======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – for Shabbat 11th of July 2026
by Joseph Shulam I am writing this prayer list from Nantau, Taiwan. We arrived today, July 6, 2026, from Korea to Taiwan. We are staying with a good friend and a dear brother in the faith and getting ready to do several seminars in Taiwan. The Torah reading of this next Shabbat is Mattot-Massei, from Numbers 30:2-36:13. A long reading in the book of Numbers. From the prophets, we will be reading with the rest of the Jews from Jeremiah 2:4-28, 3:4, and from the New Testament, the reading will be from Mark 11:12-25. The beautiful thing about the readings for this specific Shabbat—Parashat Matot-Masei (Numbers 30:2–36:13)—alongside the assigned Haftarah from Jeremiah 2–4 and the New Testament reading of Mark 11, is how tightly they interlock around one powerful, cohesive theme. Dear Brothers and sisters our reading on every Sabbath from the Torah, the same portion as all of the religious Jews in the world, is a great privilege and opportunity to unite and do something that is commanded in the New Testament and in the Prophets and in the Torah, and that is to walk humbly before the Lord and do good to people in all opportunities. The most important point connecting all three readings is the danger of superficial ownership, spiritual defilement, and the demand for genuine fruitfulness over empty ritual. The Torah in Numbers chapters 30 through 36 is one of the hardest texts for any Jew that has a heart for the Land of Israel today because we are in a similar situation in our relationship to the Land and to the Lord God of Israel now in the 21st Century. For me, the words of God to Moses and the children of Israel in chapter 30 ought to be etched on the inside walls of every home in Israel. Because, much to my regret, some of the practices criticized by God to Moses and the children of Israel are still a problem because for many, words and promises are like clouds in the sky. They are spoken, and they are heard, and the promises are clearly marked, but the fulfillment of these words and promises doesn't often see the daylight of reality. These are the words that God spoke to Moses and are recorded in the book of Numbers, chapter 30: "Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes concerning the children of Israel, saying, 'This is the thing which the LORD has commanded: If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. "Or if a woman makes a vow to the LORD and binds herself by some agreement while in her father's house in her youth, and her father hears her vow and the agreement by which she has bound herself, and her father holds his peace, then all her vows shall stand, and every agreement with which she has bound herself shall stand. But if her father overrules her on the day that he hears, then none of her vows nor her agreements by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the LORD will release her, because her father overruled her." (Numbers 30:1-5 NKJV) I am not happy that the Torah actually "picks" on the women in this matter, but I didn't write these words; these words of the Torah are God's words of instruction to the children of Israel just before they are going to cross the Jordan River in the land of Canaan that was promised to Abraham and his seed as an inheritance. Today in our world where so many have fancy cellular phones that you can talk with them from any location to any other location of this earth and if you wish to see the person on the other end of the line physically in reality there is no problem just push the button. But, we still have the same problem that God warns our forefathers thousands of years ago. It seems to me that we all, the human race, have some degree of autism that prevents us from simply receiving instruction and doing what these instructions demand so that we can have a better life and a happier society and happier families. Our Torah reading also brings a very painful and difficult issue that is one of the hottest issues in Israel today, and that is the recruitment of religious young men who ought to be serving in the army of Israel in these crazy days of a crazy war with the Palestinians in Gaza and with Hezbollah in Lebanon and with Iran: all this crazy situation and the need for more soldiers serving in the Israeli army. Soldiers to serve the army is a command in the Torah. This war is a war that is imposed upon us and all of Israel, and it ought to be the desire of every healthy Jew in the world, secular or orthodox, to serve his nation. Our Torah portion that is going to be read in all synagogues around the world is instructing the leadership of Israel to obliterate the idolatry out of the camp of Israel and restore the worship of God. This ancient problem that accompanied most of Israel's history needs in our age of smart phones and computers and I pad to mobilize and restore the simple and clear worship of God, the creator of the world. The western world has gone through the Age of Enlightenment but has never taken the issue of idolatry and all of its evils and immoralities to task. Here is how these three distinct texts weave together into a single, profound message: 1. The Torah Portion (Matot-Masei): Safeguarding the Promised Inheritance In the final chapters of Numbers, God lays out two strict requirements for Israel before they cross the Jordan into the Promised Land: • The Obliteration of Idolatry: The Israelites are strictly commanded to drive out all the inhabitants of Canaan and utterly destroy their idols, carved stones, and pagan high places (Numbers 33:51-52). God explicitly warns that if they allow these practices to remain, they will "defile the land," and it will vomit them out. • The Borders and Distribution: The land is a holy inheritance, divided fairly by tribe. It is not a lawless possession; it is God's land where He intends to dwell among them. The Torah's Core Concept: Possession of God's promise requires absolute allegiance and the purging of competing "idols." Ritual ownership means nothing if the territory is compromised by idolatry. 2. The Prophets (Jeremiah 2-4): The Defiled Land and Withered Vine Jeremiah's prophecy acts as the tragic "realization" of the warnings given in the Torah. Writing centuries later as Babylon looms, Jeremiah uses the exact language of Matot-Masei to accuse Israel of failing their original charge. • God says, "I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable" (Jeremiah 2:7). • Instead of keeping the land clean as commanded in Numbers, Israel turned back to pagan high places and hollowed out their covenant. They kept up the outward temple sacrifices, but their hearts were completely uncircumcised (Jeremiah 4:4). The Prophet's Core Concept: Israel claimed ownership of the land and the Temple, but because they defiled it with internal idolatry, they produced rotten spiritual fruit. 3. The New Testament (Mark 11): The Withered Fig Tree and the Cleansing of the Temple When you bring Jesus' actions in Mark 11 into this stream, the connection becomes vivid. Mark 11 recounts Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the cursing of the fig tree, and the cleansing of the Temple. • The Fig Tree: Jesus looks for fruit on a leaf-covered fig tree, finds none, and curses it (Mark 11:12-14). This directly mirrors Jeremiah's imagery of Israel as a withered vine that has failed to yield the fruit of righteousness despite looking healthy from afar. • The Temple Cleansing: Jesus drives out the money changers, shouting, "Is it not written, 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it a den of robbers'" (Mark 11:17). This is an exact quotation of Jeremiah 7, heavily drawing on the warnings from Jeremiah 2–4. The New Testament's Core Concept: Jesus acts out the ultimate fulfillment of the Torah and Prophets. Just as Moses commanded the removal of defilement from the land, and Jeremiah wept over the Temple's pollution, Jesus physically purges the Temple of corrupt practices that valued economic ritual over genuine worship. Summary: The Interwoven Thread! The ultimate point linking your readings in the Torah is God's warning against complacent religion. Whether it is the ancient Israelites entering Canaan, the Judeans in Jeremiah's day relying blindly on the physical Temple building, or the religious leaders in Mark 11 running a marketplace under the guise of worship—God demands an uncompromised space where genuine, fruitful righteousness can grow.

Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.
I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah
Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.
Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.
Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.
Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.
Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.
Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.
In the U.K.:
Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.
In Finland:
ilse Luukas is having her second melanoma surgery and is asking for success in removing all the cancer. This is a repeat from 2019.
Mauno Lemponen’s health has not changed which is a good thing. They are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

Cynthia M asked you to pray for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.
Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

M. is back in the hospital for rehabilitation after being in and out the last 4 months. now and the family is asking for prayers.
Keith in Baltimore is having a terrible time with Crohn’s disease - please pray for his healing.

Irina L. needs a kidney transplant. Her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his father’s health that is in decline.
Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.
Jordan Issac - a prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)
Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip, who is 89 and is caring for Pat, in you prayers.
Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.
Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.
Barbra and Angie are in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
