예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 1월 7일

이스라엘은 세 번째로 전면 폐쇄에 들어갔습니다. 온 나라가 최소 14일 동안 폐쇄됩니다. 저희는 집 밖으로 나가 0.6 마일, 즉 1 킬로미터까지는 걷거나 뛸 수 있습니다. 이번 주에 읽을 토라 포션은 출애굽기 1:1~6:1, 선지서에서는 이사야 27:6~28:13, 29:22-23을 읽고, 신약성경에서는 사도행전 7:17-35을 읽을 것입니다.

그 주에 우리가 읽을 토라 포션이 뭐든 제게는 언제나 흥미롭고, 지금 일어나고 있는 일에 대해 함의가 있습니다. 제게는 성경을 읽는 것이 지금까지 여러 해 동안 읽은 적 없는 일간 신문을 읽는 것 같습니다. 저는 뉴스 프로그램으로 이스라엘 뉴스를 보고, 폭스 뉴스와 씨앤앤 뉴스도 매일 적어도 두 번 봅니다.

이스라엘에서는 코로나바이러스가 빠르게 번지고 있습니다. 이스라엘과 세계 여러 곳에서 이 바이러스 확산이 가속도가 붙은 이유는 “영국 변이 코로나바이러스-19”라고 불리는 것 때문입니다. 바이러스는 자연스레 변이를 일으키는데, 그것이 바이러스의 성질입니다. 저는 하나님의 도우심으로 이 바이러스가 자가 변이를 일으켜 사멸하도록 기도합니다.

성경에 나오는 여러 염병은 한 번의 회개 혹은 자비로운 하나님의 뜻으로, 예를 들어 모세에게 놋뱀을 장대에 달아 백성이 그 놋뱀을 보게 하라, 그러면 뱀에 불린 자들이 나을 것이라 말씀하심으로(민 21:9), 갑자기 끝났습니다. 저는 여러분 모두께, 진심으로, 주님께서 이 전염병을 그분의 지구상에서 거두실 것이라는 믿음을 가지고 기도하시기를 부탁드립니다.

출애굽기는 야곱과 그의 일족, 이스라엘 지파들이 애굽에 내려가 애굽 땅에서 가장 좋은 땅인 고센땅, 나일강 삼각주, 지중해 연안에서 살게 되었다는 것으로 시작합니다. 그들은 요셉이 7년 기근에서 애굽을 구해낸 훌륭한 일에 대한 예우 때문에, 바로의 축복도 받았습니다.

출애굽기의 시작은 좋아 보였으나, 불과 몇 구절도 안 되어, 200년 후 애굽에 요셉을 모르는 새 바로가 일어났다는 전개로 접어듭니다. 이것이 무슨 뜻일까요?

이것은 정권 변화를 의미합니다. 이것은 애굽에 정치체제 변화가 있다는, 즉 새 왕조, 요셉과 그가 애굽을 위해 한 일을 알아주지 않는 다른 정당의 바로가 들어섰다는 의미입니다. 이런 일은 역사에 자주 일어나는데요, 전쟁이나 혁명이나 속임수로 왕조 교체가 일어나는 피비린내 나는 역사가 있습니다.

이것이 우리를 결코 놀래키지 않아야 할 것입니다. 우리가 알다시피 미국은 혁명으로 탄생했습니다. 오늘날의 유럽도 혁명으로 탄생했습니다. 러시아 공산주의도 혁명 속에 탄생했고, 이 모든 경우에 구체제를 “일소”하고, 새로운 사람들이, 때때로 애굽에서처럼 새로운 인종의 사람들이, 권력을 잡은 새로운 정치체제 수립이 있었습니다.

이런 일이 일어날 때, 이전 권력의 리더십이 몰살되는 일은 흔하지 않은 일이 아닙니다. 즉, 여기에서 여러분은 그런 일을 보는 것입니다! 요셉과 그가 애굽 경제에 기여한 바를 알지 못하고 그것을 알아봐주지 않는 새 바로가 권좌에 오른 것입니다. 요셉을 모르는 바로라는 것은, 간단히 그가 요셉을 인지하거나 알아봐주지 않았고, 어쩌면 요셉과 그의 가족이 받아온 특별 대우, 즉 애굽의 최고 지역에 사는 것이 허락된 것을 존중하지 않았다는 뜻입니다.

출애굽기 1장부터 6장까지인 이번 토라 포션에서 진짜 영웅들은 사실은 여걸들, 여인들입니다! 대부분의 기독교권에서는 거의 그 가치를 높이 평가하지 않는 다섯 여인입니다.

진짜 영웅들 중 첫 번째 여인들은 산파들로, 한 명은 십브라이고, 다른 한 명은 부아입니다. 학자들 사이에서는 이 두 여인이 애굽 사람이었는지 이스라엘 사람이었는지에 대한 토론이 있습니다. 제 의견은 이 두 여인이 애굽 사람도 이스라엘 사람도 아니었다는 것입니다.

애굽에는 유럽과 아시아에서 애굽으로 이주한 셈족이 많았습니다. 다수족 중 하나가 힉소스 왕조였습니다. 힉소스 왕조는 아시아에서 온 셈족 혈통이며 15번째 왕조로 주전 1500-1600년 경 애굽을 통치했습니다. 그들은 힉소스계가 아닌 새 왕조에 의해 물러났습니다.

이 두 산파들의 이름으로 판단하건대, 이들은 아마 힉소스계인 것 같습니다. 십브라라는 이름은 스페인어의 린다처럼 “아름다운”이라는 뜻입니다. 이 이름은 사도행전 5장에 나오는 삽비라와 같은 이름입니다. 부아 역시 셈족 이름일 수 있습니다.

애굽의 바로가 히브리 여인들에게 이런 일을 하도록 맡겼을까요?! 그들이 그 일을 할 것이라고 믿을 수 있었을까요? 그들이 히브리 남아를 하나도 죽이지 않았음을 알았을 때, 바로는 이 두 여인이 내놓는 변명을 그냥 받아들일 만큼 무능력했을까요?

이것을 숙고해 보십시오: 이 두 여인들은 히브리 남아는 무조건 강에 빠뜨려 죽이라는 일을 맡았습니다. 그들은 이 일을 위해 바로가 택할 정도로 아주 프로였을 것입니다. 그들은 그 일을 받아들였습니다. 그런데 그들은 아프리카 빅토리아 호수부터 오늘날의 튀니지까지 다스린 애굽 통치자 대(大) 바로의 명령을 따르지 않았습니다. 그들은 바로의 명령을 따르지 않고 히브리 남아들을 구해주는 모험을 했습니다. 그들은 용감했고, 도덕적이었으며, 애굽 사람 바로가 아닌 하나님께 충성스러웠습니다.

아주 용감하고 특별했던 세 번째 여인은 레위 지파 여인과 결혼한 레위 지파 남자 아므람의 아내였습니다. 이 간단한 본문은 우리가 알아야 하는 많은 것을 드러내고 있습니다. 이 본문을 통해 성령님께서는 우리에게 이 가족이 하나님의 명령에 충성스러웠음을 드러내고 있습니다.

그들은 당대에 세계 최대 제국인 애굽에서 오랜 세월을 살았습니다. 모세의 가족은 레위 지파로, 이 지파는 이스라엘의 제사장이 되도록 예정된 지파입니다. 아기 모세는 석 달 동안 애굽의 비밀 경찰을 피해 숨겨졌습니다.

그의 부모님은 이 아기를 숨겨 그의 생명을 보존하는 큰 모험을 했지만, 상황이 온 가족에게 위험하게 되어 아기를 급히 내보내 하나님 손에 맡겨야 했습니다. 큰 용기와 온 세상의 창조주 이스라엘의 주 하나님을 믿는 믿음을 가진 아기의 어머니 요게벳은 방수 바구니에 아기를 담고 그 바구니를 나일강에 떠내려 보냅니다. 모세의 부모님은 하나님께서 이 아이가 바로의 경찰에게 죽임 당하도록 놔두지 않으실 것을 믿는 믿음이 있었습니다.

그 방수 바구니는 강을 따라 떠내려가고 있었습니다. 그들은 히브리 아기가 안에 있는 이 바구니를 어찌 할 수 없고, 아무도 어디서 무슨 일이 이 아이에게 일어날지 모릅니다. 바로 그 때 애굽 공주, 바로의 딸이 시녀들을 동반하고 목욕하러 그 강으로 내려오고 있었습니다. 그 본문 말씀은 이상합니다:

“바로의 딸이 목욕하러 나일 강으로 내려오고 시녀들은 나일 강 가를 거닐 때에 그가 갈대 사이의 상자를 보고 시녀를 보내어 가져다가 열고 그 아기를 보니 아기가 우는지라 그가 그를 불쌍히 여겨 이르되 이는 히브리 사람의 아기로다 그의 누이가 바로의 딸에게 이르되 내가 가서 당신을 위하여 히브리 여인 중에서 유모를 불러다가 이 아기에게 젖을 먹이게 하리이까 바로의 딸이 그에게 이르되 가라 하매 그 소녀가 가서 그 아기의 어머니를 불러오니 바로의 딸이 그에게 이르되 이 아기를 데려다가 나를 위하여 젖을 먹이라 내가 그 삯을 주리라 여인이 아기를 데려다가 젖을 먹이더니 그 아기가 자라매 바로의 딸에게로 데려가니 그가 그의 아들이 되니라 그가 그의 이름을 모세라 하여 이르되 이는 내가 그를 물에서 건져내었음이라 하였더라.” – 출애굽기 2:5-10

이 본문 속에 이상한 점들을 주목해 보십시오: 바로의 딸이 혼자서 나일강물 속으로 들어갑니다. 시녀들은 물 속으로 들어가지 않습니다. 나일강은 작은 강이 아닙니다. 이것은 세계에서 가장 큰 강 중 하나입니다. 여기에는 물고기도 있고, 큰 악어도 있고, 물뱀도 있고, 위험할 수도 있는 여러 종류의 야생생물이 있습니다.

바로의 딸이 그냥 강에서 목욕하러 가는 것이라면, 시녀들도 그녀와 함께 물로 들어가 그녀가 목욕하는 것을 돕는 것이 자연스러울 것입니다. 그녀가 강에 물놀이하러 간 것이라면, 그녀는 혼자 강으로 들어가지 않았을 것입니다.

이 본문 말씀에서 유대인 랍비들은 바로의 딸이 이미 이스라엘의 신앙으로 개종한 사람이었으며, 그 때 그녀는 달거리 중이었고 의례적으로 씻고 정결케 되기 위해 강으로 들어갔다고 추론합니다. 이것이 그녀 혼자 물 속으로 들어가고 시녀들은 물 밖에 있었던 이유입니다.

이런 랍비들의 해설을 뒷받침해주는 것 같은 두 번째 부분은 바로의 딸이 그 바구니를 열고 아기 모세를 보면서 즉각적으로 이 아이가 히브리 아이라는 것을 알아챘다는 것입니다. 당대 세계에서 가장 호사스러운 왕궁 중 하나에 살며 경호원과 시녀들로 둘러싸여 “호사”라는 단어를 설명하는 왕궁에 갇혀 보호받는, 최대 제국 왕의 딸이 어떻게 누비안계 아이나 힉소스계 아이나 당시 애굽에 살았던 다른 족속이나 민족의 아이와 구별하여 히브리 아이라는 것을 알 수 있었을까요? 바로의 딸은 자기 아버지 바로의 거대 프로젝트에서 일하고 있던 이 노예 민족과 어떤 관계, 어떤 지식이 있었어야 했을 것입니다.

유대인 랍비들은 아주 일찍이 이 이야기 안에 감춰진 언외의 의미를 주목하고 바로의 딸이 히브리 노예 민족과 아는 사이로 그들의 풍습과 그들을 식별하는 표식을 알고 있었다고 이해했습니다. 그녀는 즉시 이 아기가 히브리 아이라는 것을 알아챌 수 있었습니다.

그 다음은 바로의 딸이 이스라엘의 신앙에 대해 알았고 몇 세대 동안 노예로 일해 온 이 노예 민족에 대해 적어도 존경심이 생겼다고 말하는 랍비들의 설명이 옳을지도 모르겠다는 것을 드러내줍니다.

이 이야기에서 영웅인 마지막 여인은 이 바구니 안에 있는 아기의 누나인 미리암입니다. 그녀는 강가에 숨어 의심의 여지없이 이런 일이 일어날 것이라고 예상하고 있었습니다. 미리암은 여선지자로 여겨지는데요, 그녀는 분명 하나님께서 바구니 속의 이 아기를 돌보실 것이라는 예감이 있었을 것입니다.

미리암이 바로의 딸이 이 바구니를 가져가는 것을 보자마자, 강둑 풀숲 뒤에서 나타나 바로의 딸에게 말을 걸며, 이 아기의 유모가 되어 이 아기를 바로의 딸에게 데려다줄 때까지 그를 키워 줄 히브리 여인을 제안합니다. 히브리 노예이며 천한 계집아이가 왕궁 경내 물가에 간다는 것은 그렇게 간단한 문제가 아닙니다. 의심의 여지없이 미리암이 그곳에 들어가 대(大) 바로의 딸에게 말을 거는 것은 용기 이상이 필요했을 것입니다.

이 성경 이야기에서 가장 중요한 여인은 사실 바로의 딸입니다. 그녀가 그 히브리 아기를 구하여 애굽 이름 모세를 주는 일이 없었다면. (애굽의 역사 중 바로이름의 대부분이 끝에 “세스”를 가진 이름이라는 것을 주목하십시오: 람세스, 투트모세스, 그 외 많은 바로들이 그들의 이름 끝에 “세스”라는 접미사가 있었습니다.)

이것을 생각해 보십시오, 이 애굽인, 비-히브리인 여인이, 이스라엘을 노예생활에서 구해내 자유를 주고 하나님으로부터 토라를 받게 될 구원자를 구한 것입니다. 바로의 딸이 모세를 구하지 않았다면, 이스라엘도 없었을 것이고, 다윗왕도 없었을 것이고, 궁극적으로 예슈아도 없었을 것입니다.

이 세상 절대 권력자의 악한 법이 아닌, 하나님과 그분의 의를 따르기로 택한 용기 있는 여인들로 인해 하나님을 찬양합니다.

저는 이 기도 목록을 쓰면서 텔레비전으로 워싱턴 D.C.에서 일어난 혁명 시도와 미국 상하원 합동회의 무력 장악을 보고 있습니다. 오늘은 정말 아주 슬픈 날로, 미국과 전 세계에 심각한 결과가 있을 그런 날입니다. 세계에서 가장 중요한 민주주의 국가의 민주주의 몰락은 평화와 자유를 추구하며 하나님의 말씀에 순종하고 싶은 전 세계 모든 사람들에게 영향을 줄 위험한 사건입니다.

미국을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다!

미국 국민, 정의와 평화와 하나님의 의를 구하는 모든 이들을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

악한 자가 세계에 악을 퍼뜨리고 위대한 미국이라는 나라를 파괴하기 위해 계획한 것이 미국 국민의 유익과 축복으로 바뀌도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

저는 이 기도 목록이 점점 길어지고 있는 것을 깨닫습니다. 또한 우리에게 문자 그대로 전 세계에, 자기 나라와 공동체만을 위해서가 아니라 온 세계에 흩어져 있는 하나님의 사람들과, 특별한 필요와, 질병과, 재정적 문제와, 부모 자녀 문제로 하나님의 도우심이 필요한 형제자매님들을 위해 기도하는 데 헌신된 형제자매님들의 군대가 있는 것이 얼마나 큰 은총인지도 깨닫습니다.

마르시아와 저는 지금 집에 있습니다! 저희는 지난 금요일에 집으로 돌아왔습니다. 저희는 수많은 젊은이들과 함께 호텔에 격리되지 않아도 되었습니다. 저희 나이와 질병 때문에, 저희는 2주 동안 자가격리가 허락되었습니다. 이것은 아주 큰 축복이었습니다. 요즈음 마르시아의 건강이 별로 좋지 않습니다. 마르시아는 시차 적응에 어려움을 겪으며 아주 심히 피곤해 하고 있고 거동하는 것을 힘들어합니다. 저는 여러분께 마르시아를 위해 기도해 주시고 여러분의 기도에 계속 기억해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 우리는 우리의 치료자이신 주님을 믿으며 우리 모두를 위한 그분의 돌보심과 사랑을 옹호하며 의뢰합니다!

쯔비 형제님의 아내 밧셰바 데바렘디커 자매님은 퇴원하여 집에서 지난 주에 받은 유방절제술에서 회복 중입니다. 그녀는 오늘 다시 입원하여 한 달 새 두 번째 유방암 수술을 받습니다. 저는 여러분 모두께 밧셰바와 쯔비를 위한 특별기도를 부탁드립니다. 저는 모든 면에서 완전하고 순조로운 회복이 있도록 기도합니다.

주님을 섬김에 진짜 영웅들인 저희 회중의 연로하신 레아, 아후바, 일라나 자매님들의 상황은 우리의 기도가 필요합니다. 저는 여러분도 저희 모두와 함께 저희 회중의 연로하신 자매님들을 위해 기도해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 이분들은 진짜 믿음의 영웅들이며, 주님과 그분의 백성을 향한 이분들의 사랑은 무한합니다.

하나님의 말씀에는 과부와 고아를 돌보라는 분명한 명령이 있습니다. 이 명령은 토라에서도, 선지서에도, 시가서에도, 신약성경에도 여러 번 반복되었습니다. 누구든, 본인이 나이가 들어가든 연로한 가족이 있든, 성도들과 우리의 영적 가족 공동체에, 이 명령을 지켜 우리의 연로한 분들을 돌보는 일이 맡겨졌다는 것을 알아야 합니다. 그분들은 그분들이 젊었을 때 그분들의 모든 것을 내어주었습니다. 이제 그들의 필요한 것을 공급하는 것은 성도들의 책임입니다.

저는 지난 주 예루살렘 기도 목록에 여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 사람들을 위해 기도하는 것과, 세계가 회복되고 코로나바이러스라고 불리는 이 끔직한 팬데믹이 끝나도록 기도하는 것은 좋은 일이라고 썼습니다. 코로나는 왕관입니다. 저는 이 바이러스가 어느 왕의 머리의 왕관이 될지 모르겠습니다.

1. 전 세계를 위한 중보 기도를 계속해 주시고, 여러분 각자의 나라를 위한 기도에 집중해 주시되, 이스라엘도 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

2. 다른 형제자매님들을 위해 기도하며 성령을 통해 메시아의 몸을 위해 중보하는 사람들에게는 하나님으로부터의 복이 있습니다.

3. 우리가 전 세계 형제자매님들을 위해 몇 분 동안 기도하는 것은 작은 일 같이 보일지 모르지만, 하나님 나라와 하늘에서는, 메시야 예슈아의 몸이 진짜 한 몸임을 확증하고 그에 맞춘 관심과 진심 어린 중보와 기도에 선한 권위자들의 주의가 기울여집니다.

a. 이전에, 그리고 현재 한국이스라엘성경연구소(키비) 사역에 참여했고 현재 참여하고 있는 모든 이들을 위해 기도해 주십시오.

우리 영적 지도자들이 우리를 회개로, 죄와 허물을 고백하는 데로 이끌고 지적하여, 주님께서 이 코로나바이러스를 이 땅에서 거두시고 우리가 주님을 기억하며 그분의 의와 진리의 길로 걸어가게 하도록 우리 모두 기도하며 격려합시다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – January 7, 2021

Israel is for the third time in total lockdown. The whole nation is closed for at least 14 days. We are permitted to go out of our home walking or running up to 1 kilometer which is 0.6 miles. This week the Torah reading is from Exodus 1:1-6:1, from the Prophets we will read from Isaiah 27:6-28:13, and 29:22-23. From the New Testament we will read Acts 7:17-35.

It is always interesting to me that whatever the portion of the week we are reading is, it has implications for what is happening now. For me reading the Bible is like reading the daily newspaper, which I haven't been reading now for many years. I do watch the news the local news, and Fox and CNN news at least two times per day.

In Israel, the coronavirus is spreading like wildfire. The reason for this accelerated spread of the virus in Israel and in other parts of the world is because of what is called “The British mutation of COVID-19.” Viruses naturally mutate, it is their nature. I am praying that this virus will mutate itself, with God’s help, out of existence.

Several plagues in the Bible ended abruptly with one act of repentance or by the will of a merciful God who for example, just asked Moses to put up a brass snake on a high pole and people looked at the brass snake and their snake’s bites were healed. (Numbers 21:9) I ask you all to pray sincerely, and with faith that the Lord will lift this plague from off the face of His Earth.

The book of Exodus opens with Jacob and his clan, the tribes of Israel, coming down to Egypt to dwell in the finest part of the land of Egypt, the land of Goshen, in the Nile River Delta, just next to the Mediterranean Sea. They even received Pharaoh’s blessing because of his appreciation for the fine job that Joseph did saving Egypt from seven years of severe drought.

The book of Exodus starts seemingly well, but just a few verses into it and about 200 years later, a new Pharaoh rises up in Egypt who doesn’t know Joseph. What does this mean?

It means a change in government. It means that the political system changes, and a new dynasty comes into power in Egypt, a Pharaoh of a different political party who didn’t appreciate Joseph and what he did for Egypt This happen in history often, and there is a bloody history of changes of dynasties by war, and by revolution, and by subterfuge.

This should not surprise us at all. The United States of America as we know it today was born out of a revolution. Today’s Europe was born out of a revolution. Russian Communism was born in a revolution, and in all these cases there was a “purge” of the old regime and the establishment of a new system of government that put new people and sometimes, as in Egypt, a new race of people in power.

When this happens, it is not unusual that the leadership of the previous power is exterminated. So, here you have it! A Pharaoh came into power that didn’t know and didn’t appreciate Joseph and his contribution to the economy of Egypt A Pharaoh that didn’t know Joseph means simply that he didn’t recognize or appreciate Joseph, and probably didn’t appreciate the preferential treatment that Joseph and his family had received – being allowed to settle in the best part of Egypt.

In this Torah reading from Exodus chapter 1 to chapter 6, the real heroes are really heroines, women! Five women that are little appreciated in most Christian circles.

The first women that were real heroes were the midwives, the one, Shiphrah and the other Puah. There is some discussion among scholars as to whether these two women were Egyptians or Israelites. It is my opinion that these two women are neither Egyptians nor Israelites.

Egypt was full of Semitic tribes and nations that had moved from both Europe and Asia to Egypt. One of the largest groups was the Hyksos. The Hyksos came from Asia, they were of Semitic origin and they ruled Egypt during the 15th dynasty, around 1500-1600 B.C.E. They were deposed by a new Dynasty that was not Hyksos.

Judging from the names of these two midwives, they are probably of Hyksos origin. The name Shiphrah means “beautiful” – like Linda in Spanish. This name is the same name as Saphira in Acts chapter 3. Puah can also be a Semitic name.

Would the Pharaoh of Egypt assign two Hebrew women to do this job?! Could he trust them to do it? When he finds out that they have not killed every male child of the Hebrews would Pharaoh be so incompetent as to accept the excuses that these two women gave him?

Take this into consideration: These two women took the job to drown every male child of the Hebrews in the River. They must have been very professional for Pharaoh to choose them for this job. They accepted the Job. But they didn’t obey the ruler of Egypt, the Great Pharaoh who ruled from Lake Victoria in Africa to Tunisia of today. They took a terribly dangerous chance to not obey the command of the Pharaoh and to save the Hebrew male babies. They were brave, they were moral, they were faithful to God and not to the Egyptian Pharaoh.

The third woman that was very brave and special was the wife of Amram a man from the tribe of Levi who married a woman from the tribe of Levi. This simple text reveals a great deal of what we should be aware of. Through this text, the Holy Spirit reveals to us that this family was faithful to God’s commands.

They had lived many years in Egypt, the greatest empire of the world in those days. The family of Moses was from the tribe of Levi, a tribe that was destined to become the priests of Israel. Baby Moses was hidden from the Egyptian secret police for three months.

His mother and father took a big chance hiding this baby and preserving his life, but the situation had become dangerous for the whole family and the baby had to be dispatched and put into the hands of God. Yocheved the Baby’s mother with great courage and trust in the Lord God of Israel, the creator of the world, put the baby in a water-proof basket and floated the basket down the Nile River. Moses mother and father had faith in God that He would not let this child be killed by Pharaoh’s police.

The waterproof basket is floating down the river. They have no control over this basket with the Hebrew baby inside and no one knows where and what is going to happen to this child. At the same time the Princes of Egypt, the daughter of Pharaoh himself, is going down to the river to bathe accompanied by her handmaids. The text is strange:

“Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, ‘This is one of the Hebrews’ children.’ Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?’ And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, ‘Go.’ So the maiden went and called the child’s mother. Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, ‘Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.’ So the woman took the child and nursed him. And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. So she called his name Moses, saying, ‘Because I drew him out of the water.’” – Exodus 2:5-10 [NKJV]

Notice the strange things in this text: Pharaoh’s daughter goes in the water of the Nile River alone. Her maids don’t go down into the water. The Nile River is not a small river it is one of the greatest rivers of the world. It has fish, and big alligators, water snakes, and a variety of wildlife that could be dangerous.

If Pharaoh’s daughter was going to just bathe in the river – it would be natural for her maids to enter the water with her and help her bathe. If she was going to the river to play and enjoy the river – she would not go into the river alone.

From this text the Jewish rabbis deduce that Pharaoh’s daughter was already a convert to the faith of Israel, and she was in that time of her month, and went to the river to wash ceremonially and to be purified. This is the reason she went into the water alone and her maids stayed out of the water.

The second part that seems to strengthen this rabbinical commentary is that when Pharaoh’s daughter opens the basket and looks at the baby Moses, she immediately identifies the child as a Hebrew child. How would this protected daughter of the greatest king in the world of that time, who lives in one of the most luxurious palaces in the world, with guards, and maids, locked up in a palace that is the very definition of the word “luxury,” know a Hebrew child from a Nubian, or a Hyksos child, or a child from one of the other tribes and nations that lived in Egypt during that period? Pharaoh’s daughter had to have had some relationship with, some knowledge of this nation of slaves that worked on her father Pharaoh’s grandiose projects.

The Jewish rabbis very early on noticed the hidden subtext in this story and understood that Pharaoh’s daughter must have been acquainted with the Hebrew slave nation and have known their customs and identifying marks. She was able to immediately identify this as being a Hebrew child.

The next point reveals that the rabbinical commentaries might be right in saying that Pharaoh’s daughter might have known about the faith of Israel and had at least gained respect for the slave nation who had worked as slaves for several generations.

If Pharaoh’s daughter would be faithful to the laws of Egypt and the edicts of her father the Pharaoh and be obedient to the laws of Egypt, she would have been afraid to claim this baby.

The last woman who is a hero in this story is Miriam, the older sister of this Baby in the basket. She is hiding by the river and without doubt expecting something like this to happen. Miriam is considered a prophetess and she must have had a premonition that God will take care of this baby in the basket.

As soon as Miriam sees Pharaoh’s daughter pick up the basket, Miriam appears from behind the vegetation on the river banks and comes to talk to Pharaoh’s daughter and suggests a Hebrew woman to take the baby as a wet-nurse and raise him until it is time to deliver the child to Pharaoh’s daughter. It is not so simple to believe that a simple girl, a Hebrew slave, has access to the royal shores of the Royal palace precinct. Without doubt it must have taken more than courage for Miriam to enter there and address the daughter of the great Pharaoh.

The most important woman in this Bible story is actually Pharaoh’s daughter. Without her saving that Hebrew Baby and giving it the Egyptian name Moses (notice that most of the Pharaoh’s of Egyptian History have names that end with “ses”: Ramses, Tuthmoses, and many other of the Pharaohs had the suffix “ses” in their names).

Consider this, this Egyptian, non-Hebrew woman saves the savior that is to bring Israel out of slavery and into freedom and to receive the Torah from God. If Pharaoh’s daughter had not saved Moses, there would be no Israel, no King David, and finally no Yeshua…

Praise God for courageous women who chose to follow God and His righteousness and not the evil laws of this world’s dictators.

As I am writing this prayer list – I am watching on television the attempted revolution and forceful takeover of the American Congress and the House of Representatives in Washington D.C. This is indeed a very sad day and a day that will have serious consequences for the United States of America and for the whole world. The collapse of democracy in the world’s most important democratic nation is a dangerous event that affects people all over the world who seek peace and freedom and want to be obedient to God’s Word.

Please pray for the United States of America!

Please pray for the people of the USA – all those who seek justice and peace and God’s righteousness.

Please pray that what the evil one has planned for spreading evil in the world, and for the destruction of the great nation of America, will be turned into good and blessings for the people of the USA.

I realize that this prayer list is getting longer and longer. I also realize what a big blessing it is for us to have this army of brothers and sisters from literally around the world that are dedicated to praying globally not only for their countries, and communities, but for the people of God spread around the whole world. Brothers and sisters who have special needs, illness, and financial problems, and problems with their parents and children, who need God’s help.

Marcia and I are home now! We returned home last Friday. We were spared having to quarantine in a hotel with hordes of young people. Because of our age and medical condition, we were allowed to do the two weeks of quarantine in our own home. This was a wonderful blessing. Marcia’s health is not doing too well these days. She has a hard time overcoming jetlag, and she is super tired and has difficulty functioning. I am asking you to pray for Marcia and to keep her in your prayers. We believe in the Lord our healer and we stand for and trust in His care and love for us all!

Bathsheba Derbaremdicker, Zvi’s wife, is out of the hospital and recovering at home from the total mastectomy that she had last week. She is back in the hospital today and is having the second surgery in one month for breast cancer. I am asking you all for special prayer for Bathsheba and for Zvi. I am praying for a full and easy recovery in every way.

The situation of our older sisters who are true heroes in the service of the Lord, Leah, Ahuva, and Ilana need our prayers. I am asking you join us all and pray for our older sisters. They are true heroes of faith and their love for the Lord and for His people, is without limit.

There is a clear command in the world of God to take care of the widows and orphans. This command is repeated in the Torah, the prophets, the writings, and in the New Testament, even several times. Anyone who is getting old or has older family members must know that the fellowship of the saints and of our spiritual family can be trusted to keep this commandment and to take care of our older generation of people who have given all of their younger years and now it is the responsibility of the saints to take care of their elderly.

Please consider as a church or as individuals to add something extra for the elderly saints of Jerusalem.

I am asking you to pray for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation. What makes this kindergarten different from all others in Jerusalem is that it has Jewish and Arab and Christian children together learning co-existence from an early age.

Zacharias Waldner from Canada who is paraplegic has a problem with sores and is asking for our prayers. Please add Zacharias to your prayer list.

I have also received a request to pray for a young brother, Raymond Jimenez who has the coronavirus and needs God’s blessing in recovering and returning back to his normal life.

We received a prayer request from a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen, who has been with us in Portugal and has stood with our brothers in Brazil and with us on the issue of the Anussim (the “coerced ones”, descendants of 15th century Spanish and Portuguese Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism and who continued to secretly practice their Judaism - getting the State of Israel to accept them as Jews under the Law of Return has been an issue) and their plight…

Please keep brother Philip Marc in your prayers. Philp is a young man with very serious cancer. He is a truth seeker and a faithful disciple of Yeshua who loves God and who is a lover of Israel. Philip lives far from Israel in a country that we can’t travel to, but Philips heart is with us and with God’s people.

Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.

The situation in Israel is not getting better yet! Israel is still under closure with limited mobility and most of the economy and businesses are closed, at least for now. The economy is devastated.

I wrote last week in the Jerusalem Prayer List that it is a good work to pray for people whom you don’t know personally and to pray for the world to recover and bring an end to this horrible pandemic called the coronavirus. Corona is a crown, and I am not sure on the head of which king this virus is a crown.

1. Please keep doing intercessory prayer for the whole world, concentrate on your country, but do not forget Israel.

2. There is a blessing from God to those who pray for other brothers and sisters and intercede through the Holy Spirit for the body of the Messiah.

3. It might seem like a small thing for us to pray a few minutes for brothers and sisters around the world, but in the Kingdom and in the Heavens attention is paid by the authorities of Goodness to the caring and sincere intercessory prayer that conforms and confirms that the body of the Messiah Yeshua is truly one body.

a. Pray for all the former and present people involved in Korean Israel Bible Instruction Ministry.

b. Pray for the former board members of KIBI and those who need to repent and restore their relationship receive power from on high to do so.

c. Pray for those members and academics that are and were a part of the Israel Forum.

d. Pray for those who have prayed so faithfully for the salvation of Israel and the peace in Israel.

e. Pray for the spiritual and physical health of all those in Korea who are still praying for the body of the Messiah in Israel and specifically praying and supporting Netivyah. Bless them and inspire them and pray that they be filled with faith, hope and love for the Lord and for Israel.

Let us all pray and encourage our spiritual leaders to lead and to point us toward repentance and to confession of our sins and weaknesses, so that the Lord will lift this coronavirus from off of this earth and we will remember the Lord and seek to walk in His paths of righteousness and truth.

Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her situation and does our granddaughter Noaam. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson who are also staying at home and working from home during this time. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing. Our sister from Jerusalem, Hadassah, had her surgery for cancer and is now at home recovering. Please keep her in your prayers.

We are praying for a three-year-old little girl who is ill with a rare illness and cancer. She lives with her family in California and we need to pray for her and her family to receive attention and healing from the Lord and to be allowed to grow up to serve His kingdom.

I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer. I am praying that some of the local elders will go to Joy, anoint him with oil, and pray for his healing, in accordance with the instructions given by James the brother of Yeshua in his letter to the twelve tribes of Israel living in the diaspora.

Please pray for our brothers and sisters in Brazil. Brazil is one of the countries with a remarkably high count of sick and dead people from the coronavirus. We have brothers and sisters all around Brazil, and I ask you to just say a prayer for divine protection and for wisdom to keep them clear from this deadly plague. Also include in your prayers Caique de Oliveira Becker These are people in Brazil who need the Lord’s special grace for healing. Please do not forget to lift up in prayer the young man Paulo and the Amaral family, in Brazil.

Please keep in your prayers our dear brother Pastor TJ in Taiwan. TJ is going through a new phase in his life, having lost his wife.

Keep Ruby Little in your prayers, our dear sister from Oklahoma City, who is also battling against cancer and add to your prayers Allison Howard Williams. Allison is the daughter of one of my incredibly special teachers and friends, Dr. George Howard. Allison is also battling cancer.

Please keep praying for Samuel Lopes, a 17-year-old boy who is going through an extremely hard time. His father and mother are extremely upset that He is not walking with the Lord and I heard from his father he has joined with friends who are far from the paths of righteousness.

Please pray for the family of brother Joseph Kelber and especially for his son. Pray for Rachael and Daniel, a brother and sister who need jobs and emotional healing. Lift these brothers and sisters in your prayers: Angela Isby, Aries Franklin Mayers Sr., and Tony Black. Keep praying for Nancy, Don and their son Aaron Hook, Rachel David Kim’s wife – Jingyung Lee, Dr. Yuizawa, Tiz H., Lion H., Michael Schiffman, Joe Mays, Ilana Abramov, Cynthia Parveen’s sister, David Stern and his family, Anne West who is now 100 years old. Remember the following brothers and sisters from the Roeh Israel Congregation in Jerusalem; Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Zvi D. and Bathsheba, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their baby, and pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan. Sister Yoko had a stroke, and we pray that her recovery will be quick and full.

I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is in the hospital and his condition is particularly challenging. Please join us in lifting Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias in your prayers.

Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.

Please add to your prayers the family of Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy their son. I believe that this is a good thing for us to pray for friends and acquaintances who are Muslims. It is an act of love and reconciliation to carry before the throne of mercy those dear people who are seeking peace and righteousness looking toward the Lord for mercy and healing.

By praying for people who are your brothers and sisters, and whom you do not know personally, you are exercising the right to be God’s ambassador in what is called “agape love.” “Agape love” is the highest form of love, a love that does not look for earthly rewards or give and take, but just does the service of intercession in the kingdom of God.

You will be blessed by the almighty God who gives each of His children good for the good we do and recompense for the bad we do. Your sincere prayers for people around the world do the following things for the Kingdom, the King, and for the body of the Messiah:

1. They unite you and the body in a major transcendent bond of prayer.

2. They demonstrate the oneness of the people of God.

3. Your prayer shows that there are people outside the realm of the physical world and personal interests who have a sincere bond and relationship that is heavenly and not earthly.

4. The Lord knows His children and gives credit and reward according to His promises.

Ahuva. Please pray for a dear brother who is well into his 90’s and lost his wife a couple of weeks ago. His name is Dov H. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from cancer in her body.

Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.

Businesses are closing, and bankruptcy is happening to old established companies and businesses and even our national airline is on the verge of bankruptcy. People do not have money to put food on their tables. The number of people in need of basic food is growing.

Netivyah has been feeding the poor of Jerusalem for more than 25 years and we have a highly appreciated humanitarian ministry that is working with the Jerusalem municipality. As the demands for food for people who never before needed such help grows, I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage: www.netivyah.org and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.

Our prime minister’s case is still before the courts. I am not happy that this is happening in Israel, but I am praying that true justice and righteousness is exhibited in our court system. The truth must come out and I am not interested in a second prime minister of Israel going to jail. We have had a president in jail, a finance minister in jail, a minister of interior affairs in jail, and a member of the parliament in jail. Enough!

I was asked by brothers and sisters of the Messianic congregation, Shoresh David (The Root of David) in Portland, Oregon, to pray for Portland. Anarchist elements have taken the center of Portland, OR, and turned it into chaos, and disorder. So, please pray for Portland, OR, and for our brothers and sisters in that city.

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.

Third please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.

The aim is to provide hospitality for families of critically ill patients who are hospitalized in one of Jerusalem’s hospitals and who have no means to stay in hotels while their family members are in the hospitals.

This is a critical need especially in these days when there are hundreds of men and women who are in the Coronavirus ICU units for weeks and even months.

We need your prayer and your help to make this a meaningful and significant blessing both to the sick and to their families…
 

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish!
