As the Feast of Passover comes to its conclusion, we are at once brought into Parashat Shemini (Leviticus 9–11). This transition is not accidental. It reflects one of the deepest theological movements in the Torah: Redemption is not the goal—it is the beginning. Israel is redeemed from spiritual Egypt through the blood of the lamb, but in the reading of the Torah portion Shemini, Israel and all of God's people must learn how to live in the presence of a holy God as HIS servants in fear and trembling and at the same time with joy and celebration. The Fire of Acceptance Leviticus 9:1–7 (NKJV). "It happened on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. And he said to Aaron, "Take for yourself a young bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. And to the children of Israel you shall speak, saying, 'Take a kid of the goats as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, as a burnt offering, also a bull and a ram as peace offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD, and a grain offering mixed with oil; for today the LORD will appear to you.'" Leviticus 9:22–24 "Then Aaron lifted his hand toward the people, blessed them, and came down from offering the sin offering, the burnt offering, and peace offerings. And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of meeting and came out and blessed the people. Then the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people, and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces." A Joseph Shulam Observation The same fire that accepts the sacrifice becomes, in the next chapter, the fire that judge’s disobedience. Leviticus 10:1–3 (NKJV) Holiness always produces Crisis when it encounters disobedience, pride, and self-aggrandizement of the leadership! "Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. So, fire went out from the LORD and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what the LORD spoke, saying: 'By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy. And before all the people I must be glorified.'" Sifra (Torat Kohanim, Shemini) Rabbinic Reflection Rabbinical statement from Sifra Shemini 1:1 (paraphrased translation): "I will be sanctified through those who are near to Me"— "This teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, is exacting with the righteous even to a hair’s breadth." The closer one comes to God, the higher the standard that God expects from him! Midrash Rabbah (Leviticus Rabbah 12:1) "Moses said to Aaron: I knew that this House would be sanctified through those beloved to God… I thought it would be through you or me; now I see they were greater than us." We should note that Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu are not portrayed as rebels. They are portrayed as men of high spiritual personal ambitions who wanted to break the traditional run-of-the-mill daily procedures and renovate the traditional procedure with a kind of short-cut new twist without obedience to the clear instruction and traditional everyday practice. This week's reading has the tragic death of Aaron the High Priest's two sons, Nadab and Abihu and in the reading from the prophets the death of Uzzah who innocently thought that he is helping God stabilise the ark of the covenant on the road up to Jerusalem probably in the climb of Mount Castle. Again, a reading that seems at first glance totally unnecessary. All Uzzah wanted is to help and keep the Ark of the Covenant stable and not in danger of falling off the oxcart that was rocking going up the rocky road up to Jerusalem. The Death of Uzzah - 2 Samuel 6:1–7 (NKJV) Then David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah to bring up from there the ark of God… And when they came to Nachon's threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. I have always been puzzled by this story and by God's action to kill Uzzah, a faithful servant who only wanted innocently to keep the Ark of the Covenant from falling going up the rocky hill up to Jerusalem. The whole purpose of bringing the Ark of the Covenant was a political desire to make Jerusalem not only the political capital of the Israelite nation, but also the spiritual capital of the Hebrew Nation. This same Ark of the covenant was in the hands of the Philistines. By miracles, God had it returned to the hands of the Israelites in Beth Shemesh, who also sent it up to the house of Abinadab, who made his son Eleazer the caretaker of the Ark of the Covenant in the village of Kirjath Jearim (today's friendly Arab village of Abu Gosh). Just in this one episode related to the Ark of the Covenant you have so many unorthodox events much more challenging than Uzzah's desire to stabilise the Ark of the covenant from falling off the cart that the oxen were carrying up the hill to Jerusalem. It always puzzled me why God was so harsh on this Uzzah, who innocently tried to help. The only rational reason for the death of Uzzah that I could come up with is that probably Uzzah was a Priest and should have known better and trusted God not to allow the Ark of the Covenant to fall of the cart. Parallel between the story of Nadab and Abihu Aaron's sons and Uzzah the priest is that in both cases the is action taken by individuals that no confidence that God knows to take care of HIMSELF and of his holy instruments. And in both cases, the priests took the action without authority from God. In both cases, the priests were not authorized by God. Nadab and Abihu took unauthorized fire and used it to offer the sacrifice. Uzzah, unauthorized, touched the holy ark of God's covenant. In both cases, there was death by divine judgment. I wonder there are not so preachers and church leaders and also some Jewish Rabbis today that don't drop dead right in the middle of the Sabbath service! almud Yoma 53a "Even a slight deviation in the service brings danger, for the Divine Presence is precise." IV. Laws of Clean and Unclean – Leviticus 11 (NKJV excerpt) Leviticus 11:44–45 (NKJV) "For I am the LORD your God. You shall therefore consecrate yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I am holy…. For I am the LORD who brings you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy." Notice the logic: "I brought you out of Egypt → therefore you must be holy." Redemption demands transformation. 1. Hebrews 9:11–14 (NKJV). "But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come… Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all…. For if the blood of bulls and goats… sanctifies… how much more shall the blood of Christ… cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?" 2. Mark 7:18–23 (NKJV) "Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him…. What comes out of a man, that defiles a man… evil thoughts, adulteries… pride, foolishness." 3. Acts 10:13–15 (NKJV). "Rise, Peter; kill and eat." But Peter said, "Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean." And a voice spoke to him again… "What God has cleansed you must not call common." Sifra on Leviticus "The offering is according to the intent of the heart." Talmud Yoma 85b. "Repentance and Yom Kippur atone… but sins between man and God require repentance." Rambam = Maimonides (as reflected in Sifra tradition) Sacrifices are not magical—they are: • Educational • Substitutional symbols • Means of drawing near (korban = to draw near) Messianic Framework: Passover → Priesthood Step 1: Passover (Exodus 12) "Blood of the lamb! Salvation from death! Step 2: Sinai • Covenant • Revelation Step 3: The Tabernacle and the Temple in Jerusalem are symbols that God dwells among the people of Israel. • Where Priesthood begins - Responsibility intensifies Fulfillment of all the sacrifices in the Torah pattern is the Passover Lamb Yeshua the Messiah. Here are my final thoughts" 1) The greatest danger is misunderstanding God's grace. 2) Religion might lead someone to think: "I am redeemed—therefore I am safe." Our reading in the Torah on this Shabbat answers. "You are redeemed—therefore you must be holy." 3) The fire of God has not changed. God still accepts our Obedience. 4) The same God who brought Israel out of Egypt is the one who sent Yeshua to redeem us, demanding reverence in His presence. 5) God still accepts and demands obedience.
