by Barry Shulam Torah: Leviticus 12:1-15:33; Numbers 28:9-15 Haftarah: 2 Kings 4:42–5:19 New Testament: Hebrews 10:1-18 Tazria – When Distance Meets Desire to Restore Dear friends, as we sit with parashat Tazria this week (Leviticus 12:1–13:59), and with the haftarah about Naaman's healing (2 Kings 4:42–5:19), there is tension. Impurity, distance, and shame on one side; and on the other, God's steady desire to be near us and to bring us back. In Tazria, we see how a woman after childbirth goes through a time of tumah, ritual impurity, and then brings offerings as she returns fully to the life of the sanctuary. “Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a woman conceive seed, and bear a man-child, then she shall be unclean seven days… And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled… she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt-offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtle-dove, for a sin-offering” (JPS, Leviticus 12:2, 6). The birth itself is a gift, yet the blood and vulnerability around it reveal that life in this world is fragile and not yet fully whole. Then we meet the person with tzaraat, with marks on the skin that the priest must examine, and if the condition persists, “He shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his dwelling be" (JPS, Leviticus 13:46). It is hard to read those words without feeling the loneliness of someone who has to live at a distance, marked as unclean, maybe wondering if they will ever be fully welcomed back. The haftarah lets us watch one such person—Naaman, an Aramean commander—move from that kind of distance back toward healing. He comes to Elisha still carrying his status and pride, and when the prophet simply tells him to wash seven times in the Jordan, he is offended at the simplicity of it. But when he finally humbles himself and goes down into Israel's river, "his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean” (KJV, 2 Kings 5:14). In that moment, his shame and uncleanness give way to a new beginning, and he confesses that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel. The God of Israel draws someone from the nations close, through the word of a Jewish prophet, through the waters of a Jewish river, and through obedience that looks small but changes everything. When we listen to the New Testament, we hear the same heart of God, still working inside Israel's life. Luke tells us about “a man full of leprosy” who falls on his face before Yeshua and says, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them” (KJV, Luke 5:12–14). In Mark, we hear the same cry, "If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean," and the same compassionate response, "I will; be thou clean” (KJV, Mark 1:40–42). The man has lived the reality of Tazria—outside, ashamed, avoided—yet in one touch, Yeshua makes him clean and sends him right back into the Torah pattern of seeing the priest and bringing the proper offering. For me, this is where the tension becomes very personal. Many of us carry our own version of tzaraat. It may not show on our skin, but we know the feeling of wanting to hide: a secret sin, a failure that still stings, a habit we can’t quite shake, or even a sense that we are “too much” or “not enough” for the community we long to be part of. Tazria tells us the truth: impurity and brokenness create distance; they are significant. At the same time, the whole structure of priests, examinations, and offerings shows that God has no interest in pushing us away forever. He is making a path, however slow and structured, for us to come back. Naaman and the leper in the Gospels both meet this God who is not embarrassed by their condition. Naaman is met in his pride and invited to humble trust. The leper is met in his desperation and fear, and Yeshua does the most unexpected thing — He touches the untouchable. In both the old and new covenants, the Holy One is moving toward the person who feels far away, with an invitation: “Come, let Me make you clean; walk with Me in the way I have given.” When Hebrews later says that Yeshua “suffered without the gate” and urges us to “go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach” (KJV, Hebrews 13:12–13), it is as if He is standing beside every person who has ever felt pushed out, saying, “I know this place, and from here I will lead you home.” So as we live with Tazria this week, maybe the question for us is simple and close to the heart: where do we feel far? Is there a place where we have quietly accepted distance—from God, from His people, from our own calling—because shame or impurity seems to define us? If so, could we dare to bring that place into the light with the same simple honesty as the leper: “If Thou wilt, Thou canst make me clean”? A whispered prayer, tears in a quiet room, a conversation with a trusted friend, or returning to a community gathering we have avoided. And on the other side, who in our world is living outside the camp in their own way? A neighbor, a family member, someone in our congregation? Yeshua’s touch gives us courage to move toward them gently, to listen, to stand with them as they seek their own way back into closeness with God and His people. My hope and prayer for us is that as we hear about impurity, distance, and shame in these readings, we will not stop there, but will let our hearts rest in the deeper story: the God of Israel who longs to dwell in our midst, who provides priests and prophets and, in the fullness of time, a Messiah within Israel’s own life to cleanse and restore. May we feel His nearness right where we feel least worthy of it, and may we become, in small and humble ways, carriers of that nearness to others. Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.
