이번 토라 포션은 제가 토라 중에서 제일 좋아하는 부분 중 하나입니다. 여러분은 제가 이미 다른 토라 포션에서도 그것이 저의 가장 좋아하는 포션이라고 말했었다는 인상을 받았을 것입니다. 사람이 하나님의 말씀 중에 가장 좋아하는 포션이 하나 이상 있는 것은 좋은 일입니다.

우리가 이번 포션이 왜 그렇게 중요한지 이해하려면, 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱의 이 “거룩한” 가족 안에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 이해하는 것이 중요합니다. 1960년대에 “오호, 통재라, 우리 집에 스캔들이 있도다.”라는 노래가 있었습니다.

우리 가족은 좋은 가족이지만, 노만 로크웰 그림 속처럼 완벽한 가족은 아닙니다. 그러나 우리가 가장 존경하고 예우하는 족장들은 모두 우리가 “불명예스러운 가족”이라고 부를 만한 가족이었습니다.

야곱의 가족은 다름 아닌 대단히 불명예스러운 가족이었습니다. 저는 성령님께서 우리에게 이 이야기를 의도적으로 말씀해 주셨을 뿐만 아니라, 확대경으로 확대하셨다고 생각합니다.

이번 주 토라 포션은 “바예쩨”라는 단어로 시작됩니다. 이것은 평이한 말로 번역하면 “그리고 이제 야곱이 밖으로 나갔다.”로 번역될 것입니다. 야곱이 “밖으로” 나가게 된 배경이 아주 중요합니다.

여러분은 야곱과 에서의 어머니 리브가가 메시지를 받았던 것을 아실 것입니다. 그것은 간단한 메시지가 아니었습니다. 그것은 야곱의 형 에서가 그의 맘속으로 말한 메시지였기 때문입니다.

리브가는 어떻게 에서가 맘속으로 말한 것을 알 수 있었을까요? 이것을 근거로, 랍비 전승은 리브가가 여선지자여서 주님께서 리브가에게 아들 에서가 그의 맘속으로 말한 것을 드러내셨다는 것입니다.

에서는 그의 맘속으로 다음과 같이 말했고, 우리는 성령님께서 에서의 어머니 리브가를 통해 우리에게 드러내신 에서의 생각을 알 수 있는 특권을 누리고 있습니다. 에서가 그의 맘속으로 말한 것은 이렇습니다:

“그의 아버지가 야곱에게 축복한 그 축복으로 말미암아 에서가 야곱을 미워하여 심중에 이르기를 아버지를 곡할 때가 가까웠은즉 내가 내 아우 야곱을 죽이리라 하였더니” – 창세기 27:41

자기 동생을 죽이려는 에서의 의도에 대한 이 이야기를 받은 리브가는 그녀의 고향, 하란의 그녀의 오라비 라반의 집으로 야곱을 보낼 계획을 세웁니다. 하란은 시리아 북부 알레포라는 소도시 근처입니다.

젊은이가 혼자 걸어서 이 거리를 가기에 먼 거리입니다. 야곱에게 나귀가 있더라도 쉽지 않은 여정이었을 텐데, 창세기 뒤에서 야곱은 이렇게 말합니다:

“나는 주께서 주의 종에게 베푸신 모든 은총과 모든 진실하심을 조금도 감당할 수 없사오나 내가 내 지팡이만 가지고 이 요단을 건넜더니 지금은 두 떼나 이루었나이다.” – 창세기 32:10

저는 야곱이 지팡이를 짚고 요단강을 건넜다고 말했을 때 그가 나귀를 타지 않고 걸었다는 뜻이라고 생각합니다.

야곱은 사실 그의 형 에서의 살해 의도 때문에 그를 피해 달아나고 있었습니다. 그렇게 하려면 야곱의 어머니 리브가는 이삭이 야곱이 집을 떠나는 것을 동의할 마땅한 구실을 만들어야 합니다.

그 구실은 야곱이 가나안 땅 현지인 여인과 결혼하면 안 된다는 것입니다. 그녀는 그녀의 고모 할머니 사라처럼 시리아 북부에서 이민 온 이 이민자들이 그들의 고향 시리아 여인과 결혼하기를 원했습니다.

이런 현상은 지금까지도 유대인 중에서는 잘 알려져 있습니다. “같은 깃털을 가진 새들은 함께 모인다.(유유상종)”이라는 옛 속담이 있습니다. 이삭이 이 원칙을 이해할 수 있었던 이유는 바로 그의 아버지가 그를 위해 이렇게 했기 때문입니다. 아브라함은 그의 친척 중에서 이삭을 위한 신부를 찾아오도록 보냈습니다.

우리가 창세기를 읽다보면 아브라함의 아들 이삭이 왜 40세가 될 때까지 결혼하지 않았는지 이해할 수 있습니다. 오늘날에도 이것이 좀 이상하지만, 고대 사회에서는 천 배는 더 이상했을 것입니다.

그럼, 우리는 이 이상한 상황의 이유가 뭐일 것이라고 알 수 있을까요? 제가 랍비들의 창세기 주석에서 배운 답은 이것입니다!

이삭이 결혼하지 않고 스스로 그의 신부를 찾지 않고, 그의 연로한 아버지가 걱정하며 그의 노종 엘리에셀을 시리아, 라반의 집까지 보내어 라반의 누이 리브가의 도움을 청한 이유를 설명하는 말씀은 이렇습니다.

“사라가 본즉 아브라함의 아들 애굽 여인 하갈의 아들이 이삭을 놀리는지라.” – 창세기 21:9

“이삭이 거기 오래 거주하였더니 이삭이 그 아내 리브가를 껴안은 것을 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉이 창으로 내다본지라.” – 창세기 26:8

“그러할 때에 요셉이 그의 일을 하러 그 집에 들어갔더니 그 집 사람들은 하나도 거기에 없었더라 그 여인이 그의 옷을 잡고 이르되 나와 동침하자 그러나 요셉이 자기의 옷을 그 여인의 손에 버려두고 밖으로 나가매 그 여인이 요셉이 그의 옷을 자기 손에 버려두고 도망하여 나감을 보고 그 여인의 집 사람들을 불러서 그들에게 이르되 보라 주인이 히브리 사람을 우리에게 데려다가 우리를 희롱하게 하는도다 그가 나와 동침하고자 내게로 들어오므로 내가 크게 소리 질렀더니 그가 나의 소리 질러 부름을 듣고 그의 옷을 내게 버려두고 도망하여 나갔느니라 하고” – 창세기 39:11-15

여기와 성경의 다른 곳에서 “놀리다”, “껴안다(애무하다)”, “희롱하다”, “그가 나와 동침하고자 내게로 들어왔다”로 번역된 것과 같은 단어는 모두 히브리어의 똑같은 단어 “메짜헥”입니다.

이 단어의 어근은 이삭의 이름, “웃다”, “놀다”, 성적 유희라는 단어의 어근과 같습니다. 여러분이 요셉과 애굽의 바로의 궁정 대신 보디발의 아내의 이야기에서 알 수 있듯이 말입니다.

사라는 사라의 여종 하갈의 아들 이스마엘이 열세 살 어린 이삭을 상대로 성적으로 희롱하는 것을 보았습니다. 사라는 강력하고 충분한 이유 없이 아브라함에게 그의 아들 이스마엘과 그의 어미 하갈을 내쫓으라고 요구하는 냉정하고 악한 여인이 아니었습니다!

그 이유는 아주 정당했습니다. 이스마엘은 이삭이 하나님께서 아브라함에게 약속한 약속들을 이행할 수 없게 만들고 싶었던 것입니다. 이것이 사라가 하갈과 이스마엘을 아브라함의 진영에서 내쫓고 싶어 했던 진짜 이유입니다.

아브라함은 하갈과 이스마엘을 그의 진영에서 내보내는 것을 반대했지만, 주님께서 아브라함에게 말씀하셨습니다:

“하나님이 아브라함에게 이르시되 네 아이나 네 여종으로 말미암아 근심하지 말고 사라가 네게 이른 말을 다 들으라 이삭에게서 나는 자라야 네 씨라 부를 것임이니라.” – 창세기 21:12

저는 주님께서 아브라함에게 “사라가 네게 이른 말을 다 들으라.”고 말씀하셨다는 사실을 좋아합니다. 저는 종종 주님께서 제게 들리는 음성으로 “요셉, 네 아내 마르시아의 말을 들어라!” 말씀하셨다면 절대적으로 제 아내 마르시아의 말을 듣고 따랐을 것이라고 농담을 합니다.

저는 제가 농담으로 이렇게 말한다고 말씀드리기는 했지만, 저는 주님께서 어떻게 친히 사라 대신 개입하셔서 하갈과 이스마엘을 그들의 진영에서 내쫓기로 한 결정을 지지해주셨는지 보여주는 이 본문을 좋아합니다. 랍비 주석에 따르면, 이것이 이삭이 40세가 될 때까지 결혼하지 않은 까닭입니다.

이 때문에 이삭은 스스로 그의 가족을 찾아 일구려는 노력을 하지 않았던 것입니다. 이삭은 그의 유년기에 이스마엘이 그에게 무슨 짓을 했든 그것 때문에 상처를 입었던 것입니다.

라헬을 향한 야곱의 사랑. 그가 시리아, 라반의 집을 떠나 주님께서 친히 이미 아브라함과 그의 씨에게 다섯 번 이상 약속하신 약속의 땅으로 돌아오기 전까지 총 21년을 라헬을 위해 기꺼이 일하고자 했던 사랑.

야곱은 라헬을 위해 7년을 일하기로 그의 삼촌 라반과 첫 번째 합의를 했습니다. 라반은 그 지역에서는 손위 딸과 먼저 결혼해야 한다는 변명으로 그의 편의 합의를 지키지 않았습니다.

라반은 거짓말을 했고 야곱을 속였습니다. 그렇지만 야곱은 라헬을 너무 사랑하여 라헬과 결혼하기 위해 라반을 위해 7년을 더 일하고자 했습니다.

그런 다음 라반은 야곱을 세 번째 속여 그가 14년 동안 일한 데서 얻은 재정적 이익에서 실질적으로 아무 것도 주지 않았습니다. 그래서 야곱은 그의 대가족을 데리고 아무런 재정적 안정 없이 가나안 땅으로 돌아가지 않도록 어느 정도 부를 창출하기 위해 7년을 더 일하기로 합의했습니다.

그럼, 야곱이 그의 삼촌 라반을 위해 일할 때 얻은 부의 비결은 무엇이었을까요? 야곱은 그의 삼촌이자 장인인 라반에게 와서 말합니다,

“라헬이 요셉을 낳았을 때에 야곱이 라반에게 이르되 나를 보내어 내 고향 나의 땅으로 가게 하시되 내가 외삼촌에게서 일하고 얻은 처자를 내게 주시어 나로 가게 하소서 내가 외삼촌에게 한 일은 외삼촌이 아시나이다.” – 창세기 30:25,26

리브가의 오라비이며 야곱의 삼촌인 라반은 일을 잘 굴렸습니다. 야곱은 그저 그의 아내 라헬과 라반을 얻기 위해 14년을 라반을 위해 일했습니다.

라반은 야곱이 그의 딸들과 손주들과 함께 가게 하고 싶지 않았습니다. 그렇지만 이보다 훨씬 더 중대한 것은 라반이 야곱이 자신을 위해 부를 창출하게 하고 싶지 않았다는 것입니다.

그런데 야곱은 형편없는 사업가가 아니었습니다. 야곱이 한 그릇의 죽으로 에서의 유업을 산 유능한 사업가였다는 것을 기억하십시오.

그래서 여기에 야곱이 그의 아내들과 그의 아이들과 함께 가져가 그의 가족을 구하고 그의 고향 가나안 땅으로 돌아가도록, 에서 앞에 내놓을 큰 부를 일구기 위해 라반과 맺은 거래가 있습니다!

창세기 30:28에서 협잡꾼으로 알려진 라반은 야곱에게 “네 값을 말만 하라, 그러면 내가 네게 주겠노라!” 말합니다. 야곱의 반응은 아주 흥미롭고 아주 현명합니다:

“라반이 이르되 내가 무엇으로 네게 주랴 야곱이 이르되 외삼촌께서 내게 아무것도 주시지 않아도 나를 위하여 이 일을 행하시면 내가 다시 외삼촌의 양 떼를 먹이고 지키리이다 오늘 내가 외삼촌의 양 떼에 두루 다니며 그 양 중에 아롱진 것과 점 있는 것과 검은 것을 가려내며 또 염소 중에 점 있는 것과 아롱진 것을 가려내리니 이같은 것이 내 품삯이 되리이다 후일에 외삼촌께서 오셔서 내 품삯을 조사하실 때에 나의 의가 내 대답이 되리이다 내게 혹시 염소 중 아롱지지 아니한 것이나 점이 없는 것이나 양 중에 검지 아니한 것이 있거든 다 도둑질한 것으로 인정하소서 라반이 이르되 내가 네 말대로 하리라 하고” – 창세기 30:31-34

여기에 양의 유전적 특질에 대한 야곱의 신적 지혜와 이해가 있습니다. 야곱은 하나님의 약속의 신실성과 하늘에서 땅으로 이어진 사다리 꿈 이후 그가 주님께 한 맹세를 믿었습니다.

야곱은 힘든 선택이지만 현명한 선택을 했습니다. 나와 내 가족을 부양하기 위해 주님을 의뢰하는 것이 사람으로부터의 자선을 받는 사람이 되는 것보다 낫습니다!

야곱은 라반의 가축 떼에서 흔하지 않은 “아롱진 것과 점 있는 것과 검은” 양과 염소를 받기로 선택했습니다. 라반의 가축 떼 중에서 흔하지 않은 이 동물들로부터 야곱은 그의 가축 떼를 늘려 부자가 될 수 있었습니다.

야곱은 그의 아내들과, 주님의 축복을 통해 양과 염소 떼로 이룬 부를 가지고 라반의 집을 떠날 권리를 얻었고, 이제 시리아, 라반의 집을 떠나 하나님께서 친히 그의 조부 아브라함과 그의 아버지 이삭과 그에게 약속하신 땅으로 돌아갈 준비가 되었습니다. 여기에 야곱의 성공의 비결이 있습니다:

“이르시되 네 눈을 들어 보라 양 떼를 탄 숫양은 다 얼룩무늬 있는 것, 점 있는 것과 아롱진 것이니라 라반이 네게 행한 모든 것을 내가 보았노라 나는 벧엘의 하나님이라 네가 거기서 기둥에 기름을 붓고 거기서 내게 서원하였으니 지금 일어나 이 곳을 떠나서 네 출생지로 돌아가라 하셨느니라.” – 창세기 31:12,13

야곱의 이야기에서의 교훈은 이것입니다! 사람들이, 심지어 여러분의 가족들이 여러분의 선의와 친절을 이용해 먹을 때, 주님께서는 이런 악행을 보시며, 우리가 악인들의 손에 빠진다고 하더라도 주님께서는 신실하시어 그분의 자녀에게 그들의 선행을 갚아주십니다. 그렇지만 그분께서는 악인들과 부정직한 사람들에게 합당한 대로 갚아주시는 일에도 전념하십니다.

안식일마다 우리는 우리의 기도예배 시작 때 히브리어로 “익달”이라고 부르는 기도송을 옳게 부릅니다. 이 기도송의 이름은 영어로는 “증대”입니다.

이 기도송은 중세시대의 위대한 의사, 랍비, 많은 유대 랍비 문헌의 주석가인 마이모니데스에 헌사한 것입니다. 마이모니데스의 노래인 “익달”에 나오는 몇 구절입니다:

“하나님께서는 각각의 의인에게 그의 행위를 보상하시고, 악인에게 그들의 악행대로 벌하시는도다.”

저는 제 평생과 대부분 이스라엘에서의 57년 사역 동안 익달 기도문의 이 구절이 실제임을 보았다는 것을 고백합니다. 우리는 하나님의 말씀에서 “신학”과 “종교적” 규율만을 배울 것이라 생각해서는 안 됩니다.

우리가 하나님의 말씀에서 배워야 하는 주요한 것은 바로 주님과, 그분께서 그분의 자녀인 우리와 관계를 맺는 방식과, 그분이 그분의 자녀인 우리 중에서 어떻게 역사하시는지 이해하는 것입니다. 그렇지만 우리는 하나님의 자녀인 우리가 어떻게 살고 일하며 우주의 창조주를 섬겨야 하는지도 배워야 합니다.

하나님께서 의인에게 그들의 의대로 보상하시고, 악인에게 그들의 악대로 벌하신다는 이 안식일 기도송에서 마지막 요점은 하나님은 언제나 의인과 악인 모두에게 그분의 약속을 신실히 지키신다는 것입니다.

족장들의 이야기는 실수를 하는 착한 사람들을 가르치는 진짜 학교이며, 하나님의 은혜는 의인의 실수와 죄를 속죄하십니다. 우리도 족장들의 이야기에서 우리가 하나님의 은혜와 선함을 힘입기 위해 우리의 삶을 어떻게 살고 행동해야 하는지 원리와 지침을 볼 수 있습니다.

저는 저와 여러분도 어떻게 살며 선을 행하며 우리 주위 사람들과 우리 가족과 자녀와 손주들에게 축복이 될 것인지 배우기 위해 하나님의 말씀을 읽도록 기도합니다. 토라는 우리 영혼을 교육시키기 위한 책입니다.

우리는 우리 형제자매님들에 대해 말할 때 성도라는 단어를 자주 사용하지 않습니다. 여러분이 신약성경을 읽으며 성도라는 단어의 사용에 주의를 기울인다면, 여러분은 믿음 안에 있는 보통의 형제자매님들이 성도라고 불린 것을 알고 놀라실 것이라 믿습니다.

우리가 정말로 하나님의 말씀을 믿는다면, 우리는 우리의 생각을 다시금 정리하고, 성도가 되고 성도답게 행동하도록 부름 받은 우리의 진짜 소명과 사명을 회복해야 합니다. 우리가 고칠 수 없고 가망 없는 죄인 – 노구드닉스 – 라는 헬라 스토익 이교도적 세계관은 바뀌어야 합니다.

어쩌면 메시아께서 우리를 구속하기 전에는 우리가 가망 없는 죄인이었을 것입니다. 우리가 계속 이렇게 의기소침하고 우울한 사고방식을 갖고 있다면, 우리가 메시아께 가진 소망은 헛될 것입니다. 우리가 얼마나 이 열매 없고 메마른 땅에서 방랑하는 죄인인가 늘상 강조하면서 소망이 있을 수 있을까요?

아닙니다, 친애하는 형제님들, 우리는 왕의 자녀입니다. 우리에게는 녹과 동록이 멸할 수 없는 영원한 유업이 있습니다. 케이조와 살메 린드만을 위해 집중적으로 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 이들은 진짜 성도이며, 우리가 은빛 물결 바닷가에 모였을 때에야 이 가족이 하나님 나라와 이스라엘을 위해 한 일을 알게 될 것입니다.

저는 저희 둘을 위한 특별 기도를 부탁드리는데요, 특별히 제 아내 마르시아를 위해 기도해 주십시오. 마르시아는 잘 지내고 있기는 하지만 아직 어지럼증이 있고 불안정한 상태입니다.

이번에 미국으로의 여행이 마르시아에게 특별히 중요한 것은 마르시아의 친정어머니가 돌아가셨을 때 저희가 그곳에 가지 못했기 때문입니다. 오랫동안 추수감사절을 지키는 것이 가족이 함께 모여 축하하는 중심에 있었었습니다.

금년 추수감사절은 마르시아의 친정가족이 그들의 어머니를 추모하는 첫 해가 될 것입니다. 마르시아를 위해 순적하고 안전하며 아무 문제없는 비행이 되고 테네시에 잘 도착하도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

제 눈은 아직 기도가 필요합니다! 저는 아직 약을 먹어야 하며, 적어도 일 년 더 먹어야 할 것입니다. 제 눈에 이식된 각막은 공여자에게서 받은 것인데요, 거부반응의 위험은 언제나 있습니다.

아프가니스탄에 남겨져 탈레반의 수중에 놓인 기독교인 형제자매님들을 위해 계속 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 이들 형제자매님들은 목숨이 진짜 위험한 상황에 있습니다. 시간이 지날수록 아프가니스탄에 있는 우리 형제자매님들의 상황은 더욱 더 나아지지 않고 있습니다.

제 딸 다나와 제 손녀 노아암은 특별 기도가 필요합니다.

뇌졸중으로 중환자실에 입원했던, 하나님의 사람이며 제 제자 중 하나인 스티브(아셰르) 목크를 위해 계속 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 지금 스티브 목크는 귀가했으나, 말과 거동에 큰 어려움이 있습니다.

저희의 귀한 친구 마흐무드 아부-에이드의 누이 구즐란이 매우 아프고, 마흐무드의 어머니도우리의 기도가 필요합니다. 아부-에이드 가족은 저희의 동기간 같은 팔레스타인 친구들 중 가장 착하고 귀한 가족 중 하나입니다. 여러분의 기도에 이들을 올려드려 주시기 바랍니다.

아부-에이드 가족의 아들인 지미를 위해서도 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 그는 일주일 있으면 결혼을 하는데요, 이 결혼에 우리의 기도와 축복이 필요합니다.

여러분의 기도에 이스라엘 정부를 기억해 주십시오. 이 새 정부에는 문제가 많지만, 민주적으로 선출된 정부입니다. 정부는 지난 3년 동안 없었던 그런 예산을 통과시키는 과정 중에 있습니다.

이전 정부와 새로 구성된 아주 복잡한 현 정부 사이에 계속되는 미움을 퍼뜨리는 일이 막 구덩이에서 빠져나오고 있습니다. 이 지역에서 이 미움과 불협화음이 그치지 않는다면 우리의 존재 자체가 위험합니다.

이스라엘을 위해, 좌익과 중도와 우익과 위와 아래를 위해 기도해 주십시오. 이스라엘의 유대인과 아랍인과 드루즈인들을 위해 기도해 주십시오.

저는 하나님께 그분의 백성과 그분의 땅에 긍휼을 베풀어주시도록 간구합니다. 모든 포럼, 모든 강단, 모든 경우에 이스라엘 편에 서주십시오.

기독교의 미래는 로마나 콘스탄티노플이나 오클라호마 털사에 달려있지 않습니다. 전 세계 하나님의 백성의 미래는 하나님께서 이스라엘에 하신 약속의 성취와 메시아께서 예루살렘, 새 예루살렘으로 재림하시는 것에 달렸습니다.

아주 힘든 이 때에 네티비야를 위해, 이스라엘 사람들에게 선을 행하며 그들을 축복하고 먹이고 지지해줄 기회를 위해 기도하고 후원해 주십시오. 이스라엘에서 이 어려운 시절에 어려움에 처한 이들의 수가 몇 배로 늘었습니다.

저희가 예루살렘의 빈궁한 사람들과, 대학교 학생들인 믿는 자들에게 선을 행하고 축복이 될 기회들을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 하나님께서 주시는 기쁨과 특권의 기회입니다. 그리고 선을 행하고 축복이 되도록 주님께서 저희에게 주시는 모든 기회는 우리의 판단과 자선을 테스트 하는 것이기도 합니다.

제가 열여덟 살이었을 때 메시아를 믿는 믿음 때문에 집에서 쫓겨났을 때, 저는 제 편이 아무도 없었고 저를 인도해 줄 사람이 아무도 없었습니다. 주님의 도우시는 이끄심과 인도만이 저에게 유일한 인도함이었습니다. 저는 제 인생에 있어온 주님의 선하심과 지도로 인해 주님을 찬양합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – November 11, 2021

This portion of the Torah is one of my favorite part of the Torah. You might have the impression that I have already said the same on other portions of the Torah that they are my favorite. It is OK for a person to have more than one portion of God’s word as his favorite.

In order for us to understand why this portion is so important it is important for us to understand what is happening in this “holy” family of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. There is a song from the 1960’s that says, “Woe is me, there is a scandal in my family.”

I had a good family, but not a family that was post card perfect like in a Norman Rockwell painting. However, all our most revered and honored patriarchs had what I would call “scandalous families.”

Jacob’s family was no less than a super-scandalous family. I think that the Holy Spirit on purpose not only told us these stories but enhanced them with a magnifying glass.

Our Torah Portion starts with the word “Vayetze” – which if translated to plain English would translate “and now Jacob went out”. The background of Jacob’s going “out”, or running way, is of great importance.

You see Rebecca, Jacob and Esau’s mother, received a message. It was not a simple message. Because it was a message of what Esau, Jacob’s brother, said in his own heart.

How could Rebecca know what Esau said in his heart? On this bases the rabbinical tradition is that Rebecca was a prophetess that the Lord reveled to her what Esau her son said in his heart.

Esau said in his heart the following and we are privileged to have Esau’s thoughts reveled to us by the Holy Spirit through Rebecca his mother. This is what Esau said in his heart:

“So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ‘The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.’” – Genesis 27:41 [NKJV]

Rebecca, having received this news about Esau’s intention to kill his brother, is devising a scheme to send Jacob to her hometown and to the home of her brother Laban in Haran, that is in northern Syria, near the town of Aleppo.

It is a long distance for a young man alone to track this distance on foot. Even if Jacob had a donkey it would not be easy, but later on in the book of Genesis Jacob said:

“I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies.” – Genesis 32:10 [NKJV]

I presume that when Jacob says that he crossed over the Jordan River with his staff that he walked and didn’t ride a donkey.

Jacob is actually running from his brother Esau because of Esau’s murderous intent. In order to make this possible Rebecca Jacob’s mother has to invent a good excuse in order for Isaac to agree for Jacob to leave home.

The excuse is that Jacob ought not marry a girl from the local inhabitants of the land of Canaan. She, like Sarah her grand aunt, wants these immigrants from northern Syria to get married to a girl from their homeland, Syria.

This phenomenon is well known among Jews even until now. There is the old adage; “birds of a feather flock together.” So, Isaac can understand this principle because this exactly what his father did for him. He sent to Haran to find a bride for Isaac from the family.

If we read the book of Genesis we can understand why Isaac, the son of Abraham, is not married until the age of 40 years old. Even today this is a bit strange, but in the ancient world that would be 1000 times more strange.

So, what do we find that could be the cause of this strange situation? Here is the answer that I have learned from the rabbinical commentaries for Genesis!

Here is the text that explains the reason why Isaac is not married and why he doesn’t find a bride by himself, and his old father has to worry and send his old servant Eliezer all the way to Syria to the house of Laban to ask the hand of his younger sister Rebecca.

“And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing.” – Genesis 21:9 [NKJV]

“Now it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked through a window, and saw, and there was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah his wife.” – Genesis 26:8 [NKJV]

“But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, that she caught him by his garment, saying, ‘Lie with me.’ But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, ‘See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.’” – Genesis 39:11-15 [NKJV]

Here and in other places in the Bible that the same word that is translated in the texts above as “scoffing”, “showing endearment”, “mocking”, “He came in to me to lie with me,” are all the same Hebrew word, “MeTzaCheK”.

The root of this word is the same word as the name of Isaac, the same as the word “laughing”, “playing”, and having sexual play. As you can see from the context of the story of Joseph and the wife of Potiphar the minister in Pharaoh’s court in Egypt.

Sarah saw Ishmael, Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian handmaid playing sexually with Isaac, who was 13 years younger. Sarah was not a harsh and evil woman to demand from Isaac to expel his son Ishmael and his mother Hagar, without a strong enough reason!

The reason was very justified. Ishmael wanted to make sure that Isaac will not be able to carry out the promises that God promised Abraham. This is the real reason that Sarah wanted to expel Hagar and Ishmael out of Abraham’s camp.

Abraham objected to sending Hagar and Ishmael out of his camp, but the Lord told Abraham:

“But God said to Abraham, ‘Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called.’” – Genesis 21:12 [NKJV]

I like the fact that the Lord said to Abraham, “whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice.” I often joke that I would definitely hear and obey my dear wife Marcia if the Lord would verbally tell me in an audible voice, “Joseph listen to your wife Marcia!”

I said that I say it as a joke, but I like this text how the Lord Himself intervened on behalf of Sarah and supported her decision to kick Hagar and Ishmael out of their camp. According to the rabbinical commentary, this is the reason why Isaac didn’t get married until he was 40 years old.

This is the reason why Isaac himself didn’t look or make an effort to build a family. Isaac was damaged by whatever Ishmael did to him in his very youth.

The love of Jacob for Rachel. That he was willing to work for Rachel a total of 21 years before he would leave Laban’s house in Syria and return to the land of promise, the land that the Lord Himself had already promised Abraham and his seed more than five times.

Jacob made the first agreement with Laban his uncle that he would work seven years for Rachel. Laban didn’t keep his part of the agreement under the excuse that in that part of the world you must marry your oldest daughter first.

Laban lied and cheated Jacob. But Jacob loved Rachel so much that he was willing to work another seven years for Laban in order to marry Rachel.

Then Laban cheated Jacob a third time and essentially didn’t give him any of the financial proceeds from his 14 years of work. So, Jacob agreed to work another seven years to produce some wealth so that he would not take his large family without some financial security to the land of Canaan.

Here is the secret of Jacob’s wealth, a wealth that he would take with him to the land of Canaan, the land promised to his grandfather Abraham, to his father Isaac, and also to himself in that vision of the ladder that stood on the ground and reached to heavens, and the angels of the Lord went up and down that ladder. On that occasion God repeated to Jacob some of the very same promises that The Lord promised to Abraham.

So, what was the secret of Jacob’s wealth that he made when working for Laban his uncle? Jacob comes to Laban his uncle and his father-in-law, and says,

“And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, ‘Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my country. Give me my wives and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you.’” – Genesis 30:25,26 [NKJV]

Laban, Rebecca’s brother and Jacob’s uncle, had a good thing going. Jacob worked for Laban 14 years to just take Rachel and Leah for his wife.

Laban didn’t want to let Jacob go with his daughters and with his grandchildren. But even more grave than this was the Laban didn’t want to have Jacob produce wealth for him.

But, Jacob is not a bad businessman. Remember that Jacob was a good businessman that purchased the inheritance of Esau for a bowl of soup.

So, here is the deal that Jacob makes with Laban so that he could leave with his wives and his grandchildren and with wealth so great that Jacob presented before Esau in order to save his family and return home to the land of Canaan!

In Genesis 30:28, Laban, who was a known trickster, says to Jacob, “name your price and I will pay you!” Jacob’s response is very interesting and extremely wise with divine wisdom:

“So he said, ‘What shall I give you? Name your price and I will give you!’ And Jacob said, ‘You shall not give me anything. If you will do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep your flocks: Let me pass through all your flock today, removing from there all the speckled and spotted sheep, and all the brown ones among the lambs, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and these shall be my wages. So my righteousness will answer for me in time to come, when the subject of my wages comes before you: every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs, will be considered stolen, if it is with me.’ And Laban said, ‘Oh, that it were according to your word!’” – Genesis 30:31-34 [NKJV]

Here is Jacob’s divine wisdom and understanding of the genetics of sheep. Jacob puts his trust in the faithfulness of God’s promises and the oath that he made to the Lord after the dream of the Ladder from Heaven to Earth.

Jacob made a choice – a hard choice but a wise choice. It is better to trust the Lord to provide for me and my family than to be a recipient of charity from fellow men!

Jacob chooses to received the rare sheep and goats in Laban’s flock, “the speckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the lambs.” From these more rare animals in the flocks of Laban, Jacob was able to increase his flocks and became a wealthy man.

He gains the right to leave Laban’s house with his wives and wealth in sheep and goats, and through the blessings of the Lord Jacob is now ready to leave Syria and Laban’s household, and go back to the land promised by God Himself to his grandfather Abraham, and his father Isaac, and to himself. Here is Jacob’s secret of success:

“And He said, ‘Lift your eyes now and see, all the rams which leap on the flocks are streaked, speckled, and gray-spotted; for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you. I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.’” – Genesis 31:12,13 [NKJV]

The lesson from Jacob’s story is this! When people, even people who are your family, take advantage of your goodness and your kindness, the Lord sees these evil actions, and even if we have fallen into the hands of evil people, the Lord is faithful to His children to reward their good deeds, but He is also dedicated to give the evil people and the dishonest people their proper payment.

Every Shabbat we sing right in the beginning of our prayer service the prayer song that in Hebrew is called, “Yigdal.” In English the name of this prayer song is “The Increase!”

This song is attributed to Maimonides, a great medical doctor, rabbi, and commentator of many Jewish rabbinical books. These are some of the words from the “Yigdal” of Maimonides songs:

“God repays each righteous person for his actions, and punishes the wicked in proportion to their wickedness.”

I confess that in my lifetime and during the 57 years of ministry mostly in Israel, I have seen these words from the Yigdal prayer in reality. We must not only think of learning “theology” and “religious” rules and regulations from God’s word.

The main thing that we ought to learn from God’s word is to understand the Lord Himself and the way that He relates to us as His children, and How He works among us, His children. But we also ought to learn how we, as God’s children live and work and serve the Creator of the Universe.

The last point from this reading of the Shabbat song that God rewards the righteous according to their righteousness, and punishes the wicked according to their wickedness. God is always faithful to keep His promises for both the righteous and the wicked.

The story of the patriarchs is a real school for good people who make mistakes and God’s grace expiates the mistakes and sins of the righteous. We also see in the stories of the patriarchs the rules and instructions of how we ought to live our lives and act so that we would be in the favor of God’s grace and goodness.

I pray that I and you too will read the word of God to learn about how to live and do good and be a blessing for the people around us, and for our families, children, and grandchildren. The Torah is a book for the education of our souls.

Marcia and I are in the Tel Aviv Ben Gurion airport getting ready to fly to the USA. We are totally relying on the Lord’s grace and healing.

I received news today that our dear brother Keijo Lindeman is in the hospital in Tampere, Finland. He went in for an angiogram to open an artery, and after the procedure he had massive bleeding and was taken back to the surgery room. Please pray for our dear brother Keijo Lindeman and his dear wife sister Salme.

We don’t use the word saints often when we talk about our brothers and sisters. If you read in the New Testament and pay attention to the use of the word saints I am sure that you will be surprised to find out that ordinary brothers and sisters in the faith were called saints.

If we really believe the word of God we must reorganize our minds and restore our true calling and mission to be saints and act saintly. The very Greek stoic pagan worldview that we are incorrigible, hopeless sinners – nogoodniks – must be changed.

Maybe before the Messiah redeemed us we were hopeless sinners. If we continue to have this kind of down and depressed mindset our hope in the Messiah is in vain. How can we be hopeless, always stressing how we are sinners wondering this fruitless barren land?

No, dear brothers, we are the King’s children. We have an eternal inheritance that rust and moths cannot destroy. Please pray intensely for Keijo and Salme Lindeman. They are true saints, that only when we gather at the silvery sea will we know what this family did for the Kingdom of God and Israel.

I am asking for special prayer for both of us, but especially for Marcia my wife. Marcia is doing better but she still has issues with the dizziness and instability.

This trip to the USA is especially important for Marcia because we were not there when her mother died. For many years the celebration of Thanksgiving was a central point for the family to gather and celebrate together.

This is the first year that Thanksgiving will be a memorial celebration for Marcia’s family to remember and celebrate their dear mother. Please, pray for Marcia and for ease and safety and a problem-free flight and arrival in Tennessee.

My eye still needs prayer! I still have to take medication and will have to do so for at least another year. The cornea that was transplanted in my eye is from a donor and there is always the danger of rejection.

Please continue praying for the Christian brothers and sisters who are left in Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban. These brothers and sisters are in grave physical danger for their lives. The more time that passes, the more the condition of our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan is not getting better.

Danah my daughter and Noaam my granddaughter need special prayer.

Please keep praying for Steve (Asher) Mock, one of my disciples, a man of God, who had a CVA (stroke) and was in the ICU. Now Steve Mock is at home, but with big challenges in his speech and mobility.

Our dear friend Mahmud Abu-Eid’s sister Gouzlan is very sick, and also Mahmud’s mother needs our prayers. The Abu-Eid family is one of the finest and dearest families of Palestinian friends and soul brothers that we have. Please lift them up in your prayers.

Please pray also for Jimmy, the son of the Abu-Eid family. He is getting married in a week and needs our prayer and blessing in this marriage.

Keep the Israeli government in your prayers. There is much problems with this new government, but it is democratically-elected and it is in the process of passing a budget, something that we have not had for the last three years.

The hate-mongering that is going on between the previous government and this new very complex government that we have now is just coming from the pit. If this hate and discord does not stop our very existence in this part of the world is in danger.

Pray for Israel, for the left wing, the middle, and the right wing, and above and below. Pray for Jews and Arabs and for the Druze population of Israel.

I beg God for mercy on His people and on His land. Stand with Israel in every forum and every pulpit and every occasion.

The future of Christianity doesn’t depend on Rome, Constantinople, or Tulsa, Oklahoma. The future of God’s people worldwide depends on the fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel and the return of the Messiah to Jerusalem, the New Jerusalem.

Pray and support Netivyah during these very hard times, for opportunities to do good and to bless and feed and support the population of Israel, those in need whose number has increased by many percentage points during these difficult days in Israel.

Pray for our opportunities to do good and to be a blessing to the needy population in Jerusalem, and to believers who are students at the universities. God gives opportunities of joy and privilege and every opportunity that the Lord gives us to do good and to be a blessings, is also a test of our judgement and charity.

A test of our judgment is to make choices that are going to be a blessing to the most important and the most effective good works of God, in God’s name. The test of our charity is to give generously and with a good heart in order to honor our Lord and to show our faithfulness. Stand with us and enjoy the blessings!

It is very very seldom that I appeal for financial support for Netivyah. However, the situation with the Coronavirus in Israel like in the whole world has opened opportunities to do good and bless people (not only disciples of Yeshua) and to share the love and care of the Lord in a tangible way that is second to none.

The Lord has always been faithful to supply our needs. He has also been precise and provided what we need, not too little and not too much.

The Hamotzi food distribution program is going in full capacity during the holiday season and generously giving wonderful food, to over 150 families who are referred to us by the social Department of City Hall of Jerusalem. These families will have no lack on their holiday tables and their families will be able to bless the Lord for His mercy endures forever through your contributions and generosity.

The needs in the neighborhoods of Jerusalem are growing because of the unemployment of this coronavirus period and the needs of these dear people are growing. In order to supply the increased number of families that we are helping, we need the Lord to impress you, our dear brothers around the world, to also increase your prayers for Jerusalem and take advantage of the opportunities that the Lord is giving you.

Remember Tony and Louisa Tam, and our brothers and sisters at the 611 Church, and the other churches who love God and love Israel in that great city. Remember in your prayers the Cohen family in Hong Kong.

I am asking for you to pray for a dear sister Ema in China. She is a wonderful and very dear servant of the Lord and is in special need of much prayer and guidance from God.

Just a word of grace before the mercy seat of the Almighty will be heard in favor of these brothers and Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and his family, Keijo and Salme our dear brothers in Finland, Tim Tucker, Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami our dear sister and all our other brothers and sisters in Finland who need our prayers, Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia and Victor, and Aaron Tani, and Hillel and his wife.

Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.

Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relation to the Coronavirus pandemic.

I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.

From our congregation in Jerusalem, we ask you to join us in prayer for the following dear brothers and sisters: Gary, Melanie, Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby.

Pray for some dear friends, Rabbi Salt, and his family and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

I would like to ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Please pray for our two grandchildren. They are both graduating in a few weeks from high school. They are both facing this important change in their lives. Noam our granddaughter also had her 18th birthday on May 1st. This was a very big day for Noam. She is free from high school and also from other obligations and is privileged to make her own decisions and choices in life. Pray for Noam on this major crossroad of life for her and ask the Lord to bless Noam and to give her clear direction and guidance for what is good and right and holy in her life.

Both Noam and Joseph, our two grandchildren, are extremely talented and good students. Both are “A” students and excellent young people, but both need divine protection and guidance to make good and smart and right choices for life.

When I was 18 years old and cut off from my family because of my faith in the Messiah, I had no one on my side and no one to guide me. The Lord’s providential leading and guidance was the only guide that I had. I praise the Lord for His goodness and direction in my life.

One last prayer request for this week. You will think that I am crazy and you will want to commit me to the “funny farm.” I am now teaching four days per week three hours each day in Harare, Zimbabwe, in what is called Yeshua College. In fact my title is “Academic Dean!”

All the students are from the Lemba tribe in Africa, they are all פastors and leaders in congregations. The challenge is enormous and the load for a 75-year-old man with high mileage for 60 years is also enormous. The need is also enormous and taking upon myself this load is crazy enough for a younger more capable man.

For an old one-eyed Jew it is more than enormous! It requires divine grace and strength and health and every other kind of physical and spiritual vitamin. This project was started and inspired and is financed by a dear friend who also needs our prayer.

Just pray for Joseph Shulam and for our dear friend R.W. Ask the Lord to bless him and his family and his work.
 

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
