"I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." (Genesis 12:2–3) This was not simply a promise given to Abraham as an individual. It was an everlasting covenant with Abraham and his descendants. Throughout the Scriptures we see that God remains faithful to this covenant. The way people and nations respond to Israel has spiritual significance because God is faithful to His Word. What does it mean to bless Israel? Blessing Israel is much more than speaking kind words. In Scripture, blessing is demonstrated through action. The Queen of Sheba came to Jerusalem because she had heard of Solomon's wisdom. After seeing his kingdom, she declared: "Blessed be the LORD your God, who delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel! Because of the LORD's eternal love for Israel, He has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness." (1 Kings 10:9) She recognized that Solomon's wisdom and kingdom came from the God of Israel. At the end of her visit we read: "King Solomon gave the Queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her servants to her own country." (1 Kings 10:13) She came to bless, and she left blessed. Another example is King Cyrus of Persia. He did more than express goodwill toward Israel. He took action. "This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: 'The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah. Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel.'" (Ezra 1:2–3) To bless Israel is to support God's purposes for His people. King David also gives us another way to bless Israel. "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: 'May those who love you prosper. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.' For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, 'Peace be within you.' For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your good." (Psalm 122:6–9) Those who love Jerusalem are called to pray for her peace. History also provides illustrations of this biblical principle. During the nineteenth century Britain was the greatest empire in the world. In 1838 it became the first nation to establish a permanent consulate in Jerusalem during the Ottoman period. This opened the door for Protestant churches, schools, and hospitals to be established in the Holy Land. Then, in 1917, came the Balfour Declaration, an important step toward the restoration of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland. Later, British policy changed. In 1939 the White Paper severely restricted Jewish immigration to the Land of Israel during one of the darkest periods in Jewish history. In 1948 the British Empire began to crumble. I see this as an illustration of God's promise: "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse." In recent years Uganda has maintained warm relations with Israel. It has continued to honor the memory of Yonatan (Yoni) Netanyahu, the commander of the Entebbe rescue operation, and has strengthened its friendship with the State of Israel. More recently, reports have spoken of enormous potential gold deposits in Uganda, with some estimates valuing them at around twelve trillion dollars or more. When I see a nation honoring Israel and then hear of such a remarkable blessing, I am reminded of God's promise: "I will bless those who bless you." The New Testament confirms that God has not abandoned His covenant with Israel. Paul writes: "For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable." (Romans 11:29) He also says: "For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual blessings, they owe it to the Jews to share with them their material blessings." (Romans 15:27) If the nations have received spiritual blessings through Israel, then they are also called to bless Israel in practical ways. The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that God's covenant with Israel remains secure. "This is what the LORD says, He who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar—the LORD Almighty is His name: 'Only if these decrees vanish from My sight,' declares the LORD, 'will Israel ever cease being a nation before Me forever.'" (Jeremiah 31:35–36) God has not changed. He is still faithful to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. When we bless Israel, pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and stand with God's purposes for His people, we are standing with the Word of God itself. "I will bless those who bless you." This is God's promise, and He is faithful to fulfill His Word. |
