2025년 5월 17일 안식일 토라 포션은 에모르 - 레위기 21:1-24:23입니다.

선지서에서 읽는 부분(하프타라)은 에스겔 44:15-31입니다.

복음서에서는 마태복음 26:59-66을 읽을 것입니다.

저는 매주 안식일 전 세계 모든 회당에서 읽는 전통적인 토라 및 선지서 포션에서 모은 이들 가르침에서는 좀처럼 하지 않는 것을 할 것입니다. 이 관습은 예슈아 전까지 거슬러 올라가는데요, 유대인이 70년 동안의 바벨론 유수에서 돌아온 이후 에스라와 느헤미야와 함께 시작되었습니다. 우리는 느헤미야 8장을 읽다보면 토라와 선지서 말씀을 읽는 이 관습이 시작되는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 매주 안식일에 하나님의 말씀을 읽기 시작한 것을 보여주는 본문입니다.

“이스라엘 자손이 자기들의 성읍에 거주하였더니 일곱째 달에 이르러 모든 백성이 일제히 수문 앞 광장에 모여 학사 에스라에게 여호와께서 이스라엘에게 명령하신 모세의 율법책을 가져오기를 청하매 일곱째 달 초하루에 제사장 에스라가 율법책을 가지고 회중 앞 곧 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에 이르러 수문 앞 광장에서 새벽부터 정오까지 남자나 여자나 알아들을 만한 모든 사람 앞에서 읽으매 뭇 백성이 그 율법책에 귀를 기울였는데” (느헤미야 8:1-3)

이것이 이 관습의 시작, 사도행전 15장에서 사도들이 예슈아의 유대인 제자들과 이방인 제자들 모두에게 매주 안식일에 말씀을 읽으라는 명령의 시작입니다.

이제 이번 안식일 전 세계 모든 회당에서 읽을 토라 포션으로 넘어가겠습니다. 저는 예슈아께서 베들레헴에서 태어나시기 수백 년 전부터 시작된 이 고대 관습을 회복시킨 몇몇 규범적인 개신교 교회들의 예를 알고 있습니다.

관련 선지서 본문과 신약성경 본문을 참조하면서 레위기 21:1-24:23의 실제적인 면을 좀 더 면밀히 탐구해 보도록 합시다.

1. 거룩은 이번 안식일 토라 포션의 명령입니다. 토라가 거룩에 대해 말하는 첫 번째 것은 거룩에는 언제나 희생이 필요하다는 것입니다. 오늘날 사람들은 “거룩”의 의미를 좀처럼 알지 못합니다. 가톨릭교회와 그리스 정교회 같은 고 교회들과 일부 서구 개신 교회들은 “거룩”이라는 개념을 정의 내리기 힘든 것, 설명할 수 없는 것, 예슈아의 제자들인 우리의 일상 생활과 동떨어진 것으로 치부했습니다. 거룩은 신비하고 우리의 세속적인 일상 생활과는 동떨어진 것이라고 말입니다.

2. 이번 안식일 레위기 토라 포션에서 우리 모두에게 하시는 하나님의 명령은 권고가 아닌 명령으로서 삶의 신성한 본질을 명하고 틀을 짜고 있습니다. 레위기는 사람들에게 거룩하라고 촉구합니다. 레위기 20:26 - “너희는 나에게 거룩할지어다 이는 나 여호와가 거룩하고 …”

3. 선지서 포션에서 우리는 유대인 회당과 많은 교회에서 부르는 여러 기독교 찬송가와 한 유대인 찬송가에도 사용되고 있는 이 문구를 볼 수 있습니다: 이사야 6:3 - “거룩하다 거룩하다 거룩하다 만군의 여호와여 그의 영광이 온 땅에 충만하도다”

4. 신약성경에서는 레위기의 이 명령을 훨씬 더 강력하고 필수적으로 만드는 이 원리를 토라와 선지서에서 만큼 강조하고 있지 않습니다. 베드로전서 1:15 - “오직 너희를 부르신 거룩한 이처럼 너희도 모든 행실에 거룩한 자가 되라”를 읽어보십시오.

5. 이 방안에 있는 큰 코끼리는 간단하지만 거친 한 단어 “어떻게?”로 요약됩니다! 복음주의 교회들은 이 중요한 질문 “어떻게?”를 거의 묻지 않습니다.

6. 그것은 심오하고 필수적인 질문입니다. 레위기, 이사야, 베드로전서 같은 고대 본문에 나오는 하나님의 명령을 실질적으로 이행하기 위해 애쓰는 것은 정말 도전적이라고 느껴질 수 있습니다. 특히 복잡하고 종종 모순되는 세계에서 삶을 헤쳐 나가는 우리에게는 더욱 그럴 수 있습니다. 개개인이 우애에 있어서, 심지어 원수에 대해서조차 거룩, 정직, 긍휼이라는 이러한 가치를 구현할 수 있는 유용한 단계는 이렇습니다.

여러분을 거룩하게, 여러분 주위 세계와 다르게 만들 실질적인 행동입니다:

1. 여러분이 아침에 눈을 뜨는 순간부터 베개에 머리를 대고 잠드는 순간까지 여러분을 둘러싼 이 세상의 “통상적인” 사회 체계 및 관습과 다르기로 뜻하고 애쓰는 것은 여러분 삶 가운데 모든 긍정적 성취의 선행조건입니다. 여러분이 다른 사람들이 여러분을 어떻게 볼까 염려한다면, 여러분은 결코 하나님을 위해 거룩하고 다르기로 한 결심과 힘이 없을 것입니다.

2. 여러분에게 가까운 사람들에게서 여러분과 같이 여러분을 둘러싼 환경의 문화와 관습과 다르고자 뜻하는 사람들의 공동체와 교제권을 찾거나 만드십시오.

홀로 “거룩”해지는 것은 여러분 주위 세계와 달라지는 것입니다. 여러분은 여러분처럼 달라지고 각자의 삶을 이끄는 다른 가치를 가지고자 하는 사람들이 필요합니다. 함께 함은 공유되는 의무입니다: 약하고 여러분의 도움이 필요한 사람들을 옮길 들것을 지기 위해 여러분의 어깨를 내어주는 것, 여러분의 공동체와 함께 하는 것, 단란한 공동체의 일원이 되는 것. 이 때문에 하나님께서는 우리에게 여호와의 절기를 주셨습니다. 레위기 23:2 - “… 이것이 나의 절기들이니 너희가 성회로 공포할 여호와의 절기들이니라”

전 세계 예슈아의 제자들이 다르기로, 거룩하기로 뜻한다면, 스가랴 8:23의 예언이 이루어질 것입니다. 우리의 세상은 바뀔 것이고 우리 메시아 예슈아의 재림에 준비될 것입니다. 유대인과 이방인과 아랍인과 모든 민족과 모든 인종의 구주께서 거룩하실 것입니다.

하나님의 뜻이라면, 우리가 곧, 우리 시대에 보기를 기대하고 있는 미래는 이렇습니다. - “그 날에는 말이 다른 이방 백성 열 명이 유다 사람 하나의 옷자락을 잡을 것이라 곧 잡고 말하기를 하나님이 너희와 함께 하심을 들었나니 우리가 너희와 함께 가려 하노라 하리라” (스가랴 8:23)

신약성경 말씀에서는, 사도행전 2:42 - “그들이 사도의 가르침을 받아 서로 교제하고 떡을 떼며 오로지 기도하기를 힘쓰니라”

이러한 행동들은 달라지는 데에 있어서, 심지어 우리 주변 세상 사람들의 눈에 이상하기까지 할 정도로 달라지는 데에 있어서 꼭 필요한 것입니다. 우리가 다른 쪽 뺨을 돌려대거나, 오리를 더 가거나, 속옷을 가지고자 하는 자에게 겉옷까지 내어준다면, 어리석은 바보로 보일 수 있을 것입니다.

레위기 19:18 - “원수를 갚지 말며 동포를 원망하지 말며 네 이웃 사랑하기를 네 자신과 같이 사랑하라 나는 여호와이니라”

아모스 5:24 - “오직 정의를 물 같이, 공의를 마르지 않는 강 같이 흐르게 할지어다”

신약성경에서는, 마태복음 25:40 - “임금이 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 여기 내 형제 중에 지극히 작은 자 하나에게 한 것이 곧 내게 한 것이니라 하시고”

공경과 예우는 달라지는 데에 있어서 필수 요소입니다.

레위기 22:32 - “너희는 내 성호를 속되게 하지 말라 나는 이스라엘 자손 중에서 거룩하게 함을 받을 것이니라 나는 너희를 거룩하게 하는 여호와요”

선지서에서는, 말라기 1:6 - “… 아들은 그 아버지를, 종은 그 주인을 공경하나니 내가 아버지일진대 나를 공경함이 어디 있느냐 …”

빌립보서 2:3 - “아무 일에든지 다툼이나 허영으로 하지 말고 오직 겸손한 마음으로 각각 자기보다 남을 낫게 여기고”

물론, 거룩한 삶을 산다는 것에는 무엇보다 도덕적이고 정직함, 서로에게 사랑 가운데 진리를 말함, 예레미야 선지자가 우리에게 말한 바와 같은 것이 포함됩니다:

예레미야 9:24 - “자랑하는 자는 이것으로 자랑할지니 곧 명철하여 나를 아는 것과 나 여호와는 사랑과 정의와 공의를 땅에 행하는 자인 줄 깨닫는 것이라 …”

제 생각에 가르침, 가정 모임 그룹, 특별 강의에서 우리가 강조하는 것에는 우리의 공동체와 모임 가운데 이러한 종류의 패러다임 전환이 있어야 합니다. 우리는 하나님께 그분이 누구이신지를 가르칠 필요가 없습니다! 우리는 그분께 그분이 얼마나 위대하신지 말할 필요가 없습니다! 우리는 서로에게 하나님과 예슈아께서 우리가 되기를 기대하시는 것, 우리가 어떻게 경건하고 거룩하고 복되고 이방인과 가난한 이들에게 은혜가 되는 것을 더 해야 하는지를 말해야 합니다.

이번 안식일 토라 포션에 근거한 이 가르침을 맺으면서, 저는 이사야 첫 장의 한 구절을 사용하고자 합니다. 이 구절은 선지자가 그의 세대를 규정하고 있습니다. 우리 세대는 숨 쉬는 공기와 우리 영혼의 생수 같이 이것이 필요합니다.

이사야 1:18:

“여호와께서 말씀하시되 오라 우리가 서로 변론하자 너희의 죄가 주홍 같을지라도 눈과 같이 희어질 것이요 …”

 래리가 그의 손주들을 위한 기도를 부탁합니다. 저는 손주가 있는 우리 대부분이 이 세상의 상태에 대해 우려하고 있을 것이라고 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 관용이 없고, 유혹이 만연한 상태 말입니다. 성령님께서 그들이 바른 선택을 하도록 인도해 주시도록 기도해 주시기 바랍니다.

 알래스카의 앤지와 바브라(앤지의 어머니). 바브라는 노년 관련 통증과 불편이 있습니다. 힘 주시고 틍증이 줄도록 여러분의 기도에 이들을 올려드려 주십시오.

The reading for Shabbat May 17, 2025, is Emor – Leviticus 21:1-24:23.

From the Prophets (The Haftarah), the reading is from Ezekiel 44:15-31.

From the Gospel, we will read from Matthew 26:59-66.

I will do something I seldom do in these teachings gathered from the traditional Torah and prophet readings that all synagogues worldwide read every Shabbat. The custom goes back way before Yeshua and started with Ezra and Nehemiah after the Jews returned from the 70 years of exile in Babylon. We can read in the book of Nehemiah, chapter 8, and see the very beginning of this custom of public reading from the Torah and the prophets. Here is the text that starts reading the Word of God on Shabbat every week.

"Now all the people gathered as one man in the open square that was in front of the WaterGate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law." (Nehemiah 8:1-3 NKJV)

This is the very beginning of this custom and command of the Apostles in Acts 15 for all, the Jewish disciples of Yeshua and the Gentile Disciples of Yeshua on every Shabbat.

Now, let us turn to this Shabbat's Torah portion, which is read in every synagogue worldwide. I know several examples of normative Protestant churches that have restored this ancient custom hundreds of years before Yeshua was born in Bethlehem.

Let's explore the practical aspects of Leviticus 21:1- 24:23 more thoroughly, referencing related readings from the prophetic texts and the New Testament.

1. Holiness is a command in our reading this Shabbat. The first thing the Torah says about holiness is that it always requires Sacrifice. People today seldom know what HOLY means. The High Churches, like the Catholic and Orthodox, and some of the western Protestant churches, have pushed the concept of HOLY into the limbo of the undefinable, the unexplainable, and distant from our daily life as disciples of Yeshua. Holy is something mystical and far from our daily, mundane lives.

2. The command of God for all of us in the book of Leviticus in our reading of this Shabbat commands and frames the sacred nature of life as a command, not a recommendation. Leviticus calls the people to be holy. Leviticus 20:26 - "You shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy."

3. In the reading from the prophets, we find this statement that is also used in many Christian and one Jewish hymn that are sung in both Jewish synagogues and many churches: Isaiah 6:3 - "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory."

4. The New Testament doesn't emphasize the same principle as the Torah and the Prophets, making this command from Leviticus even more powerful and essential. Read 1 Peter 1:15-16. - "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct."

5. The big elephant in this room is summarised with one simple but tough word : "HOW"! The Evangelical churches seldom ask this important question: HOW?

6. That's a profound and essential question. Striving to fulfill divine commands from ancient texts like Leviticus, Isaiah, and the letters of Peter in a practical way can indeed feel challenging, especially for those of us navigating life in a complex, often conflicting world. Here are some useful steps individuals can take to embody these values of holiness, integrity, and compassion, both in friendships and even towards adversaries.

Practical Actions that will make you holy//different from the world around you:

1. Be willing and strive to be different from the "normal" social order and fashion of this world that surrounds you from the minute you open your eyes in the morning to the minute you put your head on the pillow and fall asleep, the prerequisite for all positive achievements in your life. If you worry about how others view you, you will never have the strength and determination to be holy and different for God's sake.

2. Find or create from those close to you a Community and Fellowship of people who are like you and are willing to be different from the culture of the place and the fashion of your surroundings.

To be Holy alone is to be different from the world around you. You need people who, like you, are willing to be different and have different values that direct their lives. Togetherness is a shared obligation. Putting your shoulders under the stretcher to carry those of your community who are weak and need your help, to stay with your community, and be a part of the togetherness. For this reason, God gave us the feasts of the Lord. Leviticus 23:2-3 - "These are the appointed feasts of the Lord, the holy convocations which you shall proclaim at the times appointed for them."

If the disciples of Yeshua around the world were willing to be different and Holy, this prophecy of Zechariah 8:23 will be fulfilled. Our world will change and be prepared for the return of Yeshua, our Messiah – The savior of Jews and Gentiles and Arabs and every nation and colour will be Holy.

Here is the future we expect to see, God willing, soon and in our days. - "In those days, ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, 'Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'"

For the New Testament Reading: Acts 2:42 - "And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers."

These action items are necessities for being different / even strange, in the eyes of the world around us. It could be that we will be seen as stupid fools who turn the other cheek, walk the second mile, and give our shirts and coats to the needy stranger.

The book of Leviticus 19:18 - "You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself."

Amos 5:24 - "But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream."

From the New Testament Reading, Matthew 25:40 - "And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'"

Respect and Honour are essential ingredients for being different.

Leviticus 22:32 - "You shall not profane My holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel; I am the Lord who sanctifies you."

From the Prophets: Malachi 1:6 - "A son honours his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is My honour?"

Philippians 2:3 - "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."

Of course, living a holy life includes, first and foremost, being moral and honest, and speaking the truth with love toward each other, and as Jeremiah the prophet tells us:

Jeremiah 9:24 - "But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness."

In my opinion, our emphasis in teaching, home groups, and special lectures has to be on this kind of paradigm change in our communities and meetings. We don't need to teach God who HE IS! We don't have to tell him how great HE is! We need to tell each other what GOD and YESHUA expect us to be and how we ought to do more of that which is Godly and HOLY and blessed and blessing the stranger and the needy.

To conclude this teaching based on the readings of this Shabbat, I will use one verse from the beginning of Isaiah, which the prophet prescribed to his generation. Our generation needs it like air for breathing and fresh water for our souls.

Isaiah 1:18:

"Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."

 Aida Ramirez turned 99 yrs old, this past December. Her dementia has progressed some, but slowly. Now her audiologist said that she has lost almost all her hearing in her left ear. And that by the speed it has happened, in just one year, she suspect maybe a cyst, or tumor. I'm taking her for her Doctor's appointment on the 23rd of this month. I'll be asking her Doctor for either a CAT Scan, or an MRI, to see what exactly is in her ear or brain. Let's pray is nothing major.
