이번 안식일에 우리는 창세기의 마지막 토라 포션인 “바예히”를 읽습니다. 이 토라 포션의 첫 단어를 번역하면 “그리고 그가 살았다”입니다. 창세기에서 삶을 말하는 단어로 시작하는 모든 토라 포션에서는 주요 성경 인물이 죽습니다. 히브리어에서 삶에 해당하는 단어는 고대나 현대나 모두 “하이” - “살다” – “삶”입니다. 창세기에서는 삶이라는 주제가 중심 주제입니다. 창세기는 주요 인물들이 산 연수와 죽을 때의 나이를 말해주는 유일한 책입니다! 중심 인물의 삶을 논한 후 그들의 죽음을 알리는 것은 우리의 존재의 연약함과 피할 수 없는 죽음을 부각시킵니다.

토라 포션은 바예히 – 창세기 47:28–50:26입니다.

선지서에서 읽는 부분은 열왕기상 2:1-12입니다.

신약성경에서 읽는 부분은 요한복음 13:1-19입니다.

“삶”(히브리어로 “하이”)이라는 단어로 시작하는 몇몇 토라 포션을 관찰하면서 사라나 아브라함이나 야곱 등 죽은 주요 인물을 그리다 보면, 토라의 서사의 깊이에 대해 흥미로운 질문이 생깁니다.

“삶”이라는 히브리어(חיים " - 하임")는 종종 유업과 계속성의 개념을 포함합니다. “삶”이라는 단어로 시작하는 토라 포션 본문은 삶과 죽음 사이의 대조와 그 인물의 삶과 유업을 추억하고 요약함으로써 삶의 계속성을 강조합니다. 히브리 민족의 조상이자 우리 믿음의 조상들인 세 족장 중 마지막 족장인 야곱의 정치한 죽음은 두 가지에 대한 빛나는 모범입니다:

1) 그들의 유업과 그들에 대한 역사적 영적 추억에는 그들의 선하고, 그다지 선하지 않고, 추한 장들도 있습니다.

각 족장들은 각자의 아들들에게 유업을 남겼습니다. 각 아들들의 축복 역시 야곱의 자녀들과 이스라엘 민족의 미래 형성에 중심 역할을 하는 가나안 땅에 대한 유업을 언급하고 있습니다. 야곱의 아들들 각자와 야곱의 성품은 이스라엘 민족의 형성과 발전에 있어서 중요한 역할을 했습니다. 야곱이 그의 아들들과 요셉의 아들들을 위해 한 축복은 그들의 삶이 미래 세대에 어떻게 영향을 끼칠지를 예언적으로 보여주는 것입니다. 사라의 죽음은 이삭을 통한 유업과 계속을 굳혔습니다. 아브라함의 죽음은 족장의 횃불을 넘겨주는 것입니다. 반면에 야곱의 죽음은 이스라엘 민족의 지파들을 확립시킴을 확증하는 것입니다. 이는 요단강과 지중해 사이의 땅을 이스라엘 땅으로 법적으로 등록하고 있습니다. 이번 토라 포션은 가나안 땅을 야곱의 아들들에게 영원한 기업으로 남기는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 창세기의 마지막 장들인 이 토라 포션은 이 땅에 대한 열쇠와 야곱의 아들들과 이스라엘 땅 사이의 연속체를 나타내는 예언적 언약을 이스라엘에 줍니다.

우리가 사라의 죽음에 대해 읽으면서 아브라함이 사라의 장사를 위해 헷 족속에게서 헤브론에 있는 막벨라 굴을 사는 일에 얼마나 많은 노력을 기울이는지를 볼 때, 우리는 히브리 민족의 아버지들에게 있어서 그들의 죽은 자를 예우하여 엄숙하게 장사 지내는 일을 살피고 무엇보다 마지막 날에 부활하기를 기다리며 잠든 사랑하는 자의 시신을 누인 묘지를 보호하고 안전을 확보하는 것이 얼마나 중요한지를 이해할 수 있습니다.

결론적으로, 토라 포션들의 구조, 유업, 계속성, 채용하는 서사적 기법, 언약이라는 것의 심오한 의미는 모두 “삶”이라는 단어로 시작되는 토라 포션과 중요 인물의 죽음 사이의 통렬한 연관성에 기여하고 있습니다.

창세기의 마지막 토라 포션에서 우리에게 계시되는 또 다른 중요 문제는 창세기 48장 16절입니다. 이 구절은 이렇게 말합니다: “הַמַּלְאָךְ֩ הַגֹּאֵ֨ל אֹתִ֜י מִכׇּל־רָ֗עיְבָרֵךְ֮ אֶת־הַנְּעָרִים֒ וְיִקָּרֵ֤א בָהֶם֙ שְׁמִ֔י וְשֵׁ֥ם אֲבֹתַ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם וְיִצְחָ֑ק וְיִדְגּ֥וּ לָרֹ֖ב בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 형제자매들을 위해 드리는 기도는 순전한 사랑이며 메시아의 몸을 세우는 것입니다. 여러분이 이기적인 이해관계 없이 여러분이 모르지만 형제인 누군가를 위해 천국에서 투표를 하는 것이기에 이것은 아가페 사랑입니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 우리가 이 세상에서는 서로 모를지라도 우리를 함께 묶는 사랑과 믿음의 긴 사슬로 연결된 다른 사람을 위해 하는 이기적이지 않고 참된 사랑과 관심의 표현인 이 기도를 보고 계십니다.

우리가 천국에 가서 우리가 위해서 기도했고 때로는 울부짖었던 사람들을 만나게 되면 기쁜 일일 것입니다. 그들은 육신적으로는 모르지만 영적으로는 같은 그리스도의 몸의 지체인 형제자매들로서, 언젠가 함께 앉아 “제가 당신이 치유되도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!”, “당신이 가자지구 하마스 테러리스트들의 잔인한 손아귀에서 인질들을 구하기 위해 가자지구에서 싸울 때 제가 당신이 안전하도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!” 이야기 나누는 특권을 누리게 될 이들입니다.

하나님의 은혜와, 치유와 힘을 주시는 하나님의 부드러운 손길이 필요한 다음 형제자매님들을 위해 기도해 주십시오.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 10 January, 2025

This Shabbat, we will read the last Torah portion of the book of Genesis, Vayechi. The first words of this Torah portion translate to English as "and he lived." Every time a Torah portion in the book of Genesis starts with words that speak of life, a major Biblical character dies. The word for life in Hebrew, both ancient and modern, is "Chai" – LIVE – LIFE. The subject of life in the Book of Genesis is a central topic. The book of Genesis is the only book of the Bible that gives the years that the significant characters lived and the age at which they died! The introduction of a central character's death after discussing their life highlights the fragility of existence and the inevitability of our mortality.

The Torah reading is Vayechi – Genesis 47:28–50:26.

From the Prophets 1 Kings 2:1-12.

The reading is from the New Testament, the Gospel of John 13:1-19.

Observing that some Torah portions begin with the word "life" (in Hebrew, "chai") and feature significant characters who die—such as Sarah, Abraham, and Jacob—raises intriguing questions about the Torah's narrative depth.

The Hebrew word of "life" (חיים -" - chayim") often includes the idea of legacy and continuity. By beginning a portion with "life," the text emphasizes the contrast between life and death and the continuity of life by the memory and summary of the person's life and legacy. The elaborate death of Jacob, the last of the three major fathers of the Hebrew nation and fathers of our faith, is a splendid example of two things:

1) Their legacy and historical and spiritual memory include their life's good, not-so-good, and ugly chapters.

2) The inheritance and life that they leave for the next generation. As is the case of Jacob in our Torah portion, Veyechi is a good example. Jacob's death scene is not just his death and burial in the same Hebrew cave called Machpelah. Jacob retells a part of his history and leaves an inheritance to all twelve sons! Jacob is buried in the same cave as Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebecca. Four generations of the patriarch are buried in the same place in Hebron. The city where Abraham intertwined and fed lunch to the three "angels" – according to the text and tradition, the three guests were God Himself, Gabriel, and Michael, the two angels that relate to the nation of Israel.

Each of the patriarchs leaves an inheritance to his sons. The blessings of each son also contain some mention of their inheritance of the land of Canaan, which plays a central role in the inheritance of the children of Jacob and the formation of the future of the Israelite nation. Each of the sons of Jacob and his character played a significant role in the formation and development of the Israelite nation. Jacob's blessings for the sons of Joseph and his other sons are a prophetic demonstration of how their lives impact future generations. The death of Sarah establishes an inheritance and continuity through Isaac. Abraham's death is the passing of the patriarchal torch. In contrast, Jacob's death is a confirmation of the establishment of the tribes of the nation of Israel. It gives the legal registration of the land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea as the land of Israel. This Torah portion focuses on the legacy of the land of Canaan to Jacob's sons as an eternal inheritance left behind. These last chapters of Genesis give Israel the keys to this land and a prophetic covenant that represents a continuum between the sons of Jacob and the land of Israel.

In the last chapter of Genesis, Jacob leaves an inheritance to all his twelve sons and Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Menashe. This inheritance is also a summary, not of the past events, but of prophecy, mostly blessing. But Simeon and Levi receive harsh condemnation and, in fact, a curse. "Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place." (Genesis 49:5 NKJV)

The occasion which angered Jacob and embarrassed him in front of the local Cannaite population of Shechem was the handling of the rape of Dinah, Jacob's granddaughter and the sister of Simeon and Levi. Jacob didn't forgive them, even on his deathbed. Their place for the blessing was filled with Ephraim and Menashe.

Jacob was old and had a difficult life from his birth, but his memory was sharp and unforgiving. He blessed most of his sons, including Joseph's Ephraim and Menashe.

The relationship of God and Israel is a Covenantal relationship. It is not only a birthright issue. The concept of covenant in Judaism is intrinsically connected to the idea of death and inheritance of both our life and inheritance in all of God's promises. God is in control of both our birth and our death. Our inheritance is a contract between God and us, and God keeps his promises to us individuals and to those who come after us because it is an inheritance. The patriarchs and matriarchs are central to God's covenant with Israel, and their deaths often serve as pivotal moments that reaffirm or transition this covenant to the next generation, ushering in new phases of the relationship between God and His people.

The significance of life and death resonates deeply within the Bible and Jewish thought and culture, which is why the important characters in the Bible have their deaths mentioned in different ways: "They have joined with their fathers." The cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth is a prominent motif in many Biblical texts and teachings, reminding believers of the transient nature of existence and the permanence of legacy and memory.

In the Hebrew Bible, the deaths of significant biblical characters are often marked by specific idioms, phrases, or narrative techniques that convey their passing and significance. Here are some notable examples, along with their corresponding references:

1. And he died" (וַיָּמָת / Vayamat)

2. Abraham: "And Abraham died at a good old age, an old man full of years; and he was gathered to his people." (Genesis 25:8)

3. Sarah: "And Sarah died in Kiriath-Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her." (Genesis 23:2)

4. "And was gathered to his people" (וַיֵּאָסֵף אֶל-עַמָּיו / Vaye'asef el-amav

5. Abraham: "And Abraham died, and was gathered to his people." (Genesis 25:8)

6. Isaac: "And Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, old and full of days." (Genesis 35:29)

7. Jacob: "Then Jacob breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people." (Genesis 49:33)

8. "And he was buried" (וַיִּקָּבֵר / Vayikka'ver): This phrase indicates the physical action of burial, often accompanied by a statement about the location of the burial that carries significance. For example:

9. Sarah: "And Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah." (Genesis 23:19)

10. Jacob: "And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept over him, and kissed him. And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father." (Genesis 50:1-2), followed by mention of Jacob being buried in the cave of Machpelah(Genesis 49:31).

11. "He went to his fathers" (וַיֵּשֶׁב עִם-אֲבוֹתָיו Vayyeshev im-avotav): This idiom conveys a sense of reunion with ancestors and carries a more metaphysical connotation than a straightforward description of death.

12. Levi: "And when Levi died, he was gathered to his people." (Exodus 6:16) "And he rested with his fathers" (וַיִּשְׁכַּב עִם-אֲבוֹתָיו / Vayishkav im-avotav). This phrase is often used to reflect the peaceful repose of the deceased and can indicate a kind of family connection even after death.

13. David: "And David slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David." (1 Kings 2:10)

14. Moses' death is described in a distinctive manner in Deuteronomy 34:5-6: "So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor, but no one knows the place of his burial to this day." This narrative emphasizes God's direct involvement and the mystery surrounding his burial.

15. Aaron: The announcement of Aaron's death is similarly significant: Numbers 20:29 states, "And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they mourned for Aaron thirty days." This reflects the communal grieving for his death.

16. Rachel's death is especially described in Genesis 35:19: "And Rachel died, and she was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem)." Rachel's death is again mentioned on her grave in Genesis 35:20.

These texts are significant and interesting because they relate the deaths of our patriarchs and matriarchs to the Holy Spirit, who shared so much information and different phrases and idioms about the deaths of our Biblical patriarchs and heroes.

The biblical idioms associated with death convey not only the factual aspect of mortality but also profound spiritual implications, emphasizing themes of legacy, continuity, and the physical and metaphysical connections to one's ancestors. These expressions honor the deceased and reflect the cultural and religious values of the time, placing immense importance on legacy, identity, and familial relationships.

When we read about the death of Sarah and how much effort and care Abraham, put into Sarah's burial and the purchase from the Hittites of the cave of Machpelah in Hebron, we can understand how important it was for the fathers of the Hebrew nation to take care and bury their dead in an honorable and dignified manner and above all to have a place protected and secured for the body of the loved one who died waiting for the resurrection from the dead in the last days.

In conclusion, the Torah portions' structure, legacy, continuity themes, the narrative techniques employed, and the profound significance of the covenant all contribute to the poignant connection between the beginning of these portions with "life" and the deaths of foundational characters.

Another critical issue revealed to us in this last portion of the reading of the Torah of Genesis; Genesis 48:16. The Hebrew text says: “הַמַּלְאָךְ֩ הַגֹּאֵ֨ל אֹתִ֜י מִכׇּל־רָ֗עיְבָרֵךְ֮ אֶת־הַנְּעָרִים֒ וְיִקָּרֵ֤א בָהֶם֙ שְׁמִ֔י וְשֵׁ֥ם אֲבֹתַ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם וְיִצְחָ֑ק וְיִדְגּ֥וּ לָרֹ֖ב בְּקֶ֥רֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃

"The Messenger who has redeemed me from all harm—Bless the lads. In them may my name be recalled, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they Fish (multitudes) in the land." If I translate the phrase in red from Hebrew literally using AI, this is going to be the literal translation:

"What does this blessing from Jacob on his deathbed mean? With what other verses connected to Abraham and Isaac does this text relate?

Here it is dear brothers: Genesis 12:4-5, "So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, AND THE PEOPLE WHOM THEY HAD ACQUIRED IN HARAN, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan." (Genesis 12:4-5 NKJV)

If you read the English NKJV and other English translations of the Bible of this text, they make Abraham a slave trader, "The people whom they had acquired in Haran." Interpreting that Abraham shopped for these people and purchased them to come with him to the land he didn't know. How many men did Abraham have in his encampment? In Genesis chapter 14, when Abraham chased the five kings from the north that kidnapped Lot and his family and took much booty, Abraham had 318 men from his camp. Abraham and his men chased these five kings from the north to Syria and recaptured Lot, his family, and the booty of these kings. Then Abraham returned by way of Jerusalem and gave 10% to Melchizedek from the booty that he captured from the kings of the North. So, Abraham had 318 men between the ages of 20 and 50. If these men were married and had one child each, Abraham had more than 1000 people in his camp.

This phrase, translated into English, is "The People whom they (Abraham and his family) acquired in Haran!" Abraham was not an enslaver! To make or acquire souls is to evangelize. The word used in Genesis 48:16 is "Fished." Yes, fish! Multiply and lay many, many eggs.

We learn that Abraham and Isaac were evangelists! They influenced hundreds of people from Haran and Northern Syria (Assyria) to leave their idols behind and follow Abraham on the journey to the land of Canaan with a new faith in One God. The God who created this world and all that is in it. The God that doesn't need temples made with human hands and images of himself in marble and stone or wood and Gold. The God that decides when the rain will fall on His Earth and when the snow will cover the Sierra Nevada.

Jews and many Christians must take the Apostle Paul's sermon in the Areopagus, the Supreme Court of Athens, Greece, more seriously. Suppose we don't take God's word as disciples of The Messiah more seriously and ignore the significant principle for which we are disciples of the crucified. In that case, we will miss that special occasion that will ensure our life on earth and the eternal life prepared for each as a walk in the park. We are stepping on the path that Yeshua walked before us. Our road ahead is not a new road. Our path has been watered by the blood of saints who were burned alive and crucified in the main squares of Madrid and Lisbon – Rome –Venice – York, England – Lyon, France – and all the way to Manila, in the Philippines.

Christian brothers remember this simple principle from God's Word. Hate is a boomerang. If you hate and persecute one Jew, you hate the King of the Jews, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and Moses and Aaron and David Ben-Gurion, and Albert Einstein. If you hate a Jew, you are putting your own faith and life in danger of depravity because the commands in the Bible are to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. The God of Israel, who created the Heavens and the Earth, expects you to have a thankful attitude toward the nation of Israel, the Jewish people, the country of Israel, the land of Israel, and the prosperity of Israel as a nation, as a land, as a people. Israel is the only people and nation with promises of collective salvation both in the New Testament and in what is called the Old Testament. Suppose you examine the nations that have hated and persecuted Israel and the Jews and didn't repent. In that case, you will quickly realize that it is not wise to hate any nation, race, or color because we are all created by the almighty God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We are all children of Abraham by faith.

I will end with the following paradigm that opens the story of Abraham and his descendants:

"I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.

I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you, And in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed." (Genesis 12:2-3 NKJV)

The Prayer List

It has been a while since I mentioned a prayer for the hostages to return home safely. Today two bodies of Youssef Alzyadni & Hamza Alzyadni were located in a tunnel in Gaza - Hamas's terror know no bounds, the Alzyadni family were of the Muslim faith and part of the Bedouin community. The Bedouin community have Israeli citizenship and live a nomadic life style. The family worked in Kibbutzim (farming settlements) when they were taken hostage. Please continue to knock on the doors of heaven for the sake of all those in captivity.

The fires in Pepperdine California are affecting some of those in receiving the prayer list. We ask for the safety of those that are on the move and those that have not left their homes at this time. I spoke with some of the people today and they have lost power while the fires are going on. Others have had to relocate further away inland away from the 5 fires that are raging. When we consider all that is happening you must take notice. Is this an opportunity to wake up the world to get its attentions to evaluate important matters of faith and existence. (Fires, Volcanos, Freezing storms, Wars, etc)

Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.

When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

 Isabella is a young women who is at the hospital for diagnosis regrading issues that have prevented her from sleeping this last week. Please pray for the doctors and her to find what the underlying causes and for a solution.

 Jose needs your prayers for a blessing on his marriage to grow stronger and prayers for the birth of a Son.

 Aida Ramirez is 98 years old and suffering from first stages of dementia. Also her daughter Aida Gonzalez needs prayer for strength and Gods grace and protection as she is taking care of her mother.

 Pat S needs prayers as she is suffering memory loss, Philip her husband is a dedicated man of God who is caring for her diligently - please keep them both in prayers.

 Sarah Sacks has completed her radiation treatments and is doing well. Please give another prayer of thanks and praise.

 Elisheva is studying for passing Financial certifications in September. Please pray for calmness in her studies and confidence in passing her exams next month. also for health and her household.

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
