이번 안식일 토라 포션은 “핀하스”라고 합니다. 토라에서 읽는 본문은 민수기 25:10-30:1입니다. 민수기에서 읽는 말씀은 거의 다섯 장이나 되어 깁니다. 이스라엘의 선지자들의 예언 선지서에서 읽는 말씀은 예레미야 1:1–2:3입니다. 그리고 신약성경에서 읽는 말씀은 누가복음 13:1-10이 될 것입니다. 비느하스 이야기는 성경 전체에서 제가 좋아하는 말씀 중 하나입니다. 비느하스라는 인물은 제게 모세오경의 가장 중요한 인물 중 한 명입니다. 왜냐하면 비느하스는 직접 율법을 집행한 젊은이로, 이스라엘의 연로한 지도자들이 그에게 명령을 내리거나 직접 행동할 때까지 기다리지 않았기 때문입니다. 사람들은 “아론의 손자 엘르아살의 아들 비느하스”를 좋아합니다.

민수기 25:10 “여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 11 제사장 아론의 손자 엘르아살의 아들 비느하스가 내 질투심으로 질투하여 이스라엘 자손 중에서 내 노를 돌이켜서 내 질투심으로 그들을 소멸하지 않게 하였도다 12 그러므로 말하라 내가 그에게 내 평화의 언약을 주리니 13 그와 그의 후손에게 영원한 제사장 직분의 언약이라 그가 그의 하나님을 위하여 질투하여 이스라엘 자손을 속죄하였음이니라”

물론, 모든 진영에는 법과 질서를 유지하고 상황을 통제하기 위한 관리자와 경찰이 있으며, 이러한 통제는 진영의 고위 지도부에서 담당합니다. 하지만 친애하는 형제자매님들, 때로는 비느하스 같이 불복종하는 젊은이가 이스라엘 민족을 수치와 불명예에서 구해내기 위해 상황은 잊고 두려움과 변명의 교착상태를 깨고 최선을 다해 행동에 나서는 일이 필요하기도 합니다. 저는 이것이 어려운 결정이라는 것을 알고 있으며, 때로는 전체 진영의 생존을 위한 전투에서 고위 관리자나 권위자의 명령을 기다리기보다는 먼저 행동에 나서고 나중에 지휘 계통을 생각해야 할 때도 있다는 것을 이해합니다. 성경 이야기의 다른 경우에서도 젊음과 즉흥성이 종종 함께 가는 경우가 있습니다. 다른 사람의 허락을 기다리지 않고 스스로 행동에 나선 사람들의 사례를 몇 가지 살펴보겠습니다!

예, 이번 안식일, 2026년 7월 4일 / 5786년 탐무즈월 19일에 읽는 말씀은 파라샤 “핀하스”, 민수기 25:10–30:1입니다. 히브리력에서 탐무즈월 19일이라고 할 때, 19일은 기수가 아닌 서수 열아홉째 날입니다.

성경에는 공식적인 명령 체계가 움직이기 전에 누군가가 행동하는 경우가 많이 나옵니다. 그러나 성경이 모든 자발적인 행동을 칭찬하는 것은 아닙니다. 어떤 행동은 거룩한 용기이고, 어떤 행동은 위험한 열정이며, 어떤 행동은 명백히 정죄 받았습니다.

다음은 사람들이 스스로 주도적으로 행동하여 다른 사람들에게서는 비난을 받았을지언정 하나님으로부터는 긍정적인 칭찬을 받은 몇 가지 예입니다.

1. 비느하스 — 민수기 25:6–13

모세와 회중이 속수무책으로 어찌할 바를 몰라 울고 있는 동안, 비느하스는 공개적인 반역과 부도덕한 행위를 목격하고 즉각적으로 일어나 행동에 나섰습니다. 하나님께서는 나중에 그의 행동을 인정하시고 “나의 평화의 언약”을 주셨습니다. 이것이 바로 핵심적인 예입니다: 열심이 나중에 하나님 앞에서 언약에 대한 충성으로 인정받은 예입니다.

2. 슬로브핫의 딸들 — 민수기 27:1–11

1. 사울이 번제 드림 — 사무엘상 13:8–14

사울은 사무엘을 기다리지 않고 제사장의 권위를 독단적으로 행사했습니다. 사무엘은 그를 꾸짖었고, 이것은 사울 왕국이 오래가지 못하게 된 한 가지 이유가 되었습니다.

2. 웃사가 법궤를 붙듦 — 사무엘하 6:6–7

베드로는 예슈아를 지키려 즉각적으로 행동했지만, 예슈아께서는 그를 꾸짖으셨습니다: “네 칼을 도로 칼집에 꽂으라.” 메시아를 위한 열심은 진짜였지만, 그 행동은 그 순간의 하나님의 뜻에 어긋난 것이었습니다.

4. 시므온과 레위 — 창세기 34장; 창세기 49:5–7

그들은 디나의 복수를 위해 세겜 사람들을 학살했습니다. 야곱은 나중에 그들의 분노와 폭력을 비난했습니다. 이것은 순간적인 행동이었지, 의로운 열심에서 비롯된 것은 아니었습니다.

성경의 교훈

성경은 관료주의에 대한 맹목적인 복종을 가르치지 않습니다. 때때로 하나님께서는 비느하스나 요나단이나 다윗이나 아비가일이나 에스더나 슬로브핫의 딸들과 같은 사람들을 세우십니다. 이들은 위기를 감지하고 지도자들이 움직이기 전에 행동하는 사람들입니다.

그런데 성경은 거룩함과 겸손, 분별력이 없는 열심은 죄가 된다고 경고도 합니다. 차이점은 다음과 같습니다:

거룩한 주도성은 하나님의 언약을 지키고, 생명을 구하며, 더 큰 죄를 막고, 나아가 하나님의 말씀으로 확증됩니다. 반면에 거짓된 열심은 분노나 교만이나 복수심이나 조급함으로 일합니다.

그러므로 비느하스의 사례는 모든 개인이 신성한 목적이나 목표를 내세워 폭력을 행사해도 된다는 일반적 허용을 의미하는 것은 아닙니다. 비느하스는 이스라엘 백성의 위대한 지도자들, 즉 모세와 제사장들과 성막에서 섬기는 자들이 두려움과 불안에 얼어붙어 있는 모습을 보고, 이스라엘의 고위 지도자들이 하지 못했던 일을 직접 처리한 보기 드문 젊은이입니다. 비느하스는 이전에는 결코 일어나지 않았던 일이라는 사실 때문에 사람들이 느꼈을 수치심과 불안감, 그리고 열의 부족을 극복했습니다.

모세와 성막에서 섬기는 제사장들 같은 늙은 지도자들은 너무나 혼란스럽고 당황하여, 자기 부족의 젊은 지도자와 미디안 공주가 이스라엘 진영 한가운데 서 있는 하나님의 거룩한 성막 바로 앞에서 공개적으로 성관계를 맺는다는 끔찍한 일을 상상조차 할 수 없었습니다. 모든 지도자들은 그 광경을 지켜보며 슬픔과 두려움에 속수무책인 채, 이들 늙은 지도자들 중 누구도 이스라엘의 모든 지도자들 앞에서 벌어지는 이 가증스러운 일을 막기 위해 아무런 행동도 취하려 하지 않았습니다.

비느하스는 그러한 공적 위기 속에서 언약적 열심을 보여준 보기 드문 본보기입니다. 비느하스는 이스라엘의 늙은 지도부가 공개적으로 굴욕을 겪으며, 이스라엘의 하나님과 이스라엘 민족을 곤란에서 벗어나게 하기 위해 신속하게 행동할 능력이 마비된 것과, 이방인들이 마치 이스라엘의 하나님이 무능해진 것처럼 행세하는 것을 목격한 젊은이입니다. 그래서 비느하스라는 젊은이는 후에 하나님께서 친히 옳다고 인정하신 행동에 나섰습니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘의 하나님이 무능하고 무력하다는 것을 보여주려 했던 공개적인 죄인들에 맞서 비느하스가 보여준 주도성과 행동을 보상하셨습니다.

젊은 비느하스가 보여준 것은 반대였습니다. 그는 그 가증스러운 행위를 막고, 이스라엘의 하나님께서는 능력 있으시며 이스라엘 자손에게는 사자의 심장을 가진 젊은 영웅들이 있어서 할례받지 않은 이방인이 죄를 짓는 도중에 그를 즉시 제지하고 이스라엘과 주변의 이교도들에게 하나님의 영광을 회복시키기 위해 행동에 나섰습니다. 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱의 하나님께 대한 존경과 경외심을 지우는 유대 민족의 어린 사자들 없이는 하나님의 영광이 짓밟힐 수 없다는 것을 보여준 것입니다.

비느하스 이야기의 더 폭넓은 교훈

1) 그 교훈은 하나님의 영광을 지키고 보호하려는 올바른 동기에서 비롯된 거룩한 행동, 즉 용기와 순수한 양심은 그 어떤 대가를 치르더라도 언제나 환영받는다는 것입니다! 하나님께서는 사람의 마음을 아시고, 그들의 행동이 진실함과 순수한 소원에서 비롯된 것인지, 하나님의 이름이 영광 받으시고 보호받기를 바라는 마음에서 비롯된 것인지 알고 계십니다.

2) 최고 지도부의 승인 없이 행해진 그러한 열정적인 행동에 대한 궁극적인 시험은, 진영의 다른 사람들의 반응을 고려하지 않고 기꺼이 대열에서 벗어나 용감하게 행동하는 남녀에게 하나님께서 주시는 보상과 칭찬입니다. 하나님께서는 우리의 마음을 들여다보시고, 우리가 때때로 명령 체계를 따르지 않고, 행동하기 전에 세 부의 사본을 첨부하여 서면으로 허가를 구하지 않았다는 이유로 대열에서 벗어나고 잘못된 것처럼 보이는 행동을 하는 이유를 정확히 알고 계십니다. 시간상 기다릴 수 없고, 진영의 실무 책임자와 기술 관료들의 적절한 절차 없이 행동을 취한 것에 대한 대가를 치러야 할 수도 있다는 가능성이 있고 그러한 가능성을 앎에도 행동에 나서야 하는 때가 있습니다.

하나님을 섬기는 우리 모두가 직면해야 할 최종 시험은 사람들이 그렇게 용감한 하나님의 종에 대해 뭐라고 말할지가 아니라, 시간과 기회가 낭비되고 악이 이길 수 있는 상황에서 하나님께서 어떻게 행동하실 것인가 하는 것입니다. 하나님의 명령, 정의, 공동체의 생명이 위태로울 때, 의로운 사람들이 “명령을 기다린다”거나 결과를 두려워하는 핑계 뒤에 숨어서는 안 되는 순간들이 있습니다. 일어나서 행동하고 옳은 일을 하며 양심에 따라 행동하고 두려움과 불안감을 떨쳐버리십시오. 제 생각에는 기다리고 계산하며 불안감 때문에 옳고 용감한 일을 할 기회를 놓치는 것보다 비느하스처럼 행동하는 것이 훨씬 낫습니다.

이번 토라 포션과, 젊은 비느하스와, 비느하스가 이스라엘 12지파 진영 한가운데 있는 회막인 하나님의 성막 앞에서, 그것도 사람들 앞에서 가증한 행위를 저지른 이스라엘의 남자와 여자를 죽였을 때 하나님께서 보이신 반응에서 제가 배운 것은 이것입니다. 비느하스는 언제나 영웅으로 기억될 것이며, 하나님의 영광을 지키고 남들이 자신에게 씌울지도 모르는 부정적인 평가를 계산하지 않고, 현세와 내세에서 합당한 보상을 주실 의로우시고 공정하신 하나님을 의지하는 용감한 사람들을 하나님께서는 친히 이해하시고 보상하신다는 것을 보여준 사람으로 기억될 것입니다. 이스라엘의 하나님께서는 여러분의 마음을 꿰뚫어 보시고, 여러분이 하나님의 영광을 드러내고 보호하며 그분의 이름에 찬양과 영광을 돌리기 위해 스스로 행하는 일들의 진정한 동기와 소원이 무엇인지 알고 계십니다!

제가 위에서 언급한 모든 사례에서 저는 비느하스와 그의 행동에서 나타나는 동일한 특징들을 봅니다. 사사기 4~5장에 기록된 것처럼, 이스라엘 사람이 아닌 야엘이라는 여인이 하솔 왕 야빈의 군대 장군 시스라를 영접하고 그의 머리를 천막 말뚝으로 꽂아 죽인 사건을 생각해 보십시오. 야엘의 행동은 너무나 극적이고 중요해서, 이스라엘의 여사사 드보라는 실제로 겐 족속(이스라엘이 하나님께서 아브라함과 그의 자손에게 주신 가나안 땅에 정착하던 시기에 이스라엘 편에 섰던 비-이스라엘 족속) 출신의 이 여인을 언급했습니다.

여기 또 다른 예가 있습니다. 베들레헴 출신의 어린 양치기 소년 다윗은 이스라엘 군대와 사울 왕 앞에서 할례받지 않은 블레셋 거인을 상대로 용감하게 싸워 그를 쓰러뜨렸습니다. 그는 형들이나 아버지의 허락, 또는 하나님의 직접적인 허락도 받지 않았습니다.

이 본문은 예수님께서도 틀을 벗어나 행동해야 할 필요가 있을 때는 틀을 벗어나 행동하셨고 그렇게 하는 것이 옳다는 것을 제자들에게 모범을 보이셨음을 보여줍니다.

“그 때 마침 두어 사람이 와서 빌라도가 어떤 갈릴리 사람들의 피를 그들의 제물에 섞은 일로 예수께 아뢰니 대답하여 이르시되 너희는 이 갈릴리 사람들이 이같이 해 받으므로 다른 모든 갈릴리 사람보다 죄가 더 있는 줄 아느냐 너희에게 이르노니 아니라 너희도 만일 회개하지 아니하면 다 이와 같이 망하리라 또 실로암에서 망대가 무너져 치어 죽은 열여덟 사람이 예루살렘에 거한 다른 모든 사람보다 죄가 더 있는 줄 아느냐 너희에게 이르노니 아니라 너희도 만일 회개하지 아니하면 다 이와 같이 망하리라” (누가복음 13:1-5)

랍비셨던 예슈아는 주변의 험담하는 무리를 돌아서게 하시고, 이스라엘 여성으로서 관습을 깨고 군사 지도자가 되어, 북쪽에서부터 지중해 연안을 따라 이집트와 아프리카로 이어지는 국제 도로의 중요한 전초 기지였던 하솔 왕의 군대와 싸웠던 드보라의 예를 드셨습니다.

제가 특히 비느하스의 이야기를 좋아하는 이유는 이것이 제가 이스라엘과 예슈아의 유대인 제자들 안에서 하나님의 나라와 예슈아의 복음을 위해 했던 많은 일들이 틀에 박힌 사고방식에서 벗어난 것이었고 지금도 그러하다는 것을 확인시켜 주기 때문입니다. 제게 있어 그 틀은 하나님께서 만드신 것이 아니었습니다. 그 틀은 하나님의 사람들로 하여금 하나님에 대한 믿음과 메시아 예슈아의 관계를 마음과 영혼의 감옥에 가두게 하는 4x4 크기의 울타리와 같습니다. 그 틀에 갇히게 하는 제약에서 벗어나는 유일한 길은, 그 틀을 깨고 나와 하나님의 성령께서 인도하시고 방향을 제시하도록 해드리고, 두려움과 용기를 동시에 여러분의 손에 두고 그 둘의 균형을 유지하며, 평범한 보통 사람들이 불안과 두려움에 사로잡혀 속수무책으로 조류와 파도가 기회와 시간의 해안을 휩쓸고 지나가는 것을 지켜보는 동안, 용기 있는 마음과 깊은 믿음으로 행동하는 것입니다!

제 좌우명은 간단합니다: “예슈아의 이름으로 세상에 기쁨과 축복을 가져오고 선을 행할 기회가 있다면, 할 수 있을 때 주저하지 말고 하라!”는 것입니다. 옳고 선한 일을 할 기회를 놓치는 것보다 실수하는 것이 훨씬 낫습니다!

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 4 July, 2026

The reading for this next Shabbat is the portion called Pinchas. The reading of the Torah for this next Shabbat is from Numbers 25:10-30:1. It is a long reading of nearly five chapters from the book of Numbers. From the prophets of Israel, the reading will be from Jeremiah 1:1 – 2:3. And from the New Testament the reading will be from Luke 13:1-10. The story of Pinchas is one of my favorites in the whole Bible. The character of Pinchas is, for me, one of the most important characters in the law of Moses. Because Pinchas is a young man who takes the law in his hands and doesn't wait for the mature leadership of Israel to give him an order or to act themselves. People like "Pinchas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron."

Numbers 25:10 "Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 11 "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. 12 Therefore say, "Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace; 13 and it shall be to him and his descendants after him a covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was zealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel."

So, what did this grandson of Aaron the High Priest of Israel and the brother of Moses do to deserve such praise and honour"? Simply stated this Phinehas, a young man, the grandson of Aaron the brother of Moses took the law in his own hands and did what needed to be done, but was not done because the chain of command in the camp of Israel was too old, too confused, too afraid, too insecure, and too busy with their own fears to take action and stop the abomination and shame that was taking place in the camp of Israel and right in front of the Tabernacle of God! Events like this that the leaders and elders and the mature servants of God stood and watched the abominable acts that were taken right in front of the Tabernacle of God and they were ringing their hands at the horror and shame but didn't know what to do or actually were frozen in their place watching the abominable act that the leaders of the tribes of Israel and the priests were there watching when Pinchas the son of Eleazar and the grandson of Aaron the brother of Moses the High Priest. Please, dear readers, let me sharpen the issue of this Torah portion. Obviously there has to be law and order and not everyone can take the law into their own hands or the whole camp would become an insubordination.

Obviously, there are all camp officers and police to keep the law and order and make sure that things stay under control, and the controls are administered by the senior leadership of the camp. But dear brothers and sisters sometimes it takes such an insubordinate young person like Phinehas to break the deadlock of fear and excuses and take action to the best of his ability and put the event behind him to save the nation of Israel from shame and dishonor. I know that this is a hard decision to take and act impulsively with the understanding that at times a man has to take action first and think of the chain of command later during a battle for the survival of the whole camp rather than waiting for a more senior officer or a man of authority to give the order. Youth and spontaneity often go together very nicely in other cases in the biblical narrative. Here are some other such cases where individuals took the law into their own hands and took action, not waiting for permission from anyone else!

Yes. This coming Shabbat, July 4, 2026 / 19 Tammuz 5786, the reading is Parashat Pinchas, Numbers 25:10–30:1. It is not Numbers 19; the "19th" is the Hebrew date, 19 Tammuz.

The Bible has many cases where someone acts before the formal chain of command moves. But Scripture does not praise every spontaneous action. Some are holy courage; some are dangerous zeal; some are plainly condemned.

Here are some examples of people taking action on their own initiative and received positive praise from God even if they would be criticized by the people.

1. Pinchas — Numbers 25:6–13

Pinchas sees a public act of rebellion and immorality while Moses and the congregation are weeping and wringing their hands without knowing what to do in the situation: Pinchas rises and acts immediately. God later confirms his action and gives him "My covenant of peace." This is the central example: zeal that is later judged by God as covenant loyalty.

2. The daughters of Zelophehad — Numbers 27:1–11

This is in the same Torah portion. Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah do not wait silently for the system to notice their injustice. They come before Moses, Eleazar, the leaders, and the congregation and ask for inheritance rights. God says: "The daughters of Zelophehad speak what is right." This is spontaneous initiative but done respectfully through the proper public forum.

3. Jonathan and his armor-bearer — 1 Samuel 14:1–15

Jonathan does not wait for King Saul's order. He says, in effect, that the LORD can save "by many or by few," and he attacks the Philistine outpost with only his armor-bearer. The result is panic in the Philistine camp and deliverance for Israel.

4. David against Goliath — 1 Samuel 17

The army and King Saul are paralyzed by fear. David, still a young man, cannot tolerate the defiance of "the armies of the living God." His initiative begins outside the military chain of command, though Saul later allows him to go.

5. Abigail — 1 Samuel 25

Abigail acts quickly without waiting for her foolish husband, Nabal. She brings food, humbles herself, and stops David from committing bloodshed. David blesses her wisdom and says God sent her to prevent him from taking vengeance.

6. Jael — Judges 4–5

Jael acts alone against Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army. Deborah's song later blesses her action: "Most blessed among women is Jael." This is another case where a person outside the official military command becomes the instrument of deliverance.

7. Esther — Esther 4–5

Esther risks approaching the king without being summoned. She says, "If I perish, I perish." Her action is not violent like Pinchas', but it is a courageous initiative taken before there is any official permission.

Examples where spontaneous action is condemned or dangerous!

1. Saul offering the sacrifice — 1 Samuel 13:8–14

Saul does not wait for Samuel. He takes priestly authority into his own hands. Samuel rebukes him, and this becomes one reason Saul's kingdom will not continue.

2. Uzzah touching the ark — 2 Samuel 6:6–7

Uzzah reaches out to steady the ark when the oxen stumble. His instinct may seem practical, even respectful, but it violates God's holiness and commandment.

3. Peter cutting off the servant's ear — John 18:10–11; Matthew 26:52

Peter acts immediately to defend Yeshua, but Yeshua rebukes him: "Put your sword into the sheath." Zeal for the Messiah was real, but the action contradicted God's purpose at that moment.

4. Simeon and Levi — Genesis 34; Genesis 49:5–7

They avenge Dinah by slaughtering the men of Shechem. Jacob later condemns their anger and violence. This is spontaneous action, but not righteous zeal.

The biblical lesson

The Bible does not teach blind obedience to bureaucracy. Sometimes God raises a Pinchas, a Jonathan, a David, an Abigail, an Esther, or the daughters of Zelophehad — people who see a crisis and act before the leaders move.

But the Bible also warns us that zeal without holiness, humility, and discernment becomes sin. The difference is this:

Holy initiative protects God's covenant, saves life, prevents greater sin, and is later confirmed by God's word. False zeal serves anger, pride, revenge, or impatience.

So Pinchas example does not give a general permission for every private person to act with violence with a supposedly holy goal or purpose. Pinchas is a rare example of a young man who sees the great leaders of the people of Israel, Moses himself, and the Priests and those who serve in the Holy Tabernacle frozen with fear and insecurity. Pinchas the young zealot who takes matters in his own hands does what the top leadership of the people of Israel could not do. Pinchas saves the shame and insecurity and lack of zeal based on the fact that such an event has never happened before.

So, the old leaders like Moses and the priests that served in the holy Tabernacle just were so confused and bewildered that they couldn't even imagine that such a horrible thing that a young leader of his tribe and a Midianite princess would copulate publicly right in-front of the Holy Tabernacle of God that stood in the middle of the camp of Israel and all the leadership is watching and standing ringing their hands with sorrow and fear and not one of these old leaders would take action to stop the abomination that was taking place in front of all the leadership of Israel.

Pinchas is a rare example of covenantal zeal during such a public crisis. Pinchas is a young man whose eyes have seen the public humiliation of the old leadership of Israel and the frozen ability to take a quick action to exonerate the God of Israel and the nation of Israel and the demonstration of the pagans as if the God of Israel had become impotent. So, this young man named Pinchas took action that later was confirmed by God Himself to be the right thing to do. God rewards Pinchas for the initiative and action that he took against the public sinners whose aim was to show that the God of Israel is powerless and impotent.

The opposite was demonstrated by young Pinchas who took the action to stop the abomination and a to prove that the God of Israel is potent and that the children of Israel have young heroes with lion hearts that will stop any uncircumcised gentile cold in the middle of his sinful action and restore for Israel and for the observing pagans around that God's honour can't be trampled under-foot without the young lions of the Jewish nation cleaning the honour and respect for the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob's.

The broader lesson from the story of Pinchas

1) is that courage and purity of conscience that brings holy action with the right motivation to protect and save the honour of God is always welcome no matter what the price of such zeal and action might be! God sees the heart of men and knows where their actions are a fruit of sincerity, pure desire to see the name of God honored and protected.

2) The ultimate test of such zealous action taken without the approval of the top leaders is the reward and praise that God gives those brave souls that are willing to step out of the line-up and stand out as brave men or women not taking into account the reaction of the rest of the camp. God looks into our hearts and know exactly why sometimes we do things that seem out of line and wrong because we didn't follow the chain of command and ask permission in writing with three-plicate copies before taking action. There is a time that time does not allow waiting and action must be taken even with the possibility and knowledge that there might be a price to pay for going ahead and taking action without the proper protocol from the acting directors and technocrats of the camp.

The final test that every one of us who serves God has to be not what people might say about such a brave servant of God, but how God will act in a case that time and opportunity could be wasted, and evil might win. When the commandment of God, justice, and the life of the community are at stake, there are moments when righteous people must not hide behind "waiting for orders" or fearing the consequences. Get up and act and do what is right and follow your conscience and leave the fears and insecurities on the side. It is best, in my opinion, to be a Pinchas rather than wait and calculate and allow your insecurities to miss the opportunity to do what is right and courageous.

What I learned from this Torah portion and from the young man Pinchas and from God's reaction to what Pinchas did when he killed both the man and the women of Israel that did the abominable act in front of the tent of meeting the tabernacle of God in the middle of the encampment of the 12 tribes of Israel and in front of the public. Pinchas will always be counted as a hero and one that saved God's honour and showed that God Himself understands and rewards such brave people who don't calculate the negative that men might attribute to them but count on the God of Righteousness and Justice to give you the right reward now in this life and in the life to come. For the God of Israel sees into your heart and knows what the true motivation and desire is when you do things on your own to bless and protect the reputation of God Himself and bring praise and Glory to His name!

I see in all the examples that I brought above the same characteristics as in Pinchas and his action. Just think of this non-Israelite woman named Jael who welcomed Sisra, the general of the armies of Jabin, the king of Hazor, and pins his head with her tent peg. As recorded in Judges 4–5. Jael's action is so dramatic and so important that Deborah the female judge of Israel actually has this woman from the tribe of the Kanites (non-Israelite tribe that took the side of Israel during the period of their settlement in the Canaan that was given by God to Abraham and his seed.

Here is another such example of someone called David, a young shepherd boy from Bethlehem who in the face of the army of Israel and King Saul takes action against the uncircumcised Philistine giant and brings him down without a permission from his brothers and from his father or a direct permission from God.

This text shows that Yeshua also acted and instructed his disciples by his own example that when it is necessary to act outside the box, it is also right to act outside the Box.

"There were present at that season some who told Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answered and said to them, "Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish." (Luke 13:1-5 NKJV)

Yeshua as a Rabbi turned the gossiping lot around him and brought the example of Deborah who as an Israelite female broke the norm and served as a military leader leading the armies of Israel against the army of the king of Hazor that was an important out post on the international road that led from the north toward the way of the sea that ran on the coast of the Mediterranean sea toward Egypt and Africa.

I like especially the story of Pinchas because it is a kind affirmation that many of the things that I have done for the Kingdom of God and for the Good News of Yeshua in the context of Israel and the Jewish disciples of Yeshua are and were outside the box. For me, the box was not a creation of God. The box is a 4x4 enclosure that restricts the men of God from allowing his faith in God and the relationship with Yeshua the Messiah in a type of prison of the mind and soul. There is only one way out of that restriction in the box and that is to break out of the box and allow the Holy Spirit of God to lead you and direct you and put both fear and courage in your hands to balance those with a courageous hearts and deep faith to take action when the regular normal and run of the mill ring their hands with insecurity and fear and watch the tide and waves wash along the shores of opportunity and time leaving such leaders standing on the shore and watching waves of time fade away into the sand!

My motto is simple when you have opportunity to do good and bring joy and blessing in the name of Yeshua into this world - don't hesitate to do it while you can! It is better to make a mistake than to miss the opportunity to do what is right and good!

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 update Elihana Elia still battling cancer. please keep her in your prayers for her treatments and healing.

Please pray for me to have God’s healing of my body and protection for my travels in the summer to Finland to participate in a summer seminar for our brothers and sisters in Finland. From Finland to Japan and from Japan to Taiwan and from there to Hong Kong and back home to Israel.

I do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters around the world for the situation of the war in Israël. The enemies of israel are ancient and their enmity is deep. They have inherited hate for the Jews from biblical times, they are the descendants of Amalek and Persia is the continuation of Haman from the book of Ester who had designed to destroy the whole Jewish nation. The disciples of Yeshua the messiah

Antisemitism in the world is growing and the disciples of Yeshua need to stand firm to stop the hate of Jews just because they are Jews and stand with and for the Jewish people! Yeshua our Lord is coming back to Jerusalem. Please pray protection also for our Arab brothers and sisters who are disciples of the Messiah who live in Arab lands.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki who came to Israel in 1960s and served as a medical nurse in Hadassah hospital and now she is 100 with a home care taker.

 Judy is 100 years old and has been placed in a special home for her needs.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

In the U.K.:

 Pray for Deborah Isaiah. I pray for the Lord to find Deborah Isaiah and lead her to a blessed life, family, and a solution to her problems.

In Finland:

 ilse Luukas is having her second melanoma surgery and is asking for success in removing all the cancer. This is a repeat from 2019.

 Mauno Lemponen’s health has not changed which is a good thing. They are evaluating moving closer to other family members — prayers for Hilkka, Miika, and Ester who will support this possible change. Please pray as moving is always a big task.

 Pray for Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami, our dear sisters.

 Pray for Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia, Victor, Aaron Tani, and Hillel.

 Pray for the family of X in Finland who are waiting to see their children and Grandchildren to be in faith in the Lord. its stressful to not have all your children walk in faith.

In Denmark:

 Cynthia M asked you to pray for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma, and has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications, and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

In Brazil:

 Sister Rosie needs prayers to overcome fears of traveling by plane.

 Hannah and her family are in Dubai. They need prayer to make plans on either leaving or stay in dubai since that's where they are currently employed.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 Pray for a dear sister named Claudia Rita Souze Arau. She has cancer and needs God’s healing hands to touch her with healing.

In Asia:

 Pray for Pastor T.J. in Taiwan.

 Pray for Deborah Ruth, a dear sister from China.

 Pray for Sister Yoko Nagumo in Japan.

 Tony Tam, his wife Luisa, and his son Marco need special prayers for their situation.

In the United States of America:

 new Beth had her back go out and we had to cancel attending the MJAA conference this year. she is doing better and is able to get around.

 new Danah is going to have a small medical procedure in the next month. asking for prayers for it to go well and scheduling to work out with other commitments.

 M. is back in the hospital for rehabilitation after being in and out the last 4 months. now and the family is asking for prayers.

 Keith in Baltimore is having a terrible time with Crohn’s disease - please pray for his healing.

 Bart Hill has aplastic anemia. His family and friends are asking for prayers for recovery and strength.

 Judith is asking for prayers to her kidney function and painful neuropathy. Please pray for her healing. She so desperately needs some relief.

 Chatica was raised by her grandmother who is going through initial stages of dimensia. Pray for and family that are navigating this new phase of care for her.

 Cindy has been fighting spiritual battles at work for many years and is asking for God to open a door for her if it is His will for her to move on.

 I ask for prayers for divine intervention in the lives of my sister-in-law “A” and her husband, my brother, “G” and their son. l am begging the Eternal for healing and salvation for this family.

 Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

 Ray H. is having a similar health issue to Marcia Shulam, where the blood pressure drops when we stands up.

 Irina L. needs a kidney transplant. Her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. On September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also, an interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his father’s health that is in decline.

 Shirleyann - has had a rough time with water retention and hydration medications. Her next doctors appointment is in July. Keep her in your prayer’s. She had to have her legs wrapped and we are praying for her to improve and not have to go to the hospital. It’s a setback.

 Jordan Issac - a prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing tests for breast cancer, and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez turned 100 this past Tuesday dec 23. She is in a wheelchair, recovering from a hip surgery, and is dealing with dementia. continue to pray for her and her family (Aida is taking care of it)

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip, who is 89 and is caring for Pat, in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good.

 Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable, and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing, strength, and comfort for Jill and Bill.

 Barbra and Angie are in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 Pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. Her health is in a decline. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
