======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 5 April, 2025
by Joseph Shulam The readings for Shabbat on April 5, 2025, make a big jump from the historical narrative in the Torah to a totally different kind of narrative that, generally speaking, we Jews and Christians are not ready for: the book of Leviticus! Much to my regret, having been a disciple of Yeshua, that lone Galilean Jew with twelve Jewish followers who never called themselves "Christians," for sixty-plus years, I have followed, served, nourished, and fed others around the world, fellowshipped with some of the finest servants of God on earth, giving essential lessons. Lessons in proper behavior and, unfortunately, now not to copy some of the dubious snakes in human skin called pastors, preachers, (and a few non-Jews who were called rabbis.) Since I was 16, my birthday remained the same: March 24. Since the age of 13, I have had the privilege of standing in a synagogue and reading in public in Hebrew the of Vayikra, Leviticus 1:1–5:26, and sometimes after my Bar-Mitzvah (son of the commandments), I also had the privilege of reading from the prophets, one of my very favorite chapters in Isaiah, 43:21–44:23. I didn't read From the New Testament in the synagogue, nor in Jerusalem. This Shabbat, the synagogues of the disciples of Yeshua around the world will be reading from Matthew 5:23-30. (We had many new testaments in our home and Bibles with the New Testaments. We didn't read from the New Testaments. We had another use for a book called The New Testament!) Last week, I turned 79 years old. Almost every week, when I read the Torah portions from the prophets (The Haftarah) and the New Testament, I learn something new. The word of God, from Genesis to Revelation, is a fountain of blessings and a well of fresh, cold water that refreshes my soul. The book of Leviticus starts with the Hebrew word Vayikra = God called Moses! Always in my life, when the Boss called me, it was an occasion of some anxiety. There was something formal and serious about the occasion. Like the Latin name, the book of Leviticus deals with the Levites, the guardians of worship and healing (medical), and the protectors of the purity of the camp of Israel. So, from the very opening of the book of Leviticus, we jump right into the leading and most essential instructions about the sacrificial services on the altar of God's Tabernacle. There, on that altar, the sacrifices of Israel were offered. As a reminder, there is no genuine and loving relationship without some sacrifices. You start with the limitation of a good portion of your freedom that is dedicated to your love. You continue with a big sacrifice of your freedom. If you love, you need to limit your free time for what you love and for your loved ones. You continue to sacrifice at least a portion of your time, day and night. God gave Moses the task of teaching the tribe of Levi, which was in charge of the services in the Tabernacle built by Aaron and the levitical artists, for the service of Israel (sacrifices and other services) by the tribe of Levi. This job was given to Levi as a punishment. The result of the betrayal of the tribe of Simeon and Levi against their father. They disobeyed Jacob's contract with Hamor, the ruler of Sachem (Nablus – as it is pronounced in the Arabic language. The meaning of the name in Latin is "The New City"!) Jacob blessed these two sons, Levi and Simeon: "Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. 6 Let not my soul enter their council;Let not my honor be united to their assembly. For in their anger, they slew a man, And in their self-will, they hamstrung an ox. 7 Cursed be their anger, for it is fierce. And their wrath, for it is cruel! I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel." Genesis 49:5-7 The last words of Jacob, the father of the 12 tribes, were the punishment of the tribe of Levi. The punishment was that the Tribe of Levi would have no land, a tribal territory like the other tribes. Second, God charged them with spreading all across the land of Israel, and they had to serve the people of Israel and the strangers who came through the doors of Israel's land. Jewish tradition, in putting together these three readings from the Torah, the prophets, and the New Testament, has given a genius taste of the unity and coordination of these very different texts, from the Torah and the Prophets to the Gospel of Matthew. The conjunction of these three texts from different periods and settings has cooked for us a very important soup. The Common Elements and moral and spiritual implications: Understanding Holiness! Sacrifices and Holiness require extreme attention and respect for your actions. Every move or action needs to be carefully performed with concentration and Holiness. Paying attention to every detail so that you don't end up like Nadav and Avihu, the sons of Aaron, who didn't pay attention to more information and paid with their lives. Notice in our text of Leviticus chapter 1 the detailed instruction of who does what and from where the sacrificial animal is to be taken, and how to prepare the animal for sacrifice: Leviticus 1:1, Now the LORD called to Moses, and spoke to him from the Tabernacle of meeting, saying, 2 "Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: 'When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD, you shall bring your offering of the livestock—of the herd and of the flock.If his offering is a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it of his own free will at the door of the Tabernacle of meeting before the LORD. 4 Then he shall put his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. 5 He shall kill the bull before the LORD; and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar that is by the door of the Tabernacle of meeting. 6 And he shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into its pieces. Note the detailed demands and preparation for the sacrificial animal. You can't give what you want to sacrifice to the LORD. There is a specific animal of a specific gender. Everything that we do for the Lord and for sacrificing on His altar is prescribed and paid attention to. There is no room or freedom to do whatever we choose or want. God requires total discipline and obedience from those who serve Him and the people. Isaiah 5-6, while not focused on sacrifices, critiques hollow rituals and emphasizes that God desires sincerity and purity of heart over mere external compliance with religious practices. It also addresses the intentions behind acts of service and goodness like giving, charity and offerings, praying, and fasting. The requirement of our service to the Lord through human dedication must be done from the heart with sincerity and genuine heart, and not to show and impress humans or priests. Leviticus emphasizes the need to do God's work as Levites with Holiness and purity. Isaiah 5-6, the description of Isaiah in the holy of holies in the temple in Jerusalem, doubly emphasizes how serious it is to enter the sphere of God's presence and how clean and dedicated one has to be in front of God's presence. The reading in Matthew 5-6 relates to Isaiah's experience in the holy of holies inside the temple in Jerusalem. Worship is not and must not be just another casual event! We can't participate in worship as if we are at a party roasting potatoes on the fire. Isaiah requires the worshiper to come before God with righteousness and purity of heart, and the leadership has to go in God's name with a pure heart. We are called to Holiness and sincerity before God and man, especially when we stand before God. Coming to worship before God in Isaiah demands us to approach our worship like the Levites in the Torah and like Isaiah in the prophets – pure of heart and with pure motives as servants of God for the people. I am carried away with this to summarise the relationship between the Levites; let us use the church leadership today since most of us are not Levites. Here are the central points from all three texts we read on this Shabbat. 1. Heart Over Ritual: All three texts call for an inward transformation rather than merely performing outward rituals. In Leviticus, while sacrifices are integral, they are meaningless without the genuine spirit of humility and repentance. 2. Isaiah emphasizes God's distaste for mere rituals devoid of ethical living; Matthew stresses that true righteousness comes from the heart—not from mere adherence to external laws and concentration on the outward in place of the heart. 3. Ethical Responsibility: Leviticus outlines communal obligations and moral living during worship, Isaiah calls for justice and accountability in society, and Matthew encourages loving relationships and ethical conduct toward others. They emphasize that spiritual devotion must manifest in how we treat one another. The three texts we read today indicate that worship is transformation through encounter. I learned this vital point from a book by William James, Isaiah, A Verity of Spiritual Experiences. A relationship with God on the level of a community human experience with God is (or ought to be a quiet and private experience even if we are in the middle of a big crowd. It is an experience that leads to personal transformation and a call to action, mirroring the teachings in Matthew, where engaging with God will result in a radical redefinition of how to relate to others and fulfill the motivation for our moral responsibilities. Strangers in the community become brothers in the Messiah and fellow workers in God's vineyard. In conclusion, studying these passages together reveals a strong message about the nature of worship, the necessity of purity and sincerity, and the call to live ethically in a way that reflects God's character. They collectively encourage an integrative approach to faith, where spiritual practices lead to genuine transformation in conduct and community. Shabbat Shalom. Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.
When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."
Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.
