이 예루살렘 기도 목록은 20세기 초 예루살렘 올드 시티에서 태어난 정통유대교 유대인 모세 임마누엘 벤-마이어가 시작한 것입니다. 제2차 세계대전 후 알렌비 장군의 영국군이 중동을 다스리고 있을 때 예루살렘, 욥바, 티베리아스, 하이파 등등에 개신교회들이, 특히 성공회 교회가 많았습니다.

형제에게 공정하지 않게 대하고 그의 힘든 상황을 이용해 이익을 취하는 것은 결코 현명하지 못합니다. 동기간에 관대하고 친절하게 대하는 것이 훨씬 현명한 것입니다. 화평을 추구하고 화평을 따라가십시오. 여러분의 친구나 동기가 여러분이 그들에게 공정하게 대하지 않는다고 느껴 분노가 끓어오르는 것 같을 때 여러분은 여러분 자신의 약함을 보이고 겸손한 것이 언제나 현명합니다. 여러분의 가족이나 친구의 분노와 적의를 대할 때, 언제나 최악에 대비하고, 최선을 바라십시오. 이용당했다고 느끼는 감정과 미움에 조롱이나 기름을 붓는 것은 결코 현명하지 못합니다. 넷째, 야곱은 두려워서, 혹시 에서의 분노가 누그러지지 않았을 경우를 대비하여, 그의 가족을 안전하게 지키고 주님께서 그에게 하신 약속을 이루기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 방비를 합니다. 야곱은 에서가 여전히 그의 마음에 야곱을 죽이려는 마음을 먹고 있는 경우를 대비하여, 그의 진영을 두 떼로 나누어 거리를 두고 행진하게 했습니다! 야곱이 최악의 경우에 대비하여 할 수 있는 모든 방비를 하여 그의 가족을 두 떼로 나누어, 에서가 아직 미움과 살의를 가지고 있는 경우에 한 떼가 잡히면, 다른 떼는 달아나 살아남게 한 것은 현명한 것이었습니다. 여러분이 여러분을 미워하여 해하고자 하는 사람과 화친하려고 할 때라도, 가족의 안전을 확실히 할 보호와 방어책을 세우는 것은 현명하고 아주 필요합니다. 다섯째, 서로 미워하는 두 형제의 관계도 오랜 세월 헤어져 있는 것으로 누그러질 수 있는 것 같습니다. 에서도 부와 가족이 불었고, 그 땅에서 주요한 수령이자 존경받는 지위의 사람이 되었습니다. 이것이 에서로 하여금 야곱과 그의 가족을 용서하고 화해하는 것을 다시 생각하고 여지를 찾아보게 했습니다. 마지막으로, 오늘날 우리는 친구 간이나 동기 간에 싸움이 있고, 심지어 그 싸움이 완전히 타당할 때라도, 이렇게 싸우는 친구들과 동기들 간에 참된 힘과 안전이 이루어져야 한다는 것, 과거 공정하지 않은 대우와 분노는 교만이나 군사력을 내려놓고, 겸손으로, 화해와 화평의 정신으로 바로잡아야 한다는 것을 배울 수 있습니다. 그러면 양측은 평화로운 안착과 화평한 관계 회복에 훨씬 더 가까워질 수 있습니다. 슬프고 매우 심각한 다른 이야기는, 우리가 아는 것이 거의 없는, 야곱의 외동딸 디나가 강간당한 사건입니다. 우리가 이 디나가 있었다는 것에 대해 알게 된 이유는 세겜 두령, 하몰(“나귀”)의 아들이 디나에게 반해 그녀를 강간하고 수치스럽게 만들었기 때문입니다. 야곱의 아들 중 시므온과 레위가 야곱의 재가 없이 세겜 사람들을 속여 디나와 결혼하려면 할례를 받으라고 했습니다. 그리고 그들이 할례를 받고 몸조리 하는 동안 야곱의 아들들이 그 세겜 사람들을 공격하여 야곱과 가나안 거주민과의 합의와 계약을 깼습니다. 야곱은 이 두 아들이 이 가나안 거주민들을 속여 할례를 받게 하고는 할례로 인한 통증으로 앓고 있는 세겜 남자들을 죽이는 일을 도모하여 불명예스럽게 행동한 것을 결코 용서하지 않았습니다. 야곱은 두 아들 시므온과 레위의 행위를 결코 잊지 않았고, 임종 시 아들들에게 축복할 때도 그들에게 축복하지 않았습니다. 그는 사실 이 두 아들을 저주했습니다: “시므온과 레위는 형제요 그들의 칼은 폭력의 도구로다 내 혼아 그들의 모의에 상관하지 말지어다 내 영광아 그들의 집회에 참여하지 말지어다 그들이 그들의 분노대로 사람을 죽이고 그들의 혈기대로 소의 발목 힘줄을 끊었음이로다 그 노여움이 혹독하니 저주를 받을 것이요 분기가 맹렬하니 저주를 받을 것이라 내가 그들을 야곱 중에서 나누며 이스라엘 중에서 흩으리로다” — 창세기 49:5-7 아버지가 자녀에게 해주는 축복은 그들의 여생에 매우 소중한 것입니다. 그런데 이번 토라 포션에서 우리는 아버지의 저주도 강력하여 자녀의 삶에 범상치 않은 문제와 불행을 초래할 수 있다는 것도 알 수 있습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – December 8, 2022

The Jerusalem Prayer List is something that was started by Moshe Emanuel Ben-Maier, an Orthodox Jew born in the Old City of Jerusalem in the early years of the 20th Century. After World War II, when the British army of General Allenby ruled the Middle East, the Protestant churches, and especially the Anglican Church, flourished in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Tiberias, Haifa…
In Jerusalem the Anglicans revived the Christ’s Church that was built by Bishop Michael Solomon Alexander, the first Jewish leader of a Jerusalem church since AD 135 (who entered Jerusalem in January 1842). Moshe Emanuel Ben-Maier, a young Orthodox Jew who was born in the Jewish quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, walked in front of the church that Bishop Solomon Alexander built in the mid 1800’s. It was a Christian church, and Moshe just passed by the building and had no interest in the church, especially in the Anglican church. One day Moshe passed by the church and saw two boys fighting with each other. He broke up the fighting between the boys and found out that they were living in the Christ Church compound. They were boys of one of the Anglican pastors in the church. Moshe took them in and presented them to their father, telling the father what happened, and that he separated the boys that were fighting, and is bringing them to their home. Well, the Anglican missionary welcomed Moshe in and a friendship developed between Moshe the Orthodox Jew and the Anglican missionary. It was the first time that Moshe Ben-Maier heard that Jesus was a Jew and that all the apostles of Jesus were Jews, and that they called themselves Christians. Moshe Ben-Maier received a Bible with a New Testament. He took it home and the same day started to read it. Moshe’s good fortune was that the Anglican missionary was a kind and not pushy missionary, and the family was hospitable and welcoming. This was the beginning of Moshe Ben-Maier’s journey of faith and adventure with Yeshua until his death in 1978. Moshe Ben-Maier published the first Hebrew songbook that had around 400 Christian hymns that Moshe translated to Hebrew. In 1934 Moshe also published a weekly newspaper in Hebrew that was spread in the streets of Jerusalem and had news and articles of interest to the Hebrew-speaking population of Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel-Aviv. I am sharing with you the story about Moshe Emanuel Ben-Maier because he was the first one to write, print by hand, and publish the Jerusalem Prayer List. Moshe’s Jerusalem Prayer List was one page of news and a study of the weekly Torah portion. I took this weekly task in 1979, after Moshe’s death. This Shabbat we in our congregation in Jerusalem, the Ro’eh Israel congregation that is associated with Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry, are going to read the same Torah portion that every Jewish synagogue around the whole world is reading from the Torah (the Law of Moses), along with the portion of the prophets. And we, as disciples of Yeshua the Messiah, will also add a reading from the New Testament. This Shabbat, the reading is from the portion called Vayishlach (“sent messengers”), Genesis 32:3-36:43. This Torah portion is the meeting, after many years, between Esau and Jacob his brother. This is a dramatic occasion. It is a meeting between two brothers, who 21 years earlier hated each other. In fact, Esau wanted to kill Jacob his brother, and that is the reason why Jacob was directed by his mother Rebecca to run to Haran, way up north to her brother Laban, for the fear of Esau’s desire to kill his brother Jacob. I don’t think that Francis Ford Coppola, the great Hollywood director, could catch the drama and the dynamics of this meeting between the two brothers. Two brothers that struggled from the womb of their mother Rebecca. The reading from the prophets (the Haftarah) is going to be this Shabbat from Hosea 12:12-14:9. And from the New Testament we read from Ephesians 6:5-24. Here is the scene of the meeting between Jacob and Esau, after each one took precautions to make sure that there will be no fighting or killing in this dramatic encounter between the camps of the two estranged and hateful brothers. When crossing the Jabbok river, a tributary from the east side that pours into the Jordan river about halfway from Jericho to Beit She’an, an angel of the Lord meets Jacob in the middle of the river. They fight, and it seems like Jacob is strong and able to stand his ground. This is a meeting of major importance for Jacob, because this angel is the one who renames Jacob “Israel” because he wrestled with “God’s messenger” and stood his ground. A meeting in the middle of the river Jabbok, just before crossing the Jordan River into the land promised to his fathers, Abraham and Isaac… “Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, ‘Who are these with you?’ So he said, ‘The children whom God has graciously given your servant.’ Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down. And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down. Then Esau said, ‘What do you mean by all this company which I met?’ And he said, ‘These are to find favor in the sight of my lord.’ But Esau said, ‘I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.’ And Jacob said, ‘No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.’” — Genesis 33:1-10 [NKJV] Here is what we all ought to see in this encounter between the two estranged, angry, and hateful brothers, Jacob and Esau. The dramatic part of this story is the meeting that I listed above. Here are the dynamics of this meeting… First, both approached the meeting with fear and insecurity. Each one had issues that seemed a legitimate cause to hate and desire to even kill his brother. The years passed and the two brothers matured and have families, and both realized that blood and family run much thicker than the floods of anger and hate, and the feeling that “my brother owes me… if he doesn’t pay I will kill him!” The brotherhood and family took precedence over the hate. Second, the years that passed were good because some of the hate was softened by the time and by the fact that both brothers, Jacob and Esau, had families and succeeded in gathering wealth and even small armies. And the deep hate was softened by the light of the years and the maturity between the two twin brothers. Third, what can we learn from this fascinating text sharing the reconciliation between Jacob and Esau? Being unfair to your brother and taking advantage of his difficult situation is never wise. It is much wiser to be gracious and kind to your brothers. Seek peace and chase after peace. It is always wise to present yourself vulnerable and be humble when your friends and brothers are feeling that you have been unfair to each other and anger is brewing between you. Always be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best, when dealing with anger and hostility with your family and friends. It is never wise to taunt and pour gasoline on the fire of hate and the feeling that you’ve been taken advantage of. Fourth, Jacob was afraid so he took every precaution to keep his family safe and to make sure that the promises of the Lord to him will be fulfilled, even if Esau’s anger is not appeased. Jacob divided his camp into two groups and marched them apart in two groups just in case Esau still had the murder of Jacob in his mind and heart! In such a case Jacob was wise to take every precaution, and separate his family into two groups, that if one of the groups is caught and Esau still has the hate and murderous intentions, the other group will run and survive the hate between the two groups. Taking security and defensive actions to insure the safety of his family is wise and very necessary, even when you have intention to make peace with those who might hate you and want to harm you. Fifth, the relationship between the two brothers who hated each other seems to have been softened by the years of separation, and Esau was also successful financially and with his family, and became a major chieftain and honorable person in the land. This forced Esau to reconsider and find room for forgiveness and reconciliation with his brother Jacob and his family. Finally, we today can learn that when friends and brothers fight, even when it is a fight that is totally reasonable, true strength and security has to come between warring friends and neighbors. Realizing that anger and past unfair treatment needs to be fixed with humility, dropping pride and reliance on militant strength, and coming with a spirit of reconciliation and peace. Then can take both sides come much closer to a peaceful landing and the restoration of peaceful relationship. The other sad and very serious story is the story of the rape of Dinah, the only daughter of Jacob that we know hardly anything about. The only reason why we know about this Dinah is because the son of the ruler of Shechem, Hamor (“donkey”), was in love with Dinah, and he raped and dishonored her. Simeon and Levi, the two sons of Jacob, took action without Jacob’s permission and tricked the men of Shechem to be circumcised, in order to take Dinah in marriage. And when they circumcised themselves, the children of Jacob attacked the men of Shechem and broke the contract and agreement between Jacob and the local inhabitants of the land of Canaan. Jacob never forgave his two sons for dishonoring and tricking the local inhabitants to be circumcised, and while suffering from the pain of circumcision, Simeon and Levi organized the murder of the men of Shechem. Jacob never forgot the act of Simeon and Levi his two sons, and when Jacob was on his death bed blessings his sons, Jacob didn’t bless them. He actually cursed these two boys: “Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. Let not my soul enter their council; Let not my honor be united to their assembly; For in their anger they slew a man, And in their self-will they hamstrung an ox. Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce; And their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob And scatter them in Israel.” — Genesis 49:5-7 [NKJV] A father’s blessing of his children is very valuable for the rest of their lives. But, we learn from this Torah portion that even a father’s curse is powerful and can bring unusual problems and calamities in the children’s lives.

Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 87 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please pray for Marcia my wife, and ask God to have mercy on Marcia and on me, and protect Marcia from Alzheimer’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis, and restore her energy. I also ask you to pray so that we can get the permits and licenses for a foreign worker to help us at home.
Please pray for Alexander West and his sister Sarah West. Alexander has a very serious case of Covid, and he has asked for prayer. This is a good thing, since Alexander has been estranged from the faith for a season. Pray also for Alexander’s wife Emily and son Ronan.
Please pray for Shannon’s father, Michael McGoff, who is scheduled to undergo heart surgery.
Pray for Adam R., Adam works in Netivyah as the media director and he, like Yehuda and Daniel, has been raised in Netivyah congregation in the Galilee. Adam has lost much of his hearing as a result of a virus. Pray for Adam and his family of 8 children.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They too have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam and for Hannah, her daughter. Miriam is a dear sister and has lost her husband recently. Pray for Daniel S. and his children. Our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, Gary, and his health, and for his wife Melanie and their family.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there and they are far from our congregation, we miss them, but we wish them a wonderful summer.
Please pray for Alexander West and his sister Sarah West. Alexander has a very serious case of Covid, and he has asked for prayer. This is a good thing, since Alexander has been estranged form the faith for a season. Pray also for Ronan, Alexander’s wife, who also has a challenging case of Covid.
Pray for the Ro’eh Israel congregation and the leadership of Netivyah. I have received my last check in the end of August. I am no longer employed by Netivyah. I am continuing the Lord’s work without stopping or slowing down for one minute. I need your prayers because from January I will be living on a pension. Until January, by God’s grace!

Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:

The house of Jacob shall be a fire, And the house of Joseph a flame; But the house of Esau shall be stubble; They shall kindle them and devour them, And no survivor shall remain of the house of Esau, For the Lord has spoken. The South shall possess the mountains of Esau, And the Lowland shall possess Philistia. They shall possess the fields of Ephraim And the fields of Samaria. Benjamin shall possess Gilead. And the captives of this host of the children of Israel Shall possess the land of the Canaanites As far as Zarephath. The captives of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad Shall possess the cities of the South. Then saviors shall come to Mount Zion To judge the mountains of Esau, And the kingdom shall be the Lord’s.” — Obadiah 1:17-21 [NKJV]

Pray for Danah my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom and peace and calm in life and in her work.
Pray for Noaam my granddaughter. She is working two jobs now and needs good health and wisdom to make the right choices and plans for life, education, immigration to Israel, and just general protection from all harm.
Pray for David Young the preacher in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, who is back to preaching after recovering from medical issues. Please keep David in your prayers.
Pray for Ruby Little, our dear and faithful sister who has cancer and has stopped receiving medical treatment for the cancer that she has. Please pray for Ruby that the Lord will heal and strengthen her and provide for all her needs both medically and socially.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past issues of life. Pray for Don, Aaron’s father and Nancy’s husband. Don and Nancy are now in the USA. Keep Nancy in your prayers.
Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel. Pray for these very important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.
Pray a blessing for a dear sister Angela Isby and her situation. Pray for Tiz H. and Lion H.
Also pray for Ilana Avramov who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana has fallen and in now in rehab learning how to walk again. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.
Joseph Mock, a young man in his 30s, a dear brother that was named after me, has leukemia in an advanced stage. He is in the hospital and needs our urgent prayers. Joseph Mock is the son of Steve Mock, who is also one of the faithful disciples of Yeshua who became a believer in the early years of Netivyah.
Steve Mock is also in need of our prayers. He had a massive stroke and now he cannot speak, and has other limitations. Please keep Steve Mock also in your prayers, and pray for his wife Josse for strength and blessings and good health.
Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.
I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
Please pray for Netivyah and for the good work that Netivyah is doing in Israel and around the world.
We need more workers because of the challenges and needs and opportunities to bless the King Yeshua and His Kingdom down here on Earth and bless the poor people of Jerusalem and produce more materials, books, and magazines.
We ask you to join us in prayer that the right young people, talented and anointed by the Spirit of God will come and work with us, and the provision to pay the Netivyah workers a fair and just payment.
