by Barry Shulam The reading of the Torah on Shabbat, Tzav ("Command") Torah: Leviticus 6:1-8:36 Haftarah: Malachi 3:4-24 New Testament: Hebrews 9:11–28; 1 Corinthians 6:9–20 Parashat Tzav meets us this week in a very raw moment. As we think about Israel living through war, uncertainty, and loss, it is hard not to feel like life itself has been torn apart. In that kind of atmosphere, it is very natural to ask: What does faithfulness look like? What does it mean to keep walking with God when everything is shaking? Tzav speaks directly to that question, because it shows us that even in times of national crisis, the daily service to God was not meant to stop. The Mishkan represents a heartbeat at the center of the nation, and that heartbeat needed to keep beating. We note that this altar and fire are tended 24 hours a day, overnight, when most people are asleep, someone is tending the altar and fire. Parashat Tzav (Leviticus 6:1–8:36) continues the laws of the sacrifices, but now from the perspective of the priests. It reviews the burnt offering, grain offering, sin offering, guilt offering, and peace offerings, explaining what parts are burned, what parts may be eaten, and how the priests are to handle them. It then describes the seven‑day ordination of Aaron and his sons: they are washed, dressed in special garments, anointed with oil, and touched with blood on the ear, thumb, and big toe, setting them apart for holy service. On the surface, this can feel very distant—ancient rituals, detailed procedures—but the Torah is opening up the inner life of Israel's worship, showing what it takes, day after day, to keep a people in living relationship with God. One of the central themes of Parasha Tzav is the fire on the altar. The text repeats the instruction: the burnt offering remains on the altar all night, and "a perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar; it shall not go out." This means that even when no one is bringing a new sacrifice, the altar is never allowed to grow cold. The priests tend the embers through the night, adding wood, clearing ashes, making sure that when morning comes, there is a living flame ready to receive the next offering. In the physical world of the Mishkan, that was just part of the routine; spiritually, it becomes a powerful picture of continuity, commitment, and inner devotion that does not shut down when things get dark. Now think about that in light of war and disruption. In ancient Israel, battles, invasions, and crises certainly came, but the ideal of the Torah is that the tamid—the regular daily offering—continues regardless. The nation might face fear at the borders, but at the center, in the sanctuary, the fire for God is still burning. That does not minimize the pain or danger; rather, it insists that the headlines must not entirely swallow covenant life with God. In our own time, when we watch rockets, hostages, soldiers, and civilians suffering, it can feel wrong to talk about "daily spiritual routines." Tzav gently pushes us to see that those routines are precisely what sustain us and keep us from collapsing inward. Another key idea in Tzav is the nature of a korban. The very word "korban" comes from a root that means "to draw near." A sacrifice is not just something destroyed; it is a means of approach, a way to come close to God. But there is an important assumption behind all these korbanot: they are brought from something living. The animal is alive when it is set apart, examined, and led to the altar. You cannot simply find an animal that died of natural causes and say, "Perfect, I'll use this; it costs me nothing." That is not a real offering; it is a disposal dressed up as worship. A true korban involves giving up something vital and valuable, something that you could have used for yourself. This is where the New Testament phrase "living sacrifice" gains its full weight. Paul writes in Romans that believers are to "present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God—this is your spiritual worship." When we hear that in English, it sounds abstract or poetic, but if you set it against Parashat Tzav, it becomes very concrete. A living sacrifice means you bring God your life. At the same time, you are still very much alive—your energy, your desires, your future, your time, your relationship. It means climbing onto the altar. At the same time, you can still choose otherwise, not waiting until circumstances or age have already taken everything from you. Just as Israel could not offer a carcass they found in the field, we are not invited to offer God the "leftovers" of a worn‑out life, or a faith that only turns to Him when there is nothing else left. The idea of "living sacrifice" also speaks to times of conflict and fear. In a war situation, people's instinct is to pull back, to protect themselves, to live in survival mode. That is understandable, and sometimes necessary. But the New Testament, building on the Torah's imagery, calls disciples of Yeshua to remain open to God and to others even under pressure. Hebrews contrasts the repeated sacrifices of the Levitical priests with the once‑for‑all sacrifice of the Messiah, who offers Himself willingly and opens a "new and living way" into God's presence. Because His offering is complete and effective, our offerings—our daily obedience, our acts of love and mercy—do not earn us access; they are responses of gratitude and trust. Even when war rages, that response can continue: we can still pray, still forgive, still give, still listen, still carry one another's burdens. Those are expressions of being a living sacrifice. The Haftarah for Tzav, from Jeremiah 7:21–8:3 and 9:22–23, sharpens this point from another angle. In Jeremiah's day, the Temple was functioning, sacrifices were being brought, but the people's hearts were far from God. God says through the prophet that when He brought Israel out of Egypt, His main command was not about offerings but about listening to His voice and walking in His ways. Sacrifices, without obedience and justice, become empty and even offensive. Jeremiah warns that relying on the Temple and its rituals while ignoring God's moral demands will lead to disaster. Yet in the midst of this, God says, "Let not the wise boast in their wisdom, nor the strong in their strength, nor the rich in their riches, but let the one who boasts boast in this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who practices kindness, justice, and righteousness.” That message lands very close to home today. In a time of war, it is easy to boast in strength, in technology, in strategy, or on the other side in cleverness and manipulation. Jeremiah reminds us that what really matters is knowing God—the One who cares about chesed (kindness), mishpat (justice), and tzedakah (righteousness). Parashat Tzav shows us the mechanics of worship; Jeremiah demands the heart of worship. Together they say: keep the altar fire burning, but make sure the flame in your heart matches the flame on the altar. When we bring this into the New Testament, Yeshua stands at the center. He is presented as both the ultimate korban and the great high priest. His sacrifice is "living" in the deepest sense: He lays down His life willingly, and then rises, conquering death, so that His priestly ministry continues forever. On that basis, the New Testament calls us not to bring animal sacrifices but to become sacrificial people—those whose lives are offered to God in trust and love. Our prayers, our generosity, our acts of compassion, our perseverance in holiness, especially in times of pressure, become like that continual fire on the altar. So as we stand in this difficult time for Israel and for the Jewish people worldwide, Parashat Tzav offers both a challenge and a comfort. The challenge is not to let crisis cause our inner fire to go out—not to abandon prayer, Torah, community, or love of neighbor because everything feels unstable. The comfort is that God has always walked with His people through nights of danger, and He has given us a pattern: keep the fire burning, bring living offerings, listen to His voice, and trust that He is present in the Mishkan of our lives even when the world outside is at war. In Messiah, that pattern becomes a living reality, and we are invited to respond by saying, in effect, Here I am—alive, imperfect, but willing—take my life as a living sacrifice, and let Your fire keep burning in me. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
