가장 중요한 일을 먼저 합니다! 저는 며칠 전에 헷갈려서 다음 주 안식일 토라 포션에 대해 썼었습니다. 네, 저는 여러분께서 양해해 주시기를 부탁드립니다! 여러분이 한 주 동안 다음 주 토라 포션을 깊이 생각하며 보내는 것도 이점이 있습니다. 이제 2024년 9월 21일 이번 안식일 토라 포션에 대해 쓰겠습니다.

이번 안식일 토라 포션은 “키 타보”라고 합니다. 이 토라 포션의 첫 구절입니다: “네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 기업으로 주어 차지하게 하실 땅에 네가 들어가서 거기에 거주할 때에”

이번 안식일 토라에서 읽을 부분은 신명기 26:1~29:8입니다.
선지서에서 읽을 부분은 이사야 60:1-22입니다.
복음서에서는 마태복음 4:13-24을 읽을 것입니다.

저는 토라 포션과 선지서 포션과 마태복음 말씀 중에서 어떤 것을 강조해야 할지 선택하는 것이 어렵다고 생각합니다. 이번 안식일에 읽는 모든 말씀이 아주 중요합니다. 그래서 저는 가능한 한 이것을 짧게 두루 논하도록 하겠습니다.

모세는 세 시간 남짓한 연설의 끝에 가까워지고 있고, 백만 명 넘는 백성은 요단강 동편에 서 있습니다. 이번 토라 포션에서 모세는 이 말로 시작합니다:

“네 하나님 여호와께서 네게 기업으로 주어 차지하게 하실 땅에 네가 들어가서 거기에 거주할 때에”

시내광야에서의 그 40년은 대학 교육 시기였는데요, 혹시 군사 용어로 원하신다면, 신병훈련 기간이었습니다. 계속해서 시험이 이어졌습니다. 이번 주 토라 포션 본문을 읽으면서, 제 생각은 어디로 가야 할지도 모르고 어떤 어려움을 마주하게 될지도 모르고 여행 기간이 얼마나 길지도 모르는 오합지졸 백성 때의 시절로 갔습니다. 그들은 노예였었고, 노예 민족의 심리를 가지고 있었기 때문에 하나님께서는 40년 동안 기적뿐만 아니라 믿음을 키우는 사건들이었던 일련의 시험들로 그들을 끌고 가셨습니다.

이 백성은 광야에서 태어났고 몇 시간 후면 그 땅으로 들어갑니다. 모세는 시합이 시작되기 바로 몇 분 전 마지막 지시를 내리는 풋볼 코치처럼 나아옵니다. 여기에는 모세가 이스라엘 백성에게 주는 몇 가지 지시사항이 있습니다.

모세의 리더십은 민주적인 것이 아니었다는 것을 기억하십시오. 지금 모세는 그가 이 백성을 계속 이끌지 않으리라는 것을 압니다. 그는 이 백성과 그들을 이끌 자들이 그들 생애에 처음으로 다른 생활방식에 들어가게 될 것이라는 것을 압니다. 이 백성 대부분은 시내광야에서의 방랑생활만을 압니다. 그들은 하늘에서 내리는 만나를 먹고 하나님께서 보내주신 메추라기를 먹었습니다. 그들이 마신 물은 반석에서 난 물이었고, 아말렉과 전쟁을 하기는 했으되, 하나님께서 그들의 편에서 싸우셨고, 승리는 기적이었습니다. 이제, 이 모든 것이 바뀌려 하고 있습니다.

모세가 이 백성에게 지우는 첫 번째 사항은 두 가지 비상한 이슈에 대한 것이었습니다. 곧바로 떠오르는 생각은 이 백성에게 필요한 첫 번째는 두려워하지 말라는 격려일 것이라는 생각일 것입니다. 하나님께서 그들에게 복 주실 것이고, 그들은 하나님께서 그들의 조상 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 약속하신 그 땅을 향유할 것이라는 말을 듣는 것이요. 그런데, 아니었습니다! 너희가 그 땅에 들어가서 첫 번째로 해야 하는 일은 오순절을 계산하고 그 절기를 준비하여 그 땅에서의 첫 소산을 가져와 그것들을 나의 제단에 놓으라는 것이었습니다.

여러분은 모세가 그들에게 그들이 그 땅에 들어가서 어떤 일을 마주하게 될 것인지 가르쳐줄 것이라고 생각할 것입니다. 그런데, 그렇지 않았습니다! 모세는 이 마지막 무대이자 기회를 전쟁과 적군과 도전들에 대한 지시로 엽니다.

이것은 우리에게 두 가지를 보여줍니다:

1) 오순절에는 세 가지 중요한 면이 있습니다: 추수한 밀을 거두어들임, 여름 과실 시즌 종결, 시내산에서 토라를 수여한 절기.

2) 하나님께 첫 소산과 최고의 소산을 드리라. 성경에서 감사를 표하는 유일한 방법은 드리는 것입니다. “감사합니다” 말하는 것은 소용없습니다. 첫 농작물, 첫 과실, 가장 먼저 가장 좋은 감사 표현을 드린다는 것은 여러분을 죄된 삶과 소망없는 삶과 영적 굶주림에서 꺼내어 물질적 부(富) 가운데로 들어가게 하신 여호와 하나님께 유일하고 특별한 것을 드리는 것, 헌사하는 것입니다.

그러나 드리는 것은 할 수 있는 가장 힘든 일이 아닙니다. 모세가 이스라엘 자손에게 알려주는 오순절에 가장 도전이 되는 일은 제사장 앞에서 해야 하는 진술입니다.

저는 이 점을 아주 분명하게 하고 싶습니다: 백성은 주님께 헌납하여 거룩하게 할 과일과 채소 광주리 – 최고 중의 최고 – 흠 없고 신선한 농작물을 가지고 예루살렘 주님의 집으로 옵니다. 제사 드리는 자는 행복하고 자랑스러워할 만하고 만족해할 만하다고 느낍니다. 그는 군중을 둘러보며 그들이 그의 노고의 결실을 얼마나 높이 평가하는지 볼 것입니다. 그는 사람들이 그가 얼마나 재능이 있고 후하여 그의 최고의 것을 주님께 헌납하러 예루살렘에 오는지 높이 평가했으면 합니다. 제사장은 어깨에 제물 광주리를 지고 온 이 제사드리는 자를 맞아 환영합니다.

이 제사드리는 자는 드리면서 이 말로 시작합니다:

“그 때의 제사장에게 나아가 그에게 이르기를 내가 오늘 당신의 하나님 여호와께 아뢰나이다 내가 여호와께서 우리에게 주시겠다고 우리 조상들에게 맹세하신 땅에 이르렀나이다 할 것이요”

첫 과일로 가득 찬 광주리는 제사장에게 그리고 궁극적으로는 하나님께 드립니다. 이 간단한 원리는 드리는 자에게도 주님을 대신하여 이것을 받는 제사장에게도 아주 중요합니다. 제사장들은 이 헌물을 제물로 드리고 나서 이 헌물을 즐겁게 먹을 것입니다. 그러나 이 헌물은 주님께 드리는 것입니다.

목사들과 설교자들은 사람들이 교회에 드리는 헌금이 교회의 손을 빌어 교회의 일을 하고 복음을 전하고 가난한 사람들과 고아와 과부를 돌보는 교회 행정에 드리는 것임을 이해해야 합니다. 사람들이 낸 것은 거룩하게 구별되어 무엇보다 공동체의 필요를 위해 사용되어야 합니다. 하나님의 양 떼의 목자인 설교자는 에스겔 34장에 있는 말씀을 기억해야 합니다!

에스겔 34:1-10

“여호와의 말씀이 내게 임하여 이르시되 2 인자야 너는 이스라엘 목자들에게 예언하라 그들 곧 목자들에게 예언하여 이르기를 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 자기만 먹는 이스라엘 목자들은 화 있을진저 목자들이 양 떼를 먹이는 것이 마땅하지 아니하냐 3 너희가 살진 양을 잡아 그 기름을 먹으며 그 털을 입되 양 떼는 먹이지 아니하는도다 4 너희가 그 연약한 자를 강하게 아니하며 병든 자를 고치지 아니하며 상한 자를 싸매 주지 아니하며 쫓기는 자를 돌아오게 하지 아니하며 잃어버린 자를 찾지 아니하고 다만 포악으로 그것들을 다스렸도다 5 목자가 없으므로 그것들이 흩어지고 흩어져서 모든 들짐승의 밥이 되었도다 6 내 양 떼가 모든 산과 높은 멧부리에마다 유리되었고 내 양 떼가 온 지면에 흩어졌으되 찾고 찾는 자가 없었도다 7 그러므로 목자들아 여호와의 말씀을 들을지어다 8 주 여호와의 말씀에 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세하노라 내 양 떼가 노략거리가 되고 모든 들짐승의 밥이 된 것은 목자가 없기 때문이라 내 목자들이 내 양을 찾지 아니하고 자기만 먹이고 내 양 떼를 먹이지 아니하였도다 9 그러므로 너희 목자들아 여호와의 말씀을 들을지어다 10 주 여호와께서 이같이 말씀하시되 내가 목자들을 대적하여 내 양 떼를 그들의 손에서 찾으리니 목자들이 양을 먹이지 못할 뿐 아니라 그들이 다시는 자기도 먹이지 못할지라 내가 내 양을 그들의 입에서 건져내어서 다시는 그 먹이가 되지 아니하게 하리라”

이 말씀에서는 반복적으로 여호와의 말씀 “내 양 떼”라는 말을 사용하고 있습니다. 이스라엘은 하나님의 양 떼이며(현재), 양 떼였고(과거), 이 세상이 존재하는 한 계속해서 하나님의 양 떼가 될 것입니다(미래). 새 하늘과 새 땅에서도 계속 하나님의 양 떼가 될 것입니다.

이 말이 사실인 이유가 있습니다. 하나님께서 이스라엘 집과 유다 집과 새 언약을 맺겠다고 선포하신 직후에 오는 예레미야 31:35-37 말씀 때문입니다. 제게는 하나님께서 그리스도의 교회나 침례교회나 오순절파 교회나 그 어떤 이른바 “거듭난” 교파 교회와 새 언약을 맺으시는 것이 아니라는 점이 매우 흥미롭습니다. 그것은 언제나 이스라엘과 맺으시는 것입니다. 이스라엘이 지리적으로 남북으로 나뉘고 예언적으로 분열되었을 때조차 에스겔의 예언에 의하면 하나님께서 이 둘을 하나로 만드시고 다시 연결시키십니다.

9월 21일 안식일에 읽는 이번 토라 포션에서 지적하고 싶은 또 다른 점은 주님께 첫 소산 제물을 가져오는 각 사람에게 요구하는 것입니다. 그는 제사장과 주님 앞에 진술해야 합니다. 큰 무리가 모이고 제사드리는 각 사람은 첫 과실 광주리를 어깨에 지고 그의 진짜 참된 정체성을 진술할 준비를 하고 있습니다.

이 원리는 아주 중요합니다. 특히 우리가 공동체(교회)에 돈이나 시간이나 봉사를 드릴 때 그렇습니다. 이것은 아주 겸손하게 해야 합니다. 제사를 드리는 자가 그의 가장 좋은 과일과 채소를 담은 광주리를 제사장에게 드리면서 진술해야 하는 말은 이렇습니다:

“내 조상은 방랑하는 아람 사람으로서 애굽에 내려가 거기에서 소수로 거류하였더니 거기에서 크고 강하고 번성한 민족이 되었는데 6 애굽 사람이 우리를 학대하며 우리를 괴롭히며 우리에게 중노동을 시키므로 7 우리가 우리 조상의 하나님 여호와께 부르짖었더니 여호와께서 우리 음성을 들으시고 우리의 고통과 신고와 압제를 보시고 8 여호와께서 강한 손과 편 팔과 큰 위엄과 이적과 기사로 우리를 애굽에서 인도하여 내시고 9 이곳으로 인도하사 이 땅 곧 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 주셨나이다 10 여호와여 이제 내가 주께서 내게 주신 토지 소산의 맏물을 가져왔나이다”

여러분은 이스라엘 민족의 조상 아브라함이 방랑하는 아람 사람이었다고 진술합니다. 여기에서 원리는 주님 앞에 여러분 가문의 부(富)와 혈통을 놓지 말라는 것입니다. 여러분 자신을 낮추고 겸손하게 하나님과 공동체에 드리라는 것입니다. 드리는 것은 의무이며 명령이고, 아주 겸손하게 해야 하는 것이며, 복음주의 교회들에서 주님께서 비밀리에 하라고 명하신 대로 행해져야 하고 가르쳐져야 하는 것입니다. 드리는 것은 손에 봉투를 들고 줄 서서 교회 앞편에 있는 커다란 나무 헌금통을 향해 나아가 그 봉투를 넣으며 대놓고 보이게 하는 것이 아닙니다. 미국 달라스에서 “열방을 위한 그리스도” 사역 단체를 설립한 프리다 린제이 자매님은 제가 오랜 세월 개인적으로 알고 지내는 특권과 축복을 누린 최고의 기금 모금자 중 한 명인데요, 그녀는 앞에서 언급한 나무 헌금통에 든 봉투 중 최소 10%에서 15%는 빈 것이라고 말한 적이 있습니다. 사람들은 교회가 그들이 헌금하는 것을 보기를 원할 뿐, 그들이 낸 봉투는 빈 것이라는 것입니다.

제사드리는 각 사람은 주님께 드릴 햇 과일, 채소, 그 외 맛있는 것이 풍성한 큰 광주리를 가지고 왔습니다. 이 사람은 그의 제물을 내어놓기 전에 자신이 방랑하는 이전에 노예였던 사람, 방랑하는 아람 사람(이방인)이었음을 선언합니다. 이스라엘 사람으로서 주님의 집에 와서 후하게 드리려는 바로 그 순간에 그는 자신이 단지 방랑하는 아람 사람의 후손으로서 하나님께서 종살이에서 구해내신 자라는 실제 사실을 내놓습니다.

우리는 신명기 26장의 이 말씀에서 무엇을 배울 수 있습니까?

1. 우리는 가장 좋은 것, 우리 노동의 모든 과실 중 가장 좋은 것을 하나님께 드려야 합니다. 모세의 법에 따라 우리는 10%를 내야 할 의무가 있지만, 이것은 최소에 대한 권장 사항이지 우리가 후하게 드릴 때의 한계가 아닙니다.

2. 바울 서신은 모두 모금 편지입니다. 그는 교회들에서 돈을 거둬서 역시 같은 절기인 샤부옷(오순절)에 예루살렘으로 가져왔습니다. 바울이 예루살렘에 왔을 때 소아시아 교회들에서 거둔 돈을 어디에 드렸을까요? 그는 그것을 성전에, 산헤드린(예루살렘의 고등법원) 앞에서 변론에 의하면, 그의 민족에게 드렸습니다. 

사도행전 22:3

“나는 유대인으로 길리기아 다소에서 났고 이 성에서 자라 가말리엘의 문하에서 우리 조상들의 율법의 엄한 교훈을 받았고 오늘 너희 모든 사람처럼 하나님께 대하여 열심이 있는 자라”

사도행전 24:17-18

“여러 해 만에 내가 내 민족을 구제할 것과 제물을 가지고 와서 18 드리는 중에 내가 결례를 행하였고 모임도 없고 소동도 없이 성전에 있는 것을 그들이 보았나이다 그러나 아시아로부터 온 어떤 유대인들이 있었으니”

사도행전 24:17은 로마 펠리스 총독 앞에서의 진술입니다. 바울이 비-유대인 일곱 제자와 함께 제물을 드리러 예루살렘으로 왔다는 것을 기억하십시오.

3. 그리스와 소아시아(터키)에서 바울의 사역은 예루살렘에 있는 유대인을 위해 모금하는 것이었고, 바울은 분명하게 그가 모금한 돈으로 어떻게 했는지를 우리에게 말해주고 있습니다. 그는 그것을 그의 민족, 예루살렘에 있는 유대인 제자들에게 드렸습니다!

60년 남짓 사역하는 동안 수많은 재정 기적을 겪은 제 경험에서 말씀드리건대, 슐람 가족과 네티비야는 1981년 나르키스가(街)에 있는 이 건물 구입과 재건축과 2020년대 증축에 이르기까지 1달러도 빚진 일이 없습니다. 거의 1,000명 되는 사람들을 먹이는 하모찌 식료품 배급 프로그램 같은 저희 프로젝트는 거의 25년 동안 수혜자에게 하루 세끼를 공급해주고 있습니다. 드리는 축복은 여러분이 얼마나 많이 내는가와 관계 있는 것이 아니라, 여러분이 어떻게 내고 여러분이 낼 때 여러분의 마음에 어떤 마음이 있는가와 관계 있습니다.

“키 타보(네가 그 땅에 들어갈 때에)” 토라 포션을 읽어보시기 바랍니다! 이 토라 포션에는 더 많은 흥미로운 것이 있습니다. 유대인들이 회개하며 하나님께 용서를 구하고 간청하는 기간으로 들어가고 있는 요즘 이 말씀은 고무적입니다.

저는 예루살렘에 사는 어린 소년이었을 때 회당 집사들이 로쉬 하샤나 수주 전부터 새벽 4:30–5:00 경에 마을을 순회하며 긴 나무 막대기로 창문을 두드리며 “슬리콧, 슬리콧”(회개), “일어나 회당으로 오세요!” 외치던 것을 기억합니다.

유감스럽지만 제 부모님은 일어나 기도하러 회당에 가지 않으셨습니다. 제 아버지는 그가 말할 수 있는 18개 언어 중 하나로 한바탕 욕을 하고는 다시 주무셨습니다. 제 어머니는 “바룩(그만)!” 이라고만 말씀하셨습니다. (어머니는 영어나 히브리어가 아닌 스파라드 유대인이 말하는 라디노(유대계 스페인어)로 말씀하셨습니다.) 

요약하여, 저는 두 가지를 강조하고 싶습니다.

1) 여러분이 하나님께 드릴 때는 언제나 가장 좋은 것을 드리십시오. 가장 좋은 것이라는 것은 금액이 아닙니다. 여러분은 동전 다섯 개를 드리고도 동전 1,000개를 드린 바리새인보다 더 많이 드렸다고 칭찬 받은 과부일 수 있습니다.  

2) 드리는 것이 여러분을 하나님과 공동체 앞에 낮추는 것이어야 합니다. 신명기 26장에서 제사를 드리는 자는 자기가 방랑하는 아람 사람 아브라함의 후손 중에 있다고 말합니다. 달리 말하자면, 여러분의 자부심이나 건방진 태도를 버리고 주님 앞에 겸손히 서라는 말입니다. 하나님께서는 여러분의 마음과 아울러 여러분의 은행 계좌 잔고도 아신다는 것을 기억하십시오.

저는 다음 토라 말씀으로 이 예루살렘 기도 목록을 끝내고 싶습니다. 이 말씀이 중요한 이유는 이 말씀이 우리에게 하나님께서는 명령에 따른 것뿐만 아니라 우리가 은밀히 행하는 것도 보신다는 것을 상기시키기 때문입니다. 

신명기 22:1-3

“네 형제의 소나 양이 길 잃은 것을 보거든 못 본 체하지 말고 너는 반드시 그것들을 끌어다가 네 형제에게 돌릴 것이요 2 네 형제가 네게서 멀거나 또는 네가 그를 알지 못하거든 그 짐승을 네 집으로 끌고 가서 네 형제가 찾기까지 네게 두었다가 그에게 돌려 줄지니 3 나귀라도 그리하고 의복이라도 그리하고 형제가 잃어버린 어떤 것이든지 네가 얻거든 다 그리하고 못 본 체하지 말 것이며”

이 토라 말씀은 우리의 현대 문화에 아주 중요합니다. 이것은 우리에게 우리의 형제자매와 그들의 재산에 신경을 쓰라고 가르칩니다. 이번 토라 포션에서 “형제”라는 단어를 세어 보십시오.

여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 형제자매들을 위해 드리는 기도는 순전한 사랑이며 메시아의 몸을 세우는 것입니다. 여러분이 이기적인 이해관계 없이 여러분이 모르지만 형제인 누군가를 위해 천국에서 투표를 하는 것이기에 이것은 아가페 사랑입니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 우리가 이 세상에서는 서로 모를지라도 우리를 함께 묶는 사랑과 믿음의 긴 사슬로 연결된 다른 사람을 위해 하는 이기적이지 않고 참된 사랑과 관심의 표현인 이 기도를 보고 계십니다.

우리가 천국에 가서 우리가 위해서 기도했고 때로는 울부짖었던 사람들을 만나게 되면 기쁜 일일 것입니다. 그들은 육신적으로는 모르지만 영적으로는 같은 그리스도의 몸의 지체인 형제자매들로서, 언젠가 함께 앉아 “제가 당신이 치유되도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!”, “당신이 가자지구 하마스 테러리스트들의 잔인한 손아귀에서 인질들을 구하기 위해 가자지구에서 싸울 때 제가 당신이 안전하도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!” 이야기 나누는 특권을 누리게 될 이들입니다.

하나님의 은혜와, 치유와 힘을 주시는 하나님의 부드러운 손길이 필요한 다음 형제자매님들을 위해 기도해 주십시오.

예루살렘에서는:

 예후다는 군 복무하러 다시 돌아갔습니다. 그의 안전한 귀가를 위해 기도해 주십시오.

 (신규) 르우벤은 군 복무에서 돌아왔습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 20 September, 2024 (NEW)

First things first! I got mixed up a few days ago and wrote about the Torah portion for the following Shabbat. Well, I ask for your forgiveness! There is an advantage for you to spend a whole week pondering on next week's Torah Portion. So, Now I am writing the proper Torah portion for this Shabbat of September 21, 2024.

This Shabbat, the reading is from a portion called Ki-Tavo. The English translation of the first words of this Torah Portion is: "And it shall be, when you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it…"

The readings this Shabbat are from the Torah Deuteronomy 26:1-29:8.
From the Prophets Isaiah 60:1-22
From the Gospel, we will read Matthew 4:13-24.

I find it difficult to choose where to emphasize the Torah portion, the prophets, or Matthew's text. All the reading on this Shabbat is so important. So, I will keep it as short as possible and cover the ground.

Moses is getting close to the end of his three-hour + lecture, standing with more than a million people on the east edge of the Jordan River. In our reading of the Torah portion, Moses starts with the opening words:

"When you come into the Land which the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance." 

Those 40 years in the wilderness of Sinai were college, education, if you wish, and military language. Those years in the Sinai were a boot camp. There were constant tests – when I read the text of this week's Portion, I am teleporting back to the day of an unorganized and oblivious mass of people who don't know where they are going or the hardships they will have to face and the length of the journey. They were enslaved and with the mentality of enslaved people, and that is why God dragged them 40 years in the wilderness with a series of tests that were not only miracles but also the building of trust, i.e., Faith events.

These people were born in the wilderness and just hours away from entering the Land. Moses comes in like a football coach just minutes before the beginning of the game, giving the last instructions. Here are a few of these instructions that Moses is giving the people of Israel.

Remember that Moses' leadership was not democratic. Now, Moses knows that he will not continue to lead these people. He knows that the people and those who lead them will enter a different lifestyle for the first time in their lives. Most of these people have only known wandering in the Sinai Desert. They were fed Manna from Heaven and quail birds from God. The water they drank was from the Rock; war was with Amalek, but God was fighting on their side, and the victory was a miracle. Now, all this is about to change.

The first thing that Moses burdens these people with is built of two unusual issues. One would quickly think that the first thing these people need is encouragement not to fear. Hearing how God will bless them, they will enjoy the land God promised to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But, NO! As you enter the land, the first thing to accomplish is to begin to calculate and prepare for the feast of Weeks (Pentecost) to bring your first fruits from the land and put them on my altar.

You would think that Moses would teach them what they are about to face when they enter the land, but No! Moses opens this last stage and opportunity to instruct them about wars, enemies, and challenges.

This shows us two things:

1) The feast of Pentecost has three significant aspects: the ingathering of the wheat harvest, the end of the summer fruit season, and the feast of the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. 

2) Give God the first fruit and the best fruit. The only way of showing gratitude in the Bible is by giving. Saying "Thank you!" is worthless. Giving the first produce, the first fruit, the first and the best show of gratitude is giving something unique and special to the LORD GOD who took you out of sinful life, out of hopelessness, out of spiritual poverty into material wealth – give – donate.

However, giving is not the hardest thing to do, so on the feast of Pentecost, the most challenging thing that Moses presents to the children of Israel is the confession you make in front of the Priests.

I want to make this next point crystal clear: The people come to Jerusalem to the house of the Lord with a basket of fruit and vegetables – the best of the best – no blemish and fresh produce that will be dedicated and sanctified for the Lord. The worshiper is happy and feels he has the right to be proud and satisfied. He looks around the crowd to see how they appreciate the fruit of his labor. He wants people to appreciate how talented and generous he is to come to Jerusalem to dedicate his best to the Lord. The priest meets and welcomes the worshiper with his basket on his shoulder.

The worshiper opens up with this statement:

"And you shall go to the one who is a priest in those days, and say to him, "I declare today to the LORD your God that I have come to the country which the LORD swore to our fathers to give us.'"

The basket full of the first fruits is handed to the priest but ultimately given to God. This simple principle is of great importance for both the giver and the priest who receives it on behalf of the Lord. The priests will dedicate the gift, and the Priests will enjoy eating these gifts. But, the gift is to the Lord.

Pastors and Preachers must understand that the funds people give to the church are given into the hands of the church's administration to do the church's work, preach the Good News, and care for the poor, the orphans, and the Widows. What is given by the people is sanctified and to be used first of all for the community's needs. The Preacher, being a shepherd of God's flock, must remember the words of Ezekiel in chapter 34 of his book! 

Ezekiel 34:1

"And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, "Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds: 'Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? 3 You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. 4 The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them. 5 So they were scattered because there was no shepherd, and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. 6 My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill; yes, My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one was seeking or searching for them." 7 "Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: 8 "As I live," says the Lord GOD, "surely because My flock became a prey, and My flock became food for every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, nor did My shepherds search for My flock, but the shepherds fed themselves and did not feed My flock"— 9 therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the LORD! 10Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall feed themselves no more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them."

This text repeatedly uses the words of the LORD: "My Flock." Israel is God's flock, was God's flock, and will continue to be God's flock as long as this world exists. It will continue to be God's flock in the New Heaven and New Earth.

Here is why this statement is true – the text of Jeremiah 31:35-37, which comes right after God's proclamation that he will make a new covenant, a NEW TESTAMENT, with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It is very interesting to me that God's New Covenant is not made with the churches of Christ, the Baptists, the Pentecostals, or any of the so-called "born-again" denominations. It is always with Israel, even when Israel is divided into the northern and the southern geographical and prophetic divisions, that in Ezekiel's prophecy, God unites and reconnects into one.

In our reading on Shabbat of September 21, one more thing to point out is the demands put upon each worshiper to bring gifts to the Lord. He has to confess before the Priest and the Lord. A big crowd gathered, and each worshiper had their basket of the first fruit on their shoulder, ready to confess his real and true identity.

This principle is fundamental, especially when we give money, time, or service to the community (church). It has to be done with great humility. Here are the words each worshiper had to confess as he handed the basket of the best fruit and vegetable to the priest:

"My father was a Syrian, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous. 6 But the Egyptians mistreated us, afflicted us, and laid hard bondage on us. 7 Then we cried out to the LORD God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice and looked on our affliction and our labor and our oppression. 8 So the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. 9 He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, "a land flowing with milk and honey"; 10 and now, behold, I have brought the first fruits of the land which you, O LORD, have given me."

You confess that Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel, was a lost Syrian. The principle here is: Don't put your family wealth and pedigree before the Lord. Humble yourself and give with humility to God and the community. Giving is an obligation and a commandment, and it should be done with great humility and, as the Lord commanded in privacy, something that ought to be preached and practiced in the evangelical churches. Giving is not to be shown publicly, with people standing in line with an envelope in hand and marching to a big wooden box up front of the church to put their envelope in the box. Sister Frida Lyndsay, the founder of Christ for the Nations in Dallas, who was one of the best fundraisers that I had the privilege and blessing to know personally for many years, said that at least between 10% to 15% of the envelopes in the wooden boxes were empty. People wanted the church to see their giving, but their envelopes were empty.

Each worshiper came with a rich big basket of fresh fruit, vegetables, and other delicious gifts for the Lord. Before the worshiper presented his gift, he declared himself as a lost, formerly enslaved person and a lost Aramean( Gentile) Syrian. In the very moment of his generosity as an Israelite who comes to the house of the Lord, he presents the real truth that he is only a son of a lost Syrian ( Aramean) whom God has delivered from Slavery.

What can we learn from this text in chapter 26 of Deuteronomy?

1. We must give God our best, the best of all the fruits of our labor. In the Law of Moses, we are obligated to provide 10% - but this is only a recommendation of the minimum, not a limit to our generosity.

2. Every one of Paul's letters is a fund-raising letter. He collected money from the churches to bring to Jerusalem for the same feast, the Feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), and when he came to Jerusalem, where did Paul give the money collected from the churches in Asia? He gave it to the temple to His people—Paul's defense in front of the Sanhedrin – the high court in Jerusalem. 

Acts 21: 3:

"I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers' law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today."

Acts 24:17

"Now, after many years, I came to bring alms and offerings to my nation, 18 in the midst of which some Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with a mob nor with tumult."

Acts 24:17 is Paul's confession before Felix, the Roman governor. Remember that Paul came to Jerusalem with seven non-Jewish disciples to dedicate them in Jerusalem.

3. Paul's ministry in Greece and Asia Minor (Turkey) was to raise funds for the Jews in Jerusalem, and obviously, Paul tells us what he did with the funds he raised. He gave them to his Nation, to the Jewish Disciples in Jerusalem!

From my experience through numerous truly financial miracles during more than 60 years of ministry, the Shulam family and Netivyah have not been in debt even 1 dollar, including buying the building on Narkis Street in 1981 and Rebuilding and enlarging the building in the 2020s. Our projects, like the HaMotzi Food program, feed roughly close to 1000 people, providing them with three meals per day for nearly 25 years. The blessing of giving is not connected to how much you give but how you give and what is in your heart when you give.

Please read the Torah portion of "Ki-Tavo—when you come into the land!" There are many more exciting things in this Portion. As we enter the period of repentance for the Jewish people, asking and begging God for forgiveness, these texts are inspiring.

As a young boy in Jerusalem, I remember the deacons of the Synagogue would start rounds weeks before the Rosh-Hashanah holiday early in the morning, around 4:30 – 5:00 AM, with a big wooden stick and knock on the window and scream "Selichot - Selichot" (repentance) and "get up and come to the synagogue!"

I am sorry, but my father and mother didn't get up to pray or go to the Synagogue. My father let out a good curse in one of the 18 languages he spoke and went back to sleep. All my mother would say is:" BARUCH Enough!" (She didn't say it in English or Hebrew but in Ladino (Jewish Spanish) that the Sephardic Jews speak.) 

In summary, I want to emphasize two things.

1) When you give to God, always give your best. Your best is not an amount; you could be the widow who gave five cents and was praised for offering more than the pharisee who gave 1000 cents.

2) Giving ought to humble you before God and before the community. The worshiper in Deuteronomy 21 says he is from among the sons of Abraham, a lost wandering Aramean. In other words, leave your proud and cocky mode and humbly stand before the Lord. Remember that God knows your heart and your bank account also.

I would like to end this Jerusalem Prayer List with the following text from our Torah reading. This text is important because it reminds us that God sees what we do secretly, not only in commandments. 

Deuteronomy 22:1

"You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep going astray and hide yourself from them; you shall certainly bring them back to your brother. 2 And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him. 3 You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother's, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you must not hide yourself."

This text from our Torah reading is essential to our modern culture. It teaches us to care for our brothers and sisters and their property. Just count the word "Brother" in our Torah portion.

Take this simple and inspiring song and its words, and remember them!

We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
We are One in The Spirit,
We are One in The Lord.
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored.

Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.

When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

In Jerusalem:

 Yehuda is back into military service next week. Pray for his safe return home.

 new Reuven is also back from military service.

 Yehuda Levi is in the hospital with stage 4 lymphoma for the fourth week. We ask for prayers for his family. Especially the difficult time that Elisheva is experiencing. A reminder - in past JPL (in 2010) Yehuda is the father of Major Emmanuel Levi , who died in a tragic training exercise.

new This morning Joe woke up with tooth pain and had to have a wisdom tooth extracted. Some other work needs to be done other teeth. Marcia's health needs have not changed and we pray for strengthening her health and memory.

 Ilana Ahijervie is a dear sister who is 98 years old and suffering from memory problems.

 Please pray for our dear sister, Lea Kurkey.

 Pray for Adam’s father and mother, Barry and Dalia. They have some health problems and challenges.

 Pray for Hannah suffering from Migraine Headaches. Miriam is a dear sister old age dementia.

 Mauno Lemponen has been diagnosed with cancer in advanced stages. We are asking for Gods Will to be done, giving him healthy days with family—prayers for Hilka, Miika, and Ester, who support each other.

 Pray for Keijo and Salme, our dear partners and fellow workers in God’s flock. Both Keijo and Salme have some challenging heart issues.

 Max Rodrigues. his mothers health issues. she has stomach problems that have yet to be diagnosed. The hospital is taking a long time to complete tests. Pray for her salvation. Pray for Max as he navigates a challenging period in his life. He has confidence Gods victory in his life.

 Pray for the Congregations related to Netivyah in Brazil to have the strength and stamina to face the challenges ahead of them with courage and strength of faithfulness to the Lord and to the vision of the restoration of the church and Israel.

 Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.

 Pray for a dear young man, Paulo, from Curitiba, Brazil, who seriously needs our prayers for sanity and mental health.

 Pray for a dear sister named Claudia Rita Souze Arau. She has cancer and needs God’s healing hands to touch her with healing.

 Pray for Fatima Maria Docarmo Guimararaes - pray for her health and her granddaughters’ twin babies.

 Guilherme Antonio Nothen Becker is suffering from back problems.

 update Pat R the returned for a brief period to deal with an infection and is now home.

 Sarah Sacks has received the news that she has stage 1 cancer and a treatment plan is in the works. I am asking that you raise your prayers for Jonathan & Sarah as they begin the road of diagnosis and treatment for Cancer. However we believe in the power of healing that only God can provide.

 Elisheva is studying for passing Financial certifications in September. Please pray for calmness in her studies and confidence in passing her exams next month. also for health and her household.

 Jerry Rogers - a long time prayer warier and supporter in Dallas has been diagnosed with cancer. he is starting treatments and we lift up his doctors and medical team & family in prayer.

 Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.

After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
