The Jerusalem Prayer List – July 29, 2023

This Shabbat in the diaspora the reading will be one of the more dramatic Torah portions in the whole Torah. Moses, the leader who carried the people of Israel 40 years in the wilderness and ushered the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, is pleading from God to allow him to cross the Jordan River in enter the Promised Land. The land that was given to the patriarchs of the nation of Israel, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
God’s refusal to allow Moses to cross the Jordan river and at least experience the final chapter of the exodus from Egypt and the homecoming of the nation of Israel into God’s promises and land, is a drama that even Hollywood or Bollywood, couldn’t do justice to. The reading on July 29th, 2023, two days after the 9th of the Hebrew month Av only increases my understanding of God’s love and severity for Moses and for Israel. The Torah portion that will be read around the world in every synagogue is named Vaetchanan = ואתחנן = “and I pleaded!” The reading is from Deuteronomy chapter 3:23 – 7:11, a rather long reading from the Torah. From the prophets the reading is from Isaiah 40:1-26, and the Hebrew name of this reading from the Prophets is נחמו = Nachamu. I can’t think of a more appropriate reading to compliment Moses pleading for God to allow him to cross the Jordan river than that chapter 40 of Isaiah. The operative word in this reading is Nachamu = comfort ye my people. I have seen Handel’s Messiah more than one time and when my faith in God is a little bit shaken, just like now because of the events that are bewildering the whole nation of Israel, with an obtuse government led by some radical zealots with criminal records and rending this nation apart. I hear in my mind the oratorio Messiah composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel. The opening words of Isaiah 40:1-3, “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness; prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” I am at the same time reminded of Moses pleading for mercy from God to allow him to cross the Jordan, and God said, “No!” There is much for us human beings bound in corruptible flesh to understand the reasons why God sometimes says “No!” to his faithful servants like Moses, but I must accept and be grateful even when God says “NO!” to me and to members of my family and to people whom I know from my limited point of view that they are faithful and loving God with all their hearts and minds and life. I must say “Lord you are always gracious and loving and when you say “No!” or “Not right now!” to my prayers you are doing it for my own good and for the good of Your people and Kingdom! This event with God saying “No!” to Moses helps me put my own desires and appetites in check and submit them on God’s altar with thanksgiving! Now, Deuteronomy 3:26 is a great revelation for me! It is a proof that Moses was a real “Jew//Israelite!” When God says to Moses: “Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter.” In plain English language what God said to Moses is, “Shut up, I will hear no more of this request!” So, Moses like any typical Israeli turns to the people and says: “But the LORD was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me.” It is truly difficult for me, and I think for many people to receive a negative answer from God for my prayers. But, when I remember Moses, and not only Moses, also King David, and also Elijah the prophet and also other major and central characters in God’s Holy History who didn’t get what they pleaded for from God, I feel comforted with the words of Israel that were spoken to the people of Jerusalem over 1000 years later during a horrible time of suffering. What makes me happy is to understand to whom is God speaking in Isaiah chapter 40? God through the prophet Isaiah is speaking to Israel and calling the nations to comfort Israel, the nation, during these difficult days. The days are days of a falling apart of the Kingdom of Judea. This is not the only time in the prophet Isaiah that God is calling the nations to intervene and intercede for Jerusalem and for the people of Israel. Here also toward the end of Isaiah the prophet calls: Isaiah 62:1-7, “For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace, And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, And her salvation as a lamp that burns. 2 The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, And all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, Which the mouth of the LORD will name. 3 You shall also be a crown of glory In the hand of the LORD, And a royal diadem In the hand of your God. 4 You shall no longer be termed Forsaken, Nor shall your land any more be termed Desolate; But you shall be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; For the LORD delights in you, And your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a virgin, So shall your sons marry you; And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, So shall your God rejoice over you. 6 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night." You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent, 7 "And give Him no rest till He establishes. And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Those Christians today who think that they are absolved from standing with Israel and protecting and blessing the restoration of the nation of Israel back to the land that God promised them nearly 20 times in the Bible, from the Torah of Moses to the Prophets and I suppose also from the New Testament. What do you think is the inheritance that the Church, both the Jews and the Gentiles in God’s family? It is Jerusalem and the land of Israel. The pilgrimage of the nations to Jerusalem was prophesied in Zechariah chapter 14, and in Isaiah chapter 66 and in the Psalms and in the end in the last chapter of the book of Revelation. Where do you think that the New Jerusalem, the city foursquare, with the twelve gates and the names of the Tribes of Israel on their gates accompanied with the names of the 12 Apostles will be? My dear Christian brothers and sisters and their teachers and Pastors need to get free from the bond with Rome and Constantinople and need to re-read their Bible from the beginning to the end with a fresh look and a deliverance from the Pagano Christian interpretations of the church fathers, who were almost without exception anti-Torah and anti-Jews and preferred to keep the people in darkness until Martin Luther translated the Bible to German so that these poor farmers and citizens of Germania could understand what they believe. God is calling the nations in Isaiah chapter 40 to comfort His people (my people say the Lord) and this prophetic mandate is still a valid command and a divine program that needs to be put in a priority before the coming of the Son of Man, The Messiah, the Son of God, The King of the Jews, returning home! There is one more thing from the Torah reading of this Shabbat that I think is important to mention! In this portion of the Torah we have another retelling of the giving of the 10 Commandments of God, that were first given from Mount Sinai some 39 years earlier. Moses was 40 days and nights on top of Sinai, with the Lord. He received these 10 commandments written on tablets of stone. He brought these tablets of Stone and stored them in a wooden box with two angelic beings sculptured on top of that wooden Ark. Now around 39 years later Moses is repeating these commandments to the people of Israel gathered on the shore of the river Jordan on its east bank. These 10 commandments that Moses is reciting from his memory are a little different from the version that he recited when he came down from Mt. Sinai with the tablets in his hands. What are the differences between what Moses is reciting now and what was heard by all of Israel when God spoke these commandments from the top of the Mountain? The differences are not dramatic, and they start with the 3rd commandments – the commandment for the keeping of the Sabbath. Here they are arranged in parallel columns. 
Now why am I bringing these differences in the recitation of the 10 commandments by Moses on the plains of Moab on the shores of the Jordan river some 38 years after the giving of the Torah in Mount Sinai. Here is the reason, some Jewish Rabbis with great demagogy and dishonest intentions are confusing Christians who don’t know better to reject Yeshua as the Messiah saying that there are so many contradictions and incongruities in the New Testament gospels that they can’t be trusted. Well, actually the so-called Old Testament has much greater and even more serious so called Synoptic problems than the New Testament does. Here you have the holiest revelation that was recited and carved with God’s hand on two tablets of stone, and Moses was there and he like all of Israel heard God speak these ten commandments with an auditable voice booming from the top of the Mountain. The synoptic problems of the Old Testament start here in this one of the most important texts of the Torah. I confess that these problems are not major in difference one from the other. But they are different! What was carved on stone and spoken by God to be heard by young and old alike was transmitted by Moses with minor but not insignificant differences. There is a big difference between “REMEMBERING the Sabbath day” and “OBSERVING the Sabbath Day.” You can remember it, and then go to work in your field or garage. However, the really big such synoptic problems come between the historical books of the Old Testament, 1st and 2nd Samuel and King and 1st and 2nd Chronicles. There are some major problems in the narrative and in the perspective of the presentation of historical facts, including some glaring contradictions. In fact, in one of the of the cases it says that God did something and in the Chronicles version “Satan” did it. Jewish apologists that come to argue against Jewish disciples of Yeshua ought to be very careful, because on the bases of such texts one could draw a parallel formula that says that God (Jehovah) is = to Satan! I personally being only 77 years old know how easy it is to forget somethings and misquote sometimes because of Memory issues, and other times just get a bit confused. I was having some memory issues with names of people, and I had a dear friend who was the head of the Geriatric Department of UCLA test me to see if I am having the beginning of old age dementia. After a long test Dr. Jim’s diagnosis is that I don’t have any old age dementia, I just have too much loaded on this top computer that it takes it a short time to bring it from the hard drive in the clouds to the front screen. But we must not forget that Moses was 120 years old, not 77 years old and we ought to give him a little more wiggling room! He got it mostly right and covered the ground of every detail. So, what he got a little more liberal after near 60 years passed walking in the Sinai desert. God understood Moses, and too ought to give more gracious wiggling room to our elderly. Including to Marcia and Joseph Shulam! Please pray for the state of Israel and for the government of Israel. We are in two days before the double anniversary of the destruction of God’s temple in Jerusalem twice in history on the same Hebrew calendar date, the 9th Day of the Month of Av. God did allow the Babylonians the first time and the Romans the second time to destroy the temple on the very same calendar date just so that we, and the whole world will know that He did it, and nobody else could claim it. God warned us in the days of Moses that if we don’t walk in His ways the Land would vomit us and it did twice on the same date. God also promised us that He will remember His promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to the prophets of Israel and restore Israel back to their land and back to Jerusalem, and He did it again! Now, Israel is going through some of the most difficult period since the establishment of the state of Israel. The feeling in the streets of Jerusalem is that our country and the very fiber that is holding these people together is falling apart. There is total civil disobedience in the highest ranks of our wonderful and most moral army in the world, our retired military pilots refuse to continue to fly on combat missions because they have lost their trust in the present government. Our doctors are on Strick and only operate on emergency state of affairs. Pray for faithful brothers and sisters in Israel.
Last week the board of directors of Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry met in Jerusalem. There was a financial report given to the board by our dear Daniel Stern. A major concern was expressed for the financial status of Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry. The reason was not because funds brothers and sisters from around the world are not generously giving financial gifts of love and support this very unusual ministry, I would say one of a kind in Israel, and rare in other countries that have congregations of Jewish Disciples of Yeshua (The so called Messianic Jewish congregations).
The reason why we are getting close to the limit of the budget for the year 2023 is because we have too many challenges to do good and bless the population of the Jewish disciples of Yeshua in Israel. In the last few years we have increased the number of scholarships that we give to Jewish disciples of Yeshua who are regular / registered / and successful students in the Academic institutions in Israel. We participate in supporting a very special orphanage in the hills of Jerusalem.
Taking care of orphans is a major command both in the Biblical Prophets and in the New Testament. We have the Hamotzi - food distribution ministry that is unique in both scope and quantity of food and the frequency of distribution, i.e. about 1000 souls each week. However, the reason that I am writing this note, is that a concern was expressed for something that in Netivyah and in the Roeh Israel Congregation we were the flag carriers and that is the care and nurturing of our youth. We had for years the Munchkins youth group that did so much for our your and with investment of time and money for trips in the land and for equipment and for playing and praying. Our leaders now, Yuda Bachana and Daniel Stern are a product of the Munchkins.
Now it seems like there is concern for not being able to keep up Netivyah’s financial obligations if we hire a youth director to harness these young lives and walk them through to adulthood during the Army service and after. There were suggestions to cut down on the number of scholarships that we give. There was a suggestion to cut down some of the other projects like the twice per year significant and useful for the soldiers gifts for the believers who are serving in the Israeli Defense Forces.
I don’t believe that cutting the good that we are doing is the way of faith. I believe that we ought to increase and use every opportunity to good as we have done for 50 years.
Most of you know that we have never written such a letter or had such a direct request for financial help.
One of the suggestions was to publish fewer “Teaching from Zion” magazines. I believe that most of you have received for years “The Teaching from Zion” magazines, and it has been for more than 35 years published at least 3 time per year and most of the years it was 4 issues per year, written and printed and mailed, all for free. In the last two years during the coronavirus the Teaching from Zion magazine was written and published and mailed to more than 4000 brothers and sisters around the world. I would hate to ask people to subscribe and pay for the printing or the mailing and the printing of this important and unusual magazine.
What I am asking you our dear brothers and sisters if the following:
1. Pray for Netivyah’s financial needs and ask the Lord to impress and inspire brothers and sisters who love God and Love Yeshua our Savior and love the Jewish people and love their brothers in the house-hold-of-faith living in Israel and standing for the GOOD NEWS in This city of Jerusalem and in the land of Israel and serving the poor of Jerusalem and leading a congregation that has a wide international ministry of education and teaching and polemics and feeding the poor of Jerusalem. Just pray and ask the Lord to bless Netivyah and provide the funds that we need to have a youth leader and programs to share the goodness and faithfulness of the Lord, the King of the Jews, Yeshua, without feeling squished and pressed to cut down ministries. Pray that we increase and don’t decrease doing good in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel, and around the world.
As most of you this is a very unusual letter from me, Joseph Shulam. I am not concerned for the funds because I know our brothers and sisters around the world and I know that every need will be met and provided for. God is going to use good and faithful brothers and sisters to provide the men and the means to invest in the youth and insure that we have the personal and programs to not only keep them in the faith but also increase….

Please pray for Israel. In the last 48 hours Israel entered into the city of Gennin – a terrorist hothouse. More than 18 Jews were killed in the last two months by terrorists that came out of the city of Gennin.
As I am writing this prayer list – I am also watching television and seeing the operation that the Israeli Military is conducting in this nest of snakes called Gennin. Praise the Lord that from the several thousand Israeli soldiers no one has been killed or wounded in the last 48 hours.
We need to pray that this continues to be the case. We need to pray for the World to understand and see that Israel is dealing with people that at least their leadership, is not interested in peace. They are radical Islamists who are only driven by hate for Israel and for Jews and peace is the last thing on their minds.
Our government was holding back for months from opening this Pandora’s box and getting rid of the terrorists that are not only killing Jews and terrorizing the peaceful Israeli population, but also preventing their own people from working in Israel in good paying jobs provides honorable living for their families.
I hate that our boys, the men of our congregation, still serve in the Army and most of them in reserves have to fight and use weapons and do war in order to protect the civilian population of Israel from terrorism driven by hate and blindness.
Please pray for the Middle East and for the world to see and understand what the reality is here in this part of the world. The land that provided King David, and the prophets and Yeshua the Messiah – wants peace with our neighbors.
But they don’t want the hand that is stretched out in peace. They want to kill all the Jews and take their land, that is flourishing and being a blessing for all the world, and make it a dump like their own place in Gaza and in the Arab countries.
In Jerusalem pray for the following brothers and sisters who are in need of divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 88 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please keep praying for Marcia Shulam my wife. Pray that Marcia’s memory will stop weakening, and that her arthritis be healed and stop being active, and her strength to return to where she can take more care of herself.
Please pray for people in the prayer list: as you can see, we pray for people in every continent, because we have brothers and sisters around the world, and our interest is not only for ourselves, but for God’s people in the north and south, east and west, even in the far islands of the oceans. There is power in the prayers of those people who have a global interest for God’s Light to come from Zion and reach the darkest corners of God’s Earth.
Your prayers for Alexander and Sarah, and Andrew, who were raised as believers and have left their faith behind, have been answered, the Divine Shepherd guided these members of the same family gently back to the fold, please keep praying for their general and spiritual welfare!

Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:

Joseph Mock, a young man in his 30s, a dear brother that was named after me, has leukemia in an advanced stage. He is in the hospital and needs our urgent prayers. Joseph Mock is the son of Steve Mock, who is also one of the faithful disciples of Yeshua who became a believer in the early years of Netivyah.
Steve Mock is also in need of our prayers. He had a massive stroke and now he cannot speak, and has other limitations. Please keep Steve Mock also in your prayers, and pray for his wife Josse for strength and blessings and good health.
Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.
I am asking a special prayer for a dear brother and friend who is now doing a greatly important work in a very dangerous and precarious part of the world. Just mention DadyLion in your prayers, and ask for divine protection and angelic accompaniment for this man of God.

We ask you to join us in prayer that the right young people, talented and anointed by the Spirit of God will come and work with us, and the provision to pay the Netivyah workers a fair and just payment.
I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
