Our Torah portion starts with Joseph's dreams, which will elevate him above his brothers and even above his whole family. Jacob ignores Joseph's dreams, and the brothers become more and more aggressive toward him with no intention of letting him live and bringing them down. Jacob, in a way, encouraged Joseph and his dreams and even made a special, expensive garment of imported cloth for Joseph. This gave a back wind to spread those megalomaniac dreams of Joseph and made his brothers want to get away from Joseph, and developed an allergic reaction to Joseph's attitude. The situation was so serious that even physically getting Joseph out of their way was considered by some of the brothers, primarily Judah. At first, the brothers were plotting to kill their brother Joseph; the hate was so deep that even murder was a consideration. The Biblical text is not edited or cleaned up. It portrays the good, the bad, and the ugly in our human nature, for brothers to develop such a hate and an allergic relationship to their younger brother based on envy and hate for the way that the father of all of them was showing partiality to their younger brother. I would love to see in the Bible the revelation of the complete picture of the history of the nation of Israel from beginning to end. Unfortunately, the prophets offer only brief and unclear hints. In the prophets and their prophecies, I find great comfort and encouragement in reading the prophecies of the Bible. But like in our reading of the Torah portion for this Shabbat, there is no clear prophetic hint of what the future of Joseph's relationship to his brothers will be. God in this portion is like in the book of Esther, Deus Ex Machina. God acts behind the scenes. He is there but essentially invisible. The savior of the brothers is in the picture, but not clearly visible. The interesting part of this Torah portion is that God has to put everyone into the school of hard knocks and put them all, including Joseph himself, in the examination even more than once. The most dramatic examination of Joseph and his integrity is the affair of Potiphar's wife falling in lust with Joseph and desiring to sleep with and have sex with this Hebrew enslaved person. She plotted and planned the stage for Joseph to come to her, and she would tempt him to sleep with her in her husband's bed. In this great test of integrity and honesty, Joseph passes with honors and doesn't fall into the trap that the women set up for him. With all the victories of Joseph over the lust of Potiphar's wife, he still ends up in prison, and there, too, Joseph rises above the temptation and even in the Egyptian jail rises above the crowds and keeps his integrity. The most interesting things for me in all the Bible are the way God sets up the cards with complete freedom of action given to the men and women on the stage of history, and yet in the end, everything turns out just as it should be. It is always the right person who wins, and the right person who suffers, but in the end, he is rewarded for his suffering by a great place and opportunity to demonstrate God's righteousness. It is encouraging to read in the Bible that the righteous always win and the evil and dishonest always fall into the pit. Looking close up, I always see the injustice that is done to the righteous one of God, the one that God chooses to be the leader and the messenger, who almost always suffers on the way to glory. The rest of humanity doesn't seem to understand that poor Joseph, Samson, King David himself, and Jesus himself went through the horrible death on the cross to be King of the Jews and the Messiah. For this reason, the similarity between Joseph and Yeshua the Messiah has been seen as a parallel story to the messianic narrative. The suffering, hated, taken advantage of, misunderstood person in the final story, the suffering servant becomes king and ruler of all history and humanity, and king of the Jews. In a way, the whole story of Joseph is a dress rehearsal of the story of Yeshua. The story of David is a prequel to both the story of Joseph and another paradigm, in place of the Egyptian prince Moses, who chose justice and righteousness and a future as a desert prince over a rebellious and appreciating nation being dragged through the Sinai desert, never to enter the promised land. It seems like God is the master user of great talent and wasting this great talent on a nation that is constantly repeating the same pattern – those who receive the most from God's grace and from the leaders that are always so dedicated and masterfully save the nation from thirst and hunger and the enemy at the door and the corruption in the inner circle and in the end does not get to cross the Jordan river into the land that he worked so hard and received so much abuse from that same nation. Joseph and Moses share the same paradigm of hard work and dedication to the cause, and obedience to the Lord, and in the end, a great disappointment, and the reward is not physically visible. The lesson of our Parasha is the same lesson that most of the men of God have experienced in their lives. I truly believe that God, in his wisdom, planned history this way for several reasons: 1) So that no one sees leadership of God's people as an opportunity to gain something physical, tangible, and marketable. 2) The great men of God in the Bible, almost without exception, reserve their rewards for heaven and never protest about it verbally or by their attitude. We also all were sick this week. I (Barry) have had the Noro virus or food poisoning since Wed I have had the runs. Both Dad and Beth are on antibiotics for a sinus infection. Dad had a prostate checkup and a pet scan. The prostate situation will require surgery its 5x larger than it should be. The PET results are a mixed bag with some lymph notes growing and others shrinking. His cancer is in a monitor situation and the next test will be in April 2026. Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.
I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.
Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.
Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.
Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.
Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
Bill experience from the treatments is not so pleasant. Please pray that the treatment is effective and that the side effects reduce over time. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill.
Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
