예루살렘 기도 목록 – 2021년 8월 12일

이번 안식일 토라 포션은 “쇼프팀”(“판사들”)이라고 부릅니다. 읽는 부분은 신명기 16:18~21:9입니다. 선지서에서 읽는 부분은 이사야 51:12~52:12입니다. 신약성경에서는 요한복음 14:9-20을 읽습니다.
저는 여러분에게, 제가 열여섯 살부터 59년 동안(제가 지금 일흔다섯이니까요) 성경을 읽고 공부해오고 있지만, 제가 성경을 펼치고 어떤 본문 말씀을 읽을 때마다 전에 최소 수백 번 읽었어도 언제나 새로운 것이 튀어나와 흥미로 제 심령을 점화시킨다는 것을 나눠야 할 것 같습니다. 비결은 간단합니다. 그저 읽지만 말고, 생각하고 의구심을 갖고 조사하고, 성령님께 깨달을 수 있도록 도와주시며 모든 진리로 인도해 달라고 기도하십시오. 이번 안식일 토라 포션에는 오늘날 유대교에서 일어나고 있고, 기독교에서도 마땅히 일어나야 하지만 그렇지 않은 일의 상당 부분의 기초가 되는 말씀이 좀 있습니다. “구약 성경”이라고 부르는 히브리어 성경에는 회당이나 랍비나 바리새인이나 사두개인이나 에세네파나 예쉬바(유대교 신학교)가 없습니다. 이것들은 신구약 중간기에 가서야 생기기 시작한 제도라서, 신약 성경에만 언급됩니다. 그렇지만 사도들의 글에서 코셔가 된 이런 제도들은 모두 이번 안식일 토라 포션의 한 본문에 근거하고 있습니다. 그 본문입니다: “네 성중에서 서로 피를 흘렸거나 다투었거나 구타하였거나 서로 간에 고소하여 네가 판결하기 어려운 일이 생기거든 너는 일어나 네 하나님 여호와께서 택하실 곳으로 올라가서 레위 사람 제사장과 당시 재판장에게 나아가서 물으라 그리하면 그들이 어떻게 판결할지를 네게 가르치리니 여호와께서 택하신 곳에서 그들이 네게 보이는 판결의 뜻대로 네가 행하되 그들이 네게 가르치는 대로 삼가 행할 것이니 곧 그들이 네게 가르치는 율법의 뜻대로, 그들이 네게 말하는 판결대로 행할 것이요 그들이 네게 보이는 판결을 어겨 좌로나 우로나 치우치지 말 것이니라 사람이 만일 무법하게 행하고 네 하나님 여호와 앞에 서서 섬기는 제사장이나 재판장에게 듣지 아니하거든 그 사람을 죽여 이스라엘 중에서 악을 제하여 버리라 그리하면 온 백성이 듣고 두려워하여 다시는 무법하게 행하지 아니하리라.” – 신명기 17:8-13 이 본문을 역사적 맥락에서 단순히 이해하면, 하나님께서, 어떤 사람이 토라 본문에서 직접적으로 다루지 않은 특정 문제가 있을 경우에 그 사람이 그 당시의 권위자들, 즉 판사(사사)나 제사장이나 레위인이나 정치가(관원)에게 가서 그의 문제를 명쾌히 함을 받을 수 있는 근거를 주시는 것입니다. 그 사람이 조언이 필요하면 이것이 그가 가서 조언을 얻고 그의 문제에 대한 명쾌한 설명을 얻을 수 있는 근거입니다. 그러나 이 토라 명령의 대가는, 사람이 당시 자기가 사는 곳의 권위자들에게 가서 조언이나 토라에 대한 결정을 구했으면, 그 조언을 진지하게 받아들이고 그들의 지시에 따라 행해야 한다는 것입니다. 저는 사람이 가서 자기 문제에 대한 답을 얻었으면 그 지시에 따라 행할 의무가 있다는 주님의 명령을 잘 이해할 수 있을 것 같습니다. 사람이 그냥 가서 이들 관원들의 시간을 허비하고 돌아와서는 자기가 원하는 대로 할 수는 없습니다. 이들 박식한 관원들이 조언한 것을 진지하게 받아들이고 그들의 조언을 사용하여 문제를 해결하십시오. 여기 신명기의 하나님의 지시에 근거하여 이스라엘이 바벨론으로 유배되었던 신구약 중간기에 회당이 세워졌고, 법원 제도인 산헤드린이 생겼고, 모든 랍비 제도가 발전했습니다. 이스라엘이 에스라와 느헤미야와 함께 바벨론에서 돌아오고, 예루살렘 성전은 완전히 파손되고 혼돈이었을 때, 이번 토라 포션의 이 장의 좋은 규율은 진지하게 받아들여졌습니다. 바리새인들은 엄격한 무리로 세워졌습니다. 그들은 이스라엘 땅으로 돌아가 유대적 생활방식과 성전을 회복시키고 성전을 최고의 예배 장소로 사용하고 싶어 했습니다. 그러나 모세와 광야 시대 그들의 단순한 생활방식의 때로부터 오랜 세월이 흘렀습니다. 지금 그들은 자기들의 땅에서 성벽이 둘린 성 안에 살고 있고, 농경지와 산업이 있습니다. 주님의 토라에 따라 살며 그에 충실하기 위한 지침이 필요한 새로운 문제들이 생깁니다. 그래서 이번 토라 포션의 이 장에 있는 모세의 지시가 때마침 적절하고 소용이 됩니다. 그러나 이스라엘 사람들이 바벨론 유배에서 이스라엘 땅과 예루살렘으로 돌아왔을 때, 예루살렘은 폐허였고 성전은 수선이 잘 된 상태가 아니었고, 경제도 아주 형편없는 상태였습니다. 이 본문 말씀은 마침 그들에게 전에 이스라엘이나 유대교에 없던 새로운 제도를 만들 근거를 분명히 허용해 주는 말씀이었습니다. 그들은 배움의 집(베이트 미드라쉬)을 세웠는데, 에스라와 느헤미야와 레위인들이 예루살렘에서 초막절 직전에 토라를 대중 앞에서 읽었을 때 그들은 처음으로 토라 낭독을 들었기 때문입니다(느헤미야 7,8장 참조). 바리새인들은 토라를 진지하게 받아들였고 그것을 사용하여 하나님의 말씀을 유대인들의 삶의 권위로 다시금 굳건히 세운 사람들이었습니다. 그러나 세상은 다소 변했고, 바벨론에서 예루살렘과 유대로 돌아온 사람들은 토라와 하나님의 말씀에 분명한 해답이 없는 필요들이 있었습니다. 성전과 제사장들과 레위인들 같은 토라의 제도들은 지금 제1성전 시대 때의 제도들과 똑같지가 않습니다. 그래서 바리새인들이 한 것은 마틴 루터가 한 것과 같았습니다. 그들은 토라를 제사장들과 레위인들 뿐만 아니라 대중도 다가갈 수 있고 이해하기 쉽게 만들었습니다. 이제 토라는 연구하고 배우고 스스로의 결론을 내릴 수 있도록 누구에게든 열려 있게 되었습니다. 이제 토라에 관한 결정은 모든 사소한 문제에 대한 것까지 신적 계시를 기다리는 것이 아니라 랍비들의 논의와 심의를 통해 이루어집니다. 이 모든 것은 이번 안식일 토라 포션의 한 본문에 기초하고 있는 것입니다. 예슈아께서는 갈릴리 지방의 모든 회당에서 설교하는 바리새인 랍비 역할을 하셨고, 사람들은 예슈아로부터 들은 말씀을 좋아했습니다: “예수께서 성령의 능력으로 갈릴리에 돌아가시니 그 소문이 사방에 퍼졌고 친히 그 여러 회당에서 가르치시매 뭇 사람에게 칭송을 받으시더라.” – 누가복음 4:14,15 이 본문에 “…그 여러 회당에서 가르치시매 뭇 사람에게 칭송을 받으시더라.” 했으므로, 예슈아께서 랍비셨고 여러 회당들에서 말씀을 가르치시도록 초청받으셨음이 분명합니다. 예슈아께서는 이번 토라 포션의 이 본문, 신명기 17:8-13을 사용하여 그분의 제자들과 그 때 주위에 있던 다른 이들에게 다음과 같은 지시를 주십니다: “이에 (예슈아)예수께서 무리와 제자들에게 말씀하여 이르시되 서기관들과 바리새인들이 모세의 자리에 앉았으니 그러므로 무엇이든지 그들이 말하는 바는 행하고 지키되 그들이 하는 행위는 본받지 말라 그들은 말만 하고 행하지 아니하며” – 마태복음 23:1-3 이 본문의 3절은 정확히 신명기 17:10 말씀을 인용한 것입니다: “여호와께서 택하신 곳에서 그들이 네게 보이는 판결의 뜻대로 네가 행하되 그들이 네게 가르치는 대로 삼가 행할 것이니” – 신명기 17:10 예슈아께서 바리새인들을 처음으로 “위선자들”이라고 부른 분은 아닙니다. 그리고 분명히, 바리새인들을 “위선자들”이라고 부른 마지막 유대인도 아닙니다. 저는 그들이 바리새인이었고 자기 당파를 똑같은 비문으로 부른 왕들과 랍비들을 나열할 수 있을 것입니다. 저는 제가 아는 기독교인 형제자매들 중 어떤 사람들을 한 번 이상 “위선자들”이라고 부른 적이 있습니다. 여러분은 제게 왜 제가 아주 많이 사랑하는 기독교인 형제자매들 중 몇 사람을 “위선자들”이라고 불렀느냐고 질문하실 수 있으실 것 같습니다. 이유는 아주 간단합니다. 제가 제 기독교인 형제자매들을 너무 사랑하기 때문에 그들에 대한 기대치가 높은데, 그들이 종교적 위선의 수준으로 떨어지고, 가짜 영적 생활을 사는 복음주의 문화 경향과 유행에 끌려가며, 매주 일요일에는 월요일이 그들이 일하는 다른 요일과는 다를 것처럼 행세하는 것을 제가 보았기 때문입니다. 예슈아는 바리새인이셨고 바울은 분명하게 자신이 바리새인이라고 말했습니다. 마태복음 23장의 예슈아의 이 가르침에서 큰 질문은, 21세기의 우리는 마태복음 23장의 예슈아의 가르침을 가지고 어떻게 하게 되어 있는가? 입니다. 우리는 대부분의 기독교계 복음주의자들, 오순절파, 그리스도의 교회들, 침례교인들, 감리교인들 등등처럼 그것을 무시할 것인가? 저는 제가 아는 기독교인 형제들 대부분이 붉은 글씨로 된 예슈아의 말씀을 읽고 바리새인들을 위선자처럼 군다고 비난하고 나오지만 본인들도 예슈아께서 그분이 속한 무리인 바리새인들을 비난하신 바로 그대로 하고 있다는 것을 말씀드릴 수 있을 것 같습니다. 친애하는 기독교인 형제자매님들, 저는 제 유대인 형제자매들을 사랑하는 것 못지않게 여러분을 사랑합니다. 제가 여러분을 사랑하기 때문에 저는 이 진리의 말을 쓰는 것이 부끄럽지도 두렵지도 않습니다. 우리가 예슈아의 가르침을 무시하고 그저 십자가에 달린 유대인을 숭배하면서 예슈아를 그 십자가에서 결코 내리지 않고 그분을 유대인의 왕이요 우리 삶의 왕이라고 왕관 씌울 수 있겠습니까? 우리가 성경의 붉은 글씨본을 무시하면서 이것은 그냥 하나님의 아들이 예루살렘 거리에서, 갈릴리 언덕에서, 갈릴리 호숫가에서 한 말일 뿐이라고 치부해 버릴 수 있겠습니까? 우리는 그냥, 이것은 “옛 것”이고 우리는 지금 중국에서 만든 아이폰과 중국이나 대만에서 만든 노트북 컴퓨터를 가지고, 역시나 중국에서 만든 코로나바이러스 전염병에서 우리를 지키고자 같은 곳에서 만든 마스크를 쓰고 사는 현대 사회에 살고 있다, 우리가 이스라엘이라고 해야 할지 팔레스타인이라고 해야 할지도 모르는 먼 나라에서 2,000년 전에 살았던 유대인은 필요치 않다고 말할 수도 있을 것입니다. 저는 제가 “어려운 문제”를 쓰고 있다는 것을 압니다. 그렇지만 이 “어려운 문제”는, 여섯 시간 동안 로마 십자가에 달리고 예루살렘 언덕에 피가 배어든 땅에 묻혔다가 약 72시간 후에 바위에 판 무덤에서 나와 다시 이스라엘 땅을 거니시고 갈릴리 호숫가에서 그분의 어부 제자들을 위해 아쉬케나지 물고기 아침식사를 준비해 주셨던 그 유대인에 대한 깊은 사랑과 헌신에서 쓴 것입니다. 여러분은 제가 여러분께 글을 쓰는 것은 제가 여러분을 사랑하기 때문이며, 제가 여러분의 주님과의 개인적 연합을 믿기 때문이고, 제가 그 무엇으로도 여러분을 비난하지 않기 때문입니다. 그러나 저는 정말로 서구권 대부분의 교회 지도자들이 창세기부터 요한계시록까지 하나님의 말씀의 권고를 전부 다 가르치지 않는 것에 대해 비난하는 것입니다. 저는 개인의 유익은 거의 없이 큰 교회를 만드는 것에 더 관심 있고 예슈아(예수님) 시대 사두개인들이 했던 일을 하고 있는 지도자들을 비난하는 것입니다. 단연코 저의 일반화에 예외가 많이 있습니다. 저도 일반 규칙에 분명하고 빛나는 예외이며 결코 위선적이지 않으며 주님과 그분의 교회에 순전히 헌신된 삶을 살며 이스라엘을 사랑하고 네티비야를 사랑하고 후원하는 지도자들과 목사들과 장로들을 많이 알고 있습니다. 저는 모든 지도자들과 목사님들과 장로님들이 제 말로 인해 마음이 상하지 않으며, 스스로를 살피고 시간을 들여 다윗왕처럼 되어 실수를 해도 주님으로 하여금 여러분이 그것을 바로 잡고 여러분의 사역과 의도의 순수성을 회복하도록 도와주시게 해드리는 노력을 하도록 축복합니다. 우리 중 누구든 결코 너무 늦는 일은 없으며, 아무도 예외 없이 우리 모두는 몇 달마다 혹은 적어도 일 년에 한 번은 마태복음 23장을 읽고 우리가 다른 사람들에게 설교하면서 우리가 말한 것을 하지는 않는 것에 관하여 우리가 어디에 서 있는지 자문해봐야 합니다. 하나님께서 제 형제자매님이신 여러분 모두에게 복 주시기를 축복합니다! 저는 여러분 모두를 사랑합니다. 제가 이 기도 목록으로 여러분 중 누구든 마음을 상하게 했다면 부디 여러분과 제게 호의를 베풀어주시고, 저를 위해서 그리고 예루살렘과 이스라엘과 여러분의 나라를 위해 기도하며 주님께 곧게 펴고 일어나 바르게 날 수 있는 열심과 힘을 주시도록 구하시기 바랍니다. 이 전 세계적 전염병으로 인해 저는 날마다 “주님, 속히 오시옵소서!” 기도합니다.

아주 힘든 이 때에 네티비야를 위해, 이스라엘 사람들에게 선을 행하며 그들을 축복하고 먹이고 지지해줄 기회를 위해 기도하고 후원해 주십시오. 이스라엘에서 이 어려운 시절에 어려움에 처한 이들의 수가 몇 배로 늘었습니다.
네티비야는 시간과 돈이 드는 많은 일과 도전들과, 하나님께서 네티비야 앞에 두시는 필요들과 기회들을 감당할 수 있는 스텝이 더 필요합니다.
코로나바이러스가 전 세계적으로, 그리고 이스라엘에서도 다시 창궐하면서 새로운 봉쇄 위협이 생기고 있기에 이스라엘은 더 기도가 필요하고 네티비야도 여러분의 기도와 후원이 필요합니다. 저희는 예슈아의 유대인 및 아랍인 제자들이 대학교에서 수학할 수 있게 하는 장학금을 줄이지 않으려고 최선을 다하고 있습니다. 저희는 저희 차세대 제자들의 기준을 세우는 것이 최우선이라고 믿습니다.
주님께서 우리 형제자매님들 중 어떤 이들을 사용하여 이 프로젝트를 도와주시지 않으시면 저희는 내년도에 학생들 지원 비율을 50% 이상 줄여야 할 것입니다. 네티비야는 40년 사역 동안 한 번도 빚을 진 적이 없고, 앞으로도 어떤 프로젝트든, 심지어 이스라엘의 믿는 자들의 미래에 대한 이 중요한 투자에 대해서도 빚을 질 계획이 없습니다.

The Jerusalem Prayer List – August 12, 2021

The Torah reading for this Shabbat is called Shoftim, (“judges”). The reading is from Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9. From the prophets the reading is from Isaiah 51:12 - 52:12. From the New Testament we are reading from the Gospel of John 14:9-20.
I must share with you that although I have been reading and studying the Bible since the age of 16, that is 59 years, and now I am 75 years old, and yet, every time that I open the Bible and read texts that I have read at least hundreds of times before, and still there is always something new that pops up and fires my soul with excitement. The trick is simple, don’t just read, think, doubt, examine, and ask for the Holy Spirit to help you understand, and lead you to all truth. In our reading this Shabbat there are some of the bases for so much of what is going on in Judaism today and so much that ought to be going on in Christianity, but it does not. In the Hebrew Bible what is called “The Old Testament” there are no synagogues, no rabbis, no Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, or yeshivas. These are institutions that are born into existence only in the inter-testamental period, and therefore are mentioned in the New Testament. But, these institutions, that are made kosher in the apostolic writings, are all based on a text from our reading of the Torah this Shabbat. This is the text: “If a matter arises which is too hard for you to judge, between degrees of guilt for bloodshed, between one judgment or another, or between one punishment or another, matters of controversy within your gates, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the Lord your God chooses. And you shall come to the priests, the Levites, and to the judge there in those days, and inquire of them; they shall pronounce upon you the sentence of judgment. You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the Lord chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you. According to the sentence of the law in which they instruct you, according to the judgment which they tell you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left from the sentence which they pronounce upon you. Now the man who acts presumptuously and will not heed the priest who stands to minister there before the Lord your God, or the judge, that man shall die. So, you shall put away the evil from Israel. And all the people shall hear and fear, and no longer act presumptuously.” – Deuteronomy 17:8-13 [NKJV] In the simple understanding of this text in its historical context, God is providing stations where a person who has a particular problem that is not directly addressed in the text of the Torah, that person can go to the authorities of his own day, the judge, the priest, the Levite, or the policeman (officer) and get a clarification of his question. The man needs advice, and these are the stations where he can go to and get advice and clarification to his question. However, the price of this Torah command is that if you do go to the authorities in your time and in your place and ask the advice or a ruling of the Torah, you are obligated to receive and take the advice seriously and do according to their instruction. I can understand well the Lord’s command that if you go and get an answer to your question you have an obligation to do according to their instruction. You just don’t go and waste the time of these officials and then turn and do as you wish. Take seriously what these learned officials have advised you and use their advice to resolve your problem. On the basis of this instruction of God here in Deuteronomy, the synagogue was established, and the court system, the Sanhedrin, was established, and the whole rabbinical system was developed in the inter-testamental period, when Israel was in exile in Babylon. When they returned from Babylon with Ezra and Nehemiah, the Temple in Jerusalem was in total disarray and disrepair, these good rules from our chapter are taken seriously. The Pharisees were established as a puritan group. They wanted to return to the Land of Israel and restore the Jewish lifestyle and the Temple and returned to use it for a high place of worship. However, much time has passed from the days of Moses and their simple lifestyle in the wilderness. Now they have lived in their own land and in cities with walls, and they have farms, and industry. New questions come up that need guidance to live and to stay faithful to the Torah of the Lord. So, these instructions of Moses in our chapter are apropos in place and needed. However, when the Israelites returned from the Babylonian exile they came back to the land and to Jerusalem that was in ruins, the Temple was not in good repair, the economy was in very bad shape. This text gave them an opportunity that apparently allowed them the basis to establish new institutions that didn’t exist in Israel or Judaism before. They established houses of learning (Beit Midrash) because they heard the reading of the Torah for the first time when Ezra and Nehemiah and the Levites read it in public (see Nehemiah chapters 7,8) just before the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. The Pharisees were the people who took the Torah seriously and used it for the reestablishment of the word of God as the authority for the lives of the Jewish people. However, the world had changed some and the people who returned from Babylon to Jerusalem and to Judea had needs that the Torah and the Word of God had no clear answers for. The Torah institutions, like the Temple and the priests and Levites were not now the same as they had been during the first Temple period. So, what the Pharisees did was like what Martin Luther did, they made the Torah approachable and accessible to the public and not only to the priests and the Levites. Now, the Torah is open to anyone to study and learn and draw his own conclusions. Decisions regarding the Torah are now made through discussion and deliberation among rabbis and not by waiting for divine revelation for every little issue. All this is based on the one text from our Torah reading this Shabbat. Yeshua functioned as a Pharisee rabbi who preached in all the synagogues in the Galilee, and people loved what they heard from Yeshua: “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding regions. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” – Luke 4:14,15 [NKJV] It is clear from these texts that Yeshua was a rabbi and was invited to teach in the synagogues as the text says, “…taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” Yeshua uses our text from Deuteronomy 17:8-13 to give the following instructions to His disciples and to the others that were around at that moment: “Then (Yeshua) Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples, saying: ‘The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do.’” – Matthew 23:1-3 This phrase in verse 3, is an exact quotation from the Hebrew of Deuteronomy 17:10, “You shall do according to the sentence which they pronounce upon you in that place which the Lord chooses. And you shall be careful to do according to all that they order you.” – Deuteronomy 17:10 [NKJV] Yeshua was not the first to call the Pharisees “hypocrites.” And for sure He was not the last Jew to call the Pharisees “hypocrites”. I could make a list of the kings and rabbis who were Pharisees and called their own party by the same epitaph. I have called some of my Christian brothers and sisters more than once “hypocrites”. You could ask me why I call some of my Christian brothers and sisters whom I love very much “hypocrites”? The reason is very simple, because I love my Christian brothers and sisters so much that I have high expectations for them, and I see them falling into the standard religious hypocrisies and being dragged by the trends and fashions of the Evangelical culture into living a fake spiritual life and pretending on Sundays that Monday will be different from every other Monday on their job. Yeshua was a Pharisee and Paul states clearly that He is a Pharisee. The big question that this text of Yeshua’s teaching in Matthew 23 is – what are we, in the 21st Century, supposed to do with the teaching of Yeshua in Matthew 23? Are we to ignore it like most of the Christian world, Evangelicals, Pentecostals, Churches of Christ, Baptists, Methodists? I would say almost all my Christian brothers might read the words of Yeshua marked in red and come out condemning the Pharisees (the Jews) for being hypocrites, when they do the same thing that Yeshua condemned in His own group, the Pharisees! I love you, my dear Christian brothers and sisters, no less than I love my Jewish brothers and sisters, and because I love you, I am neither ashamed nor fearful of writing these words of truth. Shall we ignore the teachings of Yeshua and just worship a Jew hanging on a cross and never take Yeshua off that cross and have Him crowned as King of the Jews and King of our lives? Shall we ignore the red-letter edition of the Bible and say that these were just words spoken by the Son of God in the streets of Jerusalem, and on the hills of the Galilee and the shores of the Sea of Galilee, and just write them off? We could just say this is “old stuff”, we live in a modern world now, with an iPhone made in China, a laptop computer made in China or Taiwan, and wear a face mask also made in China, to protect us from a coronavirus plague also made in the same place. We don’t need a Jew that lived 2000 year ago in a faraway land which we don't know whether to call, Israel or Palestine! I realize that I am writing “hard stuff”, but this “hard stuff” is written from a deep love and commitment to that Jew who hung on the Roman cross for six hours, was buried on the hills of Jerusalem, in a land soaked with blood, and got out of the rock-hewn grave after around 72 hours, to walk again through the land of Israel and fix an Ashkenazi fish breakfast for his fisherman disciples on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. You see I am writing to you because I love you and because I believe in your personal integrity with the Lord, and because I don’t blame you for anything, but I do blame the leadership of most of the churches in the West for not teaching the full counsel of the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation. I do blame the leadership that is more interested in creating big churches with no little personal gain and do what the Sadducees did in the time of Yeshua (Jesus). By far there is a high percentage of exceptions to my generalizations, and I know many leaders, pastors, and elders, who are a clear and shining exception to the general rule and are not hypocritical at all and are living a life of pure dedication to the Lord and His church and love Israel and love and support Netivyah. I bless all of the leaders and pastors and elders not to be offended by my words, but to be self-examining and take the time and the effort to be like King David, make mistakes, and allow the Lord to help you fix them and restore the purity of your ministry and intent. It is never too late for any of us, and all of us without exception need to read that chapter 23 of the Gospel of Matthew every few months or at least one time every year and ask ourselves where we stand in relation to preaching to others and not doing what we say. God bless you all my brothers and sisters! I love you all and if I have offended any of you with this prayer list – please do yourself and me a favor, pray for me, and for Jerusalem and for Israel and for your own country and ask the Lord for the zeal and strength to straighten up and fly right. With this worldwide plague I pray every day, Lord come quickly!
My eye surgery, a cornea transplant, is progressing, but next Monday the Lord willing there is an additional minor surgery to go through on the same eye. Please keep praying for me. I ask you to please pray for me and especially for my wife Marcia. Israel is again under attack, this time by the delta corona virus. Both Marcia and I received the third shot of the Pfizer vaccine.
Please keep praying for Rebekka Becker’s mother and brother. Pray for a dear sister in Brazil, Artuza de Oliveira. Pray for a very dear family who now lives in Canada, Merv and Merla Watson. They are older and need a good portion of God’s grace for their lives now.
Keep the Israeli government in your prayers. This new government has so many challenges to face and deal with, and the coalition that they have put together was put together by thumpity and dumpty. Every day that this coalition government exists is a miracle, but as David Ben-Gurion our first prime minister said many years ago, “In Israel if you don’t believe in miracles, you are not a realist.” We do believe in prayer and in the Lord’s intervention for us through 3500 years of history. Every day is a miracle here!
Pray and support Netivyah during these very hard times, for opportunities to do good and to bless and feed and support the population of Israel, those in need whose number has increased by many percentage points during these difficult days in Israel.
The needs of Netivyah for more staff to be able to keep up with the amount of work and the challenges that take both time and money, and to keep up with the needs and the opportunities that God is putting in front of Netivyah.
With the coronavirus raging wild throughout the world, and in Israel, and with the threat of a new closure, Israel needs much prayer, and Netivyah needs your prayers and your support. We are doing our best not to cut the scholarship funds to Jewish and Arab disciples of Yeshua for study in the universities. We believe that building up the standard of our next generation of disciples is a priority.
We will have to cut more than 50 percent of the support for students for this next year’s academic year if the Lord does not use some of our brothers and sisters to help with this project. Netivyah has never gone into financial debt in 40 years of ministry, and we have no plan to go into debt for any project and not even this important investment in the future of the believers in Israel.
For a season we had a special fund to support Arab Christian medical students, and we have supported dozens of Arab Christians from the Galilee with their medical school studies. It is a great program that Netivyah started many years ago and the fruit of these scholarships has produced lawyers and doctors and pharmacists, nurses… Please pray for God’s blessing on Netivyah and on this project specifically!
We have many dear brothers and sisters in both India and Brazil who are still very much in serious trouble with the coronavirus situation and need our prayers. We need to continue to pray for India and Brazil and especially for our dear brothers and sisters in these two countries.
I received a special prayer request from our dear brother Isaac in Chennai, India. Brother Isaac asked us to pray especially for sister Sheela Stephen. Sister Sheela’s lungs are in serious need of oxygen and right now oxygen is hard to find for coronavirus patients.
Keep praying for the Rosenfeld family, the young and the old.
Please pray for a dear brother, Malcolm Thomas King from the UK.
We have dear brothers in Ireland who are older and have the coronavirus, please pray for Wilson and for William.

The Hamotzi food program is restarting with mostly new candidates provided by the city of Jerusalem. Our goal is to simply bless the needy of Jerusalem and make sure that those families with many children and old people, and single mothers, and others, both Jews and a few Arab families, have something fresh and good and healthy to eat. We need your prayers and your help to make this important purely humanitarian service possible. We are following the instruction of Paul in Romans 15:24-27.

We continue to pray for Zhou Wenrian, Abe family, Toru San, Takeo Sensei, Daisuke Sensei, Tomoko San, Yumi and her father Pastor Ohara, George, and Pastor Isaac in Chennai, India.
Please pray for the Rantavaara family and especially for Pekka our dear brother and for his whole family. Pekka is in advanced stages of Parkinson and needs the Lord’s healing and strength.
I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias.
Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Ahuva. Please pray for a dear brother who is well into his 90’s and lost his wife a couple of weeks ago. His name is Dov H. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.
Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.
I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.
From our congregation in Jerusalem, we ask you to join us in prayer for the following dear brothers and sisters: Gary, Melanie, Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby.

Please pray for our two grandchildren. They are both graduating in a few weeks from high school. They are both facing this important change in their lives. Noam our granddaughter also had her 18th birthday on May 1st. This was a very big day for Noam. She is free from high school and also from other obligations and is privileged to make her own decisions and choices in life. Pray for Noam on this major crossroad of life for her and ask the Lord to bless Noam and to give her clear direction and guidance for what is good and right and holy in her life.
Both Noam and Joseph, our two grandchildren, are extremely talented and good students. Both are “A” students and excellent young people, but both need divine protection and guidance to make good and smart and right choices for life.
When I was 18 years old and cut off from my family because of my faith in the Messiah, I had no one on my side and no one to guide me. The Lord’s providential leading and guidance was the only guide that I had. I praise the Lord for His goodness and direction in my life.
I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
