우리는 이번 안식일에 토라에서 가장 극적인 본문 중 하나를 읽습니다. 토라 포션 “바에라”는 3절의 “(그리고) 내가 나타났다”라는 뜻입니다! 이 히브리 단어는 다른 언어로는 번역하기 힘든 단어입니다. 뉴킹제임스버전 같이 일부 번역본은 이 히브리 단어 “바에라”를 “내가 나타났다”로 번역했습니다. 다비 영어번역본은 히브리어의 이 단어를 “하나님께서 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱에게 전능하신 하나님으로 말씀하셨으나 내 이름 여호와로는 내가 그들에게 알리지 않았다.”와 같이 번역했습니다.

뉴인터내셔널버전은 이 단어를 “하나님께서 모세에게도 말씀하셨다!”로 번역했습니다. 히브리어 성경이나 헬라어 성경을 번역하는 것은 언제나 도전이며, 여러분이 이 단순한 예에서 보시듯이, 세 번역본은 서로 다르게 번역했습니다. 옳은 번역은 뉴킹제임스버전처럼 “내가 나타났다”여야 할 것 같은데요, 히브리어 본문에서 말하는 것처럼 쓰는 동사가 있습니다: 그 동사는 “보다” = “나타나다”입니다.

이 본문의 맥락은 이렇습니다: 모세가 히브리인에게 폭력을 행사한 어떤 애굽 경찰 // 군인 // 관리를 죽였습니다. 모세는 다른 사람들이 이 사건을 말하는 것을 듣고 그의 소행이 이미 소문이 났고 곧 애굽 비밀 경찰이 그의 행방을 수소문할 것이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그래서 애굽 왕자인 모세는 시내 광야로 달아나 미디안 이교 제사장 이드로의 양떼를 치는 목동으로 일하게 됩니다.

저희는 여러분께 먼저 본문 전체를 다 읽고 결국 바로가 히브리 노예들을 풀어주어 그들이 애굽을 떠나게 하는 것이 현명할 것이라는 결론에 이르게 만드는 사건들에 주의를 기울여보시기를 권면합니다. 저는 최선을 다해 이 본문과 히브리 민족이 출애굽하고, 그 후 40년 동안 시내광야에서 방랑하며 시험받는 이 이야기를 하도록 하겠습니다. 광야 40년 세월은 고난의 학교에서 훈련받는 시간이었지만, 또한 하나님의 영광의 임재 아래 있는 시간이기도 했습니다. 적으로부터도 시내광야 같은 고되고 가혹한 자연으로부터도 여러 시험과 시련을 겪었습니다.

2016년 1월 17일 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 바로가 마음이 완악해져 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 내보내, 바로와 애굽의 귀족들을 위해 피라미드와 화려한 석실 분묘를 짓는 대규모 프로젝트로 노동하는 가혹하고 잔인한 오랜 종살이에서 해방되게 하지 않게 하는 것으로 끝납니다. 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 히브리 민족이 출애굽하여 홍해를 마른 땅으로 건너는 이야기에 거의 다가갑니다.

그래서 지금 저는 이번 안식일 토라 포션의 처음 부분으로 되돌아가고 싶습니다. 저는 여러분을 출애굽기 5장 끝으로 데려갑니다. 모세가 불 붙은 떨기나무를 보고 떨기나무에서 말씀하시는 하나님과 변론하게 되었을 때, 그는 애굽으로 돌아가 바로와 그 마법사들과 직면하지 않기 위해 가능한 모든 주장을 모색했습니다.

제 생각에 5절과 6절이 오늘날 우리 각 사람이 기억해야 할 아주 중요한 핵심 구절입니다. 하나님께서는 그분의 택한 백성, 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 씨, 이스라엘 자손에게 약속을 하셨습니다. 사실, 여러분이 텔레비전이나 라디오에서 유대인 및 이스라엘과, 이들의 아랍 무슬림 이웃들인 이스마엘과 에서의 자손들과의 전쟁에 대한 뉴스를 듣거나 신문을 읽다 보면, 여러분이 성경에서 읽는 이삭과 에서 사이의 다툼과 똑같은 다툼이 바사(페르시아, 현대 이란)왕과 에스더와 유대인 모르드개 시대 때처럼 여러 세대에 걸쳐 이어지고 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 모세가 애굽으로 돌아가 바로와 그의 “마법사들”을 직면하기를 꺼려한 것은 완전히 정당화되며 자연스러운 것입니다. 그런데 하나님께서는 그에게 바로의 마법사들 앞에서 행할 이적과 기사를 주시고, 아울러 바로가 결국 이스라엘 자손을 종살이에서 풀어주고 애굽에서 나가게 할 것이며 이스라엘 자손은 하나님께서 아브라함과 그의 씨에 기업으로 약속하신 땅에 정착하게 될 것이라는 확신을 주십니다.

이번 토라 포션에서 흥미로운 순간 중 하나는 하나님께서 바로와 그의 마법사들 앞에서 행하라고 아론과 모세에게 주신 초자연적인 이적들입니다. 제게 흥미로운 점은 애굽 마법사들도 모세와 아론이 바로와 그의 마법사들 앞에서 행한 이적 중 몇 가지를 거의 똑같이 할 수 있었다는 것입니다. 아론과 모세가 지팡이를 뱀으로 바꾼 이적을 애굽 마법사들도 따라 했지만 아론과 모세가 바꾼 뱀이 애굽 마법사들의 뱀들을 집어삼켰습니다. 제 생각에 하나님께서는 이와 같이 적으로 하여금 이적을 행하게 허락하시지만 도리어 그분을 높이고 자기는 낮아질 뿐인 결과가 되게 하여, 하나님과, 아론과 모세, 후에 갈멜산 꼭대기에서 바알 선지자와 대결한 엘리야 선지자 같이 그분의 전령의 우위를 증명해 보이십니다. 신약성경에도 예슈아의 아버지 하나님께서 이적과 기사로 이스라엘을 애굽에서 데리고 나오신 바로 그 하나님이시라는 것을 우리에게 보여주는 그런 예들이 있습니다.

제게 드는 또 다른 호기심은 이어지는 구절 출애굽기 6:6-8에 있습니다.

“그러므로 이스라엘 자손에게 말하기를 나는 여호와라 내가 애굽 사람의 무거운 짐 밑에서 너희를 빼내며 그들의 노역에서 너희를 건지며 편 팔과 여러 큰 심판들로써 너희를 속량하여 7 너희를 내 백성으로 삼고 나는 너희의 하나님이 되리니 나는 애굽 사람의 무거운 짐 밑에서 너희를 빼낸 너희의 하나님 여호와인 줄 너희가 알지라 8 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 너희를 인도하고 그 땅을 너희에게 주어 기업을 삼게 하리라 나는 여호와라 하셨다 하라”

하나님께서는 아론과 모세의 입을 통해 이스라엘 자손에게 분명하고 경이로운 이 약속들을 하십니다, “나는 여호와라 내가 애굽 사람의 무거운 짐 밑에서 너희를 빼내며 그들의 노역에서 너희를 건지며 편 팔과 여러 큰 심판들로써 너희를 속량할 것이다.” 무엇이 하나님의 이 말씀과 약속보다 더 분명할 수 있을까요? 그런 다음 하나님의 약속에 대해 이스라엘 자손의 이런 반응이 나옵니다:

우리가 이번 토라에서 읽는 이런 사건들과 보고 듣는 것들은 역사에서 한 차례 있는 것이 아닙니다. 이스라엘 자손은 훨씬 더 긴 포로생활, 종살이를 했습니다. 다소 다른 종류의 종살이이지만 거의 2,000년 동안, 애굽이 아니라 남미 끝 파타고니아에서부터 시베리아 동토, 브라질과 남미 정글에 이르기까지 전 세계 디아스포라로 아직도 종살이 중입니다. 자신들의 정신적 수갑과 불신앙에 묶여 종이 되어 있는 것입니다.

성경을 읽다 보면, 이스라엘 자손을 다시 모아 그들을 그들의 조상들의 땅으로 다시 데려오신다는 하나님의 약속을 보게 됩니다. 이스라엘의 선지자들은 이 약속을 거듭 말하고 있는데요, 에스겔 39장과 이사야서와 예레미야서와 성경의 선지서 대다수에서 예언하고 있습니다. 수 세기 동안 유대인들은 이 약속들을 읽으면서도 그들이 디아스포라로 유배되어 있으면서 학대받으며 2등 혹은 3등 국민으로서 어떻게 이 일이 가능할 수 있을지 보지 못했습니다. 그들은 그저 그것을 믿을 수 없었습니다. 하나님의 약속의 위대함은 그들의 생각과 너무 동떨어져 있어서 이성적으로 디아스포라 유대인들은 그들의 고난과 차별과 반-유대주의나 포그롬이나 유럽에서부터 지구의 대양의 섬들과 시베리아의 동토 너머에 이르기까지의 스페인 ․ 포르투갈 종교재판의 깊이 이상을 볼 수 있을 만큼의 영적, 정신적 힘이 없었습니다. 테오도르 헤르쯜과 다른 사람들은 유럽 유대인 사회에서 하나님의 이 약속들과 말씀이 진짜로 현실이 될 수 있으며 유대인들이 그들의 손으로 유대인의 정부와 유대인의 군대가 있는 유대 국가를 수립할 수 있고 유대인들이 자신들의 주인이자 이방인 세계에 물고기들이 화장실로 가는 곳이 어디인지를 가르칠 제국의 주인이 될 것이라는 것을 확신시키는 데에 애를 먹었습니다.

그렇습니다, 출애굽은 전 세계 유대인 공동체에서 가장 경축하는 성경의 절기 중 하나인 유월절 사건입니다. 그렇지만 우리 기독교 형제들은 사도들이 그리스에 있는 교회들과 유대인의 왕 예슈아의 피로 거듭난 모든 비-유대인에게 명한 것을 모릅니다.

저는 이 예루살렘 기도 목록에 사도 바울이 이방인 교회에 유월절을 지키라고 명한 것을 인용하고자 합니다.

우리는 예전 사도 시대 사람들처럼 우리 마음을 완악해지게 하지 맙시다! 우리는 하나님께서 예루살렘과 유대에서 유배된 자들을 다시 모아 그들을 그들의 땅, 이스라엘 땅 고향으로 돌아오게 하실 것이라고 이스라엘의 선지자들이 거듭 약속한 하나님의 약속을 믿읍시다. 이스라엘의 메시아이며 전 세계 온 인류의 구주이신 예슈아를 믿는 기독교인들은 하나님의 약속을 믿고 예슈아께서 예루살렘 감람산으로 다시 오실 것에 대한 준비를 해야 합니다.

그리스도께서 유대인의 왕이시니 이스라엘 편에서 유대인들과 함께 서십시오. 유대인뿐만 아니라 에베소서 2장에서 바울이 쓴 바와 같이 이전에 이방인들도 그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 통해 거듭나 하나님의 백성이 된 모든 사람들은 하나님의 언약과 이스라엘 나라에 대해 더 이상 외인이 아닙니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 17 January, 2026

The Reading from the Torah and from the Prophets and from the New Testament on Shabbat, January 17, 2026.

We will read one of the most dramatic texts in the Torah on this Shabbat. The Torah Vaera = 3 I appeared! A kind of difficult Hebrew word to translate to other languages. Some translations, like the New King James Version, translated the Hebrew Word "Vaera" as "I appeared!" The Darby translations in English translated the same word in Hebrew as "God spoke to Moses. Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name LORD I was not known to them."

The NIV translated the same word as: "God also said to Moses!" Translating the Bible from Hebrew or Greek is always a challenge, and as you see in this simple example, three translations translated in a different way. While the right simple translation should be like the NKJV "I appeared". – There is verve for speaking in the Hebrew text at all; the verb is "To See" = "Appear".

The context of this text is this. Moses killed an Egyptian Policeman // Soldier // official who was being violent against a Hebrew (Jewish) man. Moses discovered from hearing others talk about this incident that his deed was already spreading and that soon the Egyptian Secret Police would be looking for him. So, Moses, the Prince of Egypt, runs away to the Sinai Desert and finds a job as a shepherd for Jethro, a Midianite Idolatrous Priest.

We should know that for the Egyptians, being a shepherd of sheep was one of the most hated professions. Moses, from the palaces of the Pharaohs, ran away from Egypt to the Sinai Desert and worked as a Shepherd.

Our Torah Reading for this next Shabbat is from Exodus 6:3-9:35. It is a rather long reading, but it is one of the most dramatic texts in the whole Bible. We have the first revelation that Moses gets on Mount Sinai when he sees a bush that is burning with fire, and God speaks to Moses clearly and commissions Moses, the Egyptian Prince Shepherd, to return to Egypt and face Pharaoh and demand in God's name for Pharaoh to release the Hebrew slaves and let them return to the land of Canaan.

We will encourage you to read the full text first and pay attention to the dramatic events that, in the end, bring the Pharaoh to the conclusion that it would be wise for him to release the Hebrew slaves and let them leave Egypt. I will do my best to make this text and the story of the Exodus of the Hebrew nation out of Egypt, followed by 40 years of wandering and being tested in the Sinai desert. These 40 years in the desert were an education in the school of hard knocks, but also under the very presence of God's glory. Many tests and trials, both from enemies and from the very nature of a hard and harsh desert like the Sinai desert.

Our reading on Shabbat, January 11, 2026, ends with Pharaoh hardening his heart and not letting the Israelites go out of Egypt and be freed from the long period of harsh and cruel slavery working for the Pharaohs and their ambitious projects like building the Pyramids and the fancy Mastaba tombs for the Egyptian nobility. Our reading on Shabbat brings us almost to the exit of the Hebrew nation out of Egypt and crossing the Red (Reed) Sea on dry land.

I would like to delve a little in the details of our reading on Shabbat. The details are, in my opinion, some of the most exciting and challenging texts in the Torah.

So, now I would like to go back to the beginning of our Torah reading on this Shabbat. Let me take you to the end of chapter 5:1ff. After the burning bush and the arguments that Moses had with God speaking from the burning bush, and Moses seeking every possible argument with God in order not to return to Egypt and face the Pharaoh and his wiseman.

Finally, God wins, and Moses is willing to return to Egypt and tell the Pharaoh, "Let My People Go!" God gives Moses his older brother Aaron as a partner and some signs and wonders to prove to Pharaoh and his magicians that it is God, The God of Israel, who sent him to ask Pharaoh to let the children of Israel out of slavery and freely leave Egypt and return to the land of Canaan that God promised Abraham and his seed (descendants) as inheritance for their generations.

Our portion starts with the following scene: Exodus 6:1:

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country." 2 God also said to Moses, "I am the LORD! 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD, I did not make myself known to them. 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they lived as aliens. 5 Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant."

Verse 5 in chapter 6 is in my opinion a key verse and a very important verse to remember for each one of us today. God makes promises to his chosen people, the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the seed of Israel. In fact when you hear the news on your television or radio or you read the newspapers about the wars between Israel, the Jewish people, and their Arab Muslim neighbors the sons of Ishamel and Esau – what you are reading is the continuation of the same conflict between Isaac and Esau that extended over the generations to others like the king of Persia (Iran) during the days of Ester and Mordechi the Jew. The reluctance of Moses to return to Egypt and to face Pharaoh and his so-called “wise man” was totally justified and natural, but God gave him signs and wonders to perform in the face of pharaoh’s wiseman and magicians. This and the assurance of God that in the end Pharaoh will release the children of Israel out of slavery and out of Egypt and they will settle in the land of their inheritance promised to Abraham and his seed as a divine inheritance.

One of the interesting moments in our reading is the miraculous signs that God gave Aaron and Moses to perform in front of the Pharaoh and his wise-man magicians. What is interesting for me is that the Egyptian wise-man magicians also could come close to duplicating some of the signs that Moses and Aaron, his brother, did in front of Pharaoh and his wise-man. The sign of the rod of Aaron and Moses turning into a snake was duplicated by the Egyptians, but the snake that Aaron did devour the snakes of the Egyptian magicians. In my opinion God sometimes does things like this he allows the enemy to preform only to take him up high and drop him down low as a demonstration of the superiority of God and His messengers like Aaron and Moses, and later on the top of Mount Carmel Elijah the prophet and the prophets of Baal. There are such examples also in the New Testament to show us that God the father of Yeshua is the very same God that took Israel out of Egypt with signs and wonders.

Another curiosity for me are the next verses in Exodus chapter 6:6-9.

"Therefore, say to the Israelites: 'I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.'"

God makes these clear and wonderful promises to the children of Israel through the mouths of Aaron and Moses, “I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.” What could be clearer than these words and promises of God? Then here comes the response of the children of Israel to God’s promises:

Exodus 6:9 "Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and cruel bondage."

These events and experiences that we read in the Torah are not a one time in history events. The children of Israel were much longer in the captivity and slavery, a little different kind of slavery but still a slavery in the diaspora for near 2000 years not in Egypt but almost all around the world, from the tip of South America in Patagonia to the frozen fields of Siberia and to the jungles of Brazil and South America. Enslaved and bound with their own mental handcuffs and unbelief.

Reading the Bible and God's promises to regather the children of Israel and bring them back to the land of their forefathers. The prophets of Israel repeated these promises in Ezekiel 39 and in Isaiah and Jeremiah, and in the majority of the texts that our prophets in the Bible prophesied. For centuries, the Jews read these promises and just didn't see how that could be possible when they are in the diaspora, exiled, maltreated, second- or third-class citizens. They just couldn't believe it the greatness of God's promises were just so far from their imagination that rationally the Jews in the diaspora didn't have enough spiritual and mental strength to see beyond the depth of their suffering and discrimination and antisemitism and the pogroms and the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition that reached from Europe all the way around the blue ball called Earth to the islands of the oceans and the frozen fields of Siberia and beyond. Theodor Herzel and others had a hard time for the Jewish communities in Europe to convince the Jews that these promises and words of God could really become a reality and that Jews would work with their hands and build a Jewish country with a Jewish government and a Jewish army and Jews will be their own masters and owners of empires that will teach the world of the Gentiles where do fish go to the toilet.

Yes, the exodus from Egypt is justly one of the most celebrated biblical feasts in the Jewish communities around the world, the Passover Feast. But our Christian brothers don't know that the Apostles commanded the churches in Greece and all the non-jews who were born again by the blood of Yeshua the King of the Jews.

I will bring with this Jerusalem prayer list a quotation from the Apostle Paul and the command for the gentile church to celebrate the Passover.

1 Corinthians 5:6 "Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 "Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."

Let us not harden our hearts like those in the apostolic ancient time! Let us believe the promises of God and the prophets of Israel that repeatedly promised that God is going to regather the exiles from Jerusalem and Judea and return them home to their land, the Land of Israel. Christians who believe in Yeshua the Messiah of Israel and the savior of mankind around the whole world must believe the promises of God and prepare for the return of Yeshua back to Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives.

Stand for Israel and with the Jewish people because Christ is the King of the Jews. Not only the Jews but for all those who like Paul write in Ephesians chapter 2 – were gentiles but now they have become a part of the people of God through Christ's death and resurrection they were born again and they are no longer strangers to the covenants of God and to the nation of Israel.

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

 Ilana Hanhijärvi is a dear sister who is 100 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

 Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see there children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

 Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.

 Shirleyann fell this week and is recovering. please pray for her recovery and discomfort from pain.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Breast cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. is in a wheelchair recovering from a hip surgery and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida Gonzalez is taking care of it)

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
