지난 주에 우리는 민수기 읽기를 끝냈고, 이번 안식일부터 모세오경의 마지막 책인 신명기 읽기를 시작합니다. 이것은 저희 유대력으로 마지막 달과 유대력 일곱 번째 달인 티슈리월 첫째 날에 가까이 가고 있다는 분명한 징조입니다. 티슈리월 이름은 이스라엘의 바벨론 유수 70년 후 귀환하면서 이스라엘에 수입된 것입니다. 우리는 여름 한가운데 있는데요, 예루살렘과 이스라엘 땅의 여름은 매우 덥습니다. 여러 면에서 더운 여름입니다! 이스라엘 나라는 정치 상황적으로 몸살을 앓고 있고, 저희 정부는 온통 더 많은 권력과 장악력을 가지려 경쟁하는 황소개구리와 뱀의 연립으로 구성된 정부이기 때문에 내란의 위기에 있습니다. 행정부는 사법부를 장악하여 다스리고 싶어하고 입법부는 그들의 틀니를 부엌에 두었는지, 아니면 욕실에 두었는지 모르고 있습니다! 이스라엘은 진짜로 하나님으로부터의 기적이 필요합니다. 이스라엘은 여러분의 기도가 필요합니다. 이스라엘은 여러분의 지지가 필요합니다. 이스라엘은 생존의 모든 영역에서 니즈가 너무 심각하고 너무 커서 오직 기적이 있어야만 저희를 내란에 빠지지 않도록 지켜줄 것입니다. 제가 역사 속에서 지난 시기와 비슷한 상황을 살펴본다면 그것은 바리새파와 사두개파와 열심당 사이에 미움과 분열이 너무 심해서 결국 전쟁을 초래했던 주후 66년일 것입니다. 유대인들의 여러 분파들, 즉 정치인들과 제사장들과 거짓 선지자들 사이의 미움은 지옥 불구덩이보다 더 뜨겁게 타올랐습니다. 저희가 지금은 그 정도는 아니지만, 이 상황이 계속된다면 오래지 않아 그 정도가 될지도 모릅니다. 우리는 2023년 7월 22일 이번 안식일에 히브리어로 “드바림”이라고 하는 토라 포션, 신명기 1:1~3:22를 읽습니다. 이번 안식일은 “하존(환상)”이라고 부르는 특별 안식일이기도 한데요, 이 이름은 이사야 1:1-27에서 따온 것입니다. 이 본문은 연구해야 할 아주 중요한 본문 중 하나로, 특히 우리 시대에 아주 중요합니다. 제게는, 이사야 선지자가 예루살렘 거리를 지나가며 말하고 기록한 이 하나님의 말씀을 읽을 때마다, 이 장은 진짜 계시입니다. 신약성경에서 읽는 말씀은 마태복음 24:1-22입니다. 신명기 1장부터 3장까지의 토라 포션 “드바림”은 이스라엘 백성이 요단강을 건너 약속의 땅 가나안 땅으로 들어가기 직전 요단강가에 진을 치고 있을 때 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 하는 긴 연설의 시작 부분입니다. 모세는 요단강 동쪽에 남아 산에 오른 후 육신으로는 결코 내려오지 않을 것입니다. 제가 “육신”이라고 말하는 이유는 모세는 사실 기독교 신학에서 “변화산”이라고 부르는 산 위에서 엘리야와 함께 예슈아와 만났을 때 이스라엘 땅에 들어갔기 때문입니다. 신명기가 아주 특별한 이유는 여기에는 모세오경의 다른 네 책들과는 완전히 다른 신학과 다른 스타일과 세계관이 있기 때문입니다. 이 책은 현대 성경학계에서는 아주 다릅니다. 이 책은 차별적인 스타일과 단어를 사용하며 따로 떨어져 있습니다. 신명기 저자의 영향력은 사무엘상·하, 열왕기상·하 같은 역사서에서까지, 심지어 편집자의 논평과 전형적인 선지서에서까지 추적해 볼 수 있습니다. 저는 신명기 1:1에서 시작되는 지리적 언급을 가지고 시작하고 싶습니다. 성경이 그렇게 정확한 지리적 언급을 하여 그 위치를 꼭집어 우리에게 GPS나 군사좌표 같이 정확한 주소를 줄 때 그런 정보가 필요한 유일한 경우는 사실 실제성, 이후 이야기가 실체가 있는 진짜 사실인 사건에 뿌리를 두고 있다는 증거를 제시하는 것입니다. 그 장소는 실제이며 찾아볼 수 있으며 실체가 있다는 것, 거기에서부터 여러분은 그 장소에서 발생한 사건도 실제이며 실체가 있으며 사실이라는 것입니다. 신명기 저자가 이스라엘 땅의 지리를 그 지역의 정확한 이름과, 호렙과 세일산과 가데스 바네아로부터의 여정의 소요시간과 설명을 알고 있다는 것은 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 그러한 본문 배후에 있는 개념은 여러분이 이것이 실제 있었던 사건일까 의심할 경우 여러분은 여러분의 발을 떼 그곳에 가서 그 장소가 실제로 있는지 그 좌표가 맞고 진짜여서 여러분을 그 장소로 인도해 준다는 것을 알아볼 수 있다는 것입니다. 신명기를 시작하는 지리적 언급 다음에 모세는 하나님께서 그들을 일으켜 호렙산(시내산)에서부터 아모리(가나안) 땅에 이르기까지의 여정을 시작하도록 납득시키셔야 한다는 암시를 제시합니다. 여기서 모세가 사용하는 어투는 명령 같은 것입니다. 제가 모세를 묘사하면서 이 장면을 현대의 미국 해병대 식으로 바꾼다면, 거칠게 들릴 것입니다. 모세는 본질적으로 이스라엘 백성의 지도자들에게 “일어나, 정리하고, 가나안 땅으로 행군을 시작하라. 여러분을 기다리고 있는 일이 있다. 여러분에게는 하나님께서 여러분의 조상에게 약속하신 유프라테스강(바벨론)에까지 이르는 모든 땅이 있다!”고 말하고 있는 것입니다. 토라에는 약속의 땅의 경계를 말하는 서로 다른 경계가 몇 개 있는데요, 여기에 있는 것은 좀 더 넓고 가장 큰 경계입니다. 이것은 사실 남서쪽으로는 이집트(애굽), 즉 아프리카에서부터 동쪽으로 요단강과 서쪽으로 지중해 사이의 땅과 북동쪽으로는 아시아의 유프라테스강까지 실질적으로 중동 전역을 포함하고 있습니다. 이스라엘이 정착한 땅의 실제 경계는 저희 역사 대부분 기간 동안 단부터 브엘세바까지였습니다. 신명기 1:9-13은 아주 흥미로운데요, 특히 7월 29일 다음 안식일에 읽을, 다음 말씀으로 시작되는 토라 포션에 비추어볼 때 흥미롭습니다. “그 때에 내가 여호와께 간구하기를 24 주 여호와여 주께서 주의 크심과 주의 권능을 주의 종에게 나타내시기를 시작하셨사오니 천지간에 어떤 신이 능히 주께서 행하신 일 곧 주의 큰 능력으로 행하신 일 같이 행할 수 있으리이까 25 구하옵나니 나를 건너가게 하사 요단 저쪽에 있는 아름다운 땅, 아름다운 산과 레바논을 보게 하옵소서 하되 26 여호와께서 너희 때문에 내게 진노하사 내 말을 듣지 아니하시고 내게 이르시기를 그만해도 족하니 이 일로 다시 내게 말하지 말라 27 너는 비스가 산 꼭대기에 올라가서 눈을 들어 동서남북을 바라고 네 눈으로 그 땅을 바라보라 너는 이 요단을 건너지 못할 것임이니라 28 너는 여호수아에게 명령하고 그를 담대하게 하며 그를 강하게 하라 그는 이 백성을 거느리고 건너가서 네가 볼 땅을 그들이 기업으로 얻게 하리라 하셨느니라” (신명기 3:23-28) 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 그들을 고무하여 짐을 싸고 계속 움직여 호렙산(시내산)에서부터 여정을 시작하여 아브라함, 이삭, 야곱의 유업으로 그들에게 주신 땅 가나안 땅을 정복하라는 연설에는 실제적이고 사실적인 모순이 있습니다. 모세는 자기 풋볼팀에게 일어나 싸워 이기라고 고무하는 풋볼 코치 같습니다. 그런 다음 몇 줄 아래로 가면 모세는 여호와께 그가 백성과 함께 요단강을 건너게 해달라고 간청하고 있습니다. 여기에는 아주 흥미롭고 애처로운 모세의 말이 있습니다. 출애굽의 거물 지도자이며 영웅이 갑자기 하나님께 간청하고 있고 하나님께서는 그에게 짧고 굵게 “안돼!”라고 말씀하십니다. 너는 이번에는 약속의 땅에 들어가지 않는다. 너는 산에 올라 거기서 죽는다 …. 이번 토라 포션에서 배울 수 있는 아주 중요한 교훈이 몇 개 있습니다. 영적 지도자들, 목사들, 교사들, 장로들, 전도자들, 주님과 가깝다고 느끼고 하나님의 성공한 종인 모든 사람에게 가장 중요한 교훈들입니다. “하나님의 사람들”인 우리 인간 입장에서 이해하기 어려운 교훈입니다. 교훈 1. 하나님께서는 영적 지도자들이나 사도들이나 선지자들이나 목사들이나 집사들에게 편애를 보이지 않으십니다. 오히려 하나님께서는 그분과 가깝고 두 배로 그분을 섬기는 사람들을 자기 분야에서 일하는 보통 사람들보다 더 심판하십니다. 모세가 얼마나 완전히 보통 사람인지 보는 것은 흥미롭습니다! 그가 하나님께 간청한 후 하나님께서 그가 가나안 땅에 들어가는 것을 거절하시며 크고 분명하게 “안돼! 너는 요단강을 건너지 못한다!”라고 말씀하셨을 때, 모세는 어떻게 했습니까? The Jerusalem Prayer List – July 21, 2023

Last week we finished reading the book of Numbers, and this Shabbat we will start the reading with the book of Deuteronomy, the last book of the Pentateuch (The five books of the Torah). This is a sure omen that our Jewish year is coming to an end, and the 1st day of the month of Tishreen, the seventh month of the Jewish calendar, imported to Israel with the return of the exiles after seventy years in Babylon. We are in the middle of the summer, and it is a very hot summer in Jerusalem and in the land of Israel. It is a hot summer in so many ways! The country of Israel is railing in pain for the political situation and the deep division that is on the edge of a civil war because the government, our government, is made of a coalition of a Crow Frog and a Snake, all trying race for more power and control. The executive branch of the government wants to control and rule over the judicial and the legislative branch doesn’t know where they left their dentures; in the kitchen, or the bathroom! Israel needs a true miracle from God. Israel needs your prayers. Israel needs your support. Israels’ needs in every area of existence, are so serious and so big that only a miracle will keep us from a civil war. If I would look at history for a past period that had a similar situation it would be the year 66 A.D. when the hate and division was so big that it brought the war between the Pharisees and the Sadducees and the Zealots. The hate between different factions of Jews, politicians, and priests, and false prophets was burning hotter than the deepest pits of hell. We are not there right now, but if this situation continues, we might get there before too long. We are going to read this Shabbat of July 22, 2023 the portion that in Hebrew is named Devarim, from Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22. It is also one of the special Sabbaths called Chazon, (Vision) that is from the first chapter of the Prophet Isaiah 1:1-27. This is one of these chapters that is so important to study, and is so essential, especially in our day and time. It is for me, a true revelation every time that I read these words of God spoken and written by the prophet Isaiah, through the streets of Jerusalem. From the New Testament our reading will be from Matthew 24:1-22. The portion of Devarim, Deuteronomy, chapter 1 to 3, is the beginning of a long speech that Moses gives to the people of Israel when they are encamped on the shore of the Jordan River, just before they cross the river to the Land of Canaan, the land of Promise! Moses will stay on the east side of the river and climb the mountain, never to come down again in the flesh. I say in the “flesh” because Moses actually did enter the land when he and Elijah had the meeting on top of the mountain with Yeshua in what is called in Christian theology, the “Transfiguration!” The book of Deuteronomy is every special because it has a totally different theology and a totally different style and world view from the other four books of the Torah. It is so different in modern Biblical scholarship. It has a distinctive style and vocabulary and stands alone. The influence of the Deuteronomist (The writer of Deuteronomy), can be traced through the historical books like Samuel I and II, and Kings I and II, and even through editorial comments and even in the books of the classical prophets. I would like to start with the geographical note that start in Deuteronomy 1:1. When the Bible give us such exact geographical notes, telling us, so to speak, the exact address, like a GPS or a military coordinate, to pin-point the location, the only need for such information is actually to present the reality and the proof that the subsequent story is deeply rooted in a true and real event physically. The place is real and discoverable and physical and from there you understand that the event in that place is also real and physical and true. There is no doubt that the writer of the book of Deuteronomy knew his geography of the land of Israel, with the right names of the area and the description of the length of the journey from Horeb and from Mount Seir and Kadesh Barnea. The idea behind such a text is that if you have doubt that this is a real event you can pick up your feet and go there and see that the place is real, and the coordinates are true and real to guide you to the location. After the geographical notes that start the book of Deuteronomy, Moses introduces his presentation with a hint that God had to actually convince them to pack up and start their journey from Mount Horeb (Sinai) to the land of the Amorites (Canaan). The language that Moses uses here is a kind of command. If I could picture Moses and translate this scene to a modern US Marine Sargent, it would sound harsh. Moses essentially tells the leaders of the people of Israel, “Get up, pack up, and start marching to the land of Canaan. There is work waiting for you; you have all the land that God promised your fathers, all the way to the river Euphrates (Babylon)!” There are a few different boarders of the promised land in the Torah and this one is the broader and biggest boarders. It actually includes the whole Middle East from Egypt in the Southwest, i.e., from Africa, through the land between the Jordan river in the east and the Mediterranean Sea in the West, to the north east all the way to the River Euphrates in Asia. The actual boarders of the Israelite settlement, most of our history, were from Dan to Beer Sheva. Chapter 1:9 -13 is very interesting, especially interesting in light of the reading next Shabbat on July 29th, that starts with the following words: “Then I pleaded with the LORD at that time, saying: 24 “O Lord GOD, You have begun to show your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds? 25 I pray, let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan, those pleasant mountains, and Lebanon.’ 26 “But the LORD was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me. So, the LORD said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Pisgah, and lift your eyes toward the west, the north, the south, and the east; behold it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan. 28 But command Joshua and encourage him and strengthen him; for he shall go over before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which you will see.’” (Deuteronomy 3:23) There is a real and true conflict in the presentation that Moses gives to the people of Israel; to encourage them to move on and pack their bags and get moving from Mount Horeb (Sinai) and take their journey to conquer the land of Canaan, the land given to them as an inheritance of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses is like a football coach encouraging his team to go up and fight to win. Then a few lines down Moses is pleading with the Lord, begging God to let him cross the Jordan River together with the people. Here is a very interesting and pitiful text of Moses. The big-time leader and hero of the Exodus is suddenly begging God and God tells him a big fat “NO Way boy!” You are not going to enter the land of promise this time. You will go up the mountain and die there…. There are a few very important lessons to be learned from this portion of the Torah. Lessons that are most important for spiritual leaders, pastors, teachers, elders, evangelist, and everyone who feels close to the Lord and is a successful servant of God. It is a lesson that is hard to understand from our human status as “men of God!” Lesson 1. God shows no partiality toward spiritual leaders, apostles, prophets, pastors, or deacons. On the contrary God judges those who are close to him and serve him doubly, more than the regular normal people who are working in their own field. It is interesting that to see how Moses is a totally normal man! When God refuses to allow him to enter the land, after he pleads with God, and God says to Moses a big loud and clear “No sir! You are not crossing the Jordan River!” What does Moses do? “But the LORD was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me. So, the LORD said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter. Go up to the top of Pisgah,” (Deuteronomy 3:26-27) Here are some very important lessons to be learned here, my dear brothers: Leaders don’t get a discount in God’s judgment and treatment of their needs. God is no respecter of persons, and normally leaders, pastors, preachers, deacons, elders and their families, receive harsher and more strict treatment with God. This is on the paradigm of “whom God loves; He also punishes harshly!” Leaders among God’s people are judged more because much is expected from them. “But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” (Luke 12:48) What is amazing to me from this Torah portion is how normal Moses is, and how God treats Moses. We must remember that Moses is the only one to whom God spoke face to face and mouth to mouth; from all the prophets and men of God in the Bible. “So the LORD spoke to Moses, face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he would return to the camp, but his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tabernacle.” (Exodus 33:11) In Israel, the most important vitamin is vitamin P – for Protection! You can get so much more done and receive benefits if you know the right person in the government or in some important office. THIS DOESN’T WORK WITH GOD! EVEN FOR MOSES GOD DIDN’T BEND THE RULES! This is such an important lesson for us to learn, and for preachers to learn in the way they treat their people. If a person is rich you don’t need to dance around him and treat him special and his wife even more special. There is no room for partiality in God’s Kingdom. We have the letter of James that makes this rule very clear. It’s important for you to read James chapters 1 and 2. This is especially important for the preachers and pastors in the churches, and in the Synagogues too. Just a few words for the reading of Isaiah chapter 1; I pray that you read this chapter and see the importance of the general context. This chapter essentially says that all the things that are so emphasized in synagogues and churches, the worship, and the giving, and the décor of the building and the ceremonies, are not worth a hill of beans if the intention and the heart and the faith and the charity to your fellow man is not there. Yeshua and Paul and all the prophets teach the same. We must all remember that God needs nothing from us. What He needs and wants from us is very simple and not expensive at all. It is our hearts, our life of faith and obedience to Him and to His commandments. Just think of this my dear brothers; what command of Yeshua, our Lord and Savior, is the church keeping in the way that our Lord commanded us to keep? The great commission to go to the whole world and preach the good news is waved around like a flag, but how much stock and effort and money are the churches given from their budgets to do mission work these days? How much money is given to orphanages or for the widows of the community? Moses is a normal human being. He blames the people for the fact that God doesn’t hear his prayers and doesn’t allow him to cross the Jordan river! Yes, Moses is a lot like me, and you and I am so glad to learn this fact! I would feel much worst if Moses, the man who spent 40 days and nights in God’s company, person to person, mouth to mouth and yet, when it came to explain why the Almighty doesn’t let him cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land, Moses says to the people, “But the LORD was angry with me on your account and would not listen to me. So, the LORD said to me: ‘Enough of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter!” O’ how I like this conversation between God and Moses. O’ how many times God told me, “No, you will not get this from me! Shut your mouth! Enough!” I feel much better now knowing and remembering that God also told Moses, the great Moses, “No!” My problem is that I don’t have anyone to blame except myself! I could have blamed Marcia my wife, but no one will believe me, and God would be even more angry with me and may increase the punishment! Please pray for Israel. In the last 48 hours Israel entered into the city of Gennin – a terrorist hothouse. More than 18 Jews were killed in the last two months by terrorists that came out of the city of Gennin.
As I am writing this prayer list – I am also watching television and seeing the operation that the Israeli Military is conducting in this nest of snakes called Gennin. Praise the Lord that from the several thousand Israeli soldiers no one has been killed or wounded in the last 48 hours.
We need to pray that this continues to be the case. We need to pray for the World to understand and see that Israel is dealing with people that at least their leadership, is not interested in peace. They are radical Islamists who are only driven by hate for Israel and for Jews and peace is the last thing on their minds.
Our government was holding back for months from opening this Pandora’s box and getting rid of the terrorists that are not only killing Jews and terrorizing the peaceful Israeli population, but also preventing their own people from working in Israel in good paying jobs provides honorable living for their families.
I hate that our boys, the men of our congregation, still serve in the Army and most of them in reserves have to fight and use weapons and do war in order to protect the civilian population of Israel from terrorism driven by hate and blindness.
Please pray for the Middle East and for the world to see and understand what the reality is here in this part of the world. The land that provided King David, and the prophets and Yeshua the Messiah – wants peace with our neighbors.
But they don’t want the hand that is stretched out in peace. They want to kill all the Jews and take their land, that is flourishing and being a blessing for all the world, and make it a dump like their own place in Gaza and in the Arab countries.
In Jerusalem pray for the following brothers and sisters who are in need of divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 88 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please keep praying for Marcia Shulam my wife. Pray that Marcia’s memory will stop weakening, and that her arthritis be healed and stop being active, and her strength to return to where she can take more care of herself.
Please pray for people in the prayer list: as you can see, we pray for people in every continent, because we have brothers and sisters around the world, and our interest is not only for ourselves, but for God’s people in the north and south, east and west, even in the far islands of the oceans. There is power in the prayers of those people who have a global interest for God’s Light to come from Zion and reach the darkest corners of God’s Earth.

Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:

Also pray for Ilana Avramov who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana has fallen and in now in rehab learning how to walk again. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.
Joseph Mock, a young man in his 30s, a dear brother that was named after me, has leukemia in an advanced stage. He is in the hospital and needs our urgent prayers. Joseph Mock is the son of Steve Mock, who is also one of the faithful disciples of Yeshua who became a believer in the early years of Netivyah.
Steve Mock is also in need of our prayers. He had a massive stroke and now he cannot speak, and has other limitations. Please keep Steve Mock also in your prayers, and pray for his wife Josse for strength and blessings and good health.
Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.

I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit here do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.
