by Joseph Shulam The Torah portion and the portion from the prophets for this upcoming Shabbat is called THE LIFE OF SARA – the wife of Abraham, the mother of Isaac. Chayei Sarah (The Life of Sarah), the reading is from Genesis 23:1-25:18. From the Prophets, the Haftarah is read from 1 Kings 1:1-31. From the New Testament, we will read from the Gospel of John 4:3-14. "The life of Sarah" means the death of Sarah—the connection and the reasons why Jewish tradition has put these three texts together to be read in every synagogue in the world on this Shabbat are a mystery to me. If I had to look for a common thread between these at first glance, Genesis 23–25:18, 1 Kings 1:1-31, and John 4:3-14, the connection seems distant: one speaks of the death of Sarah and the next generation of Abraham's family; one of David's last days and Solomon's succession; one of Yeshua meeting the Samaritan woman at Jacob's well. But when you read them together as a single theological tapestry, powerful patterns emerge — all centered on transition, covenantal continuity, and life-giving water. The Pattern that ties all three readings together is the motive of a Well: Every "well scene" in Scripture symbolizes a divine encounter that renews life and covenant. The water motif ties physical survival (Sarah's burial plot, David's frailty, Samaritan thirst) to spiritual renewal. The only thread that puts these three texts together. • In Genesis 24, Isaac's servant meets Rebekah at a well; there, covenant love and the next generation begin. • In 1 Kings 1, although no literal well appears, Abishag of Shunem ministers to David—again a young woman caring for an aged patriarch, a human vessel of renewal is like a well of fresh water for an old king who is called and dry and disconnected from the events around him – So Abishag from Shunem is there sleeping next to David naked trying to keep him warm and probably remind him or torture him with his memories of earlier years when he was younger and would have enjoyed a beautiful young woman sleeping next to him. Abishag is like a well of fresh water that reminds and restores the old king David's memories of a fresh well of clear water. In John 4, at another well, Yeshua meets a woman from a mixed and wounded people; new covenant life begins among the nations. The need in Abraham's family to send someone all the way to northern Syria to find a wife for Isaac, his son, is a story that demands that the CIA discover why this was so important and so strange. Not only does Eliezer, Abraham's old servant, have to go far to find Isaac's wife, but he also has to take with him a whole caravan of camels full of precious gifts of gold and silver. From the start of this story, everything around this mission of Abraham's servant going to look for a wife so far makes me suspicious that something is wrong with Isaac. He is already 40 years old, not married, has no children, and will inherit the great inheritance that God gave to Abraham already in Genesis chapter 12, the land and the promise of being a blessing to all the nations of the world. Something doesn't smell good on the hills of Judea. I remember the text from Genesis: "And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing." I have written in the past about the reason that Sarah insisted that Abraham kick Hagar and Ishmael out of her home was Ishmael, who was also Abraham's son and the son that would have inherited Abraham if Isaac had not been born. When Isaac was born by divine help and revelation, Ishmael lost his inheritance of Abraham's gifts and promises from God Himself. (Genesis 21:9 NKJV) The reason Sarah turned 180 degrees toward Hagar and Ishmael was that she saw Ishmael sexually abusing Isaac (The word translated "scoffing" in Genesis 21:9 is a sexual word that appears three times in the book of Genesis.) (One translation is scoffing, and the other is fondling. Both of these words in the Bible have a clear sexual connotation.) “When some time had passed, Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looking out of the window, saw Isaac scoffing at his wife, Rebekah. (Genesis 26:8) “She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me." But he left his garment in her hand and fled and ran outside. And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, "See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. (Genesis 39:12-14 NKJV) What is also interesting is that very few people have paid attention to the fact that, since chapter 21 of Genesis and Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son, Isaac, on the mountain, there is no communication or connection between Abraham and God. The Jewish Rabbis in the 5th Century paid attention to this fact, and of course, they asked why God cut Abraham off from communication? The reasons that the Rabbis gave are this: in chapter 18 of Genesis, Abraham argues like a carpetbagger with God in order to save the city of Sodom, and Lot, his family member, and his family. When God commanded Abraham to take his son and sacrifice him, Abraham said nothing to his wife, Sarah said nothing to his servants, and the most serious thing is that he didn't argue with God about the death of Isaac and his sacrifice. Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only real heir of the promises that God gave him in chapter 12, a universal promise of top importance that Isaac, his son, was supposed to carry them through, and Abraham says nothing to God, asks no question, claims no claim. Nothing at all, silence! For this reason, God stops communicating with Abraham until after the death of Sarah, his wife. The second motif of these three readings is that the three women in the texts are agents of continuity and faithfulness. • Sarah and Rebekah safeguard the Abrahamic promise. • Bath-Sheba ensures Solomon's succession and keeps the Dravidic covenant alive. • The Samaritan woman at the well in Shechem becomes the first evangelist to her town, spreading the news of the Messiah. Each of the three stories shows a woman preserving or proclaiming God's work when the male heroes are near death or depletion. Their courage and faith carry forward the covenant. In summary and conclusion, God often uses women as a catalyst to clarify and to enhance the revelation and confirm God's presence in a man's life. When you look and consider the Biblical narratives and God's relationship with the man of God, there is most often a woman in the picture; she is the litmus paper and the confirmation for the man of God to step out into the vast cloud of faith that seems insecure and questionable. I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.

Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.

Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
update Bill experience from the treatments is not so pleasant. Please pray that the treatment is effective and that the side effects reduce over time. We are praying for healing and strength and comfort for Jill.
