가장 중요한 언약
“레크 레카”라는 이름은 “너는 가라”라는 뜻이지만, 또한 “여기를 떠나서 가라”는 뜻이 될 수도 있습니다. 읽는 본문은 창세기 12:1부터입니다. 이 본문은 구원의 역사가 시작되는 말씀입니다. 제 생각에 움직임/이동 없이는 그 어떤 형태의 구원도 있을 수 없습니다. 움직임/이동은 인류의 가장 기본적인 도전 중 하나입니다. 우리는 변화를 그다지 좋아하지 않습니다. 우리는 고요하고 평화롭고 안정적인 것, 안식할 수 있는 곳을 좋아합니다. 우리는 하나님의 이 명령 전에는 아브라함에 대해 별로 잘 모릅니다! 아브라함의 아버지는 우상을 만드는 공장을 가지고 있었다는 것, 우상을 만들고, 돌과 나무과 회반죽을 가지고 사람의 손으로 만든 우상을 섬겼다는 것을 말해주는 많은 이야기가 있습니다. 하나님께서 아브라함을 택하시고 그에게 다음과 같은 명령을 하신 이유를 말해주는 온갖 종류의 전설이 있습니다. “아브라함아, 이주해라. 여기를 떠나서 내가 네게 보여주는 곳으로 가라!” 제가 아브라함이었다면, 저는 분명히 “제게 타고 갈 수단을 이용할 표를 주세요, 하나님! 타고 가는 수단이 무료라면, 최소한 저에게 제가 갈 곳의 지도라도 주세요!”라고 말했을 것입니다. 우리가 구원의 이야기들을 살펴본다면, 아브라함의 이야기는 단일 스토리로 계속되는 드라마의 첫 번째일 것입니다. 대단한 러브 스토리이자 동시에 드라마인 즉 멜로드라마입니다. 한 개인과 그의 가족의 구원뿐만 아니라, 인류의 구원의 이야기입니다. 친애하는 친구와 형제님들, 그리고 어쩌면 나의 원수들일 수도 있는 여러분은 이사하기를 원하지 않는 사람들을 압니다. 그들은 그들의 흔들의자에 앉아 다른 사람들이 그들에게 럼주나 코카콜라나, 어쩌면 우스갯소리를 담고 있는 면이 있는 오래된 신문을 가져다주기를 기다리고 싶을지도 모르겠습니다. 이런 류의 사람들은 전능하신 하나님이나 누구에 의해서든 변화의 대리자가 되거나 누군가를 위해 선을 행하도록 사용되지 못합니다! 하나님께서 아브람(아브라함)에게 “네 고향, 네 아버지 집을 떠나 내가 네게 보일 땅으로 가라”고 명령하셨습니다. 그런데 역시 사람들은 미래에 대한 어떤 좋은 전망이나 소망이나 보상이 없이는 움직이거나 운명을 바꾸지 않습니다. 하나님께서는 아브라함에게 “내가 너를 큰 나라/민족이 되게 할 것이다!” 말씀하십니다. 이제 문제는 누가 큰 나라/민족 혹은 큰 사람(인물)이나 큰 음악가나 위대한 의사나 위대한 발명가가 되고 싶어하는가입니다. 보통은 바지에 가렵게 하는 것이 있는 사람이나 뭔가를 바꿔야 할 필요를 보는 사람, 혹은 현 상태로 인해 도전을 받고 있는 사람입니다. 분명히 아브라함은 최소한 하란이라는 도시에 있는 사람들의 정적인 상태로 인해 도전을 받았음에 틀림없습니다. 우리는 아브라함과 그의 가족이 원래 하란 출신이 아니라는 것을 압니다. 그들은 우르라는 도시, 오늘날의 이라크에 있는 지역으로, 큰 두 강이 페르시아만으로 흘러들면서 끝나는 곳에서 그리 멀지 않은 곳 출신입니다. 아브라함의 아버지 데라는 이미 행복하지 않았거나, 메소포타미아의 큰 강들 중 하나의 강가에 있는 도시로 하란보다 더 큰 우르에서 이주할 만한 다른 이유가 있었습니다. 우리는 창세기 11장 31절에 주의를 기울여야 할 것입니다. “데라가 그 아들 아브람과 하란의 아들인 그의 손자 롯과 그의 며느리 아브람의 아내 사래를 데리고 갈대아인의 우르를 떠나 가나안 땅으로 가고자 하더니 하란에 이르러 거기 거류하였으며” (창세기 11:31) 롯은 아브라함의 아버지 데라의 손자 같습니다. 이것이 왜 중요할까요? 메소포타미아와 그곳의 우상숭배에서 너를 데리고 나와 건조하고 황무한 이 땅으로 왔는데 네가 가장 좋은 땅을 갖고 내 목동들에게 차선의 땅을 주는 것이냐?” 말할 수도 있었을 것입니다. 그런데, 제가 아는 한, 아브라함은 롯에게 이런 말을 전혀 하지 않았습니다. 그는 롯에게 먼저 선택할 권리를 주었고 소돔 멸망 이후에도 하나님께서 그를 지켜주시도록 했습니다! 제가 소돔 멸망 이후 아브라함의 처지였다면, 제 마음 속으로 “내가 가축을 방목하기 가장 좋은 땅 소돔을 선택하지 않고 건조하고 황무하고 바위가 많은 이 땅에 남겨졌던 것이 얼마나 다행이냐! 반짝인다고 모두 금인 것은 아니지!” 말했을 것 같습니다. 이번 토라 포션에는 하나님과 사람 사이의 가장 중요한 언약에 드는 것이 있습니다! 제가 기독교 대학교 수업에서 “하나님께서 사람과 맺은 가장 중요한 언약이 무엇입니까? The Most Important Covenant
The name, "Lech Lecha," means "Go Forward”, but it could also mean “Go away from here!”. The reading is from Genesis 12:1. These are the words that start the History of Salvation. In my opinion there cannot be salvation of any form without movement. Movement is one of the most basic challenges of mankind. We don’t like change so much. We like calm, peaceful, stable; a place to rest. We don’t know much about Abraham before these words of command from God! There are so many stories. Stories that said Abraham’s father had a factory of idols, making them, worshiping the stone, wood, or plaster made with man’s hands. There are all kind of myths that say why God chose Abraham and gave him this command, “Move on Abraham, go away from here to the place that I will show you to go!” If I was Abraham, I assure you that I would say, “Give me a ticket to ride! God if the ride is free at least give me a map that shows where I am going.” I suppose that if we looked in the stories of Salvation, Abraham’s story would be the primary singular story, a continues drama. A major love story and drama at the same time; a melodrama. Not only the salvation of an individual and his family, but the salvation of humanity. You see my dear friends and brothers, may be also my enemies, those people who do not want to move on. They want to sit on their rocking chair waiting for their fellow man to bring them a rum and Coca Cola, and may be an old newspaper with a page of funny jokes. These kinds of people cannot be used by the Almighty God or anyone else to be agents of change or to do good for anyone! God said to Abram, nay God commanded Abraham, “Go from your land, from your birthplace and from your father's house to the land which I will show you.” But also, people don’t move and change destinies without some good perspective, hope, and reward, for the future. God says to Abraham, “I will make you a great nation!” Now, the question is who wants to be a great nation, or a great person, or may be a great musician or doctor or a great inventor? Usually someone who has an itch in his pants, or someone who sees the need to change something’s, or at least someone who is challenged by the present situation. Apparently, Abraham must have been at least challenged by the static condition of humanity in the city of Heran. We know that Abraham and his family were not originally from Haran. They were from the great city of UR, located in today’s Iraq; not too far from the place that the two great rivers ended adding their waters to the Golf of Persia. Abraham’s father Terah, was already unhappy or had some other good reason to move from UR a bigger city than Haran, that was on the shores of one of the great rivers of Mesopotamia. We ought to pay attention to verse 31in Genesis chapter 11, ““And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there.” (Genesis 11:31 NKJV) It looks like Lot was the grandson of Terah the father of Abraham. Why is this important? It is important to show that Sara, Abraham’s wife, was his cousin. Because it is written: “This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah.” (Genesis 11:27-29 NKJV) When such a complex genealogy exists, it could be because the family was not happy or in very broad social medium and people married their cousins. And this, in my opinion, explains why Abraham says twice that Sarah is his cousin, because apparently, she is his cousin. Lot is Sara’s nephew. Let us go back to the bigger story, “So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Genesis 12:4 NKJV) For me the great story is not that Abraham left everything in Haran and packed his bags to take his small family and his large number of disciples that he made in Haran and set his face resolutely to go to the place that God has shown him to go! The last phrase in this text is the most important. The phrase “So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him.” This is the phrase that is a winner in the narrative and relationship between Abraham and God. Often times we are challenged to obey and do what God commands us. But most times we add a little salt and pepper to improve on top of what the Father instructs us to do. We do what God commanded us but we also add at least a little of our own will so we can claim ownership on our lives. The truth is that even Abraham did the same and was obedient to God’s commands, but with a small twist of lemon in his coca cola drink. The most important part of Abraham’s story is Abraham’s unequivocal desire to obey God and add just a little bit of his own personal touch! The next thing that we learn from Abraham in our Torah reading on Shabbat is that he was a man of peace. A man who was willing to give the other side the privilege to be first, and always with an attitude of generosity. This happens in our Torah reading with Lot his nephew. When there is an issue of grazing rights, Abraham gives Lot the right to be first to choose his future. I don’t know anyone in the Bible that regretted marketing the humble choice and giving the other side the privilege to be first. There is hidden barbed wire in every choice we make. What looks right and good from the outside is always, at least in the whole Bible, the danger that what shines and is well packaged on the outside, will have something rotten in the inside. My father, Baruch Shulam, used to say, “The best fresh fish that you buy in the Mahane Yehuda Market in Jerusalem, is the one that is packed in today’s newspaper!” The idea is that if it comes in some fancy box, it might not be so fresh. Packaged in today’s newspaper means that it was purchased in newspaper from today! Abraham gave Lot the first choice and Lot chose the best, forgetting that Abraham and Sarah are older and forgetting that Abraham and Sarah brought him to the land of Canaan, and forgetting that he is so much younger than Abraham! Lot’s choice, no doubt, made him happy! Lot must have been so happy saying, “I got the best deal out of this fighting between my men and Abraham’s men! Well, sometimes the so called “BEST DEAL”, the deal that is make with selfish and self-centered motivation, doesn’t turn out to be the Best Deal!” The reading from the prophets is from Isaiah 40:27 – 41:16. The haftarah from Isaiah 40 invites, in my opinion, the reading from the New Testament from James 2:21. “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 23 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. 24 Likewise, was not Rehab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 25 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. 26 My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” (James 2:21-2:26) In the final results of anything and any time, what really matters is what we do and not what we say. As a teacher and a preacher (and I must confess that I don’t know the difference between these two words) I know that Words are important, but I also know that what a man does in those moments that are very lonely and only God and me are in the decision-making position, what I do is so much more important than what I say! It is also best that we never boast or be overly proud in spreading self and selfish advertisements about what we do! Abraham could have said to Lot, “you selfish little b…...” Don’t you realize how much I did for you, taking you out of Mesopotamia and all the paganism that is there and bringing you to this dry and barren land and you take the best land and leave my shepherds the second-best land! No, Abraham, as far as I know, said nothing like this to Lot. He gave Lot the privilege to choose first and allowed God to vindicate him after the fall of Sodom! If I was in Abraham’s place after the fall of Sodom, I would have said in my heart, “how fortunate that I didn’t’ chose Sodom, the best grazing land, but was left with this dry and barren rocky land! “Not everything that shines is gold!”” Our Torah reading has some of the most important covenants between God and man! If I ask in a christian university class, “what is the most important covenant that God made with men?” What do you think would be the most important covenant made between God our Father and the representative of humanity? Most Bible Students in a Christian University would say, “The New Covenant!” Well, the New Covenant, without a doubt, would be a very important covenant made between God and man. But in my opinion, it is the covenant that God made with Abraham. In my opinion it supersedes the covenant of Sinai, and it supersedes the New Covenant. Because without the promises and the covenant with Abraham, there would be no giving of the Torah in Sinai, and no Savior born in Bethlehem. Please think about this and meditate on the importance of Abraham and of the close relationship that God had with Abraham, and Abraham had with the Almighty One, the God of Israel! We need to pray that this continues to be the case. We need to pray for the World to understand and see that Israel is dealing with people that at least their leadership, is not interested in peace. They are radical Islamists who are only driven by hate for Israel and for Jews and peace is the last thing on their minds.
Our government was holding back for months from opening this Pandora’s box and getting rid of the terrorists that are not only killing Jews and terrorizing the peaceful Israeli population, but also preventing their own people from working in Israel in good paying jobs provides honorable living for their families.
I hate that our boys, the men of our congregation, still serve in the Army and most of them in reserves have to fight and use weapons and do war in order to protect the civilian population of Israel from terrorism driven by hate and blindness.
Please pray for the Middle East and for the world to see and understand what the reality is here in this part of the world. The land that provided King David, and the prophets and Yeshua the Messiah – wants peace with our neighbors.
But they don’t want the hand that is stretched out in peace. They want to kill all the Jews and take their land, that is flourishing and being a blessing for all the world, and make it a dump like their own place in Gaza and in the Arab countries.
In Jerusalem pray for the following brothers and sisters who are in need of divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
Ilana Ahijervie, a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.
Sarit, a sister born in Jerusalem, over 88 years old, lives alone. Has no close family, and suffers from several old-age illnesses.
Yehuda Hochman, is a dear older brother living in the Negev desert with some illness that needs healing.
Please keep praying for Marcia Shulam my wife. Pray that Marcia’s memory will stop weakening, and that her arthritis be healed and stop being active, and her strength to return to where she can take more care of herself.
Also ask prayer for me and my family and for all the sick and needing healing and grace from our Heavenly Father!

Pray for the congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil, to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges in front of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord, and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.
Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church, and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.
Pray for the state of Israel to open the doors for these lost Jews to be able to return and fulfill God’s promises to the prophet Ovadyah:

Dear Friends and brothers and sisters, Ruby Little is and was one of the biggest women in her lifetime! She was the mythogical secretary of Dr. J.P. Sanders as the dean of Pepperdine University and continued to be his secretary as the president of Columbia Christian College in Portland, Oragon. Moved to Jerusalem and was the secretary of Netivyah during the very difficult years of the formation of the pioneering ministry and movement that encompasses the whole world. Without Ruby I have serious doubts that Netivyah would have reached the wide spread international ministry that it is today. Ruby was a quiet person but had enough iron in her to contend with the South Pacific railroad. Her wisdom and her strength both served and motivated others around her to serve. God bless her and use her talents in heaven! I am sure that even in heaven Ruby will not just seat under a palm tree and count the birds that fly overhead! God bless Ruby Little’s soul eternally! Ruby you are a real big sister to so many people that you served and encouraged!

Joseph Mock, a young man in his 30s, a dear brother that was named after me, has leukemia in an advanced stage. He is in the hospital and needs our urgent prayers. Joseph Mock is the son of Steve Mock, who is also one of the faithful disciples of Yeshua who became a believer in the early years of Netivyah.
Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph that is named after Joseph Shulam – has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia his body! Praise the Lord!
Pray for three women of God in Canada who need healing, Lynda, Sandy and Joanne.
