오늘은 홀로코스트 기념일입니다! 제 생애 첫 기억 중 하나는 크고 분명하게 울리던 묵념 사이렌 소리입니다. 저는 놀라고 무서워 어머니에게 달려가 안기기 원했습니다. 어머니는 저를 무릎에 앉혀 얼러주셨습니다. 저는 아마 두세 살이었을 것입니다.

지금 저는 75세이고 매년 이 기념일마다 저는 제가 홀로코스트 2세대라는 것을 인지합니다. 저의 어린 시절 내내 저는 제 가족에게서 2차 세계대전 때 모든 위기의 중심이었던, 저희 어머니와 이모와 외할머니가 불가리아 노동수용소에서 겪어야했던 유배 이야기를 들었습니다.

저희 어머니와 이모는 샌드위치를 만들고 물을 가지고 불가리아 소피아 역까지 걸어가서 가축 칸에 실린 그리스 유대인들에게 음식과 물을 주었던 이야기였습니다. 그리스 유대인들을 독일과 핀란드 죽음의 수용소로 태워가는 그 기차들은 소피아를 지나가는데 연료를 더 싣기 위해 그곳에 몇 분 동안 멈췄습니다.

여러분이 이런 이야기를 들으며 자라면 여러분 여생 동안 여러분을 따라 다니는 두 가지 반응이 있습니다. 첫째는 원수, 이 경우 독일 나치에 대한 부정적이고 건강하지 않은 두려움입니다. 두 번째 반응은 180도 정반대입니다.

저는 어린 시절부터 내 인생을 사람들을 더 낫게 만드는 데에 바치고 싶다고 생각했습니다. 불가리아 공산당 창당 멤버 중 한 명이었던 저희 어머니는 인류가 평등 및 사회경제적 진보 원리와 노동자 권리를 통해 더 나아질 수 있다고 믿으셨습니다. 정치 스펙트럼에서 저희 어머니와는 정반대편에 있으셨던 저희 아버지는 인류는 결코 더 나아지지 않으며, 단 한 가지 사는 법은 언제나 스스로를 방어하여 무슨 수를 쓰든 원수를 이기는 것이라고 믿으셨습니다.

저희 아버지는 착한 사람이었지만, 도덕관념이 없으셨습니다. 그는 도덕성이란 단지 먹이사슬 꼭대기에 있는 자들이 약하고 가난한 이들을 착취하는 자기들의 행위를 감추기 위해 논하는 사치스러운 것일 뿐이라고 믿으셨습니다. 이렇게 양극단의 정치사회적 환경에서 자랐기 때문에 저는 언제나 사람을 변화시키고 영향을 주는 것에 관심이 생기게 되었습니다.

우리가 세균에 감염된 환경 가운데 있으면서, 저는 사람으로서 우리 자신이 2차 세계대전 때 우리 가족과 유대인뿐만 아니라 수백만 명이 겪었던 악한 일을 행하지 않도록 백신을 맞아 면역을 갖게 되는 것에 관심이 있었습니다. 제가 나이 16살에 복음서와 사도행전을 읽다가 예슈아를 발견했을 때, 기독교가 아닌, 신약의 예슈아, 유대인의 메시아, 아우슈비츠나 버겐벨젠보다 더 나은 곳일 수 있는 세상을 가르치시는 분을 발견했을 때, 저는 더 나은 종류의 인류가 가능할 수 있는 유일하고 참된 가능성은 더 악한 것으로 악과 싸우는 것이 아니라, 선으로 악과 싸우는 것임을 깨달았습니다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 59년 동안 세계적 사역을 해오고, 나이 75살이 된 지금, 저는 복음조차 즉각적 해결책이 아니라는 것을 이해합니다. 저는 지금 하나님의 아들 예슈아를 나의 랍비, 선생님, 구주, 메시아로 두고도 해결책은 즉각적이지 않다는 것을 이해합니다.

저는 이 메시아 예슈아를 따르는 데에, 그리고 유대인과 이방인 모두를 향한 그분의 가르침과 모범을 실행하는 데에 헌신된 남자와 여자의 군대를 일으키기 위해서는 다른 형태의 체계가 필요하리라는 것을 이해합니다.

지난 1,500년 동안 작동해온 기독교 체계는 세상 어느 곳에서도 사랑하고 평화로운 공동체를 낳지 못했습니다. 이 경우에 일반화가 정당한 것은 제가 보아온 일반적인 역사와 예들이 성경에 제시된 예슈아와 그분의 제자들의 인격이나 가르침이나 요구사항들에 들어맞지도 반영하지도 않기 때문입니다.

이 때문에 저는 이스라엘과 전 세계에 계신 형제자매님들께 기독교 교파들의 일용할 양식인 분열과 적의를 잊어버리시기를 간곡히 권하고 격려하는 것입니다. 저는 예슈아의 제자들에게 신약을 배우고 연구하고, 오늘날에 예슈아와 그분의 제자들은 어떤 사람인지 알도록 노력하며, 다시금 예슈아를 단지 우리의 구주, 하나님의 아들, 그저 평범한 예배의 대상으로 뿐만 아니라, 우리 삶의 교사, 우리의 코치로 삼기를 간곡히 권합니다. 그분은 최종적으로 우리의 재판관이 되실 분이십니다.

그분께서는 그분의 손에 검을 들고 모든 육체를 심판하실 아주 거친 재판관이 되실 것입니다. 하나님의 은혜도 개인적 이득을 얻기 위해 하나님의 나라를 나누고 정치화하고 사용하여 적의와 미움과 인종차별을 가르친 자들을 도와주지 않을 것입니다! 하나님의 은혜의 때는 지금입니다!

우리는 지금 하나님의 은혜를 사용하여 우리 삶을 바로 잡고 고치며, 다른 사람들을 좋은 에어컨이 설치된 교회 건물에 가도록 인도하는 것뿐만 아니라, 복음과 구원의 메시지와 하나님의 사랑을 지금 여기 우리 이웃과 우리 주변에 있는 사람들에게 전파하도록 인도해야 합니다!

이번 주 토라 포션은 레위기 9:1~11:47로, 이름은 “쉐미니”입니다. 선지자의 글에서 읽는 말씀은 사무엘하 6:1~7:17입니다. 신약성경에서는 마태복음 3:11-17을 읽습니다. 이번 주에 저는 세례 요한의 말을 들어 나누고 싶은데요, 그것은 메시아는 어떤 분이신지, 여기 이 땅에서 메시아의 생애 동안 그의 사명은 어떠할지에 대한 세례 요한의 시각을 기술하고 있습니다.

“나는 너희로 회개하게 하기 위하여 물로 세례를 베풀거니와 내 뒤에 오시는 이는 나보다 능력이 많으시니 나는 그의 신을 들기도 감당하지 못하겠노라 그는 성령과 불로 너희에게 세례를 베푸실 것이요 손에 키를 들고 자기의 타작 마당을 정하게 하사 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우시리라 이 때에 예수께서 갈릴리로부터 요단 강에 이르러 요한에게 세례를 받으려 하시니.” – 마태복음 3:11–13

여기에서 명확히 할 필요가 있는 첫 문구는 헤브라이즘, 히브리 숙어 “불로 세례를 받다!”입니다. 이 숙어의 기본적인 뜻은 ‘원수와의 첫 대면, 대결’입니다. 세례 요한은 여기에서 메시아에 대해 말하고 있는데요, 그분께서 우리에게 성령님께로 첫 소개를 해주시고, 원수와의 전쟁, 대결에로 첫 소개를 해실 것이라는 것입니다.

그 나머지 요한의 말도 우리의 깨달음에 아주 중요합니다:

“손에 키를 들고 자기의 타작 마당을 정하게 하사 알곡은 모아 곳간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우시리라.” – 마태복음 3:12

“손에 키를 들었다”는 말이 무슨 뜻일까요? 키질이 무엇입니까? 키질은 넓은 갈퀴가 네 개 있는, 나무로 만든 너른 키를 가지고 곡식을 공중으로 던져 바람으로 알곡과 쭉정이를 가르는 과정입니다. 키질하는 과정은 추수한 곡식을 타작마당, 노출된 높은 언덕이나 산 꼭대기의 평평한 바위 바닥에 놓는 것입니다.

농부가 키를 사용할 때 그는 타작마당에서 으깨진 곡식을 들어 그것을 바람에 날려 던집니다. 좋은 알곡은 무겁기 때문에 땅으로 떨어지고 쭉정이는 바람에 날아갑니다. 타작과 키질은 힘든 일이지만 그 밀이 가장 고통을 겪는 부분입니다. 그것은 쭉정이와 알곡을 분리해 내는 고통스러운 과정입니다.

이것이 세례 요한이 메시아의 사명에 대해 기술하고 있는 것입니다! 예슈아께서도 당연히 요한의 첫 소개에 찬동하십니다.

“세상 끝에도 이러하리라 천사들이 와서 의인 중에서 악인을 갈라 내어…” – 마태복음 13:49

세례 요한은 메시아를 보며, 예슈아를 세상 죄를 지고 가시기 위해 오신 하나님의 어린양으로도 봅니다. 하나님의 어린양의 형상은 유월절 사건에서 취한 것입니다:

“너희는 이스라엘 온 회중에게 말하여 이르라 이 달 열흘에 너희 각자가 어린 양을 취할찌니 각 가족대로 그 식구를 위하여 어린 양을 취하되 그 어린 양에 대하여 식구가 너무 적으면 그 집의 이웃과 함께 사람 수를 따라서 하나를 취하며 각 사람이 먹을 수 있는 분량에 따라서 너희 어린 양을 계산할 것이며 너희 어린 양은 흠 없고 일 년 된 수컷으로 하되 양이나 염소 중에서 취하고 이 달 열나흗날까지 간직하였다가 해 질 때에 이스라엘 회중이 그 양을 잡고.” – 출애굽기 12:3-6

여러분은 이 본문 안에 문법적, 논리적 불일치가 있는 것을 알아채실 것입니다. 각 가족대로 니산월 14일 저녁에 그들의 문 계단에서 그들만의 양이나 염소를 잡아야 했습니다. 그런데 6절에서는 이스라엘 온 회중이 해 질 때 “그것”을 잡을 것이라고 암시하는 것 같습니다.

히브리어 성경의 최고의 주석가 중 하나로 여겨지는 12세기에 독일에 살았던 라쉬는 이것에 대해 평하면서 문법적 문제를 주목했고 이스라엘 온 공동체가 양 하나를 잡는 것은 불가능하다는 사실을 언급했습니다.

그는 거기에서부터 그의 독자들을 이사야 53:7로 데려갑니다:

“그가 곤욕을 당하여 괴로울 때에도 그의 입을 열지 아니하였음이여 마치 도수장으로 끌려 가는 어린 양과 털 깎는 자 앞에서 잠잠한 양 같이 그의 입을 열지 아니하였도다.” – 이사야 53:7

라쉬는 구원하는 어린양의 모티브가 이사야 53장에서도 발견되는 것을 주목하고, 직접적으로 말하지는 않지만, 유월절 전야에 집단적으로 잡는 이 어린양이 이사야 53:7의 메시아적 어린양과 관계가 있음을 암시함으로 이 두 곳을 연결시킵니다.

저는 이것이 세례 요한이 예슈아께서 그에게 세례 받으시러 요단강으로 내려오시는 것을 보며 말한 말의 의미라고 믿습니다:

“… 보라 세상 죄를 지고 가는 하나님의 어린 양이로다.” – 요한복음 1:29

요한의 말의 중요성은 “양과 염소”, 메시아의 고난(이사야 53장)으로 자기의 의를 산 사람들과 자기의 행위와 자선으로 자기가 의롭다고 믿는 사람들을 나누고 가르는 말 중 하나라는 것입니다.

요즈음 저희의 도전은 기본으로 돌아가는 것, 우리 자신의 이득과 심지어 우리 자신의 개인적 구원에는 주의를 더 적게 기울이고, 우리 구주 예슈아에 의해 성취된 온 이스라엘의 사명, 즉 세상에 빛이 되는 것(이사야 42:6과 하나님께서 우리 조상 아브라함에게 하신 약속)에 주의를 더 많이 기울이는 것입니다. 예슈아로부터 비롯된 하나님의 은혜와 우리의 구원과 우리 죄를 사하기 위한 예슈아의 희생을 기억하고 경축하는 것은 멋진 일입니다.

우리는 우리의 유월절 양(고전 5:7,8)이신 예슈아 안에서 경축하고 기뻐해야 하지만, 사람이신 예슈아 그분께서 모든 육체를 심판하시어 어떤 사람들은 정죄하시고 어떤 사람들은 구원하실 것을 잊어서는 안 됩니다.

“알지 못하던 시대에는 하나님이 간과하셨거니와 이제는 어디든지 사람에게 다 명하사 회개하라 하셨으니 이는 정하신 사람으로 하여금 천하를 공의로 심판할 날을 작정하시고 이에 그를 죽은 자 가운데서 다시 살리신 것으로 모든 사람에게 믿을 만한 증거를 주셨음이니라 하니라.” – 사도행전 17:30,31

저는 개인적으로 예슈아께서 모든 육체를 심판하시는 날이 우리에게서 그리 멀지 않으며, “코로나”라고 부르는 이 팬데믹이 그저 온 세계가 하나님의 손에 있음을 상기시키는 것이라고 믿습니다. 그분께서는 그분의 뜻대로 구원하실 수도 있고 그분의 뜻대로 정죄하실 수도 있으십니다.

이것은 제가 여러분이 이 홀로코스트 기념일에 기억하셨으면 좋겠다고 생각하는 것입니다! 하나님을 경외하는 것은 성경에서 아주 중요한 많은 가르침들만큼이나, 아니 훨씬 더 중요합니다. “여호와를 경외함”이란, 하나님을 믿는 믿음과 그분을 의뢰함과 그분에 대한 존경을 가지고 의를 행하도록 동기 부여되고 하나님을 사랑함과 두려워함이라는 이 두 극 사이에서 하나님과의 관계를 유지하는 것을 의미합니다. (여러분의 소원이 그분께 순종하고 그분을 기쁘시게 하는 것일 정도로 그분을 존경하는 것 말입니다!)

그리스도(메시아)의 제자들은 자기 주변에서 일어나고 있는 일들에 관해 수동적이거나 의기소침해서는 안 됩니다. 자기 공동체 안에 일어나는 도전과 악을 마주하여 잠자코 있어서는 안 됩니다. 자기 주변에서 일어나고 있는 모든 수난과 불의와 학대에 대해 안중에 없어서는 안 됩니다.

메시아의 제자들은 이 세상의 어둠 가운데, 우리 주변에서 일어나고 있는 부도덕과 가증한 일들에 빛을 비추어야 합니다. 교회도 회당도 정치적 옳음의 문화를 두려워하여 입에 물을 머금고 잠자코 있어왔는데요, 하나님을 두려워하기보다 사람을 두려워하기로 선택한 것입니다.

정치적 옳음이란 것은 결코 하나님의 말씀이나 하나님의 뜻에 맞춰진 적이 없습니다! 그것은 언제나 넓은 내리막길로 치닫고 있으며, 그 길을 걷는 사람들을 멸망, 지옥으로 데려갑니다! 주를 기쁘시게 하고 성경적으로 옳은 것이 정치적으로 옳은 것보다 더 중요합니다. 저는 예레미야 선지자의 말로 끝맺고자 합니다:

“여호와께서 이와 같이 말씀하시니라 무릇 사람을 믿으며 육신으로 그의 힘을 삼고 마음이 여호와에게서 떠난 그 사람은 저주를 받을 것이라 그는 사막의 떨기나무 같아서 좋은 일이 오는 것을 보지 못하고 광야 간조한 곳, 건건한 땅, 사람이 살지 않는 땅에 살리라 그러나 무릇 여호와를 의지하며 여호와를 의뢰하는 그 사람은 복을 받을 것이라 그는 물 가에 심어진 나무가 그 뿌리를 강변에 뻗치고 더위가 올지라도 두려워하지 아니하며 그 잎이 청청하며 가무는 해에도 걱정이 없고 결실이 그치지 아니함 같으리라.” – 예레미야 17:5-8

단지 이것을 기억하십시오. 1930년대와 1940년대에 유럽에 기독교인들이 더 많았더라면, 나치 홀로코스트는 결코 없었을 것이고, 폴란드 침공도 없었을 것이고, 나치의 죽음의 수용소도, 수백만의 남녀와 어린이와 유대인들과 집시들과 다른 국적자들이 가스실에 보내지고 화장장에서 태워지는 일도 없었을 것입니다.

홀로코스트라고 불리는 이 만행을 실행한 자들은 기독교인들이었습니다. 그저 그들이 유대인이나 집시라는 이유로 사람들을 폄하하고 수십만 명씩 죽인 것은 무슬림도, 불자들도, 유대인도 아니었습니다. 그것은 교회에 가서 “내 주는 강한 성이요 …”를 부르던 개신교 기독교인들, 가톨릭 기독교인들이었습니다.

이 기념일에 저는 제 자신과, 그리고 여러분에게도 우리의 예슈아(그리스도)를 믿는 믿음이 그저 좋은 옷을 입고 좋은 교회 건물에 가서 찬송가를 부르는 것만이 아님을 상기시키는 기회를 갖게 되어 기쁩니다. 우리의 믿음은 우리의 모든 삶과 가족과 일터와 사회와 우리의 시민적 의무에 도덕적, 윤리적, 사업적 제어를 둡니다.

혹시 제가 앞에 쓴 것이 마음에 들지 않으셨다면, 주저 마시고 제게 편지를 써 도전해주시기 바랍니다. 저는 여러분께 친절히 답해 드리겠습니다.

저를 위해서도 기도해 주십시오. 지난 며칠 동안 저는 기력이 없고 춥게 느껴졌고, 제 왼쪽 다리와 등허리에 통증이 있어 고생했습니다. 저는 이것이 그저 늙은 사람이 보통 가지고 있는 통증이라고 생각하고 그러기를 바랍니다. 주님께서는 고치시고 강건케 하시고 힘을 주실 수 있으십니다.

저는 5월 2일에 눈 수술이 예정되어 있습니다. 이 수술은 제 왼쪽 눈에 합니다. 제 왼쪽 눈은 1951년 이래로 실명되었는데, 지금 예루살렘의 최고 의사들이 이 눈에 수술을 하여 제가 양쪽 눈으로 볼 수 있게 되기를 바라고 있습니다. 제게는 이것이 기적이나 다름없는 일입니다. 그래도 저는 여러분의 기도가 필요합니다. 마르시아도 저 다음에 5월 중에 한 쪽 눈에 백내장 수술을 받을 것입니다.

간암 4기 진단을 받으신 80대 아버지를 뵈러 콜롬비아행 비행기를 탄 유다 카메로를 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다. 콜롬비아 의사들이 유다에게 와서 아버지를 뵈라고 권고했습니다. 유다의 아버지와 치유의 기적을 위해 기도해 주시기 바랍니다!

The Jerusalem Prayer List – April 8, 2021

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day! One of my first memories in life is the memorial siren that sounded loud and clear. Surprised and scared, I ran to my mother and wanted to nurse. She took me on her lap and allowed me to nurse. I was probably 2 or 3 years old.

Now, I am 75 years old and every year on this day of remembrance I know that I am a second generation Holocaust survivor. All my childhood from every member of my family I heard the narrative that was a pivotal point of every crisis that was the Second World War, the exile that my mother and sister and grandmother had to experience in the labor camps of Bulgaria.

The stories of my mother and sister making sandwiches and carrying water and walking to the Sofia, Bulgaria train station to give the Greek Jews that were loaded on cattle cars some food and water. The trains that were taking the Greek Jews to the extermination camps in Germany and Poland passed through Sofia and stopped there for a few minutes for refueling.

When you grow up with these narratives there are two reactions that could accompany you for the rest of your life. The first is a negative and unhealthy fear of the enemy, in this case the German Nazis. The second reaction is 180 degrees in the opposite direction.

I felt from those childhood days that I wanted to dedicate my life to making people better. My mother, who was one of the founders of the Communist Party of Bulgaria believed that humanity can become better by the principles of equality and social and economic progress, and the rights of the workers. My father who was on the opposite side of the political spectrum from my mother, believed that humanity will never become better and that the only way to live is be always ready to defend yourself and to win against your enemies by any and all means.

My father was a good man, but also amoral. He believed that morality was a luxury that was only for those who were at the top of the food chain who discuss it in order to camouflage their abuse of the weak and poor. Growing up in this kind of dual polarized political and social environment made me always interested in changing and influencing humans.

In our germ-infected environment I was interested in vaccinating ourselves as humans, from doing the evil things that my family and millions of people, not only Jews, experienced in World War II. When I found Yeshua, not Christianity, the Yeshua of the New Testament, the Jewish Messiah, the one who is teaching the world that it can be a better place than Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen, at the age of 16, while reading the Gospels and the book of Acts, I understood that the only true chance for a better brand of humanity is not to fight evil with more evil, but to fight evil with good.

Nevertheless, now at the age of 75, after 59 years of worldwide ministry, I understand that even the Gospel is not an instant solution. I now understand that even with Yeshua the son of God, as my Rabbi, Teacher, Savior, and Messiah, the solution is not instant.

I understand that in order to raise an army of men and women who are dedicated to following this messiah, Yeshua, and to practicing His teachings and His example for both Jew and Gentile, it will take a different type of mechanism.

The mechanism of Christianity which we have seen operating, during the last 1500 years, has not produced a loving and peaceful community, in any place in the world. To generalize in this case is legitimate because the general history and examples that I have seen do not fit or reflect the person or the teaching or the requirements of Yeshua and His disciples as presented in the scriptures.

For this reason I urge and encourage brothers and sisters in Israel and around the world to forget the divisions and enmity that is the daily bread and butter of the Christian denominations. I urge the disciples of Yeshua to learn and to study the New Testament and to try to understand who Yeshua and His disciples are today, and to return to making Yeshua not only our savior and not only the son of God and not an object of only platitudes of worship, but our life teacher, our coach, who will ultimately become our judge.

He will be a tough judge that will judge all flesh with a sword in His hand and God’s grace will not help those who have divided and politicized and used the kingdom of God to teach enmity and hate and racism in order to achieve personal gain! The days of God’s grace are now!

We must make use of God’s grace now to correct and fix our lives and to direct others to not only go to the nice air-conditioned church buildings, but to spread the Good News, and the message of salvation, and God’s love to our neighbors in the here and now, with those who are around us!

The Torah reading of this week is from Leviticus 9:1 – 11:47, the name of this portion is Shemini. From the prophets the reading is from 2 Samuel 6:1 – 7:17. From the New Testament we read Matthew 3:11-17. This week I would like to take the words of John the Baptizer that describe John’s view of who the Messiah is and what His mission will likely be during His life here on Earth.

“‘I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him.” – Matthew 3:11–13 [NKJV]

The first phrase that needs clarification here is a hebraism, it is an Hebrew idiom: “Baptized by fire!” The basic meaning of this idiom is: The first encounter and dealing with the enemy. John the Baptist is saying here about the Messiah is that He will give us the initial first introduction to the Holy Spirit and the first introduction to the battle, the confrontation with the enemy.

The rest of John’s statement is also of great importance for our understanding:

“His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” – Matthew 3:12 [NKJV]

What does it mean “His winnowing fan is in his hand?” What is winnowing? Winnowing is the process of throwing the grain that was winnowed up in the air with a wooden fan with four wide prongs made from wood that is used to cast the winnowed grain up in the air against the wind to separate the grain from the chaff. The winnowing process is placing the harvested grain on the floor of the threshing floor, a flat big rock space on top of an exposed high hill or mountain.

When the farmer uses the winnowing fork (fan) he lifts the grain that was crushed on the threshing floor and throws it against the wind. The good grain falls to the ground because it is heavier and the chaff flies in the wind. The threshing and the winnowing is a difficult work, but the wheat is the part that suffers the most, it is a painful separation process between the chaff and the grain.

This is the description that John the Baptizer gives of the mission of the Messiah! Yeshua of course seconds John’s initiating introduction.

“So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just…” – Matthew 13:49 [NKJV]

John the Baptizer sees the Messiah, sees Yeshua, as also being the Lamb of God that came to take away the sins of the world. The image of the Lamb of God is taken from the Passover story:

“Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.’” – Exodus 12:3-6 [NKJV]

You will notice that there is a grammatical and logical dissonance in this text. Each family had to have their own sheep or goat and slaughter it on the evening of the 14th day of Nissan on their doorstep. However in verse 6 the text seems to imply that the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill “it” at twilight.

Rashi, who lived in Germany in the 12th Century, who is considered as being one of the finest commentators of the Hebrew Bible, commented about this and noticed the grammatical problem and alluded to the fact that it is impossible for the whole community of Israel to kill one lamb and there must be more to this text then meets the eye.

He from there takes his readers to Isaiah 53:7:

“He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth.” – Isaiah 53:7 [NKJV]

Rashi noted that the motif of the Lamb that saves is also found in Isaiah 53 and he connects the two places not saying it directly, but by implication that this lamb that is collectively slaughtered on the eve of Passover is related to that Lamb that is a messianic Lamb from Isaiah 53:7.

I believe that this is the meaning of John the Baptizer’s statement upon seeing Yeshua coming down to the Jordan to be baptized by him:

“Behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world.” – John 1:29 [NKJV]

The emphasis of John’s statement is one of division and separation between the “sheep and the goats,” between those whose righteousness is purchased by the Messiah’s suffering (Isaiah 53) and those who believe that they are righteous from their own deeds and charities.

Our challenge for these days is to return to basics, to be less attentive to our own gain and even to our own private salvation and more to the mission of all of Israel that was accomplished by Yeshua our Savior – to be a light to the world (see Isaiah 42:6 and God’s promises to our father Abraham). It is wonderful to remember and celebrate the grace of God that comes from Yeshua and His sacrifice for our salvation and forgiveness of sins.

We ought to celebrate and rejoice in Yeshua our Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7,8) but we must not forget that He, the man Yeshua, will judge all flesh and will condemn some and save others.

“Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.” – Acts 17:30,31 [NKJV]

I personally believe that the judgement of all flesh by Yeshua (The Jew who will judge the world in righteousness) is not far from us, and that this pandemic called “corona” is just a reminder that the whole world is in God’s hand. At His will He can save and at His will He can damn.

This is what I want you to remember on this Holocaust Memorial Day! Fearing God is as important as or even more important than many of the teachings and concepts that are very important in the Scriptures. “Fearing God” means to have the faith and trust and respect for God and be motivated to do right and to keep our relationship with Him between these two poles: loving, and fearing, God. (Respecting Him enough that your desire is to obey and please Him!)

The disciples of Christ (the Messiah) must not be passive or despondent with regard to what is happening around them. They must not be silent in the face of the challenges and evils in their community. They must not be oblivious to all of the suffering, injustice and abuse that is happening around them.

The disciples of the Messiah must be a light shining in the darkness of our world, on the immorality, and the abominable things that are happening all around us. Both the church and the synagogue have stopped up their mouths with water and are keeping silent in fear of the culture of political correctness, choosing to fear men rather than to fear God.

Political correctness has never been in tune with God’s Word or God’s will! It is always running on the the wide path that is downhill taking those who walk on that path down to destruction, to Hell! It is more important to please the Lord and be biblically correct than to be politically correct. I will end with the words of Jeremiah the prophet:

“Thus says the Lord: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited.’ ‘Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.’” – Jeremiah 17:5-8 [NKJV]

Just remember this, if there had been more Christians in Europe in the 1930s and 1940s, there would have been no Nazi Holocaust There would have been no invasion of Poland, no Nazi extermination camps, no millions of men, women and children, Jews, Gypsies, and other nationalities sent to gas chambers and burned in crematoriums.

It was Christians who carried out this horror called The Holocaust. It was not Muslims, Buddhists, or Jews who degraded and murdered people by the hundreds of thousands just because they were Jews or Gypsies. It was protestant christians, it was catholic christians who went to church and sang, “a mighty fortress is our God…”

On this day of remembrance I am happy to have the chance to remind myself and remind you too that our faith in Yeshua (in Christ) is not only for getting dressed up in our nice clothes, and going to a nice church building and singing praises. Our faith places moral, ethical and business constraints on our total life, family, work, society and our civic obligations.

I am praying and believing in the Lord’s grace for healing Marcia and restoring her ability to function and travel with me and to be a blessing to the local congregation and community and to our brothers and friends around the world. Pray also for me. In the last few days I have been feeling weak and cold, and suffer from pain in my left leg and also my back sides. I suppose and hope that these are just an old man’s normal pains and aches. The Lord can heal and strengthen and give energy.

I am scheduled for eye surgery on May 2nd. The surgery will be on my left eye. My left eye has been blind since 1951, and now the top doctors in Jerusalem are anxious to do surgery on that eye and hope that I will be able to see from both eyes. For me this is no less than a miracle, but I need your prayers. Marcia will also have cataract surgery on one of her eyes sometimes after me in the month of May.

Please Pray for Yudah Chamero who took a flight to Columbia to see his father who is in his 80th, and has been diagnosed with stage four liver cancer. The doctors in Columbia urged Yudah to come and see his father. Please pray for Yudah’s father and pray for a miracle of healing!

Please keep praying for the family of Adam R. who is the person who does the media work in Netivyah, recording, editing our writings and videos. Dear brother Adam R.

Please prayer for a dear brother, Malcolm Thomas King from the UK. Malcolm has already been in the hospital for a week and is in critical condition.

Please consider helping Netivyah to continue caring and feeding the poor of Jerusalem and blessing the people of this city that need help to feed their children and families.

Also we need your prayers and help to continue to do the Lord's work with the youth in Jerusalem, and with the publication of the “Teaching from Zion” Magazine that goes around the world in about 4000 issues and gives people a different perspective of the life and practices of the Bible and the Early Church in Israel.

Printing the Teaching from Zion Magazine requires finances for several thousands of issues and mailing costs for each issue is several thousands of dollars. We are not charging money for every service and teaching that we do around the world. We have our M.O. from the very beginning of Netivyah in the year 1980, we want to share the Lord’s goodness free of charge. We are teaching around the world, and now we are doing it through modern technology and feeding spiritual truths and teachings. Just a few hours ago, I gave a teaching of nearly three hours to leaders from Italy. All our teachings both at home and around the world are carried out free-of-charge for those who receive them, but at high cost to Netivyah for the production and printing of these valuable teachings.

The Hamotzi program for feeding the needy of Jerusalem is ongoing and has not stopped during most of the coronavirus lockdown and quarantine. The number of needy people who come to receive food from our program has increased and overall need has increased.

Please pray for Netivyah and for the Netivyah leadership and find ways to partner and participate in the great blessing that the ministry of Netivyah is here in Israel and also around the world. Please pray and seek ways to partner and contribute financially for the Lord’s work in Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Please continue to pray for a very special kindergarten in Jerusalem “Little Hearts.” The director of this special kindergarten is one of our own from the congregation.

Keep praying for a dear sister, Livia Schnell Nothen. Please keep brother Philip Marc in your prayers. Pray for Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias. He is the father of a dear sister in Brazil.

Pray for all those wonderful, dedicated brothers and sisters in Korea who stood with Israel and with Netivyah to revive and to not forget their first love for Israel and for Netivyah.

Danah our daughter, needs much prayer for her health and her situation. Our granddaughter Noam is a senior in high-school and working with Zoom to finish her high school. Pray for the Lord to give Noam guidance and direction for graduation from high school.

Our grandson Joseph also needs prayer to be able to get into college with proper scholarships. Please lift Barry our son and his family, Beth, and Joey our grandson to be protected and spared any contact and infection of the coronavirus. Marcia’s mother June is 91 years old and her health is failing.

Our dear sister Hadassah continues her healing and recovery from cancer. Keep her in your prayers.

I am adding a new prayer request from a leader of God’s people in India, Joy Mathew. Joy has a serious heart condition and has asked for prayer.

From Chennai, India, please remember Pastor Isaac. Pastor Isaac is an older man with severe kidney problems and has to have dialysis several times per week. Remember Tony and Louisa Tam, and our brothers and sisters at the 611 Church, and the other churches who love God and love Israel in that great city. Remember in your prayers the Cohen family in Hong Kong.

Just a word of grace before the mercy seat of the Almighty will be heard in favor of these brothers and Um Mahmud Abu-Eid and Jimmy Abu-Eid and his family, Keijo and Salme our dear brothers in Finland, Tim Tucker, Satu-Maria, Sinni Tuuli, Anne Mirjami our dear sister and all our other brothers and sisters in Finland who need our prayers, Eva H., Patty, Andrea, Julia and Victor, and Aaron Tani, and Hillel and his wife.

We continue to pray for Zhou Wenrian, Abe family, Toru San, Takeo Sensei, Daisuke Sensei, Tomoko San, Yumi and her father Pastor Ohara, George, and Pastor Isaac in Chennai, India.

I have just received a prayer request from a dear sister from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her father who is 70 years old and diabetic has contracted the COVID-19 virus. His name is Paulo C. Pereira Braga Dias.

Please see your prayer as casting a vote for healing before the Lord and His angels in Heaven in favor of every brother and sister that you are praying for. Just a word of grace for all of us is a refreshing spirit. Take your prayers before the mercy seat of the Almighty to be heard in favor of those that you are lifting in prayer.

We have brothers and sisters in Israel and in China and I ask you to pray for their safety and protection: Deborah Ruth, Lydia, Sima, Laurel S., Naomi, Orna, David S., Daniel, Dalia D., Ayla, Hillel, Elhanan, Tony, Dr. Song, and his wife Sister Harriet Kim, Michael Knezevich, Ismael Alves, Asher Gabriel, M. Ahuva. Please pray for a dear brother who is well into his 90’s and lost his wife a couple of weeks ago. His name is Dov H. Please keep in your prayers a dear sister who attends our congregation in Jerusalem. Her name is Hadassah and she just had cancer surgery. Pray for Hadassah for a full recovery and remission from any cancer in her body.

Pray for Israel. We are going through terrible riots and violence in the streets of Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv and other places around the country. These riots are motivated by the fact that much of the populace of Israel does not understand what the government is doing in relationship to the coronavirus pandemic.

I would like a new prayer request for a dear brother Yehuda Hochman who lives in the Negev Desert. Yehuda has to receive Dialysis treatment several times per week.

I pray that the Lord will inspire and motivate brothers and sisters and ministries who can help with this to visit our webpage and do what they can to make it possible for us to double or more than double, the number of people and families that we serve.

From our congregation in Jerusalem, we ask you to join us in prayer for the following dear brothers and sisters: Gary, Melanie, Sarit, Gabriela, Ahuva, Leah, Ilana, Hannah, young Gabriela, Jonathan B. and his wife Aviva and their new baby.

Pray for some dear friends, Rabbi Salt, and his family and Rabbi Hasselblad. They are both older and need protection and blessings.

The coronavirus is threatening the economy of the world with a great recession and depression. Some of our major supporters have already lowered the amount of their support. They have done this not only toward Netivyah, but for all the ministries that they are supporting, and they are many. I would like to first ask you to pray about your part in supporting Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry.

Second, I would like for you who stand with us in prayer and financially to do your absolute best to stay on board with us and communicate. We realize that times will be hard for several years, but we also realize that God has chosen and blessed you for such a time as this.

Third, please pray for a new project that we are starting in Israel in partnership with the Houses for Healing ministry from Abilene, Texas.
 

I wish all of you, who stand with Israel and who pray for Jerusalem, the best of the Lord’s blessings and the fulfillment of all His promises to His faithful children. Those who hear God and do His will are the ones who are called wise! Those who only hear His word and don’t do it are called foolish! Let us all strive to be wise and never foolish! The best is yet to come!
