토라 포션 바이가쉬 (“그가 다가갔다”)

토라: 창세기 44:18-47:27

하프타라: 에스겔 37:15-28

신약성경: 요한복음 10:22-42

저는 이번 주 토라 포션 “바이가쉬”를 읽으면서 속에서 불이 났습니다. 왜 그랬는지 짧게 설명해 드리겠습니다.

파라샤 바이가쉬는 토라 중에서 감정적, 신학적으로 긴장된 순간으로 시작됩니다.

“유다가 그에게 가까이 가서 이르되 내 주여 원하건대 당신의 종에게 내 주의 귀에 한 말씀을 아뢰게 하소서 주의 종에게 노하지 마소서 주는 바로와 같으심이니이다” (창세기 44:18)

히브리 본문은 이렇게 시작됩니다:

וַיִּגַּשׁ אֵלָיו יְהוּדָה — 바이가쉬 엘라브 예후다, “유다가 가까이 갔다.”

이것은 물리적 움직임입니다. 그런데 또 한편, 성경 히브리어에서 바이가쉬는 다음과 같은 신호입니다:

‣ 용기 있는 대면

‣ 도덕적 책임

‣ 권력자 앞에 기꺼이 서려는 의지

‣ 아이에게 다가가는 할아버지의 다정함

유다는 뒤로 물러나지 않습니다. 그는 진실을 가지고 권위자에게 다가갑니다.

유다가 운을 뗀 말은 신중합니다:

דָּבָר בְּאָזְנֵי אֲדֹנִי

다바르 베오즈네이 아도니 — “내 주의 귀에 한 말씀”

이 표현은 아첨 없는 존중과 반역 없는 긴박함을 담고 있으며 직설적으로 진실을 말하되 거짓을 속삭이지는 않습니다. 유다는 요셉을 조종하고 있는 것이 아닙니다. 그는 권력을 이용하는 것이 아니라 양심에 호소하고 있는 것입니다. 이는 이 파라샤 전반에 도덕적 분위기를 드리웁니다.

이 파라샤의 도덕적 분위기와 요셉의 속임, 거짓말, 형들에게 프레임 씌우는 부분에서 제 속에 불이 났습니다. 제 부모님은 제게 참된 것을 말하고, 정직 편에 서고, 나무랄 데 없으라고 가르치셨습니다. 최고 권력의 자리에서 요셉이 사용한 방법은 야곱의 아들들에게 여러 가지 불의한 결과를 초래할 수도 있었을 것입니다. 오늘날 뉴스와 오늘날 말로 악하고 부패한 사람이 씌운 누명 때문에 외국 감옥에 갇힌 동포들의 이야기를 생각해 보십시오.

여러분 중 어떤 분들은 제 말에 동의하지 않으실 것입니다. 랍비들이 “글쎄요, 그게 어떻게 잘 끝날지 보세요. 유다의 회개하는 성품을 보세요.” 말하니까요. 그렇지만, 저는 유다의 회개하는 성품은 이스라엘 땅에 기근이 들기 훨씬 전, 아우 요셉이 씌운 도둑질했다는 누명을 쓰기 훨씬 전에 형성된 것이라고 반박하고 싶습니다.

제가 이 토라 포션을 읽을 때 저는 저 유명한 1956년 영화 십계명에서 바로(파라오) 역을 맡았던 율 브리너의 목소리를 들었습니다. 이 영화는 저희 가족이 좋아하는 영화여서 집에서 즐겨 보는 영화입니다.

유다는 애굽에서 가장 힘 있는 관리 앞에 선 힘 없는 사람입니다. 그의 아우 요셉은 이 모든 과정에 철저히 통제력을 유지하고 있습니다.

이번 토라 포션은 다음 질문에 답하도록 두 인물을 대면하게 하고 있습니다:

힘과 취약함이 만날 때 의로움은 어떤 모습일까?

이 순간, 유다는 책임을 떠맡습니다. 그는 진실을 정확하고 자세하게 얘기하고 자신이 대신 볼모로 잡혀 있겠다고 합니다.

또한, 이 순간, 요셉은 관찰자입니다. 그는 그의 형들이 회개했는지 시험하지만, 결국에는 통제력을 상실합니다.

유다는 성경 전체에 걸쳐 메아리치는 이 말로 절정에 이릅니다.

“이제 주의 종으로 그 아이를 대신하여 머물러 있어 내 주의 종이 되게 하시고 그 아이는 그의 형제들과 함께 올려 보내소서” (창세기 44:33)

요셉이 들은 말은 창세기 37장의 역전입니다.

누가 요셉을 팔려고 했는지 회상해 보십시오.

“유다가 자기 형제에게 이르되 우리가 우리 동생을 죽이고 그의 피를 덮어둔들 무엇이 유익할까

자 그를 이스마엘 사람들에게 팔고 그에게 우리 손을 대지 말자 그는 우리의 동생이요 우리의 혈육이니라 하매 그의 형제들이 청종하였더라” (창세기 37:26–27)

이 장면에서 유다가 한 말은 살인을 막았고 요셉의 생명을 건졌습니다. 유다는 생명의 존엄을 인지했습니다. 그는 형제들이 막 넘으려던 도덕의 선을 긋고 돌이킬 수 없는 피 흘림의 죄를 막았습니다. 유다는 차악을 선택하고 요셉을 팔아 그가 사라지게 하자고 제안합니다.

창세기 37장에서 지적할 두 가지 진실이 있습니다:

1. 유다는 요셉을 파는 것으로 그릇되게 행동했습니다.

2. 유다는 요셉을 죽이는 것을 막는 것으로 옳게 행동했습니다.

성경은 도덕적 복잡성을 단순화시킨 범주로 단조롭게 만들지 않습니다.

살인을 막았다고 착취를 정당화하지 않습니다. 죽음을 막았다고 배신을 정당화하지 않습니다. 이 때문에 창세기 37장이 유다를 용서하는 것은 아닙니다. 그러면서 또한 그를 요셉의 생명에 무관심한 사람으로 묘사하지도 않습니다.

지금, 권력자 아우 요셉 앞에서, 유다는 자기가 베냐민을 대신하겠다고 나섭니다. 이는 어떤 전략이 아니었습니다. 이것은 희생으로 증명하는 유다의 회개입니다.

“또는 그러면 선을 이루기 위하여 악을 행하자 하지 않겠느냐 어떤 이들이 이렇게 비방하여 우리가 이런 말을 한다고 하니 그들은 정죄 받는 것이 마땅하니라” (로마서 3:8)

이 구절은 모든 윤리적 해석에 적용됩니다.

성경은 의로운 목적을 위하여 악한 방법을 쓰는 것을 결코 허용하지 않습니다.

그러므로 요셉의 이야기는 속임을 정당화하는 데에 사용되어서는 안 됩니다. 권력은 결코 경건함으로 위장되어서는 안 됩니다. 어떤 상황의 결과가 결코 사악한 수단을 정당화하지 않습니다. 요셉의 속임은 그의 마음이 바뀌면서 금방 끝났습니다. 유다의 회개가 분명해지자, 요셉은 곧바로 시험을 끝냈습니다.

“요셉이 시종하는 자들 앞에서 그 정을 억제하지 못하여 … 요셉이 큰 소리로 우니 애굽 사람에게 들리며 …” (창세기 45:1–2)

“당신들이 나를 이 곳에 팔았다고 해서 근심하지 마소서 한탄하지 마소서 하나님이 생명을 구원하시려고 나를 당신들보다 먼저 보내셨나이다” (창세기 45:5)

요셉이 그들의 죄를 너그러이 봐주는 것은 아닙니다. 그는 그것보다 하나님의 구속을 더 크게 보이게 합니다. 요셉은 나중에 이 신학을 명확히 하는데요, 그 이유는 그가 그러한 삶이 그에게 일어나던 때는 그에게 없던 이러한 시각이 생길 만큼의 세월을 겪었기 때문입니다:

“당신들은 나를 해하려 하였으나 하나님은 그것을 선으로 바꾸사 오늘과 같이 많은 백성의 생명을 구원하게 하시려 하셨나니” (창세기 50:20)

악에 대한 하나님의 주권이 악을 의로 바꾸지는 않습니다.

구속(속량)은 허가가 아닙니다.

십계명은 도덕적 경계선으로 남아 있습니다. 그러니 이 도덕적 경계선 안에서 행하도록 합시다.

“…은혜를 더하게 하려고 죄에 거하겠느냐 그럴 수 없느니라…” (로마서 6:1–2)

토라도 복음서도 거짓말하는 것이 연합을 위한 거룩이 된다거나, 조종하는 것이 평화를 위한 의가 된다거나, 결과가 좋아 보인다고 권력이 경건함이 된다고 가르치지 않습니다.

파라샤 “바이가쉬”의 맥락에서 로마서 3:8가 적용된다면, 정죄 받는 것이 마땅합니다:

“또는 그러면 선을 이루기 위하여 악을 행하자 하지 않겠느냐 어떤 이들이 이렇게 비방하여 우리가 이런 말을 한다고 하니 그들은 정죄 받는 것이 마땅하니라”

하나님의 목적은 결코 속임이나 조종을 정당화하지 않으며, 요셉의 이야기는 결코 경건함이라는 미명 하에 권력을 휘두르는 것을 봐주는 데에 사용되어서는 안 됩니다.

 엘리셰바의 남편은 네 번째 수술에서 회복 중입니다. 9월 23일에 다섯 번째 수술을 받습니다. 또한 엘리셰뱌의 왼쪽 다리와 고관절의 치유를 위해서도, 다음 주에 있을 새로운 일자리 면접을 위해서도 기도해 주십시오.

 매니는 쇠약해지고 있는 그의 아버지의 건강을 위해 기도해 주시기를 부탁합니다.

 제니는 몇 가지 의료 평가를 받을 것입니다. 현재 생활 계획과 운전 가능성에 영향을 주지 않을 최선의 결과가 나오도록 기도를 부탁했습니다.

 팻 에스(S)는 몇 차례 주사를 맞고 통증 관리가 호전되었습니다. 여러분의 기도 가운데 팻을 돌보고 있는 89세의 필립도 기억해 주십시오.

 래리가 그의 손주들을 위한 기도를 부탁합니다. 저는 손주가 있는 우리 대부분이 이 세상의 상태에 대해 우려하고 있을 것이라고 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 관용이 없고, 유혹이 만연한 상태 말입니다. 성령님께서 그들이 바른 선택을 하도록 인도해 주시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

 줄리는 단층 촬영 결과 좋은 소식을 들었고 호전되고 있다고도 합니다. 하나님을 찬양합니다. 주님께 감사드리는 것은 그분께서 선하시기 때문입니다.

 빌은 합병증을 관리할 수 있는 조직을 바꿀 수 있었고 저희는 그것에 대해 감사드립니다. 우리는 질과 빌을 위해서 치유와 힘과 위로를 구하여 기도하고 있습니다.

 알래스카의 앤지와 바브라(앤지의 어머니). 바브라는 노년 관련 통증과 불편이 있습니다. 힘 주시고 틍증이 줄도록 여러분의 기도에 이들을 올려드려 주십시오.

I have heartburn reading the Parasha portion of Vayigash this week. I will explain shortly what is causing this.

Parashat Vayigash opens with an emotionally and theologically charged moment in the Torah.

"Then Judah approached him, and said, 'Oh my lord, may your servant please speak a word in my lord's ears, and do not let your anger burn against your servant; for you are equal to Pharaoh.'" (Genesis 44:18, NASB)

The Hebrew text begins with:

וַיִּגַּשׁ אֵלָיו יְהוּדָה — Vayigash elav Yehudah, “Judah drew near.”

This is physical movement. But also, in biblical Hebrew, vayigash signals:

‣ Courageous confrontation

‣ Moral responsibility

‣ Willingness to stand before power

‣ The tenderness of a grandfather approaching a child.

Judah does not retreat. He approaches authority with truth.

Judah's opening words are deliberate:

דָּבָר בְּאָזְנֵי אֲדֹנִי

Davar b'oznei adoni — "A word in my lord's ears."

This phrase conveys respect without flattery, urgency without rebellion, truth spoken directly, not whispered deceit. Judah is not manipulating Joseph. He is appealing to conscience, not exploiting power. This sets the moral tone for the entire parashah.

The Moral tone of the parashah and Joseph's deceit, lies, and framing of his brothers is where I have heartburn. My mother and father taught me to tell the truth. To be on the side of honesty, to be above reproach. The methods used by Joseph, in his position of ultimate power, could have resulted in many unjust results for the sons of Jacob. Think of stories of fellow citizens who are sitting in jail in foreign countries because they were set up by evil and corrupt persons in todays news and word.

Some of you will disagree with me since the rabbis say, " Well, look how well it ended. Look at Judah's repentant nature.) However, I would argue that Judah's repentant nature was formed years before the famine in the land, way before being set up for theft by his brother Joseph.

(As I read this portion, I hear the voice of Yul Brener, who portrayed Pharaoh in the famous 10 Commandments movie from 1956) a family favorite movie to watch at home.

Judah stands as a powerless man before the most powerful official in Egypt. His brother Joseph maintains total control over the outcome.

The Torah places these two figures face-to-face to answer a question:

What does righteousness look like when power and vulnerability meet?

At this moment, Judah takes responsibility. He accurately recounts the truth and offers himself as a substitute.

Also, at this moment, Joseph is an observer. He tests the repentance of his brothers, but ultimately relinquishes control.

Judah reaches the climax of his speech with words that echo through all of Scripture.

"Now, therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the lad a slave to my lord, and let the lad go up with his brothers." (Genesis 44:33, NASB)

The audience with Joseph is the reversal of Genesis 37.

Recall who was going to sell Joseph.

"Judah said to his brothers, 'What profit is it for us to kill our brother and cover up his blood?

Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.' And his brothers listened to him." (Genesis 37:26–27, NASB)

In this scene, Judah's words stop a murder. Joseph's life is spared. Judah recognized the sanctity of life. He drew a moral line that his brothers were about to cross and prevented an irreversible blood guilt. Judah chooses a lesser evil, proposing to sell Joseph to make him disappear.

There are two truths to point out in Genesis 37:

1. Judah acted wrongly by selling Joseph.

2. Judah acted rightly by preventing Joseph's murder.

The Bible does not flatten moral complexity into simplistic categories.

Stopping murder does not sanctify exploitation. Preventing death does not justify betrayal. This is why Genesis 37 does not absolve Judah, but it also does not portray him as indifferent to Joseph's life.

Now, in front of his powerful brother Joseph, Judah offers himself in place of Benjamin. This was not a strategy. It was Judah's repentance proven by sacrifice.

Judah prevents the suffering of his father and brothers. He accepts the loss personally by offering himself to stay in place of his young brother Benjamin, whom Jacob loved desperately. He stands his ground and refuses to walk away. What we are witnessing here is that Judah does not begin as a righteous man - he becomes one. He finishes as a virtuous man. This is what every father would wish for his child. Jacob (Israel) must have been proud of his son.

In regard to Joseph, the Apostle Paul directly addresses the temptation to justify questionable actions by appealing to good results.

"And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), 'Let us do evil that good may come'? Their condemnation is just." (Romans 3:8, NASB)

This verse governs all ethical interpretation

The Bible never permits evil methods for righteous goals.

Therefore, Joseph's story must not be used to justify deception. Power must never be disguised as piety. An outcome of a situation never sanctifies ungodly means. Joseph's deception comes to an end quickly when his heart is changed. Once Judah's repentance is evident, Joseph immediately ends the test.

"Then Joseph could not control himself before all those who stood by him… and he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it." (Genesis 45:1–2, NASB)

"Now do not be grieved or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life." (Genesis 45:5, NASB)

Joseph does not excuse their sin. He magnifies God's redemption over it. Joseph later clarifies the theology because he has the years that have passed to set a perspective which he did not have at the time that life was happening to him:

"You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive." (Genesis 50:20, NASB)

God's sovereignty over evil does not transform evil into righteousness.

Redemption is not permission.

The Ten Commandments remain the ethical boundary. So let's walk within this moral boundary.

"Shall we continue in sin so that grace may increase? May it never be!" (Romans 6:1–2, NASB)

Neither Torah nor the Gospel teaches that lying becomes holy for unity, manipulation becomes righteousness for peace, or power becomes godly when results look good.

Within the context of Parashat Vayigash, governed by Romans 3:8, Condemnation is deserved.

"And why not say (just as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), 'Let's do evil that good may come of it"?

God's purposes never justify deception or manipulation, and Joseph's story must never be used to excuse power exercised under the disguise of godliness.

Update on Dad. Monday and Tuesday were days filled with tests and an overnight hospital stay for Dad (Joseph) on Shabbat in the synagogue. He felt weak, like he was going to faint ( a repeat of what happened in Victoria, Brazil, a couple of weeks back). He had trouble with his vision but continued teaching at Roeh Israel in Jerusalem. Also, during the weekend, he experienced confusion about where he was, which was also a repeat of similar episodes in Brazil over the last few weeks. Monday, he visited his primary doctor, who he shared this information with, and he sent him to the hospital for tests. He had a heart test, a CT Scan, a Meningitis test, and an MRI of the brain. All the tests except the heart test did not show any abnormalities. We don't have an explanation for the fainting and confusion episodes that he has been experiencing in the last month. Let’s pray for God’s revelation in the face of these obstacles that many aging people face. - Barry

 Ilana Hanhijärvi is a dear sister who is 99 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurki.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Miriam a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

 Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

 Ray H. is having a similar health issue like Marcia Shulam did where id blood pressure drops when we stands up.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.

 I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.

 Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 Bill has been able to change the regiment where the side effects are manageable and we are thankful for that. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill and Bill.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
