이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 “파라샷 에케브”, 신명기 7:12~11:25입니다. 선지서에서 읽는 하프타라는 이사야 49:14~51:3입니다. 신약성경에서는 히브리서 11:8-13와 로마서 8:31-39를 읽습니다.
이번 주 토라 포션은 (신명기) 세 번째 포션입니다. 우리는 모세가 다시금 십계명을 주고 하나님께서 그가 요단강을 건너는 것을 허락하시지 않는 것에 대한 불평을 지나왔습니다. 이제 신명기 7장에서 모세는 약속의 땅 가나안 땅에 들어가는 새로운 경험을 대비하여 이스라엘 백성을 준비시키기 시작하고 있습니다. 모세는 이 백성이 이제 요단강과 지중해 사이의 땅에서 보게 될 모든 것이 그들에게 완전히 새로운 것이라는 점을 압니다. 그들은 놀라고 충격을 받고 도전을 받을지도 모르고, 주님의 이름으로 제비뽑기를 통해 각 지파에게 주어질 분할된 영토로 들어가는 길에서는 싸워야 합니다. 신명기 7:7-8에서 우리는 다음과 같은 구절을 볼 수 있습니다: “여호와께서 너희를 기뻐하시고 너희를 택하심은 너희가 다른 민족보다 수효가 많기 때문이 아니니라 너희는 오히려 모든 민족 중에 가장 적으니라 여호와께서 다만 너희를 사랑하심으로 말미암아, 또는 너희의 조상들에게 하신 맹세를 지키려 하심으로 말미암아 자기의 권능의 손으로 너희를 인도하여 내시되 너희를 그 종 되었던 집에서 애굽 왕 바로의 손에서 속량하셨나니.” – 신명기 7:7,8 이 구절은 예슈아의 겨자씨 비유 이야기의 기초입니다. 예슈아의 말씀 “모든 민족 중 가장 작다” (마태복음 13:31)는 것은 결코 겨자씨를 말씀하시는 것이 아닙니다. 겨자씨는 밭 식물 중 전혀 가장 작은 씨가 아니기 때문입니다. 파슬리, 딜, 타임, 오레가노 씨는 모두 겨자씨보다 훨씬 더 작습니다. 그러나 성경에서 “씨”라는 단어는 민족, 아브라함의 씨, 다윗의 씨, 등등에 사용됩니다. 그래서 모세는 이스라엘 민족이 모든 민족 중 가장 작다고 말합니다. 신명기 7:11-16 말씀은 시내광야에서 태어나고 자라 한 번도 보통 성읍이나 마을 안에서, 돌로 지은 집에서 살아본 적 없는 노예 무리 2세대에게 하는 최종 격려입니다. 그들은 요새도 있고 훈련도 된 군대인 적과 마주하게 될 것입니다. 이것은 고되고 새로운 경험이 될 것이기에 모세는 이들에게 그들이 순종하며 시내산에서 받은 언약을 지키면 주님께서 그들과 함께 계시며 그들에게 복 주시고 그들을 보호해주시고 그들을 고치실 것이라고 확신시키며 이들을 격려하고 힘을 줘야 했습니다. 모세가 그들에게 주는 명령 중 놀라운 부분은 16절입니다: “네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 넘겨주신 모든 민족을 네 눈이 긍휼히 여기지 말고 진멸하며 그들의 신을 섬기지 말라 그것이 네게 올무가 되리라.” – 신명기 7:16 21세기의 우리에게는 모세를 통해 주신, 모든 민족을 진멸하고 그들을 긍휼히 여기지 말라는 하나님의 이 명령은 너무 가혹해 보입니다. 그러나 여러분이 토라도 없고 낯선 사람들과 약한 시민들을 대접한다는 개념도 없는, 가나안 땅에 모여든 이들 이교도 종족과 민족들을 고려할 때, 그 땅을 차지하고 곤란한 일을 최소화하는 유일한 현실적 방법은, 하나님께서 이스라엘에 명하신 것에 순종하여 행하는 것, 즉 여러분의 적을 긍휼히 여기지 않는 것입니다. 알렉산더대왕이나 나폴레옹이나 징기스칸 같은 모든 위대한 전사들은 이 원리를 아주 잘 알았고, 이런 이유로 그들은 그들의 전쟁을 이기는 데 성공했습니다. 여러분의 성경을 펴고 신명기 7:12~11:25을 읽으시기 바랍니다. 이 본문을 읽으면 용기를 얻고 많은 의문과 주님께서 어떻게 역사하시고 이날까지도 우리에게 뭘 요구하시는지 깨달음을 얻고 나오게 될 것입니다. 제 말은 우리의 적들을 죽이라는 의미가 아니라, 가능하다면 그들을 우리 친구로 만들어 무장해제 시키거나 훨씬 더 강하고 더 잘 준비되어 그들을 궁지에 가두라는 의미입니다. 혹은, 선택의 여지가 없다면, 우리에게 가용한 최선의 병력으로 우리의 적들을 막으라는 뜻입니다. 선지서에서 읽는 부분인 이사야 49:14~51:3 역시 아주 흥미로운 말씀입니다. 이사야 49:1-14는 아주 중요한 본문으로, 여기에서 하나님께서는 그분의 종을 민족 전체였던 데서 바꾸십니다. 이 민족은 열방(이방)의 빛이 되는 사명을 행하는 데 처참히 실패했습니다. 이제 하나님께서는 이스라엘 민족이 성취하기로 되어 있었고 그럴 숙명이었던 이 사명을 그것을 모두 성취할 “한 사람”에게로 옮기십니다. 이사야 49:6에서 열방의 빛이 되는 사명은 이스라엘 민족에게서 열방의 빛이 되는 일을 성취하고, 온 이스라엘을 대표할 그를 통해 이방을 하나님과의 완전한 교제와 그분을 아는 지식에 이르게 할 “한 개인”, 메시아에게 옮겨집니다. 이 메시아는 52:13부터 53장까지에서 더 계시될 것입니다. 히브리서 11:8-13와 로마서 8:31-39는 우리에게 믿음의 사람들의 목록을 가져다주며, 바로 그 구절은 우리에게 “믿음의 조상”이라고 불리는 우리의 조상 아브라함을 상기시켜 줍니다. 이 말씀은 그 자신과 그의 씨의 영원한 유업으로 가나안 땅을 약속 받았던 아브라함이 그 땅을 상속하지 않았고 그에게 주어진 그 땅에서 이방인과 객이었음을 일깨워줍니다. 이 말씀은 우리가 이 세상에서 기껏해야 유랑생활인 삶을 살고 있으며 우리는 이 세상에 영구한 집이 없음을 기억하게 하는 중요한 말씀입니다. 우리는 모두 가나안 땅을 차지하러 들어가는 이스라엘 자손과 같지만, 우리가 어디에 우리 집을 짓든, 무슨 재료를 사용하든, 그래도 우리는 아브라함처럼 하나님의 좋은 지구에서 순례자이며 이방인일 것입니다. 온 우주에서 우리 은하도 잠시 머무르는 곳입니다. 시작이 있고 끝도 있습니다. “시간의 짧은 역사”라는 책의 저자 스티븐 호킹도 우리 은하가 존재하지 않다가 존재하게 된 시간이 있었고, 더 이상 존재하지 않게 되는 시간이 있을 것이라고 썼습니다. 바로 이런 이유로, 히브리서 기자는 믿음의 조상 아브라함이 이 땅에서 이방인이었고 영구한 집이 없었다는 사실을 강조하고 있는 것입니다. 제게 이것은 아주 중요한 진리인데요, 우리는 이것을 자주 잊고, 영구하지 않은 이 모든 것들에 애착을 갖으려 합니다. 저는 이것이 토라와 선지서와 신약 포션에서 받은 가장 중요한 교훈 중 하나라고 생각합니다. 잠시 머무는 이 세상의 모든 사람은 랍비 나흐만의 짧은 시를 기억해야 합니다: “온 세상은 완전히 좁은 다리, 우리 임무는 두려움 없이 이 다리를 건너는 것!” 제가 어느 교회나 메시아닉 공동체에서도 오랫동안 듣지 못한 오래된 기독교 찬송이 있습니다. 이것은 아직도 제 마음에 메아리치는 찬송인데요, 저는 이것을 기억해야 합니다: 이 세상은 내 집 아니네 (죄 많은 이 세상은 내 집 아니네), 짐 리브스 이 세상은 내 집 아니네

주님의 뜻이면 2021년 7월 29일 이번 목요일에 저는 각막 이식을 위한 눈 수술이 또 있습니다. 제 왼쪽 눈 수술은 거의 세 달 전이었고, 완전 실명이었다가 아주 짙은 안개를 통해 보는 것처럼 보기 시작했습니다.
이번에 의사들은 제게 제 왼쪽 눈이 훨씬 더 잘 보이도록 각막 수술을 해주고자 합니다. 저는 여러분의 기도가 필요한데요, 이 모험이 그야말로 모험이기 때문입니다. 이런 생각을 시작한 의사들은 제게 해보라고 용기를 주며 이렇게 말했습니다: “밑져야 본전이잖아요!” 글쎄, 이제는 그들이 각막 이식 수술을 하고 싶어 하며 제게 이 수술 후에 훨씬 더 잘 보게 될 것이라고 말합니다. 저를 위해 기도해 주시고 의사들에게 지혜를 주시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
마르시아의 건강과 기력과 활력을 위해 계속 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 이렇게 18개월 이상 집에만 있는 것도 그 댓가가 있는 것이 분명합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – July 29, 2021

The readings for this Shabbat are from Parashat Eikev: Deuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25. From the prophets, the Haftarah: Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3. From the New Testament we will be reading Hebrews 11:8-13, and Romans 8:31-39.
The Torah portion for this week is the third portion. We have passed the repetition that Moses gives of the Ten Commandments and his complaint that God doesn’t let him cross the Jordan River. Now in Deuteronomy chapter 7 Moses is beginning to prepare the people of Israel for their new experience of entering the land of Canaan, the land of promise. Moses understands that all that these people will now see, in the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, will be totally new for them. They might be surprised and shocked and challenged and must fight their way into their allotted territories given to each tribe by lots cast in the name of the Lord. In chapter 7:7-8, we find the following verses: “The Lord did not set His love on you nor choose you because you were more in number than any other people, for you were the least of all peoples; but because the Lord loves you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore to your fathers, the Lord has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” – Deuteronomy7:7,8 [NKJV] These verses are the foundation for Yeshua’s parables and stories that contain the mustard seed. The words of Yeshua “The least of all peoples” (Matthew 13:31) is not talking of the mustard seed at all. Because the mustard seed is far from being the smallest seed among the garden plants. The seed of the parsley, dill, Thyme, oregano, are all much smaller than the seed of the mustard. However, in the Bible the word “seed” is used more for people, the seed of Abraham, the seed of David… So, Moses says that Israel as a nation is the smallest of all the nations. The text of Deuteronomy 7:11-16 is the ultimate encouragement for this band of second-generation slaves that was born and raised in the wilderness of Sinai and have never lived in normal cities and villages and in stone homes. They are going to face an enemy that is a trained army with fortresses. This will be a hard and new experience and Moses has to encourage them and give them strength by assuring them that the Lord is with them and will bless them and protect them and heal them if they will be obedient and keep the covenant given to them at Mount Sinai. The surprising part of these instructions that Moses gives them is in verse 16: “Also you shall destroy all the peoples whom the Lord your God delivers over to you; your eye shall have no pity on them; nor shall you serve their gods, for that will be a snare to you.” – Deuteronomy 7:16 [NKJV] For us in the 21st Century, this command of God through Moses to destroy all the peoples and have no pity on them seems too harsh. But, when you consider that these pagan tribes and nations that have gathered in the land of Canaan have no Torah and have no idea of treating the stranger and the weak civilly – the only realistic way to possess the land and minimize troubles is to be obedient and do what God commanded Israel, that is to have no pity on your enemy. Every great warrior like Alexander the Great, Napoleon, or Genghis Khan understood well these principles, and this is the reason why they were successful to win their battles. Please open your bible and read Deuteronomy chapters 7:12 – 11:25. Reading this text you will come out encouraged and full of questions and informed of how the Lord works and what he demands from us even unto this very day. I don’t mean to kill our enemies, but to neutralize them by making them our friends if that is possible, or to keep them at bay by being much stronger and better equipped. Or if there is no choice, to stop our enemies with the best war machines available to us. The reading from the prophet Isaiah 49:14 - 51:3 is also a very interesting text. Isaiah 49:1-14 is a very important text in which God switches His servant from being the whole nation that failed miserably to do the mission of being the light for the nations (gentiles). Now God moves that mission to one person who will accomplish all that the nation of Israel was supposed and destined to accomplish. In chapter 49:6 the mission to be a light to the nations is moved from the nation of Israel to one individual person who will accomplish being that light to the nations and bring the gentiles to the full fellowship and knowledge of God through that one person who represents all of Israel, the Messiah. This Messiah will be revealed more in chapter 52:13 and chapter 53. Hebrews 11:8-13 and Romans 8:31-39 bring us the catalogue of the faithful and that specific verse reminds us of our Father Abraham who is called “The father of the faithful.” This is a reminder that Abraham, who was promised the land of Canaan as his and his seed’s eternal inheritance, didn’t get to inherit the land but was a stranger and a tourist in the land that was given to him. This reading is important for us to remember that we are living a nomadic life in this world at best, and that we don’t have a permanent home in this world. We are all like the children of Israel entering the land of Canaan to possess it, but like Abraham, regardless of where we build our home, and whatever materials we use, we are still going to be pilgrims and strangers on God’s good earth. In the whole universe, our galaxy is also a transient place, it has a beginning, and it also has an end. Even Steven Hawking, the writer of the book “A Brief History of Time,” wrote that there was a time that our world (galaxy) didn’t exist and then came into existence, and that there will be a time that it will no longer exist. For this very reason the writer of the book of Hebrews is stressing the fact that Abraham the Father of faith was a stranger in the land and didn’t have a permanent home. For me this is a very important truth that we often forget and we try to be attached to all these non-permanent things. I suppose that this is one of the most important lessons that I received from the Torah, the prophets, and the New Testament readings. Everyone in our transient world must remember Rabbi Nachman’s short poem: “The whole World complete is a narrow bridge and our task is to cross this bridge without fear!” There is also an old Christian hymn that I have not heard for a long time in any church or Messianic fellowship. It is a hymn that still reverberates in my mind, and I need to remember it: This World Is Not My Home, by Jim Reeves This world is not my home

The Lord willing this Thursday, July 29, 2021, I am scheduled to have another eye surgery for a cornea transplant. The first surgery on my left eye was near 3 months ago, and from total blindness I started to see through a very thick fog.
Now the doctors want to give me a cornea transplant that will make my left eye see much better. I need your prayer because this adventure was just that – an adventure. The professors who initiated this idea and encouraged me to go for it said it like this: “you have nothing to lose!” Well, now they want to do a cornea transplant and they say that I will see much better after this procedure. Please pray for me and pray for the doctors to have wisdom.
Please keep praying for Marcia’s health and strength and energy level. It is clear that this being at home for more than 18 months has a price.
I have some new prayer requests from brothers and sisters. Our dear friend Mahmud’s sister Gouzlan is very sick and I ask you to pray for Gouzlan and also for Maria Mahmud’s daughter who is getting married in Bulgaria in a few weeks.
Also I have been asked to add the mother of Rebekka our dear sister in our prayers. Pray for Livia Schnell Nothen and for Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker. Guilherme is in serious health condition. We are also praying for Artuza de Oliveira a dear sister in Brazil.
Our dear brother Merv who is now living in Canada after more than 30 years of living in Jerusalem and being a member of our congregation. Merv was taken to the hospital with suspicion of heart issues, but praise the Lord, Merv is back home and his problem is not with the heart but other issues that are painful but not as serious as heart issues. Still keep Merv and Merla in your prayers!
Please pray for Israel and pray for the new government to have enough courage and wisdom to know how to apply everything that is good and holy and righteous for us in Israel and for our Arab neighbors.
COVID-19 has the new mutation D+ that is spreading in Israel and the government is trying to bring back the restrictions and the closures. Israel like the rest of our world is in need of great help from our Lord.
Our dear brother Jair is out of the hospital in in Curitiba, Brazil, at home and recovering from COVID-19 at home. Please keep Jair the leader of the Sar-El congregation in Curitiba in your prayers.
Pray and support Netivyah during these very hard times, for opportunities to do good and to bless and feed and support the population of Israel, those in need whose number has increased by many percentage points during these difficult days in Israel.
The needs of Netivyah for more staff to be able to keep up with the amount of work and the challenges that take both time and money, and to keep up with the needs and the opportunities that God is putting in front of Netivyah.
Sarit our dear sister is out of the hospital and in a convalescent home for a few weeks.
We have many dear brothers and sisters in both India and Brazil who are still very much in serious trouble with the coronavirus situation and need our prayers. We need to continue to pray for India and Brazil and especially for our dear brothers and sisters in these two countries.
I received a special prayer request from our dear brother Isaac in Chennai, India. Brother Isaac asked us to pray especially for sister Sheela Stephen. Sister Sheela’s lungs are in serious need of oxygen and right now oxygen is hard to find for coronavirus patients.
Keep praying for the Rosenfeld family, the young and the old.
Please pray for a dear brother, Malcolm Thomas King from the UK.
Please consider helping Netivyah to continue caring and feeding the poor of Jerusalem and blessing the people of this city that need help to feed their children and families.
We pray for the Lord to provide a young leader for our youth. Our youth ministry is one of our pride and joys, and we want to invest more and do more with our youth.
Please pray for the Teaching from Zion publication that has been printed and distributed by the thousands around the world free of charge. You can also subscribe to receive the Teaching from Zion Magazine by mail, a hard copy. This too is free of charge. The Lord has always been faithful to supply our needs. He has also been precise and provided what we need, not too little and not too much.
The Hamotzi food program is restarting with mostly new candidates provided by the city of Jerusalem. Our goal is to simply bless the needy of Jerusalem and make sure that those families with many children and old people, and single mothers, and others, both Jews and a few Arab families, have something fresh and good and healthy to eat. We need your prayers and your help to make this important purely humanitarian service possible. We are following the instruction of Paul in Romans 15:24-27.
Please pray for Netivyah and for the Netivyah leadership and find ways to partner and participate in the great blessing that the ministry of Netivyah is here in Israel and also around the world. Please pray and seek ways to partner and contribute financially for the Lord’s work in Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.
Both Yehuda and I continue to teach on Zoom and on YouTube and on the Netivyah Facebook every week and sometimes every day. Please pray for these teachings to bear fruit for the Kingdom of God. Enjoy the very fine teaching and enjoy learning from God’s Word. It is all free of charge!
Please continue to pray for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation.

Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her health and her situation. Our granddaughter Noam is a senior in high school and working with Zoom to finish her high school. Pray for the Lord to give Noam guidance and direction for graduation from high school.
Our grandson Joseph also needs prayer to be able to get into college with proper scholarships. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson to be protected and spared any contact and infection of the coronavirus.
I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer.

We have received many letters of gratitude and praise for our scholarship fund through which we support more than 40 Israeli disciples of Yeshua who are students in Israel’s fine academic institutions and universities.
The gratitude and appreciation of these students is such an encouragement and refreshing hope for the future generation of Jewish Disciples of Yeshua in this land. Netivyah has been doing this for longer than 30 years and we have generations of students from all of Israel and from most of the Messianic congregations in Israel.
For a season we had a special fund to support Arab Christian medical students and we have supported dozens of Arab Christians from the Galilee with their medical school studies. It is a great program that Netivyah started many years ago and the fruit of these scholarships has produced lawyers and doctors and pharmacists, nurses…
We need your prayers and your support to be able to continue this wonderful work of creating the next generation of disciples of Yeshua in this God-given land of Israel.

I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias.
Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.

Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.

Please pray for our two grandchildren. They are both graduating in a few weeks from high school. They are both facing this important change in their lives. Noam our granddaughter also had her 18th birthday on May 1st. This was a very big day for Noam. She is free from high school and also from other obligations and is privileged to make her own decisions and choices in life. Pray for Noam on this major crossroad of life for her and ask the Lord to bless Noam and to give her clear direction and guidance for what is good and right and holy in her life.
Both Noam and Joseph, our two grandchildren, are extremely talented and good students. Both are “A” students and excellent young people, but both need divine protection and guidance to make good and smart and right choices for life.
When I was 18 years old and cut off from my family because of my faith in the Messiah, I had no one on my side and no one to guide me. The Lord’s providential leading and guidance was the only guide that I had. I praise the Lord for His goodness and direction in my life.
I pray that both Joseph and Noam will have such divine strength and vision for their own future that only right and good choices will be their gift from the Almighty God of Israel and Yeshua our Lord.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
