======================================================= The Jerusalem Prayer List – 8 November, 2025
by Joseph Shulam For more than 40 years, I have been reading the same books with the same Torah Portions and the same readings from the prophets. I then write some commentary on the same texts from the Bible. Most of the time, I see different things that touch my soul and excite me and motivate me to write something different that pops into my mind and soul. Year after year, read over and over again the same chapters and the same stories, my soul notices new things and wants to drink the new wine of the Holy Spirit. The Torah reading this Shabbat is called Vayera in Hebrew. The English translation of the Hebrew word Vayera is, appeared. Here is the whole verse from Genesis 18:1: "Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day." When I read this verse, early this morning, what came to my mind is a song of Louis Armstrong, the poor young boy who roamed the streets of New Orleans, LA, hungry, and was adopted by an immigrant orthodox Jewish family, and for one of his birthdays, purchased a used trumpet for him. The rest of Louis Armstrong's story is written in history. Louis Armstrong has a song, "The Rocking Chair". "Old rockin' chair's got me, my cane by my side. Fetch me that gin, son, 'fore I tan your hide. Can't get from this cabin, goin' nowhere. Just set me here grabbin' at the flies round this rockin' chair My dear old aunt Harriet, in Heaven she be Send me sweet chariot, for the end of the trouble I see Old rockin' chair gets it, judgment day is here Chained to my rockin' chair Old rockin' chair's got me…” In the Torah Portion, old Abraham, well into his 90 years of age, sat just outside the city of Hebron under the oak tree of Mamre, late afternoon, rocking in his rocking chair. And three strangers come into his space, and this is what old Abe says to them: “So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground, and said, "My Lord, if I have now found favor in Your sight, do not pass on by Your servant. Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. And I will bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh your hearts. After that, you may pass by, inasmuch as you have come to your servant." They said, "Do as you have said." This act of hospitality of Abraham, our father, is the best example of hospitality in the Bible and in both Jewish and Christian History. The significance of this biblical story is so vital for all of us, and I would even stretch it to the best example of being a human being in history. If Christians had acted this way during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition and considered their Jewish neighbors, the way that Abraham was considerate of these three strangers that walked into his encampment, our world, and especially the Middle East, would have long ago been like the Garden of Eden. However, the most important and exciting aspect of this story is not what Abraham did; it is what God did, accompanied by two other characters that joined him in this journey to Hebron, the city of the patriarchs, establishing here a truth that both the theologians of the Jews and the Christians have done everything possible to ignore—the plain and direct meaning of this text. You see further in the story an interesting development. As an aside, in chapter 14 of Genesis, we read that Abraham had 318 adult men between the ages of 20 and 50, who were men trained in war and defense. We also read the story of Abraham sending this small Army to chase after the five kings that came from the north and took Lot and his family captive, together with much booty, and ran back to the north. This explains why Abraham never settled in Hebron, Shechem, or any of the other cities in the land of Canaan. His camp was way too big to find a Hilton or Ramada hotel inside the cities. Abraham pitched his tents just on the outskirts of the big towns of the land of Canaan. If I apply common logic, 318 adult men between the ages of 20 and 50 would have a wife and at least one child. This would make the camp of Abraham at the Oaks of Mamre have a count of more than 1000 people. Abraham does not go to his servants to tell them what to do for the three guests who are still nameless. He goes to Sarah, his wife, and asks her to orchestrate the early dinner (early, relatively, because choosing a young calf and preparing it for cooking would take a considerable amount of time). Probably, if the guests arrived between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., dinner would have been served for these anonymous guests around 7 or 8 in the evening. For the first time in reading this story over and over many years, for at least once each year for 40 years, I paid attention to the following verse that actually gave me a little shock: "And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate." These verses bring to me another memory. About 20 years back, I took David and Martha Stern to Germany with me and Marcia to teach in a seminar in Langensteinbach, a small German village on the edge of the Black Forest in Germany. We went to eat in a typical old-style German Restaurant. The waiter stood about 6 feet away from the table even after he served us the meal. He didn't move; he just saw every move or signal that we would make and quickly came to the table and asked how he could serve us! When I read in the Bible the following text in relation to this very special (non-kosher) meal, because Abraham served his divine guest beef and butter, I was reminded of our visit in Germany with the Stern family. The after-dinner encounter is the climax to the rest of the story. In the middle of the dinner, one of the three angels turns to Abraham and asks him, "Where is Sarah, your wife?" This guest, who asked, already knew that the name of Abraham's wife is Sarah. Second, according to Middle Eastern ancient customs, a strange man, even a new guest, does not address the wife of the master of the house without being acknowledged by the master of the house. Third, after they all eat the beef with butter, and I imagine they enjoyed the food and the conversation, one of the three guests turns to Abraham and drops a bomb: "Then they said to him, "Where is Sarah, your wife?" So, he said, "Here, in the tent." And He said, "I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son." (Sarah was listening in the tent door, which was behind him.)" Anyone with a bit of intelligence knows that a 100-year-old man and a 90-year-old woman can't get pregnant naturally at those old ages. This is why, when Sarah heard the conversation, she laughed. The real drama starts here, Genesis chapter 18:16 forward. The Biblical text in a very rare form reveals to all of us what was going on in the mind of one of these three angels: "Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. And the Lord said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing, since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him." And the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know." Genesis 18:16-21 is a revelation. The text reveals what was going on in God's head! I cried a few minutes ago when it dawned on me the way God is thinking about his children, even the evil children down here on earth. The consideration for the righteous and HIS desire to share, reveal, explain, and include his human earthlings (like me and you) is just absolutely totally different from the way we imagine God, in a way that surpasses what religious leaders teach about how God relates to us, his morally weak humans. In the last few verses of chapter 18, Sarah, who was just blessed with a promise to have a son, says something that is not true. "And the Lord said to Abraham, 'Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son." But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. And He said, "No, but you did laugh!" The rest of our reading on this portion records one of these monumental discussions in the Bible between God and His sons and daughters. I feel so much joy when I hear these discussions with Abraham and with Moses, and with Elijah, much later. The Creator, the Father of all that we are and have, and the very controller of the spinning of the earth around the sun, is discussing and even arguing with weak and sinful human beings, just like you and me! God not only is arguing with Abraham but is actually like an Arab in the Old City of Jerusalem haggling over the price of an Arab "Kafia" headdress that costs 10 dollars. There is nothing equal in any other religion of the world, like the faith of Abraham and His seed that is still living and keeping this relationship alive. Some of our Christian brothers and sisters, unfortunately, have had founders and theologians who have poisoned their wells and have created systematic theologies that keep promoting division and exclusion rather than unity and harmony and tolerance to restore the unity of the body of Christ before He returns and makes this Earth look even worse than Sodom and Gomorrah did in the days of Abraham. This teaching in this prayer letter is getting longer than it ought to be. Please read the texts peacefully in your home and meditate and pray for revelation and seek the Lord of Heaven and Earth and pray for my health and the health of all those whom you know need God's healing touch and strength to continue walking in God's paths of righteousness. Please also read the portion from II Kings 4:1-37, it is a fascinating story with great importance for all of us these days. Also, don't forget to read the section from the New Testament from Luke 17 – don't be satisfied with reading a few verses. Just read the whole chapter. Reading the Bible ought to be like eating your food. Eat every day until you're not hungry any longer and stop until tomorrow's mealtime. Blessings to you and yours from Joseph Shulam P.S. End Note: These two angels are the only two angels that have names, except Satan: Michael (מִיכָאֵל— "Who is like God?") His name is a rhetorical question meaning "Who is like God?", expressing humility before God's unmatched power. He is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible: 1. Daniel 10:13 – "But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days; and, behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me…" Michael is described as a chief prince and protector of Israel. 2. Daniel 10:21 – "But I will tell you what is noted in the Scripture of truth: yet there is none that holds with me in these things, but Michael your prince." 3. Daniel 12:1 – "And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince who stands for the children of your people…" 4. Role: Michael is presented as the guardian and defender of Israel, the spiritual warrior who stands against the enemies of God's people. Gabriel גַּבְרִיאֵל). "God is my strength"). Meaning: From gever (strong man/hero) + El (God) -meaning "God is my strength." 1. Mentions in the Hebrew Bible: Daniel 8:16 – "And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, 'Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.'" Gabriel explains Daniel's vision of the ram and the goat. 2. Daniel 9:21–22 – "While I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me… and informed me, and talked with me…" 3. Role: Gabriel serves as a messenger and interpreter, explaining divine visions to Daniel. His role later continues in the New Testament, announcing the births of John the Baptist and Yeshua (Jesus). just a reminder we have support for those on food stamps in the USA. Shirley J heart surgery is needed since her stents did not work. She is asking for faith to be strengthened.

Irina L. is in need of a kidney transplant. her kidney is beginning to fail and is only 26% functioning. Prayer for a suitable donor and wisdom for the doctors and medical team to maintain her kidney functions. (Irina is the twin sister of pastor Serge from Kazakhstan.
Elisheva’s husband is recovering from a fourth surgery. on September 23 he will have a 5th surgery. Also prayer for healing for Elisheva's left leg and hip joint healing. Also a interview next week for a new job.
Manny is asking for prayers for his fathers health that is in decline.
Jenny is going to have some medical evaluations. asking for prayers for the best outcome that will not impact her current life plans and her ability to drive a car.
I spoke with Shirleyann. Her skin cancer was treated and she has to put a cancer treatment cream on her spots daily. her follow up visit is Dec 4th.
Jordan Issac - prayer for his treatments to work. Prayer for a mentor to step in and support him in his search for the Lord.
Pete and Marge. Marge is undergoing test for Brest cancer and they are in the process of trying to get legal guardianship of their grandkids. They are both in the mid 80s. Please pray for strength and longevity to get these kids past college age.
Aida Ramirez is back in her apartment from rehab. praise the Lord. please pray for her continued recovery and dementia complications.
Aida Gonzalez needs prayers as the is the main caretaker of her mother Aida. Continue to pray for strength and congregations support.
Pat S pain management has improved with some shots. Keep Philip who is 89 and is caring for Pat in you prayers.
Larry is asking for prayers for his grandchildren. I would say most of us that have grandchildren are concerned about the states of the world. The state of intolerance. The temptations out there. Please pray for the holy sprit to guide them in making good choices.
Juli got a good report on her last scan and she is also in remission. So praise God. Give thanks to the Lord for he is Good.
update Bills received news in his last cancer scan that a new form of cancer has been found. Please keep him and Jill in your prayers as they begin a new round of treatments. Please pray that the new treatment works well and the side effects are minimal.
Barbra and Angie in Alaska. Barbra has some pains and discomfort related to old age. Please lift them in prayer for strength and reduction in pain.
Please pray for Danah, my daughter's health issues. I pray for the Lord to give Danah wisdom, peace, and calm in life and her work.
Aaron Hook, Nancy Hook’s oldest son, needs our prayers for wisdom and healing from past life issues.
Pray for these important men of God: Rabbi Salt, his family, and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

Pray for Steve Mock - His cognitive condition has declined, and we ask for the grace of God and His Healing and strength. Steve and Josie’s son Joseph has received a wonderful and glorious report. After the last bone marrow transplant, the report is that the doctors didn’t find any leukemia in his body! Praise the Lord!
