예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 9월 15일

파라샷 하아지누는 신명기 32장입니다. 우리는 일 년 주기 토라 읽기의 끝에 다다르고 있습니다.
우리는 모세오경의 끝에 이르고 있습니다. 유대 민간력으로 한 해는 끝났고 토라를 읽는 주기는 숙콧(장막절) 끝에 끝납니다. 숙콧 마지막 날은 토라 읽기가 새로 시작되는 날이기도 합니다. 우리는 신명기의 마지막 장들을 읽고서 곧바로 토라 두루마리의 처음으로 가서 다시 창세기 1장을 읽으면서 새로 토라 읽기를 시작합니다. 매년 반복되는 이 운동은 영적으로 아주 큰 의미가 있고, 전 세계적으로 이스라엘 온 민족과 연결되어 있는 것입니다. 신명기 32장은 사실 법정의 심리입니다. 하나님께서 원고, 이스라엘이 피고, 하늘과 땅이 재판관들이며, 일단의 증인들이 있습니다. 바울의 신학과 열방(이방인)에 대한 사명은, 대단한 논증법으로 그의 신학을 간결히 제시하는 그의 역작 로마서를 보면, 모두 바로 이 신명기 32장 포션에 근거하고 있고 힘입고 있습니다. 바울은 하나님께서 아브라함과 아브라함의 씨를 이스라엘 민족의 조상과, 모든 믿는 자들 및 예슈아의 충성된 제자들의 조상이 되도록 선택하신 하나님의 의를 보임으로써 유대민족을 정당화하고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 다시 말씀드리지만, 파라샷 하아지누(“이것을 들으라”)는 이스라엘 백성이 요단강을 건너기 직전, 모세가 홀로 올라가 육신으로는 다시는 내려오지 않을 호렙(비스가)산에 오르기 직전, 이스라엘 백성에게 제시하는 표제 구절입니다. 네, 기독교인들은 하나님께서 그분의 은혜로 모세가 육체로는 아니지만 요단강을 건너도록 허락하셨다는 것을 아셔야 합니다. 모세도 엘리야도 예슈아를 만나러 변화산에 왔었으니까요. 우리 모두가 가져야 할 목표는 하나님의 말씀(특히 신명기 32장)을 읽고 이스라엘 및 이스라엘의 열방(이방인)과의 관계에 대한 하나님의 계획을 분별하는 것입니다. 저는 이 모세의 노래 도입부에서 몇 가지를 짧게 언급하여 하나님의 이스라엘과의 관계, 특별히 이스라엘의 우상숭배와 불성실에 관한 핵심에 이르고 싶습니다. 1. 하나님께서는 그분의 고소를 듣도록 하늘과 땅을 정의의 법정에 초대하십니다! 2. 모세는 하나님의 의와 오랜 세월 이스라엘을 공정히 대우하신 것을 말하면서하나님의 소송을 확인하며 증언합니다. a. “내가 여호와의 이름을 전파하리니 너희는 우리 하나님께 위엄을 돌릴지어다. b. 그는 반석이시니 그가 하신 일이 완전하고 그의 모든 길이 정의롭고 진실하고 거짓이 없으신 하나님이시니 공의로우시고 바르시도다. c. 그들이 여호와를 향하여 악을 행하니 하나님의 자녀가 아니요 흠이 있고 삐뚤어진 세대로다. d. 어리석고 지혜 없는 백성아 여호와께 이같이 보답하느냐 그는 네 아버지시요 너를 지으신 이가 아니시냐 그가 너를 만드시고 너를 세우셨도다.” – 신명기 32:3-6 3. 하나님께서는 이스라엘에게 그분께서 어떻게 이스라엘을 선택하시고, 어떻게 바벨탑이 무너질 때 생겨난 다른 모든 민족들과는 시작이 다른 한 민족을 만드셨는지 설명하십니다. 하나님께서 민족들을 나누시고 이스라엘(야곱)을 그분의 기업으로 선택하실 때 아브라함의 씨는 없었습니다! a. “옛날을 기억하라 역대의 연대를 생각하라 네 아버지에게 물으라 그가 네게 설명할 것이요 네 어른들에게 물으라 그들이 네게 말하리로다. b. 지극히 높으신 자가 민족들에게 기업을 주실 때에, 인종을 나누실 때에 이스라엘 자손의 수효대로 백성들의 경계를 정하셨도다. c. 여호와의 분깃은 자기 백성이라 야곱은 그가 택하신 기업이로다.” – 신명기 32:7-9 4. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 민족과의 오랜 관계 속에서 그분께서 이스라엘을 얼마나 잘, 그리고 얼마나 특별하게 대우하셨는지 설명하십니다. a. “여호와께서 그를 황무지에서, 짐승이 부르짖는 광야에서 만나시고 호위하시며 보호하시며 자기의 눈동자 같이 지키셨도다. b. 마치 독수리가 자기의 보금자리를 어지럽게 하며 자기의 새끼 위에 너풀거리며 그의 날개를 펴서 새끼를 받으며 그의 날개 위에 그것을 업는 것 같이, c. 여호와께서 홀로 그를 인도하셨고 그와 함께 한 다른 신이 없었도다. d. 여호와께서 그가 땅의 높은 곳을 타고 다니게 하시며 밭의 소산을 먹게 하시며 반석에서 꿀을, 굳은 반석에서 기름을 빨게 하시며 e. 소의 엉긴 젖과 양의 젖과 어린 양의 기름과 바산에서 난 숫양과 염소와 지극히 아름다운 밀을 먹이시며 또 포도즙의 붉은 술을 마시게 하셨도다.” – 신명기 32:10-14 5. 이스라엘은 주님을 발로 차고, 주님께 감사하거나 존경하지도 않으며 주님께 충분히 감사를 표하지도 충성스럽게 주님과 동행하지도 않았습니다. a. “그런데 여수룬이 기름지매 발로 찼도다 네가 살찌고 비대하고 윤택하매 자기를 지으신 하나님을 버리고 자기를 구원하신 반석을 업신여겼도다. b. 그들이 다른 신으로 그의 질투를 일으키며 가증한 것으로 그의 진노를 격발하였도다. c. 그들은 하나님께 제사하지 아니하고 귀신들에게 하였으니 곧 그들이 알지 못하던 신들, 근래에 들어온 새로운 신들 너희의 조상들이 두려워하지 아니하던 것들이로다. d. 너를 낳은 반석을 네가 상관하지 아니하고 너를 내신 하나님을 네가 잊었도다.” – 신명기 32:15-18 6. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 자손에게 그분의 분노를 보이시고, 이스라엘의 어리석음을 바로잡기 위해 마련하신 일을 행하시며, 이방인들, 열방을 사용하여 이스라엘을 시기 나게 하시어 이스라엘을 회복시키실 것입니다. a. “그러므로 여호와께서 보시고 미워하셨으니 그 자녀가 그를 격노하게 한 까닭이로다. b. 그가 말씀하시기를 내가 내 얼굴을 그들에게서 숨겨 그들의 종말이 어떠함을 보리니 그들은 심히 패역한 세대요 진실이 없는 자녀임이로다. c. 그들이 하나님이 아닌 것으로 내 질투를 일으키며 허무한 것으로 내 진노를 일으켰으니 나도 백성이 아닌 자로 그들에게 시기가 나게 하며 어리석은 민족으로 그들의 분노를 일으키리로다.” – 신명기 32:19-21 아주 중요한 이 장의 19-21절에서 우리는 바울이 열방의 역할의 중요성을 설명하기 위해 모세의 말을 모형으로 사용한 것에서 바울 신학의 요지를 볼 수 있습니다. (열방 – 선택받은 이스라엘 민족, 즉 이삭과 야곱을 통해 얻은 아브라함의 씨의 일부가 아닌 사람들. 이스라엘 및 예슈아의 삶과 사역을 통해 하나님께 돌아온 열방과 관련된 바울 신학.) 바울은 이스라엘로 시기 나게 할 수단으로서의 열방(이방인)의 사명과, 이것을 통해 이스라엘과 온 세상을 향한 하나님의 구속 계획이 이루어 질 것을 보았습니다. 우리가 지난 1,900년 동안의 기독교 역사를 면밀히 조사하고 이 역사를 들여다보면, 이스라엘이 온 세상의 창조자를 왕으로 모시지도, 그분의 신실함 가운데 행하지도 못한 것만큼, 이방인들도 이스라엘로 시기 나게 하는 일에 처참하게 실패했음을 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 오히려 기독교는 거의 1,900년 되는 기독교 역사 가운데 이스라엘과 유대인에 대한 사랑과 감사를 보여주기보다는 유대인들을 메시아 그리스도에게서 멀어지게 만들었습니다. 사실인즉 이스라엘은 여전히 존재하고 성경의 땅 고향으로 귀향하여 번창하는 국가를 세우고 첨단 기술 분야에서 뛰어난 창업국가로 번영하고 있습니다. 이스라엘은 모든 역경에도 불구하고 모든 이웃국가들의 부러움의 대상이 되는 나라로 성장하고 있습니다. 그런데 아랍인들은, 이스라엘 편에 서서 1,930년의 유배생활에서 귀향하고 있는 유대인들에게서 배우기보다, 이스라엘을 죽이기를 모색하고 있고, 기독교인들은 아직도 전 세계적으로 유대인들에 대한 미움과 배척과 핍박을 보여주고 있습니다. 기독교인들이 사도들의 말을 진지하게 받아들이고 주님의 구속받은 자들로서 주님의 말씀을 받들어 행하게 되려면 기독교인들 가운데 어떤 일이 이루어져야 할까요? 사랑이 우리의 패러다임이며 복음이 모든 기독교 TV 채널에서 우리의 방송이 되려면 기독교권에 무슨 일이 일어나야 할까요? 기독교인들이 예슈아께서 예루살렘으로 재림하시는 것을 기다리면서, 하나님의 아들, 하나님의 메시아, 다윗의 자손, 온 세상의 구속자, 하나님의 자녀인 아담과 이브의 후손 인류를 향한 하나님의 사랑의 화신인 그분의 말씀, 가르침, 요구, 명령을 아주 진지하게 받아들여 왕의 요구를 순종하여 행하지 않는다면, 그분께서 재림하실 때 무슨 일이 일어날까요?! 저는 무슨 일이 일어날지 여러분에게 쓰거나 말할 필요가 없습니다. 그냥 성경에서 예슈아의 말씀을 읽어보십시오. 여러분의 성경 중 어떤 것은 아주 쉬운데요, 그 말씀들이 붉은 색 잉크로 인쇄되어 있기 때문입니다. 여러분은 사실 그냥 여러분의 성경을 펼치기만 하면 됩니다. 신약성경 첫 페이지부터 붉은 색으로 인쇄된 구절을 볼 수 있으니, 그냥 그 붉은 색으로 된 말씀만 읽으시면 됩니다. 저는 여러분이 중요한 계시를 받으리라 믿습니다. 이번 신명기 32장 토라 포션에서 여러분은 이스라엘과 온 세상을 향한 하나님의 거룩한 계획의 간략한 개요 같은 것을 볼 수 있을 것입니다. 여러분은 이스라엘을 위해 그리고 이스라엘을 통해 하나님께서 행하신 일과, 하나님께서 열방이 그분과 그분의 택한 이스라엘을 위해 행하기를 기대하시는 것을 볼 수 있을 것입니다! 그런 다음 여러분은 이것을 로마서 9~11장과 대조하면서 로마서 9~11장에서 신명기 32장 인용구와 언급된 것을 찾아볼 수 있을 것입니다! 친애하는 형제자매님들, 이것이 여러분께 드리는 숙제입니다. 네, 좋은 선생님은 숙제를 내줍니다! 때로는 사람들이 다른 사람들에게서 그다지 많이 배우지 않지만, 종이 위에 잉크로 인쇄된 하나님의 말씀에서 그것이 자기를 위한 것이라고 본다면, 마음속으로 걸러져 거기서부터 손과 발과 주머니까지 흘러가는 어떤 일이 그들의 혼에 일어나, 그들은 그냥 교회 출석자가 아닌 하나님 나라 건설자들이 됩니다. 저는 여기서 그치는 것이 좋을 것 같고, 전 세계에 계시는 여러분 형제자매님들 모두께 이 계절이 기쁨과 소망과 사랑과 강한 믿음의 계절이 되기를 바랍니다. 저는 여러분 형제자매님들 모두가 우리가 사는 세상과 우리 세대와 우리 자녀를 위한 하나님의 구속 계획 속에 여러분의 자리를 보시게 되기를 바랍니다! 신앙 및 종교는 문화도, 게임도, 우리 자신과 같은 사람들과 함께 시간을 보내는 유쾌한 여흥도 아닙니다. 이것은 세상이 하늘나라가 이 땅에 임하는 것에 준비되게 하기 위해 하나님으로부터 오는 도전입니다. 우리는 매일 “주의 나라가 하늘에서 그런 것처럼 땅에도 임하시옵소서!” 기도합니다.(직접 마태복음 6:9-13을 읽어보십시오.) 저는 이번 안식일에 선지서에서 읽는 부분에 대해서는 아무 말씀도 드리지 않았습니다. 전 세계 회당에서는 사무엘하 22:1-51을 읽을 것입니다. 회당에서 신명기 32장 토라 포션 다음에 읽는 이 말씀은 아주 흥미로운 조합을 이룹니다. 토라 포션이 노래 시구로 쓴 것처럼 이 본문 말씀도 시편 외의 시, 다윗의 노래입니다. 다윗은 모세가 이스라엘이 행하지 않기 때문에 이스라엘을 비난한 바로 그것을 되뇌며 고백하고 있습니다! 다윗왕은 성경에서 큰 죄인 중 한 명이지만, 다윗과 성경의 다른 죄인들 사이의 차이점은 다윗은 그의 죄를 고백하고 회개하기 위해 최선을 다했다는 것입니다. 사무엘하 22장에 기록된 이 시는 그의 생애 말에 쓴 시입니다. 그는 그의 원수들과의 전쟁에서는 승리해왔지만 그의 집에서 그의 자녀와의 전쟁에서는 패배한 지친 노인입니다. 다윗은 진퇴유곡에 빠져 겸비해졌고 이 순간 그가 할 수 있는 최선은 하나님의 위대하심과 인간 다윗왕의 연약함에 대한 하나님의 긍휼을 고백하는 노래를 짓는 것입니다. 이 하나님의 위대하심과 긍휼은 다윗을 통해 우리 모두에게, 우리가 우리 하늘 아버지, 온 세상의 창조주, 우리를 대속하여 아버지께 회복시키기 위해 보내신 우리 메시아 예슈아와 맺은 관계에 반영되는 위대하심과 긍휼입니다! 여기서 우리는 온 인류를 의미합니다! 욤 키푸르(속죄일) 직후 이번 안식일에 회당들에서 읽을 다윗의 노래의 시작 구절은 이렇습니다. “여호와께서 다윗을 모든 원수의 손과 사울의 손에서 구원하신 그 날에 다윗이 이 노래의 말씀으로 여호와께 아뢰어 이르되 여호와는 나의 반석이시요 나의 요새시요 나를 위하여 나를 건지시는 자시오 내가 피할 나의 반석의 하나님이시요 나의 방패시요 나의 구원의 뿔이시요 나의 높은 망대시요 그에게 피할 나의 피난처시요 나의 구원자시라 나를 폭력에서 구원하셨도다.” – 사무엘하 22:1-3 저는 제 자신의 어려움과 도전과 연약함 가운데 자문해야 할 것입니다: “요셉 슐람, 너는 다윗의 입장이라면 다윗의 말을 그 뜻 그대로 네 자신의 것으로 말할 수 있겠니?” 친애하는 형제자매님들, 저의 대답은 주저함 없이, “그렇다”일 것입니다! 저는 이 구절을 말하며 주님께서 나의 반석, 요새, 건지시는 분, 나의 하나님, 피난처, 망대, 나를 폭력에서 여러 번 구원하시는 분이 아니시라면, 나는 아무 것도 아닐 것이며 완전히 쓸모없는 인간일 것이라는 것을 고백할 수 있습니다! 제 일생과 제 아내의 일생은 지붕 위의 바이올린에 불과합니다. 나의 보장과 나의 지난 날의 실체와 영원한 미래에 대한 나의 소망이라는 다윗왕의 그 말 말고는 아무 것도 안정적이지 않고 아무 것도 견고하거나 안전하지 않습니다! 저는 여러분도 똑같이 말할 수 있기를 바라고 기도합니다! 이번 토라 포션에 저의 처지와 아마도 여러분의 처지와 우리를 위한 하나님의 행동을 묘사하는 한 구절이 있습니다! “참으로 여호와께서 자기 백성을 판단하시고 그 종들을 불쌍히 여기시리니 곧 그들의 무력함과 갇힌 자나 놓인 자가 없음을 보시는 때에로다.” – 신명기 32:36 멋진 가을 절기를 보내시며 경축하시기 바랍니다!

여러분의 기도에 이스라엘 정부를 기억해 주십시오. 코로나바이러스가 이스라엘에서 다시 창궐하며 새로운 변이가 전국에 걸쳐 확산되고 있습니다. 사람들은 3차 백신을 맞고 있지만, 상황이 진정되는 데는 몇 주 걸릴 것입니다.
우리는 모두 주님께서 이 전염병을 멈춰주시도록 기도해야 하는데요, 우선 무엇보다 하나님과 그분의 율법과 규례를 아는 유대인과 기독교인들이 기도하고 회개하고 주님을 구하고 긍휼을 간구하며, 우리가 성경에서 읽는 다른 모든 전염병에 대해 주님께서 하셨던 것처럼 이 전염병을 멈춰주시기를 구해야 합니다.
주님께서 그렇게 하실 수 있으시니, 우리는 하나님께 그분의 세상에 대한 긍휼을 베풀어주시도록 중보하며 간구해야 합니다. 이런 일은 오직 기독교인들과 유대인들의 지도자들이 죄를 고백하고 회개할 때에만 일어날 수 있습니다.
욤 하키푸림(속죄일)이 지금 진행 중이고 닷새 후에는 장막절입니다. 9월 대부분이 절기입니다!
이 절기들이 이 민족에 영적으로 큰 의미가 있는 것은 이 절기들이 심판날과, 우리 죄의 회개와, 마지막으로 하나님의 은혜에 대한 경축과 이 물리적 세계에서 우리의 연약함의 고백과, 사회의 모든 부분, 선과 악과 추함(도덕적 형사적 추함)과도 하나되고 협력해야 하는 필요성에 초점이 맞춰져 있기 때문입니다.
유대인 사회 말고는 세상에 그 어느 곳에서도 이와 같은 것은 없습니다. 예슈아의 제자들인 우리는 하나님의 거룩한 말씀으로 다시 회복되는 과정의 일부가 되는 것이 아주 큰 특권이라고 여깁니다.
이번 욤 키푸르는 저희가 40여 년 만에 처음으로 집에서 조촐히 보내게 될 것입니다. 저희 회중은, 코로나바이러스 규칙과 그저 일반적인 지식으로 부과한 제제 때문에, 매년 하듯이 다같이 모이는 집회를 하지 못합니다.
저희는 이 절기들 동안 파푸아, 아시아, 핀란드, 그리고 세계 여러 곳에서 말씀을 가르치기로 예정되어 있으므로 네티비야의 저희를 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 저희가 전 세계를 전염시키고 있는 이 코로나바이러스의 미친 시절에 전 세계에 있는 우리 형제님들에게 옳은 일을 하며, 그들에게 필요한 영적 비타민을 줄 수 있으려면 하나님의 은혜와 힘과 지혜가 필요합니다.
아주 힘든 이 때에 네티비야를 위해, 이스라엘 사람들에게 선을 행하며 그들을 축복하고 먹이고 지지해줄 기회를 위해 기도하고 후원해 주십시오. 이스라엘에서 이 어려운 시절에 어려움에 처한 이들의 수가 몇 배로 늘었습니다.

저희는 예슈아의 유대인 및 아랍인 제자들이 대학교에서 수학할 수 있게 하는 장학금을 줄이지 않으려고 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 저희는 저희 차세대 제자들의 기준을 세우는 것이 최우선이라고 믿습니다.
인도와 브라질에는 아직도 코로나바이러스로 아주 심각한 어려움 가운데 있어 우리의 기도가 필요한 형제자매님들이 많이 있습니다. 우리는 인도와 브라질을 위해, 특히 이 두 나라에 있는 우리 형제자매들을 위해 계속 기도해야 합니다.
주님께서는 기도에 응답하시고 의인들의 기도를 들으시지만, 우리는 우리 형제자매들을 위해서 그리고 각자의 나라와 사역을 위해서 우리 기도를 아뢰어야 합니다. 심지어 우리 원수를 위한 기도도 하나님 말씀의 명령입니다.
그러니, 혹시 있다면 여러분 개인의 원수를 위해, 특별히 이란이나 가자지구 하마스나 가자지구 및 레바논의 헤즈볼라 같은 이스라엘의 원수들이며 테러 국가인 자들을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 이것이 중요한 이유는 여러분이 이들 원수들의 선을 위해 기도할 때 여러분이 사실은 그들 머리에 달군 숯불을 쌓는 것이기 때문입니다. (로마서 12장 끝부분 참조.)

The Jerusalem Prayer List – September 15, 2021

Parashat Ha’azinu is chapter 32 of the book of Deuteronomy. We are approaching the end of our yearly reading cycle.
We are getting to the end of the Pentateuch reading. The Jewish traditional year is finished and the end of the Torah reading cycle is at the end of the Feast of Sukkot (Tabernacles). The last day of the Feast of Sukkot is also the beginning of a new reading circle of the Torah. We read the last chapters of Deuteronomy and immediately roll the Torah scroll back to the beginning and start reading Genesis chapter 1 to start a new cycle of reading from Genesis 1:1. This move that is repeated every year is of such a great spiritual meaning, and also connection with the whole nation of Israel, worldwide. Chapter 32 of the book of Deuteronomy is actually a court hearing. God is the plaintiff, Israel is the accused, the Heavens and the Earth are the judges, and there are a set of witnesses. Paul’s theology and mission to the nations (Gentiles) is all based on and empowered by this reading of Deuteronomy Chapter 32, if you look at Paul’s letter to the Romans, that is Paul’s opus magnum, his concise presentation of his theology with no small touch of polemics. Paul wants to justify the Jewish nation by demonstration of the righteousness of God in the choice that He made of Abraham and the seed of Abraham to be the father of the nation of Israel and the father of all the believers and faithful disciples of Yeshua. So, I repeat, Parashat Ha’azinu (“Hear this”) is a programmatic text that Moses presents to the people of Israel just before they cross the Jordan River, and He, Moses, climbs Moint Horeb (Pisgah) alone, never to come down from there in the flesh. Yes, Christians ought to realize that God, in His grace, did allow Moses to cross the river Jordan, but not in his flesh. Both Moses and Elijah come to meet Yeshua on the Mount of Transfiguration. The goal that we all have is to read the word of God (especially chapter 32 of Deuteronomy) and discern God’s plan for Israel and its relationship with the nations (the Gentiles). I would like to just mention a few short points of the opening of this Song of Moses and get to the core of the relationship of God with Israel, and especially with Israel’s idolatry and unfaithfulness. 1. God is inviting the Heavens and the Earth to hear His complaints in the court of justice! 2. Moses identifies and witnesses God’s case by stating His righteousness and His just treatment of Israel over the years. a. “For I proclaim the name of the Lord: Ascribe greatness to our God. b. He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He. c. They have corrupted themselves; They are not His children, Because of their blemish: A perverse and crooked generation. d. Do you thus deal with the Lord, O foolish and unwise people? Is He not your Father, who bought you? Has He not made you and established you?” – Deuteronomy 32:3-6 [NKJV] 3. God explains to Israel how He has chosen Israel and created a nation that has a different beginning from all the other nations that were created in the falling of the tower of Babylon. Abraham’s seed was not there when God divided the nations and chose Israel (Jacob) to become His inheritance! a. “Remember the days of old, Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; Your elders, and they will tell you: b. When the Most High divided their inheritance to the nations, When He separated the sons of Adam, He set the boundaries of the peoples According to the number of the children of Israel. c. For the Lord’s portion is His people; Jacob is the place of His inheritance.” – Deuteronomy 32:7-9 [NKJV] 4. God lists how well and how special He treated and took care of Israel throughout His long relationship with the nation of Israel. a. “He found him in a desert land And in the wasteland, a howling wilderness; He encircled him, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. b. As an eagle stirs up its nest, Hovers over its young, Spreading out its wings, taking them up, Carrying them on its wings, c. So the Lord alone led him, And there was no foreign god with him. d. He made him ride in the heights of the earth, That he might eat the produce of the fields; He made him draw honey from the rock, And oil from the flinty rock; e. Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs; And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, With the choicest wheat; And you drank wine, the blood of the grapes.” – Deuteronomy 32:10-14 [NKJV] 5. Israel spurned the Lord and didn’t appreciate or respect Him enough to show appreciation or walk faithfully with the Lord. a. “But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked; You grew fat, you grew thick, You are obese! Then he forsook God who made him, And scornfully esteemed the Rock of his salvation. b. They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods; With abominations they provoked Him to anger. c. They sacrificed to demons, not to God, To gods they did not know, To new gods, new arrivals That your fathers did not fear. d. Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, And have forgotten the God who fathered you.” – Deuteronomy 32:15-18 [NKJV] 6. God is going to do something to show the children of Israel His anger and His provision for correcting Israel’s folly and restore Israel by using the Gentiles, the Nations, to provoke Israel to jealousy. a. “And when the Lord saw it, He spurned them, Because of the provocation of His sons and His daughters. b. And He said: “I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end will be, For they are a perverse generation, Children in whom is no faith. c. They have provoked Me to jealousy by what is not God; They have moved Me to anger by their foolish idols. But I will provoke them to jealousy by those who are not a nation; I will move them to anger by a foolish nation.” – Deuteronomy 32:19-21 [NKJV] In verses 19-21 of this very important chapter we see the capsule of Paul’s theology as he uses the matrix of these words of Moses to explain the importance of the role of the nations. (The Nations – those who are not a part of the seed of Abraham, through Isaac and Jacob, the chosen nation of Israel. The relationship of Paul’s theology of Israel and the relationship with the nations that are turning to God through the life and work of Yeshua.) Paul sees the mission to the nations (Gentiles) as a tool to provoke Israel to jealousy, and by doing this bring about the fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan for Israel, and the whole world. If we examine the history of Christianity in the last 1900 years, and look on this history, we will see that just as much as Israel failed to crown the Creator of the World as King and walk in His faithfulness, the Gentiles have failed miserably to provoke Israel to Jealousy. On the contrary, Christianity has driven Jews away from Christ the Messiah, instead of showing love and appreciation for Israel and the Jews, in the nearly 1900 years of Christian history. The fact is that Israel still exists, and is returning back home to the land of the Bible, building a successful state, excelling in high-tech as a start-up nation. The fact that Israel is growing a country against all odds ought to be the envy of the whole neighborhood. But instead of standing with Israel and learning from the Jews who are returning home after 1,930 years of exile – the Arabs are seeking to kill us, and the Christians are still exhibiting hate and rejection and persecution of Jews worldwide. What should be done among Christians so that they take the words of the apostles seriously and the words of our Lord and act as the redeemed of the Lord. What has to happen in the Christian world so that love would be our paradigm and Good News would be our broadcast on every Christian TV channel? If Christians are waiting for the return of Yeshua to Jerusalem, if they are not taking the words and teachings and demands and commandments of the Son of God, the divine Messiah, the Son of David, the Redeemer of the world, the embodiment of God’s love for His children, the sons of Adam and Eve, the human race, seriously enough, to obey and do the King’s requests, what will happen when He returns?! I don’t have to write or tell you what will happen just read the words of Yeshua in your bibles. In some of your bibles it is easy because they are the words in your bible that are printed in red ink. You actually ought to do just this, just open up your bible in the New Testament, start from the first page where you see text printed in red, and just read only the words that are in red. I believe that you will receive an important revelation. In our Torah portion from Deuteronomy chapter 32, you will find a kind of short outline of God’s divine plan for Israel and for the world. You will see what God did for Israel and through Israel and what God expects the nations to do for Him and for Israel, His chosen! You can than compare this with Romans chapters 9-11, and find the quotations of and allusions to chapter 32 of Deuteronomy in Romans chapters 9-11! This is homework for you dear brothers and sisters. Yes, a good teacher gives homework! Sometimes people don’t learn from others very much, but if they see it for themselves in God’s word, ink on paper, something happens in their mind that filters down to their hearts and from there starts flowing to their hands, and feet, and pockets and they become Kingdom-of-God-builders and not just church attendees. I better stop here and wish you all, my brothers and sisters around the world, a season of joy, hope, love, and a good measure of strong faith. I wish you all my brothers and sisters that you see your place in God’s plan of redemption for our world, for our generation, and for your children’s sake! Faith and religion is not a culture, or a game, or a pleasant pasttime with people who are just like ourselves. It is a challenge from God to make the world ready for the Kingdom of Heaven down here on Earth. We pray every day, “Your Kingdom come down on Earth as it is in Heaven!” (Read for yourselves Matthew 6:9-13.) I’ve said nothing about the reading from the prophets this Shabbat. The synagogues around the world will be reading from 2 Samuel 22:1-51. This text, which is read in the synagogues following the reading from the Torah from Deuteronomy 32, makes for a very interesting combination. Like the Torah reading that is written in verse (song), so this text is David’s song, a Psalm that is outside of the book of Psalms. David is echoing and confessing the very thing that Moses is condemning Israel for not doing! King David is one of the biggest sinners in the Bible, but the difference between David and other sinners in the Bible is that David confessed his sins and did his best to repent. In this Psalm recorded in 2 Samuel chapter 22, David is at the end of his life. He is a tired old man who has been victorious in his battles against his enemies, but has lost the battle with his children and in his home. Now at the end of his rope, David is humbled and the best thing he can do at this point, is to compose a song of confession of God’s greatness and compassion for the weakness of the man King David, and of reflecting by David on us all and on our relationship with our Heavenly Father, the Creator of the world and our Messiah Yeshua who was sent by God to redeem us and restore us to the Father! Us meaning all mankind! Here are the opening words of this Song of David that is read in the synagogues this Sabbath after Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement.) “Then David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, on the day when the Lord had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. And he said: ‘The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence.’” – 2 Samuel 22:1-3 [NKJV] I have to ask myself in my own difficulties and challenges and weaknesses: “Joseph Shulam can you say the words of David in his place and mean every one of these words and make them your own?” My answer would be, without any hesitation: Yes, dear brothers and sisters! I can say and claim these words and confess that without the Lord being my rock, and fortress, and deliverer, God, refuge and fortress, and the one who saved me from violence many times, I would be nothing, and a totally worthless human being! My life and my wife’s life are nothing more than a fiddler on the roof. Nothing is stable, nothing is firm or secure, other than those words of King David that are my security and the reality of my past and my hope for the eternal future! I hope and pray that you can say the same! There is one verse in our Torah reading that describes my situation and probably your situation, and God’s action on our behalf! “For the Lord will judge His people And have compassion on His servants, When He sees that their power is gone, And there is no one remaining, bond or free.” – Deuteronomy 32:36 [NKJV] Have a wonderful fall season and celebrate!
Let us continue and pray for the Christian brothers and sisters who are left in Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban. These brothers and sisters are in grave physical danger for their lives and for their souls.
Please pray for the family of a dear brother from Israel (and from the USA) who died as a result of the coronavirus, Rabbi David Friedman. He left a family and children and grandchildren behind.
Asia Messianic Forum that was held in Zoom and led by our brothers in India, in the state of Goa was a great success. According to reports we had more than 2000 participants on the call. Some say that we had 2000 participants from China alone. I hope that this is true! We are looking forward that in 2023 we would have the Asia Messianic Forum physically face-to-face with our brothers and sisters in one location and the coronavirus will not be a factor at all!
In the name of Peter, Michael, and myself, the Israeli participants and teachers want to express our deep gratitude to the organizers of the Asia Messianic Forum in India and our dear brothers in Japan and all the leaders from Asia who participated. We had some new countries and groups participate this year and our hope is that more new countries and tribes will participate in the next Asia Messianic Forum.
Our dear friend Mahmud Abu-Eid’s sister Gouzlan is very sick, and I ask you to pray for Gouzlan and for Maria Mahmud’s daughter who is getting married in Bulgaria in a few weeks.
Please keep praying for Rebekka Becker’s mother and brother. Pray for a dear sister in Brazil, Artuza de Oliveira. Pray for a very dear family who now lives in Canada, Merv and Merla Watson. They are older and need a good portion of God’s grace for their lives now.
Keep the Israeli government in your prayers. The coronavirus is again raging in our land and the new mutations are spreading throughout the land. People are getting vaccinated with the third vaccine shot, but it will take some weeks for the situation to stabilize.
We must all pray that the Lord will stop this plague, and that first and foremost the Jews and the Christians who ought to know God and His laws and regulations must pray and repent and seek the Lord and beg for mercy, and ask the Lord to stop this plague, like He did every other plague that we read about in the Bible.
He can do it, and we must intercede and beg for God’s mercy over His world. This can only happen if the leadership of both Christians and Jews take to confession and repentance.
Yom HaKippurim (The Day of Atonement) is happening now and in five days is the Feast of Tabernacles. Most of this month of September is holidays!
These holidays have great significance spiritually in this nation, because they focus on the judgment day, and on repentance from our sins, and finally celebration of God’s grace and a confession of our vulnerability in this physical world, and the need for our unity and cooperation with all segments of society, the good, the bad and the ugly (morally and criminally ugly).
There is nothing like this anywhere in the world except in the Jewish communities. As disciples of Yeshua we feel it to be such a privilege to participate and to be a part of the restoration process back to the holy word of God.
This Yom Kippur is the first in more than 40 years that we are going to spend alone at home. Our congregation will not have public meeting like every year because of the restrictions set by the Coronavirus rules and just plain wisdom.
Please pray for us at Netivyah, because we are scheduled to teach in Papua, in Asia, and in Finland, and in other locations around the world during these holidays. We need God’s blessings and strength and wisdom to be able to do the right thing and give our brothers around the world the spiritual vitamins that are needed for this crazy season of Coronavirus plaguing the whole world.
Pray and support Netivyah during these very hard times, for opportunities to do good and to bless and feed and support the population of Israel, those in need whose number has increased by many percentage points during these difficult days in Israel.
Our opportunities to do good and to be a blessing to the needy population in Jerusalem is a God-given opportunity of joy and privilege and it will be your opportunity to be a part of this great ministry that has been faithful and effective and generous to the poor of Jerusalem for near 30 years. The needs of Netivyah for more staff to be able to keep up with the amount of work and the challenges that take both time and money, and to keep up with the needs and the opportunities that God is putting in front of Netivyah.
With the Coronavirus raging wild throughout the world, and in Israel, and with the threat of a new closure, Israel needs much prayer, and Netivyah needs your prayers and your support. We are doing our best not to cut the scholarship funds to Jewish and Arab disciples of Yeshua for study in the universities. We believe that building up the standard of our next generation of disciples is a priority.

We have many dear brothers and sisters in both India and Brazil who are still very much in serious trouble with the coronavirus situation and need our prayers. We need to continue to pray for India and Brazil and especially for our dear brothers and sisters in these two countries.
The Lord answers prayers and hears the prayers of righteous people, but we must speak our prayers before the Lord for the sake of our brothers and sisters and for the sake of our countries and ministries. Even prayer for our enemies is a command of God’s Word.
So, pray for your personal enemies if you have any, and especially for Israel’s enemies and terrorist states like Iran, and the Hamas in Gaza, and the Hizballah in Gaza and Lebanon… This is important, because when you pray for the good of these enemies you are actually heaping hot coal on their head. (See Romans 12, the last verses.)

The Lord has always been faithful to supply our needs. He has also been precise and provided what we need, not too little and not too much.
The Hamotzi food program is restarting with mostly new candidates provided by the city of Jerusalem. Our goal is to simply bless the needy of Jerusalem and make sure that those families with many children and old people, and single mothers, and others, both Jews and a few Arab families, have something fresh and good and healthy to eat. We need your prayers and your help to make this important purely humanitarian service possible. We are following the instruction of Paul in Romans 15:24-27.

Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the Coronavirus pandemic.
I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.

Please pray for our two grandchildren. They are both graduating in a few weeks from high school. They are both facing this important change in their lives. Noam our granddaughter also had her 18th birthday on May 1st. This was a very big day for Noam. She is free from high school and also from other obligations and is privileged to make her own decisions and choices in life. Pray for Noam on this major crossroad of life for her and ask the Lord to bless Noam and to give her clear direction and guidance for what is good and right and holy in her life.
Both Noam and Joseph, our two grandchildren, are extremely talented and good students. Both are “A” students and excellent young people, but both need divine protection and guidance to make good and smart and right choices for life.
When I was 18 years old and cut off from my family because of my faith in the Messiah, I had no one on my side and no one to guide me. The Lord’s providential leading and guidance was the only guide that I had. I praise the Lord for His goodness and direction in my life.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
