에이탄쉬시코프 목사님의 부림절 이야기(2008.3.20)
오늘 밤 이스라엘에서는 부림절 축제가 시작된다. 그 기원과 배경은 고대 페르시아의 색채가 드리워진 에스더서에 기록되어 있다.
에스더는 죽음을 무릅쓰고 자기 백성 유대 민족을 구해낸 용감한 여왕으로서 아카데미상 시상식에 들어온다. 그녀가 “성경적인 스타”라는 지위를 얻었을 때, 개막전을 알리는데 없어서는 안되는 “조연 배우"가 있는데 그의 이름은 모르드개 이다.
모르드개 - 내가 좋아하는 사람 모르드개는 내가 좋아하는 부림절 인물이다. 유대 민족 멸절 위협에 대한 그의 행동은 오늘 날 우리에게도 모델이 된다. 여러분은 오늘 날 이스라엘이 또 다시 페르시아(이란)의 우두머리에 의해 위협받고 있는 현실의 아이러니를 이해할 수 있겠는가? 이 하만이 바로 이란 대통령 ‘아흐마디네자드’이다. 다른 비유들 또한 많이 있다.
에스더서의 상황 이해 · 모르드개는 도덕적으로 어두운 지역에서 살았다. (아하수에로왕의 방탕한 연회가 이것을 반영한다)
· 고위급 정부 지도자들은 악과 타협하고 있었다. (왕은 하만의 사악한 계획에 대해 무지한듯 보였다)
· 대(大)테러리스트 하만은 유대 민족에 대해 세상이 부정적인 편견을 갖도록 선동하였다.
· 정부 내부에서 유일하게 하나님을 믿는 자였던 에스더의 영향력은 미약했으며, 그녀가 유대인이라는 사실은 감추어져 있었다.
이 무대 위에 모르드개가 등장한다. 그는 하나님의 극적인 개입을 이끌어 내는 세가지 특징을 보여 준다.
1. 성실성 : 모르드개는 그의 어린 조카를 입양하여 양육하였고, 유대민족을 향한 암살 시도를 적발해 냈으며, 자아도취에 빠진 하만 앞에서 고개 숙여 인사하기를 거절함으로 그의 권위에 복종하지 않았다.
2. 정체성: 모르드개는 공개적으로 자신이 유대인이라는 사실을 밝히는데 주저하지 않았고 도망가기 위해 에스더와의 관계를 이용하지도 않았다
3. 중보 : 모르드개는 유대민족을 멸하려는 계획이 알려졌을 때, 하나님의 자비를 위해 통곡하며 부르짖었고 금식하며 하나님의 은혜를 구했다.
나의 영웅 모르드개는 자기 자신의 안위를 희생하고 대신 하나님이 당신의 백성인 이스라엘과 함께 하신 언약에 가치를 두었다. 그는 또한 그의 가족이 수양딸인 에스더를 평생 돌보아 주기로 한 약속에도 가치를 두었다. 수년간에 걸친 에스더를 위한 애정 어린 보살핌은 그에게 권좌를 향한 잠재적인 접근을 가져오게 했다.
오스카상 만큼의 가치가 있는 종결 그런데, 오스카상의 최고 각본상의 가치가 있는 반전으로, 그 악당 하만은 모르드개를 달아 죽이려고 했던 바로 그 교수대에 매달리게 된다. 그리고 모르드개는 인도에서부터 에디오피아까지 이르는 페르시아 제국에서 왕 다음의 권위와 특권을 갖게 된다.
자, 여기서 우리는, 하만의 교수대와 예슈아가 돌아가신 로마 십자가의 놀랄만한 유사성을 인정하지 않고는 이 이야기를 결론지을 수 없음을 깨닫게 된다. 둘 다 나무로 만들어져 거꾸로 세워지고 땅으로부터 들려졌다. 둘 다 잔인한 것이고 치욕적인 죽음의 공적인 도구였다. 각각의 경우 구원을 방해하는 적의 계획이 예상과는 반대의 결과로 끝이 났다. 모르드개 대신 하만이 달려 죽은 교수대는 유대민족을 미래에 성취될 세계 구원의 메신저로 공표한 것이다. 십자가에 매달린 예슈아의 경우, 메시아의 구속의 역할을 훼방하려는 사단의 계획은 전능하신 하나님의 반직관적인 전략 안에서 놀이감이 되었다: 즉 그 분의 아들을 희생함으로써 세상을 구원하시려는 하나님의 반전이 있으셨던 것이다.
이제, 이 놀랄만한 드라마에서 우리는 각자에게 주어지는 역할에 충실하기를 바란다. 제사장적 중보자인 여러분의 역할에 저는 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 우러나오는 감사를 드린다. 기도 안에서의 우리의 연결은 미신적인 것이 아니다. 우리는 살아계신 하나님의 시은좌 앞에 나란히 무릎 꿇은 서로를 발견하게 된다. 그 곳에서 그 분의 자비의 풍성하심과 평안과 임재하심이 끊어지지 않는 것을 발견하기를 기도한다. 이스라엘의 완전한 구속을 위하여 우리와 함께 중보하는 여러분에게 축복이 임하길 바라며.....

Vitally needed intercessors, Shalom!
Tonight the festival of Purim began. Its origin and background are drawn in the colors of ancient Persia, recorded in the Book of Esther.
Esther turns in an Academy Award winning performance as the courageous queen who saves her people by risking death. While earning "biblical star" status in her role, there is a "supporting actor" without whom the production would never have reached opening night. I am referring, of course, to Mordechai.
MORDECHAI - MY FAVORITE
Mordechai is my favorite Purim character. His response to the threat of Jewish destruction serves as a model for us today. Can we grasp the irony of the fact that Israel's existence is again begin threatened by a Persian (Iranian) head of state? This Haman is named Ahmadinejad. There are other parallels too numerous to ignore.
· Mordechai lived in an era of moral darkness (Ahasuerus' debauched banquet reflects this)
· Top government leadership was in compromise with evil (the same king seemed blinded to Haman's wicked scheme).
· An arch-terrorist incited world opinion against the Jewish people.
· Esther, the one believer inside the government, had only modest influence and was not yet known as a Jewish believer (I'm using some liberty to translate into our terms.).
Onto this stage walks Mordechai. He demonstrates three traits that lead to God's dramatic intervention.
1. INTEGRITY. Mordechai adopted and raised his younger cousin, exposed an assassination plot and refused to bow in obeisance before the ego-maniacal Haman.
2. IDENTIFICATION. Mordechai did not hesitate to openly identify himself as a Jew, nor did he use his connection with Esther to escape.
3. INTERCESSION. Mordechai shattered the silence with his cries for God's mercy, fasting and humbling himself was Jewish destruction was announced.
In each case, my hero gave up something: his discretionary time, his privacy, his personal advancement, his comfort. He valued God's covenant with His people Israel, at the cost of his own safety. He also greatly valued his family covenant with Esther, the foster daughter to whom he had devoted lifetime care. The years of loving investment in her destiny now gave him potential access to the throne.
OSCAR-WORTHY ENDING
Then, in a surprise ending worthy of an Oscar for Best Screenplay, the villain is hanged on the gallows intended for Mordechai; and Mordechai is made second only to the king in authority and privilege in the Persian Empire, which stretched from India to Ethiopia. Talk about vindication! Here we cannot conclude without acknowledging the striking similarity of the Haman's gallows with the Roman cross upon which Yeshua was executed. Both were wooden scaffoldings standing upright, lifted up from the earth. Both were cruel, public instruments of humiliating death. In each case the enemy's plan to block redemption backfired. Upon the gallows Haman was executed instead of Mordechai, releasing the Jewish people to future fulfillment as the messengers of world salvation. In Yeshua's case, Satan's plan to thwart the Messiah's redeeming role played into the c! ounter-intuitive strategy of Almighty God: to save the world by sacrificing His son.
Now, each of us has a continuing role in this incredible drama. For your role as priestly intercessors, I thank you from my heart. Our linkage in prayer is not a superficial one. We find ourselves kneeling side by side at the Mercy Seat of the Living God. May you find there a never-ending abundance of His grace, peace and strength. Be blessed as you intercede with us for Israel's full redemption.
