유대력 일 년에는 열두 달이 있고 3년마다 한 번씩 열세 달이 있습니다. 유대전통에 따르면, 엘룰월은 티슈레이월 1일 나팔절(로쉬 하샤나)을 준비하는 회개의 달입니다. 티슈레이월은 유대력으로 새 해가 시작되는 달이며 레위기 23장의 일곱 절기 중 세 절기가 이 달에 있습니다.
유대전승에 따르면, 하나님께서 그 날 사람을 창조하셨고, 세상을 심판하실 날도 이 날입니다. 이 날은 생명책이 펼쳐지는 때이기도 합니다. 그래서 엘룰월이 회개의 시간으로 여겨지는 것이며, 이 시기동안 회개의 기도가 더해집니다. 저는 이 지난 달에 예루살렘에 있었는데요, 매일 아침 저녁으로 기도 소리를 들을 수 있었습니다. 사람들은 기도하기 위해 일찍 일어났고 밤새도록 기도하기도 했습니다. 이 모든 것은 유대문화에서 유대력 새해 로쉬 하샤나인 나팔절을 맞기 위해 마음을 준비하는 것입니다. 나팔절부터 이 달의 열째 날까지 기도가 집중적이 되어 욤 키푸르에 절정에 이르는데요, 욤 키푸르는 유대전승에 의하면 생명책이 덮이는 날입니다. 욤 키푸르는 문자적으로 속죄일입니다(레 23:27). “그마르 하티마 토바(생명책에 영원히 새겨지기를!)”라고 말하며 서로 인사하는 것이 관례입니다. 그 의미는 하나님께서 당신의 마음을 보시고 당신이 진실히 회개하고 변화되었다고 보시기를 바라며, 그분께서 당신에게 이 새 해에 생명책에 기록하시고 인봉하시기를 바란다는 뜻입니다. 생명책을 언급한 구절은 하나님의 말씀 전체에서 찾아볼 수 있습니다. 모세가 출애굽기 32:31-33에서,

그들의 죄악에 죄악을 더하사 주의 공의에 들어오지 못하게 하소서 그들을 생명책에서 지우사 의인들과 함께 기록되지 말게 하소서. 누가복음 10:20에 예슈아의 말씀이 인용되었습니다.
그러나 귀신들이 너희에게 항복하는 것으로 기뻐하지 말고 너희 이름이 하늘에 기록된 것으로 기뻐하라 하시니라. 마지막이지만 사소하지 않은 구절은 요한계시록 20:15입니다.
누구든지 생명책에 기록되지 못한 자는 불못에 던져지더라. 생명책에 대한 유대적 개념과 문화를 더 깊은 차원에서 이해하기 위해서 저는 아래 성경구절들을 더 추가했습니다. 다니엘 12:1 그 때에 네 민족을 호위하는 큰 군주 미가엘이 일어날 것이요 또 환난이 있으리니 이는 개국 이래로 그 때까지 없던 환난일 것이며 그 때에 네 백성 중 책에 기록된 모든 자가 구원을 받을 것이라. 시편 56:8 나의 유리함을 주께서 계수하셨사오니 나의 눈물을 주의 병에 담으소서 이것이 주의 책에 기록되지 아니하였나이까? 시편 139:16 내 형질이 이루어지기 전에 주의 눈이 보셨으며 나를 위하여 정한 날이 하루도 되기 전에 주의 책에 다 기록이 되었나이다. 말라기 3:16 그 때에 여호와를 경외하는 자들이 피차에 말하매 여호와께서 그것을 분명히 들으시고 여호와를 경외하는 자와 그 이름을 존중히 여기는 자를 위하여 여호와 앞에 있는 기념책에 기록하셨느니라. 생각의 고리를 완성하기 위해서 신약성경에 몇 구절을 더 봅시다. 히브리서 12:22-23 그러나 너희가 이른 곳은 시온 산과 살아 계신 하나님의 도성인 하늘의 예루살렘과 천만 천사와 하늘에 기록된 장자들의 모임과 교회와 만민의 심판자이신 하나님과 및 온전하게 된 의인의 영들과 빌립보서 4:3 또 참으로 나와 멍에를 같이한 네게 구하노니 복음에 나와 함께 힘쓰던 저 여인들을 돕고 또한 글레멘드와 그 외에 나의 동역자들을 도우라 그 이름들이 생명책에 있느니라. 요한계시록 3:5 이기는 자는 이와 같이 흰 옷을 입을 것이요 내가 그 이름을 생명책에서 결코 지우지 아니하고 그 이름을 내 아버지 앞과 그의 천사들 앞에서 시인하리라. 요한계시록 13:8 죽임을 당한 어린 양의 생명책에 창세 이후로 이름이 기록되지 못하고 이 땅에 사는 자들은 다 그 짐승에게 경배하리라. 요한계시록 17:8 네가 본 짐승은 전에 있었다가 지금은 없으나 장차 무저갱으로부터 올라와 멸망으로 들어갈 자니 땅에 사는 자들로서 창세 이후로 그 이름이 생명책에 기록되지 못한 자들이 이전에 있었다가 지금은 없으나 장차 나올 짐승을 보고 놀랍게 여기리라. 요한계시록 21:27 무엇이든지 속된 것이나 가증한 일 또는 거짓말하는 자는 결코 그리로 들어가지 못하되 오직 어린 양의 생명책에 기록된 자들만 들어가리라. 메시아닉 유대인으로서 저는 제 동족을 보며 저들의 눈이 열려 이미 저들의 영원한 구원을 제공하시어, 모두가 생명책에 기록되고 인봉되게 하신 그분을 보도록 간구하는 중보로 하나님 앞에 나오지 않을 수 없습니다. 그분은 생명책이십니다. 새 해 복 많이 받으세요. ------------------------------------------------------- The Book of Life
There are twelve months in the Jewish calendar year and once every three years there are thirteen months. The month of Elul, according to Jewish tradition, is a month of repentance in preparation for the Feast of Trumpets (Rosh Hashanah) which falls on the first of Tishrei. The month of Tishrei is the beginning of the Jewish year and three of the seven feasts of Leviticus 23 occur during that month.
According to Jewish culture, God created man on that day and that is the day that He will judge the world. It is also during that time that the Book of Life is open; which is why the month of Elul is taken as a time for repentance; during which time additional prayers of repentance are added. I was in Jerusalem this past month and I could hear the prayers every morning and evening. People rose early to pray and prayed through the night as well. All of this to prepare their heart for the Day of the Trumpet which in Jewish culture is Rosh HaShanah; the beginning of the Jewish New Year. From the Day of Trumpets till the tenth of the month the prayers intensify until they reach a climax on Yom Kippur, when according to Jewish tradition, the Book of Life is closed. Yom Kippur literally means, day of atonement. (Leviticus 23:27) It is customary to greet one another with the saying G’mar Chatimah Tovah, (may you be inscribed in the Book of Life for good). The meaning of this is that God has looked at your heart and found you to be trult repentant and changed. That He has granted you this coming year and sealed you in the Book of Life. References to the Book of Life are found throughout the Word of God. Moses in Exodus 32:32-33 Then Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Alas, this people has committed a great sin, and they have made a god of gold for themselves. But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your book which You have written!” The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. King David in Psalm 69:27-28 Add iniquity to their iniquity,
And may they not come into Your righteousness.
May they be blotted out of the book of life
And may they not be recorded with the righteous. Yeshua is quoted in Luke 10:20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.” Last but not least, Revelation 20:15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. To understand the Jewish concept and culture regarding the Book of Life on an even deeper level, I’ve include these additional scripture references. Daniel 12:1 “Now at that time Michael, the great prince who stands guard over the sons of your people, will arise. And there will be a time of distress such as never occurred since there was a nation until that time; and at that time your people, everyone who is found written in the book, will be rescued. Psalm 56:8 You have taken account of my wanderings;
Put my tears in Your bottle.
Are they not in Your book? Psalm 139:16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written
The days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them. Malachi 3:16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord gave attention and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who fear the Lord and who esteem His name. In order to complete the cycle of thought, lets look at further references in the New Testament. Hebrews 12:22-23 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, Philippians 4:3 Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. Revelation 3:5 He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Revelation 13:8 All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. Revelation 17:8 “The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to come up out of the abyss and go to destruction. And those who dwell on the earth, whose name has not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will wonder when they see the beast, that he was and is not and will come. Revelation 21:27 and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. As a Messianic Jew, looking towards my people, I am compelled to come before God in intercession asking that their eyes would be opened to the One who has already made provision for their eternal salvation; that all may be sealed, written in the book of life.
