이번 안식일 토라 포션은 톨돝, 창세기 25:19-28:9입니다. 이 토라 포션의 이름 톨돝은 히브리어로 “계보, 족보” 혹은 “역사”라는 뜻이 될 수 있습니다. 신약성경도 마태복음이 이와 똑같은 단어로 시작됩니다:

“아브라함과 다윗의 자손 예수 그리스도의 계보라”

이번 안식일 토라 포션은 다음 말씀으로 시작됩니다:

“아브라함의 아들 이삭의 족보는 이러하니라 아브라함이 이삭을 낳았고 이삭은 사십 세에 리브가를 맞이하여 아내를 삼았으니 리브가는 밧단 아람의 아람 족속 중 브두엘의 딸이요 아람 족속 중 라반의 누이였더라” (창세기 25:19-20)

제가 창세기 25장의 이 말씀을 읽을 때 드는 의문은 이것입니다: 주님, 왜 이미 40세나 되었고 아직 결혼하지 않은 남자의 족보를 적으면서 시작하시나요? 그의 아버지 아브라함은 그의 친척 중에서 이삭의 신부를 구하기 위해 시리아 북부까지 금과 은과 선물을 가득 실은 열두어 낙타와 함께 그의 노종을 보내야 했습니다. 이삭은 40세로, 결혼한 적이 없습니다. 아브라함은 연로해지고 있고 그의 아내 사라는 이미 죽었습니다. 이삭은 필시 20대 초반인 아가씨와 첫 결혼을 할 참입니다.

사라는 당시 세 살인 이삭과 그보다 열세 살이 더 많은 이스마엘 사이에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지를 보았던 것일까요? 저는 전에 이미 “놀리다”라는 단어가 명백히 성적 의미가 있다는 것을 쓴 적이 있습니다. 여러분은 창세기 26:8에서 같은 단어를 보실 수 있습니다. 그러나 번역은 불행하게도 다음과 같이 모든 종류의 정치적 단어를 대신하고 있습니다:

“이삭이 그 아내 리브가를 껴안은 것을 블레셋 왕 아비멜렉이 창으로 내다본지라”

또 다른 번역본(뉴어메리칸스탠다드)는 이렇게 번역되어 있습니다:

“보라, 이삭이 그의 아내 리브가와 희롱하고 있었다.”

이 구절을 가장 이상하게 번역한 번역본 중 하나는 다비 번역본입니다:

이 단어는 또 요셉과 보디발의 아내 사건에서도 사용되었습니다. 보디발의 아내는 요셉과 섹스를 하고 싶어했으나 요셉이 거절하자 집안 종들을 불러 히브리어의 같은 단어로 요셉이 그녀와 섹스를 하려 했다고 그를 참소했습니다.

창세기 39:14-17:

“그 여인의 집 사람들을 불러서 그들에게 이르되 보라 주인이 히브리 사람을 우리에게 데려다가 우리를 희롱하게 하는도다 그가 나와 동침하고자 내게로 들어오므로 내가 크게 소리 질렀더니 그가 나의 소리 질러 부름을 듣고 그의 옷을 내게 버려두고 도망하여 나갔느니라 하고 그의 옷을 곁에 두고 자기 주인이 집으로 돌아오기를 기다려 이 말로 그에게 말하여 이르되 당신이 우리에게 데려온 히브리 종이 나를 희롱하려고 내게로 들어왔으므로”

우리가 성경을 읽으면, 성경 서사 속 대부분의 가족이 스캔들과 문제가 있다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 저는 다음과 같은 질문을 자문해야 할 것 같습니다: 성경 속 어떤 가족이 그 가족 안에 중대한 이슈가 없었는가? 저는 성경 전체에서 가족 안에 적어도 어떤 문제도 없는 가족을 단 하나라도 생각해 낼 수 없었습니다.

성경의 첫 가족 아담과 이브는 에덴 동산 밖에서의 일상이 그들의 아들 중 한 명이 피를 나눈 다른 형제에 의해 살해되는 것으로 시작됩니다. 바로 거기에 성경의 첫 피흘림이 있습니다. 부모 둘 다를 온 우주의 창조주, 전능하신 하나님께서 직접 빚으신 첫 가족 안에서 일어난 피흘림입니다. 이것은 제게 아주 정신이 번쩍 들게 하는 생각입니다. 다 차지 않은 두 달 전에 저는 제 사랑하는 아내 마르시아를 장례 지냈습니다. 마르시아는 열세 살 때 이후로 당뇨병으로 약했지만 59년 동안 멋진 결혼생활을 했습니다. 이 59년의 결혼생활 동안 저희는 딱 한 번 의료 문제로 심각하고 강력한 말싸움을 했습니다. “야곱이 브엘세바에서 떠나 하란으로 향하여 가더니 한 곳에 이르러는 해가 진지라 거기서 유숙하려고 그 곳의 한 돌을 가져다가 베개로 삼고 거기 누워 자더니 꿈에 본즉 사닥다리가 땅 위에 서 있는데 그 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿았고 또 본즉 하나님의 사자들이 그 위에서 오르락내리락 하고 또 본즉 여호와께서 그 위에 서서 이르시되 나는 여호와니 너의 조부 아브라함의 하나님이요 이삭의 하나님이라 네가 누워 있는 땅을 내가 너와 네 자손에게 주리니 네 자손이 땅의 티끌 같이 되어 네가 서쪽과 동쪽과 북쪽과 남쪽으로 퍼져나갈지며 땅의 모든 족속이 너와 네 자손으로 말미암아 복을 받으리라 내가 너와 함께 있어 네가 어디로 가든지 너를 지키며 너를 이끌어 이 땅으로 돌아오게 할지라 내가 네게 허락한 것을 다 이루기까지 너를 떠나지 아니하리라 하신지라” (창세기 28:10-15)

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 22 November, 2025

The Torah Readings for next Shabbat are from Toldot, Genesis 25:19-28:9. The name of this Torah portion is Toldot, which in Hebrew can mean "genealogy" or "history." The New Testament begins with this same word in the book of Matthew:

"The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:"

Our reading on Shabbat starts with the following words:

"This is the genealogy of Isaac, Abraham's son. Abraham begot Isaac. Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian." (Genesis 25:19-20)

My question when I read these verses from Genesis 25 is this: Why do you start writing a genealogy for a man who is already 40 years old and still not married? His father, Abraham, had to send his old servant way up to Northern Syria to find him a bride from his family with a dozen camels full of gold and silver and gifts. Isaac is 40, and he has never been married. Abraham is getting old, and Sarah, his wife, is dead already. Isaac is getting married for the first time in his life, with a young woman who is most probably in her early 20s.

I have to take you back to Genesis 21:9:

"And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing. 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, "Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac." 11 And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham's sight because of his son."

What did Sarah see happening between Ishmael, who was already older than 13 years old, and Isaac, who was 3 years old at that time? I have already written earlier that the word "scoffing" in the English Bible has a clear sexual context. You can see this in Genesis 26:8, the very same word in Hebrew, but the English translations unfortunately substituted all kinds of political words like:

"Abimelech saw Abraham caressing his wife."

The New American Standard translation has it:

"behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah, his wife."

One of the strangest translations of this verse is from the Darby Translation:

"Abimelech the king of the Philistines looked out of the window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was dallying with Rebecca his wife."

The same word is also used in the case of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, who wanted Joseph to have sex with her, and when he refused, she called her servants from the house and accused Joseph of having sex with her, with the very same word in the Hebrew.

Genesis 39:14:

"that she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he has brought in a Hebrew man to us, to mock us: he came in to me, to lie with me; and I cried with a loud voice; 15 and it came to pass when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went out. And she laid his garment by her until his lord came home. And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, "The Hebrew bondman that thou hast brought to us came into me to mock me."

The events of Isaac's late marriage. We need to understand what was really going on in this fascinating narrative. When you think about this, you begin to understand the problems that this family of Isaac and Rebecca had, even with their children Esau and Jacob. These kids grew up in a family with Isaac as a very passive father and a very determined mother who was younger than her old husband by 22 years. Isaac is portrayed in the book of Genesis as a passive older man who is only interested in good food and being left alone by his wife and children.

Another important story in the Parasha is the sibling rivalry between Rebecca and Isaac's sons, Esau and Jacob. These twins, born to Rebecca, start their lives already before they come out of their mother's womb in a battle. This same battle is one of the root causes of the problems in the Middle East, lasting until this very day.

Harry Belafonte, the famous singer, sang a song with these words:

"Whoa is me there is a scandal in my family."

We find out when we read the Bible that most of the families staring in the biblical narrative have scandals and problems in their families. I have to ask myself the following question: What family in the Bible didn't have significant issues in their family? I can't think of even one family in the whole Biblical narrative that didn't have at least some problems in the family.

The first family in the Bible, Adam and Eve, started their everyday life outside the Garden of Eden with the murder of one of their sons by his blood brother. Right there is the first bloodshed in the Bible, taking place in the first family where both father and mother were handcrafted personally by the almighty God, the Creator of the whole world; it is for me a very sobering idea. Just less than two months ago, I buried my dear wife, Marcia, after 59 years of wonderful marriage, even though Marcia was a fragile diabetic on insulin since her 13th year of age. In these 59 years of a good marriage, we have only had one serious, strong discussion that was related to medical issues. (Of course, my advice to every married man who wants a good marriage is to learn this pair of words: "Yes, Dear!")

The next important event in this week's Torah portion is from chapter 28:10:

"Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. And behold, the LORD stood above it and said: "I am the LORD God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. Also, your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you." (Genesis 28:10-15 NKJV)

Now, this text that has so many different aspects that arouse my imagination is most often misunderstood. First of all, it is a theatrical text with a dramatic consequence. Jacob is a fugitive! He is running away from home because his older brother, Esau, wants to kill him. After all, Jacob essentially deceived his brother with sharp and very modern marketing tactics. He managed to buy his brother's inheritance for a bowl of red bean soup. So, Rebecca, Jacob, and Esau's mother sent Jacob to her family in northern Syria. Jacob leaves Beer Sheba and arrives a little north of Jerusalem at Beth-El, which means "The house of God!"

Night comes, and Jacob is fatigued from the long walk from Beer Sheba to Jerusalem, then a little north to Beth-El. He doesn't look for Hilton or a cheap hotel; he goes to a field and finds a spot, he is thirsty and he moves the stone that was covering the well and gets a drink, and gets a stone for a pillow and goes to sleep. In his sleep, he has a dream. The dream that Jacob sees is a ladder stretched from heaven to earth, and there are angels of the Lord coming down and going up.

The significance of the detail of this story is of great importance. The fact that Jacob walked from Beer Sheba to Beth-El and he alone can move the stone that covered the mouth of the well shows that he is a strong person. We will see this same action further on in the story when Jacob arrives in Syria and comes to the well near his uncle's place in Syria. He moves another stone from another well, and this action impresses a young, beautiful lady who then becomes his favorite wife, Rachel.

What is the meaning of this dream that Jacob sees in Beth El, angels that are going up the ladder, and others descending from heaven to Earth? In the biblical narrative of Genesis, Jacob's dream of the ladder reaching from earth to heaven serves as theological imagery that has sparked diverse interpretations throughout history.

Firstly, the imagery of angels ascending and descending the ladder can be understood in several ways. One interpretation suggests that the angels going up represent prayers, aspirations, and the struggles of humanity reaching towards God. This movement symbolizes the longing and desire to connect with the divine, indicating that human efforts are not in vain. The ascent of the angels also signifies the idea of enlightenment and spiritual growth, where each upward movement is a step toward higher understanding and communion with God.

Conversely, the angels descending can be seen as God's response to human needs, God's presence, and blessings being poured out upon humanity. This can be interpreted to mean that while humanity reaches out to God, God is equally responsive, sending angels as messengers of hope, guidance, and protection.

This dual movement indicates a reciprocal relationship between God and humanity, where each party is engaged in a dialogue of communication, both reaching towards and reaching down to one another.

The dream can also be perceived as a foreshadowing of divine revelation and intervention. In the context of Jacob's life, it signifies that God is aware of his struggles and fears as he flees from Esau. The ladder stands as a metaphor for the accessibility of God. The 21st century is marked by uncertainty, conflict, and spiritual searching, and this dream not only emphasizes that God is ever-present but also that communication with Him is achievable, no matter how distant one may feel.

For Jews, this dream symbolizes the continuity of the covenant between God and His chosen people. It signifies God's promise to Jacob, reassuring him of divine protection and guidance, themes that remain crucial in Jewish thought today.

For Christians, Jacob's dream resonates with the concept of Christ as the ultimate connection to heaven. The New Testament reflects on this ladder imagery, with Jesus referencing John 1:51, where He states,

"You will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."

Yeshua identifies himself with Jacob and references that God the Father is at his service and protection, like God was for Jacob, who was running from fear that his brother would kill him. This deepens the interpretation of the dream, suggesting that Jesus embodies the divine bridge between heaven and earth, fulfilling the need for a mediator in spiritual matters.

Jacob's dream, as recounted in the Book of Genesis (Genesis 28:10-17), is one of the most significant narratives in the Hebrew Bible, rich with layers of meaning and interpretation. Classical Jewish rabbinical interpretations provide insight into the character of Jacob and also into broader themes relevant to the Jewish experience.

A notable interpretation from the Talmud, specifically in Berakhot 55a, suggests that the ladder symbolizes the connection between the spiritual and the earthly realms—akin to the dual nature of the Jewish people, who are expected to be both a light unto the nations and rooted in the physical world. This interpretation aligns with the calling of Israel to be a moral compass, suggesting that the actions of the Jewish people on earth have a divine significance that affects the rest of humanity and points to the relationship of God's awareness of his servants and their protection. The end of this story is that Jacob responded to God's revelation with an oath to come back and build a place of worship and a commitment to faithfulness to the God who sent his angels to protect and care for the fugitive Jacob to accompany him safely north and bring him back to the land given to Abraham and his seed as an everlasting inheritance.

Another interpretation by Rashi, the preeminent medieval Jewish commentator, focuses on the angels. He notes that the angels ascending represent Jacob's past—his father Isaac's protection and the legacy of the patriarchs—while those descending signify the challenges ahead, such as exile and persecution. This duality reflects the historical experience of the Jewish people, resonating with the reality of Israel today, which faces numerous challenges on the global stage yet continues to thrive and develop its national identity.

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has also commented on Jacob's dream, highlighting the theme of continuity and responsibility. Jacob's ladder can be seen as a metaphor for the aspirations of the Jewish people and their ongoing covenant with God. In light of Israel's current geopolitical challenges, this interpretation emphasizes the responsibility placed upon the State of Israel to forge a path towards peace and justice, acknowledging the historical complexities and moral imperatives involved.

The dream's setting at Bethel, a place that would later become significant in Jewish history, underscores the idea of sacred space and the notion of Israel as a chosen land. In a modern context, this raises questions about territorial disputes, the sanctity of land, and the historical claims associated with it. The various interpretations remind us that Israel's existence is woven into a rich tapestry of historical significance and moral responsibility.

Additionally, modern rabbinic thought continues to explore themes of resilience and hope, reflecting Jacob's transition from a vulnerable state to one of strength and leadership. This mirrors the journey of Israel, which has transformed from a fledgling state in 1948 to a robust nation that has achieved remarkable technological and cultural advancements.

Yet, the dream cautions against complacency. Just as Jacob was instructed to be aware of the divine presence, Israel must remain cognizant of its ethical obligations to all its inhabitants and strive for a society that embodies justice and compassion.

These interpretations resonate deeply with Israel's situation today, reminding the nation of its historical duties while inspiring a vision of hope, resilience, and ethical leadership in an increasingly complex world. The dream compels Israel to bridge the spiritual and the secular, shaping its identity as a beacon of morality amid contemporary challenges.

 Cynthia M asked that you for praying for her health. She has neutropenia and chronic asthma and I has been undergoing biological treatment with injections every two weeks since 2021 so I ask you to pray for better results and better health conditions as the symptoms, respiratory infections, medications and injections make me very tired every day.

 Mass has lost his wife and has small children. Please pray for Mass a this children as he navigates this major change in his life and the Childrens life. May God bless him with direction.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 new Ronnie needs your prayers he is in the hospital in Nashville and his sister Pat is concerned for him and believes in the power of prayers.

 Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

 Ray H. is having a similar health issue like Marcia Shulam did where id blood pressure drops when we stands up.

 Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.

 Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.

 Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.

 Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.

 I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.

 Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.

 Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.

 Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.

 Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.

 Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.

 update Bill experience from the treatments is not so pleasant. Please pray that the treatment is effective and that the side effects reduce over time. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana is home now. her health is in a decline like Marcia. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
