experiences with persecution. His presence at Selma was emblematic of this solidarity, demonstrating the moral alliance between the civil rights movement and the Jewish community. As for artists, while Bob Dylan is often associated with the broader cultural landscape of the 1960s and the protest movements of that era, documentation does not directly connect him with the Selma marches specifically. However, he was indeed a vocal supporter of civil rights and performed songs that became anthems of the movement. His song "The Times They Are a-Changin'" resonated deeply during this period, capturing the essence of the call for change. Dylan's music provided a soundtrack to the movements for social justice, earning him a significant place in the cultural zeitgeist of the time. In contrast, folk singer Pete Seeger was present at the Selma marches. Known for his commitment to social justice causes, Seeger's participation alongside Dr. King is well-documented. He played a crucial role in the folk music revival and was a significant figure in advocating for civil rights throughout the 1960s. His rendition of "We Shall Overcome," a protest anthem, became synonymous with the civil rights movement and its ethos of hope and perseverance. The participation of these artists and Jewish leaders highlights the intersection of varied social movements during the 1960s. This alliance was rooted in shared experiences of oppression and a commitment to fighting for equality and justice. Notably, the involvement of Jewish individuals in the Selma marches was part of a broader trend; Jewish Americans, having experienced their own history of marginalization, were particularly sensitive to the struggles of African Americans. This commonality fostered mutual support during moments of societal upheaval. Moreover, the Selma marches and the activism of Jewish leaders generated significant attention about the civil rights movement within Jewish communities. Many Jewish Americans viewed their participation as a moral obligation, taking inspiration from the teachings of their faith, which emphasize justice and the pursuit of righteousness. Organizations such as the Jewish Labor Committee and the American Jewish Congress played supportive roles during the Selma to Montgomery marches, highlighting this cross-communal effort for civil rights. The Selma marches culminated in a 54-mile trek from Selma, Alabama, to the Alabama state capital of Montgomery. This demonstration aimed to protest systemic injustices, including the blatant disenfranchisement of African American voters. The psychological and political impact of these events went far beyond Alabama; they galvanized national attention and ultimately contributed to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The significance of the Selma marches was not just in the number of participants but in their symbolic meaning. Diverse communities coming together to march for civil rights created a powerful statement to the nation about the necessity for social justice. The visibility of Jewish leaders and artists amid the predominantly African American participants effectively sent a message of solidarity and highlighted the pursuit of equality as a universal struggle that transcended racial and ethnic boundaries. It is important to acknowledge that the relationship between the African American and Jewish communities has been complex, marked by cooperation and, at times, tension. However, during the Selma marches, there was a clear focus on unity against a common enemy: systemic racism. The partnership exemplified the power of collective action and was instrumental in fostering dialogue and understanding between these communities. The Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965 not only underscored the urgent need for voting rights for African Americans but also symbolized the broader coalition of civil rights activists. Jewish leaders and figures, including Rabbi Heschel and Pete Seeger, represented a faithful and committed alliance with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the African American community. Although artists like Bob Dylan were not directly present at the Selma marches, his music resonated deeply within the movement. Ultimately, this confluence of various leaders and activists in Selma showed that the fight for civil rights was not just a black or white issue—it was a human one, calling all people to stand together against injustice. Our reading in the same chapter 18 of the book of Genesis also teaches us that we have much to learn from Jethro about administration and organization and hospitality and generosity from those human brothers who are not of the same color and not of the same culture and not of the same religion. Yes, it is possible to be an idol worshiper and not to know the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob (Israel) and be a human being and a child of God! Yes, you can be ignorant of the God who created this world, yes! You can be ignorant of the salvation that the God of Israel and our father in heaven has given to all mankind by Yeshua His son available for all mankind. What you can’t be is an antisemite, racist, prejudice filled hater of humanity. God didn’t create such an animal that hates his own kind just because of the color of the man’s skin, or the name of the temple or church that the man attends. This kind of hate, racism, is a denial that ONE GOD is the father of all mankind and all of creation that lives on the face of this blue ball that we call Earth! Our Torah portion is right before Moses sees the burning bush and God appoints him the man with a stutter and a wooden shepherd’s stick in his hand who leads Israel out of Egyptian slavery and takes them across the Sinai desert for 40 years boot camp to the Land of Israel. I am sure happy and glad that this Torah portion is in the bible. I am sure glad that it is actually before Moses goes up Mount Sinai and receives the Torah. I am sure happy that before we get the Torah the Holy Spirit gave us the story of Jethro and his kindness to Moses and gives his daughter Zippora to Moses as his wife. Please dear brothers and sisters stand with us and support what we are doing both in Netivyah Israel and in Netivyah International in the USA. We and Israel and the Christian world need what Netivyah is doing around the world and also in Israel. God has used us to plant Jewish Congregations and ministries literally around the world, Brazil, Bulgaria, Finland, and have brotherly relationship with brothers in Japan, China, Korea, Australia, and have dear brothers and sisters who are Palestinian Arabs, and teach in far largely Muslim countries like Indonesia, and in Africa…. We need all together to fight racism and especially antisemitism because of someone hates Jews or any other race He hates God himself because God is the God of all mankind, but he also hates Yeshua (Jesus) because He is the King of the Jews. Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
In Jerusalem:
new Joseph Shulam & Hannah Kovner are getting married next month Feb 24th. Keep them in your prayers.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.
In Finland:
Mauno Lemponen health has not changed which is a good thing. they are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.
Keijo and Salme are doing well. Both Keijo and Salme need your prayers for their health issues.

In Denmark:
Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

new We have been iced in with half an inch of ice covering everyone and everything in Tennessee. Pray for our friends and family who have been without electricity with a week of temperatures below freezing.

Cindy - has been fighting spiritual battles at work for many years and is asking for God to open a door for her if it His will for her to move on.
I ask for prayers for divine intervention in the lives of my sister-in-law “A” and her husband, my brother, “G” and their son. l am begging the Eternal for healing and salvation for this family.
Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.
Ray H. is having a similar health issue like Marcia Shulam did where id blood pressure drops when we stands up.
Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
Jenny has a praise report. She is going to be able to continue to drive her car. in the next couple of weeks she will have a procedure that will provide her doctors with a way to monitor her health remotely. She does so much for those that need someone to take them to doctors offices or need groceries shopping.
Shirleyann - I spoke with her today and she didnot mention recovering from her fall. she was full speed on prayers for others and encouragement. I take that a sign she is on the mend. Her doctors visit has good news and we are thankful. Praise God for small miracles.
Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)
Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.
Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.
Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.
Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.
Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.
Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
