예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2022년 1월 13일

이스라엘 자손이 애굽에서 나와 마침내 애굽과 종살이에서 해방되었습니다. 이번 안식일 토라 포션은 출애굽기 13:17~17:16입니다. 이번 주에 읽는 부분에는 성경 역사에서 가장 중요한 순간들 중 몇몇 장면, 홍해 갈대바다를 건너는 사건과 모세의 노래가 포함되어 있습니다.

주님께서 기적적으로 종살이에서 해방된 히브리 종들을 먹이시기 위해 처음으로 하늘로부터 만나를 보내십니다. 선지서에서 읽는 부분, 하프타라는 사사기 4:4-5:31입니다. 이번 토라 포션 하프타라에는 성경에서 두 번째로 중요한 승리의 노래, 드보라의 노래가 있습니다.

신약성경에서는 요한복음 6:15-71과 고린도전서 10:1-5를 읽습니다. 이들 본문은 모두 히브리/유대적 주된 정서를 다루고 있습니다: 저희에게는 역사적으로 저희를 없애버리고 싶어하는 원수가 있어, 하나님께 기도하면 주께서 우리를 구해 주십니다!

이번 토라 포션은 히브리어로 “베샬락”이라고 부릅니다. “베샬락”을 번역하면 “그가 그들을 가게 했다!”입니다. 출애굽기 13:17-18의 이 문구는 흥미롭습니다:

“바로가 백성을 보낸 후에 블레셋 사람의 땅의 길은 가까울지라도 하나님이 그들을 그 길로 인도하지 아니하셨으니 이는 하나님이 말씀하시기를 이 백성이 전쟁을 하게 되면 마음을 돌이켜 애굽으로 돌아갈까 하셨음이라 그러므로 하나님이 홍해의 광야 길로 돌려 백성을 인도하시매 이스라엘 자손이 애굽 땅에서 대열을 지어 나올 때에” – 출애굽기 13:17,18

토라는 단도직입적으로 우리에게 이스라엘 백성의 지도자는 사실 모세가 아니라 하나님이시라는 것을 밝힙니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 백성이 지름길인 지중해 해변길, 블레셋의 길로 가지 않을 것이라고 결정하셨습니다. 이 본문은 우리에게 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손을 지름길로 인도하시지 않은 이유를 알려줍니다: 하나님께서는 이스라엘 자손이 애굽 군대의 요새로 가득하고 매우 호전적인 용사들인 블레셋이 있는 지름길로 가면, 이스라엘 자손이 애굽으로 돌아가고 싶어할까 우려하셨습니다.

우리는 이 본문에서 하나님께서 이스라엘 자손의 체력과 헌신에 관심을 갖고 계시며 이스라엘 자손이 돌이켜 애굽으로 돌아가 종살이 하는 것을 방지하기 위해 예방 조치를 취하셨다는 것을 배웁니다. 이것은 이 세상의 창조주께서 사람의 눈에 보이는 일반적인 논리와 반대되게 적용하시는 매우 흥미로운 원리를 배울 수 있는 흥미로운 사건입니다:

1. 여러분은 수백 년의 노예 생활 끝에 애굽을 막 떠났습니다. 여러분은 마침내 해방되었습니다! 여러분은 가능한 한 빨리 여러분을 쫓고 있는 애굽인들에게서 벗어나고 싶습니다. 여러분이 여러분을 사랑하시는 하나님께 마지막으로 바라는 것은 기러기 몰이로 여러분을 보내는 것입니다. 애굽에서 가나안 땅까지 11일간의 여정 대신에 하나님께서는 여러분으로 하여금 세계에서 가장 가혹한 광야 중 한 곳에서 40년 방랑 생활로 지체하며 걸어가며 생존하게 하십니다.

2. 여러분의 하나님 곧 여러분의 조상 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 하나님께서 전능하시며 열 가지 재앙으로 애굽 위에 능력을 보이셨음을 알기에, 여러분이 기대하는 바는 하나님께서 애굽 군대를 멸하시고 가능한 한 빠른 시간 안에 여러분을 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 약속된 땅으로 이끄시는 것일 것입니다. 우리의 문제 중 하나는 우리가 매우 근시안적이며 시야가 좁고 매우 이기적 성향이라는 것입니다.

우리의 문제는 우리가 “하나님을 믿는 믿음”이라고 말할 때 사실 우리가 하나님에 대한 교리를 믿는 믿음을 가지고 있다는 뜻이라는 것입니다. 이것은 유대인, 기독교인, 이슬람교도, 불교도 등 대부분의 종교인에게 해당됩니다. 혹은 대부분의 종교인이 이 문제를 가지고 있습니다.

우리는 하나님에 대한 교리와 우리 교회와 회당에 대한 교의를 믿는 것입니다! 우리의 종교적 전통은 얼굴을 가리는 마스크와 같은 것이지만, 그 마스크는 우리의 입과 코를 가리는 것이 아니라 우리의 눈을 가리고 있습니다.

우리 눈을 가리고 있는 이 마스크는, 종교는 너무 많고 믿음과 이 세상을 처음부터 끝까지 창조하신 전능하신 하나님과의 인격적 관계는 너무 적은 마스크입니다. 우리 모두는 이스라엘의 전능하신 하나님과 인격적 관계를 맺을 직통 길을 찾아야 합니다.

여러분은 저에게 물어볼 것입니다: 어떻게 그리 하는 것입니까? 사람이 어떻게 하나님과 그러한 관계를 맺을 수 있습니까?

제 대답은 선지자 예레미야의 말씀에서 나옵니다:

“여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 무릇 사람을 믿으며 육신으로 그의 힘을 삼고 마음이 여호와에게서 떠난 그 사람은 저주를 받을 것이라 그는 사막의 떨기나무 같아서 좋은 일이 오는 것을 보지 못하고 광야 간조한 곳, 건건한 땅, 사람이 살지 않는 땅에 살리라 그러나 무릇 여호와를 의지하며 여호와를 의뢰하는 그 사람은 복을 받을 것이라 그는 물 가에 심어진 나무가 그 뿌리를 강변에 뻗치고 더위가 올지라도 두려워하지 아니하며 그 잎이 청청하며 가무는 해에도 걱정이 없고 결실이 그치지 아니함 같으리라 만물보다 거짓되고 심히 부패한 것은 마음이라 누가 능히 이를 알리요마는” – 예레미야 17:5-9

여호와께서 선지자 예레미야에게 사람을 신뢰하지 말며 그의 마음이 하나님에게서 떠나지 말라고 말씀하셨을 때, 전능하신 그분께서는 목사와 교황, 설교자와 목사부터 모든 부류, 크기, 피부색, 성별 선호를 가진 감독과 랍비에 이르기까지 모든 사람을 포함하시는 것입니다. 우리가 먼저 모든 인류의 아버지이신 창조주(창세기부터 요한계시록까지 그분의 말씀)를 신뢰할 때만, 우리는 이 아래 지구상에서 하나님의 대표자라고 주장하는 동료 사람들에게 어느 정도 제한된 신뢰를 주기 시작할 수 있을 것입니다.

예레미야는 우리 자신의 마음조차도 신뢰해서는 안 된다고 분명히 말합니다. 이것은 우리의 가장 큰 속임수 중 어떤 것들은 이기적인 야망과 우리가 똑똑하고 매우 재능이 있다고 믿는 그릇된 확신으로 가득 찬 마음에서 비롯되기 때문입니다.

주님께서 이스라엘 자녀들에게 취하신 이 접근법에서 제가 배우는 교훈은 하나님께서는 언제나 우리에게 가장 좋은 것이 무엇인지 아신다는 것입니다! 가장 빠른 방법으로 일을 하는 것이 언제나 가장 현명한 선택인 것만은 아닙니다. 때로는 천천히 조리된 것이 즉석에서 바로 먹을 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 맛있습니다.

이 본문에서 배우는 두 번째 교훈은 우리가 하나님의 조언과 지시가 논리적이지 않다고 생각할 때에도 하나님을 신뢰하는 것이 여전히 가장 현명한 일이라는 것입니다!

이 본문에서 제가 배우는 세 번째 교훈은 전능자와 진짜 참된 관계를 갖는 유일한 방법은 그분과 시간을 보내는 것이라는 것입니다. 이것이 어렵거나 불가능하게 들릴지 모르지만 실제로는 사도 바울이 아테네 사람들에게 말한 바와 같습니다:

“이는 사람으로 혹 하나님을 더듬어 찾아 발견하게 하려 하심이로되 그는 우리 각 사람에게서 멀리 계시지 아니하도다.” – 사도행전 17:27

우리 모두는 책으로 기록된 하나님의 말씀도 가지고 있고, 살아 있는 하나님의 말씀인 예슈아도 가지고 있어 우리가 사용할 수 있습니다. 기록된 하나님의 말씀과 함께 시간을 보내고 그분과 그분의 말씀을 묵상하며, 말씀을 듣는 사람이 되고자 하는 열망과 의도뿐만 아니라 말씀을 지키려는 진실한 열망이 있으면, 우리가 예슈아와 함께 정결케 되는 물(세례)로 죽고 새 생명으로 일으키심을 받았을 때 우리를 충만케 하신 성령을 통해 우리를 창조주 하나님과 매우 확실한 관계에 이르게 할 것입니다.

모세에게 홍해 물에 발을 담그고 나무 지팡이를 들어 물을 물러나게 하고 이스라엘 자손으로 하여금 마른 땅으로 건너도록 한 그 믿음을 모세에게 준 것은 바로 하나님을 믿는 믿음입니다.

모세의 노래 역시 홍해를 마른 땅으로 건넜던 세대뿐 아니라 저와 우리 모두에게도 아주 아주 중요합니다. 우리가 이 노래를 알고 히브리어로 암송하는 것이 더더욱 중요한 이유는 우리가 영원한 보좌 앞에 서고 하나님의 어린 양이 그 위에 앉으시고 온 인류의 큰 무리가 노래하기 시작할 때, 모세의 노래를 부를 것이기 때문입니다.

본문 말씀은 다음과 같습니다:

“또 내가 보니 불이 섞인 유리 바다 같은 것이 있고 짐승과 그의 우상과 그의 이름의 수를 이기고 벗어난 자들이 유리 바다 가에 서서 하나님의 거문고를 가지고 하나님의 종 모세의 노래, 어린 양의 노래를 불러 이르되 주 하나님 곧 전능하신 이시여 하시는 일이 크고 놀라우시도다 만국의 왕이시여 주의 길이 의롭고 참되시도다 주여 누가 주의 이름을 두려워하지 아니하며 영화롭게 하지 아니하오리이까 오직 주만 거룩하시니이다 주의 의로우신 일이 나타났으매 만국이 와서 주께 경배하리이다 하더라.” – 요한계시록 15:2-4

모세의 노래와 드보라의 노래(삿 5-6장)는 하나님의 거룩한 손이 지구라고 부르는 이 단단한 땅 이 아래 지상 영역에 계시되었을 때 우리와 하나님의 그 손과의 관계에 있어 매우 중요한 그림자 공간을 묘사하는 두 편의 서사시입니다. 다음은 사라 야벳 박사가 제 선생님이던 제 초등학교 시절 모세의 노래(출애굽기 15장)에서 배운 것입니다.

1. 하나님께서 다 하셨다! 그분의 손은 그분의 원수(이집트) 위에 영광스럽게 나타나셨다. 그분께서는 애굽 병거를 바다에 가라앉힌 용사셨고, 애굽 사람들은 그 말들과 함께 바위 같이 깊은 데로 내려갔다. 이스라엘은 전쟁에 참여하지 않았다. 그들은 바다 건너편에 서서 그저 그들의 원수가 어떻게 홍해 물에 빠져 죽는지 지켜보았다.

2. 그 원수는 하나님의 자녀들을 멸망시키려는 큰 계획을 가지고 있었다. 애굽 사람들은 잘 준비되어 있고 싸울 준비가 되어 있었지만, 그들은 군대도 없었고 병거도 없었다. 하나님의 손이 들리매 바다가 마치 변기처럼 애굽의 원수를 무저갱으로 씻어내었다.

3. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 자손이 바다를 마른 땅으로 건너기도 전에, 그분의 거룩한 산에 한 처소 곧 성소를 예비하셨다.

하나님의 꾸러미는 주님의 구속받은 자들이 하나님의 성소에 이르러 하나님을 찬양할 수 있도록 세세한 부분까지 완벽하게 준비되고 꾸려졌습니다. 신약성경의 요한계시록은 유월절 이야기 모세의 노래를 본떠 만든 것으로, 악과 악한 자의 군사/천사들을 이기신 하나님의 승리를 기념하는 것입니다.

이번 안식일 토라 포션에서 그 다음 큰 이야기는 빵을 구하는 이스라엘 자녀들의 부조리한 불평과 투덜거림에 주님께서 반응하신 방식입니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 자손에게 진노하지 않으십니다. 사실 그분께서는 세계에서 가장 가혹한 광야 중 하나인 시내 광야에서의 40년 방랑 생활 동안 이스라엘에게 하늘로부터 양식을 주셨습니다. 저라면, 제가 섬기는 사람들이 제가 그들을 위해 한 일에 대해 감사하지 않고 알아주지 않으면, 정말 화가 날 것 같습니다.

그들의 불평에 져주는 대신에 하나님께서는 그들에게 최고의 응답을 주십니다. 하나님께서는, 밭을 갈거나 씨를 뿌리지도 않고, 추수할 필요도 없이, 심지어 빵을 굽지도 않고, 하늘에서 일용할 양식을 그들에게 주신 것입니다.

매일 하늘에서 바로 신선하고 노동이나 값이 들지 않는 신성한 선물인 양식이 내리는 것입니다. 모든 안식일에 나오는 양식은 보통의 양식이 아니었습니다. 만나는 24시간 이상 가지 않았지만, 금요일 아침에 모은 만나는 금, 토요일 이틀이나 갔습니다.

이번 토라 포션에서 우리가 읽는 마지막 사건은 물을 요구하는 이스라엘 자손의 불평에 대해 물을 얻어 그들에게 주도록 하나님께서 모세를 인도하여 처음으로 반석을 치게 하신 사건입니다. 이것은 매우 중요한 이야기이며, 민수기에서 반석을 친 것 때문에 모세를 비판하는 대부분의 사람들은 이 두 사건을 사실 기억하거나 연결시키지 않습니다.

다음은 고린도전서 10장에 있는 바울의 글을 이해하는 데 매우 중요한 말씀입니다:

“모세가 여호와께 부르짖어 이르되 내가 이 백성에게 어떻게 하리이까 그들이 조금 있으면 내게 돌을 던지겠나이다 여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 백성 앞을 지나서 이스라엘 장로들을 데리고 나일 강을 치던 네 지팡이를 손에 잡고 가라 내가 호렙 산에 있는 그 반석 위 거기서 네 앞에 서리니 너는 그 반석을 치라 그것에서 물이 나오리니 백성이 마시리라 모세가 이스라엘 장로들의 목전에서 그대로 행하니라 그가 그 곳 이름을 맛사 또는 므리바라 불렀으니 이는 이스라엘 자손이 다투었음이요 또는 그들이 여호와를 시험하여 이르기를 여호와께서 우리 중에 계신가 안 계신가 하였음이더라.” – 출애굽기 17:4-7

이것은 민수기에서와 같은 경우가 아님을 유의하십시오. 여기서 하나님께서는 모세에게 이렇게 말씀하신다는 점에 유의하십시오: “내가 호렙 산에 있는 그 반석 위 거기서 네 앞에 서리니 너는 그 반석을 치라 그것에서 물이 나오리니 백성이 마시리라.”

므리바 물에서 일어난 이 사건 때문에 사도 바울은 광야에서 친 반석이 이스라엘 자손의 여행의 시작부터 끝까지 그들을 따랐고, 그 친 반석은 메시아 예슈아라고 말한 것입니다. 이와 동일한 가르침이 랍비들의 유대 미드라쉬에서도 발견되며, 이것은 민수기의 두 번째 사건에서 모세가 반석을 친 이유에 대한 개연성 있는 설명이 됩니다.

중요한 일이 좀 있어 불가리아에서 이스라엘로 온 귀한 형제님이 한 분 있는데요, 코로나바이러스 진단검사에서 양성으로 나와 지금 호텔방에 격리되어 일을 못하고 있습니다. 이 형제님의 이름은 크리스토입니다. 여러분의 기도에 크리스도를 올려드려 코로나바이러스로부터 빠른 회복과 불가리아로 안전히 귀향할 수 있도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

브라질 리우데자네이로에 있는 자매 공동체의 지도자인 데이비슨 형제님이 코로나바이러스로 인해 매우 아픕니다. 그는 당뇨가 있고 합병증으로 다른 질환도 좀 있습니다. 데이비슨과 그의 귀한 아내 레나타를 위해 기도해 주십시오.

쯔비 형제님의 아내 밧셰바 데바렘디커 자매님은 퇴원하여 집에서 2주 전에 받은 유방절제수술에서 회복 중입니다. 우리의 귀한 밧셰바 자매님은 이 건강상 어려움이 끝나지 않아 우리의 기도가 필요합니다.

주님을 섬김에 진짜 영웅들인 저희 회중의 연로하신 레아, 아후바, 일라나 자매님들의 상황은 우리의 기도가 필요합니다. 저는 여러분도 저희 모두와 함께 저희 회중의 연로하신 자매님들을 위해 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 이분들은 진짜 믿음의 영웅들이며, 주님과 그분의 백성을 향한 이분들의 사랑은 무한합니다. 하나님의 말씀에는 과부와 고아를 돌보라는 분명한 명령이 있습니다. 이 명령은 토라에서도, 선지서에도, 시가서에도, 신약성경에도 여러 번 반복되었습니다.

누구든, 본인이 나이가 들어가든 연로한 가족이 있든, 성도들과 우리의 영적 가족 공동체에, 이 명령을 지켜 우리의 연로한 분들을 돌보는 일이 맡겨졌다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그분들은 그분들이 젊었을 때 그분들의 모든 것을 내어주었습니다. 이제 그들의 필요한 것을 공급하는 것은 성도들의 책임입니다. 교회적으로, 혹은 개인적으로 예루살렘의 연로한 성도들을 위해 조금 더 헌금하는 것을 고려해 보시기 바랍니다.

이스라엘 상황은 아직 나아지지 않았습니다! 이스라엘은 제한적 이동이 허용된 채 아직 폐쇄 중이며 대부분의 경제활동과 사업체들은 휴업 중인데요, 적어도 당분간 그럴 것입니다. 경제가 피폐해졌습니다.

저는 지난 주 예루살렘 기도 목록에 여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것과, 세계가 회복되고 코로나바이러스라고 불리는 이 끔직한 팬데믹이 끝나도록 기도하는 것은 좋은 일이라고 썼습니다. 코로나는 왕관입니다. 저는 이 바이러스가 어느 왕의 머리의 왕관이 될지 모르겠습니다.

1. 전 세계를 위한 중보 기도를 계속해 주시고, 여러분 각자의 나라를 위한 기도에 집중해 주시되, 이스라엘도 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

2. 다른 형제자매님들을 위해 기도하며 성령을 통해 메시아의 몸을 위해 중보하는 사람들에게는 하나님으로부터의 복이 있습니다.

3. 우리가 전 세계 형제자매님들을 위해 몇 분 동안 기도하는 것은 작은 일 같이 보일지 모르지만, 하나님 나라와 하늘에서는, 메시야 예슈아의 몸이 진짜 한 몸임을 확증하고 그에 맞춘 관심과 진심 어린 중보와 기도에 선한 권위자들의 주의가 기울여집니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – January 13, 2022

The children of Israel are out of Egypt, free at last from Egypt and from slavery This Shabbat the Torah reading is from Exodus 13:17 – 17:16. This reading includes some of the most important moments in the Biblical history. The crossing of the (Red) Sea of Reeds, and the Song of Moses.

The first time that the Lord sends the manna from Heaven to feed the Hebrew slaves freed miraculously from slavery. From the prophets, the Haftarah, is from Judges 4:4-5:31. This Torah reading is the second most important victory song in the Bible – the Song of Deborah that is in this Shabbat’s reading of the Haftarah.

From the New Testament we are reading from the Gospel of John 6:15-71, and 1 Corinthians 10:1-5. All these readings are dealing with the major Hebrew/Jewish pathos, we have an enemy that wants to delete us from history, we pray to God and He saves us!

The Torah portion is called in Hebrew Beshalach. The translation of Beshalach in English is “He let them go!” This phrase is interesting in Exodus 13:17-18:

“Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, ‘Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.’ So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.” – Exodus 13:17,18 [NKJV]

Directly the Torah reveals to us that the leader of the people of Israel is not really Moses it is God, who decided that they will not go the short way, the way through by the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, the way of the Philistines. The text also gives us the rational why God didn’t lead the children of Israel through this shorter way: God feared that if the children of Israel would take the quicker/shorter road, a road that was full of Egyptian military fortresses and then the Philistines, who were very aggressive and good soldiers, the children of Israel would want to return to Egypt.

We learn from this text that God was concerned with the stamina and commitment of the children of Israel, and took precautions to protect the children of Israel from turning back and returning to Egypt, back to slavery. This is an interesting test case from which we can learn some very interesting principles that the Creator of this world applies contrary to common logic in human eyes:

1. You just left Egypt after a couple of hundred years of slavery. You are free at last! You want to get away from the Egyptians that are chasing you, and do it as quick as possible. The last thing that you would expect from the God who loves you is to send you on a wild goose chase and in place of an 11-days trip from Egypt to the Land of Canaan, God makes you tarry and walk and survive in one of the world’s harshest deserts for 40 years of wandering.

2. Knowing that your God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, your forefathers, is all-powerful and having seen His power over Egypt with ten plagues, your expectations could be for God to just wipe out the Egyptian army and lead you as quickly and in as short a time as possible to the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob… one of our problems is that we are very narrow-sighted and have a narrow perspective and a very selfish orientation.

Our problem is that when we speak of “having faith in God” we really mean that we have faith in the doctrines of God. This is true for most religious people, whether Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhist, or whatever, most religious people have this problem.

We believe the doctrines of God and the dogmas of our churches and synagogues! Our religious traditions are like a mask covering our face, but that mask is not over our mouth and nose, the mask is over our eyes.

This mask over our eyes is the mask of too much religion and too little faith and a personal relationship with the almighty God who created this world from A to Z. We all need to find a direct way for establishing a personal relationship with the almighty God of Israel.

You might ask me: How does one do this? How does a person establish such a relationship with God?

My answer comes from the words of Jeremiah the prophet:

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit. The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?’” – Jeremiah 17:5-9 [NKJV]

When the Lord tells Jeremiah the prophet not to trust in man or to let his heart depart from God, He, the Almighty, is including all men, from pastors and popes and preachers and pastors, to bishops and rabbis of all kinds, sizes, colors, or gender preferences. Only when we first trust only the Creator (and His word, from Genesis to Revelation), the one who is father of us all, all mankind, than we can start to give some limited trust to those fellows who claim to be God’s representatives down here on Earth.

Jeremiah states it clearly that even our own hearts are not to be trusted. This is because some of our greatest deception originates in our own hearts, that are full of selfish ambitions and a false confidence that we are smart and very talented.

The lessons that I learn from this approach that the Lord took with the children of Israel is that God always knows what is best for us! Doing thing the quickest way is not always the wisest choice. Sometimes something slow-cooked tastes much better than something instant and quickly ready to eat.

The second lesson to learn from this text is that trusting God even when we think that His advice and instruction is not logical is still the wisest thing to do!

The third lesson that I learn from this text is that the only way to have a real and true relationship with the Almighty is to spend time with Him. This may sound hard or impossible to do, but in actuality it is as apostle Paul told the Athenians:

“…so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us…” – Acts 17:27 [NKJV]

We all have the Word of God, both the written, in a book, Word of God and also the living word of God – Yeshua, available to us. Spending time with the written Word of God and meditating on Him and on His word, with the desire and intention to not only be hearers of the Word but with a sincere desire to keep the Word, will bring us to a very tangible relationship with the Creator Himself through the Holy Spirit that filled us when we died with Yeshua in the water of our purification (baptism) and were raised into new life.

It is this trusting in God that gave Moses the faith to put his feet into the waters of the Red Sea, and to lift up his wooden staff that caused the waters to withdraw and allowed the children of Israel to cross over on dry land.

The song of Moses is also very very important not only for the generation that crossed the Red Sea over dry land, but for me and for all of us. It is even more important because we need to know this song and learn it by heart in the Hebrew language, so that when we stand in front of the eternal throne and the Lamb of God is seated on it and all that big throng of humanity will start singing they will be singing The Song of Moses.

Here is the text:

“And I saw something like a sea of glass mingled with fire, and those who have the victory over the beast, over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, having harps of God. They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: ‘Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, For Your judgments have been manifested.’” – Revelation 15:2-4 [NKJV]

The Song of Moses and the Song of Deborah (Judges 5-6) are two of the epic songs that describe the very important shadowy space in our relationship with the divine hand of God as it is revealed down here in our earthly sphere on this firm land called Earth. Here is what I learned from the Song of Moses (Exodus chapter 15) from my elementary school days, when Dr. Sarah Japheth was my teacher.

1. God did it all! His hand was glorious over His enemy (Egypt). He was the warrior who sunk the Egyptian chariots in the Sea and they went down like a rock into the depths together with their horses. Israel had no part in the battle. They stood on the other side of the sea and just observed how their enemy drowned in the waters of the Red Sea.

2. The enemy had big plans to destroy God’s children. The Egyptians were well prepared and ready for battle, but they didn’t have an army nor did they have chariots. God’s hand was raised and the sea washed out the Egyptian enemy like a flushing toilet into the abyss.

3. God had prepared a place for His children, the children of Israel a place, a sanctuary, on His holy mountain, even before they crossed the sea on dry land.

God’s package was fully organized and packaged down to the last detail so that the redeemed of the Lord would arrive at God’s sanctuary singing His praises. The book of Revelation in the New Testament is patterned after the Passover story after the song of Moses and it is a celebration of God’s victory over evil and the evil one’s soldiers/angels.

The next big story in our Torah portion this Shabbat is the way that the Lord reacted to the children of Israel’s unreasonable complaints and murmurings, wanting bread. God is not angry with the children of Israel. In fact, He provides Israel with bread from Heaven for the full length of their 40 years of wandering in the Sinai desert, one of the harshest deserts in the world. I would get really angry if the people that I served were ungrateful and not appreciative for what I did for them.

In place of giving into their complaints, God gives them a super answer. God gives them their daily bread from heaven, without their having to plow the land, or sow seed, and without having to harvest… even without baking the bread.

Direct from Heaven daily, fresh and free of labor or cost – a divine gift of bread. Sustenance that every Sabbath demonstrated was not normal bread. The manna would not last more than 24 hours, but the manna that was collected on Friday morning lasted for two days, Friday and Saturday.

The last event that we read in this portion of the Torah is the first time that God leads Moses to strike the rock in order to get water and provide for the complaints of the children of Israel, for their request for water. This is a very important story and most people who criticize Moses for striking the rock in the book of Numbers don’t really remember or connect the two events.

Here is the text that is of great importance for the understanding of Paul’s writings in 1 Corinthians chapter 10:

“So Moses cried out to the Lord, saying, ‘What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!’ And the Lord said to Moses, ‘Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.’ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the Lord, saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’” – Exodus 17:4-7 [NKJV]

Please note that this is not the same case like in the book of Numbers. Note that here God says to Moses, “Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.”

It is this incident at the waters of Meribah that caused the apostle Paul to say that the rock that was struck in the wilderness followed the children of Israel from the beginning of their journey to the end of their journey and that rock that was struck was Yeshua the Messiah. This same teaching is found in the rabbinical Jewish Midrash and it is a plausible explanation of the reason as to why Moses struck the rock in the second case in the book of Numbers.

We are starting the second semester of teaching in Yeshua College in Zimbabwe next week on January 17th, 2022. We have Daniel Stern, and Yuda B, Lion E., Matheus G, and myself teaching 35 leaders. It is a big challenge and all the teaching is done by Zoom that makes it even more challenging. Please pray for all the teachers and for the students in Zimbabwe who will be a challenge to us as teacher and we are for sure going to challenge them as our students.

Please keep praying for Marcia my wife and for me. We are both feeling our age and with the coronavirus we are both in need of your prayers, but especially Marcia needs God’s merciful hand to keep her memory and daily activities functioning without forgetting important things that she needs to do for herself at home. There are some medical tests that she has to do soon, CT and MRI and other tests to understand better what are the causes of some of Marcia’s problems.

We have a dear brother from Bulgaria who came to Israel to do some important work and was found to test positive for the coronavirus and who is now quarantined in his hotel room and can’t do his job. This brother’s name is Cristo - please lift Cristo in prayer for a speedy recovery from the coronavirus and a safe return home to Bulgaria.

Brother Davison, a leader of a sister community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is very sick with coronavirus. He is diabetic and has some other pre-conditions that complicate things. Pray for Davison and for Renata his dear wife.

Bathsheba Derbaremdicker, Zvi’s wife, is out of the hospital and recovering at home from a total mastectomy that she had two weeks ago. Bathsheba, our dear sister, is not finished with these health challenges, and needs our prayers.

The situation of our older sisters who are true heroes in the service of the Lord – Leah, Ahuva, and Ilana need our prayers. I am asking you join us all in praying for our older sisters. They are true heroes of faith, and their love for the Lord, and for His people, is without limit. There is a clear command in the word of God to take care of the widows and orphans. This command appears in the Torah, the prophets, the writings, and in the New Testament - even several times.

Anyone who is getting old or has older family members must know that the fellowship of the saints and of our spiritual family can be trusted to keep this commandment and to take care of our older generation of people who have given their all during their younger years, and it is the responsibility of the saints to take care of their elderly. Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra for the elderly saints of Jerusalem.

Keep praying for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation. What makes this kindergarten different from all others in Jerusalem is that it has Jewish and Arab and Christian children together learning co-existence from an early age.

Zacharias Waldner from Canada who is paraplegic has a problem with sores and is asking for our prayers. Please add Zacharias to your prayer list.

I also received a request to pray for a young brother, Raymond Jimenez, who has the coronavirus and needs God’s blessing for recovering and returning back to his normal life.

We received a prayer request from a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen, who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim (the “coerced ones”, descendants of 15th century Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who continued to secretly practice their Judaism - getting the State of Israel to accept them as Jews under the Law of Return has been an issue) and their plight…

Please keep brother Philip Marc in your prayers. Philip is a young man with very serious cancer. He is a truth seeker and a faithful disciple of Yeshua who loves God and who is a lover of Israel. Philip lives far from Israel in a country that we can’t travel to, but Philips heart is with us, and with God’s people.

Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.

The situation in Israel is not getting better yet! Israel is still under closure with limited mobility and most of the economy and businesses are closed, at least for now. The economy is devastated.

I wrote last week in the Jerusalem Prayer List that it is a good work to pray for people whom you don’t know personally and to pray for the world to recover and bring an end to this horrible pandemic called the coronavirus. Corona is a crown, and I am not sure on the head of which king this virus is a crown.

1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.

2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the body of the Messiah.

3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the kingdom and in the Heavens, attention is paid by the authorities of goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.

a. Pray for all the former and present people involved in Korean Israel Bible Instruction Ministry.

b. Pray for the former board members of KIBI and that those who need to repent and restore their relationship, receive power from on high, to do so.

c. Pray for those members and academics that are and were a part of the Israel Forum.

d. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel.

e. Pray for the spiritual and physical health of all those in Korea who are still praying for the body of the Messiah in Israel and specifically praying and supporting Netivyah. Bless them and inspire them and pray that they be filled with faith, hope and love for the Lord and for Israel.

Let us all pray and encourage our spiritual leaders to lead and to point us toward repentance and to confession of our sins and weaknesses, so that the Lord will lift this coronavirus from off of this earth and we will remember the Lord and seek to walk in His paths of righteousness and truth.

Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her situation as does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time.

We are praying for a three-year-old little girl who is ill with a rare illness and cancer. She lives with her family in California and we need to pray for her and her family to receive attention and healing from the Lord and to be allowed to grow up to serve His kingdom.

I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew, and Pastor Isaac from the city of Chennai. Pastor Isaac is suffering from kidney problems and is on dialysis a few times each week. Please lift brother Isaac in your prayers.

Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Brazil. Brazil is one of the countries with a remarkably high count of sick and dead people from the coronavirus. We have brothers and sisters all around Brazil, and I ask you to just say a prayer for divine protection and for wisdom to keep them clear from this deadly plague.

Also include in your prayers Caique de Oliveira Becker. These are people in Brazil who need the Lord’s special grace for healing.

Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil. Please keep in your prayers our dear brother Pastor TJ in Taiwan. TJ is going through a new phase in his life.

Keep Ruby Little in your prayers, our dear sister from Oklahoma City. Ruby went through a new set of tests for her cancer and the tests returned with not such a good news. Ruby is in need of our prayers. Pray for God to heal Ruby from her cancer that after two years of treatments not much improvement. Ruby needs a miracle and strength and courage to deal with this challenge in the best way that will give her a better quality of life than chemotherapy, for divine intervention a miracle of healing.

Please pray for the family of brother Joseph Kelber and especially for his son. Pray for Rachael and Daniel, a brother and sister who need jobs and emotional healing. Keep praying for Nancy, Don and their son Aaron Hook, Rachel David Kim’s wife – Jingyung Lee, Dr. Yuizawa, Tiz H., Lion H, Ilana Abramov, David Stern and his family, Anne West who is now 100 years old. Keep praying for Gary, and Melanie.

Remember the following brothers and sisters from the Roeh Israel Congregation in Jerusalem; Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Zvi D. and Bathsheba, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their baby, and pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan. Sister Yoko had a stroke, and we pray that her recovery will be quick and full.

From Chennai, India, please remember Pastor Isaac. From Hong Kong, remember all of Hong Kong during these days of several different kinds of viruses and the coronavirus. Remember Tony and Louisa Tam, and our brothers and sisters at the 611 Church, and the other churches who love God and love Israel in that great city.

Just a word of grace before the mercy seat of the Almighty will be heard in favor of these brothers and Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and his family, Keijo and Salme our dear brothers in Finland, Tim Tucker, Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli. Our other brothers and sisters in Finland who need our prayers, Evelina, and Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia and Victor, and Aaron Tani, and Hillel and his wife.

Around the whole world, we pray for Zhou Wenrian, Abe family, Toru, Takeo Sensei, Daisuke Sensei, Tomoko San, Yumi, George, Louisa, and Tony and sister Katherine Shang all in Hong Kong.

I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus.

Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.

By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.

You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:

1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.

2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.

3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.

4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Ismael Alves, Asher Gabriel, M. Ahuva a dear sister from Kenya. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah L.

Pray for Israel. Businesses are closing, and bankruptcy is happening to old established companies and businesses and even our national airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. People do not have money to put food on their tables. The number of people in need of basic food is growing.

Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double the number of people and families that we serve.

Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

I was asked by brothers and sisters of the Messianic congregation, Shoresh David (The Root of David) in Portland, Oregon, to pray for Portland. Anarchist elements have taken the center of Portland, OR, and turned it into chaos, and disorder. So, please pray for Portland, OR, and for our brothers and sisters in that city.

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.

Third, please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.

The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.

This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months.

We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families.

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
