예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 8월 19일

이번 주 토라 포션은 신명기 21:10~25:19입니다. 이 토라 포션의 이름은 “키 테쩨”(“너희가 나갈 때에”)라고 합니다. 선지서에서 읽는 부분은 이사야 54:1-10, 신약성경에서 읽는 부분은 마태복음 5:27-30입니다.
이번에 읽는 모든 포션도 성경의 다른 모든 말씀처럼 내용이 풍부하고 중요합니다. 가장 중요한 것은 하나님의 말씀을 읽되 순서대로 규칙적으로 읽는 것입니다. 증오와 반-유대주의, 인종차별주의, 가족 내 가혹한 학대, 사람이 만들어 낼 수 있는 모든 인간존엄성 박탈에 대한 다른 해독제는 없습니다. 저는 종교 혹은 “특정교회 편향적 집착”에 대해 말씀드리는 것이 아닙니다. 저는 단순히 하나님의 말씀을 읽는 것에 대해 말씀드리는 것입니다. 유럽에서 가장 반-유대주의적이었던 나라 중 하나는 폴란드였고, 지금도 그렇습니다. 네, 예루살렘 야드 바쉠 홀로코스트 박물관에서 제2차 세계대전 때 “이방인 중의 의인들”이라고 기념되는 남녀의 대다수는 폴란드 출신입니다. 그들 대부분은 가톨릭 사제입니다. 이런 그룹의 의로운 사람들에 뚜렷이 두드러지는 점은 그들이 날마다 성경을 읽는 사람들이었다는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 다른 사람에 대한 인간의 잔인성에 대항하는 영적인 약, 비타민입니다. 하나님의 말씀을 읽으십시오. 유대 달력을 따라 성경을 읽으십시오. 이것은 여러분에게 좋은 것으로, 여러분의 삶 전반에, 특별히 여러분의 영적 삶에 건강이 됩니다. 20세기 우리의 현대적 사고방식에 가장 충격적인 하나님의 말씀 본문 중 하나는 이 본문입니다: “네가 나가서 적군과 싸울 때에 네 하나님 여호와께서 그들을 네 손에 넘기시므로 네가 그들을 사로잡은 후에 네가 만일 그 포로 중의 아리따운 여자를 보고 그에게 연연하여 아내를 삼고자 하거든 그를 네 집으로 데려갈 것이요 그는 그 머리를 밀고 손톱을 베고 또 포로의 의복을 벗고 네 집에 살며 그 부모를 위하여 한 달 동안 애곡한 후에 네가 그에게로 들어가서 그의 남편이 되고 그는 네 아내가 될 것이요.” – 신명기 21:10-13 이 본문 말씀은 처음 봤을 때 제게 혐오감을 주었습니다. 저는 천성적으로 평화주의자입니다. 저는 싸우는 걸 좋아하지 않고, 전쟁을 좋아하지 않고, 다른 인종이나 다른 피부색 사람들을 싫어하지 않습니다. 그런데 토라, 하나님의 말씀에 사람들이 전쟁에 나가 아리따운 여인을 보고 그녀를 데려와 … 이런 본문이 기록되어 있는 것을 보았을 때, 제 속이 뒤집혔습니다. 이것은 특별히 미국이 그렇게 갑작스럽게 아프가니스탄에서 철수한 이후인 요즈음 더 그렇습니다. 탈레반이 이슬람 샤리아법(중세 이슬람, 암흑시대 법률제도)을 그 나라의 법을 삼아 그에 따라 이슬람 칼리프를 세우려는 의도를 가지고 그 나라를 아주 빠르게 장악했습니다. 시리아와 이라크의 아이시스처럼 탈레반도 참수와 대량학살과 강간과 학대와 단지 몇 달러에 여성, 특히 야지디 여성, 아주 어린 소녀들까지 다른 이슬람 그룹에 성노예로 팔아버린 전적이 있습니다. 그때 저는 하나님의 말씀에서 아리따운 여인을 포로로 집으로 데려오는 것을 허용하는 것 같은 한 본문을 읽었습니다. 아무런 질문이 없습니다. “어리고 예쁜 소녀여, 그대는 결혼했는가? 그대는 약혼을 했는가? 가족은 있는가?” 같은 문제를 관심하지 않습니다. 21세기 우리 사고방식에는 야만적이고 잔혹해 보입니다. 그렇지만, 여기 이 토라 포션에서 하나님의 말씀이 우리에게 가르치는 것을 면밀히 살펴보도록 합시다. 첫째, 짐승처럼 굴지 말라! 당신은 율법에 따라 이 아리따운 여인이 당신의 아내, 법적으로 합법적인 아내가 되었으면 좋겠습니까? 이것은 당신의 선택지를 제한합니다. 당신은 그녀를 그냥 성노예로 데려온다거나, 매춘에 팔아버린다거나, 그녀를 성적으로 학대하거나 할 수 없습니다. 당신은 그녀를 법적인 아내로 데려와야 합니다. 그러므로 하나님의 말씀의 모든 율법은 이와 관련하여 적용됩니다. 그때 당신은 그녀를 여러분의 집으로 데려가야 합니다. 거기 당신의 집에서 그녀는 한 달 동안 그녀의 가족을 애도하는 것이 존중받고 허용됩니다. 당신은 이 30일 동안 그녀를 범하거나 욕보일 수 없습니다. 둘째, 당신의 가족도 있고 당신의 할머니도 계시는 당신의 집에서 이 여인이 애도하는 이 30일은 분명 당신의 욕정을 식혀줄 것입니다. 당신은 그녀의 머리를 밀고 손톱을 깎아 그녀의 아름다움을 어느 정도 없앴기에, 그것이 분명 당신으로 하여금 이 포로 여인을 당신의 집에서 성적으로 학대하는 것에 대해 다시 생각하게 만들 것입니다. 셋째, 이 토라는 말합니다: “…(그런) 후에 네가 그에게로 들어가서 그의 남편이 되고 그는 네 아내가 될 것이요.” 당신은 당신의 집에서 30일 동안 이 포로 여인과 살았고 당신은 그녀를 육체적으로 범하지 않았습니다. “그런 후에” 당신이 여전히 이 여인을 원한다면, 당신이 그녀를 가질 수 있는 단 한 가지 방법은 그녀를 법적으로 합법적인 아내를 삼는 것입니다. 유대사회에서 그것은 당신이 그녀에게 모든 권리와 특권을 서면으로 약속해준다는 뜻입니다: 일종의 이혼각서, 케투바, 만약 당신이 그녀와 이혼한다면 당신이 그녀에게 주어야하는 값을 담은 의무 계약입니다. 아이시스나 탈레반의 이슬람 야만인들이 행하는 짓은 완전히 다른 류의, 짐승 같은 행동입니다: 강간, 노예화, 육적 정신적 학대, 영적 학대, 고문. 수천 년 전 문서인 토라, 하나님의 말씀이 그렇게 이스라엘 남자의 행동을 조절하게 하고 도덕적으로 자제하게 만들었다고 생각하니, 그 당시와 그 지역의 문화를 고려할 때 그런 배려는 존경해 마지않을 수 없습니다. 이번 주 토라 포션에서 그 다음으로 규율하는 큰 율법은 상속법입니다. 야곱이나 사무엘상 첫 부분에 나오는 한나의 남편 엘가나처럼 사람이 두 여인과 결혼하여 아내가 두 명인 경우, 그는 누굴 편애하여 상속법을 무시할 수 없습니다. 그는, 자기의 장자를 좋아하지 않고 다른 아내의 아들을 더 좋아할지라도, 그의 재산의 절반을 그의 장자에게 남겨야 합니다. 이것은 수천 년 전에 기록된 것인데요, 사람이 옳고, 의롭고, 질서 있는 일을 하도록 강제함으로써 사람의 욕망과 선택을 규율하고 있습니다. 이 율례들은 우리 인간에게 있어 아주 중요하고 기본적인 것을 우리에게 말해주고 있습니다. 이것은 우리에게 너는 네가 원하는 것을 하면서 의롭고 합법적인 사회의 규율과 법을 어길 수 없다고 말해주고 있습니다. 당신이 누구든 상관없이, 왕이든, 광대든, 당신은 당신의 동포와 당신의 가족에 대한 의무가 있습니다. 그리고 당신은 당신 옆집 이웃뿐만 아니라 당신 가족 구성원도 존중하여 그들을 옳게 대해야 합니다. 여러분은 오늘날 선택의 자유라는 이름으로 아버지가 그의 유산을 자기 가족에게 주지 않아도 된다는 것을 압니다. 서구에서는 아주 부자인 사람이 자기 재산을 자기의 법적 아내가 아닌 자기 정부, 애인에게 남긴 사례가 있습니다. 이것이 토라의 중요성입니다. 이것은 제 정신이고 공정한 사회를 참작한 하나님의 계시입니다. 네, 신약성경 역시 우리에게 토라가 공정하고, 영적이고, 의롭다고 말해줍니다. 스스로 하나님의 말씀을 읽지 않는 많은 그리스도인들은, 3, 4세기 교부시대부터 비롯된, 토라는 끝났고 의롭지 않다, 토라에는 사랑이나 은혜는 없고 단지 가혹한 판결뿐이라는 인상을 갖고 있습니다. 그러나 친애하는 형제자매님들, 이 문제에 대하여 사도 바울의 말이 있습니다: “이로 보건대 율법은 거룩하고 계명도 거룩하고 의로우며 선하도다 그런즉 선한 것이 내게 사망이 되었느냐 그럴 수 없느니라 오직 죄가 죄로 드러나기 위하여 선한 그것으로 말미암아 나를 죽게 만들었으니 이는 계명으로 말미암아 죄로 심히 죄 되게 하려 함이라 우리가 율법은 신령한 줄 알거니와 나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래에 팔렸도다.” – 로마서 7:12-14 죄의 문제는 토라 때문이 아닙니다. 바울은 이것을 분명하고 확실하게 말합니다: “나는 육신에 속하여 죄 아래에 팔렸도다!” 문제는 하나님의 말씀, 혹은 토라에 있지 않고, “죄 아래에 팔린”, 즉 우리가 한 선택에 의해, 우리의 통제되지 않는 기호에 의해 죄에 노예된 우리 사람에게 있습니다. 토라 때문이 아니라 우리의 선택에 의해 죄가 우리 삶에 들어오는 것입니다. 토라는 우리로 하여금 깨닫고 회개하도록 그것이 우리 안에서 보는 죄를 반영하는 거울입니다. 우리는 큰 절기 – 로쉬 하샤나(유대 새해), 그 10일 후 욤 키푸르(속죄일), 그 나흘 후 숙콧(초막절) - 에 가까워지고 있습니다. 이 절기들은 예슈아와 그분의 모든 제자들이 기념하고, 존중하고, 온 이스라엘과 다함께 기뻐한 바로 그 절기들입니다. 앞에 그리고 매주 제 예루살렘 기도 목록에 나열된 토라 포션과 선지서 포션과 신약성경 포션을 모두 읽으시기 바랍니다. 이번 주에 특히 중요한 것은 이사야 54:1-10 포션입니다. 여러분의 흥미를 좀 자극하기 위해 이사야 54:1-3에서 두 구절입니다: “잉태하지 못하며 출산하지 못한 너는 노래할지어다 산고를 겪지 못한 너는 외쳐 노래할지어다 이는 홀로 된 여인의 자식이 남편 있는 자의 자식보다 많음이라 여호와께서 말씀하셨느니라 네 장막터를 넓히며 네 처소의 휘장을 아끼지 말고 널리 펴되 너의 줄을 길게 하며 너의 말뚝을 견고히 할지어다 이는 네가 좌우로 퍼지며 네 자손은 열방을 얻으며 황폐한 성읍들을 사람 살 곳이 되게 할 것임이라.” – 이사야 54:1–3 예루살렘과 이스라엘 백성에게 주신 얼마나 멋진 하나님의 약속인지요! 수 세기 동안 유대인들은 이 말씀을 읽으며 유럽과 예멘과 심지어 아시아 깊숙한 곳에서 2등 혹은 3등 시민으로 깊은 어둠의 디아스포라의 삶을 살았습니다. 지평선에 희망의 빛줄기는 한 줄기도 보이지 않았습니다. 그들은 하나님의 말씀을 열고 이사야의 이 말씀을 읽었습니다. 그들이 말씀을 들을 때 한 줄기 소망과 믿음과 기쁨이 그들을 감쌌고, 그들의 심령은 미움과 배척의 멍에 아래 계속 살아갈 힘을 얻어, 그들은 적대적인 환경 아래서 살아남을 수 있게 해주는 새로운 힘으로 그들의 피곤을 이기고 살아남을 수 있었습니다. 그들은 나라도 없고, 정부도 없고, 국기(國旗)도, 그들만의 화폐도, 국가(國歌)도 없었습니다. 그들에게는 그들에게 새로 태어남과, 유대인 자녀를 낳게 될 것과, 그들 민족의 고향 이스라엘 땅의 재건을 약속하는 이사야 선지자의 예언이 있었습니다. 그리고 이것 이상으로 이사야는 열방이 이스라엘 자손을 데려다줄 것이며, 그들이 이스라엘의 유업이 될 것이라고 약속하고 있습니다. 스가랴 14장과 이사야 66장과 그 외 많은 말씀에 따르면, 열방이 예루살렘에서 예배하기 위해 올 것입니다. 오늘날 이스라엘에 살고 있는, 메시아 예슈아의 제자들인 우리는 기뻐하고 강할 큰 이유가 있습니다. 이 약속들을 현실로 만들 촉매제, 동기를 부여하는 존재, 길과 진리요 생명은 오직 한 유대인, 하나님의 아들, 유대인의 왕, 메시아 예슈아입니다!
미군이 아프가니스탄을 떠나고 탈레반이 지금 카불에 들어가 아프가니스탄을 장악했습니다. 우리는 아프간 사람들을 위해서, 특별히 아프가니스탄에 살고 있는 수만 명의 기독교인들을 위해 기도해야 합니다.
탈레반은 이라크와 시리아에 있는 아이시스와 마찬가지로 채식주의자들이 아닙니다. 그들은 동족을 대하는 데에서도 끔찍하게 잔인하고 가학적인데 기독교인들에 대해서는 훨씬 더합니다.
우리는 지금 인간성 결핍자들의 수중에 놓인 우리 형제자매들을 위해 기도해야 합니다. 이슬람법 집행은 매우 가혹하고 살인적일 수 있습니다.
그 나라에 있는 기독교인들은 그들의 목숨과 존엄과 자유가 진짜 위험한 상황에 빠져 있습니다. 아프가니스탄과 그 나라의 모든 국민과 가난하고 도덕성을 상실한 그 나라에 남아 있는 기독교인들을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.
미국을 위해서도 기도해 주십시오. 온 땅을 심판하시는 분이신 주님께서는 사람이든 나라든 봐주시는 분이 아니십니다. 그분께서는 이스라엘을 아끼지 아니하시고 2,000년이나 내쫓아 벌하셨습니다. 20세기에 들어선 이제야 추방이 끝났고, 지금 하나님의 은혜가 온 세상에 드러나고 있습니다.
저희의 귀한 친구 마흐무드의 누이 구즐란이 매우 아파서 저는 여러분께 구즐란을 위해 기도해 주시기를, 또한 몇 주 안에 불가리아에서 결혼할 마흐무드의 딸 마리아를 위해서도 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

여러분의 기도에 이스라엘 정부를 기억해 주십시오. 코로나바이러스가 이스라엘에서 다시 창궐하며 새로운 변이가 전국에 걸쳐 확산되고 있습니다. 사람들은 3차 백신을 맞고 있지만, 상황이 진정되는 데는 몇 주 걸릴 것입니다.
우리는 모두 주님께서 이 전염병을 멈춰주시도록 기도해야 합니다. 그리고 우선 무엇보다 하나님과 그분의 율법과 규례를 아는 유대인과 기독교인들이 기도하고 회개하고 주님을 구하고 긍휼을 간구하며, 우리가 성경에서 읽는 다른 모든 전염병에 대해 주님께서 하셨던 것처럼 이 전염병을 멈춰주시기를 구해야 합니다.
주님께서 그렇게 하실 수 있으시니, 우리는 하나님께 그분의 세상에 대한 긍휼을 베풀어주시도록 중보하며 간구해야 합니다. 이런 일은 오직 기독교인들과 유대인들의 지도자들이 죄를 고백하고 회개할 때에만 일어날 수 있습니다.
유대인들에게 이 일이 속죄일, 욤 키푸르 어간에 있을 것입니다. 이 날이 목전에 다가왔습니다. 유대인들의 매우 높은 비율이 금식하며 이 금식일을 지키며 죄를 고백하고 회개합니다.
아주 힘든 이 때에 네티비야를 위해, 이스라엘 사람들에게 선을 행하며 그들을 축복하고 먹이고 지지해줄 기회를 위해 기도하고 후원해 주십시오. 이스라엘에서 이 어려운 시절에 어려움에 처한 이들의 수가 몇 배로 늘었습니다.
네티비야는 시간과 돈이 드는 많은 일과 도전들과, 하나님께서 네티비야 앞에 두시는 필요들과 기회들을 감당할 수 있는 스텝이 더 필요합니다.
코로나바이러스가 전 세계적으로, 그리고 이스라엘에서도 다시 창궐하면서 새로운 봉쇄 위협이 생기고 있기에 이스라엘은 더 기도가 필요하고 네티비야도 여러분의 기도와 후원이 필요합니다. 저희는 예슈아의 유대인 및 아랍인 제자들이 대학교에서 수학할 수 있게 하는 장학금을 줄이지 않으려고 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 저희는 저희 차세대 제자들의 기준을 세우는 것이 최우선이라고 믿습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – August 19, 2021

The Torah reading is from Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19. The name of this portion of the Torah is called “Ki Teitzei” (“when you go out”). The portion for reading from the prophets is from Isaiah 54:1-10, and from the New Testament from Matthew 5:27-30.
All of these readings like every word from the Bible is rich and important. The most important thing is to read the word of God and to read it in order and regularly. There is no antidote against hate and anti-Semitism, racism, horrible abuse in families and every other depravity that humans can invent. I am not talking about religion or “churchianity”. I am talking about the simple reading of God’s word. One of the most anti-Semitic countries in Europe was, and still is, Poland. Yes, during World War II, the largest number of men and women who are commemorated in the Yad VaShem Museum of the Holocaust in Jerusalem who are called “Righteous Among the Gentiles” are from Poland. Most of them are Catholic clergy. What distinguishes this group of righteous people is that they were daily Bible readers. The word of God is a spiritual medical vitamin against the bestiality of humans against other humans. Read the word of God. Follow the Jewish calendar of reading the Bible. It is something good for you and healthy for your life in general, and especially for your spiritual life. One of the most shocking texts for our 20th Century modern mindset is this text from the word of God: “When you go out to war against your enemies, and the Lord your God delivers them into your hand, and you take them captive, and you see among the captives a beautiful woman, and desire her and would take her for your wife, then you shall bring her home to your house, and she shall shave her head and trim her nails. She shall put off the clothes of her captivity, remain in your house, and mourn her father and her mother a full month; after that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.” – Deuteronomy 21:10-13 [NKJV] At first sight, this text gives me the heebie jeebies. I am by nature a peace lover. I don’t like to fight, I don’t like war, I don’t hate people from other races or colors. And when the Torah, the Word of God, writes such a text that allowed people going to war to see a beautiful woman, and take her… It makes my stomach turn and tumble… This is especially true now days, after the USA has pulled out of Afghanistan in such a sudden way. The Taliban have taken the country so quickly, with the intent of establishing an Islamic Caliphate under the Islamic Sharia law (medieval Islamic, dark-ages legal system) as the law of the land. The Taliban has a record, like that of Isis in Syria and Iraq, of beheadings, mass murders, rape, and abuse, and of selling the captive women to other Islamic groups – especially the Yazidi women, even very young girls – into sex slavery for a handful of dollars. Then I read a text in God’s word that seems to allow taking a captive beautiful woman to your home, no questions asked. No concern like, “Young beautiful girl, are you married? Are you engaged, do you have a family?” It seems barbaric and horrible to our 21st Century mentality. However, let us look closely at what the word of God is teaching us here in this portion of the Torah. First, don’t act like a beast! You would like this beautiful woman to be your wife, your legal and proper wife, according to the Law? This limits your options. You can’t just take her as a sex slave, or sell her into prostitution, or abuse her. You have to take her as your legal wife, and therefore all the laws of the word of God apply in this relationship. Then you have to take her to your home. There in your home she will be respected and allowed to mourn for her family for one month. You can’t touch her or dishonor her during these 30 days. Second, the 30 days of mourning of this woman in your home, with your family there and your grandmother there, will definitely cool down your desires. You have shaved her hair and cut her nails and have taken some of her beauty off, that definitely will make you think twice about abusing this captive woman in your house. Third, the Torah says: “…after that you may go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.” You now have lived with this captive woman 30 days in your house and you have not touched her physically. “After that”, if you still want this woman, the only way that you can have her is make her your legal and lawful wife. In the Jewish world, that means that you give her all the rights and privileges committed to in writing; a document of divorcement, a Ketubah, a contract of obligation including a price that you would have to pay her if you divorce her. What the Islamic barbarians of Isis and the Taliban are doing is a totally different behavior, animal behavior. Rape, slavery, and abuse, both physical and mental, and spiritual abuse, and torture. Thinking of a document that is thousands of years old, the Torah, God’s word, making such adjustments in the behavior and moral restraint of an Israelite man is nothing but admirable considering the time and the culture of the times and of the place. The next big law that the Torah regulates in our portion of the Torah is the law of inheritance. If a person is married to two wives – like Jacob and Elkanah, the husband of Hannah, from the first chapters of the book of First Samuel – he can’t be partial and ignore the laws of inheritance. He must leave 50 percent of his property to his first born son, even if he doesn’t like that son, and likes the son of his other wife more. This was written thousands of years ago and it regulates the desire and choice of a person by forcing the person to do what is right, just, and orderly. These rules tell us something very important and basic about us, human beings. It tells us, you can’t do what you want to and break the rules and the laws of a just and proper society. No matter who you are, a king, or a clown, you have some obligations toward your fellow man and your family. And you must honor the members of your family as well as your neighbor next door, and treat them right. You know that today, in the name of freedom of choice, a father doesn’t have to give his inheritance to his family. There are cases in the West of very rich men who left their wealth to their mistresses and lovers, and not to their legal wives. This is the importance of the Torah, it is God’s revelation, allowing for a sane and righteous society. Yes, the New Testament also tells us that the Torah is righteous, spiritual, and just. Many Christians, who don’t read the word of God for themselves, are under the impression, from the Christian Church Fathers of the Third and Fourth Centuries, that the Torah is over and unjust. And there is no love or grace in the Torah, just harsh judgment. But, dear brothers and sisters, here are the words of the apostle Paul on this issue: “Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.” – Romans 7:12-14 [NKJV] The problem of sin is not because of the Torah, Paul states it clear and sound: “I am carnal and sold under sin!” The problem is not with God’s word, or the Torah, it is with we humans who are “sold under sin”, enslaved to sin, by choices that we make, by our out-of-control appetites. Sin comes into our lives by our choices, not because of the Torah. The Torah is a mirror that reflects the sins it sees in us to make us aware and repent. We are approaching the High Holidays – Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), and 10 days later Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), and four days later the feast of Sukkoth (the Feast of Tabernacles). These holidays are the same ones that Yeshua and all of his apostles celebrated, honored, and rejoiced in, together with all of Israel. Please read the whole Torah portion, and the prophets and the New Testament text that is listed above and in every one of my Jerusalem Prayer Lists, each week. This week especially is important, the reading of Isaiah 54:1-10. Just to whet your appetite here are two of the verses from Isaiah 54:1-3: “‘Sing, O barren, You who have not borne! Break forth into singing, and cry aloud, You who have not labored with child! For more are the children of the desolate Than the children of the married woman,’ says the Lord. ‘Enlarge the place of your tent, And let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; Do not spare; Lengthen your cords, And strengthen your stakes. For you shall expand to the right and to the left, And your descendants will inherit the nations, And make the desolate cities inhabited.’” – Isaiah 54:1–3 [NKJV] What a wonderful promise from God to Jerusalem and to the people of Israel! For centuries, the Jewish people read this text and they were in the deep dark diaspora living as second- and third-class citizens in Europe and Yemen, and even deep in Asia. There was no ray of hope to be seen on the horizon. They opened the word of God and read these words of Isaiah. A ray of hope and faith and joy enveloped them as they listened, and their souls gained the strength to continue living under the yoke of hate and rejection, and they were able to survive as new strength overcame their fatigue, allowing them to survive under hostile conditions. They didn’t have a country, they didn’t have a government, they didn’t have a flag, or their own currency, or a national anthem. They had the prophet Isaiah promising them a rebirth and a birth of Jewish children, and a rebuilding of their national home, the land of Israel. And beyond this, Isaiah promises that the nations will deliver the descendants of Israel, and they will become the inheritance of Israel. The nations will come to worship in Jerusalem according to the 14th chapter of Zechariah and the 66th chapter of Isaiah, and much more. For us today, the disciples of Yeshua the Messiah, living in Israel, there is a great reason to rejoice and to be strong. The catalyst, and the motivator, and the Way, the Truth, and the Life that will make these promises a reality is only one Jew – Yeshua the Messiah – and the son of God, king of the Jews!
The United States military forces has left Afghanistan and the Taliban is now in Kabul, and in control of Afghanistan. We must pray for the Afghans and especially the tens of thousands of Christians who live in Afghanistan.
The Taliban, like Isis in Iraq and Syria, are not vegetarians. They are horribly cruel and sadistic in the way they treat their own people and even more so toward Christians.
We must pray for our brothers and sisters who are now under the mercy of human deprivation. The enforcing of Islamic law can be very harsh and murderous.
Christians in that country are in real and present danger for their lives, their dignity and freedom. Please pray for Afghanistan and all of its citizens and for the Christians in that poor and morally depraved country.
Also pray for the USA. The Lord, who is the judge of all of the Earth, is not a respecter of persons, nor of countries. He didn’t spare Israel but exiled and punished Israel for 2000 years… Only now, starting in the 20th Century, did the exile end, and God’s grace is now being revealed to the whole world.
Our dear friend Mahmud Abu-Eid’s sister Gouzlan is very sick, and I ask you to pray for Gouzlan and for Maria Mahmud’s daughter who is getting married in Bulgaria in a few weeks.
Please keep praying for Rebekka Becker’s mother and brother. Pray for a dear sister in Brazil, Artuza de Oliveira. Pray for a very dear family who now lives in Canada, Merv and Merla Watson. They are older and need a good portion of God’s grace for their lives now.
Keep the Israeli government in your prayers. The coronavirus is again raging in our land and the new mutations are spreading throughout the land. People are getting vaccinated with the third vaccine shot, but it will take some weeks for the situation to stabilize.
We must all pray that the Lord will stop this plague, and that first and foremost the Jews and the Christians who ought to know God and His laws and regulations must pray and repent and seek the Lord and beg for mercy, and ask the Lord to stop this plague, like He did every other plague that we read about in the Bible.
He can do it, and we must intercede and beg for God’s mercy over His world. This can only happen if the leadership of both Christians and Jews take to confession and repentance.
For the Jews this might be just around the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, that is just around the corner. And a very high percentage of the Jewish people fast and observe the fasting day and confess sins and seek repentance.
Pray and support Netivyah during these very hard times, for opportunities to do good and to bless and feed and support the population of Israel, those in need whose number has increased by many percentage points during these difficult days in Israel.
The needs of Netivyah for more staff to be able to keep up with the amount of work and the challenges that take both time and money, and to keep up with the needs and the opportunities that God is putting in front of Netivyah.
With the coronavirus raging wild throughout the world, and in Israel, and with the threat of a new closure, Israel needs much prayer, and Netivyah needs your prayers and your support. We are doing our best not to cut the scholarship funds to Jewish and Arab disciples of Yeshua for study in the universities. We believe that building up the standard of our next generation of disciples is a priority.
We will have to cut more than 50 percent of the support for students for this next year’s academic year if the Lord does not use some of our brothers and sisters to help with this project. Netivyah has never gone into financial debt in 40 years of ministry, and we have no plan to go into debt for any project and not even this important investment in the future of the believers in Israel.
We have many dear brothers and sisters in both India and Brazil who are still very much in serious trouble with the coronavirus situation and need our prayers. We need to continue to pray for India and Brazil and especially for our dear brothers and sisters in these two countries.
I received a special prayer request from our dear brother Isaac in Chennai, India. Brother Isaac asked us to pray especially for sister Sheela Stephen.

Our goal is to simply bless the needy of Jerusalem and make sure that those families with many children and old people, and single mothers, and others, both Jews and a few Arab families, have something fresh and good and healthy to eat. We have brothers and sisters in Israel and in China and I ask you to pray for their safety and protection: Deborah Ruth, Lydia, Sima, Laurel S., Naomi, Orna, David S., Daniel, Dalia D., Ayla, Hillel, Elhanan, Tony, Dr. Song, and his wife Sister Harriet Kim, Michael Knezevich, Ismael Alves, Asher Gabriel, M. Ahuva. Please pray for a dear brother who is well into his 90’s and lost his wife a couple of weeks ago. His name is Dov H. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.
From our congregation in Jerusalem, we ask you to join us in prayer for the following dear brothers and sisters: Gary, Melanie, Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby.
Pray for some dear friends, Rabbi Salt, and his family and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

Please pray for our two grandchildren. They are both graduating in a few weeks from high school. They are both facing this important change in their lives. Noam our granddaughter also had her 18th birthday on May 1st. This was a very big day for Noam. She is free from high school and also from other obligations and is privileged to make her own decisions and choices in life. Pray for Noam on this major crossroad of life for her and ask the Lord to bless Noam and to give her clear direction and guidance for what is good and right and holy in her life.
Both Noam and Joseph, our two grandchildren, are extremely talented and good students. Both are “A” students and excellent young people, but both need divine protection and guidance to make good and smart and right choices for life.
When I was 18 years old and cut off from my family because of my faith in the Messiah, I had no one on my side and no one to guide me. The Lord’s providential leading and guidance was the only guide that I had. I praise the Lord for His goodness and direction in my life.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
