예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2022년 2월 17일

저는 매주 전 세계 회당에서 읽는 토라 포션에 대해 가르치며 글을 써오고 있습니다. 매주 토라와 선지서를 읽는 것은 아주 아주 오래된 전통입니다.

우리는 신약성경에서 이 전통이 이스라엘 땅에서도 디아스포라(지중해 분지와 그 너머 전역에 흩어져 있는 유대인 공동체)에서도 행해진 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 다음은 이 전통의 중요성을 보여주는 몇 가지 예입니다:

“또 안식일에 제사장들이 성전 안에서 안식을 범하여도 죄가 없음을 너희가 율법에서 읽지 못하였느냐” – 마태복음 12:5

“예수께서 그 자라나신 곳 나사렛에 이르사 안식일에 늘 하시던 대로 회당에 들어가사 성경을 읽으려고 서시매” – 누가복음 4:16

“예루살렘에 사는 자들과 그들 관리들이 예수와 및 안식일마다 외우는 바 선지자들의 말을 알지 못하므로 예수를 정죄하여 선지자들의 말을 응하게 하였도다.” – 사도행전 13:27

“이는 예로부터 각 성에서 모세를 전하는 자가 있어 안식일마다 회당에서 그 글을 읽음이라 하더라.” – 사도행전 15:21

저희 회중에서는 전 세계 대부분의 예슈아의 유대인 제자들의 회중들과 마찬가지로 안식일에 토라를 읽고 토라 다음에 선지서(아람어로 “하프타라”라고 부릅니다)를 읽고 그 다음에 신약성경에서도 말씀을 읽습니다. 저희가 읽는 모든 본문은 보통 토라와 선지서와 신약성경을 연결시키는 공통된 맥락이 있습니다.

2022년 2월 19일 안식일에 전 세계 모든 회당에서 읽는 부분은 출애굽기 30:11~34:35일 것이며, 이 토라 포션의 이름은 “키 티사”라고 합니다:

“네가 이스라엘 자손의 수효를 조사할 때에 조사 받은 각 사람은 그들을 계수할 때에 자기의 생명의 속전을 여호와께 드릴지니 이는 그들을 계수할 때에 그들 중에 질병이 없게 하려 함이라.” – 출애굽기 30:12

이번 안식일은 특별한 안식일이기 때문에 민수기 19:1-22 말씀을 추가적으로 읽는데요, 이 부분은 “파라”(“암소”)라고 부릅니다. 하프타라(선지서에서 읽는 부분)은 열왕기상 18:1-39과 에스겔 36:16-38이 될 것입니다. 신약성경에서는 고린도후서 3:1-18을 읽을 것입니다.

여러분은 속으로 ‘예루살렘에 있는 메시아의 이 유대인 제자들은 분명 안식일마다 공중에서 아주 많은 분량의 말씀을 읽네.’ 말할지도 모르겠습니다. 맞습니다, 사도들과 저희 조상들이 전 세계에서 그랬던 것처럼 저희는 안식일마다 하나님의 말씀에서 아주 많은 분량의 본문을 읽습니다.

다음은 메시아의 복음을 전파하며 지중해 연안을 여행했던 사도 바울의 경우 몇 가지 예입니다:

“율법과 선지자의 글을 읽은 후에 회당장들이 사람을 보내어 물어 이르되 형제들아 만일 백성을 권할 말이 있거든 말하라 하니” – 사도행전 13:15

“오직 너희가 읽고 아는 것 외에 우리가 다른 것을 쓰지 아니하노니 너희가 완전히 알기를 내가 바라는 것은” – 고린도후서 1:13

“오늘까지 모세의 글을 읽을 때에 …” – 고린도후서 3:15

이제 저는 예루살렘 저희 공동체에서 이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션으로 들어가야 겠습니다.

이스라엘 자손이 약속의 땅 가나안 땅에 들어가 영원한 유업인 그곳에 정착하기까지 신병훈련소 시내 광야에서 시험과 훈련을 받으며 방황한 40년 광야 생활 동안 가장 극적인 두 가지 사건이 있습니다.

이번 토라 포션은 여호와께서 모세에게 이스라엘 자손을 다 계수하고, 또한 회막 곧 제사장들과 이스라엘 자손이 여호와 하나님과 만나는 성막을 건축하라는 명령으로 시작됩니다. 이것은 이스라엘 자손을 위해 설계된 독특한 성전입니다.

이 명령이 있은 직후, 모세가 시내산 정상에서 40 주야 전능하신 하나님으로부터 토라를 받고 있을 동안, 이스라엘 자손은 참을성이 없이 모세의 형인 아론에게 자기들을 인도할 신을 마련해 달라고 재촉합니다.

이것이 이번 안식일 토라 포션에 나오는 성경에서 가장 극적인 사건 중 첫 번째 사건입니다. 이번 토라 포션의 구조에 관한 질문이 제기됩니다: 하나님께서는 왜 모세에게 명하여 이스라엘 자손을 계수하라고 하셨고, 이스라엘 진영 가운데에 그분의 거하실 처소인 성막을 지으라고 하셨나?

제가 생각하는 바는 다음과 같습니다. 여기에서 토라는 아론이 이스라엘 자손의 요청으로 금송아지를 세운 사건 전에 이스라엘 백성을 계수하라는 명령과 회막(성막)을 건축하라는 명령을 가져와 두 가지를 보여주고 있습니다.

1. 하나님께서는 모든 사람을 세시고, 그 마음과 손의 행위와 한 걸음 한 걸음 발이 간 길을 아십니다. 금송아지(이집트의 주요 여신 중 하나인 하토르의 상)를 세우는 것과 같은 집단적 죄가 있을 때, 각 개인은 중요하며 일일이 계수되고 축복을 받거나 각자가 지은 죄에 대한 벌을 받게 됩니다.

2. 토라가 항상 사건의 연대순을 따르는 것은 아닙니다. 토라는 모든 세대 하나님의 자녀들의 교육과 바르게 함과 다스림을 위한 무대로 설정되어 있습니다. 토라라는 단어는 히브리어에서, 기독교 성경의 헬라어 및 다른 모든 언어로 번역된 것과 같이 법을 의미하지 않습니다. 토라라는 단어는 “교훈, 가르침, 훈련”이라는 뜻입니다. 이것이 바로 영감을 받은 하나님의 말씀이 우리에게 이스라엘 자손을 지파나 무리가 아닌 개개인을 세는 인구 조사에 대해 말해주는 이유입니다.

3. 출애굽기 30장은 정죄가 아닌 소망의 말씀으로 시작하는데요, 금송아지의 죄와 형벌을 예고함과 동시에 하나님께서 금송아지의 죄 후에도 이스라엘의 진영 가운데 거하실 것이라는 하나님의 약속으로 시작하는 것입니다.

저는 여기 30-31장에서 일어나고 있는 일을, 하나님께서 그분의 눈 앞에 두 손가락을 댔다가 이스라엘 자손을 향하여 돌리는 몸짓으로 이스라엘 자손에게 “내가 너희를 보고 있으니 조심해라!”고 말씀하시는 것으로 묘사하고 싶습니다.

이번 주 토라 포션에서 두 번째 극적인 사건은 주님과 모세 사이의 대화와 대답입니다. 아론과 이스라엘 자손이 금송아지를 세운 죄는 이스라엘의 주 하나님을 너무나도 진노하게 한 큰 죄였기에 하나님께서는 모세에게 이렇게 말씀하십니다:

“여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 너는 네가 애굽 땅에서 인도하여 낸 백성과 함께 여기를 떠나서 내가 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하여 네 자손에게 주기로 한 그 땅으로 올라가라 내가 사자를 너보다 앞서 보내어 가나안 사람과 아모리 사람과 헷 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람을 쫓아내고 너희를 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅에 이르게 하려니와 나는 너희와 함께 올라가지 아니하리니 너희는 목이 곧은 백성인즉 내가 길에서 너희를 진멸할까 염려함이니라 하시니” – 출애굽기 33:1-3

간단히 말하자면 – 하나님께서 모세에게 이렇게 말씀하시는 것입니다. “봐라, 이들은 네 백성이다. 그들은 내 백성이 되기를 원하지 않는다. 네가 그들을 돌보고 그들을 약속의 땅으로 데려가라. 나는 이 백성이 지겹다. 나는 지금 하고 싶은 다른 일들이 있는데, 그들은 나에게 진정으로 감사하지도 않으며, 애굽의 여신이 내가 아브라함과 그의 자손에게 영원한 기업으로 약속한 땅으로 그들을 인도해 주기를 원했다. 좋다. 내가 목이 곧은 이 백성에게 한 약속은 지킬 테지만 내 사자(천사)를 보내어 그들을 인도하게 할 것이다. 나는 해야 할 더 좋은 일이 있다!”

모세는 전능하신 하나님께 다음과 같이 대답합니다:

“모세가 여호와께 아뢰되 보시옵소서 주께서 내게 이 백성을 인도하여 올라가라 하시면서 나와 함께 보낼 자를 내게 지시하지 아니하시나이다 주께서 전에 말씀하시기를 나는 이름으로도 너를 알고 너도 내 앞에 은총을 입었다 하셨사온즉 내가 참으로 주의 목전에 은총을 입었사오면 원하건대 주의 길을 내게 보이사 내게 주를 알리시고 나로 주의 목전에 은총을 입게 하시며 이 족속을 주의 백성으로 여기소서.” – 출애굽기 33:12,13

이 논거에서 모세가 하나님께 말한 말의 핵심은 “이 족속을 주의 백성으로 여기소서.”입니다. 다시 말해서 모세는 하나님께 “안 됩니다! 이들은 내 백성이 아니라 하나님의 백성이니 하나님께서 친히 그들을 더 잘 돌보아 주십시오.”라고 말하는 것입니다.

이것은 이스라엘 자손의 시내 광야 40년 방랑생활과 하나님의 말씀대로 가나안 땅으로 들어가 정착하는 대극(大劇)의 도입부 첫 번째 장입니다.

모세와 하나님은 타협을 하고 모세는 하나님에게서 그를 위한 특별한 협상으로 이런 특이한 응답 중 하나를 받았습니다. 하나님께서는 모세에게 나의 참된 성품과 본성을 네게 보이겠다고 말씀하십니다: 내가 개인적이고 특별하게 내 본성을 너에게 보여줄 것이다.

여기 사람과 하나님 사이에 가장 매혹적인 대화 중 하나가 있습니다! 모세는 하나님과 논박하며 이렇게 말합니다:

모세: “내가 참으로 주의 목전에 은총을 입었사오면 원하건대 주의 길을 내게 보이사 내게 주를 알리시고 나로 주의 목전에 은총을 입게 하시며 이 족속을 주의 백성으로 여기소서.”

하나님: “내가 친히 가리라 내가 너를 쉬게 하리라.”

모세: “주께서 친히 가지 아니하시려거든 우리를 이 곳에서 올려 보내지 마옵소서 나와 주의 백성이 주의 목전에 은총 입은 줄을 무엇으로 알리이까 주께서 우리와 함께 행하심으로 나와 주의 백성을 천하 만민 중에 구별하심이 아니니이까?”

여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 “네가 말하는 이 일도 내가 하리니 너는 내 목전에 은총을 입었고 내가 이름으로도 너를 앎이니라”

모세가 이르되 “원하건대 주의 영광을 내게 보이소서”

여호와께서 이르시되 “내가 내 모든 선한 것을 네 앞으로 지나가게 하고 여호와의 이름을 네 앞에 선포하리라. 나는 은혜 베풀 자에게 은혜를 베풀고 긍휼히 여길 자에게 긍휼을 베푸느니라.”

또 이르시되 “네가 내 얼굴을 보지 못하리니 나를 보고 살 자가 없음이니라.”

여호와께서 또 이르시기를 “보라 내 곁에 한 장소가 있으니 너는 그 반석 위에 서라. 내 영광이 지나갈 때에 내가 너를 반석 틈에 두고 내가 지나도록 내 손으로 너를 덮었다가 손을 거두리니 네가 내 등을 볼 것이요 얼굴은 보지 못하리라.”

여호와께서 모세에게 이르시되 “너는 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 다듬어 만들라. 네가 깨뜨린 처음 판에 있던 말을 내가 그 판에 쓰리니 아침까지 준비하고 아침에 시내 산에 올라와 산 꼭대기에서 내게 보이되 아무도 너와 함께 오르지 말며 온 산에 아무도 나타나지 못하게 하고 양과 소도 산 앞에서 먹지 못하게 하라.”

모세가 돌판 둘을 처음 것과 같이 깎아 만들고 아침에 일찍이 일어나 그 두 돌판을 손에 들고 여호와의 명령대로 시내 산에 올라가니.

여호와께서 구름 가운데에 강림하사 그와 함께 거기 서서 여호와의 이름을 선포하실새 여호와께서 그의 앞으로 지나시며 선포하시되 “여호와라 여호와라 자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실이 많은 하나님이라.”

저는 주님께서 모세에게 하신 이 말씀과 계시가 전능하신 하나님의 본성을 들여다볼 수 있는 창을 제공하는 가장 중요하고 가장 계시적인 말씀이라고 생각합니다. 친애하는 형제자매님들, 하나님의 성품에는 악의나 비열함이 없다는 사실을 주목하십시오.

좋은 아버지가 그러하듯이, 때때로 그분은 자녀의 미래를 위해 교육적인 이유로 사랑하는 자녀에게 벌을 주십니다. 친애하는 형제자매님들, 금송아지의 죄 후에 모세에게 용기를 북돋우기 위해 하나님께서 특별히 모세에게 주신 이 계시를 사용하십시오.

저 개인적으로 이 토라 본문은 하나님을 믿는 저의 믿음에 확실한 닻입니다. 그렇습니다, 이 말씀은 제 인생에서 가장 중요한 교훈입니다. 이 토라 본문에서 우리가 배워야 할 것이 세 가지 있습니다:

첫째, 우리는 조급함과 불안함 때문에 죄를 짓습니다. 우리는 우리의 신적 본성을 실체화하고 스스로 작은 신이 되고자 합니다. 우리는 우리의 창조주로부터 도움이나 조언이나 지시 없이, 순전히 혼자서 삶의 방향, 삶의 만족, 창조적 능력을 정하고자 합니다. 우리는 우리가 전능하신 창조주에 의해 창조되었으며 이생에서 제한된 독립성을 가지고 있음을 잊어버립니다.

우리 삶의 대부분의 것은 창조주께서 우리에게 주신 것입니다: 누가 우리 아버지와 어머니가 될 것인지, 우리가 “Y” 염색체 또는 “X” 염색체를 갖게 될 것인지(즉, 우리가 남자 또는 여자로 태어날 것인지), 우리 키는 얼마나 될 것인지, 머리카락 색은 어떤 색이 될 것인지, 피부색은 어떤 색이 될 것인지, 어느 나라에서 빛을 보게 될 것인지. 이 모든 것은 우리에게 주어진 것이지 아무도 우리가 무엇을 원하는지 묻지 않았습니다.

둘째, 우리가 배워야 할 것은 창조주이신 하나님께서 우리에게 삶을 가르치는 책을 주셨다는 것입니다. 그냥 사는 것을 위해서가 아니라, 우리가 이 세상과 내세에서 최고의 삶과 가장 만족스러운 삶을 살 수 있도록 제조자의 가르침에 따라 사는 것을 위해서입니다.

셋째, 우리가 이 토라 본문에서 배워야 할 중요한 것은 우리가 금송아지를 만드는 것과 같은 중대한 죄를 지었을 때에도 하나님께서는 우리를 너무나 사랑하신다는 것입니다. 그 죄는 우리를 창조하시고 우리를 너무도 사랑하기에 그분의 독생자 예슈아를 우리 죄를 위한 희생 제물로, 현세와 영원의 구원으로 마련해 주신 주 하나님에 대한 거절이자 불신임 투표였는데도 말입니다.

이 교훈을 기억하고 온 우주, 즉 우리 은하계 전체, 태양과 달과 우리 은하계의 모든 별, 지구라고 불리는 이 아름다운 파란 공까지 지으신 창조주와의 관계를 새롭게 합시다.

하나님의 말씀에는 과부와 고아를 돌보라는 분명한 명령이 있습니다. 이 명령은 토라에서도, 선지서에도, 시가서에도, 신약성경에도 여러 번 나옵니다.

누구든 본인이 나이가 들어가든 연로한 가족이 있든, 성도들과 우리의 영적 가족 공동체에 이 명령을 지켜, 젊었을 때 그분들의 모든 것을 내어주었던 우리의 연로한 분들을 돌보는 일이 맡겨졌다는 것을 알아야 하며, 각 공동체의 연로한 분들을 돌보는 것은 성도들의 책임입니다.

교회적으로, 혹은 개인적으로 예루살렘의 연로한 성도들을 위해 조금 더 헌금하는 것을 고려해 보시기 바랍니다.

이스라엘 상황은 아직 나아지지 않았습니다! 이스라엘은 제한적 이동이 허용된 채 아직 폐쇄 중이며 대부분의 경제활동과 사업체들은 휴업 중인데요, 적어도 당분간 그럴 것입니다. 경제가 피폐해졌습니다.

여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것과, 세계가 회복되고 코로나바이러스라고 불리는 이 끔직한 팬데믹이 끝나도록 기도하는 것은 좋은 일입니다. 코로나는 왕관입니다. 저는 이 바이러스가 어느 왕의 머리의 왕관이 될지 모르겠습니다.

1. 전 세계를 위한 중보 기도를 계속해 주시고, 여러분 각자의 나라를 위한 기도에 집중해 주시되, 이스라엘도 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

2. 다른 형제자매님들을 위해 기도하며 성령을 통해 메시아의 몸을 위해 중보하는 사람들에게는 하나님으로부터의 복이 있습니다.

3. 우리가 전 세계 형제자매님들을 위해 몇 분 동안 기도하는 것은 작은 일 같이 보일지 모르지만, 하나님 나라와 하늘에서는, 메시야 예슈아의 몸이 진짜 한 몸임을 확증하고 그에 맞춘 관심과 진심 어린 중보와 기도에 선한 권위자들의 주의가 기울여집니다.

4. 이스라엘의 구원과 이스라엘의 평안을 위해 아주 신실하게 기도해오고 있는 이들을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 여러분이 이스라엘의 구원을 위해 기도하고 계시지 않는다면 지금 시작하시기 바랍니다. 이 기도는 분명 주님께서 응답하실 것입니다. 그분께서 “온 이스라엘이 구원받을 것이라!” 약속하셨기 때문입니다.

이런 폭동은 세 가지 이유로 일어났습니다. 예루살렘에서 폭동은 다름 아닌 아랍인들의 유대인에 대한 어처구니없는 증오와, 역시 아랍인들을 증오하는 일부 과격 열심파 유대인들 인해 일어났습니다. 이런 증오가 멈춰지지 않는다면 이스라엘의 하나님께서 아랍인들을 미워하는 유대인들과 유대인들을 미워하는 아랍인들을 모두 벌하실 것입니다.

예루살렘과 텔-아비브에 폭동이 있는 두 번째 이유는 높은 생활비와 식품 및 수도료, 전기료, 교통비, 주거비 폭등 때문입니다. 이 모든 가격 폭등은 코로나바이러스의 결과 및 영향 때문입니다.

세 번째 이유는 저희 정부가 자기들이 뭘 하고 있는지 혹은 뭘 해야 하는지를 모르는 것 같다는 그릇된 인상이 있기 때문입니다. 그러나 이런 현상은 이스라엘에서만 그런 것이 아니고, 세계의 여러 곳에서도 마찬가지입니다. 그렇습니다, 여러 나라 정부들도 정말 이 펜데믹에 대해 뭘 해야 하는지 혹은 어떻게 반응해야 하는지 모릅니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – February 17, 2022

I have been teaching from and writing every week on the Torah portion that is read in the synagogues around the world. The reading of the Torah and the prophets every week is a very very old tradition.

In the New Testament we see this tradition practiced both in the land of Israel and in the diaspora (The Jewish communities spread throughout the Mediterranean basin and beyond). Here are a few examples of the importance of this tradition:

“Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless?” – Matthew 12:5

“So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.” – Luke 4:16

“For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.” – Acts 13:27

“For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath.” – Acts 15:21

In our congregation like in most congregations of Jewish Disciples of Yeshua around the world, the Torah is read on the Sabbath and after the Torah we read from the prophets (It is called in Aramaic “The Haftarah”) and after the prophets we also read from the New Testament. All the passages that we read usually have a common thread that connects the Torah, the prophets, and the New Testament.

On this Shabbat of February 19th 2022, around the world, in all synagogues, the reading will come from Exodus, Exodus 30:11-34:35, the name of this portion of the Torah is called Ki Tisa:

“When you take the census of the children of Israel for their number, then every man shall give a ransom for himself to the Lord, when you number them, that there may be no plague among them when you number them.” – Exodus 30:12

Because this Shabbat is a special Shabbat there is an additional reading from Numbers 19:1-22, and it is called Parah (“cow”). The Haftarah (the reading from the prophets) will come from 1 Kings 18:1-39, and Ezekiel 36:16-38. From the New Testament we will be reading from 2 Corinthians 3:1-18.

You might say to yourselves, these Jewish disciples of the Messiah in Jerusalem surely read in public so much text every Sabbath. You are right, we do read much texts from the Word of God every Sabbath, Just like the apostles did and our forefathers did around the whole wide world.

Here are some more examples of the apostle Paul who traveled around the Mediterranean Sea spreading the good news of the Messiah:

“And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, ‘Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.’” – Acts 13:15

“For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end.” – 2 Corinthians 1:13

“But even to this day, when Moses is read…” – 2 Corinthinians 3:15

Now I must get into this Sabbath’s reading of the Torah in our community in Jerusalem.

There are two of the most dramatic events during the wilderness wandering of the children of Israel in the Sinai Desert for those 40 years of testing and training, the boot camp, of the children of Israel before they enter the promised land of Canaan and settle it as an eternal inheritance.

The reading starts with the command of the Lord to Moses to number the children of Israel, all of them, and also to build a tabernacle, a Tent of Meeting between the priests and the children of Israel with the Lord God. A unique temple designed for the children of Israel.

Immediately after these commands, and while Moses was 40 days and nights on the top of Mount Sinai receiving the Torah from the Almighty God. The children of Israel are impatient and they urge Aaron, the older brother of Moses to provide for them a god that will lead them.

This is the first of the most dramatic events in the Bible that appears in our reading on this Shabbat. The question comes up to the structure of our reading. Why did God command Moses to take a census, to count the children of Israel, and why did God command the building of the Tabernacle as a place of His dwelling in the middle of the camp of Israel?

Here is what I think – the Torah here is showing two things by bringing the command to count the people of Israel and the command to build the Tent of Meeting (The Tabernacle) before the events of the building of the golden calf by Aaron, and by the request of the children of Israel.

1. God counts every person and knows the deeds of their hearts, hands, and the path of our legs step by step. When there is a collective sin like the building of the golden calf (a statue of one of Egypt’s main goddesses, Hathor), each individual is important and is counted and is going to be either blessed or punished for the sin that each committed.

2. The Torah doesn’t always follow in the chronological order of the events. The Torah is set as a stage for the education and correction and administration of the children of God in all generations of God’s children. The word Torah doesn’t mean law in the Hebrew language like in the translations to Greek, and all the other languages, of the Christian Bible. The word Torah means “instruction, teaching, training”. This is the reason why the inspired word of God tells us about the census, the counting of the children of Israel by individuals and not by tribes or clubs of people.

3. Chapter 30 starts with a message of hope, not of condemnation, but with the anticipation of the sin of the golden calf, and the punishment and at the same time with the promise of God that He will dwell in the middle of the camp of Israel even after the sin of the golden calf.

I would describe what is happening here in chapter 30-31 as God gesturing to the children of Israel by putting His two fingers in front of His eyes, and turning them toward the children of Israel saying, “be careful I am watching you!”

The second dramatic event in our reading of this week’s Torah portion is the conversation and the response between the Lord and Moses. The sin of building the golden calf by Aaron and the children of Israel was such a big sin that angered the Lord God of Israel so much that He says to Moses:

“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Depart and go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, “To your descendants I will give it.” And I will send My Angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.’” – Exodus 33:1-3 [NKJV]

In simple English – God says to Moses, “Look, these are your people. They don’t want to be My people. You take care of them and bring them to the land of promise. I am tired of these people. I have other things that I would like to do now, they don’t really appreciate me and they wanted an Egyptian goddess to lead them into the land that I have promised Abraham and his seed as an everlasting inheritance. OK. I will keep My promise to this stiff-necked people, but I will send my messenger (angel) to lead them. I have better things to do!”

Moses responds to the Almighty God with these words:

“Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘See, You say to me, “Bring up this people.” But You have not let me know whom You will send with me. Yet You have said, “I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.” Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.’” – Exodus 33:12,13 [NKJV]

The bottom line of what Moses says to God in this argument is: “And Consider that this nation is Your people.” In other words, Moses says to God, “No Sir! These are not my people, they are Your people and You better take care of them Yourself.”

This is the beginning first act of this great drama in the 40 years of wandering in the Sinai Desert, the entrance to the land of Canaan and the settlement of the children of Israel according to the word of God.

Moses and God compromise and Moses received one of these unusual answers by God as an accommodation specially for Him. God says to Moses I will reveal to you My true character and nature. I will give you a personal and special show of My nature.

Here is one of the most fascinating conversations between a man and God! Moses argues with God and says:

Moses:

“Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.”

God:

“And He said, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’”

Moses:

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

So the Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing that you have spoken; for you have found grace in My sight, and I know you by name.”

And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.”

Then He said, “I make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.”

And the Lord said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

And the Lord said to Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write on these tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. So be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself to Me there on the top of the mountain. And no man shall come up with you, and let no man be seen throughout all the mountain; let neither flocks nor herds feed before that mountain.”

So he cut two tablets of stone like the first ones. Then Moses rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him; and he took in his hand the two tablets of stone.

Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth…”

I think that these words and revelation of the Lord to Moses are some of the most important and most revealing words that give us a window into the very nature of God Almighty. Notice, dear brothers and sisters, that there is no malice nor meanness in God’s nature.

Like a good father, sometimes He has, for the sake of the future of His children, to give punishment for educational reasons, to the children whom He loves. Please dear brothers and sisters, use this revelation that God gives especially to Moses in order to encourage Moses after the sin of the golden calf.

For me personally these texts from the Torah are a sure anchor for my faith in God. Yes, these words are the most important lesson for my life. There are three things that we must learn from these texts from the Torah:

First, we sin because of our impatience and insecurity. We want to substantiate our divine nature and be small gods ourselves. We want to set the course of our life, and our satisfaction in life, and our creative abilities, all alone without the help or the advice or without instruction from our Creator. We forget that we are created by the Almighty Creator and we have limited independence in this life.

Most of the things in our lives are given to us by the Creator: Who our father and mother is going to be. If we will have the “Y” chromosome or the “X” chromosome (if we will be born as men or women). How tall we will be and what color hair we will have and what color skin we will have and in what country we will come to the light of day. All of these things are given to us and no one asks us what we want.

Second, that we must learn is that God, the Creator, gave us a book of instruction for life. Not for living only, but for living according to the manufacturer’s instructions so that we can have the best lives and the most satisfactory life in this world, and in the world to come.

Third, that is important for us to learn from these texts in the Torah is that God loves us so much, even when we sin such grave and serious sins like the making of the golden calf that was a rejection and a vote of no confidence against the Lord God who created us and loves us so much that He gave His only begotten Son Yeshua as a sacrifice for our sins and as the provision of salvation in this life and eternally.

Let us remember these lessons and give and renew our relationship with the Creator of the world, yes, even of our whole galaxy, the sun and the moon and all the stars in our galaxy even this beautiful blue ball called Earth.

The list of the sick is too long to include by individual names. Just pray for all of them and for Brazil itself. The Lord knows His children by name.

The situation of our older sisters who are true heroes in the service of the Lord – Leah, Ahuva, and Ilana need our prayers. I am asking you join us all in praying for our older sisters. They are true heroes of faith, and their love for the Lord, and for His people, is without limit.

There is a clear command in the word of God to take care of the widows and orphans. This command appears in the Torah, the prophets, the writings, and in the New Testament - even several times.

Anyone who is getting old or has older family members must know that the fellowship of the saints and of our spiritual family can be trusted to keep this commandment and to take care of our older generation of people who have given their all during their younger years, and it is the responsibility of the saints to take care of their elderly.

Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra for the elderly saints of Jerusalem.

I also received a request to pray for a young brother, Raymond Jimenez, who has the Coronavirus and needs God’s blessing for recovering and returning back to his normal life.

We received a prayer request from a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen, who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim.

Please keep brother Philip Marc in your prayers. Philip is a young man with very serious cancer. He is a truth seeker and a faithful disciple of Yeshua who loves God and who is a lover of Israel. Philip lives far from Israel in a country that we can’t travel to, but Philip's heart is with us, and with God’s people.

Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.

The situation in Israel is not getting better yet! Israel is still under closure with limited mobility and most of the economy and businesses are closed, at least for now. The economy is devastated.

It is a good work to pray for people whom you don’t know personally and to pray for the world to recover and bring an end to this horrible pandemic called the coronavirus. Corona is a crown, and I am not sure on the head of which king this virus is a crown.

1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.

2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the body of the Messiah.

3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the kingdom and in the Heavens, attention is paid by the authorities of goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.

4. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel. If you are not praying for the salvation of Israel, please start now. This prayer is sure to be answered by the Lord because He promised that, “all of Israel shall be saved!”

Please pray for Gary, our daughter-in-law Beth Shulam’s father. Pray for Danah our daughter, she needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time.

I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew, and Pastor Isaac from the city of Chennai.

Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil.

Please keep in your prayers our dear brother Pastor TJ in Taiwan. TJ’s mother has some very serious problems and TJ is now in California for his mother and father.

Keep Ruby Little in your prayers, our dear sister from Oklahoma City. Ruby went through a new set of tests for her cancer and the tests returned with not such a good news. Ruby is in need of our prayers. Pray for God to heal Ruby from her cancer that after two years of treatments not much improvement. Ruby needs a miracle and strength and courage to deal with this challenge in the best way that will give her a better quality of life than chemotherapy, for divine intervention, a miracle of healing.

Remember the following brothers and sisters from the Roeh Israel Congregation in Jerusalem; Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Zvi D. and Bathsheba, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their baby, and pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan. Sister Yoko had a stroke, and we pray that her recovery will be quick and full.

By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.

You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:

1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.

2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.

3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.

4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery.

Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country.

These riots are motivated by three different reason. In Jerusalem the riots are motivated by nothing less than sheer hate from Arabs against Jews, and from some radical zealot Jews that also hate Arabs. If this hate does not stop, the Lord God of Israel will punish both the Jews who hate and the Arabs who hate Jews.

The second reason that there are riots in Jerusalem and in Tel-Aviv is the high cost of living and the hikes of prices of food and water, and electricity and transportation and housing. All these hikes in prices are a result and aftermath of the Coronavirus.

The third reason is that there is a false impression that our government doesn’t know what it is doing or what it ought to be doing. However this phenomenon is not only in Israel it is true in many parts of the world. Yes, the governments don’t really know what to do or how to react to this pandemic.

Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double the number of people and families that we serve.

Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail.

Pray for some dear friends, Rabbi Salt, and his family and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

We are praying for Tali and asking you all to pray for Tali. We need to ask God to heal and bless this dear sister that is suffering both physically and materially. Tali has three teenage daughters with health problems and Tali herself has some serious health problems.

The Coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many.

I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.

Please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas. The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.

This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the Coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months. We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families.

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children.

Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
