요셉 슐람, 이스라엘 예루살렘에서 안식일 토라 포션 “에모르”: 레위기 21:1~24:23, 선지자의 글에서 읽는 하프타라: 에스겔 44:15-31, 신약성경에서 읽는 말씀: 베드로전서 2:1-17. 토라 포션 “에모르”의 이 장들 중 가장 중요한 이슈는 성막에서 하나님을 섬기는 제사장들에게 주는 규칙입니다. 이 규칙들은 코헨(제사장)이 아버지, 어머니, 형제, 자매 외의 친족의 장례식조차 가지 말 것을 규율하는 것들입니다. 제사장의 의복도 구체적으로 기술되어 있고, 그들의 머리에 뭘 바르는 방식도 구체적으로 기술되어 있고, 무엇을 먹어야 하는지도 구체적으로 기술되어 있습니다. 하나님의 성전의 거룩한 구역에서 하나님을 섬기는 것은 매우 진지한 일입니다. 제사장들과 그들의 섬김에 대한 이런 규칙들은 우리가 정말 잘 이해하지 못하는 것인데요, 왜냐하면 우리는 아주 비-종교적인 세상에서 아주 비-종교적인 패러다임으로 우리 공동체를 섬기기 때문입니다. 사실, 모든 개신교, 특히 “성령”을 강조하며 하나님의 영으로 충만한 오순절운동은 하나님의 종이 된다는 진지한 결말이 없습니다. 누가복음에서 예슈아께서 주신 원리는 하나님을 섬기고자 하는 우리 모든 사람 안에 하나님께 대한 두려움을 주는 것입니다: “알지 못하고 맞을 일을 행한 종은 적게 맞으리라 무릇 많이 받은 자에게는 많이 요구할 것이요 많이 맡은 자에게는 많이 달라 할 것이니라.” (누가복음 12:48) 우리 모두는 마음에는 원이로되 육신이 약하다는 것을 알지만, 이 원리를 훨씬 더 진지하게 받아들여야 할 것입니다. 이 원리는 금전적 소송과 가족과 일정과 국가 권위와의 관계와 세금과 우리 삶의 모든 면을 포함하고 있습니다. 저는 여러분이 레위기를 읽으면서 전능하신 하나님을 섬기는 것이 얼마나 진지한 일인지 보시기를 권해드립니다. 이번 안식일 말씀에 있는 두 번째는 여호와의 절기, 예슈아와 그분의 사도들이 지키셨고, 완전히 유대인만 있었던 것이 아니며 고린도 시의 재무담당관 에라스도 같은 비-유대인 지체도 있었던 고린도교회 등 다른 사람들에게 지키도록 권한 성경의 절기 목록입니다. 고린도에는 시 재무담당관 에라스투스(에라스도)라는 이름이 있는 아주 큰 (길이 5 피트, 너비 2 피트 이상) 대리석 명판이 있습니다. 그는 고린도 시에 건물을 하나 기증했습니다. 제가 1965년에 고린도를 처음 방문했을 때, 그 명판은 근자에 발견된 것으로 아름다웠습니다. 작년에 저는 고린도에 다시 갔었는데요, 에라스도의 명판은 기후에 그대로 노출된 채 밖에 있었고 글자들은 거의 읽을 수 없을 정도가 되었습니다. 그렇게 귀중한 고고학적 유물을 관리감독해야 하는 당국의 태만함은 형사 처벌감입니다. 이번 안식일에 읽는 신약성경은 베드로전서 2:1-7*입니다. 이것은 돌을 다루는 구약성경의 몇 구절을 근거로 한 아주 유명한 “미드라쉬”(랍비의 교훈)를 담고 있는 아주 중요한 본문입니다. 아주 오래되고, 유명하고, 중요한 이 미드라쉬는 다음 말씀을 근거로 하고 있습니다: “건축자가 버린 돌이 집 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되었나니 이는 여호와께서 행하신 것이요 우리 눈에 기이한 바로다 이 날은 여호와께서 정하신 것이라 이 날에 우리가 즐거워하고 기뻐하리로다.” (시 118:22–24). 이 미드라쉬에 베드로는 돌을 언급하고 있는 일련의 성경을 사용하고 있습니다. 에베소서 2:21-22에도, 메시아의 몸을 건물(당연히 돌로 지어진)로 묘사하려 똑같은 미드라쉬의 결론이 사용되었습니다. 이 미드라쉬의 가장 오래된 원전은 메시아의 도래와 이스라엘의 구원을 대비하기 위해 유대광야로 나간 에세네 공동체의 쿰란 문서입니다. 베드로는 여기에 이사야 28:16 에서도 똑같은 미드라쉬를 가져옵니다, “… 보라 내가 한 돌을 시온에 두어 기초를 삼았노니 곧 시험한 돌이요 귀하고 견고한 기촛돌이라 그것을 믿는 이는 다급하게 되지 아니하리로다.” * 그러므로 모든 악독과 모든 기만과 외식과 시기와 모든 비방하는 말을 버리고 갓난 아기들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 그로 말미암아 너희로 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라 너희가 주의 인자하심을 맛보았으면 그리하라 사람에게는 버린 바가 되었으나 하나님께는 택하심을 입은 보배로운 산 돌이신 예수께 나아가 너희도 산 돌 같이 신령한 집으로 세워지고 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님이 기쁘게 받으실 신령한 제사를 드릴 거룩한 제사장이 될지니라 성경에 기록되었으되 보라 내가 택한 보배로운 모퉁잇돌을 시온에 두노니 그를 믿는 자는 부끄러움을 당하지 아니하리라 하였으니 그러므로 믿는 너희에게는 보배이나 믿지 아니하는 자에게는 건축자들이 버린 그 돌이 모퉁이의 머릿돌이 되고 또한 부딪치는 돌과 걸려 넘어지게 하는 바위가 되었다 하였느니라 (벧전 2:1-8상) 사도 바울도 로마서 9:33에서 똑같은 미드라쉬를 사용합니다. 이것이 중요한 이유는 요세푸스 플라비우스 같은 사도들이 쿰란 공동체의 가르침에 익숙했다는 것을 보여주기 때문입니다. 베드로도 쿰란 문서에서처럼 이사야 8:14의 세 번째 문서를 사용하고 있습니다, “그가 성소가 되시리라 그러나 이스라엘의 두 집에는 걸림돌과 걸려 넘어지는 반석이 되실 것이며 예루살렘 주민에게는 함정과 올무가 되시리니.” (사 8:14). 여기에 우리가 가지고 있는 것은 전통적인 랍비들의 방식, 즉 하나님의 말씀에서 똑같은 주제를 다루고 있는 본문들을 엮어 각 원전의 원래의 배경과는 서로 다른 문맥에서 예언적 결론을 도출하는 방식입니다. 저는 개인적으로 이 방법을 좋아하고 베드로가 결코 무지한 갈릴리 어부가 아니었다는 것을 보아 좋지만, 토라와 선지서를 연구하는 학자로서 저는 신‧구약 중간기 헬라어 및 히브리어 유대 문헌을 더하고 싶습니다. 저를 매혹시키는 또 다른 점은 베드로가 이사야 8:14을 인용할 때 그는 예루살렘을 말하고 있는 마지막 부분을 빼먹고 있다는 것입니다. 그 이유는 분명합니다. 그는 이 편지를 “본도, 갈라디아, 갑바도기아, 아시아와 비두니아에 흩어진 나그네”에게 보내고 있기 때문입니다. 베드로가 전달하고 싶었던 메시지는 예루살렘 사람들에게 하는 것이 아니라, 이스라엘 밖에 살고 있는 사람들에게, 어쩌면 박해 때문에 이스라엘 밖으로 다녔던 유대인 형제들에게, 어쩌면 근자에 개종한 비-유대인들에게 하는 것입니다. 물론 이 미드라쉬는 메시아와 관련된 것입니다. 왜냐하면 이 미드라쉬의 근거 말씀이 시편 118:21-27이기 때문입니다. 이것은 분명히 온 건물을 붙들고 있는 모퉁이돌의 버려짐으로 시작하여 “호산나와 하쯜리카나” “‘우리를 구원하소서’와 ‘우리에게 형통을 주소서!’”로 끝나는 메시아와 관련된 말씀입니다. 이것이 예슈아께서 나귀를 타고 예루살렘 성으로 들어오실 때 예루살렘 사람들이 운집하여 그를 메시아이며 다윗의 자손 왕으로 인식하며 노래 불렀던 것입니다! By Joseph Shulam From Jerusalem, Israel Shabbat Emor: from Leviticus 21:1 - 24:23 from the prophets The Haftarah: Ezekiel 44:15 - 44:31. And from the New Testament: 1 Peter 2: 1-17. The most significant issue in these chapters of the Emor portion of the Torah is the rules for those Priests who serve God in the Tabernacle. There are rules that forbid a Cohen (priest) to even attend a funeral of family members who are not father, or mother or brother or sister. The clothing of the priests is specified, the way they wear their hair is specified, what the eat is specified. Is a very serious work to serve God in the holy precinct of God’s temple. This rules for the priests and their service is something that we don’t really understand because we serve our communities in a very secular world and in a very secular paradigm. In fact the whole Protestant and especially the Pentecostal Movment that bandies the “Holy Spirit” and being full of the Spirit of God has not the serious consequences of being a servant of God. The principle that Yeshua give in the Gospel of Luke is something that ought to put the fear of God in every one of us who wants to serve God. This is the rule that Yeshua gives us: “But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.” (Luke 12:48 NKJV) We all know that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, but we all ought to take this principle much more seriously. This principle includes financial sues and family and time schedule and our relationship to the national authorities and the taxes and every aspect of our lives. I recommend for you to read the book of Leviticus and see what a serious thing it is to serve the Almighty God. The second thing that we have in this Shabbats’s reading, the catalog of the Feasts of the Lord, the Biblical Holidays that Yeshua and His apostles Celebrated and encouraged others to celebrate, including the congregation in Corinth that was not strictly Jewish and had non-Jewish members like Erastus the Treasurer of the City of Corinth. In Corinth there is a very big (more than 5 feed long and two feet wide marble plaque with the name of this Erastus the City Treasurer. He had donated a building for the city of Corinth. The first time that I visited Corinth in 1965, the plaque was beautiful and it was discover recently. Last year I was there in Corinth again and the plaque of Erastus was just outside open to the weather elements and the letters were almost not readable. Criminal negligence of the authorities of that are in charge of the priceless archaeological treasures. The New Testament reading this next Shabbat is from 1 Peter 2:1-7. It is a very important reading that contains a very famous “Midrash” (a rabbinical homily) based on several passages in the O.T., that deal with stones. The very old, famous and important midrash based on the following text: “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’S doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psa. 118:22–24 NKJV). In this midrash that Peter is using a chain of scriptures that have stones in them. In Ephesians 2:21-22, The conclusion of the same Midrash is used to describe the Body of the Messiah as a building (of course made of stones). The oldest source of this midrash is from Qumran from the Essene community that set out to the desert of Judea to prepare for the coming of the Messiah and the salvation of Israel. Peter brings here from the same midrash also Isaiah 28:16, “Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.” The Apostle Paul uses the same midrash in Romans 9:33. This is important because is shows that the Apostles like Josephus Flavius were families with the Qumran communities teaching. Peter also uses like in Qumran the third text from Isaiah 8:14, “He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” (Is. 8:14 NKJV). What we have here is a classical rabbinic method of making a Chain of texts from the Word of God that deal with the same topic and drawing from a prophetic conclusion in a Context different from the original settings of each of the originating texts. I personally love the method and love to see that Peter was not in any way an ignorant Galilean fisherman, but a scholar of the Torah and the prophets and I would add the inter-Testament Jewish Greek and Hebrew literature. Another point that just fascinates me is that when Peter is quoting from Isaiah 8:14, he omits the last part of the verse that is speaking of Jerusalem. The reason is clear he is sending this letter: “To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,”. The message that Peter wants do convey is not to the Jerusalemites, but to people who live outside of Israel. May be Jewish brothers who I have traveled outside of Israel because of persecution, may be non-Jews who have been recently converted. Of course this midrash is messianic because the bases of the Midrash is from Psalm 118:21-27. This is clearly a messianic text that starts with the rejection of the corner stone that holds the whole building together and ends with “Hossana and Hatzlichana” “Please save us and Please give us success!.” This is what the people of Jerusalem were singing when Yeshua came to the city riding on a donkey and they crowed recognized him as the Messiah and Son of David, the King! God bless all of you who pray for Jerusalem and for us in Jerusalem. The quarantine is almost over in Israel. There are still restrictions on where and when people can go, but traffic is back to normal and the shopping centers are opening today, and schools are open and back but not to normal yet. There is two meter space to be kept between students and they have to wear masks and wash their hands often. We are praying that the expectation of second wave of the coronavirus will not come as it is predicted by the medical community. We are praying for flights to get back to Israel and out of Israel, and tourism to resume. Like the economies of most of the world, Israel’s economic situation is not better and not worst than the USA and Europe and other countries that are still dealing with this plague. Not everything made in China is bad but for sure not everything made in china is also good. I need your prayers for my health. I thank God every day for His goodness and mercy and trust Him to restore my health so that I can continue to teach His Word. I am waiting for the final tests to come clean from cancer, but if they don’t we will deal with each problem and continue to praise and serve God. Please also keep Marcia my wife in your prayers for her health. Danah our daughter needs much prayer for her situation and so does our granddaughter Noaam. She is a wonderful young lady with many gifts, and challenges in life. Please lift Danah and Noaam in your prayers. Please keep Michelle O., in your prayers. Michelle is a young lady who has been diagnosed with Leukemia, and also has kidney stones. She needs our prayers. Pray for a dear brother Mr. Shukrey Lawrence, who is suffering from cancer and needs our prayers for strength and healing. Pray also for Lawrence Tours and the entire Tourist industry in Israel. There are no tourists and Hotels are being converted into temporary hospitals for the thousands of Coronavirus victims. The tourist industry in Israel is suffering a death blow if there is not a reasonably quick lifting of all the restrictions and the return of airports to their normal function. Please add to your prayers a special prayer for the following brothers and sisters who need divine intervention in their behalf: Angela I, Rachael and Daniel, a brother and sister who need jobs and emotional healing. There is no end in sight. Scientist around the world are working overtime to understand how this virus works and what systems in the human body it affects. There are many who believe that this virus is not a natural mutation of the Sars and Mars coronaviruses that struck our world a few years back. It seems to many that this virus is especially engineered by humans to serve the ultimate weapon to destroy the economies of the world and weaken the world powers in the West. As one can see even with one eye shut, that some of the world powers are getting stronger and doing a brisk business from the coronavirus aftershock. I am happy to see that the Chinese government is easing the quarantine in China and in Wuhan and returning slowly to business as usual. This is a good sign to other countries that it is not impossible to conquer the coronavirus.
