저는 지난 번 포션을 이메일 보냈었는데요, 지난 주 이후 새로운 기도 요청을 받았고 팟캐스트와 마음의 당분 비디오도 새로 게시했습니다.

게다가 이스라엘 상황이 더 어려워졌습니다. 군은 “북쪽 화살들”이라고 부르는 새 군사작전을 시작했습니다. 이 공격은 헤즈볼라의 군 인프라를 겨냥하여, 미사일, 드론, 로켓포 발사 능력에 집중하고 있습니다. 국경을 넘어 폭격을 주고받은 11개월 동안 거의 15만 명이 집을 잃고 쫓겨났습니다.

평안을 구해 기도해 주십시오. 저희는 저희 이웃이 터널을 뚫고 이스라엘을 공격하려는 목적으로 거실과 지하실에 로켓포와 미사일로 무장할까 두려워할 일 없이 이스라엘 땅에서 평안 가운데 살고 싶습니다.

이번 주에 시편 121:4을 인쇄하여 주머니에 가지고 다니시기 바랍니다. 여러분은 열쇠를 꺼낼 때 이 문구도 꺼내 이스라엘에 평안을 구해 기도하는 것도 기억해 주시기 바랍니다.

이번 안식일 모든 회당에서 읽는 말씀은 이렇습니다. (신약성경 부분은 없는데요, 신약성경 부분을 더 읽는 것은 메시아닉 회중에서만 읽습니다.)

토라 포션은 두 개로, 니짜빔-바옐렠, 신명기 29:9~31:30입니다.

선지서에서 읽는 부분 “하프타라”는 이사야 61:10~63:9가 될 것입니다.

이사야 61장 이 말씀이 중요한 한 가지 이유는 예슈아께서 그의 부모님 요셉과 마리아를 찾아뵈러 고향에 가셨을 때 나사렛 회당에서 이 본문을 읽으셨기 때문입니다. 전형적으로, 하프타라 (선지서에서 읽는 부분) 말씀은 생일이나 축하할 일이 있는 사람을 예우하여 읽게 해줍니다. 이 말씀이 예슈아께서 나사렛에 있는 그분의 가족을 찾아갔을 때 주어진 말씀이므로, 그분의 생일이 나팔절(그때나 지금이나 “로쉬 하샤나”라고 부르는)에 가까운 때임을 암시하는 것일 수 있습니다.

저희는 이번 안식일에 신약성경까지도 읽습니다. 역시 흥미롭고 중요한 내용이 가득한 누가복음 마지막 장인 24장의 누가복음 24:1-43을 읽을 것입니다.

신명기 29:9~31:30에서 관찰되는 몇 가지는 이렇습니다. 제가 이러한 관찰 사항을 선택한 이유는 이것들이 우리 시대의 그리스도의 유대인 제자들과 비-유대인 제자들에게 분명하고 즉각적인 의미가 있기 때문입니다. 제가 기독교인들에게 의미가 있다고 말씀드리지 않았다는 것을 주의하시기 바랍니다. 그 이유는 간단합니다: 기독교인들은 배스킨 라빈스 아이스크림 맛 종류보다 1000배나 더 다양한 기호를 가지고 있기 때문입니다. 저는 제 기독교 형제들에게 그들을 대상으로 말하는 것이 어렵다는 것을 알게 되었는데요, 왜냐하면 교파가 서로 너무 다르고, 그들 모두 자신들을 기독교인이라고 부르기 때문입니다. 그러나 신약성경을 통틀어 어떤 사도든, 혹은 어떤 사도의 사촌이든 “나는 기독교인이다!”라고 말한 분이 없습니다.

사도행전 11:26을 보면, 시리아 안디옥에서 이교도들이 예슈아의 제자들을 “그리스도인(기독교인)”이라고 불렀습니다! 제자들 중 그 누구도 “나는 그리스도인이다.”라고 말한 적이 없습니다. 그러나 저는 사도 바울을 이방인들에게 데려가 여러 교회에 보낸 서신에서 그가 자신의 신분을 어떻게 밝혔는지 여러분에게 제시하도록 하겠습니다.

사도행전 21:39, “바울이 이르되 나는 유대인이라 소읍이 아닌 길리기아 다소 시의 시민이니 청컨대 백성에게 말하기를 허락하라 하니”

사도행전 22:3, “나는 유대인으로 길리기아 다소에서 났고 이 성에서 자라 가말리엘의 문하에서 우리 조상들의 율법의 엄한 교훈을 받았고 오늘 너희 모든 사람처럼 하나님께 대하여 열심이 있는 자라”

빌립보서 3:4-5, “…나는 더욱 그러하리니 나는 팔일 만에 할례를 받고 이스라엘 족속이요 베냐민 지파요 히브리인 중의 히브리인이요 율법으로는 바리새인이요”

기독교권의 분열은 극히 의문스러운 존재인 사탄에게만 좋은 일을 합니다. 주님께서는 이름은 여러 가지여도 결코 나뉘지 않았고, 마틴 루터나 요한 웨슬리나 메노나 세례요한을 따르지도 않는 하나의 공동체(교회)의 주님이십니다. 다음은 예슈아의 제자들 공동체가 신약성경에서 자신의 신분을 어떻게 나타냈는지를 보여줍니다:

신약성경에서 예수(예슈아)를 따르는 자들은 여러 가지 이름과 묘사로 언급되고 있습니다. 다음은 주요 용어와 해당 말씀입니다:

1. 제자들 (가장 흔한 이름이며 가장 여러 번 사용됨) – 예수님을 따르는 자들을 묘사하는 데에 가장 먼저 사용되었습니다. 마태복음 28:19, 사도행전 6:1

2. 믿는 자들 – 예수님을 믿는 믿음을 가진 사람들을 가리킬 때 사용되었습니다. 사도행전 5:14, 디모데전서 4:12

3. 성도들 – 이 용어는 예수님을 따르는 자들의 거룩함과 성화를 강조합니다. 로마서 1:7, 에베소서 1:1, 빌립보서 1:1.

4. 형제들 – 예수님을 따르는 자들은 자신들을 믿음의 가족의 일원으로 보았습니다. 사도행전 9:30, 고린도전서 15:6, 히브리서 2:11

5. “그 길”을 따르는 자들 - 이 용어는 하나님을 기쁘시게 하며 사는 방식, 그 길로서의 예수님의 제자들의 초기 유대인 운동을 묘사하는 데에 사용되었습니다. 사도행전 9:2, 사도행전 19:9, 사도행전 24:14

6. 그리스도의 종(노예) – 이 용어는 예수님의 뜻에 순종함을 강조합니다. 로마서 1:1, 빌립보서 1:1, 베드로후서 1:1

7. 하나님의 자녀** – 예수님을 따르는 자들은 또한 하나님의 가족에 입양된 것으로 동일시되기도 합니다. 요한복음 1:12, 로마서 8:16, 요한일서 3:1.

이들 이름은 믿는 자들의 정체성, 목적, 그리스도와의 관계, 서로와의 공동체적 관계의 여러 양상을 반영하는 것입니다.

이제, 신명기 29:9부터 시작되는 토라 포션으로 갑니다. 예루살렘에 있는 저희 회당에서 저희는 필사된 토라 두루마리를 읽습니다. 저희는 매년 초막절(숙콧) 끝에 이 두루마리를 한 끝에서 다른 끝까지 다시 맙니다. 이 두루마리는 염소 가죽으로 만든 것인데요, 거의 40미터나 됩니다. 이 두루마리의 무게는 15킬로그램 정도 될 것인데요, 서기관이 깃털 펜을 가지고 특별한 잉크로 한 자 한 자 필사하기 위해 가공하여 준비된 어린 염소 가죽에 필사된 좋은 두루마리의 평균 무게입니다. 한 해가 저물어갈수록 이 두루마리의 한 쪽은 두툼해지고, 다른 쪽은 홀쭉해집니다.

지난 안식일 저희 회중에서는 한 해의 끝에 가까워지고 곧 저희 회중 예배 때 이 두루마리를 다시 처음 창세기 1장으로 되감느라 시간을 들이게 될 것이 분명히 보였습니다. 이것은 누구에게든 신체적으로 쉬운 일이 아니지만, 저처럼 늙고 병든 사람에게는 힘든 일이 될 것입니다.

제 생애에 처음부터 다시 시작할 수 있는 일이 매우 드뭅니다. 주님께서는 저를, 제가 저 자신을 나귀로 정의 내리는 것처럼, 메시아의 나귀로 사용하셨습니다. 제가 어딜 가든 제가 뭘 하든 저는 메시아를 모시고 갔고 제 말을 듣고자 하고 제게 말씀을 전할 기회를 주는 누구에게든 제가 할 수 있는 최선을 다해 그분을 전했습니다. 다행인 것은 전 세계 많은 곳에서 이 나귀가 히히잉 울지 않고 기도를 많이 했다는 점입니다! 주님께서는 예루살렘 출신의 이 외눈 유대인을 50개국에서 사용하셨습니다. 이 나라들 중 몇 나라에는 어떤 것에 대해서 항의하는 개신교가 되지 않고, 현대 이스라엘 역사 가운데 하나님께서 어떤 일을 하고 계시는지, 하나님께서 모세와 이사야, 예레미야, 에스겔, 아모스에게 하신 그분의 약속을 어떻게 이루어가고 계시는지, 토라와 선지서에서 그분께서 하신 모든 약속들이 어떻게 이루어지고 있는 과정에 있는지를 전하는 초대교회의 회복을 따라가는 현지 교회들이 있습니다. 제가 모든 약속이라고 말할 때 여기에는 신약성경과 요한계시록에서 약속된 약속도 포함하는 것입니다. 저는 제가 베드로, 바울, 마리아, 어쩌면 엘리야와 엘리사와도 교제 나누기 전에 이 약속들이 이루어지는 것을 보기를 바랍니다. 저는 엘리야와 엘리사를 자기 정원에 앉아 왕들과 제사장들을 비판하되 왕들과 제자장들의 아내들은 그리 자주 비판하지는 않았던 아주 사랑스럽고 온유한 선지자들 중 몇 사람만큼이나 어쩌면 그들보다 조금 더 좋아합니다.

이번 안식일에 읽는 토라 포션은 신명기 29:9에서 시작됩니다. 그래도 저는 29:1부터 시작하고 싶습니다. 그 이유는 간단한데요, 신명기 29장 1절이 이 책 신명기가 “두 번째 토라(율법) 수여”임을 계시하기 때문입니다.

“호렙에서 이스라엘 자손과 세우신 언약 외에 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하여 모압 땅에서 그들과 세우신 언약의 말씀은 이러하니라” (신명기 29:1)

첫 번째 토라(율법) 수여는 시내산(호렙산)에서였고, 지금 두 번째는 이스라엘이 가나안에 들어가기 직전 모압 땅에서입니다. 이 구절은 우리가 토라를 이해하는 데에 있어서, 특히 하나님께서 40년 전에 주신 것을 바꾸시고, 수정하시고, 다시 돌려보내실 수 있는 그분의 권리를 이해하는 데에 있어서 매우 중요합니다. 종교적 사고는 경직됩니다. 일반적으로 말해서, 하나님의 계시는, 시내산에서 돌에 새기기는 했지만, 여전히 생생히 살아 있습니다. 하나님께서 토라를 바꾸시고 몇 가지 계명은 다시 돌려보내신 예가 몇 개 있습니다. 그렇게 바꾸신 것은 선지서에서 아주 중요한 의미가 있습니다. 하나님의 입으로 말씀하시고 하나님의 손가락으로 돌에 새기신 토라에서 가장 거룩한 말씀에 몇 가지 예가 있습니다.

십계명은 성경에 두 번 기록되어 있습니다. 한 번은 **출애굽기 20:1-17**이고, 그 다음 **신명기 5:6-21**에 다시 기록되어 있습니다. 이 둘이 근본적으로 같기는 하지만, 문구나 강조점이나 추가적인 상세 사항에 살짝 다른 점이 있습니다. 다음은 두 버전을 비교한 것입니다(킹제임스흠정역):

첫째 계명: 다른 신들을 두지 말라**

출애굽기 20:3: “너는 내 앞에 다른 신들을 두지 말라.”

신명기 5:7: “너는 내 앞에 다른 신들을 두지 말라.”

이 계명에 있어서 두 구절은 동일합니다.

둘째 계명: 우상을 만들지 말라

출애굽기 20:4-6**: “너는 너를 위하여 어떤 새긴 형상도 만들지 말고…그것들에게 절하지 말고 그것들을 섬기지 말라. 나 곧 {주} 네 [하나님]은 질투하는 [하나님]이니라.…나를 사랑하고 내 명령들을 지키는 수천의 사람들에게는 긍휼을 베푸느니라.”

신명기 5:8-10: 문구는 유사하지만 벌과 사랑을 살짝 강조하고 있습니다: “나 {주} 네 [하나님]은 질투하는 [하나님]이니라.…아버지들의 불법을 자손들에게 벌하거니와…긍휼을 베푸느니라.”

주된 차이점은 신명기는 세대를 이은 결과를 좀 더 명확히 하여 “불법을 찾아 벌하신다”는 것과 “꾸준한 사랑(긍휼)을 베푸신다”는 것을 강조하고 있는 것입니다.

셋째 계명: 하나님의 이름을 헛되이 취하지 말라

출애굽기 20:7: “너는 {주} 네 [하나님]의 이름을 헛되이 취하지 말라. {주}가 자신의 이름을 헛되이 취하는 자를 죄 없다 하지 아니하리라.”

신명기 5:11: 출애굽기와 똑같은 문구.

이 계명은 똑같습니다.

넷째 계명: 안식일을 기억하라

출애굽기 20:8-11: “안식일을 기억하여 거룩히 지키라.…엿새 동안에 {주}가 하늘과 땅과 바다와 그것들 안에 있는 모든 것을 만들고 일곱째 날에 안식하였느니라.…”

신명기 5:12-15: “…안식일을 지켜 거룩히 구별하라.…기억하라. 네가 이집트 땅에서 종이었을 때에 {주} 네 [하나님]이 … 너를 거기서 데리고 나왔나니 그러므로 {주} 네 [하나님]이 네게 명령하여 안식일을 지키게 하였느니라.”

신명기는 안식일을 지키는 역사적 이유(이스라엘 백성에게 그들의 애굽 종살이에서의 해방을 상기시킴)를 덧붙이고 있는 반면, 출애굽기는 안식의 이유로서 창조 서사에 초점을 맞추고 있습니다.

다섯째 계명: 네 아버지와 어머니를 공경하라

출애굽기 20:12: “네 아버지와 어머니를 공경하라. 그리하면 {주} 네 [하나님]이 네게 주는 땅에서 네 날들이 길리라.”

신명기 5:16: “{주} 네 [하나님]이 네게 명령한 대로 네 아버지와 어머니를 공경하라. 그리하면 … 네 날들이 길게 되고 네가 잘되리라.”

신명기에는 “네가 잘되리라”는 문구를 덧붙여 잘 되고 장수할 것이라고 약속을 확대합니다.

여섯째 계명: 살인하지 말라

출애굽기 20:13**: “너는 살인하지 말라.”

신명기 5:17: “너는 살인하지 말라.”

동일 문구.

일곱째 계명: 간음하지 말라

출애굽기 20:14**: “너는 간음하지 말라.”

신명기 5:18: “너는 간음하지 말라.”

동일 문구.

여덟째 계명: 도둑질하지 말라

출애굽기 20:15: “너는 도둑질하지 말라.”

신명기 5:19: “너는 도둑질하지 말라.”

동일 문구.

아홉째 계명: 거짓 증언하지 말라

출애굽기 20:16**: “너는 네 이웃을 대적하여 거짓 증언하지 말라.”

신명기 5:20: “너는 네 이웃을 대적하여 거짓 증언하지 말라.”

동일 문구.

열째 계명: 탐내지 말라

출애굽기 20:17: “너는 네 이웃의 집을 탐내지 말라. 너는 네 이웃의 아내나 그의 남종이나 그의 여종이나 그의 소나 그의 나귀나 네 이웃의 소유 중 아무것도 탐내지 말라.”

신명기 5:21: “너는 네 이웃의 아내를 탐내지 말며 네 이웃의 집이나 그의 밭이나 그의 남종이나 그의 여종이나 그의 소나 그의 나귀나 네 이웃의 소유 중 그 어떤 것도 탐내지 말라.”

신명기는 순서를 바꿔 “아내”를 먼저 두고, 탐내지 말아야 하는 목록에 “밭”을 추가하고 있습니다.

우리는 이런 작은 변경이 모세가 40살이나 더 늙은 탓이라고 할 수 있을 것입니다. 그의 정신에 치매증이 있을 수도 있고, 그가 그냥 몇몇 문구를 잊었을 수도 있습니다. 그렇지만 우리 모두는 하나님의 성령님께서 모세와 함께 계시며 그가 잊지 않도록 지켜주셨을 것이라는 것을 믿습니다.

또 다른 한 편, 우리는 하나님께서 친히 성경에서 가장 거룩한 이 본문에 몇 가지 작은 변경을 하셨다고 말할 수 있을 것입니다. 하나님께서는 시내광야에서 40년을 보낸 이 세대가 그분께서 엿새 동안 천지를 창조하시고 일곱째 날에 쉬신 것을 알기를 원하셨습니다.

하나님께서는 이스라엘에 그들이 애굽에서 종살이할 때는 그들에게 안식하며 그들의 영혼을 소생케 할 안식일이 없었다는 것을 상기시키고 싶으셨습니다.

하나님께서는 이스라엘 자손들로 하여금 그들이 그들의 부모를 공경하면 하나님으로부터 잘 되는 축복을 받게 될 것이라는 것을 알게 하고 싶으셨습니다.

열째 계명에서 하나님께서는 우리에게 탐내지 말라고 하실 때 아내를 먼저 두시고 밭을 추가하셨습니다. 이것이 흥미로운 이유는 오늘날 문명사회의, 그리고 어쩌면 역사에서도 큰 문제 중 하나는 가족 내부의 문제이기 때문일 것입니다.

하나님께는 토라를 바꾸실 권리가 있고, 그런 예가 몇 개 있습니다. 시내산에서 수여하신 토라에서는 아들만 아버지의 재산을 상속할 수 있었는데, 딸만 있고 아들은 없는 아버지의 경우처럼 말입니다.

민수기 26:33: “헤벨의 아들 슬로브핫은 아들이 없고 딸뿐이라 그 딸의 이름은 말라와 노아와 호글라와 밀가와 디르사니”

민수기 27:1 “요셉의 아들 므낫세 종족들에게 므낫세의 현손 마길의 증손 길르앗의 손자 헤벨의 아들 슬로브핫의 딸들이 찾아왔으니 그의 딸들의 이름은 말라와 노아와 호글라와 밀가와 디르사라”

모세는 하나님께 이 이슈를 제기했고, 하나님께서는 이 법이 공정하지 않음을 보시고 딸들도 실질적으로 아버지의 재산을 상속할 수 있도록 바꿔주셨습니다.

또 다른 예는 예레미야 31:28-30에 있습니다. (그리고 이것은 에스겔 18장에 훨씬 더 상세한 예가 있습니다.)

“깨어서 그들을 뿌리 뽑으며 무너뜨리며 전복하며 멸망시키며 괴롭게 하던 것과 같이 내가 깨어서 그들을 세우며 심으리라 여호와의 말씀이니라 그 때에 그들이 말하기를 다시는 아버지가 신 포도를 먹었으므로 아들들의 이가 시다 하지 아니하겠고 신 포도를 먹는 자마다 그의 이가 신 것 같이 누구나 자기의 죄악으로 말미암아 죽으리라” (예레미야 31:28-30)

예레미야 31:28–37을 읽으시고, 이스라엘과, 유대민족과, 십자가를 통해 좋은 열매 맺는 참감람나무에 접붙여진 모든 사람이 이스라엘과 함께 서야 한다는 것을 보시기 바랍니다. 특히 그리스도의 제자들이며 우리 메시아 예슈아의 피로 말미암아 제공된 하나님의 은혜에 함께 참예한 자들인 우리는 더욱 그러합니다. 예슈아께서 예루살렘으로 예슈아의 유대인 제자들 공동체에게로 다시 오신다는 것을 잊지 마십시오. 이것은 우리로 하여금 유대인과 비-유대인에게 예슈아께서 실체시며 그분의 신부에게 돌아오실 것이라고 계속해서 가르치며 전할 수 있게 해줄 것입니다.

제가 이번 안식일 토라 포션과 선지서 포션에서 제시하기로 선택한 교훈들은 기본적이지만 중요합니다. 왜냐하면 이 교훈들이 지극히 평범한 교회에서 얻는 설교나 가르침에서 무시되고 있기 때문입니다. 대부분의 교회들의 의제는 성경을 가르치거나 교회 성원들이 스스로 공부하고 생각하는 방법을 가르치는 것이 아닙니다. 메시지는 통조림으로 만들어졌습니다. 참치는 막 잡혀서 바다에서 나왔을 때 가장 신선합니다. 제가 제 평생 대부분 더 잘 보고 더 잘 듣기 위해 앞자리에 앉아 보고 들은 것은 설교자들이 의제가 있을 때 메시지가 좋았다는 것입니다. 하나님의 말씀은 교회 성원들로 하여금 ‘뭔가를 하도록’, ‘뭔가를 드리도록’, ‘뭔가를 사도록’ 조장하고, 팔고, 고무하는 것입니다. 형제자매들이 세상에 대하여 그리고 이 세상이 거의 매일 우리에게 내놓는 영적 도전들과 도덕적 도전들에 대항하여 전투와 방어와 승리의 삶을 위해 구비되고 훈련되어야 한다는 개념은 대부분의 복음주의 교단들과 무교파 교단들의 대부분의 회중(교회)들의 주된 의제가 아닙니다.

하나님께서 여러분 모두에게 복 주시기를 축원합니다. 이스라엘을 위해 기도해 주시고 이스라엘과 함께 서 주시기 바랍니다. 이스라엘 나라는 여전히 하나님의 의제 목록 상위에 있고, 그리스도의 몸의 미래는 예루살렘과 이스라엘 나라와 연관되어 있습니다. 바울은 에베소서 2:10–18에서 이것을 분명하게 말하고 있습니다:

“그 때에 너희는 그리스도 밖에 있었고 이스라엘 나라 밖의 사람이라 약속의 언약들에 대하여는 외인이요 세상에서 소망이 없고 하나님도 없는 자이더니” (12절)

그러나 지금은 이스라엘 베들레헴에서 태어났고, 예루살렘에서 죽었다가 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나셨고, 예루살렘으로 돌아오실 저 유대인을 통해 그리스도인 형제자매 여러분은 싫든 좋든 예루살렘과 연관되게 만드셨습니다. 여러분은 예루살렘이 필요하게 될 것입니다. 그러니, 여러분이 지금 이스라엘과 함께 서고, 이스라엘에 있는 여러분의 유대인 형제들과 아랍인 형제들과 함께 서고, 시편에서 말하는 것처럼 예루살렘과 예루살렘의 평안을 위해 기도하는 것을 매일의 습관으로 삼아 시작하고, 하나님으로부터의 평안과 번역본의 표현대로 형통을 받는 것이 현명하고 가장 좋은 일일 것입니다. 제 생각에는 평안을 받는 것이 형통보다 더 중요합니다.

하나님께서 저희와 이스라엘과 예루살렘을 위해 기도하는 모든 이에게 복 주시기를 축원합니다. 이스라엘은 가자지구와 레바논 헤즈볼라와의 전쟁에 돌파구가 절실히 필요합니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 27 September, 2024

I emailed this portion last. However I had received some new prayer requests since last week and we have posted new Podcasts and Mind Candy videos since then.

In addition the situation in Israel is become more difficult. The Army has started a new military operation named "Northern Arrows", this offensive, targets Hezbollah's military infrastructure focusing on missiles, drones and rocket launching capabilities. 11 months of a ping pong of shelling across the boarders with aprox 150,000 persons displaced.

Please pray for Shalom. we desire to live in shalom in the land of Israel without fear of our neighbors tunneling and arming living rooms and basements with rockets and missiles for the purpose of attacking Israel.

Please print out Psalms 121:4 and keep it in your pocket this week. As you reach for your keys take it out and remember to pray for Shalom over Israel.

Behold, he that keepeth Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep. (Psalms 121)

Here are the readings for this next Shabbat in all the synagogues (without the text from the New Testament reading—which is only read in messianic congregations).

The Torah portion is a double portion - Nitzavim-Vayelech, from Deuteronomy 29:9 – 31:30.

The reading from the Prophet's "Haftarah" will be from Isaiah 61:10-63:9.

One reason this reading from Isaiah 61 is significant is that Yeshua read it in the Synagogue in Nazareth when he went home to visit his parents, Joseph and Mary. Typically, the reading of the Haftarah (from the Prophets) was given to honor someone with a birthday or a celebration. Since this was the reading given to Yeshua when he visited his family in Nazareth, it might be a hint pointing to the date of his birth around and close to the Feast of Trumpets (then and now called Rosh Hashanah.).

We also have an extended reading of this next Shabbat from the New Testament. We will be reading from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24, the last chapter of Luke, which is also full of very interesting and important content: Luke 24:1-43.

Here are a few observations from Deuteronomy chapter 29:9 – 31:30. I have chosen these observations because they have clear and immediate implications for Jewish and non-Jewish disciples of Christ in our day and age. (Please note that I didn't mention implications for Christians. The reason is simple: Christians have more flavors than 1000 times the ice cream flavors of Baskin Robbins. I find it hard to address my Christian brothers because the denominations are so different from one another, and they all call themselves Christians. However, in the whole New Testament, there is not one Apostle or a cousin of an Apostle who said, "I am a Christian!"

In Acts 11:26, in Antioch of Syria, the pagans called the Disciples of Yeshua "Christians!" None of the disciples ever said, "I am a Christian." However, I will take Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, and give you the texts of how Paul identified himself in the letters to the different churches.

Acts 21:39, "But Paul said, "I am a Jew from Tarsus, in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city; and I implore you, permit me to speak to the people."

Acts 22:3, "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.

Philippians 3:4-5, "I more so: circumcised the eighth day of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;"

The divisions in the Christian world only serve one extremely questionable character, Satan himself. The Lord is the Lord of ONE Community (church), identified with different names but is not divided and never followed Martin Luther, John Wesley, Meno, or John the Baptist. Here is how the community of Yeshua's followers identified itself in the New Testament:

In the New Testament, followers of (Yeshua) Jesus were referred to by various names and descriptions. Here are some of the key terms and their references:

1. Disciples (the most popular name and used the most times.) – The earliest term used to describe followers of Jesus. Matthew 28:19, Acts 6:1

2. Believers – Used to refer to those who have faith in Jesus. Acts 5:14, 1 Timothy 4:12

3. Saints – This term emphasizes the holiness and sanctification of the followers. Romans 1:7, Ephesians 1:1, Philippians 1:1.

4. Brothers/Brethren – Followers of Jesus saw themselves as part of a family of faith. Acts 9:30, 1 Corinthians 15:6, Hebrews 2:11

5. Followers of "The Way" is A term used to describe the early Jewish movement of the disciples of Jesus as the way to live pleasing to God. Acts 9:2, Acts 19:9, Acts 24:14

6. Servants (or Slaves) of Christ – This term emphasizes the submission to the will of Jesus. Romans 1:1, Philippians 1:1, 2 Peter 1:1

7. Children of God** – Followers of Jesus were also identified as being adopted into God's family. John 1:12, Romans 8:16, 1 John 3:1.

These names reflect various aspects of the identity, purpose, and community relationship of believers with Christ and each other.

Now, we go to the Torah portion from Deuteronomy 29:9. In our synagogue in Jerusalem, we read from a handwritten scroll of the Torah. We roll it each year at the end of the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkoth) from one end to the other. The scroll is made from Goat Skin, a proximal 40-meter-long scroll. The weight of the scroll can be between 15 kilograms, the average weight of a good scroll written on proper sheets of a young goat, cured and prepared and made for a scribe to write by hand with calligraphy letter after letter with special ink and typically with a feather pen. As the year progresses, one side of the scroll becomes fatter, and the other becomes skinnier.

Last Shabbat in the congregation, it was clear that we were getting to the end of the year and that soon we would spend time in the congregation during the service to roll the scroll back to the beginning, back to Genesis chapter 1. It is not a physically easy task for anyone, but it would be tough for an old and sick man like me.

In my life, there are very few things that I could start over from the beginning. The Lord has used me as I define myself, as a donkey, the Donkey of the Messiah. Wherever I went and whatever I did, I took the Messiah with me and shared him as best I could with anyone who would hear me and give me a chance to share. My good fortune is that in many places around the world, this donkey didn't do a lot of Braying but did a whole lot of praying! The Lord has used this one-eye Jew from Jerusalem in 50 countries. In several of these countries, there are local congregations that follow the Restoration of the Early Church without being Protestants protesting about anything, but reporting what God is doing in the history of modern Israel and how God is fulfilling the promises that He made to Moses and Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos and all the promises made in the Torah and the Prophets are in the process of being fulfilled. I say all the promises, including those made in the New Testament and Revelation. I hope to see these fulfilled before I fellowship with Peter Paul, Mary, and maybe Elijah and Elisha. I like Elijah and Elisha as much and maybe a little more than some of these very lovely and gentle prophets who were sitting in their gardens and criticizing the Kings and the Priests but not so often the wives of the Kings and the Priests.

Our reading on Shabbat will start from Deuteronomy chapter 29:9. Still, I would like to start from chapter 29:1. The reason for this is simple verse 1 of Deuteronomy 29 is the revelation of this book Deuteronomy – in Latin, "The Second giving of the Torah." (The Law).

"These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb." (Deuteronomy 29:1 NKJV).

The first giving of the Torah (The Law) was at the mountain of Sinai (Horeb), and now the second is in the land of Moab just before they enter Canaan. This verse is of great importance for our understanding of the Torah, specifically God's right to change, modify, and remand what was given 40 years earlier. Religious thinking is petrified. Generally speaking, God's revelation, although written on stone in Sinai, was still alive and kicking. We have several examples of God changing the Torah and remanding some commandments, and such changes are of significant importance in the prophets. Here are some examples from the holiest text in the Torah, spoken from the mouth of God and written on stone by the finger of God.

The Ten Commandments are recorded twice in the Bible, once in **Exodus 20:1-17** and again in **Deuteronomy 5:6-21**. While they are fundamentally the same, some slight variations in wording, emphasis, and additional details exist. Here's a comparison of the two versions:

First Commandment: No Other Gods**

Exodus 20:3: "You shall have no other gods before me."

Deuteronomy 5:7: "You shall have no other gods before me."

Both passages are identical in this commandment.

Second Commandment: No Idols

Exodus 20:4-6**: "You shall not make for yourself a carved image... You shall not bow down to them or serve them... for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God... showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."

Deuteronomy 5:8-10: Similar wording but with a slight emphasis on punishment and love: "I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children... but showing steadfast love..."

The key difference is in the emphasis in Deuteronomy on "visiting the iniquity" and "showing steadfast love" with more clarity on the generational consequences.

Third Commandment: Not Taking God's Name in Vain

Exodus 20:7: "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."

Deuteronomy 5:11: Same wording as Exodus.

This commandment is the same.

Fourth Commandment: Remember the Sabbath

Exodus 20:8-11: "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy... For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth... and rested the seventh day."

Deuteronomy 5:12-15: "Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy... You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out... therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day."

Deuteronomy adds a historical reason for keeping the Sabbath (reminding the people of their liberation from slavery in Egypt), while Exodus focuses on the creation account as the reason for rest.

Fifth Commandment: Honor Your Father and Mother

Exodus 20:12: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

Deuteronomy 5:16: "Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you..."

Deuteronomy adds the phrase "that it may go well with you," extending the promise of well-being and longevity.

Sixth Commandment: Do Not Murder

Exodus 20:13**: "You shall not murder."

Deuteronomy 5:17: "You shall not murder."

Identical wording.

Seventh Commandment: Do Not Commit Adultery

Exodus 20:14**: "You shall not commit adultery."

Deuteronomy 5:18: "You shall not commit adultery."

Identical wording.

Eighth Commandment: Do Not Steal

Exodus 20:15: "You shall not steal."

Deuteronomy 5:19: "You shall not steal."

Identical wording.

Ninth Commandment: Do Not Bear False Witness

Exodus 20:16**: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

Deuteronomy 5:20: "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Identical wording.

Tenth Commandment: Do Not Covet:

Exodus 20:17: "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."

Deuteronomy 5:21: "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's."

Deuteronomy changes the order, placing the "wife" first and adding "field" to the list of things not to covet.

We could attribute these minor changes to Moses's being 40 years older; his mind might have dementia, and he just forgot some of the phraseology. But we all believe that God's Holy Spirit was with Moses and would have protected him from forgetting.

On the other hand, we could say that God Himself made some minor changes in this, the holiest text in the Bible. He wanted that generation that spent 40 years in the wilderness of Sinai to know that He created the heavens and the earth in six days and rested on the seventh Day.

God wanted to remind Israel that when they were enslaved in Egypt, they didn't have the Shabbat to rest and refresh their souls.

God wanted to let the children know that if they honor their parents, they will receive the blessing of well-being from God!

In the 10th commandment, God placed the wife first and added the field later when He commanded us not to covet. This is interesting because one of the big problems in civilization today and probably has been in history is the inside-the-family issues.

God has the right to change the Torah, and we have several examples, like the father who had seven daughters and no sons, and only sons could inherit their father's property under the Torah given in Mount Sinai.

Numbers 26:33: “Now Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, had no sons but daughters, and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.”

Num. 27:1 “Then came the daughters of Zelophehad the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, from the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph; and these were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.”

Moses raised the issue with God, and God saw that this law was unjust and changed it so that daughters could actually inherit their father's property.

Another example is from Jeremiah 31:28-30 (and it has a much more detailed example in Ezekiel chapter 18)

"And it shall come to pass, that as I have watched over them to pluck up, to break down, to throw down, to destroy, and to afflict, so I will watch over them to build and to plant, says the LORD. In those days they shall say no more: "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children's teeth are set on edge.' But every one shall die for his own iniquity; every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge." (Jeremiah 31:28-30 NKJV)

Read from Jeremiah 31: 28 – 37 and see that Israel, the Jewish nation, and all those that through the cross have been grafted into the good fruit-bearing natural olive tree need to stand with Israel. Especially for those of us who are disciples of Christ and fellow partakers of the grace of God that is supplied by the blood of Yeshua, our Messiah. Don't forget that Yeshua is returning to Jerusalem and to the community of Jewish disciples of Yeshua, which will enable us to continue teaching and preaching to Jews and non-Jews that Yeshua is real and returning for His bride.

The lessons I have chosen to present from this Shabbat's reading of the Torah and the prophets are basic but important because they are neglected in the preaching and teaching that one gets in the run-of-the-mill church. Most churches' agenda is not to teach the Bible or their members how to study and think for themselves. The messages are canned. The tuna is best fresh right out of the sea, just after it is caught and fresh. What I have seen and heard most of my life from the bench sitting upfront to see better and hear better is that the preachers were good messages with an agenda. God's Word is to promote, sell, and encourage the members to 'DO SOMETHING,' 'GIVE SOMETHING,' and 'BUY SOMETHING.' The idea that brothers and sisters need to be equipped and trained for a life of battle and defense and victory over the world and against the spiritual challenges and moral challenges and spiritual challenges that life on this earth presents us almost daily is not the main agenda of most congregations in most evangelical denominations and non-denominational denominations.

God bless you all. Please pray for and stand with Israel. Israel as a nation is still high on God's agenda, and the future of the Body of Christ is connected with Jerusalem and with the nation of Israel. Paul states this clearly in Ephesians 2: 10 – 18:

"You were without God and without covenants and outside of the community of Israel and without hope."

But now through that Jew born in Bethlehem, Israel, and who died and raised from the dead in Jerusalem, and is returning to Jerusalem, makes you dear Christian brothers and sisters connected to Jerusalem whether you like it or not. You will need Jerusalem. So, it would be wise and best for you now to stand with Israel and with your Jewish and Arab brothers in Israel and start by making it a daily habit to pray for Jerusalem and the peace of Jerusalem as the Psalm says and receive peace from God and maybe prosperity like your translation says. Receiving peace is, in my opinion, more important than prosperity.

God bless all who pray for us, Israel, and Jerusalem. Israel desperately needs a breakthrough in this war with Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.

When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 Yehuda is back into military service next week. Pray for his safe return home.

 Yehuda Levi is in the hospital with stage 4 lymphoma for the fourth week. We ask for prayers for his family. Especially the difficult time that Elisheva is experiencing. A reminder - in past JPL (in 2010) Yehuda is the father of Major Emmanuel Levi , who died in a tragic training exercise.

new Talked with dad today and he was feeling pain in the back more than usual. Please lift him up in prayer to give him strength. Marcia's health needs have not changed and we pray for strengthening her health and memory.

 Ilana Ahijervie is a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurkey.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Hannah suffering from Migraine Headaches. Miriam is a dear sister old age dementia.

 Pray for Daniel S. and his children.

 Pray for Gary, our dear leader in the Ro’eh Israel congregation, and his health, as well as for his wife Melanie and their family.

 Pray for Um Mahmud Abu-Eid, Jimmy Abu-Eid, and all of the family. This is a dear family of old friends that needs healing and wisdom for the children and for their work.

 Please pray for the Romero family, who live deep in the Negev desert. It is hot there, and they are far from our congregation, and we miss them.

 Mauno Lemponen has been diagnosed with cancer in advanced stages. We are asking for Gods Will to be done, giving him healthy days with family—prayers for Hilka, Miika, and Ester, who support each other.

 Pray for Keijo and Salme, our dear partners and fellow workers in God’s flock. Both Keijo and Salme have some challenging heart issues.

 Pray for Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami, our dear sisters.

 Pray for Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia, Victor, Aaron Tani, and Hillel.

In Brazil:

 Max Rodrigues. his mothers health issues. she has stomach problems that have yet to be diagnosed. The hospital is taking a long time to complete tests. Pray for her salvation. Pray for Max as he navigates a challenging period in his life. He has confidence Gods victory in his life.

 Pray for the Congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges ahead of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.

 Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 Pray for a dear sister named Claudia Rita Souze Arau. She has cancer and needs God’s healing hands to touch her with healing.

 Pray for Fatima Maria Docarmo Guimararaes - pray for her health and her granddaughters’ twin babies.

 Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker is suffering from back problems.

 Aratuza de Oliveira and his wife. Pray for their 3-year-old child, Caique de Oliveira Becker, who has severe problems with his eyes, and ask the Lord to give healing to his eyes.

 Gurli has reached out and asked for prayers to deal with persecution they are facing. However the request for family members to know Yeshua is a heavy concern for a mother and father. When our influence is struggling the prayers of the body strength us.

In the United States of America:

 new Aida Ramirez is 98 years old and suffering from first stages of dementia. Also her daughter Aida Gonzalez needs prayer for strength and Gods grace and protection as she is taking care of her mother.

 update Pat R the returned for a brief period to deal with an infection and is now home.

 update Sarah Sacks is having surgery and we are praying for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

 Elisheva is studying for passing Financial certifications in September. Please pray for calmness in her studies and confidence in passing her exams next month. also for health and her household.

 Jerry Rogers - a long time prayer warier and supporter in Dallas has been diagnosed with cancer. he is starting treatments and we lift up his doctors and medical team & family in prayer.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

 update Bill C. is steady in his treatments and doing well. I received wonderful news that his cancer markers continue to trend to the normal states. A true answer to prayers. Please pray a thanks to God and continue to ask for success of the treatments.

 update Juli's white count needs to improve. Please continue to pray for the daughter of Bill Culwell, her white count is low after the last round of treatments. Please pray for God to provider her body healing.

 Brother Philip Slate and his wife. She is suffering from several physical and mental health challenges.

 Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.

 Jonathan Bernis is continuing recovery from a liver transplant. Please pray for Elisangela and the girls and the doctors and nurses attending our dear brother Jonathan Bernis.

 Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.

 Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.

 Lift for blessing and healing Jonathan B., his wife Aviva, their new baby, his mother, and his brother Daniel.

 Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

 Also, pray for Ilana Avramov, who is married to my cousin Nissim and lives in New York City. Ilana has fallen and is now in rehab, learning how to walk again. We pray for her full recovery. She and Nissim both need our prayers.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
