이기는 자의 영

야고보가 엘리야에 대해 쓸 때, 그는 그가 우리와 같은 사람이라고 말했습니다(야고보서 5:17). 이 성경의 히브리어 버전에는 대부분의 영어 번역본에는 빠진 단어가 하나 더 있습니다. 그 빠진 단어는 엘리야가 위독한 상태에 있었음을 보여줍니다. 그 빠진 단어를 넣으면 그 문장을 엘리야는 우리와 같은 사람이었고 그가 고통당하고 있었다고 더 잘 이해할 수 있습니다. 엘리야는 무엇으로 고통당하고 있었을까요?

엘리야는 그를 통해 강력한 기적을 많이 행하신 주님과 깊은 관계를 맺고 있었습니다. 우리는 성경에서 그가 주님과 교통하며 행했던 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 엘리야가 더 밀접히 주님과 동행할수록, 그 자신은 사람들의 진영에서 더욱 고립되고 멀어져 있는 것을 발견했습니다. 엘리야는 그의 주변에 있는 사람들에게 하나님 - יהוה (여호와)만 숭배할 것을 심어주려 노력했습니다. 그의 노력에도 불구하고, 아합왕과 이세벨 왕비를 포함하여 사람들은 자신들을 우상 숭배와 그 지역의 가짜 신들 숭배에 노출시키기로 선택했습니다.

하나님께서는 엘리야를 통해 권능의 역사를 행하셨는데요, 가장 극적인 기적 중 하나는 하나님께서 비가 내리지 않은 3년 끝에 가뭄과 기근 가운데 엘리야를 갈멜산으로 보내셨을 때, “하나님의 불”이 하늘로부터 떨어진 사건이었습니다. 그러자 모든 백성이 그것을 보고, 엎드려 말했습니다, “여호와 그는 하나님이시로다 여호와 그는 하나님이시로다!” 이는 그분 말고는 다른 하나님이 없다는 뜻입니다. 곧바로 비가 오기 시작했습니다. (열왕기상 18:38-39, 45)

우리는 해피 엔딩을 좋아합니다. 예를 들자면, 이 기적과 같은 이 사건들 후에는 모든 사람의 마음이 하나님께로 돌이킨 것을 보고 싶을 것입니다. 그런데 이것이 이해를 초월하는 초자연적 현상이었음에도 불구하고, 그런 일은 일어나지 않았습니다. 큰 승리 대신 우리는 저 선지자가 무너져 심지어 죽고 싶어 하는 것을 봅니다. 사람이 하나님의 권능 대 사람의 완고함을 보게 되면 참 답답한 노릇입니다.

그런 다음 우리는 엘리야가 40주야를 걸어서 남쪽 광야를 향해 가는 것을 봅니다. 그는 출발하기 전에 천사가 남긴 한 끼를 먹고 그것으로 지탱했습니다. 저는 그가 하나님과 그분의 약속으로부터 돌아선 이스라엘 민족에게서 느끼는 고통과 실망에 내몰리어 걸어가는 동안 그의 마음에는 무엇이 있었을까 궁금합니다. 엘리야는 그 자신의 복지에 대해서는 걱정하는 것 같지 않습니다. 40일 여정 끝에 하나님께서 그에게 그가 온 길을 되돌아가서 세 사람에게, 그 중 하나는 그의 제자인 엘리사에게 기름 부으라는 명령하셨을 때, 그는 전환점을 맞게 됩니다.

우리가 세례 요한을 보면, 성경은 엘리야의 영이 그에게 있었다고 말합니다. 메시아 예슈아께서 다시 오실 때 그분의 오심을 선포하는 사람은 엘리야일 것입니다. 엘리야가 갈등을 하기는 했어도, 그는 하나님께 아주 헌신된 사람이었기에 상황을 뛰어넘어 일어나 선지자 이상의 삶의 방식을 유지할 수 있었습니다. (마태복음 11:9, 14)

제 기도는 우리 각 사람이 그와 같은 방식으로 우리의 온 마음과 영혼으로 하나님과 동행할 수 있게 되는 것입니다. 이것은 원수가 모든 가능한 수단을 동원하여 하나님의 택한 백성을 대적하여 말하는 요즈음, 예슈아를 따르는 자들의 믿음이 여러 모로 도전받고 있는 때에 특히 더 그렇습니다.

우리는, 우리의 육신의 눈이 무엇을 보든, 우리의 눈을 그분께 돌리고 그분의 약속에 굳게 설 것을 기억해야 합니다. 우리가 우리의 상황이 아니라 우리 안에 거하시는 하나님의 영의 인도를 받고, 이기는 자의 영으로 좌절을 이기기를 기도합니다.

Spirit of An Overcomer

When Jacob, known as James, wrote about Elijah, he said that he was a man like us. James 5:17. There is another word in the Hebrew version of this scripture which is missed in most English translations. That missing word shows that Elijah was in a critical state. With that missing word in place we can better understand the sentence as, that Elijah was human like us and that he was suffering. What was Elijah suffering from?

Elijah had a deep relationship with the Lord who performed many mighty miracles through him. We find in the Bible that he communicated and walked with the Lord. The closer Elijah was drawn to his walk with the Lord, the more isolated and far from the camp of the people he found himself. Elijah tried to instill in those around him the worship of God alone - יהוה (Yahweh). Despite his attempts, the people - including King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, chose to open themselves to the worship of the idols and false gods in the area.

God did mighty things through Elijah, one of the most dramatic miracles being when He sent him to Mt. Carmel, in the midst of a drought and famine after three years without rain. 'The fire of God came down from heaven. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”' This means there is no other God but Him. Soon after, it began to rain. 1Kings 18:38-39, 45

We like happy endings, for instance - we would like to see that after these miraculous events, everyone’s heart turned to God. However, even though it was supernatural beyond comprehension, this was not the case. Instead of a major victory we see the prophet of God broken and even wanting to die. It’s frustrating when you see the mightiness of God versus man’s stubbornness.

We then find Elijah on a journey by foot for forty days and nights toward the southern desert. He was sustained by the one meal, left by an angel, which he ate before setting out. I wonder what was in his heart while walking, driven by the pain and disappointment he must have felt from the nation of Israel who had turned from God and His promises. It seems as if Elijah wasn't concerned about his own well being. After the forty day journey, he came to a turning point when God commanded him to go back the way he had come and to anoint three people, one of them Elijah's disciple Elisha.

When we look at John the Baptist, the bible says that the spirit of Elijah was on him. When Messiah Yeshua returns, it will be Elijah who will proclaim His coming. Even though Elijah was struggling, he was so dedicated to God, that he was able to rise above the situation and maintain a lifestyle of one who is more than a prophet. Matt. 11:9,14

My prayer is that each of us will be able to walk with God in such a way, with all our mind and soul. This is especially true in these days when the enemy is speaking against his chosen people through every vehicle possible and during a time when the faith of Yeshua's followers is being challenged from every angle.

We must remember to turn our eyes to Him, standing in His promises; no matter what our physical eyes see. May we be led not by our situations but by the leading of the Spirit of God which dwells in us. Victory over discouragement, the spirit of an overcomer.
