======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 10 January, 2026
by Joseph Shulam We are starting a new year now – the year 2026! We are also starting to read from the book of Exodus 1:1-6:1. From the prophets, we will be reading from the prophet Isaiah 27:6-28:13, and 29:22-23. From the New Testament, our reading will be from Matthew 2:1-12. The book of Exodus is one of the five books of the Torah, and it is a book that takes us from slaves in Egypt to entering the Land of Canaan, the land that God promised Abraham to possess as an inheritance for all of Abraham’s generations. The Jewish nation is at least the clearest nation that holds Abraham and Isaac’s genealogical continuity until our very day. The first verse of the book of Exodus: “Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt; (every man and his household came with Jacob): Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: and Joseph was in Egypt already. And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.” (Exodus 1:1-7). The repetition of the names of the 12 sons of Jacob at the beginning of the Book of Exodus serves several significant purposes in the narrative and theological context of the Biblical text: 1. This marks the Continuity of the Narrative of the end of the book of Genesis: The opening verses of Exodus link the story of Exodus to the preceding book, Genesis. By listing the names of Jacob's sons, the text emphasizes the continuity of the Israelite identity and heritage. It reminds readers that the Israelites are the descendants of these patriarchs, reinforcing their historical and familial connection. 2. This marks the Fulfillment of God’s Promises to the patriarchs: God's promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob included the promises of descendants and the establishment of a great nation. By naming the sons of Jacob, the text highlights the fulfillment of these promises and sets the stage for the growth of the Israelite people in Egypt, leading up to the events of the Exodus. 3. Establishment of Identity: The listing of the names serves to establish and affirm the collective identity of the Israelites. It emphasizes their status as a distinct group with a shared ancestry, these are the seeds of the people of God and if you look at the very last text of the book of Revelation you see that the Bible even the Testament ends with the 12 gates of the new Jerusalem and each gate is named and dedicated to one of the 12 tribes of Israel which is particularly relevant in the context of their slavery in Egypt. This collective identity becomes a key theme as the narrative unfolds, especially in relation to their liberation and covenant with God. 4. Introduction of Key Themes: The focus on Jacob’s sons introduces themes of family, nationhood, and divine providence. As the Israelites grow in numbers in Egypt, the narrative sets up a paradox: while they thrive and multiply, they also find themselves under oppression. This theme of suffering and redemption plays a critical role throughout the Exodus narrative and, in fact, all the way through the whole Bible. It is for me very significant because in the New Testament in the promises of God that all Israel will be saved (Romans 11) and in Revelation chapter 7 every one of the tribes that is mentioned in the opening statement of the book of Exodus is sealed for redemption and continues the identiy of the sons of Jacob as they were in the time that our forefathers went down to Egypt to look for bread! One people – One destiny – One program for the redemption of humanity that flows and develops from those same 12 tribes, the sons of Jacob! 5. Setting the Stage for the Conflict: By reiterating the names of Jacob’s sons, the text foreshadows the future dynamics between the Israelites and the Egyptians. As the Israelites become numerous, the fear and oppression from the pharaoh serve to highlight the dramatic tension that drives the story forward, a key element of the Exodus experience. In summary, the repetition of the names serves both a literary and theological purpose, bridging the narrative from Genesis to Exodus, affirming the Israelites' identity, and setting the context for the unfolding drama of their deliverance from slavery. The next major historical phenomenon that has also been repeated multiple times in the history of Israel, even all the way through to the 20th Century and World War II, is that when the Hebrew nation grows and prospers in place of praise and reward, the nations develop a hellish hate and desire to kill and destroy the Hebrew nation. This phenomenon is unique to the nation of Israel. Much of the modern medical procedures and medications were developed and invented by Jews, but in place of rewarding and celebrating the contributions of the Jewish scientists who contributed to modern surgical procedures, developed modern medications that save millions of lives, hate and jealousy and murder. My question is this, what will those who hate Jews and kill Jews and want to nihilate us will do when Yeshua the Messiah son of Abraham and son of David does to those Muslims and Christians and whoever it might be that hates Jews and persecutes Jews? The other question is what will those antisemites and jews haters do when they realize that this circumcised Jew named Yeshua is alive and well and coming down to this blue ball called Earth to judge the people and the nations! Will all those who hate Jews run to find some rat den to hide themselves, thinking that Yeshua and God himself will not find them hiding and shaking and urinating in their pants from fear that that Jew wearing a crown of thorns will just let them go free? Enough about the first verses of the book of Exodus! Let me continue with our reading from the book of Exodus, chapter 1:8 “Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph. 9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are 1more and mightier than we: 10come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land. 11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. All the good years that the children of Israel lived in the land of Goshen, the place where Joseph the son of Jacob acquired for them from Pharaoh, didn’t mean anything, a new pharaoh comes up and seeks someone to accuse of plotting against Egypt. This same paradigm repeats itself multiple times in our history and even in our own days antisemitism is multiplying itself around the world to as far places as Australia and New Zealand. There is something pathological embedded in the under the hair of races and nations who might have never spoken to a Jew or had a meal with a Jew who suddenly exhibit a behavior of a rabid dog! Let me give a short analysis of Exodus chapter 1:9-12. The children of Israel were welcomed by the pharaoh, who gave the family of Joseph the land of Goshen as a place to live because of Joseph’s contribution to save Egypt from hunger during the years of drought. Suddenly, a new pharaoh ascends the throne of Egypt and exhibits paranoid fears that these Israelites, who are living peacefully up north, far from the Egyptian centers of civilization. The paranoid fears far from reality cause the Pharaoh's desire to eliminate those peace-loving, simple Israelite Jews who have only blessed Egypt and are the family of Joseph, who saved Egypt from the famine. Reading these ancient texts is like a movie film run backwards because the very same phenomenon is playing alive on every television set around the world. Jews are being blamed and persecuted and physically killed and damaged without doing anything bad, just for being Jews. This chapter of Exodus and the rest chapters that are read next Shabbat in every synagogue around the world ought to be a kind of waking up from a nightmare because the very same reasons that the Egyptian Pharaoh feared from his own paranoia are also the excuses of the modern self-hating paranoid publics around the world today. What do those antisemites, restless pagans, think will happen? Do they think that Jews will come out of their synagogues on the Day of Atonement and take Washington, D.C. by storm? Like some tried to do just in Washington a few years ago? Don’t worry, Jews are busy working to feed their families and educate their children in the good universities. The story of the Exodus is a story of a small group of one family coming down to Egypt because of famine, and having one of their members who made it to an honorable position in the Egyptian government and brought the rest of his family to save them from hunger! The Jews // Israelites have existed as a nation for nearly 4000 years, and they have never conquered another nation or abused their power to do harm and enslave other people or conquer other nations and make them slaves. What jews then and now want is to live their lives and feed their families and send their children to good schools and universities to become medical doctors and scientists to bless and not to curse to bring new medical procedures and medications and vaccinations to make our world a better place to live. Now about Moses and his encounters with Pharaoh and his wise-man! The most important thing that is of greatest importance may be in the whole Torah is this simple truth: God is in Heaven with his angels and his heavenly business. However, God’s eyes go around the world looking to bless and to promote goodness and blessings on the human race however, when humans are acting in ways that are not right and not according to the DNA that God put into every one of us human beings and expects us to live and behave like human beings who have the divine DNA implanted in us, our souls. Only when we as humans suffer in the hands of other humans who have lost their humanity and become beastly does God bring down plagues and floods and rain death and suffering in order to remind us who we are and how we ought to live and treat each other as humans. The other important aspect of the Torah reading on this Shabbat is that God, knowing what will happen long before it happens, prepares for every occasion long before it happens. This is how God prepared Pharaoh’s daughter to go bathe in the river with her handmaids. This is how God prepares the family of Moses to make a basket that is water-proof and put the baby Moses in the basket and it was guided right in the place that Pharaoh’s daughter was bathing in the water. This is how God prepared Moses to be a shepherd working for a pagan priest as a shepherd of his flock. The miracles and encounters of Moses with the Egyptian wiseman were all orchestrated by God to direct history and prepare the deliverance of the children of Israel from Slavery in Egypt to become a free nation with a 40 yearlong boot-camp to make them ready to be emancipated and free to rule themselves and be sovereign nation in the land that God promised Abraham and his descendants as an everlasting inheritance.
