이번 안식일에는 민수기 마지막 부분을 읽습니다. 토라 포션은 두 개입니다.

이 두 포션은 마톳트와 마쎄이로, 민수기 30:2~36:13입니다.

선지서에서 읽는 말씀은 극적이며 종종 가장 잘못 해석되는 어떤 본문을 이해하는 데에 아주 중요한 말씀인 예레미야 2:4–28과 추가로 예레미야 3:4입니다.

신약성경에서 읽는 말씀도 두 개인데요, 누가복음 13:1-9와 마가복음 11:12-23을 읽을 것입니다. 이 모든 말씀은 예슈아의 제자들인 우리 모두에게 아주 요긴한 말씀입니다. 물론, 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 모든 하나님의 말씀이 중요하지만, 미쳐 돌아가는 요즘 같은 시대와 중동과 미국과 유럽의 우리 주위에서 일어나고 있는 사건들에는 특히 더 중요합니다. 우리가 살고 있는 세상은 엉망진창이고, 도전들은 모두 어렵고 스트레스가 많습니다.

2024년 7월 31일 수요일 오늘 뉴스는 놀라워서, 이스라엘을 위한 진지하고 냉철한 기도가 필요합니다. 어젯밤 이스라엘은 가자지구 하마스 주요 지도자 중 하나이며 테러리스트 우두머리인 이스마엘 하니야를 제거했습니다. 그는 이란 테헤란에 있는, 이란 첩보 기관 소유의 안가 한 아파트에서 자는 동안 제거되었습니다. 이 제거는 레바논의 헤즈볼라의 주요 인물이 레바논 베이루트의 다키아에 있는 안가 아파트에서 역시 자는 동안 제거된 지 딱 24시간 후에 일어난 것입니다. 이들의 제거는 골란고원의 한 마을에서 어린이 열두 명을 살해한 것에 대한 대응이었습니다. 헤즈볼라가 이 어린이들이 훈련하고 노는 축구경기장에 거대 중형 로켓포를 발사했던 것입니다. 이스라엘과 이란 꼭두각시 가자지구 하마스 및 레바논 헤즈볼라 사이에 유혈 “핑퐁 게임”이 벌어지고 있습니다. 이들 두 조직은 이란의 관리를 받고 재정지원을 받고 이란이 제조했거나 중국, 북한, 러시아에서 산 현대식 무기 공급을 받고 있습니다.

이스라엘을 위해 기도해 주십시오! 기도를 멈추지 마시기 바랍니다! 여러분이 기도하거나 식사 감사 기도 때마다 이스라엘과 이스라엘에 있는 사람들을 언급해 주십시오. 메시아의 유대인 제자 중 수십 명이 이스라엘 군에 복무 중입니다. 저희 회중의 유다는 이미 가자지구에서 80일 넘게, 레바논 국경에서 며칠 복무했고, 곧 다시 북부로 소집되기로 예정되어 있습니다. 우리 주님의 선한 천사들이 군복 입은 우리 남녀 제자들을 둘러싸고 모든 이스라엘 군인들과 마찬가지로 보호해 주시도록 기도해 주십시오. 하나님께서 악한 계획과 비밀 터널과 적이 숨겨놓은 함정을 드러내 주시도록 기도해 주십시오. 이스라엘군이 오늘날에도 계속 전 세계에서 가장 도덕적이도록 도와주시고, 가자지구의 민간인들을 보호해 주시고, 이스라엘을 해악과 죽음으로부터 보호해 주시도록 기도해 주십시오.

이제 이번 안식일 토라 포션으로 가도록 합시다!

토라 포션 마톳트 민수기 31장에서 우리는 전쟁에 나갔던 병사들이 전쟁에 나가 승리하고 안전하게 돌아온 것에 대한 감사의 선물로 그들이 전쟁에서 탈취해 온 전리품 중 일부를 레위 지파, 레위인들에게 주라는 새로운 명령을 볼 수 있습니다. 이 원리는 지난 아홉 달 동안 네티비야에 있는 저희 안에서 아주 생생하게 살아 역사했습니다. 우리가 하나님의 말씀, 토라 포션과 선지서 포션을 읽는 것이 마치 일간 신문을 읽는 것 같았던 적이 아주 빈번했습니다.

하나님께서는 네티비야를 사용하여 저희 군에게 복 주셨는데요, 가장 극적이고 가장 후하고 매우 값진 방법으로 저희 군인들에게 필요한 장비와 보급품을 공급하셨습니다. 저는 다음 사항을 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있습니다. 네티비야는 이스라엘에서 전장에 있는 우리 사람들에게 매우 필요하고 전략적이기까지 한 장비를 공급하기 위해 물자를 보급하고 동원한 유일한 사역이었을 뿐만 아니라, 제가 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은 이스라엘 군인들과 함께 서고 현대적 헬멧과 현대적 방탄 기능을 장착한 구명조끼와 장교들이 말하는 바와 같이 전장에 있는 우리 군인들의 목숨을 구하는 첨단 드론 같은 전술 장비를 공급하기 위해 동원했던 첫 번째 기관이었습니다. 주님께서는 기독교인이 이스라엘과 함께 서고 반-유대주의와 싸우는 것을 돕도록 이스라엘 네티비야와 인터내셔널 네티비야를 사용해오셨습니다.

이번 토라 포션에서 우리는 우리를 안내하는 원리들을 볼 수 있는데요, 모세는 이렇게 명했습니다:

“여호와께서 모세에게 말씀하여 이르시되 너는 제사장 엘르아살과 회중의 수령들과 더불어 이 사로잡은 사람들과 짐승들을 계수하고 그 얻은 물건을 반분하여 그 절반은 전쟁에 나갔던 군인들에게 주고 절반은 회중에게 주고 전쟁에 나갔던 군인들은 사람이나 소나 나귀나 양 떼의 오백분의 일을 여호와께 드릴지니라 곧 이를 그들의 절반에서 가져다가 여호와의 거제로 제사장 엘르아살에게 주고 또 이스라엘 자손이 받은 절반에서는 사람이나 소나 나귀나 양 떼나 각종 짐승 오십분의 일을 가져다가 여호와의 성막을 맡은 레위인에게 주라 모세와 제사장 엘르아살이 여호와께서 모세에게 명령하신 대로 하니라” (민수기 31:25-31)

위 말씀은 사람들과 주님을 섬기는 사람들과 나누는 것에 대해 로마 (가톨릭)의 딸들인 대부분의 개신교 교회의 가르침과는 다른 원리를 가르치고 있습니다. 대부분의 교회에서는 사람들이 자기 소득의 10%를 교회 일에 드려야 한다고 가르치지만, 이것이 이스라엘에 명하신, 특별히 레위 지파와 광야의 성막과 후에 예루살렘 성전에서 섬기는 사람들에게 주도록 분명하게 명한 구약의 원칙입니다. 이 가르침은 신약성경의 사도들이 소아시아와 유럽에 있는 교회들에 쓴 서신에서는 볼 수 없습니다. 흥미로운 점은 이 교회들이 구약성경의 토라와 선지서에서 명한 어떤 것에 대해서는 반대되는 투표를 했다는 것입니다!

하나님께서 모세에게 명하시고 모세를 통해 온 이스라엘에 명하신 이 명령에서 우리는 우리가 얻은 부와 심지어 전쟁에서 전리품으로 얻는 부를 하나님을 섬기는 레위인들과 나눠야 한다는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 둘째, 우리는 이스라엘이 한 민족이지만 지파들 간에 서로 다른 부르심이 있음을 볼 수 있습니다. 또한, 레위 지파는 이스라엘 백성을 위해 하나님의 종이 되라는 명령을 받았습니다. 저는 우리 기독교 형제자매님들이 무슨 재정적 헌금을 어디에 드려야 하는지 모르며 또한 주장하지도 않습니다. 그러나 이 토라 포션의 원칙은 너무 복잡하여 이해할 수 없는 것이 아닙니다. 현대에는 주님의 일에 헌금하는 것은 단지 권장사항이며 고린도후서에서 바울의 가르침에 근거한 심은 대로 거둘 것이라는 하나의 원리일 뿐입니다.

기독교인들이 이것을 믿는다면 이 좋은 소식을 퍼뜨리기 위해 설교자나 목사가 필요하지 않을 것입니다. 그들은 사람이 존재하는 모든 영역에서 효력을 발휘하도록 이 거룩한 원칙을 이용하기 시작하고 기댈 것입니다. 우리는 하나님께서 모세에게 이스라엘 백성에게 명하여 그들이 전쟁에서 얻은 것을 하나님을 섬기며 하나님의 백성을 대변하고 가르치고 기도하며 섬기는 사람들을 축복하는 데 쓰라고 명령하시는 것을 봅니다. 사람들이 아주 많이 드리므로 하나님께서는 모세에게 “족하도다” 백성에게 그만 가져오라고 말하라고 말씀하셨어야 했습니다. 흥미로운 것은 지휘관이 그 군사들의 안전한 귀환에 대해 기부하는 것입니다(31장).

그 다음 중요한 원칙은 민수기 32장에서 발견되는데요, 여기에서 우리는 세 지파가 모세에게 가서 이렇게 말하는 것을 볼 수 있습니다:

“르우벤 자손과 갓 자손은 심히 많은 가축 떼를 가졌더라 그들이 야셀 땅과 길르앗 땅을 본즉 그 곳은 목축할 만한 장소인지라 갓 자손과 르우벤 자손이 와서 모세와 제사장 엘르아살과 회중 지휘관들에게 말하여 이르되 아다롯과 디본과 야셀과 니므라와 헤스본과 엘르알레와 스밤과 느보와 브온 곧 여호와께서 이스라엘 회중 앞에서 쳐서 멸하신 땅은 목축할 만한 장소요 당신의 종들에게는 가축이 있나이다 또 이르되 우리가 만일 당신에게 은혜를 입었으면 이 땅을 당신의 종들에게 그들의 소유로 주시고 우리에게 요단 강을 건너지 않게 하소서” (민수기 32:1-5)

이스라엘의 두 지파와 반 지파의 요단강 동편에 거주하고 싶다는 이 요청은 매우 이기적이고 자기 잇속만 차리는 것입니다. 하나님께서는 그들을 저지하지 않으시고 그들에게 아주 합리적이고 흥미로운 조건을 걸어 그들이 요단강 동편 땅을 가지는 것을 허락하십니다. 우리는 이 사건에서 무엇을 배울 수 있습니까? 지난 안식일 토라 포션에서 제게 놀라웠던 한 가지는 하나님께서 너무 경직된 법률 고수주의거나 비열하거나 가혹한 하나님이 아니시라는 것입니다! 지난 몇 주 동안 우리는 기독교인들이 그리는 하나님과는 다른 관점에서 하나님을 보았습니다. 일반적으로 말해서 기독교인들은 이스라엘의 하나님을 가혹하고 경직된 법률 고수주의이고 불가능한 것을 요구하시며 절대적 복종을 요구하시고 심판하시고 가혹한 벌을 내리시는 분으로 그립니다. 그들은 신약의 하나님은 사랑이 많으시고 친절하시고 부드럽고 은혜로운 분으로 봅니다.

저는 제가 미국 조지아주 발도스타에 있는 조지아 크리스천 스쿨에 도착했을 때 받은 저의 첫 영어 성경을 기억합니다. 성경 뒤쪽에 지도와 도표가 몇 개 있었는데요, 그 중 하나는 구약의 하나님과 신약의 하나님 사이의 차이점을 보여주는 것이었습니다. 이러한 도표는 대부분의 영어 성경에 더 이상 없습니다. 제가 찾아보았는데요, 그런 도표를 찾지 못했습니다.

구약의 하나님은 심판과 처벌의 하나님입니다.
신약의 하나님은 사랑과 은혜의 하나님입니다.
구약에서 하나님께서는 용서하지 않으십니다.
신약에서 하나님께서는 용서하십니다.

이번 토라 포션에서 우리는 하나님께서 매우 이해심이 많으시고 은혜로우셔서 그분의 원래 약속과 전혀 다르고 심지어 하나님께서 아브라함과 우리 조상에게 하신 약속과도 다른 요청을 들어주시고 굽혀주심을 보여주는 일화를 하나 이상 볼 수 있습니다.

제가 토라에서 보는 하나님은 세상을 너무 사랑하셔서 구원하시기 위해 그분의 독생자를 제물로 보내신 그 하나님과 다른 하나님이 아닙니다.

이번 안식일 토라 포션에서 생기는 또 다른 생각은 하나님의 모든 요구가 요단강 동편 모압 땅과 그 북쪽 땅에 그대로 거주하고 싶어하는 두 지파와 반 지파에게서 비롯된 것입니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘 민족의 하나 됨을 유지하고 조장하고 강력하게 하기를 바라셨습니다. 이스라엘의 하나 됨은 하나님께 매우 중요했습니다. 그리스도의 몸의 하나 됨은 신약성경의 중심 주제입니다. 우리는 신약성경에서 하나 됨이 하나님과 우리 주 예슈아께도 아주 중요함을 볼 수 있습니다. 친애하는 형제님들, 오늘날 우리가 한 분 하나님과 한 분 구주 아래에서 하나 됨과 하나의 정체성과 한 몸, 한 가족, 한 공동체를 얼마나 강조하는지 보십시오.

그 중요성을 강조하는 주된 말씀이 있습니다:

요한복음 17:20-23: 모든 믿는 자를 위한 예수님의 기도에서 그분께서는 하나 됨을 강조하시며, 그분과 하나님께서 하나인 것처럼 믿는 자들이 하나가 되도록 기도하십니다. 이 하나 됨은 세상에 예수님의 사명의 참됨을 보여주기 위한 것입니다.

“내가 비옵는 것은 이 사람들만 위함이 아니요 또 그들의 말로 말미암아 나를 믿는 사람들도 위함이니 아버지여, 아버지께서 내 안에, 내가 아버지 안에 있는 것 같이 그들도 다 하나가 되어 우리 안에 있게 하사 세상으로 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것을 믿게 하옵소서 내게 주신 영광을 내가 그들에게 주었사오니 이는 우리가 하나가 된 것 같이 그들도 하나가 되게 하려 함이니이다 곧 내가 그들 안에 있고 아버지께서 내 안에 계시어 그들로 온전함을 이루어 하나가 되게 하려 함은 아버지께서 나를 보내신 것과 또 나를 사랑하심 같이 그들도 사랑하신 것을 세상으로 알게 하려 함이로소이다”*

에베소서 4:1-6: 바울은 믿는 자들에게 그들의 부르심에 합당하게 살도록 촉구하며, 평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 지켜야 함을 강조합니다.

“그러므로 주 안에서 갇힌 내가 너희를 권하노니 너희가 부르심을 받은 일에 합당하게 행하여 모든 겸손과 온유로 하고 오래 참음으로 사랑 가운데서 서로 용납하고 평안의 매는 줄로 성령이 하나 되게 하신 것을 힘써 지키라 몸이 하나요 성령도 한 분이시니 이와 같이 너희가 부르심의 한 소망 안에서 부르심을 받았느니라 주도 한 분이시요 믿음도 하나요 세례도 하나요 하나님도 한 분이시니 곧 만유의 아버지시라 만유 위에 계시고 만유를 통일하시고 만유 가운데 계시도다”

고린도전서 12:12-27: 바울은 교회를 묘사하기 위해 몸을 비유로 사용하면서 모든 지체가 중요하며 하나 됨을 지키고 효율적으로 기능하기 위해 서로 돌봐야 함을 강조합니다.

“몸은 하나인데 많은 지체가 있고 몸의 지체가 많으나 한 몸임과 같이 그리스도도 그러하니라 우리가 유대인이나 헬라인이나 종이나 자유인이나 다 한 성령으로 세례를 받아 한 몸이 되었고 또 다 한 성령을 마시게 하셨느니라 몸은 한 지체뿐만 아니요 여럿이니 … 오직 하나님이 몸을 고르게 하여 부족한 지체에게 귀중함을 더하사 몸 가운데서 분쟁이 없고 오직 여러 지체가 서로 같이 돌보게 하셨느니라 만일 한 지체가 고통을 받으면 모든 지체가 함께 고통을 받고 한 지체가 영광을 얻으면 모든 지체가 함께 즐거워하느니라 너희는 그리스도의 몸이요 지체의 각 부분이라”

이 말씀은 무엇보다도 그리스도의 몸의 하나 됨이 교회의 증인 됨과 영향력과 성장에 아주 중요함을 강조하고 있습니다. 이것은 바람직한 특성으로 제시되었을 뿐만 아니라, 기독교인의 삶과 증언에 있어서 절대로 필요한 요소로 제시되기도 했습니다. 하나님께서는 이스라엘의 이 두 지파와 반 지파가 요단강 동편에 거주하는 것을 허락하셨지만, 이스라엘의 하나 됨은 양편 모두가 지키고 존중해야 하며, 평시든 전시든 양편 모두 참여해야 합니다.

이번 안식일에 읽는 두 번째 토라 포션이면서 민수기의 마지막 토라 포션의 이름은 마쎄이입니다. 아주 흥미로운 이 본문은 하나님께서 사람들과 어떻게 일하시는지 이해하기 위해 반드시 공부해야 하는 본문인데, 저는 교회에서는 한 번도 들어본 적이 없습니다. 열여섯 살부터 조지아 크리스천 스쿨과 내쉬빌에 있는 데이비드 립스콤 대학교 학부와 일요일과 수요저녁 모임에서의 수천 시간과 수많은 날들을 보내면서도 저는 슬로브핫의 딸들과 딸들이 아버지의 재산을 상속하는 문제에 대해 언급하는 것을 들어본 적이 없습니다. 여기 이 토라 포션에 아주 중요한 이슈가 있습니다. 여러분도 기억하시다시피, 이 문제는 지난 안식일 토라 포션 “핀하스”에서 처음 우리에게 소개되었습니다. 지난 토라 포션에는 고정관념에서 벗어난 두 가지 가르침이 있는데요, 너무 중요하여 우리 모두가 배워야 하며, 특히 성경교사들이 배워야 하는 새로운 원칙들입니다. 하나님께서는, 모세와 아론은 성막 입구에서 성교를 하고 있는 이 괘씸한 반역 사건을 어떻게 다뤄야 할지 전혀 몰라 수수방관하고 있을 때, 비스하스가 직접 법을 집행하여 시므리와 고스비를 죽임으로써 문제를 해결하고 염병을 멈추게 한 것에 대해 비느하스에게 상을 주셨습니다.

비느하스는 문제를 자기 손에 가져와 그것을 해결했지만, 관습적인 권위 밖에서 허락 없이 한 것이었습니다. 토라 포션 “핀하스”에서, 전에는 한 번도 한 적이 없던 고정관념을 벗어난 또 다른 요청은, 오직 아들들만 아버지의 유산을 상속할 수 있는데 이 가련한 남자는 딸만 있고 아들은 하나도 없어서, 이런 아버지의 재산을 상속하기 위해 일곱(다섯) 딸들이 한 요청이었습니다. 딸들은 다른 지파 사람에게 시집을 갈 수도 있습니다. 그렇게 되면 영원한 기업으로 물려받은 재산이 그 지파 안에 남아 있지 않을 수 있는 우려가 있습니다. 하나님께서는 이 문제도 이해하셨고 슬로브핫의 딸들의 요청도 이해하셨습니다.

이제, 이번 토라 포션 “마쎄이”에서 이 딸들이 모세에게 와서 하나님께서 그들의 문제를 이해하시고 상속법을 바꾸시어 여성도 그들 가족 유산을 상속하는 것을 허락하셨다는 좋은 소식을 받았습니다. 이것이 대단한 이유는 하나님께서 인간을 이해하시고 토라가 더 이상 적절하지 않거나 실제적이지 않을 때는 그것을 바꾸신다는 것을 제가 알기 때문입니다. 우리 하나님은 얼마나 위대하고 유연하시며 사랑이 많으시고 이해심이 많으시며 은혜로우신지요! 우주의 창조주께서는 가혹하지 않으시며, 까다롭지 않으시며, 아주, 아주 사랑이 많으십니다. 사랑이 아주 많으셔서 그분께서는 온 세상의 죄를 사하시기 위해 그분의 독생자 예슈아를 보내셔서 희생제물로 죽게 하셨습니다. 하나님의 존전에 있는 천사들은 그 순간에 하나님의 얼굴을 보며 하나님께서 이마를 긁적이며 “저 슬로브핫의 딸들이 옳다. 내가 내 율법에 있는 이 문제를 더 일찍 보았어야 했다. 딸만 있고 아들은 없는 이 가련한 남자의 딸들아, 고맙구나! 이 문제를 가져와 내가 이것에 주의를 기울이게 해주어 고맙다!” 말씀하시는 것을 보았을 것입니다. 이것은 하나님의 진짜 성품과 본연의 모습을 볼 수 있는 멋진 창입니다. 이스라엘의 하나님께서는 기독교인들이 우리 주 메시아 예슈아의 아버지 하나님에 대해 가지고 있는 관점과는 아주 다릅니다. 우리 모두가 기억해야 하는 교훈은 우리 하나님께서는 사랑이 많으시고, 은혜로우시며, 친절하시고, 그분의 자녀 우리 모두에게 오래 참으시는 분이시라는 것입니다.

이란과 터키와 다른 나라들을 포함하여 중동 전체로 번질 위험이 있고, 세계대전으로까지 발전할 수도 있는 이 미친 전쟁 시기에 있는 이스라엘을 위해 기도해 주십시오. 이 큰 세계대전에는 러시아, 중국, 미국, 프랑스가 포함될 수 있고, 여러분은 이 전쟁에 가담할 다른 나라의 이름을 더 불러낼 수도 있을 것입니다.

지난 주에 저희는 예루살렘 현지에 있는 이 회중(교회)을 돕는 일에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 전해 드렸습니다.

네티비야 성경교육사역과 이스라엘 로에 이스라엘 회중(교회)은 우기가 시작되기 전에 건물 지붕을 보수해야 하는 긴급한 필요가 있습니다. 천장에서 물이 새는 중대한 문제가 있습니다. 저희 회당 지붕에서부터 3개 층 아래로까지 물이 새서 즉시 보수해야 합니다. 이렇게 물이 새는 것을 고치는 유일한 방법은 지붕 전체를 걷어내고 지붕의 틈새를 막고 방수 처리를 다시 하는 것입니다. 예루살렘 저희 건물의 이 보수 작업 비용의 견적은 미화 약 10만 달러입니다. 이것은 상당한 보수 작업으로 전문가가 해야 하고, 2024년 8월 말 전에 끝내야 합니다. 도와주시기 바랍니다.

여러분이 개인적으로 모르는 형제자매들을 위해 드리는 기도는 순전한 사랑이며 메시아의 몸을 세우는 것입니다. 여러분이 이기적인 이해관계 없이 여러분이 모르지만 형제인 누군가를 위해 천국에서 투표를 하는 것이기에 이것은 아가페 사랑입니다. 그리고 하나님께서는 우리가 이 세상에서는 서로 모를지라도 우리를 함께 묶는 사랑과 믿음의 긴 사슬로 연결된 다른 사람을 위해 하는 이기적이지 않고 참된 사랑과 관심의 표현인 이 기도를 보고 계십니다.

우리가 천국에 가서 우리가 위해서 기도했고 때로는 울부짖었던 사람들을 만나게 되면 기쁜 일일 것입니다. 그들은 육신적으로는 모르지만 영적으로는 같은 그리스도의 몸의 지체인 형제자매들로서, 언젠가 함께 앉아 “제가 당신이 치유되도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!”, “당신이 가자지구 하마스 테러리스트들의 잔인한 손아귀에서 인질들을 구하기 위해 가자지구에서 싸울 때 제가 당신이 안전하도록 기도한 것이 기억납니다!” 이야기 나누는 특권을 누리게 될 이들입니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – 2 August, 2024

This Shabbat is the last reading from the book of Numbers. The reading is a double portion.

The two portions are Mattot & Massei, from Numbers 30:2–36:13.

The reading from the Prophets is dramatic and very important for understanding some texts that are most often misinterpreted: Jeremiah 2:4–28 and the addition of one verse from Jeremiah 3:4.

From the New Testament, the reading is also double. We will be reading from Luke 13:1-9 and Mark 11:12-23. All these readings are essential for all of us as disciples of Yeshua. Of course, all the words of God from Genesis to Revelation are crucial, but especially for these crazy days and the events happening around us in the Middle East, the USA, and Europe, Our whole world is a mess, and the challenges are all challenging and stressful.

Today's news, Wednesday, July 31, 2024, is alarming, and we need earnest and sober prayer for Israel. Last night, Israel eliminated Ismael Hanniah, the arch-terrorist and one of the chief leaders of Hamas in Gaza. He was eliminated during his sleep in Teheran, Iran, in a protected secret apartment belonging to the Iranian security services. This elimination was just 24 hours after the elimination of the Chief of Staff of the Hezbollah in Lebanon, also while sleeping in a secret secured apartment in the neighborhood of the Dachia in Beirut, Lebanon. These eliminations were in response to the murder of 12 little children in a village in the Golan Heights. Hezbollah shot a big heavy rocket into the football field where these young children were training and playing. There is a bloody ping-pong "game" between Israel and the Iranian proxies like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both are governed, financed, and supplied with modern weapons that Iran manufactures and gets from China, North Korea, and Russia.

Please pray for Israel! Please don't stop praying. Every time you pray and thank God for your food, mention Israel and the people in Israel. On active duty, we have dozens of Jewish disciples of Yeshua in the Israeli military. Our Yudah was +80 days in Gaza and a few days on the Lebanese border, and he already has an appointment to show up north for active duty again very shortly. Please pray for the good angels of our Lord to surround our men and women in uniform and protect them like all of Israel's soldiers. Pray for God to reveal the evil schemes and hidden tunnels and traps that the enemy has hidden. Please help the Israeli army to continue to be the most moral in the world today. Please protect the civilian population in Gaza and Israel from harm and death.

Now, let's go to our Torah reading for this Shabbat!

In the portion Mattot in chapter 31, we find a new instruction in the Torah that the soldiers that go to battle have to give a portion of the booty that they capture in battle to the tribe of Levi, to the Levites, and also a gift of gratitude for the safe return of the soldiers who were in battle and had victory. This principle has been so alive and living in us, in Netivyah, for the last nine months. It is so often that what we read in God's Word, our Torah portions, and the portions from the Prophets are almost like reading our daily newspapers.

God has used Netivyah to bless our military in the most dramatic, generous, and super-valuable ways to provide needed equipment and supplies for our soldiers. I can say the following for sure. Netivyah is not the only ministry in Israel that has supplied and mobilized to provide much-needed and even strategic equipment for our men on the battlefields. I can say for sure that Netivyah was among the very first organizations that have mobilized to stand with the Israeli soldiers and provide tactical equipment like modern helmets and modern life-saving vests with modern bulletproof protection, and very hi-tech drones that, as the officers say, are life-saving for our men in the battlefield. The Lord has used Netivyah in Israel and has used Netivyah International to speak and encourage Christians to stand with Israel and help fight antisemitism.

In our Torah reading, we see the principles that have guided us, which Moses had commanded:

"Now the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: "Count up the plunder that was taken—of man and beast—you and Eleazar the priest and the chief fathers of the congregation; and divide the plunder into two parts, between those who took part in the war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. And levy a tribute for the LORD on the men of war who went out to battle: one of every five hundred of the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep; take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar, the priest as a heave offering to the LORD. And from the children of Israel's half, you shall take one of every fifty, drawn from the persons, the cattle, the donkeys, and the sheep, from all the livestock, and give them to the Levites who keep charge of the Tabernacle of the LORD." So, Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses." (Numbers 31:25-31 NKJV)

The verses teach a different principle for sharing with those serving the people and the Lord than the teaching in most Protestant churches, the daughters of Rome. Most churches teach that people ought to give 10% of their income to the church's work; however, this is an Old Testament principle that is commanded explicitly to Israel and specifically designed for the tribe of Levi and those who serve in the Tabernacle in the wilderness and later the temple in Jerusalem. This teaching is not found in the New Testament in the letters that the Apostles wrote to the Churches in Asia Minor and Europe. Interestingly, these churches vote hands down against anything commanded in the Torah and in the prophets in the Old Testament!

In this command of God to Moses and through Moses to all of Israel, we see that even gain and wealth gained in war as booty must be shared with the Levites who are serving God. Second, we see Israel as ONE NATION, with different tribes and different callings between the tribes. Also, the tribe of Levi is commanded to be servants of God for the people of Israel. I don't know and don't claim to command my Christian brothers and sisters what and where to give their financial contributions. However, the principle in this Torah reading is not too complicated to understand. Giving to the Lord's work in modern times is only a recommendation and a principle based on Paul's teaching in 2nd Corinthians, a principle that says that what you sow will also be reaping.

Christians would not need preachers and pastors to spread this good news if they believed this. They would be running with and banking on this divine principle that works in every area of human existence. We see that God commands Moses to command the people of Israel that gain from war and battle will be used to bless those who serve God and represent, teach, pray, and serve the people of God. People gave so much that God had to tell Moses – "it is enough," and tell the people to stop. What is interesting is the commander's contribution to their soldiers' safe return (chapter 31).

The next important principle is found in chapter 32 of Numbers, where we see three of the tribes go to Moses and tell him these words:

"Now the children of Reuben and the children of Gad had a very great multitude of livestock; and when they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, that indeed the region was a place for livestock, the children of Gad and the children of Reuben came and spoke to Moses, to Eleazar, the priest, and to the leaders of the congregation, saying, "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Shebam, Nebo, and Beon, the country which the LORD defeated before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock." Therefore, they said, "If we have found favor in your sight, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Do not take us over the Jordan." (Numbers 32:1-5 NKJV)

This request of the three-and-a-half tribes of Israel that want to stay east of the Jordan River is very selfish and self-serving. God doesn't stop them, gives them some very reasonable and interesting conditions, and allows them to keep these lands east of Jordan. What can we learn from these events? One thing that amazes me in the last few Sabbath Torah readings is that God is not a legalistic, mean, harsh God! In the last few weeks, we have seen God in a different light from how Christians picture God. Christians, generally speaking, picture the God of Israel as harsh – legalistic – demanding the impossible – requesting absolute obedience, judgment, and punishing with harsh punishments. They see the God of the New Testament as loving and kind and soft and gracious.

I remember the first English Bible I received when I arrived at Georgia Christian School in Valdosta, Georgia. In the back of the Bible, there were some maps and charts, one of which showed the difference between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament.These old charts don't exist anymore in most English Bibles. I searched and didn't find such charts.

The Old Testament God is a God of judgment and punishment.
The New Testament God is a God of love and grace.
In the Old Testament, God is not forgiving.
In the New Testament, God is forgiving.

In our reading, we see in more than one episode that God is very understanding and gracious, bending in favor of a request that is totally out of God's original promises and even different from God's promises to Abraham and our forefathers.

The God I see in the Torah is not a different God from the God who so loved the world that He sent his only begotten son as a sacrifice to save it.

Another idea from our Torah reading this Shabbat is that all of God's requests were from the three and a half Tribes who wanted to stay on the east side of the Jordan River in the land of Moab and northward. God wished to preserve, feed, and strengthen the unity of the nation of Israel. The unity of Israel was essential for God. The unity of the Body of Christ is a central theme in the New Testament. We see in the New Testament that unity is also significant for God and our Lord Yeshua. See, dear brothers, how we today emphasize unity and one identity under one God and One Savior and one Body, family, and community.

Here are some key passages that highlight its importance:

John 17:20-23: In Jesus' prayer for all believers, He emphasizes unity, praying that they may be one just as He and the Father are one. This unity is meant to show the world the truth of Jesus' mission.

"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one—I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me."*

Ephesians 4:1-6: Paul urges believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling, emphasizing the need to maintain unity through the Spirit in the bond of peace.

"As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

1 Corinthians 12:12-27: Paul uses the metaphor of the body to describe the church, emphasizing that all members are essential and should care for one another to maintain unity and function effectively.

"Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts forms one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so, the body is not made up of one part but of many. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."

These passages, among others, underscore that unity within the Body of Christ is crucial for the church's witness, effectiveness, and growth. It is presented not only as a desirable trait but as a vital element of Christian life and testimony. God allowed the three and a half tribes of Israel to stay on the east side of Jordan, but Israel's unity would have to be kept and honored by all sides, as would participation in peacetime and wartime.

A second Torah portion is read on this Shabbat, and the last Torah portion in the book of Numbers is named Massei. This fascinating text must be studied to understand how God works with people, an education I had never heard of in church. From the age of 16 in Georgia Christian School and through the years of College at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, and through thousands of hours and days on Sundays and Wednesday night church meetings, I never heard mention of the seven daughters of Zelophehad and the problem of daughters inheriting their father's property. There is a significant issue here in the Torah. As you might remember, the problem was first introduced to us in the last Shabbat's Torah portion, in the portion of Pinchas. There are two out-of-the-box teachings in that Torah portion, new principles that are so important for all of us to learn, especially as Bible Teachers. God rewarded Pinchas for taking the law into his own hands, resolving the problem, and stopping the plague by killing Zimri and Cozbi, who were having sex right at the entrance of the Tabernacle, while Moses and Aaron were standing at a total loss of what to do and how to deal with this outrageous event of rebellion.

Pinchas took the matter into his own hands and resolved it, but he did it outside the customary authority and without permission. In the Torah portion of Pinchas, another out-of-the-box request never made before was asked for Seven Sisters to inherit their father's property because the poor man had seven daughters and not one son—only the male children inherited from their father. Girls would get married to someone from another tribe. Fear was that property would not remain in the tribe, which initially received that territory for an everlasting inheritance. God understood the problem and understood the request of these seven daughters of Zelophehad.

Now, in our portion of Massei, the daughters come to Moses and receive the good news that God understood their problem, changed the laws of inheritance, and allowed women to inherit their families. This is terrific because I know God understands humanity and will change the Torah when it is no longer relevant or practicable. What a great and flexible and loving and understanding and gracious God we have; the creator of the Universe is not harsh, not difficult, and very, very loving. So loving that He sent His only begotten SON Yeshua, to die and be sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins of the whole world. The angels of God's presence must have looked into God's face in those moments and seen God scratch his head and say, "Those seven girls of Zelophehad are right; I should have seen this problem in my laws earlier. Thank you, dear daughters, of this poor man who had seven daughters and not one son! Thank you, dear Girls, for bringing this problem to my attention." This is a beautiful window into God's true character and nature. The God of Israel is so different from the view that Christians have of God the Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah; a lesson that all of us must remember is that our God is loving, gracious, kind, and patient with all of us His children.

Pray for Israel during these crazy days of war that are in great danger of spreading in the whole Middle East, including Iran, Turkey, and other countries, and might develop into a world war. This major world war could include Russia, China, the USA, and France; you name it… might join in this war….

Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry and Roeh Israel Congregation in Israel have an urgent need to repair the roof of their building before the rainy season starts. There is a significant problem with leaking water from the ceiling. Water leaks from the roof into our synagogue three floors down and must be fixed immediately. The only way to fix this water leak is to remove the whole roof and redo it right to seal and waterproof the roof. The estimated cost of this urgent repair work on our building in Jerusalem is around USD 100,000. It is significant repair work, and it has to be performed by experts, and it has to be finished before the end of August 2024. Please help.

Your prayers for brothers and sisters you don’t know personally is a pure love and building of the Body of the Messiah. It is Agape Love since you are doing this without any selfish interests and casting a vote in heaven for someone who is your brother. Still, you don't know them, and God looks at these prayers that are unselfish and genuine expression of love and care for another link in the long chain of love and faith that binds us together even though we might not know each other in this world.

When we all get to Heaven, it will be a joy to meet people we prayed for and sometimes even cried for. Brothers and sisters who are physically strangers but spiritually a part of the same body of Christ, I believe that one day we will have the privilege to sit together and share: "I remember praying for you to be healed!" "I remember praying for you to be safe when you were fighting in Gaza to free the hostages from the cruel hands of the terrorists of the Hamas in Gaza."

Pray for the following brothers and sisters who need divine grace and the gentle touch of the hand of God for healing and strength.

 Pray for the millions of victims of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition who have been forced to convert to the Catholic church and now want to return home to the land of Israel and to the faith of our fathers.

 update Bill C. is doing well. He is on a scheduled treatment plan and last weeks number show an improved reduction on the cancer markers. Pray for Jill supporting him. - We are grateful for the good news.

 Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
