유월절 안식일인 이번 안식일에 읽는 토라는 출애굽기 33:12~34:26, 하프타라(선지서에서 읽는 말씀)는 에스겔 37:1-14, 신약성경은 로마서 9:14-29입니다. 이것은 유월절(무교절) 기간 중에 있는 안식일에 읽는 특별 포션입니다.

저희는 이스라엘 온 나라가 완전히 감금되었던 48시간에서 막 해방되었습니다. 오늘 4월 10일 금요일에 이스라엘 국민은 식료품 쇼핑이나 약국에 갈 수 있게 되었고, 심지어 차를 몰아 다른 도시로도 갈 수 있게 되었습니다. 다음 일요일부터는 모든 사람이 집 밖에 나갈 때 마스크를 써야 합니다. 저희는 다행스럽게 홍콩에서 귀한 자매님 한 분이 저희 회중을 위해 마스크 200개를 보내주셨습니다. 세계 여러 곳의 성도들의 형제애에 대해 하나님께 감사드립니다. 저희는 지난 주 안식일처럼 이번 유월절 안식일도 컴퓨터(온라인) 연결하여 지킵니다. 지난 주 안식일에 저희는 “줌(Zoom)”이라는 프로그램을 사용했는데요, 세계 예닐곱 나라의 형제자매님들이 온라인 예배에 함께 참여했었습니다. 이것이 쉽지도 간단하지도 않지만, 저희는 이것을 다시 시도하여 할 계획입니다. 이것이 처음이고 대체로 현지의 저희 회중을 위한 것이라서 영어 번역은 없다는 것을 말씀드려야 할 것 같습니다. 죠지아 속담에 “늙은 개에게는 새로운 묘기를 가르칠 수 없다.”는 말처럼, 저는 이것이 무엇이고 어떻게 된 것인지 잘 모릅니다. 저는 74세 나이에 제가 늙은 개라고 생각해야 할 것 같은데요, 제가 이 새로운 기술을 어떻게 운용하는지 네티비야의 젊은 지도자들이나 제 손주들과 속도를 맞춰가지 못하기 때문입니다.

이번 토라 포션에 저를 당황하게 만드는 것이 두 가지 있습니다. 출애굽기 33:12-13, “모세가 여호와께 아뢰되 보시옵소서 주께서 내게 이 백성을 인도하여 올라가라 하시면서 나와 함께 보낼 자를 내게 지시하지 아니하시나이다 주께서 전에 말씀하시기를 나는 이름으로도 너를 알고 너도 내 앞에 은총을 입었다 하셨사온즉 내가 참으로 주의 목전에 은총을 입었사오면 원하건대 주의 길을 내게 보이사 내게 주를 알리시고 나로 주의 목전에 은총을 입게 하시며 이 족속을 주의 백성으로 여기소서.”

이스라엘을 애굽의 종살이에서 구출해낸 최고 지도자 모세는 약속의 땅까지 시내광야에서 이스라엘 백성을 인도하라고 세상의 창조자의 위임을 받았습니다. 모세와 같은 위상을 가진 보통의 사람이라면 자부심이 가득해져 가장 높으신 하사님의 이 위임에 깡충깡충 뛰었을 것입니다. 그런데 바로 이 순간 모세는 몇 년 전 시내산 등성이에서 불타는 떨기나무 앞에서 처음 주님을 만났던 바로 그 사람입니다. 모세가 주님께 말하는 것은 “저는 주님의 도움 없이, 이 여정에 주님께서 저희와 함께 가시지 않으시면 이것을 할 수 없습니다.”입니다. 우리 각 사람은 어느 시기에 어느 곳에서 어느 면에서 지도자입니다. 그런데 권위를 가지고 사람들을 이끄는 사람들 중에 일부 지도자는 자기가 혼자서는 할 수 없다는 것을 압니다. 하나님의 사람들을 인도하는 것은 “론 레인저(혼자 행동하는)” 조로나 슈퍼맨의 일이 아닌, 팀의 일입니다. 모세는 주님께 말합니다, “나와 함께 누구를 보내실 것입니까!” 모세는 이 일이, 애굽 왕자였던 자신이 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 하나님의 선택을 받은 사람일지라도, 한 사람의 지도자에게 너무 크다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

여기에 회중(교회)으로서, 국제 사역으로서 저희의 도전이 있습니다! 저희는 매우 높은 목표가 있는데요, 저희가 믿기에 전능하신 하나님 그분께서 저희에게 주신 목표입니다. 저는 환상이나 불타는 떨기나무 같은 체험으로 저나 네티비야에 친히 주셨다는 뜻으로 말씀드리는 것이 아닙니다. 저는 그냥, 성경의 여러 장에서 하나님의 말씀을 읽고, 하나님과 예슈아와 그분께서 그분의 모든 제자에게 맡기신 위임 속에 살아있는 말씀과 더불어 교제한 결과로 이 목표를 받았고 이것을 네티비야에 넘겨주었습니다. 예슈아의 위임은 제가 이해한 바로는 간단합니다: “내가 네게 준 복음을 가지고 가서 세상을 변화시켜라! 세상(열방)을 시온으로 데려와 온 세상을 지으신 만물의 주이신 하나님을 영접하고 그분께 복종하게 하라.” 하나님의 자녀(이스라엘을 포함한 열방)이 그분의 길을 떠났고, 이제 모세의 위임은 아브라함의 씨, 이스라엘 자손을 내가 그들에게 준 땅으로 다시 데려오라는 것입니다. 모세가 주님께 한 대답은 ‘저 혼자서는 못합니다. 이것은 원 맨 쇼가 아닙니다! 저는 주님께서 저와 함께 계시면서 줄곧 저희를 인도하시고 도와주시고 안내해주시고 보호해주시고 고무시켜주심이 필요합니다.’였습니다. 주님께서는 시내광야에서 이스라엘 자손에 대해 정나미가 떨어지셨습니다. 그분께서는 그들이 금송아지를 만든 것이 못마땅하셨습니다. 그분께서는 그들의 불순종과 신실함이 부족한 것이 못마땅하셨습니다. 그분께서는 그들이 그들의 지도자를 대하는 태도가 못마땅하셨습니다. 그래서 지금 모세가 하나님께 “저희는 하나님께서 저희와 함께 계시면서 저희를 인도해주시고 저희에게 복 주시고 저희를 보호해주심이 필요합니다!” 말하고 있는 것입니다.

지금 우리 세계는 “코로나”(왕관)라는 이름이 붙여진 보이지 않는 적과 전쟁 중입니다. 어쩌면 주님께서 전 세계 그분의 교회에 말씀하고 계신 것일 것입니다. ‘너희는 진정 너희 삶 속에, 너희 교회에서 나를 왕으로 왕관 씌우고 싶지 않는구나. 여기에, 너희가 누가 진짜 너희 왕인지 깨달을 때까지, 그리고 너희가 개인으로서 공동체로서 내가 더 이상 속절없이 벌거벗은 채로 십자가에 달려있지 않다는 것을 깨달을 때까지, 너희가 다뤄야 할 또 다른 왕관이 있다. 지금 너희가 다뤄야 하는 왕관과 같이 너희가 다뤘어야 했을 다른 종류의 왕관의 진짜 실재하는 왕국을 다스리는 왕으로 나를 다윗의 보좌에 앉히라.’ 친애하는 형제님들, 여러분의 공동체(교회)와 여러분의 지도자를 위해 기도하시기 바랍니다. 성도 공동체의 목표는 목사나 지도자를 위한 지역 제국을 건설하는 것이나 교회 성장이 아닙니다. 하나님의 백성의 거룩한 공동체의 목표는 공동체 안을 섬기고, 도시와 나라와 가난한 사람들과 아픈 사람들과 과부와 고아를 섬기는 것입니다. 어둠 가운데 있는 세상을 섬기고 복음을 전하는 것이 하나님의 자녀들의 거룩한 공동체의 목표입니다. 물론, 신약성경의 모범에서처럼 예루살렘의 가난한 사람들은 우선순위에 있는데요, 특히 그들이 복음을 섬기고 예루살렘의 과부와 고아들을 돌본다면 더욱 그렇습니다. The Jerusalem Prayer List
April 10th, 2020
From the Home Quarantine in our home

The Torah and Prophets and New Testament readings for this Shabbat are: Shabbat of Passover: Exodus 33:12 - 34:26, Haftarah (from the prophets): Ezekiel 37:1 – 14: New Testament: Romans 9:14-29. This is a special reading for the Shabbat that falls during the Passover Feast.

We were just freed from a 48 hours total lockdown of the whole country of Israel. Today, Friday, April 10th, the population of Israel is able to go grocery shopping or to the pharmacy and even to drive to another city. From Sunday next week everyone has to wear a mask when he goes outside his home. We were fortunate that a dead sister from Hong Kong send us 200 masks for our congregation. Thank God for the brotherhood of the saints around the world. We are going to celebrate the Shabbat of this Passover, like the Shabbat last weekend through computer connection. Last week on Shabbat we used a program called Zoom, and we had brothers and sisters from several countries around the world join us in the worship. It is not easy and not simple, but we plan to try and do this again. I must say that this is first and for most for our local congregation and there is no translation to English. I am not sure what or how this is done, as they say in Georgia, “you can’t teach an old dog to do new tricks.” I suppose that at the age of 74, I ought to be considered an old dog, because I can’t keep up with the young leaders of Netivyah or even with my grandchildren on how to operate this new technology.

There are two things in this Torah reading that have confounded me. The Moses says to the LORD; Ex. 33:12, “Moses said to the LORD, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.””

Moses the supreme leader who delivered Israel from Egyptian slavery is commissioned by the Creator of the Universe to lead the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai to the Promised Land. A normal person of the statute of Moses would be so full of ego that he would jump at this commission from the Highest God. However, in this very point Moses is the same man that was years earlier in his first encounter with the LORD in front of the burning book on the slopes of Mt. Sinai. What Moses says to the LORD, “I can’t do it without your help, without you going with us on this journey. Each one of us is a leader in some respect in some place and in some season. However, a few leaders among those who lead people with authority understand that they can’t do it alone. That leading God’s people is a task for a team and not for the “lone-ranger,” Zorro, or Superman. Moses says to the Lord, “whom are you going to send with me!” Moses understands that the task is too much for one leader, even if his Moses, the Prince of Egypt, the chosen one by the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Here is our challenge as a congregation, and as an international ministry! We have a very high goal, a goal that we believe is given to us by the Almighty God Himself. I don’t mean personally given to me or to Netivyah like in a vision or experience like the burning bush. I received this goal and passed it on to Netivyah as a result of simple reading of God’s Word, on the pages of the Bible and also in fellowship with the LIVING WORD of God, Yeshua and His commission to all of His disciples. The commission of Yeshua is simple in the way that I understand it: Go and change the world with the Good News that I have given you! Bring the World (all the nations) to Zion, to accept and submit to the God who has created the whole world and is the LORD of all flesh. His children (all of the nations including Israel) have departed from His WAY and now the commission of Moses is to bring back the Seed of Abraham, the children of Israel back to the land that I have given them. Moses’ answer to the LORD is I can’t do it alone. This is not a one man show! I need you to be with me and lead, help, guide, protect, and inspire, us along the way. The Lord was tired of the children of Israel in the Sinai desert. He was not happy with them building the golden calf. He was not happy with their disobedience and their lack of faithfulness. He was not happy with the way that they treated their leadership. So, now Moses is telling God, “We need you to be with us, to lead us, to bless us, to protect us!

This lesson is simple. We must wake up and realize that we can’t take this journey alone. We are a team and even if in human terms I am alone physically I must know that I’ll never walk alone as long as I hold metaphorically the hand of Yeshua and He will walk with me. Just see this song that is also the hymn of the Liverpool soccer club, and even some Christian churches use it, so I would like to just remind you of this song that two Jews wrote: Rogers and Hammerstein. Please pay attention to the words of this song!

“When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm Is a golden sky And the sweet silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on walk on with hope in your heart And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone Walk on walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone.”

This ought to be our motto as disciples of Yeshua. We don’t want to every sin the big historical sin of Israel. The sin that the prophet Hosea is talking about: “Assyria shall not save us; we will not ride on horses; and we will say no more, ‘Our God,’ to the work of our hands.” (Hosea 14:3)

This lesson from the example of Moses in our Torah reading this Shabbat is of great importance to a community like ours in Jerusalem. The Jewish people who are born in Israel are called “Sabbra.” Sabbra is the Hebrew and Arabic word for what the in Texas and New Mexico is called “Prickly Pear.” “Sabbra” Jews are very different from the Older European Jews who were accustomed to live in a ghetto (a closed compound that the Jews were forced to live in during the Medieval period and they stayed there until the middle of the 19th century. Most Protestant Christian communities have adopted a mini-Imperial polity, the head pastor or the head preacher leadership. The biblical model of elders who are the true leaders of the community. Now days in many cases, not in all the cases and places, the role of the elders has been degraded to make the elders the “rubber stamp” for the Preacher/Pastor. In fact in many place the Pastor is the one who appoints the elders and he can also dismiss an elder that does not agree or votes against the Pastor’s wishes. Moses, the great shepherd of Israel during the 40 years of wilderness wondering in the Sinai, understood that He needs God to be with the camp of Israel and that he needs a team to work with him, but as far as we see in the text of the Torah, Moses was happy to allow the Lord to share with the 70 Elders of the tribes of Israel the spirit of Moses and take a part of the authority and attitude of Moses.

We can learn also the very personal closeness of Moses with the LORD. He could argue with him and bring logical arguments and like in our reading this Shabbat, Moses convinced the LORD not to abandon Israel and to have God’s Presence will go along and help lead the Israelites into the promised Land. Paul in the letter to 1 Corinthians give us an interesting midrash that answers who was the “Presence of the LORD” that followed with Israel during the wilderness wondering in Sinai. “For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and fall drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.” (1 Cor 10:1-4.) We see that in one way, or another Yeshua the Messiah was at least metaphorically there with the children of Israel in the wilderness. Remember dear brothers we should never take any major moves or steps in our lives alone. We need the LORD to be involved in our daily lives. The way we ought to do this is involve your close family and friends and the leaders in your community in your life and in major decisions that you face. Even more important talk to God Himself and as for guidance and wisdom. You are not alone if you are a disciple and follower of Yeshua. He said: “Behold I will be with you. . .!” If you give God, the impression that you don’t need Him in your daily life – believe me. God is busy enough even without you and He is not looking for spending time with people who act like they don’t need Him.

So, our world is in the battle with the invisible enemy that has been named “corona” – crown in English. May be the Lord is telling His church in the world. You don’t really want to crown me as King in your life, in your churches, here you have another crown to deal with until you learn who is your real King, and until you as individuals and your communities will realize that I am no longer on the cross helpless and naked. And put me on the throne of David as King over a true and real Kingdom, you might have to deal with other type of crowns like the one that you have to deal with now. Please dear brothers pray for your communities (Churches) and pray for your leadership. The goal of the community of the saints is not building local empires for the Pastors and Leaders and church growth. The goal of the Holy Communities of God’s people is to serve the inside of the community, and serve the city, the country, the poor, and sick and the widows and orphans. The service and the sharing of the Good News with the world that is in darkness is the goal of the Holy Community of God’s children. Of course as in the New Testament example, the poor of Jerusalem, are in a prime place especially if they serve the Good News and also care for the widows and orphans of Jerusalem. (a little pitch for Netivyah is not out of order in this case. We need the prayers and the financial support now as much as the saints in Jerusalem needed their brothers inCorinth, Rome, Achaia and Mackedonia.)

I need your prayers for my health. I thank God every day for His goodness and mercy and trust Him to restore my health so that I can continue to teach His Word. I need your prayers and Marcia needs your prayers. Danah our daughter needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. She is a wonderful young lady with many gifts, and challenges in life. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers.

Please keep Michelle O., in your prayers. Michelle is a young lady who has been diagnosed with Leukemia, and also has Kidney stones. She needs our prayers.

Mr. Shukrey Lawrence, who is suffering from cancer and needs our prayers for strength and healing. Shukery also needs prayer for his sons to mobilize and take better charge of his travel agency. He has served so many brothers and sisters for more than 40 years in organization of tour groups and special projects.

Nancy and Don Hook are back in Jerusalem and working. Praise the Lord for their recovery and return home, Rachel – Jingyung Lee is going throughout Chemotherapy, Hannah Yoshida from Koyto is dealing with a serious cancer and needs your special prayers, Tiz H., Lion H. are two heroes who are on the way to full recovery but please keep them in your prayers, Ilana Avrahamov is also getting treatment and on the way to recovery, Michael Shiffman’s mother, Ruby L. from Oklahoma City is struggling with cancer already for a long season. Please pray for her healing and remission.

Sister Angela from Taiwan is also going through the Chemotherapy treatments and I ask to lift sister Angela and her family before the throne of grace and healing. Now the Coronavirus has spread to more than 120 countries and it seems to be spreading inside these countries. Israel has the coronavirus and in the last week the numbers of people who have contracted the coronavirus has quadrupled and we already have 5 people dead. They are all older men and women and it is dangerous for people who have chronic illnesses. I was to go see a professor of Urology in the Hadassah hospital on Mt. Scopus. I called him to cancel the appointment because the government has made new rules that we can’t leave the house more then 100 meters. Like it was in China, in Wuhan and the province of Hubei. Now the Chinese government is easing the quarantine in China and in Wuhan. In Israel the government is making the quarantine more stringent. In Italy and France, the number of the dead is already in the thousands. Israel has sent airplanes to Peru to bail out 3000 young Israelis and bring them home. The flights were financed by donations and one flight only paid by the government. There is no other government in the world that has done this kind of service for its citizens. The same was done for Italy and Spain, and India, and Thailand, and next is Poland. As disciples of Yeshua we all ought to stand with Israel and the care that it gives for its citizens stranded in the wake of coronavirus all around the world.

The CDC has already declared this coronavirus as a worldwide plague. Let the world learn that the LORD God of Israel, and the FATHER of all that loved the world so much that He gave us His only begotten Son so that no one can parish, but all have everlasting life.

There is one more major prayer request for the State of Israel. The total mess that the Israeli government is in right now has never happened before. The chances for a unity government are becoming slimmer and slimmer from day to day. The two big political parties have lost their compass and can’t find a way to square the circle and form a government. It is truly a sad time for Israeli government and politicians on all fronts and party lines. We need your prayer for Israel and also for your own countries. It seems like this coronavirus has driven the world into a tailspin that is hard to get out from. The enmity and hate that is buzzing out of their mouths against the other side is so serious that I pray that God will not lose his patience with us as a nation. Leadership problems are considered by the 8th century B.C. prophets as a divine punishment. The rejection of the LORD’s authority and leaning on the arm of men is something that might be a divine punishment to our nation. I hope not and pray that it is not something that God has ordained upon us. I ask you to intercede for Israel and for the disciples of Yeshua in this land. We too must find ways to unite and to care and work with each other ignoring denominational lines and looking for a restoration of order and cooperation and unity that is absolutely necessary in such a time like this. We can’t shine light in the darkness without being a light in the body of the Messiah first. Our personal light is weak alone. If we unite our joint light will be a projector of a million wats and it will be seen over the whole land of Israel. This is my prayer for the body of the Messiah in Israel and around the world. I don’t believe that God will abandon us, but I do believe that we, and you and every friend that Israel has in the world must pray for this nation to wake up and see the enemies of Israel rejoicing at the sorry condition of our politicians. We don’t want to have a fourth round of elections in 2020.

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry. Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your very best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this!

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!

The spreading of Good News and good food to the needy of Jerusalem has never been so important as these days. Yudah and Daniel have said that over twenty years of feeding the needy of Jerusalem there has never been so many people and so much food with so much love and appreciation been given to the needy and to the older generation of the community. I don’t know how many tons of food has been given out in the last two weeks by Netivyah Hamotzi food program, but I know that it was many tons of everything, meat, chicken, fruit and vegetables, canned goods and dry goods. . .
